Another instance of the communion rune apparently hidden in plain sight. This time on the main doors to the Grand Cathedral. It's a bit more abstract but this motif is layered across the width of the doors.

The Hunter Rune is Upside-Down: The Beast Rune
Tumblr media
Dangling, upside-down rune etched in one's mind. Symbol of a hunter. By focusing one's thoughts on this rune, a hunter loses all Blood Echoes, but awakens afresh, as if it were all just a bad dream.
The Hunter's Mark, aka the Hunter Rune, is one of the Caryll runes; one that was branded into the player character's mind directly by a Great One and ties them to the Hunter's Dream. But what actually is it symbolically? And more specifically, why is it dangling?
Other people have compared it to the tarot card The Hanged Man, which is a comparison that's supported by various proto-Hunter runes found inscribed the deeper layers of the Pthumerian labyrinth and on one of the chalice ritual tombstones in the Hunter's Dream. As well, there's the hanging corpse in the Fishing Hamlet suggesting that the Hunter rune may be depicting a method of exsanguination. That gives us one side of the puzzle, but the Caryll runes aren't human symbols, they're transcriptions of the voices of the Great Ones.
So, let's go back to "dangling, upside down rune". If it's upside-down, what does it look like right side up?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You could also say it looks like the Communion or Guidance runes, and I plan on exploring those comparisons in other posts, but the first thing I was reminded of when I flipped the Hunter rune "right side up" was the Beast rune.
And that makes a good amount of sense; Hunters invariably turn into Beasts once they lose themselves to the blood. Comparing the two runes, the Hunter rune is simple and geometric in a way that reminds me of the real life runic script, in particular Algiz. Meanwhile the Beast rune is rough and undeniably biological-looking, almost more grown than carved. It's also worth noting that while the Hunter rune has 3 "prongs", the Beast rune has six. I'm not sure if three has any significance in Bloodborne, but six is the number of fingers that Great Ones and their kin have. The clawed hands of scourge beasts do look similar to the Beast rune, but no Beast enemy to my knowledge has six fingers, so the rune might reflect the touch of the Great Ones.
I interpret "Beast" as a wild, untamed, and unrefined relative to "Hunter", reflecting the dangerous effect that the raw influence of the Great Ones has on unprepared humanity. It's unclear whether "Beast" is a mutation or precursor; a question that reflects the chicken-and-egg relationship between Hunters and the Beasts they hunt.

Vicious Cycle of humanity reflected on Astral Clocktower Dial
This is more philosophical than solid theory, but @heraldofcrow and @fantomette22 have been talking about Runes in this ( x ) post and I could not help but to add my observations!
Tumblr media
(Image from here ( x ), apparently)
Interestingly, Runes placement on the dial DOES suggest some sort of a vicious cycle! I personally see Communion as the start of the "day" - just like it is on actual watch, and it is followed by Radiance; so, good, 'saint' even, intentions, turning into Crusader purist vice (that is what Executioners are)! Three curved lines remind me of 'Hunt the Great Ones' + 'Three Eye Cords' notes, so a sort of breaking point of human race where religion went them to ruin and they seek to drag it down... Next follow Hunter, then Beast, then Beast's Embrace - a very self-explanatory progression, then 'all things return to Sea'.
But also, not only they return to Sea, but also come from it, right? Lake and Sea runes describe same function in the lore - to conceal the secrets and Great Ones with great volume of water, but whereas the sea is infinite and chaotic, a lake is more or less secluded and small space, possible to observe, so this is where people mark some goalposts and ideas of knowledge pursuit, rather than being all mystical and submissive to what is beyond their normal understanding!
This next Rune looks similar to Impurity but not is it, I talked about my headcanons for it in that post but all in all I think this is intentional, and carries similar sentiment - discovering 'filth' within man that holds them back! Oedon Writhe is a Rune that lets you recover bullets from visceral attacks, and Formless Oedon, a Rune that follows, lets you simply keep more bullets at once! Considering how true nature of Oedon is said to be bloodspill, and nature of visceral attacks, it seems to hint at unethical experiments in the name of scientifical advance!
After this, Guidance, Eye and Moon likewise feel very self-explanatory - have a hunch where to go, learn to discover more, and then Moon seems to be some sort of hubris and chaos in the context - all norms and morality are lost, some sort of objective reality erases humanity as concept by its very gravity, and humans return to the Communion in search of something to hold them back and mark the limitations, thus returning civilisation, you feel?
In this context, parallels of Runes makes sense too! Lake and Communion are parallel - both reflect marking the borders and rules and norms of what do humans want to accomplish. Radiance is parallel with Oedon Runes - both (well, three) reflect becoming cruel for 'noble cause', meanwhile Guidance and Hunter/Beast Runes reflect sort of no-return point where humans are misled by what they thought they understood but they didn't, and then Moon and Sea are sort of complete chaos past which humans must start over.
Besides, that makes two mini cycles - the day half is about religion, and the evening half is about science! Yet both lead to ruin of humans... Sounds right about trademark Soulsborne depression for me [shrugs]

Reference to the runes on my Bloodborne oc Calliope.
I always liked the implication that you had to essentially brand yourself to enhance yourself. So all the hunters of the dream, or those who were able to use the Caryll runes, just had either a line of brands or ones scattered around their body.

Surprise 3 AM headcanons post! I know I like joking that the anti-Rom character is Simon conceptually, but in fact, Karel/Caryll is probably more fitting for the role!
Simon's thing is unveiling the corruption and the crime that is already there, and Rom (antagonistic) parallel only works under pushing her concealment as protecting Micolash's crimes particularly! But 1) Brador already exists for the archetype and 2) lore focuses rather on Rom concealing Eldrich Truth in general, because what Byrgenwerth unleashed is too much for the low-insights, and Mensis could just take advantage of it!
I already talked in my other post how Caryll seems to be free of all bias, since his runes include Kin and Beast ones, Church and Vileblood ones even? But that's basically what he is...? Consider: he disregards restrictions of both the institutions and the ethics of infodumping the "unprepared" people with the knowledge they might be not even able to use for good! Whether they will be responsible or succumb to hubris, his job is to deliver the information. I love to think Byrgenwerth + Church were the ones to prohibit some runes (like Beast), and that Caryll believed in teaching Runes language to everyone whereas Byrgenwerth, and then Healing Church wanted to gatekeep them only to their brightest (like Ludwig and Adeline who could see their own Runes). Rom though? Under assumption that she even understands what she is doing, her barrier is only penetrable for those with high Insight, so only for those who are "ready"!
Maria, too, is close enough, but she seems to be disappointed in the concept of learning too much altogether. I just think this is funny to think that all most important Byrgenwerth scholars had very unique and clashing position. Caryll standing by revealing the information with a disregard for whether people are ready, Rom sparing people the horrors unless they are ready, Laurence choosing FOR others what they should know feeling qualified, Micolash believing in providing truth in its most horrifying form but only to people he deems worthy..... and then Patches, Yurie and Willem simply learning with the help of the Great Ones while preserving whatever humanity they can like normal people vjhcjgjvng
But yeah, the best scholars are basically like those memes where several people point guns at each other xD Especially those three.. Rom seems like the only "nice" one, the most detached from the concept of deciding for others 🤔👀

Caryll Runes descriptions & what they do
I think someone already mention it but all the Caryll runes weren't translated or discovered by Runesmith Caryll themselves.
Based on the different descriptions, I might have figure out winch ones exactly.
I regroup and resume them in 2 categories. In the middle of doing it, I decided to add what each runes do as well without actually copy-paste every descriptions (there's 20 in total).
To know where to find them in the game, I recommend this really great and complementary post ! With every types of runes and where to find them ! With the one I just made I think it perfectly resume everything that need to be known about the Caryll runes.
Let's begin with the Rune Workshop Tool description to know more about Caryll and the runes.
Tumblr media
Runes describe as being « a secret symbol left by Caryll » :
Tumblr media
12/20 Runes. We can conclude that this ones where translated by Caryll themselves. if we don't count the covenant runes they're probably the most useful and used runes. Funny how the radiance & Corruption runes are both here too...
Other runes, just called « Caryll Runes » :
(Probably not not made by Caryll ? But may have been translated by them?  Or Caryll had nothing to do with them but they’re still runes translating inhuman sounds so they’re just called like this)
Tumblr media
8/20 Runes.
Bonus, Runes on the Astral Clocktower :
Tumblr media
By Sophie on Jerks sans frontieres that you may know from the Sinclair lore channel (Bloodborne & others video games podcasts).
There's 14 runes here but 2 of them don't exist in game or don't fully match with something we know (probably cut content but it's really intriguing).

Project progress!
Patchwork Tarot Bag for a patchwork tarot deck.
Pattern from @toothsalad's Etsy.
It's my first time sewing and I am so so bad at it, but I'm having fun learning.
I switched from the Moon Caryll Rune to Communion at the last moment. Might add a tiny Moon rune with fabric paint to the bottom later.
