EXAMPLE ELEMENT:
EXPLAIN WHAT THE ORIGIN OF THE ELEMENT IS
WHERE DID YOU GET THIS ELEMENT FROM?
WHY IS THE ELEMENT SIGNIFICANT   TO YOU?
HOW IS THIS ELEMENT SIGNIFICANT TO YOUR CREATIVITY?
Poppas Guitar
This guitar belonged to my Poppa, it is a Spanish Orchestra Guitar.
It was gifted to me by him shortly before he passed away.
This is very dear to me as it is one of the last pieces of him that I have left with me.
Music has always been part of my creative process and switching between different creatives outlets lets me stay refreshed from different projects. Guitar is a hobby I have been in and out of learning and picking up since I was about 7 years old to feels like a natural outlet to me.
My Stereo
This stereo was situated in my family home all throughout mu childhood
I was gifted it by my dad as a hand me down when he got an upgrade.
It holds many childhood memories from my family living room. I have since decorated it with stickers and it continues to supply the soundtrack to my life.
Music drive my creative process to allow me to stay focused or find inspiration. I use thisto gage my mood.
Cat Pirate Ring
Ring from the NZ Jewellery Designer Nick Von K, a local independent store on K road.
My mum gifted this to me for my 19th birthday as I love pirates
Holds value to me as I love the design style and my mum has some rings from the same designer
The rings inspires me to stay true to myself and develop my own personal style and aesthtic further.
Arm Chair
I am unsure of the origin of this as it was acquired from an op shop, I like to think it has been through many homes and places and people and has its own story.
I got this from the local Ellerslie Op Shop when I moved into my flat and had my best friend help me carry it into her car in a funny series of events.
This armchair fuels my creativity, I sits in my bedroom by the window and acts as my own creative sanctuary.
Hello Kitty
Hello Kitty was originally designed by Yuko Shimizu and was intended to be a simple and cute character that could be marketed to young girls.
My friend Lucy and I collect the kids Hello Kitty Magazines sold in the supermarket and do the puzzles and activities together. I have started collecting the posters as well.
Hello kitty signifies my friendships and is a cute collectable icon that I love to decorate my room with, i love the design and clean lines.
Hello Kitty relates to my creativity as Sanrio characters design have influenced areas of my illustration styles.
St Pauli (consider the st pauli type face and talk about iconic logo and design history, but make concise)
Hamburg Football Team, this label came from a Tee Shirt
My Dad brought back a gift for my Mum from his most recent trip back to Germany, where our family lives.
Hamburg is where my Dad went to university and where my parents lived for a period in their life. I identify with the and feel a strong affinity to the City.
I have always been drawn to the design of the St Pauli logo with the provocative skull and cross bones icon and the bold clean type. Is unique for a football team.
Ed Hardy Boots
Don Ed Hardy (born 1945) is an American tattoo artist known for his tattoos, strong influence on the development of modern tattoo styles, and his eponymous apparel and accessories brand.
I bought these boots from Depop.
I value these boots as a piece of vintage archive clothing. The intricate, rebellious and eccentric designs speak to my     tastes.
They speak to my self expression which I love to show through the outlet of fashion.
Kate Sylvester Ma Tee
Early Kate Sylvester design from the 90’s under the label ‘Sister’, my mum helped design the shirt and came up with the copy text when thinking of the rudest thing a man had said to her, “you know you want it”
Was handed down to my mum to me when 90s fashion came back into fashion.
Significant to me as my mum and I will be wearing this shirt at the same points in our lives, there are many parallels between us and it feels very special that she allows me to have it.
The design always reminds me of where i get my creativity from, my mum. And how she allowed me to experiment with art and took me to art classes which has lead and shaped me into who i am today and my love for creative practises.

Otto Dix Book
Otto Dix Book from the Tate Gallery collection, originally published in 1992
I bought this from Jasons Books, a second hand book store in the city that my best friends grandmother owns.
I am interesting in the expressionism theory behind his work and the time period of post-war artwork, specifically the portrait of Sylvia Von Harden, in which the colours and andrognous themes greatly inspire my work.
Notebook
Paperblanks Venetian Mornings Fiamma Notebook from Gordon Harris
Birthday gift from my brother
Gesture as a gift is special to allow me to my creativity
Notebooks are where all my ideas are born, the notion o f pen on paper allows my thoughts to flow and kickstarts my creative process

Oh look! More Cats soundtracks from my collection of Cats merchandise and related items. These are all 2CDs except of course the Highlights soundtrack from the 2019 movie. All were purchased new and sealed.
I currently own most of the complete recordings made for Cats. I think I am only missing the French Cast and the 1983 Japan Cast Complete recordings, but I may be incorrect. I have not started purchasing Highlights soundtracks for the shows without Complete recordings made, but I am heading towards that (looking at you Vienna recording).
Pictured are:
Cats Highlights From The Motion Picture Soundtrack
Cats Complete Original London Cast Recording
Cats Complete Original Broadway Cast Recording
Cats Complete Australian 1985 Cast Recording
Cats Japan/Shiki Cats 2019 Cast Complete Soundtrack (Special Memorial Edition)
Cats Japan/Shiki Cats 1989 Cast Complete Soundtrack
Cats Complete Hamburg 1986 Cast Soundtrack
As I said in my previous post with the soundtracks in vinyl format, the music of Cats is the important aspect of the show for me, and it is always fun to listen to a soundtrack you have not heard before.
I know that the 2019 movie is not everyone's cup of morning tea, but it contains some of favourite versions of the songs, and you cannot fault the brilliant orchestrations found throughout. I LOVE the version of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer found on here! It is my favourite song from the 2019 movie and my favourite version of the song. Even if you have seen the movie, and felt that the songs were lacking, listen to the Highlights soundtrack! It incorporates some additional instrumentations in some songs, and slightly extends others. It brings the vocals and instruments to the front of the mix and is a bit of a different experience than hearing the songs within the movie. I have to mention that Robbie Fairchild's (as Munkustrap) vocals are IMMACULATE, and I LOVE Francesca Hayward's vocals and her version of Beautiful Ghosts! The version of Memory on here is (in my opinion) so much better and more powerful than the live singing version in the movie. Skimbleshanks is a tour de force, as you may have heard. I have listened to this Highlights soundtracks probably over 50 times waiting for the movie to be released physically on BluRay/DVD, because I needed my Cats fix (admittedly in secret).
I also very highly recommend listening to the Australian Cast Recording if you have not! The soundtrack places a bit more prominence on brass instruments, especially saxophone. It is very fun! It is also the only Cast Recording sung in English that includes The Pekes and The Pollicles. I really enjoy the version of Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats on here, as it adds an interesting rolling drum line through parts of the song.
I am always on the lookout for more Cats soundtracks to add to my collection!

Riku Nanase RabbiTube Rabbit TV Part 1: Spending Time With Riku
Part 2 | Part 3
Staff: …Now, on to the RabbiTube project.
Staff: Our plan is to introduce the videos by featuring clips on NEXT Re:vale!
Staff: We’d really appreciate it if you could show a side of yourselves that people don’t usually get to see on TV. It’s a pleasure to be working with you!
Momo: We’ve got high hopes for you guys!
Yuki: Feel free to fully expose yourselves to the public.
Mitsuki Izumi: Ahaha, please be gentle with us! Looks like I’m gonna have to do a RabbiTube study marathon..!
Gaku Yaotome: By the way, Tenn, I saw you watching RabbiTube videos the other day. Do you know any good ones?
Tenn Kujo: …I was just watching cat videos.
Gaku Yaotome: Cats, huh. That’s not gonna help us learn anything.
Ryunosuke Tsunashi: …I think they might help! You could learn ways to entertain and soothe people…
Gaku Yaotome: Ryu, not all of us are gonna be able to do that…
Yuki: …I’m liking the idea of Kitty Gaku.
Tenn Kujo: …Pfft…
Gaku Yaotome: Tenn, why’re you laughing!?
Riku Nanase: Kitties..! So could it be like a video of Iori going into a cat café?
Iori Izumi: Why do I have to go to a cat café!?
Yamato Nikaido: I’m not too excited about making videos like that, either…
Tamaki Yotsuba: I wanna do a pudding tasting!
Sogo Osaka: …Personally, I’d like to rank my top 100 spices from all around the world…
Nagi Rokuya: And I shall hold a Cocona watch party!
Mitsuki Izumi: You guys aren’t bringing anything new to the table!
Iori Izumi: …Actually, I suppose animal videos do have their appeal, despite how banal they are…
Riku Nanase: Did you say something, Iori?
Iori Izumi: No, nothing.
Momo: Ahaha! Great, you’re already brainstorming ideas!
Momo: You’ve all got the right idea! We wanna see you act natural for your RabbiTubes!
Yuki: Let’s have a fun year doing this.
IDOLiSH7 & TRIGGER: Yessir!

Riku Nanase: We’re going to be RabbiTubers for our birthday project this year..!
Sogo Osaka: All the group chats up until now were fun, so it’s kind of a shame that we won’t be doing one this year.
Mitsuki Izumi: …Fair enough. It’ll be awesome to make videos for our fans, but I wish we could have our own celebrations too!
Yamato Nikaido: It’s become kind of a tradition by now.
Nagi Rokuya: …We do not work together as much as we used to. Though I understand that it is difficult to match all our schedules…
Tamaki Yotsuba: Do we not get to eat Mikki’s cakes this year?
Mitsuki Izumi: The cakes are the one thing we’re gonna make for sure! Right, Iori!?
Iori Izumi: Yes. I’ll help, too.
Riku Nanase: Hmm… Celebrations…
Riku Nanase: Ah! Why don’t we all go somewhere together for our birthdays?
Riku Nanase: I guess we probably can’t all go… But we can get our manager to arrange it so at least some of us can hang out!
Mitsuki Izumi: Going out, huh… That does sound like a nice change of pace from all the group RabbitChats!
Yamato Nikaido: It’s a shame that we won’t all be able to go, but getting to choose a spot does make it feel more special. …You should take me to a beer brewery, by the way.
Mitsuki Izumi: Sounds like you’ve already got one in mind!
Tamaki Yotsuba: Let’s take lots of pics and videos for the guys who can’t go. We can send them over RabbitChat.
Nagi Rokuya: OH! A wonderful idea. It will make us all feel as if we are there.
Iori Izumi: I’m sure uploading them to Rabitter would make many people happy, as well.
Sogo Osaka: That sounds fun..! Let’s ask our manager about it tomorrow.
Riku Nanase: Yep! …Looks like we’re going to have pretty fun birthdays again!
- - - -
Riku Nanase: Wow..! This place is so cute! Where are we!?
Iori Izumi: A glamping area.
Tsumugi Takanashi: Glamping, which is a simpler, more casual form of camping, is very popular nowadays!
Nagi Rokuya: Riku, have you ever gone glamping as a child!?
Riku Nanase: As a child? Um, I don't really remember...
Iori Izumi: Let's enjoy ourselves as though we were still young children.
Nagi Rokuya: We have prepared plenty of meat and fish for the occasion! And sweets, of course...!
Nagi Rokuya: We have a long night ahead of us, Riku!
Iori Izumi: You're allowed to stay up all night, just this once. Right, Manager?
Tsumugi Takanashi: Yes! I'll do everything I can to help you.
Riku Nanase: Thank you..!
Riku Nanase: I can't believe even a killjoy like Iori is going to let me stay up late!
Iori Izumi: As long as you don't make a habit out of it. Today is a special occasion...
Riku Nanase: And thank you for all the food, Nagi! We're going to have a feast tonight!
Nagi Rokuya: YES! A forest party it shall be!
Riku Nanase: Let's get started right away!
Nagi & Iori: Yeah..!
- - - -
Riku Nanase: Hey, Iori. How do I light this coal?
Iori Izumi: Ah, I'll take care of it, you just sit down.
Iori Izumi: I wouldn't want you to inhale the smoke...
Riku Nanase: ...Okay. Sorry for getting in the way.
Riku Nanase: Hey, Nagi. Is there anything I can help you with?
Nagi Rokuya: OH, I am in the midst of a heated battle with the dreaded Onion Demon! My eyes..! Riku, you must flee without me..!
Riku Nanase: O-okay..!
Riku Nanase: ........
Tsumugi Takanashi: Riku-san.
Riku Nanase: Ah, Manager.
Riku Nanase: It looks like all I get to do is sit tight. I was really hoping to do stuff with them, though...
Tsumugi Takanashi: Your cheeks have a bit more color than usual in them. It's probably thanks to how  stable your condition has been lately...
Riku Nanase: Ehehe. Yeah, probably.
Tsumugi Takanashi: ...Let's cook something! It'll be a surprise for Iori-san and Nagi-san!
Riku Nanase: I don't know if I'm allowed...
Tsumugi Takanashi: Of course you are. We came here for you.
Tsumugi Takanashi: Just try not to work yourself too hard, like you've already promised us!
Riku Nanase: ...Yeah. I'll make something they're sure to love!
Riku Nanase: ...Or I'll try, at the very least...
Iori Izumi: Nanase-san? What were you talking about?
Riku Nanase: It's a secret! Iori, we'll have to make dinner, right?
Iori Izumi: Right...
Nagi Rokuya: Wow, will you help prepare our supper, Riku?
Riku Nanase: Ahaha, yep, that was my plan! ...Say, let's have a competition to see which one of us can make the best food!
Iori Izumi: What? Do you seriously think you'll win against me?
Nagi Rokuya: Heh... I would not underestimate the palate I have cultivated over many years, if I were you.
Riku Nanase: Anyway, our time limit will be one hour! ...Ready, get set, start!
- - - -
Riku Nanase: ...Uh... Can I add this in as is..?
Iori Izumi: I'm begging you, please don't add it in there without at least peeling it first..!
Nagi Rokuya: Iori. Should you be looking at other people's dishes? Something smells quite foul on your end...
Iori Izumi: ...Huh? Aah..!
Riku Nanase: ...Hmm? I think I smell something burning... Wait, Iori! Your meat, it's completely scorched!
Iori Izumi: Ugh, I got careless..!
Iori Izumi: ...But Nanase-san, you didn't even cook yours properly before adding it to the sauce!
Iori Izumi: Not to mention, you left your vegetables unpeeled... It was such a trainwreck to watch that I couldn't pay attention to my own cooking!
Riku Nanase: Huh!? So you're saying it's MY fault you burned your meat!? That doesn't make any sense!
Nagi Rokuya: OH, I was hoping to enjoy a relaxing glamping excursion, yet there they are, making a mess once again.
Nagi Rokuya: Their bickering is almost like the soundtrack to my elegant gourmet cooking.
Tsumugi Takanashi: A-ahaha...
- - - -
Riku Nanase: Finished!
Nagi Rokuya: It smells delicious!
Iori Izumi: At least we all managed to put together something. It's time to show the others what we made.
Tsumugi Takanashi: Remember to face the camera!
Riku Nanase: Okay! I made Hamburg steak stew!
Nagi Rokuya: Hamburg steak! How wonderful, Riku!
Riku Nanase: Ehehe. Pretty great, huh? You would know, considering how much you like Hamburg steak!
Iori Izumi: I'll admit that it sounds more complex than what I expected from you.
Riku Nanase: Even I can just throw stuff into a pot and cook it!
Iori Izumi: So not complex at all, then...
Riku Nanase: ...And I used frozen burgers and a ready- made sauce mix.
Nagi Rokuya: Heh, you are outing yourself as quite the lazy cook.
Nagi Rokuya: Iori, what did you make?
Iori Izumi: Beef stroganoff.
Nagi Rokuya: Wow, it looks to be of a much higher quality than a glamping trip would warrant.
Riku Nanase: That seems like a dish Yaotome-san would make, not you!
Iori Izumi: Excuse me..? I only made it because it requires little prep time, and is much simpler to actually prepare than many would think.
Riku Nanase: What did you make, Nagi?
Nagi Rokuya: I made grilled sandwiches with ham, egg, and cheese!
Riku Nanase: Wow, the bread is so nicely browned! It looks good!
Iori Izumi: They're also very well stacked.
Nagi Rokuya: YES! I piled on the ingredients as I grilled the bread. A task so simple, even I could do it.
Riku Nanase: Is it just me, or does glamping make even simple foods look like gourmet!?
Nagi Rokuya: Heh. A fine dinner, is it not?
Riku Nanase: Yeah, it's the best..! Let's eat while it's all still hot!
Iori Izumi: Yes. ...Nanase-san, we won't stay here for very long, so I hope you'll take every chance you can to get some rest and fresh air.
Iori Izumi: We can all come here again at a later date.
Riku Nanase: ...Okay! Thank you so much for setting this all up for me. I don't think I'll ever forget this day!
Iori Izumi: You're being overly dramatic, as usual.
Nagi Rokuya: Iori, Riku! Show your best smiles, we are about to take a picture.
Tsumugi Takanashi: Here I go! Say cheese..!
End of Part 1.

Cats Budapest: Final Thoughts
So, if you couldn’t tell by the rant earlier, I don’t really recommend this production for Fun Reasons.
However, the is amazing as a historical artifact.
Budapest was the first non-replica and the third production ever made. At this point, there were almost no rules. London and Broadway were both still prototypes of what they’d later become and Budapest was built on those prototypes.
The biggest surprise is that they took more inspiration from London than from Broadway. During this first wave of productions, you had more Broadway-based shows than London-based shows. Vienna, the third replica production, though sort of its own thing, is more Broadway than London. Sydney in 1985 was also more Broadway than London, but in a different way. Amsterdam, Paris, and Zurich all took after Vienna and Hamburg took after Sydney. Any other Australian productions were naturally also Sydney-based. These evolved into Australasian tours, so most of Asia was first introduced to a more Broadway-based form of the show. London-based productions, for most of the 20th century, stayed in the UK
Except for Budapest, and to some extent, Japan.
Cats Japan is what I’d most compare Budapest to, though Japan is considering a replica. I’m not sure why, because Japan makes major changes to character design and role, and it has different choreography. Budapest and Japan both began in 1983 and continue in some form to this very day. Whatever I think of them, they clearly must’ve done something right to remain popular for all this time.
Basically, 1981 was London, 1982 was Broadway, and 1983 was three shows that all went in different directions. Vienna was the one the original crew was watching over, so it was the most like previous shows. Budapest and Japan had less of that influence, and they decided to do things their own way. I don’t understand Budapest’s way or Japan’s way, but it’s their own way and it worked.
Japan took influence from both London and Broadway, to some extent. They used the London version of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer until 2018. But, Munkustrap sings Gumbie Cat, something that wasn’t added to the London version until 1996.
But, Budapest seemed to be purely London-based, including elements that were cut from the London production very early on. Though they cut the verse of Gumbie Cat that Broadway first cut, the tap break was original London inspired and Misto sang lead. They used the full version of Old Deuteronomy. They’re not the only production outside of London to do this. Vienna and Zurich both include some of the cut verse, while I think Paris might’ve used all of it. But, all those productions had the number sung by Munk and Tugger. Budapest had Misto and Munk sing it, which was what they were doing when the OLC cast soundtrack was recorded. It was very quickly decided that Munk/Tugger arrangement was better and every production I know of besides Budapest made that shift very early on. The Budapest video is from 2001. They could’ve changed it between 1983 and 2001, but they didn’t. I can’t confirm if they’re still doing it now, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
Budapest has elements closer to what Cats was on its opening night that no other production has and that’s fascinating.
Also, Budapest might actually have created the first Mute Misto. They had two: one that had Misto’s singing lines and one that danced his number. The one that dances doesn’t sing or have any lines. He also has some slightly cryptid vibes that remind me of Vienna Misto, who didn’t exist yet when the show debuted. Vienna Misto’s character design was pretty obviously based on the original Broadway version, so he’s sort of a Broadway Misto, in his way. Budapest, instead of having a London Misto OR a Broadway Misto, decided to use both.
So, I didn’t particularly like Cats Budapest. The cameos were annoying, the character combinations were baffling, Jenny was skinnier than Bombalurina, and on several of the slower numbers, actors kind of went off the beat 2019 Gus style (meaning, an actor who is more focused on acting than singing delivering a musical number in there own way without much regard for the beat. They steal time that they don’t give back. No offense to Sir Ian. He’s a great actor but he really needed a click track. Budapest Gus has the exact same problem.) It might be one of my least favorites so far. But, I’m glad I watched it.

Persona 5
Today, the game Persona 5 Royal comes out. It is the “extended edition” to another game, Persona 5, which was released in 2016. Well, last night I beat Persona 5, and frankly, I think it’s one of my personal favorites of the Playstation 4’s phenomenal catalog of console exclusives.
The best way to describe Persona 5 would be two words: Playable Anime. Centered around a group of Japanese teenagers that discover a realm of human subconscious and choose to manipulate it to right societal wrongs (think inception except if Christopher Nolan had an imagination), it gets as weird as you expect It is unnecessarily horny at points, extremely long, has heavy-handed yet vague themes, and even has not one, but two “beach episodes.” That being said, it also embodies some of best things one can find in anime, too. It has a diverse and fun cast of characters that you easily get attached to, a fascinating plot with jaw dropping twists at every corner, gorgeous and mind-bending visuals, and a catchy and stylish soundtrack. Whenever I got on the DC metro in the past few months, its ‘opening theme’ of sorts would immediately start playing in my head and jumpstart a good mood. To top it off, it even has randomly placed anime segments replacing the occasional cutscenes.
One of this game’s biggest successes that sets it apart from other games is that it actually makes me enjoy turn-based combat. With the exception of Pokemon, I absolutely despise turn-based combat. Turn-based combat is frustratingly slow, completely detracts from immersion (which is something I highly value in games), and allows entire save sessions to be ruined if a single mistake is made. Some can even attest to my hatred of turn-based combat, ranging from roommates experiencing my rage while playing Pokemon to D&D party members noting that I fall asleep during combat sequences. I’m not completely sure how Persona 5 solves these issues, but I suspect has much to do with the ultimate sense of stimulation that the game has to offer. As previously mentioned, Persona 5 has a masterful combination of stylish and unique visuals, ranging from character designs to even font, and an extremely catchy and upbeat soundtrack to spice up what would might otherwise be a chore. Hearing someone loudly sing “YOU’LL NEVER SEE IT COOMMMINNNG” in an elaborate Acid Jazz groove while seeing the screen explode into a word jumble when you select a character to use is the perfect way of making turn-based combat into an utterly bombastic experience.
While half of the game is dedicated towards combat and dungeon crawling as the main cast explores and fights their way through the “metaverse” of human subconsciousness, the other half is dedicated to just living life as an everyday teen in the middle of Tokyo. This originally came off as unnecessary and mundane, but I quickly found a deep joy in these banal tasks similar to how I have in Death Stranding and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Despite its mundane nature, Persona 5 remains a JRPG, and a key function in these segments are making a tough call between a large variety of choices of activities in a few short slots of time. You have to choose between becoming a teacher’s pet, improving your Shogi skills, working at a bar, eating giant hamburgers, and even taking your friends (or potential love interests) out to the local amusement parks, all in the few slots of time you have between the end of school and when your talking cat forces you to go to sleep. However, the highlights of these brilliant slice of life portions are when you develop deep relationships with the game’s wide variety of characters. As the game goes on, you become extremely close with a bunch of random people in the Tokyo metropolitan area, extending from your classmates/teammates to local politicians, shady gun owners, and delinquent video game prodigies, but it’s your choice to determine who you hang out and get close with, with the tightest bonds translating into serious benefits in combat. The extremely stimulating combat sequences contribute to the game’s fun and addictive nature, but on the flipside, the sense of connection one develops with the game’s world and characters developed in these slice of life segments are what really brings you back.
Obviously, no game is perfect. I already detailed some issues I had with the game (mostly story/character related) in my comparison/genre identification at the beginning, but that’s not all. While I have a lot of love for developing relationships with its characters, the scenes where you do so (especially towards the end) really emphasize how much of a Mary Sue the player character is, with no self-awareness in sight. This of course especially feels jarring with its female characters, all of which you have the option to romance (even when they’re muuuch older than you). As previously mentioned, the game is mind-numbingly long, including maybe eight long dungeons known as “palaces” and new character arcs to accompany them. While this wasn’t too much of an issue to me because I could easily rationalize them as different “seasons” that added new status quos to the game which served as one long “show,” this may serve as a turn-off to some players. Those aside, I think my largest issue with Persona 5 would by far be its final boss battles. I believe that nearly 80% of these bosses are what are commonly referred to as “bullet sponges,” aka enemies whose difficulty was not in their attacks or technique, but rather their extremely large health bar and the amount of time it takes to whittle it down. Although the first few bosses and very final enemy actually came off as challenging, rest of the main boss fights in the game felt more like a test of player endurance rather than player skill, which made an otherwise impressive combat repertoire fall flat.
Persona 5 is the freshest breath of air possible to an otherwise exhausted JRPG formula. It’s anime-esque style makes it impressively engaging and complements a compelling plot that mirrors the “high school slice of life interrupted by crazy supernatural or sci-fi nonsense” archetype of some of my favorite anime (Mob Psycho 100, Diamond is Unbreakable, Kill La Kill). Because there are few video games that make me want to get down and dance on the DC subway, Persona 5 is an experience I’ll never forget. Once the social distancing and quarantines end, and I implore you to Wake up, Get up, Get out there and buy it or its recently released expanded edition. I give it a 9.5/10 stars.

S01E01: “Smoke”: Stop! Sit! And Think
The first shot in the first episode of The Littlest Hobo is a furious wall of flames. The orange inferno is frighteningly close to the viewer, and it roars on the soundtrack. The forest is combusting into smoke. “Smoke” is in fact the title of the episode, as we’ve already learnt. The engulfed, beyond-helping trees tremble and groan and keel over. This is intercut with a tracking shot of men digging a ditch to contain the flames. Curiously, young saplings can be seen in these shots, perilously close to the desperately plunging shovel spades. Is this the future of the forest they’re fighting for? Or are these vulnerable young trees in the shovels’ way a counterpoint to the angry, towering fire the men are fixated on: the unnoticed fragility of the seemingly-indomitable Nature they're sweatily straining to delimit? We know of course that fires are good for young trees’ growth. It might be crucial to “Smoke” that we're never told whether the forest fire that resonates throughout the episode was started by people, or by purely natural forces. Or maybe it doesn’t matter at all. “Nature is a myth,” Steven J. Gould said. It's fitting how a show that interrogates the liminal space between human and not-human would begin with an episode about the combustible struggle to live with, and apart from, Nature.
Tumblr media
Of course, the fire isn’t exactly the first thing we see, as it comes after the intro titles. “Maybe Tomorrow,” the iconic theme song that kicks everything off, is now what most people retain about the show. (But what is the voice that keeps on calling him? We will discuss the theme song, and how it might help us understand the show’s central questions, in a future post). The Littlest Hobo is a Canadian TV series that aired on CTV from October 11, 1979, to March 7, 1985. It was a revival or remake of an earlier series of 1963-1965, which was itself based on a 1958 American feature film. What makes TLH stand out from other Hero Dog stories like Lassie and Rin Tin Tin is the concept of a an “ownerless dog,” as well as (in the newer series under discussion) more adult subject matter, free of pandering or cloying material. The connecting tissue that joins the different Hobo iterations together is the clever dogs trained by the fascinating Charles “Chuck” P. Eisenmann.
The opening credits of TLH announce the series as “Starring London,” a reference to the dog actor from the original ’58 Hobo film. In fact, multiple dogs were used (older dogs for serious acting, younger dogs for athletic stunts). But they were all trained by Chuck Eisenmann, trainer of the original London, and they were all “reverse-mask” German Shepherds who, at least in many cases, could trace their lineage back to Chuck’s original star pupil. Eisenmann’s peculiar training methods involved entirely verbal directions, and he believed his dogs could understand spoken instructions about as well as an eight-year-old human. He taught his dogs English, German, and French. Some of his eccentric training books include “A Dog’s Day in Court,” which imagines training from the dog’s perspective, and “Stop! Sit! And Think.”
“Smoke” is the name that our human hero this episode, Ray, a park ranger played by Monte Markham, gives to the dog he encounters. This is because, “that’s how he appeared, in a puff of smoke.” In his very first appearance in the series, the otherwise-nameless Hobo is immediately associated with the forest's combustion, with the billowing outcome of the conflicted border between men and wild. This fiery spectacle, the ranger’s dialogue makes clear, has seemingly produced this figure, somehow caused him to “appear,” as if burst out of the burning soil the way Ancient Greeks once thought worms and mice could be spontaneously produced by the interaction of the elements.
It’s worth pointing out, as a parenthetical, that the name “Smoke” will not stick beyond this episode, nor will any other name. Like the hero in a spaghetti Western, The Hobo will bear many nicknames, but will never have a “true” name. Which is interesting in the context of our relationship with dogs. For people (especially children) naming a dog is essential to the process of binding the dog to us, becoming its owner. Hacking (easily) into the dog’s innate (because it was bred that way) need to rely on one person or small group of people to satisfy its servile impulses to cultivate endless love, and a sense of meaning in the defense of, and identification with, this “master,” having the dog answer to a name we have chosen is the beginning of the dog’s identity as our property, and the end of its free life as its own independent creature. It’s a process not without cruelty, and maybe totally built of cruelty, and this is something that should be discussed more in relation to other episodes. But it’s important to highlight here that The Hobo, the “ownerless dog,” has no “slave name” that would bind him to a master. In dog terms, he is radically free.
This burning forest manifests no divine voice, but rather a voiceless dog carrying, in its mouth, a young cougar cub. Then another cougar cub. The dog, now named “Smoke,” has presented the cubs to Ray. Perhaps to see his work through, Smoke accompanies Ray back to his station. A bond has been instantly formed between the resolutely good human, and the benevolent Smoke, who, as an obviously domesticated animal, straddles the line between the world of humans and that of natural forces.
We meet the villain of the piece, Cal Rooker, a provisioner who is selling animal traps and rat poison to the citizens of this small town (a town which may be located within a national park, or just otherwise deep in the woods). It seems that the fire has sent the confused and newly-homeless creatures of the forest wandering into town. Rooker has been preying on the paranoia of the townsfolks who are afraid these wild animals will endanger their household pets, their livestock, or even their children. He‘s making a brisk sale in death.
What is nature to these hale Canadians who live among it? Probably different things at different times, but when its active participants inch into their ordered sense of humanity, it becomes something they mistrust and fear. A mouse is cute in a photograph, but when you see one scurrying across your hardwood floor, unreally fast and with beady eyes betraying a life lived in constant, horrible stress... the thing is loathsome and ruins your sleep. The solid walls of our homes, made of straight lines unlike anything in the wild, reveal themselves as our defenses at these times, defenses psychological as much as physical, built upon thousands of generations of separating our conception of Us from our surroundings.
Rooker’s profiteering begins to bend sinister in a couple of ways. First, we see a cougar with its leg caught in a trap. The ranger instantly surmises, while saving the frightened beast, that it must be the mother of the two cubs Smoke rescued from the flames.
But the cat in the trap was merely a prelude to the true crisis. Dastardly Rooker has chosen to bait his own store, placing raw hamburger laced with rat poison in a dog bowl outside his door. Will it be Smoke who ingests the deadly meal? We’re teased with the possibility, but no. A small child toddles into frame and pokes some tainted beef in his unsuspecting mealy maw.
Every attempt to attack Nature ends up as an attack on ourselves. As our planet shows us, in a thousand tragic ways, we have been pathetically unable to control our effects on this world we would tame. And as the globe becomes poisoned, we’ve been forced to confront the fact that we are still living on it, still among the brambles and beasts, we remain inseparable from Nature, and we have poisoned ourselves. The death Rooker dealt has come for a human child.
Or has it? While there’s no antidote in town, and the bridge to the hospital has naturally been burned down, there might just be a solution. Ray takes off in a small aircraft, with Smoke at his side, to retrieve the nearest doctor with the antidote. A storm lays in, perhaps provoked by the smoke’s effect on the sky. “Of all the rotten luck,” Ray snarls. With the airstrip invisible, Ray asks the doctor if he can fly the plane while he (Ray) parachutes into town. No luck; the useless doctor has never flown. Ray decides he has no choice but to entrust Smoke with parachuting down, with the antidote tied to the dog’s throat. But he doesn’t seem worried, as he can sense the abnormally intelligent creature’s confidence and capability, while strapping him into the parachute.
Maybe the only thing wrong with having The Hobo parachute out of an airplane in the opening episode, is that you wonder how future episodes could possibly top it. It’s pretty fucking cool. You also wonder how Hobo pulled the cord, but presumably he managed to do it with his mouth.
Smoke doesn’t fail, the child is saved, and Rooker repents. The cougar cubs are in good health. Ray proposes marriage to his girlfriend.
As Smoke wanders off, our hero’s motives and thoughts remain inscrutable. It will be our task for the rest of the series to try and decipher this radically free (or is he?) non-human's intentions and desires. The Hobo wanders back into the woods among the beasts, but we must suspect that the voice that is always calling him speaks in a human tongue. Until tomorrow.

Yet another addition to my CATS vinyl collection is the Complete Original Hamburg Cast Recording (CATS - Live Aus Dem Hamburger Operettenhaus) from 1986.
I know some people do not enjoy this soundtrack as much as others, due to the audience noises. However, it is classified as a live album, so I do not necessarily view it any differently than a concert from any band.
The live aspect gives the recording some noticable differences compared to other casts. The instruments sound as though they are recorded live, especially the drums. The ending of the Jellicle Ball, which is twelve and half minutes here, is where I think this is most notable, very pounding at this point.
As with the other CATS cast recordings, the gatefold of the release has many wonderful pictures of the Original Hamburg Cast.
My release does come not with the printed inner sleeves, so I have to purchase another copy in hopes of obtaining them. It is very frustrating when sellers do not mention this in their listings!
Interestingly, Fred Butter, who plays Rum Tum Tugger, is also on another cast recording I will post tomorrow.

Meine Plattenfirma Pulsar Records sitzt in Texas. Was in meinem Leben passiert, spiegelt sich in meinen Liedern wieder. • Hörst Sie noch Vinyl? Was Denken Sie über das Comback des Vinyls? Nein, ich höre keine Vinylplatten. Ein volles Comeback würde mich aber freuen, schon wegen der Grösse der Cover Artwork. • Was denken Sie über Musik Streaming?

Unleash Your Persona!
By: KL Tiago
Persona 5, the JRPG from Atlus, is one of the best games of this year as well as all time.  In my opinion.  But also it’s true.
The characters are thought out and interesting. The story is deep and engaging. The gameplay is fun and strategic. The soundtrack is out of this world. It's overall just an amazing piece of work.
One of the best things about this game, beyond the aforementioned points, is its visuals.  Persona 5 bleeds aesthetic.  The anime-style comes through in the character design, the musical choices, the fonts; everything.  It's all very uniquely Persona and all very amazing.
What I want to dissect specifically, is the fashion. The costume design of this game is top-notch.  Character outfits are fashionable, stylish, funky, and on-trend. I'm going to go one by one through the Phantom Thieves’ battle costumes to discuss what a fabulous job this game did with its aesthetics and their fashion choices.
First up, the main protagonist Akira Kurusu aka Joker.  Black trench coat with an oversized turned up collar?  Yas.  Boots with the hint of a heel and slightly curled toe?  Yas.  Fit-ted vest to snatch that motherfucking waist to Hades?  Yas, bitch.  A secretive, white, pointy mask to hide all of the Joker’s got-damn secrets? Yas.  Red accent gloves?  You betta believe it!  Akira is serving some midnight-warrior-Protagonist-realness and will lead you straight to fashion nirvana.
Ryuji Sakamoto, your first friend, goes by Skull. Henny is giving you knee pads for safety and fun.  Pants tight like the bonds of friendship, complete with anime-trope-doubled-up, X-crossed belts.  Yes they’re functional too, miss-miss.  Where else would Skull hold his shotgun shells?  Fashion and function, yes, ma’am.  Did I mention the yellow gloves and thin red scarf to maximize the accessorize?  I did now.
Who’s that blonde in the drastically-impractical zip-up, red leather body suit?  Miss Panther: Ann Takamaki.  It is what?  Glued to her body.  She is where?  Covered head to toe except for a very-practical boob-window. Mmm-hmm.  Do those thigh-high boots zip up?  NO MA’AM: they are pulled high as Heaven brought up by the Lordt.  And don’t think for one motherfucking minute Ann left her accessories at home.  Her purr-fect primadonna mask faces some feline features and her hot pink gloves are giving Barbie, Kirby and Kimberly Ann Hart respiratory problems.  She is painting the town red with her colour-palette, honey.  Live.
Yusuke Kitagawa, the stone-cold Fox with a mask of a Kitsune. HUH-KNEE.  Yu-su-ke-is-snatched-like-but-ter-he-is-run-ning-with-this-look-to-the-run-way.  That collar is up to HERE, honey.  His outfit is fitting like his ice-blue gloves–like butter!–creamy, silky, smooth. Sleek, is his look.  But wait!  Flounce, darling!  Flounce!  Are those sleeves puffed like a pastry?  Mama, yas!  Are those knee-high boots white like a wedding dress?  Bitch-is-PURE.  What’s that striped blue and white sash hiding, Yusuke?  Mr. Kitagawa, is that a fluffy tail, you furry trash?  MA-MA, YAS!
Next up is queen, kween and also codenamed Queen: Makoto Nijima.  Her outfit is black as?  Night.  Her corset-inspired leather is? Dangerous.  Those spiky shoulders are giving me Balmain in a war-zone, honey.   She is a steel-toed, iron-masked, deadly-fisted honor-student from the right-side of the tracks and she will rip out that throat and help you study arithmetic, honey.  She is a whom?  Multitasker.  Ask Miss Makoto if you can borrow her lengthy, flowing, beautiful black sash to hang yourself with because her look will leave you deceased.
Sakura-comma-Futaba.  Baby-girl better get herself out of her socially-anxious closet because the world needs to see her LOOK.  Little lady isn’t called Oracle for nothing honey.  Those cute, bug-eyed, red goggles of hers can see into your soul, can see into your mind, can see into the future, Miss-Honey.  Which is where she pulled this Tron-gone-fashion aesthetique.  Those neon green lines are pulsing over that slight frame, Futaba.  Those popping green fingers, heels and toes are hacking into fashion, Futaba.  You may not know how to hold a normal conversation, Futaba, but honey can hold an outfit.
The Heiress of a hamburger fortune, lemme take a bite out of Haru Okumura: M’ilady of the dark, mademoiselle Noir.   Let’s start from the top, shall we. Bitch-that-feath-thered-hat-is-give-ing-me-ev-ry-thing.  It’s cute.  It’s Shakespeare.  It’s delicious.  Lady Okumura, where did you get that lilac pink blouse because I need it.  I need that adorable vest to make it an ensemble, and the lil’ silk tie to circle dat throat.  Mm-kay?  Call Ryuji, his shotgun shell belt just became last season.  Haru is holding.  Grenades that is.  Which she launches, honey, like she launches us into fashion celestiality with those poofy short-shorts, black leggings and good-girl loafers.  Haru may be armed with an axe, but she’ll behead me with her own two hands in those hot-purple leather gloves, ma’am!
Is the dissection over?  NO MA’AM!  It is NOT! No team of heart-stealing fashion-bandits is complete without animal aid!  Meowing Morgana pulls up to the curb in them-got-damn-self because Miss-Codename: Mona can transform into a bus. Yes queen!  This feline accessorizes with a 2.3L turbo-4 engine and 300 horesepower!  Handy and fashion: because that bus has ears.  For what?  To hear the haters coming and drive the fuck away, Miss-Miss!  Morgana is serving adorable-counterpart-reality with a cute yellow handkerchief collaring that cute, kitty-cat neck.
The Phantom Thieves are what?  Sickening.  They have stolen what?  Your heart.  Why?  Because: fashion.
If you still doubt me in terms of the incredibleness of Persona 5, I can’t help you.  Honestly, seeing them should have been enough to make you place an Amazon order or get your ass down to a GameStop.  Love yourself: play Persona 5.  Or do one better: dress like Persona 5.
Turn up that collar.  Accessorize with too many belts.  Feather that hat, honey.  Make yourself into the person you wish you’d be with all the craze and fabulous you deserve. Unleash your Persona!  Unleash fashion!
Persona 5 is available for PlayStation 4.
