Brian Drummond | Thursday, 08.10.2023
Did you know that Brian Drummond previously voiced Knuckles in Sonic Underground (1999) before he voiced both Dr. Eggman & Mr. Dr. Eggman in Sonic Prime (2022-24)?

Here’s a little winter-themed Stobotnik drawing that's also an illustration inspired by @emperorharuhis fanfiction "A Doctor For Christmas: The (Not A) Hallmark Movie"
This fic is absolute pure softness (and surprisingly a lot of US-bashing, so sorry Americans I guess lol) You will love it!

We have our first clip from Sonic Prime! It's extremely short and doesn't get into the multiverse shenanigans that will be the focus of the show, but two key takeaways:
It looks just like the games! The reports that this would very much be Sega's Sonic are definitely ringing true. I can't believe it's taken us this long and this many iterations to get a Sonic cartoon that just looks like the games, but it happened
Sonic has been recast for the show, now played by Deven Mack (who posted a vlog-style video to coincide with the announcement). I definitely like what I hear in this very short clip, although it does kinda sound like he's just doing an impersonation of Roger. But maybe that will be less of an issue when we get to hear him for more than five seconds at a time. Also it's a Canadian cartoon, so they just got a Canadian cartoon cast. It happens. Canadian production standards are weird
Speaking of casting, we have a list of more voice actors who are on this! We don't know who's playing who, but it's probably not hard to guess for some of them. And surprise! Almost all of them were in My Little Pony. Ashleigh Ball (voice of Rainbow Dash and Applejack) is first on the list, which could possibly mean she's Tails. I think she'd do a good Tails. Next up is Shannon Chan-Kent (Pinkie Pie's singing voice, or like five different characters on Littlest Pet Shop 2012 if you're a real one) who I could very, very easily see playing an excellent Amy. Then we've got Brian Drummond, who if I have to guess I'd say might be Knuckles, but maybe he's Eggman? Or someone else entirely? Who knows! Also joining them are Vincent Tong, Ian Hanlin, Kazumi Evans, and Adam Narada, and I won't even try to guess who they're playing in a show we know almost nothing about
(I'm not gonna get my hopes up for any IDW characters to be in this, but if they've already got Ashleigh Ball there... she's already pretty much my headcanon voice for Tangle. So uh. Hey. WildBrain? Think about it, maybe?)
And, finally, it looks like the showrunner on Sonic Prime is Erik Wiese, who's worked on a lot of Nickelodeon productions over the years (including storyboarding on many of the most iconic episodes of SpongeBob) but is probably most notable for being co-creator of The Mighty B. Neat! He also boarded on Danny Phantom and Samurai Jack, for those worried about his action credentials
So yeah! Still no date for this show beyond "2022," but it seems to be shaping up pretty nicely, based on this tiny bit of info we have here

[Hefty sigh]
How does one get into sonic prime, I mean I adore where they're going for the story but I'm still struggling to get through s1 because the voice are just not clicking with me. Don't get me wrong here props to the Canadian VA's and the crew as a whole but the fact that I don't really vibe well with the chaos council as a concept [since they aren't really as menacing as the actual egg but I get what they're going for..... kinda.... ] This is like the one sonic media I can't personally click into, and I honest to God adored Underground/Boom so it's probably just a me-squick....
I have literally been a sonic fan since birth reading the comics so it's just tonal whiplash trying to get used to it- I'm lost in my own confusion that they already produced 3 seasons @_@;;; I just feel like I'm alone in feeling this or something idk I'm just merely screaming into the sonic-fandom wondering if anyone else felt this way hsbshbsshv ////
I'm just as clueless as you on that unfortunately lol. Respectfully I'm not a fan personally, I think the ideas had potential to be interesting if done right but I just don't find the execution appealing. I hate to say it and don't wanna be overly negative but I was honestly bored watching the first eight episodes, they were hard to get through and it was a bit of a letdown for me.
It feels underwhelming and repetitive because practically the same cycle of events happens each episode and it's not very interesting at that. I haven't watched any episodes past those, I watched nothing but the Eggman prismatic titan thing in the last batch and don't plan on watching the rest. I just decided it wasn't for me, not what I'm looking for in a Sonic show.
I'm sad I didn't end up liking it after being interested in where they could take it, especially with how much potential I feel New Yoke City had because it was conceptually right up my alley but execution is just not to my tastes and I've accepted it. I shouldn't be surprised as I'm not into most of the non game media ^^; I was just hoping for a modern show like X again
If they had more regular Eggman they could've changed my opinion a lot not gonna lie because the small 5 mins of him was great. Characterization was good, he was funny, his model and animation were gorgeous, voice was okayyy just needed some improvements, and I was interested in what he would've done with the prism had Sonic not shattered it and erased him from existence. When he practically died my interest went along with it sorry dhfjsbfksbfks
The Chaos Council just don't interest me personally because each are missing all the parts of Eggman combined that make him his lovable whole to me. And when you just want the real deal to still have his place like he seemed he was going to initially in the concept art, only for him to not be there at all, it's hard to get into it when you're thinking about what could've been. Also yeah they're just not menacing and don't bring the same exciting world shattering chaos and action the real deal does
And oh no they're really still only on the first season, eight episodes isn't a season. Netflix is just being weird about how they have it realized in batches and how it separates them but no way is eight episodes a whole season. They only had the first season made and released with huge gaps but maybe they'll order for a second one to be made.
But yeah you're not alone. It's very popular and I'm glad people can enjoy it but yeah it didn't click with me either and I can relate on feeling like the odd one out. But that makes two of us! and I do know others who just don't like it either and I don't think we should feel a pressure to try to get into it, if we don't like it and it's just not for us then it's fine

Just remembering everyone that Iizuka confrirmed a while back that Sonic in Sonic Prime is Game Sonic.
It’s very likely that SEGA requested to Deven Mack to do a Roger Craig Smith impersonation.
It’s also confirmed that Mike Pollock won’t be in Sonic Prime, Dr. Eggman will also be voiced by a Canadian sound-a-like.

Even though we’ve only hard a laugh and a growl out of him, I already like the sound of Dr Eggman’s voice in Prime. Since its a Canadian production, they won’t be able to use Mike Pollock will they?

First we got Sonic Prime concept leaks and now the CAST IS LEAKED??? BECAUSE OF IMDB????
Let takes this all with a grain salt as we indulge on this adventure of a cast list
Lemme look at this...
Hmm...
Tumblr media
Okay Sonic, Eggman and Blaze seem to be our main characters, expected that for Sonic and Eggman, not Blaze but that’s interesting. Don’t recognize their actors tho.
Tumblr media
Tails, Knuckles and Amy our secondary cast, that’s cool, still don’t recognize their actors.
Tumblr media
Oh cool the well known Canadian VA Scott McCord and Jaleel White-
WAIT HOLD UP
WHAT
LIKE THE??? SCOTT MCCORD???
AS IN THE SCOTT MCCORD WHO VOICED???? THESE GUYS???
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HIM????? AS SHADOW?????
IM—
I DONT HAVE WORDS IF THIS IS TRUE.
I made a joke to my sister not too long ago and it was like “Sonic Prime is being made in a Canadian Studio, wouldn’t it be funny if it had some Total Drama VA’s?” AND NOW APPARENTLY THATS TRUE AND I CANT DO THIS RIGHT NOW
AND NOT ONLY THAT
BUT JALEEL???? JALEEL FLIPPING WHITE???? COMING BACK??? FOR CLASSIC SONIC???
IM DOWN, OMG AM I DOWN FOR THAT. LET HIM BE HIS BOY AGAIN, THATS A GREAT WAIT TO CELEBRATE 30 YEARS TOO, HONORING SONICS FIRST CARTOON VA.
AS EXCITED AS I AM
Remember take this with a grain of salt, as it may be false and it is currently unconfirmed, so if this turns out to not be the case, we’ll deal with that then.
I also wanna mention that we did get confirmation about Roger, Colleen and Mike not providing the voices of their characters in Prime and that they’re staying strictly for games, hence why it’s an all new cast. Just wanted to remind ppl who forgot.
But for now, please excuse me as I scream into my pillow.

New Sonic game idea:
You go to canada. Tails has gone missing, and Sonic assumes the worst. After beating up several botniks and confronting eggman, he finds out that eggman did not in fact take tails. He searches the Canadian mountainside, the wilderness as it were. When he finally does find Tails, he is shocked beyond belief.
Tails left to go join the Canadian mounted Police. Markiplier is there. End credits.

Sonic’s villain never needed a sidekick. Dr. “Eggman” Robotnik had robots, but it was always a solo gig.
Turns out, Robotnik needed Stone, Lebanese actor Lee Majdoub’s assistant character in the new “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie, more than any of us realized — and so do we. So much so, movie fans are now hoping that this new, hopelessly earnest and thirsty new character shows up in a sequel.
Majdoub’s character was initially supposed to be an exposition tool, “to give someone for Robotnik to talk to,” Majdoub told The Washington Post in a phone interview. But as Jim Carrey, who plays Robotnik, improvised, developing his villain into a lonely, Ivy League-educated misanthropic mad doctor, Madjoub in turn made Stone into something of a doting pupil, desperate for attention from his mentor.
“Through chatting with Jim and developing a rapport with him, we turned their relationship into something more fun and personal,” said Majdoub. “Even Jim said at one point that there’s got to be something about Stone. If Robotnik hates humanity so much, why is it this one guy that sticks around? Stone was always reliable, always there for him, and knew what he was going to do before he did it."
The central theme of “Sonic the Hedgehog” is how men deal with loneliness. Sonic wanted friends, and had none. Robotnik wanted no friends, but had Agent Stone. Their relationship bordered on abusive (by way of slapstick physical comedy).
Now, Agent Stone is developing his own audience of admirers, inspiring fan art which reimagines him as a classic Sonic villain, and notably, art that “ships” a loving relationship between the two villains.
“It’s definitely admiration,” said Majdoub, laughing, recalling the art. “I think more than anything, Stone just wants attention from Robotnik, and wants to mean something to him. There are elements of their relationship he’ll go through that typically someone won’t go through just to get that. He probably sees, ‘Wow this guy stresses out a lot. Maybe I can make him a latte to ease him up and it’ll all be okay.'”
Majdoub’s character was just another surprise in a film full of them. The film was mocked mercilessly last year for a disastrous first impression of the Sonic design. Yet against all odds (and lots of extra work), “Sonic the Hedgehog” is now Hollywood’s No. 1 film of the moment, and it’s likely to stay that way for another weekend. The Washington Post’s Style review called it “sweet, funny and smart."
Diversity in Hollywood has been a big part of the discourse surrounding filmmaking these days, and “Sonic the Hedgehog” has a diverse cast without ever calling attention to it. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter portray an interracial marriage that simply exists, which the script doesn’t call any attention to, even with its jokes. Majdoub, a Lebanon-born Canadian citizen, called it refreshing.
“I love it, when a production or project doesn’t feel like we have to be like, ‘Hey look at us, we casted diversity, yay us,’” Majdoub said. “It just was. It’s a family movie that just has representation. And the fact that we don’t have to hit you over the head with it is refreshing.”
Majdoub said he’s lucky to be with an agent that avoided stereotypical roles for Middle Eastern men. For him, it was about the long game, and not being typecast.
“I have friends who have that struggle, having made decisions and feeling they can’t get out of it,” Majdoub said. “I think as an industry, we’re going in the right direction. Could it be better? Of course. Could we be moving faster? Yes. I’ve just been really fortunate."
Majdoub felt genuinely moved by how positive everyone on the project was, even despite the shock and controversy caused by the first trailer, which caused such an outcry that director Jeff Fowler and Paramount Pictures delayed release of the film to completely rework the main character’s design.
“It was more a shock to see how many people were speaking out, and how much engagement there was,” said Majdoub, who grew up with the character but didn’t realize the franchise had a rabid online fan base. “It was realizing how important of a character this was to people. So many people wanted their voices heard, and to see Jeff and that team not miss a beat, to come out and listen, was amazing. It’s a big struggle these days, wanting to be heard, and it’s lovely to see what happens when it’s done right."

not prepared to hear eggman be voiced by someone other than mike pollock in sonic prime. like the voice actors for other characters have been replaced so many times that im used to them sounding different but mike pollock has survived two big waves of game voice actors being replaced and has been eggman for almost as long as ive been alive and his voice is so iconic no one else can be eggman to me. idk what im gonna do if he ever gets replaced in the games lmao

I like how bouncy and fluid Eggman's movement is in Prime, but the voice still throws me. It sounds like someone trying to do an Eggman impression (which seems to be exactly what Brian Drummond did - try and make his voice sound like Mike's). I almost wish they'd had him do his own take on Eggman's voice because Drummond as a voice actor is really good at villain voices. I'll reserve more judgment until we get full episodes, but at the moment his voice is just "off" enough to bug me.
Me too, I absolutely love how he's animated, he's so bouncy and lively and full of the Eggman energy I love in every movement. It's also got me giggling over how handsome he is as usual so they did it right fjsbshgksbgk 🥰💜💕💘
But yeah I really don't feel the same is happening with the voice. I'm not trying to be negative so I realize I haven't actually shared my thoughts on it at all, aside from obviously being sad about how Mike has been replaced as Eggman in an English role in general for the second time (movie first which I was already sad about) and now in animated content for the first time... He's been the voice of Eggman the entire time I've been a fan, except I heard Deem Bristow first and enjoy them equally. They'll always be my two favorites and I know that no others will ever come close for me.
I really wish that they could've just gotten Mike for this. Especially because he's been an exception to the rule before as a non Canadian actor involved with another project and that definitely should've happened again here for such a major long time important role of his. I miss when you knew that with any kind English content, you could expect Mike's voice to leave Eggman's mouth but now that isn't even the case with animated content, it feels so wrong. I never wanted them to switch Mike out for any other English actor at all under any circumstances for as long as he was willing and able to play the role. :')
Mike's Eggman voice is the definitive for him now for almost 20 years of him being the voice of him in English. They brought him back despite the recasting and kept him the longest in English out of any of the English actors for a reason- because he brought so much life and energy to the character just through voice and it's so unique and powerful that nobody could come close to capturing it as well after him. Anyway oops sorry I'm rambling but I still can't get over this I'm just really sad about it and it just feels like a sin to replace him for anything in general to me lol
No hate to Brian or course, I'm sure he does have great voice talent even though I haven't really heard him. But yeah it kind of does sound like that and it's not really working for him. Mike was initially hired to be a Deem sound alike but I feel Deem's is easier to match than Mike's take, as in the first three X episodes he sounded pretty good and close, until the fourth where he decided to start doing his own take. While I still like the former, it was a big improvement when he started doing his own thing that he said was more doable and it worked just as great for the character.
But Brian sounding like he's kind of attempting an impression of Mike makes it sound rather flat in comparison, which I was expecting anyway because damn is Mike's hard to replicate with the gruffness and gravel and highs and lows of his tone at the same time. That's what makes it so great and unique, it adds a lot of life and energy to the character as much as lively exaggerated movement, which makes it the best to me. Even the way Mike performs growls and laughter sounds a lot stronger and emphasized with that energy to suit how theatrical of a villain he is.
But it's especially not helping that Brian's sounds like an attempted impression for those reasons, it probably would be better if it sounded more like he was doing his own slightly different take. I'm trying not to sound negative, I don't hate it and I will give it a chance and maybe he can improve or his performance will actually be pretty good as we hear more. But also I'm always gonna be absolutely biased when it comes to this, so I just know that Deem and Mike are always gonna be my two favorite takes equally and that no other is really gonna be close to delivering the same for me personally lol

I’m not sure if Mike Pollock would be voicing Eggman in Prime. I think they mentioned part of the reason they switched to Devon was due to some sort of mandate where the Canadian company producing Prime wants only VAs form Canada, possibly from Covid Restrictions
See, that's what I was thinking along the lines of.
