MELANIE KING ENTHUSIASTS LISTEN TO ME.
There were no bodies to find. Her father’s body was never found. There was just charred remains and bones that probably couldn’t be distinguished from each other.
What if Melanie never truly accepted her dad was dead until Elias Made Her?
Melanie, who watches so many horror movies and probably lives by the “No body? Not dead.” Rule when it comes to movies, how easily would that mindset have slipped into her reality? When everyone told her “He’s dead, it wasn’t your fault, smoke inhalation, he didn’t suffer,” did she ever allow herself to hear it? Had she ever even allowed herself to really think about it? Her father was all she had, she was all he had, and everyone told her that he was dead when there was no body found, the place just burned down. Who were they to know he wasn’t still alive, still out there, just lost without his memories and confused and wandering the streets somewhere? Did all that anger at being “ignored, passed over” maybe come from her trying to file a missing person’s report, and it never being seriously looked into? If Melanie had been written off as an irrational, grieving girl in denial? Or even if it had been looked into, how long before the police gave up on trying to find him, because they think they have bigger things to deal with, when to Melanie he was the last person she had? Was Melanie still looking for him? Even if she wasn’t, even if she wouldn’t admit it, was a part of her still holding out hope? Was that what Elias thought she had to lose when she told him she had nothing to lose?
And now, she knows, she KNOWS in a way she can’t refute anymore, that he’s gone. The hope is gone. But again, she’s just left with that dull, aching rage. Because they WERE wrong. It was WORSE than they thought and still, no one will ever know, because if she told anyone what she was forced to Know by Elias, she would, again, be written off as irrational. Troubled.
Again.
She holds onto that anger. It’s kept her going so far, right?
I JUST FEEL LIKE THIS EXPLAINS SO MUCH.

My media this week (20-26 Aug 2023)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my absolute fave line in all of heartstopper, so glad they left it unaltered
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😍 how a resurrection really feels (LiarsandThieves22) - 176K, steddie - post s4 fixit with a timeline merge - just brilliantly executed, lots of great emotional moments as well as even more laugh out loud ones. Big, big rec.
🙂 The Wedding Bait (Golden Years #1) (Adele Buck, author & narrator) - novella; cishet romance but MCs in their 50s, which was a nice change
😊 Murder at the Village Fair (Miss Underhay Mysteries #13) (Helena Dixon, author; Karen Cass, narrator) - Matt & Kitty are on a sort-of delayed honeymoon & get involved in murder in Yorkshire while visiting his aunt
😊 here there be dragons (theundiagnosable) - 66K, original hockey fic - epitome of sunshine/grumpy - POV char has extreme anxiety/anxiety-induced paranoia/anger outbursts due to fear etc - he gets better & it does end very happily but first we gotta watch him train wreck everything & suffer (to be clear, I did enjoy reading this! but it's a lot!)
🥰 Lemon Meringue Lies (Nejinee) - 111K, technically stucky modern no-powers AU but honestly such an AU that it's really more of original fic WHICH ISN'T at all bad - best friends to lovers, lots of oblivousness, pining, angst, emotional dumbassery but also a really great external setting & compelling supporting characters (who just all happen to have names/physical traits as MCU characters) [reread]
😍 if I'm gonna get back to you someday (napricot) - 46K, post Endgame fixit with "a clusterfuck of Steves" from different multiverses [reread for stucky bookclub]
😍 Golden Handcuffs (seekwill) - 70K, Good Omens human AU where they're both professors at a small Scottish university - brilliant fic, great characterizations, solid story development, absolutely loved it
💖💖 +246K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Mandatory Fun (One-EyedBossman (desert000rose), SecretFandomStories) - MCU: stucky, 39K - Part 11 of Differently Okay Local Idiots; Bucky & Steve go suit shopping with Natasha & together navigate another bump in their road
To the Waters and the Wild (rainbow_nerds) - MCU: magical shrunkyclunks, 23K - selkie!Bucky finds Captain America frozen when he's 10 years old, but no one believes him; ~15 years later, Cap finally thaws out
To Kiss the Tender Inward of Thy Hand (circ_bamboo) - Band Sinister (KJ Charles): Ned Caulfield/George Penn, 32K - beautiful backstory of how Ned & George met

The Magnus Archives and Gundam 0079 crossover because it's been eating my brain
okay so this is mostly what of the 14 fears the cast of the original gundam would be connected to because we've put too much thought into this to not write it down somewhere (skipping over getting marked by the slaughter because that's the fear of war so like,,, duh)
Amuro: just narrowly avoids becoming an Avatar of the Lonely, like just barely, like he gets stuck in the Lonely and someone has to find him and get him out type just barely. He's pretty isolated throughout the show tbh so he'd be pretty easy pickings, but at the very end he's like "no I have friends fuck you" Martin style
Char: my first thought was avatar of the slaughter but then I thought about it for like .2 seconds longer and this guy is an Avatar of the Desolation through and through, especially with the themes of revenge with some of that fears avatars. The guys plan is to systematically kill the entire family of the guy who wronged him like, c'mon. Could also have a fun bastardization arc of "well your revenge is complete, you have still sold your soul to an eldritch manifestation of humanities fear"
Kai: i feel like he'd just somehow manage to avoid all the eldritch fear bullshit by just going "I am not looking, I do not see it". Maybe later in life he could become an Eye Avatar with the whole journalism thing, but in the original show anytime some fear bullshit goes down he just walks the other direction
Sayla: I feel like she also wouldn't manage to get avatarized, but like in a Gerry Keay way, like she's been embroiled in this shit for awhile and she's going around making sure people don't get killed by the fears and destroying dangerous artifacts
Hayato: okay we said we wouldn't mention Slaughter marks, but I'll make an exception here because he gets very very close to becoming an Avatar of it, Melanie King style. Like he's upset/angry that he can't keep up with Amuro and the Slaughter uses that as a jumping off point to get into his psyche. I don't think he actually becomes an avatar but there's a point where he very easily could
Mirai: part of me really wants to make her an Avatar of the Vast for no reason other than she can fly a spaceship and the Vast is one of our favorite fears. Tbh we honestly can't think of anything else for her
Frau Bow: the corruption tries to get it's hooks worms in her and she just puts it in a jar and moves on with her life Joshua Gillespie style.
Bright Noa: okay so he's actually really difficult, in an AU where they're in the Magnus Archives he definitely takes Jon's place in the narrative and becomes an Avatar of the Eye, but in Gundam proper we honestly have no idea? First thought was Web but he's not manipulative enough for that, it feels like he should fall to one of the fears but idk which one? Maybe the Buried, like in a metaphorical buried by his responsibilities type way
Ryu: he's too mentally okay to fall to any of the fears tbh, i think his death is a catalyst to the others falling to the fears more though
Lalah: first thought was Eye but after thinking about it more she's definitely an Avatar of the End, especially with that scene where she predicts a swan dying right before it does. She just has End avatar vibes idk how to explain it
Garma: okay he was only in a couple of episodes but there's a really fun concept we have where Char fucks up killing him and he becomes an Avatar of the Lonely and he shows up periodically as a "ghost" to psychologically torment Char. realistically he'd be an avatar of the slaughter if he was one at all, but fuck being realistic this concept is more fun
Bonus: Kamille becomes and End Avatar at the end of Gundam Zeta

r/fantasy bingo is this awesome reading challenge that happens over on reddit each year. 2016 was the first year I joined and it was a great way to expand my SFF reading habits. The 2017 bingo challenge is now live and will be running from April 1, 2017 – March 31, 2018 if anyone is interested in joining.
I didn’t actually think I’d finish this challenge. I was on track to do so, planning to knock out the last three books while recovering from a minor surgery. Then I got a horrific cold, had trouble getting into one of the books and started to panic about graduating. Technically I only needed to finish 25 books for the challenge but I’d made a goal of 75 and was feeling down about failing to reach it. But the last day of the challenge I finished a book I’d put down for two months, realized it counted for my unfilled square and quickly rearranged everything.
In 2016 I’d just gotten out of a three year reading slump and was trying to find books I enjoyed. r/fantasy bingo seemed like a fun challenge and so I jumped in part way through the summer. The thought process behind this overly large amount of books was that I wanted to really diversify my reading so I did a full card of books written only by women and a full card of books written only by people of colour or Indigenous people, plus an additional card of random books (which will turn into a card of small press books in 2017).
An additional rule was that a minimum of 50% of books must be written by people of colour and Indigenous authors. I met that goal with 47% (35/75) of books by people of colour and 4% (4/75) of books by Indigenous authors, for an total of 51%. Gender wise the books broke down to 28% men (21/75), 67% women (50/75), and 5% both (4/75), either in the 2+ authors square or short story anthologies.
I loved this bingo challenge. I learnt so much about my reading preferences (deep characterization all the way), discovered so many good books I might have passed up or never gotten too, had a lot of good conversations and got so many great recommendations. This was such a great experience and I’m looking to expand the 2017 bingo with a small press/indie/self-published card and a queer and trans characters/authors card.
Top Six Books (2 for each card although it was very hard to choose)
Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bancroft: Senlin Ascends is exactly the type of fantasy I love, cultural mashups filled with mythology and blending genres, and well-written characters that develop and grow over the course of the book. I could barely put it down near the end.
The Devourers by Indra Das: Every time I try to describe this book it ends up getting boiled down to werewolves in India. But it’s so much more than that, it’s a compilation of history and mythology all wrapped up in beautiful and brutal prose.
The Enchantment Emporium by Tanya Huff: I know this book isn’t going to be everyone’s favourite but it took me completely by surprise. It’s a fast-paced, paranormal romance urban fantasy full of genre tropes set in Calgary with deadpan Canadian humour. The sequels weren’t as solid as the first book but The Enchantment Emporium was one of the best and weirdest books I read last year.
The Golem and the Jinni by Helen Wecker: I couldn’t believe how much Wecker brought The Golem and the Jinni to life. Every character was compelling and I could have sworn I was walking down the streets of New York in 1899.
Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee: It’s really hard to explain just how much I love Ninefox Gambit. I’m new to reading sci-fi and never though I would come to enjoy a military space opera but wound up crying uncontrollably half-way through the book, unable to put it down.
Ancient, Ancient by Kiini Ibura Salaam: This was just such an original, beautiful, weird, compelling collection short stories. It grabbed me from the first page and didn’t let go until the end.
Honourable Mentions
A Stranger in Olondria  by Sofia Samatar
Kalpa Imerial: The Greatest Empire That Never Was by Angélica Gorodischer
King’s Shield by Sherwood Smith
Top Three Disappointments
The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson: Sanderson appears to be almost universally loved and so I had a really hard time figuring out why I didn’t enjoy Mistborn until I realized that his characters tend to be very cardboard-like. One of the benefits of reading so much SFF over a year is learning your reading tastes and unfortunately/fortunately I need deep characterization and Sanderson just doesn’t do it.
Octavia’s Brood, edited by by Adrienne Maree Brown & Walidah Imarisha: I was really excited for this anthology but found in the end it just fell flat. The concept was really cool, to have a collection written by activists from social justice movements, many of which were first time writers. But that was also its downfall in my opinion. A lot of the stories just didn’t go anywhere or left me hanging in a bad way and months after reading it I can’t remember a single story from the collection that stood out to me.
A Book of Tongues by Gemma Files: Normally when I don’t like books it’s due to the writing style, but my dislike for A Book of Tongues is purely content related. I had to finish this one because I was using it for two reading challenges and was running out of time, but would have put it down immediately otherwise due to the colonial racist genre tropes and anti-semitism. Do not recommend.
Magic Realism – Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami/ What is Yours is Not Yours by Helen Oyeyemi/ Beauty is a Wound by Eka Kurniawan
