Here are all of my official Cats (2019) movie posters from my Cats merchandise and related items collection. These do not include the three signed photo prints that I own, as although they are based on the movie posters, they are not from the studio. Ten of the twelve posters I own are in unused, never displayed condition.

I will be referring to them by what I call the three different versions (Theatre Door, Blue, Victoria’s Pearls), as I do not know which is the A, B, or C versions in movie poster reference.

Pictured are:

  • The Australian 27" x 40" ‘Theatre Door’ version, which is the only one I have framed thus far, as it was in used condition when acquired. This has the opening release day as Boxing Day instead of Christmas or December 20th.
  • The movie 5" x 25" movie mylar, which I love! I believe it was only made in this 'Theatre Door’ version. Unrolled to show.
  • The 4’ x 6’ French 'large’ version. This is the standard 'Blue’ version found for most Cats (2019) images. This happens to be my least favourite version, as I do not feel the blue matches with the rest of the movie. It has most of the characters, likely hence the reason it is so widely used. Unfolded once to show.
  • The 17" x 22" French 'small’ 'Blue’ version. Unfolded to show.
  • The two versions of the 7" x 10" Japanese Chirashi posters. One with the 'Blue’ version, with the 'Theatre Door’ back; and the other with a black logo front, and the 'Theatre Door’ back, both unused.

Then there is the picture with the six remainders, which are rolled up, but contain two of my favourites. These are strictly in storage until I find a way to display them, as I do not want to damage them. Five of the six posters are in pristine condition, but are difficult to unroll alone, especially the bus shelter ones, which are as tall as me! They are:

  • The 4’ x 6’ bus shelter poster of my favourite version, which is not shown (but you can easily look it up), the 'Victoria’s Pearls’ version. This was the version I saw when I went to see the movie the first time in theatres. I remember staring at it in the lightbox absolutely enamored with it after finishing the movie! Thus began my drive to collect Cats merchandise! My favourite poster I own, and one of the jewels of my collection!
  • The 4’ x 6’ bus shelter poster with the 'Beautiful Ghosts’ cover (mockup pictured above as the last image), which was only used for this poster I believe. I love this one too!
  • Three 27" x 40" versions of the North American posters, the 'Blue’, 'Theatre Door’, and the 'Victoria’s Pearls’. All in perfect condition!
  • Last, but not least, the 30" x 40" UK 'quad’ 'Blue’ version, which is horizontally presented, as opposed to vertically like the others. The only other poster I own that was used.

I want to buy proper lightboxes for home use, but any local manufacturers are seemingly not in business anyone (no one ever answers my inquiries ANYWHERE), and to buy in the US and ship to Canada is bordering on prohibitively expensive. Not to mention that I need so many, and that the bus shelter ones are huge, meaning they would need to be custom made! One day they will be properly displayed, but I do not have the money, or realistically the space, to accommodate that! I still hope a signed movie poster with at least the named characters pops up for sale one day, because I NEED to own one!

during my research today I found out that Cats (2019) was shot on the same sound stage as the first seven Harry Potter movies and The Phantom Menace and I don’t know what to do with this information

Here are some more signed items from my Cats merchandise and related items collection. I have shown some signed items before, like that wonderful poster signed by seven cast members of Cats (2019).

Three are signed 8 x 10 photos from Cats (2019) cast members. The first signed by Laurie Davidson as Mistoffelees, the second signed by Jennifer Hudson as Grizabella, and the third signed by Rebel Wilson as Jennyanydots (my second autograph from her).

Thrown in for good measure is a signed card from Michael Gruber as Munkustrap (my third autograph from him).

I, of course, am still looking for an item signed by everyone in Cats (2019). A dream I have.

Hmmm, I wonder if I may have more signed things on the way? Why yes I do.

These are either from the character descriptions from Universal, or quotes from the character’s actor/actress. I’ve bolded the things I find particularly interesting!

  • Victoria: “the youngest of the cats” | “kind and empathetic, she also has an inner fire and strength” | “though abandoned, Victoria is not a victim. She needs help but she is not helpless. She has a kind heart and an inner strength.”

  • Old Deuteronomy: “strong, wise” “the oldest cat who rules over all the other cats”

  • Macavity: “He only has one of his nine lives left” | “compelling, charismatic, and deeply dangerous” “He’s a trickster. He’s charming one minute and then horribly desperate and insecure the next. He sticks his nose into almost everything.”

  • Grizabella: “isolated and alone, but she possesses an inner grace and strength” | “She was once the cat that brought all of the cats together in happiness and celebration” | “Grizabella has become completely scarred and doesn’t feel like she can trust anyone”

  • Munkustrap: “the leader of the Jellicle cats and the heir apparent to Old Deuteronomy” | “protects the younger cats and guides Victoria” | “dignified and energetic” | “the MC of the Jellicle Ball” | “He loves watching his fellow felines shine in their own way, and they respect him for that.” | “an old soul” | “sees the special qualities and potential in Victoria and does his best to protect her from danger”

  • Mr. Mistoffelees: “a magician-in-training who is still discovering his own powers” | “popular with the other cats” “has a softer energy than the other cats” | “spellbound by Victoria and sees an innocence in her that he sees in himself” | “clumsy and shy” | “[his magic tricks] often go wrong because he gets distracted or embarrassed” | “always by Victoria’s side and the one who she seeks comfort from”“he doesn’t have a lot of confidence in himself”

  • Rum Tum Tugger: “a handsome and charismatic cat who is adored by the younger female cats” | “a popular member of the Jellicle tribe and likes to party” | “always going from one extreme to the next and can never make up his mind, which also makes him endearing” | “He can’t commit to any decisions, which unfortunately keeps him from experiencing the joys in life”

  • Cassandra: “an outspoken member of the Jellicle tribe and defends the tribe, first and foremost” | “a strength and a voice that demands attention” | “questions the others and pushes their buttons” | “she wants success for everyone, but sometimes she puts up a front to mask her emotions. Victoria’s arrival helps Cassandra realize that it’s okay to be a little bit vulnerable”

  • Bombalurina: “Macavity’s powerful and beautiful partner in crime.” | “full of personality and attitude” | “the leader of Macavity’s gang” | “loves to be the center of attention and makes a grand entrance into any room she steps”

  • Alonzo: “a standoffish cat who watches others from afar” | “a protector of his clan” | “He’s had some tough times but has found his home amongst the Jellicle tribe and has a lot of love for them”

  • Skimbleshanks: “energetic” | “cheerful and playful” | “protective of the younger kittens, watching out for them and shielding them from danger”

  • Jennyanydots: “dreams of a life in show business” | “a frustrated choreographer who has bigger dreams than being contained to the kitchen”

  • Bustopher Jones: “a dandy, an impeccably groomed cat with a taste for the finer things in life” | “always looking for a good time” | “very light on his feet and has a real finesse about him”

  • Gus: “frail and hard of hearing” | “deeply admired by the other cats”

  • Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer: “mischievous, naughty” | “cheeky” | “devious nature”

I got my Cats 2019 press kit in the mail today! There’s about 70 pages of written content to go through, but I’ll be posting tidbits and excerpts periodically! There’s some good info in here on the cast’s views on their characters and their experiences working on the film as well as some making-of production info and background on the creative choices, like the setting, costumes, choreo, etc.

Very excited to read through all of this!

Snaps to Cats 2019 costume designer Paco Delgado

He realized that Misto is iconic for his light-up jacket and general sparkliness but also knew that those things would be super distracting for a character that was now going to be present throughout the entire film and would also look odd in a movie much more rooted in realistic visuals than the stage show (you know, as much as a movie about cat people can be)

The ‘pearly king’ idea for Misto’s jacket was an absolutely brilliant way to call back to his stage costume while also not being too outlandish or distracting or out-of-place with the “””realistic””” visuals. The pearly buttons are shiny but not too shiny and they also doubly are representative of the points of light scattered across Misto’s stage show jacket as the buttons catch the surrounding light

AND it has the added bonus of contributing to the solidity of the film’s setting in London (it specifically takes place in Soho), as pearly kings and queens are very much a London thing

Like… I will never get over how smart that idea was, a tip of the hat to you, Mr. Delgado

Carrying with my daily posts of my Cats merchandise and releated items collection, here are two promotional CD singles for Beautiful Ghosts performed by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift), with a promotional sheet for the Best Original Song nomination. Both CDs are Brazilian versions of the promo CD, and I am very sure one of the them, the shiny faced one, is unofficial and fake. Oh well, it did not cost much.

I regret EVERYDAY that when I was first buying promotional items related to Cats (2019) earlier this year, I did not buy a bundle of the US version of the promo CD along with SIGNED by Taylor Swift sheet music for the song, and a promotional sheet very much like the one above (it might be the same, but I am not sure). I balked at the price, it sold out, and have been kicking myself ever since!

I think Beautiful Ghosts is really beautiful song, and disagree with most assessments that it does not belong or fit in with the rest of the songs in Cats, at least within the realm of the movie. Francesca Hayward’s vocal performance of this song is STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL and captures the sad essence of being abandoned, finding a better home and family, but being apprehensive about your future and whether you will be let down again. I prefer it to Taylor’s version, and think Francesca’s voice always adds to any song she is featured in, whether primarily or in a chorus type role.

I have admittedly become a Taylor Swift fan because of the movie. Her music was not really something I would generally listen to, as I do not listen to Pop, Country, or Top 40 music. Slighty related, Cats (2019) also made me appreciate Jason Derulo, but I have not sought out his music, and probably never will. However, because of her brief performance in the movie, doing, in my opinion, a wonderful job with Macavity (yes I know it is drastically different than the other versions, but I love it, and is one of my favourite songs in the soundtrack), as Bombalurina in general (she has the character’s sultry, sensual spirit down), and in addition to her version of Beautiful Ghosts that plays during the end credits (stunning to hear in a COMPLETELY EMPTY theatre after my ever first experience with Cats, that second verse echoes off the walls!), I have become a covert. Not to mention that Taylor is a cat obsessed person like myself, and if I ever met her I would probably talk to her about her cats, and about Cats (2019). Yes, I am maybe strange. She wore cats socks during the rehearsals for Cats (2019)! She is cat crazy just like me! She also is such an inspirational figure in the music industry.

When Taylor announced her new album, folklore, back towards the end of July, I read the description of what the album was to sound like according to her, and I remembered back to me in that empty theatre, nearly at the end of a life changing experience witnessing the magic of Cats the very first time, and immediately purchased all eight of the vinyl versions of the new album, without hearing a single second of it. I bought the singles on vinyl as well. Sounds a bit insane does it not? Well, folklore has become my favourite album that has come out this year, and it is a beautiful album, different than what I expecting! Awash in emotion throughout, and touches of reverb and strings, I recommend giving it a listen. It will likely be my favourite album that will come out in all of 2020, which is something I would have never said at this time last year before discovering Cats!

Oh look! More Cats soundtracks from my collection of Cats merchandise and related items. These are all 2CDs except of course the Highlights soundtrack from the 2019 movie. All were purchased new and sealed.

I currently own most of the complete recordings made for Cats. I think I am only missing the French Cast and the 1983 Japan Cast Complete recordings, but I may be incorrect. I have not started purchasing Highlights soundtracks for the shows without Complete recordings made, but I am heading towards that (looking at you Vienna recording).

Pictured are:

  • Cats Highlights From The Motion Picture Soundtrack
  • Cats Complete Original London Cast Recording
  • Cats Complete Original Broadway Cast Recording
  • Cats Complete Australian 1985 Cast Recording
  • Cats Japan/Shiki Cats 2019 Cast Complete Soundtrack (Special Memorial Edition)
  • Cats Japan/Shiki Cats 1989 Cast Complete Soundtrack
  • Cats Complete Hamburg 1986 Cast Soundtrack

As I said in my previous post with the soundtracks in vinyl format, the music of Cats is the important aspect of the show for me, and it is always fun to listen to a soundtrack you have not heard before.

I know that the 2019 movie is not everyone’s cup of morning tea, but it contains some of favourite versions of the songs, and you cannot fault the brilliant orchestrations found throughout. I LOVE the version of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer found on here! It is my favourite song from the 2019 movie and my favourite version of the song. Even if you have seen the movie, and felt that the songs were lacking, listen to the Highlights soundtrack! It incorporates some additional instrumentations in some songs, and slightly extends others. It brings the vocals and instruments to the front of the mix and is a bit of a different experience than hearing the songs within the movie. I have to mention that Robbie Fairchild’s (as Munkustrap) vocals are IMMACULATE, and I LOVE Francesca Hayward’s vocals and her version of Beautiful Ghosts! The version of Memory on here is (in my opinion) so much better and more powerful than the live singing version in the movie. Skimbleshanks is a tour de force, as you may have heard. I have listened to this Highlights soundtracks probably over 50 times waiting for the movie to be released physically on BluRay/DVD, because I needed my Cats fix (admittedly in secret).

I also very highly recommend listening to the Australian Cast Recording if you have not! The soundtrack places a bit more prominence on brass instruments, especially saxophone. It is very fun! It is also the only Cast Recording sung in English that includes The Pekes and The Pollicles. I really enjoy the version of Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats on here, as it adds an interesting rolling drum line through parts of the song.

I am always on the lookout for more Cats soundtracks to add to my collection!

My last post for celebrating fandom artists who create and make Cats related items and merchandise are these lovely, glittery acrylic charms, made by @snowhite-dahlia and @the-bunny-wife.

I love the background set for Cats (2019), so these are right up my alley, pun intended. I think there is a lot of context and story to be found in the majestic, hand build set of the movie, and I think that it is best represented with the ‘WAKE UP AND DREAM’ sign in the junkyard, and presented in my favourite of the three charms.

I love the Bombalurina on the moon prop charm, with the gold chain accents. That is attention to detail I love to see, spreading the gold catnip around in her descent!

And, of course, the Milkbar backing wall charm is just as nice (and sparkly) as the other two!

I someday dream of owning a piece of the set or a prop in some capacity from Cats (2019). Maybe I will lucky enough to purchase one.

I would recommend these to any fan of the movie! Celebrate that brilliant set!

Continuing on with my posts praising the fandom artists, here is another, in my opinion, essential, piece of my Cats merchandise and related items collection. Do not worry, I will get to my official Cats merchandise collection soon enough.

The Cursed Cats Zine (@cursedcatszine) orchestrated by @littledozerdraws and @Kabujiro (on Instagram) as a charity zine for COVID-19, is absolutely wonderful. I purchased both the physical zine and the deluxe digital zine with additional artwork. The physical zine also came with three postcards and a bunch of art cutouts as merch. I should note that the physical zine is no longer available, but the two digital editions can still be purchased.

This was my first indication that there was some form of a Cats fandom that existed. I still have no idea how I came across it, but I very glad I did, because the physical and deluxe digital zines are full of AMAZING artwork!

It contains one of my favourite, if not my most favourite, art piece for Cats, drawn by @momane25. I love their Cats art, and I would highly recommend you follow them.

The zine also contains fantastic pieces from 31 other artists, such as @quinnecl (look at that adorable, wide-eyed Victoria!), @stripedpants (on Instagram), and @lexierueve (on Instagram). The merch was made by 10 different artists. If anyone wants a detailed list of credits, just let me know.

I cannot recommend this zine enough! Buy this and support some charities!
