#chara dreemurr of the dreemurr family adopted by the dreemurrs
Text
chara undertale is one of those people that are simultaneously touch-starved and touch-repulsed so they're just over here exploding while the dreemurrs give them the first healthy dose of love and attention in their short miserable life.

Here's a little snippet of some out-of-context scenario I wrote about Chara while trying to deal with my own feelings.
Chara recoiled at the memory. Why did they say that? It hadn't even sounded like them, or at least the perfect, well-behaved, never-troubled version of themself that they let other people see. They hated the Dreemurrs. They decided right then and there. Their "new family" was corrupting them, taking what little good they had in them. They never would have lashed out like that with...before they fell. They never would have let anyone see them like that. They squeezed their eyes shut against the rush of their thoughts. Now the Dreemurrs could see what they really were: selfish, and evil, and ugly. Did they even deserve to be here at all?

okay so here's the thing about chara. i don't have an opinion on whether they're good or evil because i think they're a teenager. like i think they're twelve, they're purposefully vague and ambiguous and a little bit of a weirdo and all things considered? it checks out

EDIT 14/03 : Since many people have been sharing this post around (mostly on reddit) and incorrectly assuming it to be the full argument tied with the book reveals mentioned, please keep in mind this was made just a few hours after the book extracts were released and it doesn’t contain all the information there is at all about the book or even about the arguments made regarding the extracts. It was just made (in a slight rush, i may add) to briefly inform people of the overall discoveries made via the book a few hours earlier. There are more things to say about those with are not shared in this post !
So you may have heard about the Undertale legends of localisation 3 book currently available for pre-order of Fangamer.
Tumblr media
Recently, a few images from this book have made their way online a few of them are very intriguing lore wise. At first i’ve suspected them to be fake due to the magnitude of the information given, but after verification those did in fact turn out to be real extracts from the book.
This book is a document which is both specified as "made with full access to Toby Fox" and "not part of Undertale merch" (Possibly to avoid the stigma about debatable merch canonicity due to Toby’s old tweet about it ?).
(Most) of it was not written by hand by Toby but it was said to be reflective of Toby's vision of the game and is therefore to be considered as official information.
The most important piece of information to have come out of this book as of today is the following section, more specifically the first paragraph.
Tumblr media
And this tells us several very important things that seem to confirm and deconfirm a couple of old UT fan theories !
To start with the less important one :
1 - Chara is excluded from "The three members of the Dreemurr family".
This line coupled with the alarm clock dialogue and a couple lines where Toriel and Asgore refer to Chara in an odd manner seem to imply that Chara may not have wanted to be considered a Dreemurr (Which the Dreemurrs would respect, but the rest of the kingdom would still assume them to be Asriel's sibling), or that they were simply never properly 'adopted' by the Dreemurrs and only lived and were treated as if they were.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(is Chara not considered their child ?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2 - The Undertale three entities thesis is correct. That is, that there is a trio of 3 entities able to control Frisk's body (Frisk, Chara, and the player.)
This has two sides, first off, it means that :
1) Chara does in fact, have to be bound with Frisk in every route and not just in genocide. There were already several ways to know this via the game of course, but no direct implication of this from outside media existed until now. (There were a couple indirect ones)
It is however not a proof of NarraChara as it could still be possible for Chara to fulfill this role described here by being around Frisk, but not necessarily also being the narrator of the game. Nevertheless, it does still fairly strongly supports the theory and deconfirms one of its antithesises).
And 2) : The second side is that this would also have to make the player a canon entity in Undertale as well in order to complete that triforce. The player cannot be a third party vying for control of Frisk’s body if they do not exist in-world.
You can also point out how just before saying that, the text also portrays Monsters, Humans and the player as a set of three and thus shows that Frisk must be a different entity from the player that way as well.
This book contains yet more information to be analysed and whilst i intend to obtain my own physical copy as soon as possible, until then updates regarding it will only be as fast as new information appears.

i don't have the energy to make a full explanation right now, but the more i think about it, the harder i lean towards seeing chara's relationship with the dreemurrs as something more like a mediaeval, fairytale style ward/protège rather than a realistic adoption situation.
because we've seen toby do that relationship in deltarune with kris, and the difference between those two portrayals kinda seals the two as separate for me. there's this... perpetual othering of chara, both as a human and as part of the family (asgore and toriel will both go out of their way to NOT call them their child. as in call asriel their son, and then call chara "someone" or "the human i knew" within the same sentence, it's so interesting), that, if you interpreted them as their full on adoptive parents like in their deltarune versions, it would make them extremely neglectful ones, in a way that was definitely not intended by the story.
i think they were in a very loose, grey kind of familial/non-familial situation. gerson does refer to asriel and chara as "their children" after all, and though we can disregard the account of asriel's death by the monsters in new home as unreliable (the whole point of the segment is that they didn't realize what was going on, after all), gerson is thee single most trusted source of information on asgore and toriel that the game offers us, so disregarding his opinion as misinformed feels a bit like cherry picking personally. however, there is a very clear void between them, likely also caused by 1) chara's implied abusive past 2) their differing species, and the pressure of monsterkind being confined to the underground weighing on chara. maybe they tried to be a family and failed. maybe they never tried at all. who knows! however chara saw the dreemurrs, though, they clearly respected and loved them, and they were loved and respected in turn. so i think that's what mattered to them the most :']

Kris: ... I tried my best with each new arrival to be a trustworthy human... I can only hope I succeeded.
Tumblr media
Hey, just an author's note here—
I know the wording "Chara was the first" probably sounds a bit confusing since Kris is also adopted, technically making them the first.
But the headcanon here is Kris was adopted as a baby, so they're completely used to the Dreemurrs and always knew them as family because they grew up with them.
Chara did not. They felt like a stranger to Kris and vice versa
From their perspective, Chara was the first.

Who do you think Kris is? Is Kris Chara? Is Kris Frisk? Is Kris both? Is Kris his own person that conveniently has characteristics of Chara and Frisk? Is Kris the Dr version of Frisk but raised in a similar manner to Chara? (nature vs nurture thing) Is Kris meant to be a stand-in for Chara that shows what Chara would have been like if they were raised by a loving family from the beginning?
None of the above. Frisk and Chara are Kris split into two people...or more accurately, Kris's roles split across two people.
I feel like people keep forgetting that in Toby's mind and in his story planning, Kris came first. Sure, we played Undertale first, so we keep basing our frame of reference off of what we know of Frisk and Chara from Undertale. But our understanding is not complete right now!
In Undertale, Chara's role is the human that is adopted by the Dreemurrs, someone who is at least a little creepy and dislikes humans, and who prompts the player to question their actions. Frisk's role is the human that we actually play the game as, the one that makes friends on their journey, and that ultimately drives the story forward. In Deltarune, Kris encompasses all of those roles, and likely more we have yet to discover. I think it served the story's purpose in UT for those different roles to be split between two characters, especially to drive home the twist at the end that you were not naming the character you thought you were. But DR has a different story, and Kris being a separate and distinct character with their own desires is a major aspect of our interaction with the game.
So yeah...if people are thinking that Kris is one or the other, and that we'll see Chara show up in DR or something...yeah, I don't think that's happening at all. They don't exist in DR, because just Kris exists there.
And BTW, this isn't to harp on fic or comics or AUs and such that feature Frisk and/or Chara showing up in Deltarune, often with Azzy meeting them in college or such. Those are a lot of fun! But just talking strictly about canon, I think people need to abandon the idea of any of the UT humans showing up, or of Kris following along with what one of them did in UT. Kris is the one that's been setting the standard the whole time!

Re: the carlyraejepsans thing, I knew something was fishy when they reblogged shit that was tagged as ch*sriel by the OP... Even though they didn't tag with the ship name themselves, OP's tags were still caught by my filters.
Tumblr media
Also when scrolling through their Asriel tag to nab that screenshot, I also found this post:
Tumblr media
And then I found THIS post, reblogged from the same OP (wordbending) who made the ch*sriel-tagged post, about how "no guys I know they canonically see the Dreemurrs as family but Chara and Frisk totally aren't Asriel's siblings they are NOT adopted by the Dreemurrs" that you just know was made because the OP wants an excuse to ship incest without being called out for it being incest.
Tumblr media
(Not the full post, but it's as much as I can fit into the screenshot and it's enough to get the idea anyhow)
So seeing this combined with the stuff in your post really erases any benefit of the doubt I had left about them, this is really fucking disappointing and thank you for trying to spread awareness about it.
ughgh figures they have their own in(cest ship in utdr thanks I'll add it to the post

Imagine if Sunny (Omori) was in Chara's spot (Undertale). Just think about it...
Sunny manages to run away from the recital argument. In tears, he runs upset and angry away to the mountain to hide away. Maybe at that moment he feels like he wants to disappear, and he knows the legend of the mountain is that people disappear.
Sunny is upset with himself, with how he could never be enough. He was angry at Mari for supposedly being so perfect, for pushing him so hard. And so Sunny's own version of hating humanity began to grow. That he thought he was forced to do things, stay away from friends and practice, that he had to be PERFECT and PROPER and OBEDIENT. And he started to resent Mari for being perfect, resenting her for pushing him to be perfect, resenting her for being strict and angry and expecting so much.
When he gets to the cave, he didn't mean to trip and fall. But when he did, he accepted his fate in that moment. He never expected to survive the fall, though injured.
When Asriel found him, Sunny was in a daze. His head hurt and it all felt like a fever dream. But when he eventually became more conscious and made it to Asriel's home, he was TERRIFIED. While his injuries were healed and patched up, he hid away in the house. But of course, Sunny would come to fear the Dreemurrs less.
Sunny and Asriel would become brothers! After spending plenty of time there, Sunny was soon adopted. He felt at home. Was it perfect? No. But he felt comfortable. Asriel and Sunny were very close, not just because Asriel already didn't have many friends. Sunny was quiet, he was a good listener. They drew together and read books and played in the garden. Sunny didn't talk too much about his home on the surface, but Asriel respected his privacy. Asriel thought Sunny was very cool, and Sunny loved Asriel as a brother very much. He would sneak into his bed if he had a nightmare.
Toriel was a doting mother, though she of course wasn't perfect and didn't know quite how to raise Sunny at first. But she always made sure he felt loved. Asgore treated Sunny like his own child from the beginning, giving him bear hugs and sharing tea. Sunny was away from all his stress, and now lived in a fantastical world with a fairytale family.
He probably lived with them longer than Chara. Getting there when he was 12, he at least stayed until he was 15 before... Sunny wanted to give back. It wasn't fair that the monsters were stuck underground where they could never see the sun. Sunny was supposed to be an Angel of sorts. He felt like he had to do something.
So, Asriel and Sunny formed a plan they were both hesitant about. Sunny would die, Asriel would take his soul and absorb it, and they would cross the barrier to the surface. And they did. They planned to visit a hospital where people were already dying, and they would get the souls they needed. But then they passed by Sunny's old friends. Sunny, in this state, was angry. He couldn't help himself, and he lashed out.
Asriel did his best to hold Sunny back, both of them in tears. In the end, they hugged in their shared mind space and promised to go home. But Asriel was already too injured from humans fighting back.
When they returned to the underground, Asriel faded to dust and Sunny's consciousness fell into a deep slumber.
=================
And then ghost Sunny shenanigans with Frisk?! I think it'd be funny if Frisk was like. Hero and Mari's future kid or grand kid.
Anyway I like this idea a lot, feel free to reblog with your own inputs haha

The differences between this story and the canon:
Tumblr media
*In this story, Frisk is stoic at first, but he become a warmer and softer person over time, when Frisk gets to know Papyrus better. Frisk actually helps Papyrus when he loses all hope later in the story. Unlike in canon, Frisk doesn't forgive the ones that hurt him right away, they'd have to EARN his forgiveness.
*In canon, Frisk and Chara are non-binary... in this story, they're both boys... because the girl versions of them often get sexualized and it makes me uncomfortable.
*In this story, Papyrus is much less childish and naive (thanks to Toriel teaching him many things instead of leaving him in the dark, like Undyne and Alphys and Sans sometimes do), he's still arrogant but the whole journey will humble him and he chooses the side that prevents humanity from being wiped out (cause Toriel told him stories of monsters and humans once getting along).
*In this story, Undyne is still stubborn and hotheaded, but not as quite much as in canon and she is somewhat more mature as well... She also has an actual reason for hating humanity, which is connected to her eyepatch... And she doesn't enjoy attacking Frisk, like she does in canon, but she believes that she has to cause it's her job.
*In this story, Alphys is a bit sassier and snarkier, especially around Mettaton... She also idolizes Papyrus (for protecting Frisk and acting like a rebellious hero, similar to MEW MEW KISSY CUTIE) and she wants to be seen as a fellow hero by him (which backfires horribly for her).
*MEW MEW KISSY CUTIE is about a heroic cat girl rebelling against a corrupted city.
*In this story, Mettaton is a bit nobler and kinder then in canon... Instead of instantly ditching Napstablook, Mettaton begged Napstablook to let Alphys a robot body for him as well, so they could be TV Stars together, but Napstablook refused... Also, Mettaton views himself as the only true human fan (believing that Alphys only likes human stuff, not the species, since Alphys doesn't want to actually help Frisk get past Asgore) and Mettaton wants to save the humans as well as become one of them... even if it means getting a human soul first.
*In this story, Muffet is kinder then in canon... She doesn't scare her costumers into buying her treats and they're not as expensive either... Flowey kidnaps one of her family members and convinces her that Frisk did it.
*Grillby gives Sans some advice later on.
*Asgore Dreemurr's personality is mostly the same, but the Kingdom something a little messed up here... So the future generations won't question why they should wipe out humanity, when one of the King's children was a human... Most parents lie to their children about Chara's story: Saying that Chara was an adopted monster and was killed by the first human that came underground. Asgore killed the human, Asriel absorbed the human soul, crossed the barrier and tried to get more to free everyone, but the human village killed him first. Thus, the King declares war... Asgore wanted to stop these lies, but Gerson stops him, saying that this propaganda will encourage and inspire the kingdom more than the truth could... Asgore lets the propaganda happen and he hates himself for it.
*Toriel Dreemurr is mostly the same as in canon, the only thing that's different is that she's more aware that the deaths of the previous humans are almost as much her fault as they are Asgore's fault... However, she's still angry at Asgore for letting the future generations of the kingdom think that Chara was an adopted monster child, not a human child... Her anger is somewhat more justified then in canon.

TW)) Suicide, illness, pain, death, self-hatred
This is your reminder that death by buttercup poisoning is a HORRIFIC way to die. Seriously, just...google the symptoms, I don't have it in me to get into detail.
Chara, when they ate those buttercups, was probably somewhere between the ages of 9 and 14. That is very young to experience such a world of pain while dying.
Chara had already SEEN those terrible symptoms in Asgore. And yes, Chara might have been trying to make their death look natural for the plan, but they could at the very least have chosen a flower with slightly less horrible symptoms. Asgore is a gardener, for goodness' sake.
There is no logical reason they would have chosen such a terrible, terrible way to die unless they were,
a. a masochist (in a not-weird way of course this is a child) (and I feel like these symptoms are a little extreme for that)
b. Getting two birds with one stone and punishing themself for the Asgore pie incident.
Again, this is a child between the ages of 9-14.
...Somebody give them a hug.

Talltale Lore (info taken directly from my lore doc)
(Just showcasing 3 in this post) (also I’m not the best at drawing humanoids so bare with me lol)
More info about these characters will also be shared in the future btw, these descriptions don’t contain everything they have to offer in this AU, I will have many more tidbits in my “Lore Stuff” segments!
TALLTALE CHARA
Chara in this AU was experimented on by Gaster behind the Dreemurrs' back. Gaster injects a new (and very dangerous) substance into their soul (which I will reveal what it is later) and resulted in a slow painful death for them. However, after their death, the substance also starts to rapidly spread around the underground; destroying everything, killing everyone, and leaving Gaster as the only survivor (still coming up with how though).
This event causes Chara to not only become horribly corrupted till they are almost unrecognizable, but leaves them fuelled with anger and vengeance for all the pain Gaster caused them… All while the substance injected into them slowly starts to take over their mind and soul until it can use them as a host.
Also, whatever you believe in Undertale, whether you think Chara is evil, good, or neutral; This Chara is very different personality wise! In this AU, they are a very anxious person and could get scared very easily (before their corruption I mean). They have a lot of problems they are dealing with like self doubt, low self worth, anxiety, and trauma regarding their treatment on the surface. They also fear going to anyone about it, keeping their problems to themselves… Not helping that Asriel, although completely unintentional on his part, keeps dismissing how they feel… Not out of malice but simply because he just doesn’t understand their experiences and what they went and are going through.
Tumblr media
TALLTALE FRISK
Frisk is about 14 to 15 years old in this AU!
For their entire life so far, they grew up in foster care, resulting in them being very untrusting of others. One day, they get adopted by a family who is really kind and loving to them! But Frisk rejects their love and runs away in the middle of the night and wanders towards the mountain where they fall, and so the story begins. When Frisk falls, they are quite a jerk… but throughout the story or in the pacifist route (and especially after the pacifist ending) they slowly start to miss their adoptive family and they realize how wrong they were… Depending on the route, the player is who unknowingly guides them to where their character will end up. Frisk is also importantly supposed to have a parallel character-wise with Corrupted Chara… One I promise to explain far more in-depth Later!
When they run away, they fall into the underground only to find it completely destroyed... They run into Gaster to discover he's the only monster left. Everyone has died but most still roam the underground as vengeful and/or normal spirits. Gaster then puts them to the quest to free all the monster's restless souls wandering the underground just like he did with the 6 humans that fell before them, whether Frisk wants to or not.
And so, They begin their journey… Left with someone who constantly stalks and attacks them… Someone who just may be the most vengeful of all of those in the underground combined…
Tumblr media
TALLTALE ASRIEL
All he knows is that Chara went "missing" and desperately wants to find them! He's one of the first monsters Frisk encounters. In fact, he willingly goes along with you throughout Frisk's journey in the underground. In the canon/pacifist route, when Frisk discovers all the horrific things Gaster did to Chara… He starts freaking out and tearfully runs off and not soon after becomes a vengeful spirit. You fight all three of the Dreemurrs at once in this AU, having to free them one by one. With Toriel being the easiest and Asriel being the hardest and longest.
Before everything, Asriel was sadly never able to give Chara the pendent to signify them being best friends due to Chara suddenly going missing after a big fight the two had… (that comes in importance later, as well as the pendant for Chara's boss battle… So remember those two things!).
He feels horrible and guilty every time he sees it, but he still wears it regardless (he wears it in his spirit form btw) and as a personal reminder… a reminder that he won’t give up and abandon Chara despite everything and what they eventually became… As Asriel, although not his fault in the slightest, blames himself for everything that happened to them…
Asriel also plays a BIG role in the Genocide Route (In which I'll explain later).
(I haven’t remastered his spirit and Vengeful forms yet btw, the art is outdated but the designs are unchanged… however it would look jarring showing the outdated art next to these quick colored sketches hhh)

Chara Dreemurr
What we know is that Chara Dreemurr was the first human to fall into the mountain. They were adopted by then Queen Toriel and King Asgore and took a sibling role with Asriel. They were the one to push Asgore to bring the monsters from the caverns of Home into the open space of New Home, lighting the people with Hope for the future.
Tumblr media
From Asirel's dialogue here, we can understand that Chara was (likely) a victim of the humans in their village, and went to the mountain to kill themselves. Waking up and being loved by monsters, which Chara had likely grown up being taught were evil and cruel, was probably a bit of a shock. Still, Chara's love for the monsters, and for their new family, would bring them to eat some Golden Flowers and die, whereas Asriel would take their souls, cross the barrier, collect six more, and free all monsters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We don't know exactly how old Chara and Asirel were, but they were still children. I'd guess maybe 12, max. Both loved their parents, each other, and their people.
When Chara finally died after eating the flowers, Asriel did as planned- he absorbed their soul, and broke out of the barrier. He carried his siblings' body to their old village, laying them on a bed of flowers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's said that Chara was still speaking to Asirel at this point, their soul's Determination keeping them not exactly alive but not fully passed on. This is what kept them around even after Asirel's death so they can follow Frisk after their fall.
So, Chara was abused by humans growing up, going bad enough that, as a child, they attempted suicide. Their hatred towards humans was reiterated many times throughout the games, but still, they told Asriel to go to the village they'd grown up in. Why?
I think it's that same sense of Hope that follows Chara as the underground's human. The sense of "yes, they were wrong, and they hurt me and so many others - but if we want peace, we need to forgive."
We see that idea throughout the game, as well, playing as Frisk during the pacifist route. Monsters attack us, and we SPARE, or we MERCY, or we FLEE. We do not FIGHT, despite urging from those around us. We forgive them for attacking us, we forgive Toriel for fighting us and trying to trap us in the Ruins.
To say that Chara was cruel and unforgiving is wrong, in so many ways. They're the one who brought Hope to the underground, and they're the one who was loved so much that they changed the world and their death ripped apart an entire kingdom in its anguish. Chara is the first human the underground sees after humans trapped the monsters. They are an embodiment of imperfection and forgiveness.
Chara is not the monster. They're a child. And their only role in the Genocide route is to finish what we, the player, started - to let the Underground rest after we murdered its population.

For Full Res
From PTA (Poketale Ascendance) Chara's POV as she briefly wonders what might have happened if arceus had never found and adopted her into his family/took her into the pokemon world-
-------------
The idea came about cuz i recently replayed through the pacifist run again in celebration of Undertale's 7th anniversary
and I was thinking about my current Pokemon/Undertale AU and how in the Undertale universe of PTA, everyone's lives might actually be for the better because Chara never fell into Mt. Ebott and stuff.
Like Gaster may potentially live and not yeet himself across time and space and get shattered by his time machine basically since there wouldn't be any RESETs possibly until Frisk falls anyways. (since no Flowey, since i don't think Asriel would have died) when the dreemurrs meet the other 6 kids and possibly adopt them all too, just like how they all adopt Chara in the original story.
Asriel grows up to be a proper Prince/potential King when Asgore passes away and Toriel(? from old age-
**Currently unsure if the monsters ever do leave the Underground while Chara is off in the pokemon world/PokeEarth since PTA never really focuses on the Undertale world after arceus takes Chara away and stuff, since PTA is entirely from Chara's POV for the most part-**
I assume they do- but maybe the 6 kids and Frisk never like- digest buttercups and basically kill themselves like Chara does and they do successfully find some other way to break the barrier just having all 7 kids be alive and stuff- idek.
But ye-
Then while thinking this, I of course made myself sad as hell kinda cuz I adore the dreemurr family and Chara and Asriels friendship and stuff and i'm kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinda sad my chara never has that bond??
But at the same time I also kinda just think Chara is also better off with her Pokemon family and Arceus cuz she also gets to live for basically millions of years due to Dialga (and i guess Celebi) constantly rewinding Chara's time to keep her from dying of old age or whatever
and also potentially has a better support too in Arceus for her troubles and potential abuse from the humans of her village (just based on all the hints in Undertale/implications she was abused idk)
and- ye. then I got inspired to make this.
You can take this drawing and think of it for either POV(? idk.
but ye. it was mostly just for funsies and i hope you like
------
For PokeTale: Ascendance
An AU based off of an RP between me and a friend of mine from my discord server discord.gg/pQf9ZsdF6E where the Creation Trio as babies (a time they all cant really fully control their powers and junk) accidentally create a portal into the Undertale Universe and meet Chara and basically Arceus finds Chara and adopts her after finding out about her shitty human parents and Chara ends up helping Arceus raise the babies and basically lives in the Pokemon Universe now
