Catafalque – Dybbuk (2023)
Tumblr media
James looks at Dybbuk, the new album from UK experimental drone doom/noise act Catafalque, released October 13 on Aural Music.
I believe that I said “if hell had a sound, Catafalque have captured a portion of it in their music” in my review of the band’s 2020 album We Will Always Suffer, and if I didn’t, then I’m saying it now. The UK act once again bring us an offering of soul crushing auditory oppression on their latest album. Sound wise the album is a blend of drone doom, harsh noise, black metal and industrial, with an extremely heavy focus on atmosphere and distortion. Fans of Khanate, The Body, Merzbow and Godflesh will find plenty to love, as the band explore the four stages of possession through the lens of a victim of the malevolent spirit attached to the cursed Dybbuk box.

Album Review: Catafalque - Dybbuk (Aural Music / Code666)
Your soul is up for grabs, and Catafalque have the soundtrack to its collection.
Catafalque deliver drone doom metal with strong influences of noise and industrial, resulting in an extreme, experimental and uncompromising sound. Their new album Dybbuk, inspired by a malicious spirit from ancient folklore, will be released on October 13th, 2023, via Aural Music / Code666. Wow. Just, wow. Somehow Catafalque have managed to capture the feeling of dread and horror that anyone…

Thy Catafalque
One of my favorite releases this year, a stunning mix of metal, folk, classical, electronica, and whatever else Tamás Kátai felt like, as usual. From bludgeoning death metal to ominous horns to spacey synths to atmospheric, emotionally gripping black metal, this album has it all. If a breadth of style and superbly-blended disparate elements are your thing, this album is worth spinning.
The album can be purchased from Bandcamp and Season of Mist.

what black metal bands are you listening to? :D
ayy, thanks for asking <3 I’ve been dying to talk about this one!
there’s this one Hungarian avant garde/melodic black metal project named Thy Catafalque that is legit one of my favorite music acts ever (I say project because they’re the brainchild of one particular musician, but they started performing live about a year and a half ago! here’s a live video they’re so cool). their catalog is basically half energetic growling black metal, and half the most gorgeous, haunting melodic songs you’ve ever heard on a metal album. you can check out their album Rengeteg if you’re so inclined because it’s on Youtube, but for individual songs I’d recommend Fekete mezők (this one is easily in my top five songs ever written), Sárember, Töltés and Kel keleti szél. oh and definitely try and see if any of their lyrics got translated because they’re just magical.
other than them, I do occasionally get a craving for some Cradle of Filth... and then I get violently yeeted back to the time I was 14 and I thought they were the coolest thing ever. the secondhand embarrassment is real lol. oh, and Alcest! although my favorite song of theirs is technically not metal? it’s the Perturbator version/remix of Sapphire and it’s just lovely.
