INDIAN SUMMER, 1875 by JÓZEF CHEŁMOŃSKI
INDIAN SUMMER is a painting of a flat landscape, the horizon line is positioned near the center of the painting, dividing the plane of the painting. The painting shows a barefoot girl in a white skirt and a shirt lying on the dun ground. She is holding a piece of gossamer in her lifted hand. The painting is painted under a cloudy sky.
With his back turned, a little black dog sits near the girl and looks at the herd in the background. The muted tones of brown and grey in the painting reflect the atmosphere of late summer. The white of the girl's skirt and the yellow of her scarf contrast each other and brighten up the middle of the composition.
One of the most important realists in the history of Polish painting is considered by some to be a realist who abandoned the use of costumes and historical style in order to accurately portray the world around him.
In contrast to the sentimental and romantic nature of his paintings, there is no overlapping of perspectives in his work, which catches the attention of the eye with beautiful and varied motifs.
