My Review of Carole and Tuesday
Tumblr media
How did I get into this anime? I’ve been wanting to watch this anime for the longest time. It’s just that when it first came out it was in ‘Netflix jail’. And not just regular Netflix jail, “Japanese Netflix jail”. After it was finally released, I found myself caught up in other ventures like Komi-san, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Violet Evergarden. I know, I sicken myself for that.
It’s important to note that in this story, people have the capability to live on Mars and the planet is now a terraformed, human-thriving place to live. We have AI technology to thank for that. Okay, now I see the connection to Shinichiro Watanabe directing this anime. I’ve been wondering for years why the genius behind Space Dandy and Cowboy Bebop would do this.
Tumblr media
We start the anime with a young girl named Tuesday running away from home with nothing but her guitar and the clothes on her back. She leaves her affluent family behind and ends up in the metropolis Alba City. There she meets a keyboard player named Carole. Carole has been on her own her whole life. During the day she’s at part-time jobs (that she usually gets fired from) and at night, she plays the keyboard. Carole and Tuesday’s meeting was fate. They both connected when they jammed together. After playing on a stage for a few minutes, someone recorded their surprise performance and uploaded it online. The video became a viral sensation and caught the attention a man named Gus who wants to be the girl’s manager.
Tumblr media
Aside from seeing the misadventures of Carole and Tuesday, we occasionally see things about a famous model named Angela. She has aspirations of hitting it big in the music industry as well and goes through all kinds of trials to be on par with all the AI generated music these days. But of course, Angela isn’t the main focus of the story, Carole and Tuesday are. They don’t even meet for real until the 8th episode. But Angela who already has name-recognition feels a little threatened by the mellow melodies of Carole and Tuesday. Let’s watch these talented ladies make some music!
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: As I said before, this was indeed nabbed by Netflix back in 2019. Sure, it’s no problem now. But count back four years and you’ve got months of pirating or waiting depending on your patience. It eventually aired and as a collective everyone moved on to the next big thing. In later years, it looked as though Sentai Filmworks licensed it as well. Is that what Sentai is going to continue doing? Are they going to take every single Netflix anime series, license it, and redub it? Legitimately asking here! They just did that to Kakegurui. If they do, for the love of God, please don’t let them redub over the songs. And thank you Netflix for not trying to butcher the songs. I always get worried when watching a musical anime that it’s going to happen. Long story short, I loved both the sub and the dub. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
JAPANESE CAST: *Tuesday is played by Kana Ichinose (known for Maki on Kaguya-sama, Maaa on Made in Abyss, and Yuzuriha on Dr. Stone)
*Carole is played by Miyuri Shimabukuro (known for Inca on Fire Force and Yuuna on Tsurune)
*Angela is played by Sumire Uesaka (known for Nagatoro on Miss Nagatoro, Shalltear on Overlord, Chloe on Miss Kobayashi, Dekomori on Chunibyo, Aya on Tonikawa, and Mitsuki on Yuri is my Job)
*Gus is played by Akio Ootsuka (known for InuYasha’s father on InuYasha, All For One on My Hero Academia, Rider on Fate/Zero, Gouhin on Beastars, Kyouraku on Bleach, Blackbeard on One Piece, and Skull Knight on Berserk 2016)
ENGLISH CAST: *Tuesday is played by Brianna Knickerbocker (known for Rem on Re:Zero, Kanao on Demon Slayer, Filo on Shield Hero, Akane on Durarara, Wiz on Konosuba, and Misha on Misfit of Demon Academy)
*Carole is played by Jeannie Tirado (known for Lutz on Ascendance of a Bookworm, Norman on The Promised Neverland, Fana on Black Clover, Kanae on Tokyo Ghoul :re, Riko on Love Live Sunshine, Zera on Fairy Tail)
*Angela is played by Ryan Bartley (known for Allister on Pokemon Journeys, Ram on Re:Zero, Takechiyo on Yashahime, Yuna on SAO, Yusa on Charlotte, Futaba on Magia Record, and Gilda on The Promised Neverland)
*Gus is played by Jason Marnocha (known for Samurai Sword on Chainsaw Man)
DISLIKED CHARACTER: Mamoru Miyano or not, I don’t like Ertegun. To be fair though, there are a lot of Mamoru Miyano characters I hate. Look, the point is I don’t like this guy.
Tumblr media
Yeah. His first couple of appearances left a nasty taste in my mouth. Even when it seems like he’s a better man with Carole and Tuesday after losing all his money, I would always be suspicious of the guy. At least with Cybelle, we never see her again after the shady shit she did. This guy, we see up until the end of the series.
Tumblr media
SHIPPING: Tuesday sure has had her fair-share of love interests. Well, she had one. But Cybelle was too much of a stalker fan. We actually see another stalker who loved a singer too much here too. But because it’s Angela, they took care of things before she was shot on stage. The Cybelle thing kinda got crazy when she gave Tuesday a hickey and set off a booby-trap that injured her. Yeesh, this woman!
Tumblr media
But then we see Tuesday seem a little interested in an investigative reporter named Kyle. She doesn’t have to say anything, her facial expressions and the redness of her face says it all. But one night, she was planning to give him a gift and sees him kissing another girl kinda shattered her.
Tumblr media
Now if there’s anyone with an interesting love life that we only see a little bit of is Gus’s. Probably because of his prior marriage to Marie…who is now marrying another woman. This show is totally rep’in the LGBT+ community and I’m lovin’ it.
Tumblr media
GUILTY PLEASURE: Yeah, I really like that Mermaid Sisters song.
Admit it to yourselves. The second you heard that song, you found yourself humming it the rest of the day.
Tumblr media
HALFWAY POINT: Before the midway point, Carole and Tuesday made it onto the hit reality-competition show Mars Brightest. If I were to explain it, it looked like an American Idol, The Voice, America’s Got Talent mish-mash. The girls made it through to the top 8 out of over 200 contestants. But they were up against some really talented singers including several influencers plus Angela who is doing her singing debut. Their non-use of A.I.’s with their music might seem like it would cripple their chances of winning the competition, but the judges and the audience have fallen in love with the duo. It wasn’t an easy ride here. Before their semi-finals match, a disgruntled Tuesday fan set up a booby-trap that burned her arm. Cybelle was all kinds of red-flags and I pray that’s the last I see of her.
Tumblr media
After the semis, Tuesday is kidnapped. Tuesday’s mother (Valerie Simmons) orchestrated this to bring her back home. Tuesday’s mother is a politician and in the middle of an election to become the leader of Mars and doesn’t need her “disobedient” child causing mayhem in the middle of a crucial campaign. Thankfully, Carole, Gus, and Roddy were able to break in and bust Tuesday out (with some help from Tuesday’s brother). Unfortunately for Carole and Tuesday, this bust-out happened on the day of the Mars Brightest finale and they had to hurry up to the studio to perform live. The good news was they made it in time. The bad news, they were disqualified for not being present during the broadcast. But they were allowed to perform despite being disqualified. Their performance was so moving that they were actually given a record contract.
Tumblr media
Gus however put an end to them getting a contract from that Mars Brightest judge Catherine. Gus has been in the business a long time and would feel it would be better for the girls if they had a little more freedom when it comes to their music. And so, they all go on a journey for an elusive producer named Tobe. They lured this secret guy out and after scaring the shit out of everyone with an axe, he agreed to help the girls produce.
Tumblr media
I know I should have put this in the sub/dub section, but I fucking love John Snyder’s voice. No one ever says anything about this guy and he plays a grizzled, old fuck better than most voice actors. But aside from that, we’ve also got Tuesday’s mother waging a war on illegal aliens in her presidential campaign, a stalker getting a little too crazy for Angela, and Ertegun being financially bankrupt.
Tumblr media
ENDING: It’s been well established at the beginning of every episode that Carole and Tuesday were going to cause a monumental moment that will cause a seven-minute “miracle”. So, it should go without saying that the girls hit it big by the end of this series. But what do we have to look forward to before then? Angela’s agent Mr. Tao being arrested. Angela’s mother having a heart attack. Carole and Tuesday working on an album. An Angela A.I. clone. Carole’s friend detained for being an illegal alien. The Mars election. The Grammy’s. All of that happening within the final couple of episodes may seem too much, but I think it all ended quite nicely.
Tumblr media
First, let’s get to the Angela stuff. Everyone still sees Angela as the golden child in the music industry and nearly everywhere else. Mr. Tao expanded that by creating an A.I. of Angela. His experiments do go really in depth and can get unethical. Added pressure from her mother Dahlia hasn’t helped her one bit as it just gave her severe stress. Angela ends up getting hooked on pain killers and other medications. But a sudden collapse from Dahlia changed everything. Angela learns from Dahlia that she isn’t really her mother but loves her regardless and then she dies. Angela was a wreck at this moment and still attends the Grammy’s to perform. She gets the Best New Artist award and performs…I think.
Tumblr media
I’m not sure if she actually performed or if it was all in her head. Angela’s psychosis almost went to Perfect Blue levels. What we are sure of is that she collapsed on stage as she overdosed on painkillers. Angela’s mental state was out of control that we don’t know if she’ll ever sing again.
Tumblr media
The Mars election has been a big thing since the halfway point. Tuesday’s mother Valerie has been climbing up in the polls with her controversial illegal immigration stances. Truth be told is that, she doesn’t really support zero tolerance deportation, that’s her campaign manager pulling those strings. Her manager is not only behind the support for deportation, but also devised a terrorist attack and blamed it on illegal immigrants. Tuesday’s brother Spenser has been trying to save his mother from making a big mistake by continuing with this election any further. Spenser thankfully wasn’t alone as he was with that journalist that Tuesday took a liking to, Kyle.
Tumblr media
As for Carole and Tuesday, these two ladies have really been riding their luck and it’s been going pretty well for them. They were able to write the last few songs for their upcoming album, they were nominated for a Grammy, and a notable singer wants to sing with them at the award show. Crystal was a singer the girls have met once before and now she wants to perform with the duo at the Grammy’s. And it was a success!
Tumblr media
The girls are happy here, but they can’t help but notice the state of Mars and what could become of it. Tuesday’s mother could become the leader and put in a military state. Carole may never see her friend Ezekial again. Not to mention Angela’s slight fall from grace. The duo wants to do something. They plan with their closest allies to come up with a one-night performance. Gus, Ertegun, and the rest will get in contact with people they can trust. All Carole and Tuesday have to do is write the perfect song to unite everyone who will listen. Easier said than done! Although, this series has shown that these girls were able to make lyrics and music and having it turn out successful. Will it work? We get a conclusion in the final episode for most issues surrounding this series. Valerie listens to her son and drops out of the election, but not before telling off her campaign manager. Mr. Tao got his revenge on some enemies. Tao also paid Angela a visit and gave her a little bit of closure. Both he and Angela are genetically engineered children.
Tumblr media
And as for this special moment, many special singers came for this occasion. There were big superstars like Crystal. Past acquaintances from the Mars Brightest competition like Pytor and GGK (not Cybelle thankfully). A singer from back in the day, Flora. And even…Desmond?! I thought Desmond died! And best of all, Angela came too. It seems she’ll go back to singing for fun, like when she was a child. Carole and Tuesday brought those feelings back to Angela with their songs.
All of these artists together on one stage. This was the seven-minute miracle. This song united all who listened. And at the end, we get the message that this’ll be continued…
gasp
In your memories.
D’oh! Cock-tease! I came in thinking I was going to love this anime. I was not disappointed in that department. Netflix has a reputation for putting out hit-or-miss animes. This is definitely one of the best…after Violet Evergarden.
First, I want to talk about the music. Nowadays if the anime is a musical, the character’s seiyuu will do the singing. And that should be an expectation when I see big names like Maaya Sakamoto, Mamoru Miyano, Megumi Hayashibara, and Sumire Uesaka. But there were different singers for nearly every song. I don’t think I’ve heard this since watching NANA and I love it. Another unique thing I saw with Carole and Tuesday was that the girls did not have a spat that almost breaks up the group. We did not see that at all. These girls got along and did their music.
Next…this anime got really current with a lot of things. Yes, I know this anime is set a possible century from now…and for some reason Instagram still exists, but it can still feel relevant. Music is mostly done through A.I. influence and nowadays, it’s starting to look a lot like that. Everything is now thanks to things like A.I. generated art and Chat GPT. And of course, the big thing that stuck out at me was politics. I am in no way an expert in the subject. That wasn’t even my major in school (although coming really close to minoring in poli-sci). I’m just a regular U.S. citizen that keeps up with the news. Seeing the portion of the anime where Tuesday’s mother is talking about cracking down on illegal immigration on Mars really strikes a chord. Yeah, pretty much every administration has their way of dealing with that issue and all of them really did a really lousy job.
Tumblr media
I’m pretty sure this anime was making a point with what the Trump administration was doing with the MICE officers. Pfft. I know this really stands for Mars Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but seeing officers wearing uniforms that say MICE on it, I couldn’t help but chuckle a bit. Another bit that was struck during Carole and Tuesday was when it came to artistic freedom. Yeah, this is another thing that I’m noticing a lot of recently. Political figures cracking down on what artists can and can’t do or make an example of. Nowadays, I’m seeing certain states ban books, songs, and other such things. Seriously, just because Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton sing about rainbows, that needs to be banned? Tennessee, do better! And Florida, you’ve never been good. Just do the whole world a favor and drop in the ocean.
Yeah, I’m gonna stop my rambling here. This anime has been a treat and I encourage anyone who loves music to definitely check this out. Netflix has the whole series available for streaming. Now, if you don’t mind, I’m going to crack down on some Bungo Stray Dogs.

@lovesines right like none of their tunes even slap. except maybe “pick me up and dance” but other than that the show hypes up Carole and Tuesday to be, like, this revolutionary band. But the thing is, if they were a real band, I would never listen to them in real life! They don’t make your soul leave your body in an ethereal experience like AURORA, and they don’t bring you to tears like Radiohead. They don’t make you dance like They Might Be Giants, they don’t get stuck in your head like Bryan Dunn, and they don’t make you sing along like Mitski. They don’t tell a story with their music, they don’t send a political message with their music, their only appeal to the masses seems to be the fact that they don’t use an AI to write their music. Which falls apart when you remember that in the context of real life, there’s still people writing all the music. And some of the people Carole and Tuesday were singing against/with had waaaaaay better songs. Now I’m not saying I expect the writers to make Carole and Tuesday to do a cover like “fucking bullshit” but their music has like... no energy whatsoever. How am I to believe that they’re going to cause this “7-minute miracle” when their music makes me fall asleep. Also let them kiss already

I finished my favorite anime ever last night. Where do I even begin?
Not to be dramatic but Carole and Tuesday is a show about humanity. You know what I mean? It’s about how humans care about and help each other. Even when one is an immigrant and the other is the daughter of a politician with anti immigrant policies, they find each other and see each other as someone like themselves. As another lonely girl who wants to make music, and even when their backgrounds are revealed it does nothing to stop them from caring about each other. And it’s about how humans discriminate against each other too, with said anti immigrant political stuff in season two. And about human creativity, and questioning how AI might threaten it. All united by music, one of the most human things there is.
On top of that, pretty much every character feels like an actual person that could exist. Even the ones who act in over the top ways like dj ertegun. And the comedically rude producer Tobe, he feels like a weird guy your friend in the music industry would tell stories about at parties or something. I’ve never met Gus and he’s a fictional character but I swear I know him. And all the female character feel real too. Which, just speaking from personal experience, is rare. I’ve always been the type who could never relate to other girls, and that goes double for female characters. A vast majority of the time when I’m watching a series a female character does something that feels petty, selfish, or just dumb and I end up hating them. In the shows where this doesn’t happen I usually relate to a male character way more than any of the female ones. And once in a blue moon. There’s a female character I like and/or can sort of relate to. Carole and Tuesday is one of those blue moons, and I think it’s because the characters feel so much like real people. I like all the female characters (except Angela’s mom but she wasn’t supposed to be likeable). Even Angela, a character type I’d normally hate because characters like her are usually more of an archetype than an actual person. Usually more of a silly frilly pop star who cares about fame and fortune and lacks deeper backstory and motivation. Rather than a dimensional character with realistic struggles that make them sympathetic and show how strong they are as a person, which Angela is and I think she’s awesome!
And I love that she’s the rival character! And what a good rival character she is and how the rivalry has no victor!! The show isn’t here to tell you that pop music is dumb and soulless and “real musicians” like Carole and Tuesday are superior. She’s just their rival. Who’s talented and makes compelling music of her own. Even when it was produced by AI, it was also her talent as a vocalist and performer that got her to the top. And in the end she started to gain more independence as an artist.
It all wrapped up showing how people use music to speak up about injustice. And it wasn’t a super in depth political commentary (though it definitely got political). It wasn’t about some huge revolution or saving the world. It was just two girls who made music bringing people together. Using their music to tell as many people as they could a message they thought was important. Humans who cared about their fellow humans using what power they had to hopefully make the world a better place.
Anyway this all is just what I liked about it and I think if an alien asked me what to watch on netflix that would show them what humans are like. I’d tell em to watch this.

carole and tuesday is not anti black if black characters are being discriminated against in the 2nd half of the show. it's mostly white cis straight people shown in a negative light. the mermaids sisters are treated no different from the fire bros or Tobe who are not androgynous. Desmond is androgynous is not bad or a joke, But any group of people can be bad and there is nothing wrong with skip he's just a chill guy who wanted to play some music. at least there is variety. - sincerely a black NB
Hey there, I did not actually watch the 2nd half of the show so I really don’t know what happened in it. When I watched the first half though, Skip’s introduction seemed really off to me. I thought it was playing into stereotypes that the girls were afraid of him (and that the audience was I guess supposed to assume he was aggressive / dangerous?) in his introduction scene toward the beginning of the series. I also thought his character design being a like, jumpsuit was in bad taste because it feels reminiscent of like prison jumpsuits.
But yeah, I’m white so maybe I was overthinking the things I saw. I still did not appreciate the transphobia of Dahlia and the mermaid sisters + the “predatory lesbian” homophobic stereotype dialed up to 11 that cybelle was. I’m glad that there were some real efforts at diverse characters, Carole is perfect and amazing, but some of them truly felt like a step back and it kinda soured the whole thing for me. :/
Edit: I will also add, Dahlia fits exactly with a Japanese homophobic/transphobic stereotype called okama. In a vacuum she could be lauded as a failed attempt at a trans character but considering that, along with her abusive tendencies to Angela, it doesn’t seem like the author intended to portray her in a positive light in any way.

At a Mars jail
Tuesday: “Mission accomplished! My mom is leaving her attempts at being a president with those awful racist policies!”
Carole: “Too bad we still got thrown in a jail cell for a week.”
Crystal: “Hi, Skip.”
Skip: “Hi.”
Ertegun: “Well, I can add being in the slammer to my curriculum as a musician. Maybe I can join an environmentalist protest later this year.”
Pyotr: “Here’s your boy Pyotr from the interior of the jail, and next to me is my companion GGK.”
GGK: “Greetings.”
Gus: “This can’t be happening!”
Tobe: “Why are you such a nervous wreck right now? This is the third time I have been behind bars, and I can tell you we will get out soon.”
Gus: “It’s not about that! My ex and my current crush are talking to each other!”
Marie: “Gus did that?”
Flora: “Yes.”
Marie: “Of course he would.”
Gus: “I am doomed!”
Angela: “Katy, call my lawyer now.”
Katy: “The cops confiscated my phone.”
Angela: “Dammit. I hope Tao isn’t looking at this situation from wherever he is hiding.”
Tuesday: “Hey, Carole! I think this was Amer’s cell.”
Carole: “How do you know?”
Tuesday: “It has an engraving that says ‘Amer x Carole’.”
Carole: “Aww! He is so adorable!”

Carole & tuesday has filler? Cowboy bebop must be 80% filler then. 🙄
Haven’t seen Cowboy Bebop, so you’ll have to tell me. But personally I do feel that a lot of the recent C&T episodes have been filler. Please understand that I don’t dislike the show and I’m not trying to hate on it by any means. I’m allowed to like this show or the characters and still be critical. I’ve been reluctantly disappointed ever since the american idol arc ended, because to me it feels like the story has been dragging, when really it doesn’t have the time to drag. It drags, but then makes up for the dragging with plot convenience, which is just irresponsible writing and pacing.
C&T are trying to make their big break in the music industry--and yet, we’ve had episodes (or large chunks of episodes) dedicated to:
a corrupted AI that drinks beer and convinces the girls to make a clearly awful music video that they end up scrapping
the girls recruiting a dangerous alcoholic producer who--let’s be real--only agrees to be C&T’s producer because this is an anime. (this is an example of the plot convenience I mentioned)
the very tr//ump-like political climate of Mars, even though it has had nothing to do with C&T’s musical progress
a once-popular singer who requests to meet with the C&T girls and then decides he’s experienced everything he wants to experience in this life and passes away in front of the girls. (this is also an example of plot convenience. It doesn’t force the plot forward the same way Tobe’s episode does, but it also doesn’t make sense to me, given C&T’s music--by the standards of this world, not my personal standards--is called unremarkable and plain.)
Ertegun’s AI producer running off with his money, causing Ertegun to declare bankruptcy and crash with Roddy for a few days. C&T have no effect on restoring Ertegun’s motivation, and Ertegun finds the criminal AI at the end of the episode.
the weather machine breaking for seemingly no other reason than for C&T to have a dramatic sad-walk as it snows after Tuesday bursts into tears over a few-days-long crush she developed on a reporter.
A lot of the things I’ve listed above don’t have any lasting effect on the girls’ careers, and we wouldn’t have noticed if they hadn’t happened.
Again, I feel the need to emphasize that I don’t dislike this show. I’ve recommended C&T to a lot of people--especially during the first half of the show--and my disappointment with the show has been a very slow progression over the past 8-10 episodes. I’ve seen dips in the animation quality, and the plot often feels like it’s dragging, even though the girls have so much to do before they successful enough to live up to that little quote Gus says at the beginning of each episode. (”It was like a miracle...” etc)

There is some good Queer rep in Carole and Tuesday. It’s not really transphobic. The mermaid sisters are not even trans, they are non-binary . Tobe is more violent than the mermaid sisters. He swings a axe when we 1st saw him. Gus’s ex wife is bi with her lesbian girlfriend. Benito (male bi Dark skinned judge). Pyotr ( his 2nd song love yourself ) is about him coming out. Both Desmond and Dahlia are androgynous due to the Martian environment and Dahlia is portrayed as neutral in the end not bad
I already gave my opinion on all of this here:
https://themardbard.tumblr.com/post/188415134356/how-is-carole-and-tuesday-transphobic-im-legit
Don't get me wrong, I love C&T, and I appreciate it not only for its good progressive strides, but also for that sweet, sweet music. 👌 But it would be remiss of me not to bring attention to transphobic writing where I see it.

Carole & Tuesday ep.21
It's too late

md3 watches Given ep1
...
Maybe it's because I’m having a bad day, or maybe my distaste for most abrasive Romance genre tropes is showing.  But I did not have good reactions.  If I didn’t get spoiled on how good this series will eventually get, I probably wouldn’t continue.  Gawd I’m impatient for this to get good.
Mafuyu is sweet though.  ^___^
8:26 PM 9/27/2019
I'm going to watch Given.  After today, I'm too tired and defeated to do anything more ambitious than react to anime. ;_;
And this morning I watched some clips that suggested Mafuyu's tragic past?  I"m really hoping his childhood friend/boyfriend didn't dump him.  They both seemed so nice and in love.  Then again, if his boyfriend died that would also be very sad.  But at least it's not indirectly saying that Mafuyu was worth dumping.  He seems like such a sweet, fragile kid.
given Episode 1 – Boys in the Band
"I'm not lonely."  I know it's a cliche now for an anime character to try to convince themselves of this with internal monologue, but it's still effectively sad and still pulls the heart-strings.  ;~;
Uenoyama is too sleepy to eat lunch and his friend asks him to play basketball instead of get bread?  omg
Everyone is sure staring at Uenoyama as he walks by though.  I wonder why.
Jeeze!  I don't know why Uenoyama has to be so upset!  What was Mafuyu doing that was even creepy anyway?  Not talking?  Sure, its more common for an anime character to leave when they've discovered they're in someone else's usual nap/hideout spot, but Mafuyu was nice about making room for Uenoyama.  And now he's throwing a tantrum about getting Mafuyu's hopes up and his naptime interrupted?  Careful or you're going to start hitting my real pet peeves and I'll drop this series.
He just asked a stranger to teach him now to play guitar...Okay?  Well, that escalated quickly.  ^^;
Thank you, opening theme.  I feel like I need some music to really set the tone---no, just get into this story/world.  I'm the kind of person who hates that Netflix skips opening/ending themes.
jfc  I know I've had a moderately bad day, but this series is just starting and it hit ANOTHER one of my pet peeves?!  Siblings who are nasty to each other?!  Ug.  If it weren't for all the fandom hype over this show and the nice clips I've seen of it beforehand, I would give up on it right now.  Or maybe I need to stop pausing every few seconds to write and dwell on the bad stuff, and just watch the show.  Ok, I'll try that.  I want to record all my initial thoughts for this series if I end up getting deep into the fandom, but rumination isn't good, after all.  Maybe all the annoying parts will go faster if I don't pause to react to all of them.
"Now that I think about it, I guess I almost cired when I first broke a string, too, becuase I thought I'd broken my guitar"  Aw, Uenoyama is showing empathy.  (Finally.)
See?  Mafuyu is reasonable.  He paid Uenoyama back for the strings and everything.
I think watching clips and hearing the fandom chatter before actually watching this series was a mistake.  I've been immune to spoilers for most of my life, but they've been starting to actually hurt my viewing in these past few years.  But it's not like when the shock of character deaths were dulled by knowing beforehand, with Madoka Magica.  This time, it's more like I'm _impatient_ to get to the good parts I saw before.
So Mafuyu is stalking him now?  Now that I think about it, all those BL manga I used to read were quirky like this, huh?  ...Really???
I should have mentioned this before, but this background music is a little odd. It's like it doesn't quite match the tone of this very solid, real-feeling animation.
But if he's a total newbie, he won't be able to tell the difference between a "godly performance" and a mediocre one!
"Something cool".  LOL  ^-^
OMG are they totally just riffing?  That's pretty cool.  ^___^
"Uecchi"?  Is this in Kansai?  LOL
This guilt Uenoyama keeps dwelling on is really helping make him a sympathizable character.
"Uesama"?  LOL
I'm glad Mafuyu tired the school's music club and that his reason for returning to Uenoyama's band was that he was much cooler.  I'll buy that reasoning.
What is this exploision effect?  I know the animation in this series so far looks great, like they threw lots of money at it, but wow...  Was it supposed to look cheesey on purpose?
Well, this ending theme is soothing and nice.
But I'm not caught by this series.  So far, the primary couple has proven so be one half too angry, kinda mean, and plain grumpy to me.  And the other half is so sweet and fragile seeming, that I just feel sorry when he gets yelled at.  I feel like Mafuyu is just Uenoyama's punching bag, even if his actions are driving Uenoyama crazy.  Why does he have to over-react?
After a month or so of being tempted to watch this series, I finally gave in today because I couldn't wait to get to answering the questions of those tragic backstories I saw some clips and spoilers of.  And maybe I'll stick around to get my answers.  But I can't say I like this series in and of itself so far. Mafuyu is sweet and intriguing, but I don't feel attached to Uenoyama so far.  I kind of want to watch something else, or just browse through the AkiRyu fandom instead.  ...In fact, I will do that.  No need to jump into ep2.
But when I come back to this series, I should react to it like a movie.  Just watch it without stopping, then write whatever still stuck out to me enough to have inherently gotten a reaction out of me, at the end.  I shouldn't just stop every few minutes to write.
Maybe the thing that bugs me with Given ep1 is that I prefer couples who actually like each other enough to instantly click.  At least get along together.  I abandoned my favorite shoujo manga circle because they kept insisting on this "falling in love with the person who annoys the heroine (the most)" cliche.  I generally tell people that I don't like Romance genre movies because so many of them revolve around couples who confuse friction and adrenaline for "passion" and attachment.  But that never sat well with me. I never liked the "argue/hate someone so much, you don't realize you're in love with them", as my aunt once put it.  Even the couples I like which might be mistaken for that trope actually arne't as abrasive as many filler episodes would caricature them to be: Ranma/Akane, Ichigo/Rukia. Maybe that's why I'd prefer to browse the AkiRyu fandom right now.  They actually enjoy spending time with each other!  From the first time they met!  ...I dunno...  Maybe Given will get very good, very fast, after this first ep.  Lots of BL manga had rough starts but turned into great series of scenes that were emotionally moving to experience, once the initial situation that contrived the couple to get together, is settled.  Why wouldn't Given be the same?
I probably shouldn't post this reaction to my blog.  Or maybe have no tags, so the fandom won't come after me.  I don't need flames for my flippant venting that will likely change drastically once I get further into the series and find what I liked about those spoiler clips.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The more time passed after watching Given ep1, the more I tried to use everything else to TRY to figure out why I wasn’t in love with Given (yet).

TOBE!!! CAROLE & TUESDAY EPISODE 14 LIVE REACTION
by MemoryNK
https://youtu.be/58OI_yufctQ
OMG THIS SHOW!  Just a few clips, edited, talked over by commentary, and I'm already freaking half-crying!  GODDAMNIT!  ;o;  Carole's dad found her, he and his wife wanted to keep her but the wife died and he was unjustly sent to prison, and now he's still on parole and has to return to prison or his parole restrictions on Earth or something---!  ;O;!!!!!!!!!!!  THIS SHOW---! And Carole takes it as hope and something to look forward to, vs typical cliche drama contrived anger!  This show goes for the heart-felt warmth, instead of the contrived anger drama! ;U;  I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!
Carole and Tuesday season 1 part 2 doesn't release on Netflix for probably a few more MONTHS.  Maybe it was a mistake to see spoilers.  But I've been seeing songs from season 1 part 2 all this time.  But actual scenes, spoiling the story...I went too far.  Maybe I shouldn't have.
But only because I want to note my emotional reactions.  Especially when I'm having such trouble getting into Given.  I need to now if Carole & Tuesday were able to grab me from ep1, first intros of the main characters,...Because Given is failing hard on that!  And I want to know if I'm justified in not being as attached to Given, or if I was just having a bad day (I wasted all yesterday on that horrible cooking that even made me physically ill ~___~;!)
6:49 PM 9/28/2019
I came in from my daily walk and had to immediately watch Carole & Tuesday becasue while I was walking, Mafuyu's song from Given was stuck in my head, even though I didn't even know it well.  I started daydreaming about Tuesday and Mafuyu hanging out, jamming, etc., and I couldn't listen to my podcasts while walking anymore.  I had to switch to Carole & Tuesday.
7:21 PM 9/28/2019
https://mysticdragon3md3.tumblr.com/post/187499907672/md3-watches-carole-tuesday-season-1-part-1
Re-reading my reactions to watching Carole & Tuesday for the first time, I'm surprised how little I say about their characters (until much later episodes).  I wonder if it means they were so agreeable that I didnt' have to rant anything about them.  Because in contrast to my reactions to watching Given ep1 for the first time, I just kept going on and on about their characters---how mean Uenoyama was.  ...omg...I think I don't like Uenoyama.  I mean, I LOVE Carole, and Tuesday is really sweet and cute, but I never mentioned anything about that in my reactions from earlier this month until like halfway through season1 part1.  In fact, a few minutes ago was the first time I reblogged some Carole & Tuesday art with tags like "#my girls" and "i love them!".  I'd hate to say it, but maybe I only realized how good of characters Carole & Tuesday are, because of how abrasive Uenoyama's introduction has been for me.  I mean, I always thought Carole's brash confidence was cool and Tuesday was sweet, but I guess I was taking it as a given, instead of something extraordinarily rare.  ...I'm trying really hard to get into Given, you guys.  All the clips and spoilers I've seen and the music have been good.  But it's becoming clear to me now that Uenoyama is a barrier.  I used to read a lot of BL and those protagonists do tend to be really quirky or always upset to end up in the plot situation for comedic sakes...But when will the series get to Uenoyama being stupidly in love with Mafuyu so I can laugh at him for being an idiot around him?  I'm impatient over here, especially when I usually drop a series as soon as it centers too much on an abrasive character.  There are 20+ anime series every season and 4 seasons every year, and I've got a big backlog of anime to watch, so I can afford to be picky---I _HAVE TO_ be picky.
6:18 PM 9/29/2019
I've been really bugged by how I have not enjoyed the first episode of Given.  Maybe I got my expectations too high, after watching it because of so much hype over it, and watching spoiler clips that were really intriguing.  But what really gets me, after having finally seen ep1, is that Uenoyama is not very likable!  Why does Mafuyu even like him?!  Well, Mafuyu is a sweethear and will forgive anything, ti seems...I think the problem is that _I_ as an audience member see no reason to like Uenoyama yet.  Why would I want this jerk to continue getting angry as adorable, frail Mafuyu?  Mafuyu doesn't deserve that!  ;o;
The really bad thing are the comparisons.  I've been re-watching "Carole and Tuesday" repeatedly this month, and though it's not (blatantly) a romance story, there's just so much reason to want to see these 2 characters always be together.  I love watching them, they enjoy each other's company, they are nice to each other equally,---!  And I just realized that Given's Uenoyama and Mafuyu are similar to Kageyama and Hinata from Haikyuu.  Granted, I didn't really get into the KageHina ship (it just had some cute doujins that I personally thought were too dissimilar to the canon characters for me to think of the ship while I watched Haikyuu), but I LIKED the dynamic between Kageyama and Hinata.  WHY?  All Kageyama did was yell and treat Hinata badly whenever he could!...No...That's not true.  The story made certain from the very beginning to establish Kageyama as a more noble person inside, even though he was just so oblivious to how humans should interact, he only knew how to give commands and yell as a frustrated setter/commander.  Kageyama's first personality-establishing scene was him saving Hinata from bullies and proving that he doesn't approve of low, bully-like behaviors.  And I think pegging Kageyama, from the beginning, as seeking penance and his angsting over his regrets, the the whole first season culminating with him learning how to properly share bonds with people vs bossing them around, and thus finally remedying his past regretted behaviors---It all really turned and angry, easily annoyed character that could have become abrasive, into a character of sympathy.  (Plus, he was cool at what he does.  Which is generally another trait a main character nees to garner audience respect.)  So why couldn't Uenoyama do that from the beginning too?!?!  >O<!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!  It's driving me crazy!  I was supposed to like Given!!!!!!!!!  I _WANT_ to like Given!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ;O;!!!
