Tumblr media
First day of 6th grade. You didn't have many friends from Elementary school and the ones you did have were going to a different middle school. So you were starting over in the department. Which was fine, you could do that easily. Maybe. So here you were climbing onto the bus looking for an empty seat. Your eyes locked with a boy as he moves his bag from the seat before waving you over to sit next to him.
"Hi! I'm Lee Henry." He grins at you.
"I'm y/n. Why do you have two names?" You asked him smiling.
"I don't know my mom and dad never told me why."
"Oh. That's okay, your cool can we be friends?"
"Yeah!"
—— 4 years later
Now four years later you spend most of your time at his house with his family. They're different than what you're used to. You love it at his house it's never quiet, and there's always something going on. While at your house it's usually just you by yourself since your mom works a lot to support two of you and your dad was in jail last time you heard.
"Good morning kids." Herrmann walks down the stairs with his work bag seeing you on his couch with his kids as he has for over 3 years.
"Good morning."
"Y/n where's rent huh? With you here so much you otta start paying."
"Oh come on im practically your sixth kid you can't get rid of me." You laugh looking back at him.
"Didn't say I was getting rid of you. Just charging you." He laughs setting his bag down behind the couch.
"Same difference." You glared at him playfully. He smiles ruffling your hair.
"Sure." He chuckled. "Where's you mom at?" He directs the question to his oldest son.
"Kitchen."
"Okay go back to your game." He says walking out of the room.
"When did your mom say you had to be home anyway?" Lee Henry asks you.
"You tired of me already?" You laugh.
"No just wanted to know how much time we have."
"Before 7, she wants to have a movie night." You say not taking your eyes off the TV.
"Eh, you get to spend most of the day with your favorite herrmann." Lee Henry jokes.
"For the first time your right. I love spending time with Kenny." You joke motioning to the 3-year-old who sat in front of you drawing.
"Don't worry I prefer his company over you too." Lee pushes you gently.
"As you should."

“Need any help with the inventory?” Sylvie asked.
“I think I’m finished up,” you laughed, "you bored or something Brett?"
"I know I've only been in Chicago for a few months, but this is the first shift I've had with no-"
"I'm gonna cut you off right there before you jinx us. Those who say the 'Q' word or even think about the lack of runs is a jinx to the whole house."
"How do you know this?"
"Candidiate a few years back-"
Battalion 25, Truck 81, Engine 51, Squad 3, Ambulance 61, building fire, 723 North Wabash
"Looks like you are the new jinx, Sylvie Brett," you laughed, hopping into the passenger seat of 61, "and the jinx gets to drive."
Sylvie started the short drive to the scene, "how's it going with you and Casey?"
"Good, yeah, we're in a good place. It's weird to date someone you work with though. I'd never done that before Matt."
"Helps that your crazy schedules are synced."
"True that," you giggled, pulling up to the fire.
You hopped out of the rig and grabbed the jump bag before heading over to Boden.
"Where do you need us, Chief?" you asked.
"Two still inside, owner needs to be checked out."
As you and Sylvie tended to your victim, you could hear the commotion between truck and squad.
'Chief, I need a medic inside if you have one to spare' your radio buzzed.
"You good here?" You asked Sylvie.
"Yup, go."
You threw your bunker coat on and grabbed the jump bag.
"Medic coming in now, Casey. Where am I going?" you said, hustling towards the fire.
"I'll come get you, we're turned around in here."
You stopped and waited at the door.
"Fire is pretty much out," he announced, "follow behind me."
You followed Casey into the building and up the stairs.
"Baby, I need you to stay behind me no matter what," Matt admitted, "I don't know what hapened in here and I don't want anything to happen to you."
You nodded and followed him up the stairs to the second floor of the building.
"Victim is over here. Burns and possibly a neck injury as far as we can tell.”
“Thanks. Conscious?”
“In and out.”
You leaned down beside your victim.
“I’m a paramedic, I’m here to help you,” you introduced yourself as you undressed the victim of his jacket.
“Matt, you’re right. I’m worried about a neck injury. Grab the collar.”
Your boyfriend, now assistant, handed you your supplies.
“Help me get him out of here. It’s getting hotter in here.”
He nodded, picking up the jump bag beside him and handing it to you.
“Got him?” You asked.
He nodded and brought your victim outside.
After finding Sylvie, you loaded up the victim while Sylvie got the oxygen ready for the ride to the hospital.
——
Returning to the house after your run, you looked in the ambo’s mirror.
“Brett, did you seriously let me ride around with soot on my face?” You laughed, trying to rub it away.
You walked into the now full common room with your partner.
“So are we finally gonna convince you to take the firefighter’s test?” Herrmann asked.
“Haha, very funny Herrmann. 61’s my home, always will be.”
“I’m sure we’ll get you over here at some point,” he chuckled.
You ducked out of the common room and into the bunk room, where you peeked into Matt’s office.
“Got a minute?” You asked.
“For you? Always.”
You locked the door behind you.
“You know,” you laid down, semi-seductively, on his bed, “they way you said ‘stay behind me no matter what’ on that last call was-“
He leapt up from his chair and drew the blinds.
“Was what?” He smiled.
“I was kinda sexy,” you grinned.
“Oh yeah?” He leaned in for a kiss.
“Yeah.”
“You know what else is sexy?” He broke the kiss for a moment, “you with all that soot on your face.”
“I guess we should do something about these feelings then, huh Matt Casey?”
“I think you might be right.”

I think
“I didn’t know they were weed brownies!” And “I swear, it’s the truth!”
Would be really funny with Chicago Fire if you’d be so kind 🥰🥰🥰
Tumblr media
Matt Casey liked to think that every return he made back to Chicago was a breath of fresh air. Not that looking after the boys was difficult and he didn't enjoy it, but a reminder of his old life was often exactly what he needed in his new one. Of course, seeing you was the primary reason he came home, but his 51 family was more than a bonus.
Matt had decided to make for the station before the hotel. There were only a couple hours left of shift and he was ready for the placid atmosphere typical after twenty-two hours already on the job.
“I didn’t know they were weed brownies!"
The bounce in his step waned slightly as he let the door shut behind him. He could tell his sister's voice from a mile away, but the tone of it was one he wasn't used to.
"I swear, it’s the truth. These little kids were selling them, I thought they were sweet kids—they seriously looked like sweet kids."
“I, yeah—" There was a snort of laughter. Sylvie. "We believe you, Y/N.”
"Don’t doubt it, girl!" Stella sounded as enthusiastic as possible, but that same hint of amusement was evident in her voice.
Matt couldn't help his concern, quickening his pace and rounding the engine truck. The ambulance back doors were open, and you were sat at the edge, terror written all over your face. Stella was sat on her haunches in front of you, hands on your knees. Sylvie was on one side, a blood pressure monitor in her hands, and Violet was rummaging through a bag on the other.
Your wide eyes—wide, groggy eyes—met his the moment he made himself visible.
“Matty!” You made to jump up, but the girls stopped you before you could, blurting all kinds about slowing down and blood and heart.
Matt could tell you were on the verge of tears, could see the quivering of your lips and the watering of your already watering eyes. Quickly, he dropped his bag on the floor and rushed across to envelop you in a hug, cupping the back of your head to his chest. "Hey, there," he said. He met Stella's eyes, the captain having stood up, and mouthed a "what happened?" over your head.
Stella mouthed a simple "brownies" back, as though that answered the question perfectly. Luckily, you helped out.
“Matt, I took drugs," you spoke quietly. Matt's frown deepened.
The girls jumped to attention. "Not on purpose!" Sylvie said.
"Not on purpose," Stella confirmed. "Some douche was giving his kids weed brownies to sell outside his garage. Either that or someone got their recipes seriously mixed up. Boden’s sent CPD down there.”
You twirled a lock of your brother's hair around a finger, still clinging to him. “CPD’s gonna beat someone's ass," you said pointedly, "I paid eight dollars for those brownies.”
Violet crossed her arms over her chest. “Hey, Y/N, how many did you eat again?”
“Four.” Your voice was muffled, yiur face buried in Matt's chest, but everyone heard it.
Sylvie. "Rough."
"They were so good," you said.
There was a general silence, something concern probably should have filled, but after a moment the amusement of the situation set in, and smiles broke out.
"Can I assume she's gonna be fine?" Matt asked. He gently pulled away from you and guided you to sit back down on the truck.
Sylvie nodded, crossing her arms. "She's got an elevated heart rate and she'll be loopy for a bit longer but yeah, she'll be okay."
"What if the kids come after me?" You let your head drop against Matt's shoulder.
"What's that, sweetheart?" Matt asked.
"What if the brownie kids come back because I sent the cops on them?"
Sylvie put a fist to her mouth
"That's not gonna happen," Matt assured you, "don't worry."
Stella clapped her hands together after Kylie's voice asking for her echoed throughout the station. "Okay, crazy, I'm gonna take you off duty for the rest of shift, okay?"
You face fell. "Oh, but—can I still stay at the firehouse?"
"Probably best," Stella agreed.
Matt stood up. "Hey, Lieutenant, you need someone to fill in?"
Stella grinned, pointing a finger towards him as she backed out of the room. "Luckily for you, ex-Lieutenant, a spot just opened up. Go get a drink, Y/N, and stay where we can keep an eye on you. Hey, hey, Hermann, can you escort her into the common room? Don't leave her."
Hermann, who'd been passing by with an apple in hand, didn't have much of a choice as Matt passed his sister onto him with a kiss to your hot forehead before running off to change. Hermann took your arm in his when you went to fall.
"The hell's up with you? You sick?"
"I took drugs."
"What?"

Last resort | Leslie Shay
Tumblr media
Pairing: Leslie Shay x Firefighter!Reader Reader pronouns used: she/her Summary: Chief Boden orders everyone to evacuate the building, will you follow his orders when you hear a baby crying? Masterlist | Chicago Fire masterlist | Words: 2.1K
It had been a quiet day at 51, you were playing cards with the rest of squad 3 when the alarms went off, signaling all units to move to an apartment fire. You jumped up and ran to the truck, kicking your shoes off and stepping into your boots. You pulled the pants up, the suspenders over your shoulders, and hopped in your seat. Squad was the first to pull out of the firehouse. Severide taps away on his tablet, “Okay, squad, listen up. The fire is fully evolved. We’ll be the first company on scene, let’s work quickly. When we’re on scene we have to move fast. Let’s wait on Bodens orders, y/l/n you’re with Cruz, Tony with Capp, and Mills you’re with me. Do you copy?” You all let him know that you copy him and mentally prepare for the call you’re about to have.
When you arrive at the scene you can immediately tell that it’s bad. “Alright, people, let’s go to work.” Boden says over the radio. “Truck 81,  primary search on the first floor, Squad 3 you take the second and third. Engine, I want a line on the first floor and raise the aerial in case it’s needed. Ambulance 61, set up triage. Let’s go, people.” You look to Kelly to hear which floor you have to go to. “Cruz, y/l/n, second floor. The rest with me to the third.”
Once arrived on the second floor, you and Cruz go door to door. The fire has already reached this floor too, so you have to kick in all the doors to check for people that might’ve passed out from the smoke. Cruz takes the north wall and you take the south of the massive hallway. You kick in another door and yell, “Fire department, call out.” Into the room. You hear a man call out, “Over here.” They hid in the bathroom. You help them stand up and walk them back to the stairwell. They seemed to be doing fine, so you urged them to walk down by themselves, making sure to tell them to get checked out at triage. When you walk back you see Cruz helped an elderly woman to the stairs as well. “Need a hand?” You ask. He shakes his hand, “No, keep going, I’ve got this one.” So, you do, door after door, you search the room. A lot of the apartments are empty already, people that weren’t home or that walked downstairs at the first sign of something wrong, you were glad there weren’t a lot of people because the smoke started to get thicker and the flames bigger. Cruz was already back kicking in doors as well, when you heard Boden’s voice over the radio. “Attention all units, five more minutes and then I want everybody out.” You look over at the many doors you have yet to check and speed up your pace.
It hadn’t even been five minutes yet when the next order came over the radio. “Attention all units, I’m calling it. Everybody out!” You hate leaving all these rooms unchecked, but you knew that Boden was right, the fire was strong. You followed Cruz towards the stairs when you heard a faint cry that stopped you in your tracks. When you heard it again, it sounded like a little kid. You had to make a decision, follow orders, or try to save the child. Against your better judgment you turn around and take off in the direction of the cries, leaving Cruz behind. The crying gets louder the further that you walk down the hallway, meaning that you are getting closer.
Cruz walks out the door and takes his mask off to take a deep breath. He sees the rest of 51  standing behind Boden, all looking in his direction. Boden is quick to speak up, “Cruz, where is y/l/n?” Cruz looks around thinking you were right behind him this whole time. “She was right behind me.” He says in disbelief, already putting his mask back on. “Cruz, stand down. I can’t let anyone back in.” He reaches for his radio. “Y/l/n, report. I want you out of this building, right now.” You hear his request on the radio, but ignore it as you’re kicking in the door that you hear the crying coming from. The fire has already made it through the ceiling of the living room, you crouch down making your way over to the crying. When you reach an open bedroom door you find the crying baby. He was lying in the arms of a woman laying on the floor. You quickly check for a pulse, you’re relieved when you feel a regular heartbeat, she must have passed out from all the smoke that was filling the room. “Y/l/n, report.” You hear over the radio again, worry now present in his voice. You don’t have time to respond as you hear a voice coming from underneath the bed. “Is mommy okay?” You look under and find a girl who can’t be more than three years old. Your heart sinks, how were you going to get all three of them out, with the fire getting stronger and stronger. Setting aside your worries, you pull her out from under the bed. “Mommy is okay, the smoke just made her really sleepy, that’s all.” You take the young girl by the hand and pick up the baby, to move them to the bathroom where you’d all have some more room to breathe. “I’m going to get your mommy now. I will be right back, I promise.” You sit down next to the mom, feeling her pulse once again. Still a steady heartbeat. You reach for your radio. “Chief.” You take a deep breath before speaking again. “Chief, is Leslie with you?” Chief Boden ushers Shay closer. “She’s standing next to me. What's going on?” Shay shares a worried look with him. “Leslie, baby, are you there?” You hear her respond with a shaky voice. “Yes, the line is open, you’re scaring me, what’s going on?” - “I love you so much, but I have to try. I just wanted to let you know that I love you, in case I..” She interrupts you, “Don’t say it, you come back to me okay. I love you, please come back to me.” It breaks your heart to hear her like this. “I’ll try my best, I promise.”
You grab the bedsheet and drag the mom towards the bathroom where you left the kids. Once inside you take off your mask. The little girl is crying, you take off your glove and wipe away the tears. “I know it’s scary, but I’m here to help. My name is y/n, what about you?” Between sobs she tells you that her name is Mila. “Okay, Mila, let’s get you all out of here.” You take off your oxygen tank and your coat, before you turn the water on in the bath, drowning the bedsheets. “Mila, honey, come here. I’m going to wrap this around you, okay? And then I want you to climb on my back.” The girl nods. You were trying to create some sort of carrier with the sheet that would hold both Mila and her little brother, so that your hands were free for their mom.” Once you had Mila attached to your back, you picked up the baby and wrapped him to your front. “I’m going to put my coat back over you okay, I want you to be very still and hold on to me, okay honey?” You button up the coat so that both the kids are safe from the fire. With the remaining part of the bedding you wrap up the mom’s body, making sure that she has some kind of protection from the flames before you pick her up and take one last breath of oxygen from your mask, since you had to leave it behind.
The fire had spread through more parts of the apartment, but there was no going back now. You went around as much fire as possible and jumped through the ones you couldn’t go around. To your surprise you made it to the stairs. You hold the mom close as you decent, quick but careful. The smoke was really starting to get to you, but you couldn’t stop, you made a promise to Mila and you intend on keeping it.
Outside the team was watching the building, hoping and praying that you would walk out of the door. They didn’t believe their eyes when they saw you exit the building, everyone running your way. Kelly takes the woman out of your arms and lays her down on the stretcher from one of the paramedics. You fall to your knees from coughing so much. Leslie sits down with you trying to calm down your breathing, while Cruz tries to help you up, but you push him off. Between coughs you manage to say, “The kids.” - “We can’t go back in, y/l/n. It’s too dangerous.” You shake your head and open your coat, revealing the improvised baby carrier. You shake off your coat to reveal a second child. Once your teammates take the kids from you to get checked out. Dawson is by your side with an oxygen mask, you eagerly put it over your face and take some deep breaths. “You scared me so much, please never do that again.” Leslie says hugging you tight.
Chief Boden steps your way. “You did good, y/l/n.” He says. “Get yourself checked out at the hospital, you took in a lot of smoke.” You nod in agreement. Dawson steps up to Boden, “Can Shay and I take her? I know Shay won’t want to leave her side right now.” Boden agrees to let them take you and will let dispatch know that ambulance 61 is out of order for the time being.
The doctors do some tests, they all go well and you are cleared to start duty right away. Dawson drives the ambulance back to the firehouse where your teammates gather as soon as they hear you pull up. You step out of the back with Leslie, as soon as they see you they’re all relieved to see you’re doing so well. “I’m all good, don’t worry guys.” You walk up to the Chief. “I got cleared for duty, Sir. I did have to leave some of my gear behind, though.” Boden nods, “We’ve got some spare tanks and masks, don’t worry about it. Glad to have you back.” Once Boden walks away you turn your attention back to the team, they all give you a hug or pat on the back. Luckily the rest of the day was slow, just a couple small calls, so you were able to catch your breath a bit more.
After a night of uninterrupted sleep, you join the team for breakfast. Mills cooked, and it was delicious as always. Boden ordered an inventory check on all the vehicles, so that’s where you headed next. You were crouched down checking equipment when you heard people walking outside. “Mommy, I see her!” You turn around at the familiar voice. Mila comes running up to you and jumps into your arms. “Hi Mila.” You hug her tight, seeing them here meant so much. Since another ambulance company treated them, you didn’t know how they were doing. Mila lets go after a while remembering something. “We made you cookies.” You smile at the little girl, you had only seen her scared on the scene, which made seeing her so cheerful now even more happy. She pulls you over to her mom who was talking with Leslie and Chief Boden. “Hi, I’m y/n, nice to meet you.” You say extending your hand. Instead of shaking your hand she goes in for a hug. “I’m sorry.” She says while stepping back. “Shaking your hand didn’t seem enough, you saved my life.” She looks down at her kids and adds, “Their lives. I owe you everything.” You smile at her, “No need to apologize, and of course, I was just doing my job.” The woman shakes her head, “Everyone that I have talked to has said that you went above and beyond for us. So, thank you. Thank you so much.” Hearing back from the people that you saved was so special. Knowing that you’re the reason they are able to stand right in front of you. “Do you have some time to stick around? I would love to show Mila the trucks, if she’d like.” Mila was already nodding her head enthusiastically, “Please, Mommy.”
Your girlfriend was watching you in awe as you posed for pictures with Mila on your lap behind the steering wheel of the Squad truck. While Chief Boden was proudly watching you interact with the family that you saved.

Everyone knows me at the dump. I don’t mean this in a bragging sort of way. In fact, I hate this fact. The reason why everyone knows me at the dump is that Mr. Jones, the dump operator, has posted the CCTV footage and blurry cell-phone camera pictures of my face on the break room wall. Even the youngest probie at the dump will look at me, every morning, while they wait for the coffee machine to dispense their mandatory cup of black joy.
You can probably guess why this has happened to me. I love junk, and the dump has a lot of that junk. To me, it is offensive that the dump hoards that junk. They keep it from me, using excuses like “sanitation” and “safety,” but safety is my middle name. If they would just give me a chance, then I would be the best they’ve ever seen. I’d even remove and sort the little lithium-ion vape batteries that haven’t exploded yet, out of gratitude.
Of course, we both know why I’m digging through trash at the dump. I don’t want old Betamax VCRs, or mouldy cardboard boxes heralding products from a bygone era. Well, I do, but I don’t want them more than I want a two-stroke dirt bike, and I’ve seen tons of those over the years get callously tossed into the debris pile by the great unwashed. They’re always getting thrown out for little reasons, like “carb jet plugged,” or “caught on fire,” or “couldn’t get anyone to buy it on Craigslist for septuple the market value so I threw it away out of spite.” I could save these bikes, and to be not allowed to save them is literal torture.
Just like anyone else would in my shoes, I started wearing elaborate disguises to the dump. Sometimes I could loot one, and throw it into the back of my car, and be gone before the dump operators (there weren’t even security guards yet, back then) could catch up to me. I had enough disguises – and enough cars – that I could pull this off for a little while. Then, used cars got really expensive, and the folks in my neighbourhood started using security fasteners to hold on their license plates. I started to escape by tighter and tighter scrapes, until one fateful day.
That bastard Jones figured me out. He came from Chicago, of all places, a city which I’m pretty sure doesn’t even have a dump. And he knew my kind. He set a trap: an agonizingly pristine, 1989 Yamaha XT225. Sure, it was a four-stroke, but it was still love at first sight. It was planted right on top of one of the big piles of disposable diapers, visible even from the highway. Even knowing it was a trap, I made plans for months to grab it.
The joke’s on him, though. I’ve started my own private dump, and I’ve paid the government to start outsourcing dump operations to me. We’re an extremely efficient operation, much more affordable for the taxpayer than the wasteful public dump. How so, you ask? Well, we are much more selective with what waste we accept, and we wrote one helluva contract, which had a bunch of big words that confused the gin-addled politicos that signed it out of desperation to meet their “lower taxes” pledge.
Here’s how it works. We charge the city hundreds of thousands of dollars a month, and we get first pick of any internal combustion engines that are in the back of the garbage trucks. Everything else goes down the road to the regular dump. We’re making a fortune. If we keep putting out numbers like this, I’m sure there will soon be layoffs over at Jones’ shithole. Hell, maybe I’ll even hire him to manage security around these parts. Can’t have anyone walking off with my good trash.

You were silent for the next hour. You sat there zoned out staring at the wall. You didn't want to talk you wanted to curl up in bed and cry. But you'll probably never get to go home, let alone to your own bed. Herrmann updated the firehouse before going back to sitting with you. Soon DCFS came and pulled Cindy and Christopher off to talk to them. Lee Henry stayed with you keeping a hand on yours
"My mom and dad will make sure you're safe." Lee Henry assures looking over at where his parents were. "I'm pretty sure they love you just as much if not more than their own kids." He says.
"Whatever you say Lee." You mutter following his eyes to the adults. Herrmann and Cindy both look a mix of relief and worry.
"" He tells you squeezing your hand. Before Herrmann waves you in. You and Lee both get up and go over.
"Y/n? Do you happen to know if your mother had a will?" The DCFS lady, Penny asks.
"Yeah she got it redone like two years ago."
"Do you happen to know if she put in the will what will happen you?"
"No she didnt tell me anything about her will. Just where to find it." You explain.
"Okay. So unless her will says otherwise the Herrmanns are filing for guardianship of you as long as you want that."
"Yeah thats what I want."
"Okay well grab your things. I have to bring you down to the office." You nod going to the chair and grabbing your bookbag.
"The will is in the top drawer of her desk it's in the living room." You say handing Christopher your keys to the apartment.
"Okay. Bye kiddo." He hugs you. You hug Cindy and Lee Henry before following Penny.
———
Cindy picked up the 4 youngest kids and went home while Herrmann and Lee Henry went to your apartment. It was Herrmann's first time being there. It is a quaint little place. Just big enough for you and your mom.
"Hey go grab anything you think Y/n would want kept safe." Christopher says to Lee Henry as he walks over to the desk. Lee goes to your room. Chris opens the drawer, there's a binder labeled important documents sitting at the top of the drawer. He pulls it out before sitting in the desk chair.
He opens it skimming through before he makes it to the will. He reads through it, everything would be yours at 18. Then he sees the part regarding you. He reads it's over before putting it back in the binder.
"You get everything?" He asks walking into your room.
"No." Lee Henry says as he digs through your bedside table drawer. He pulls something out and shoves it into an old ratted suitcase. Herrmann looks around you room before his eyes fall onto your dresser. There's a few picture frames, one of you and your mom, one of you, your grandma, and your mom, one of you, him, and Cindy, then one of you and Lee Henry from middle school. He grabs the one of you, him and Cindy, it was at the middle school talent show. You and Lee Henry put on a dance together for it. You two didn't win but it was fun. He grabs the pictures and put them into the bag.
"I'm gonna go grab her mom's jewelry box." Henry says after putting the stuff bear from your bed.
"Okay kid I'll finish in here." He says as his phone dings. It's your asking him to grab the small girrafe trinket from the bookshelf in the living room. He goes out and grabs it fiddling with it. Lee Henry comes out with the bag. "Ready?" He asks putting the girrafe in the bag.
"Yep."

Explosion- matt casey x reader
overview: after being called to a building collapse while searching through the rubble you find an explosive, luckily you being ex military had some idea on how to handle it. but when your husband and the rest of your team hear you say ‘clear the block’ tensions rise
trigger warning: fire, explosions, bombs, IED
prompt: ‘i’m 75% sure this won’t explode’
**
now Matthew Casey was the man you’d dreamed of, the type of man you wanted to end up with as a teenager. you both being firefighters you knew the strain the job put on you both. you were on squad and joined after leaving the military whereas your boyfriend was lieutenant of 81. matt had saved your life many times, not just at work but with your ptsd from the army.
you loved him so much, the majority of your time at the firehouse would be spent in his office joking around while he was filling out paperwork, that’s what you were doing as you laid on his bed.
“do you want to be a firefighter forever matt?” you asked, you’d thought you’d be in the army forever until you got shot and were honourably discharged luckily enough you healed better then expected and got into the fire department.
“yeah i mean this has been my life for such a long time. i love this job y/n i love this family” you smiled at his words as you got up walking over to his desk and sitting on his lap.
“i love you matt” he smiled and kissed you holding your waist tightly just as he started to deepen the kiss you were interrupted by the bells.
“Engine 51, truck 81, squad 3, ambulance 61-“ you groaned getting up as you both rushed to the trucks. building collapse. you knew this wasn’t gonna be good as you jumped in the squad truck sitting behind your lieutenant.
as you arrived on scene you were shocked seeing the rubble that used to be buildings, police were already on scene having set up triage. you got out the truck listening to your lieutenants orders. 81 and squad had to clear the rubble search for civilians so that’s what you did.
you and tony began covering the deepest part of the rubble, using all your strength you carefully moved pieces of rubble careful as what you were standing on could be unstable. you and the rest of your team called out looking for civilians, mass casualty situation you knew the paramedics would be swamped as firefighters pulled people from the rubble handing them over to triage.
it had already felt like hours when it had probably just been one, you’d only found 2 civilians and handed them over to triage to be treated multiple firefighters searching for people some even helping paramedics you looked around and couldn’t even spot half your team everyone busy and stressed looking for people.
you continued your search sweat pouring from your forehead, you didn’t have your turnout jacket on only your boots and trousers, chicago summer it was too hot for that. you kept searching finding another civilian a young woman, you carried her over to triage handing her over to any paramedic you could see, you knew she wasn’t in good shape, head injury easily a spine injury and internal bleeding. she had liquid coming from her ears blood pooling under her shirt, you watched as the paramedic shook their head and landed her with a black tag. you sighed and shook your head wiping your eyes as you turned heading back to the rubble, some people couldn’t be saved you have to fight for the people who can still be saved you told yourself heading back to the rubble.
you climbed back up into the possibly unstable rubble, passing a few firefighters on the way as you continued calling out for people and digging through the rubble your muscles aching as you lifted a few chunks of the rubble you noticed wires and you knew straight away. you very careful lifted one more piece of rubble putting it to the side when you looked back it had revealed a bomb, upon the sight your mouth went dry as you reached for your radio.
“chief boden report” you said voice shaking in your radio, you hear static then a voice.
“go for boden”
“clear the block. right now” you spoke in your radio looking away from the bomb and looking around you noticed a few of your team members look up at you from their positions having heard on the radio.
“right now! everyone get as far away from this area as you can i have a live bomb. get bomb squad here now.” you exclaimed as you watched your team jump into action.
matt heard your call over the radio and his heart dropped running over to boden, bringing his radio to his mouth.
“y/n why aren’t you moving we gotta evacuate!” casey exclaimed through the radio, you turned looking over at him.
“matt i’m pretty sure i can diffuse this okay? listen to me. i love you. get everyone to safety. you love this family i love this family keep everyone safe” his heart hurt as he listened to your words, he knew you were smart knew you were capable but diffusing a bomb one that was crushed in rubble was awful.
“no no. i’m not letting you get blown up bomb squad is 15 minutes out.”
“15 minutes is too long matt. clear the block please just listen to me” you spoke into your radio, you didn’t hear matts voice again, instead bodens.
“are you sure you can do this y/n?” boden spoke firmly into the radio.
“yeah i’m sure ex military remember chief” you smiled, you were the type of person to always make light of situations and matt loved that about you but right now right now he needed you to be safe.
you heard no response just looked over at boden and saw him nod as he and matt rushed off to clear the area, you glanced around noticing no one was now in your sight before you looked down at the bomb infront of you with a bleeping red light, you examined the wires coming from the small contraption attached to multiple explosives.
“i love you y/n be careful please” that’s all you heard through your radio, matts voice. god you loved that man.
“i’ll be okay matt, i love you too.” you raised your radio to your mouth.
“i have someone who wants to speak to you” you heard matts voice and then some static followed by jay halsteads voice. you and jay served together.
“y/n what type of bomb is it?” jay asked through the radio, you could hear the concern in your best friends voice.
“homemade IED, non military components. halstead i got this. i’m like 75% sure this won’t explode just let me do this. just keep matt well away from here” you spoke the longer you waited the longer people distracted you the more dangerous this became.
“copy” you heard, jay trusted you he knew you could do this. you were glad he was with matt. you looked down at the wires. one red, one green, one blue. you carefully looked to where the wires were connected. and pulled the blue wire disconnecting the trigger from the large explosive material strapped to the back the sweat beading on your forehead as you pulled the wire, you were good at staying calm but you felt like you were back in the military. you then pulled the red and green wire at the same time diffusing the bomb you felt a weight being lifted from your shoulders and you let out a breath you didn’t realise you were holding in as you stood up and got off the rubble, and away from the ied as quickly as possible it still wasn’t that stable. you let bomb squad take over as you rushed down the block to where the rest of your team were. you saw jay and matt stood and you ran into matts arms. he pulled you into him tightly holding you against his chest.
“you’re never doing that again” matt said holding you tightly against him, you chuckled and pulled away from him pressing a soft kiss to his lips.
“i’m alright matt, i’m okay” you whispered pulling away from the kiss, you knew matt now wouldn’t leave your side for a few days he was always like that, if something dangerous happened he couldn’t bring himself to leave your side.
“good job with that y/n glad your okay. call me later if you need anything” jay smiled and he shook your hand, he was your best friend but you were both military people, he was proud of you and you both helped each other out with the memories from war you’d both brought home.
“thank you, just fine out who did this okay?” he nodded before walking back to his team and then you walked back to yours with matt.
“well done y/l/n i think everyone owes you a drink tonight” kelly smiled shaking his hand, you laughed and thanked him. your team, matt they really meant the world to you.
you rode back to the station with matt and returned to his office, you collapsed down on his bed exhausted as you thought about the events that took place today.
“how are you feeling babe?” matt asked sitting on the edge of the bed, taking your hand in his.
“i’m good matt don’t worry, i’m just tired” you smiled tiredly it’d been a long day, you couldn’t wait until you could go home get in your warm bed and eat food with matt.
he nodded and kissed your forehead gently, you shook your head sitting up and hugging him, he hugged you back tightly.
“i love you so much y/n” he whispered in your ear you hated how bad he felt after situations like this, matt was your rock you loved him so much.
“i love you too matt”

Chapter Two
The smile you threw Meg was apologetic as you dragged a comb through your hair and ran down the stairs in search of your shoes. You’d had a crazy twelve hour shift at the hospital – Meg was thrilled to have to stay with your parents – and you’d overslept. Meg looked so much like her dad as she narrowed her eyes at you and folded her arms.
“I’m sorry baby,” you kissed her forehead, “you look nice. Ready for the party?” Meg was having a good time in school – despite her complaints about it – she’d been invited to her best friend’s brothers party that ‘The Beef’ was catering for.
“Mum, we’re gonna be late!”
“We won’t be, sweetie, I promise. I’m ready,” you toed your shoes on and then you were out the door.
Thankfully, you had missed the early morning rush and you made your way through the streets without too much hassle. You glanced over at Meg who was gazing out of the window, she’d taken to Chicago a lot quicker than you thought she would have. Better than you had taken to it anyway.
“Called your dad today?” you asked.
Meg hummed in response as she glanced back at you, “yeah. He says he misses us, misses you.”
You sighed as you glanced back at the road, “Meg, me and your dad are not getting back together. We tried, it didn’t work.”
Meg made a face, “then you need a date.”
You laughed, “what makes you think that I need a date?”
“Because you’re cranky.”
You raised an eyebrow as you pulled up outside the house, “I don’t think so,” you scoffed as you looked over at her, “I’ll pick you up at 6, okay?”
Meg nodded, “are you sure that you don’t want to come in? Your friend Richie will be there.”
You smiled as you tucked a flyaway curl behind her ear, “I’m sure baby, you have a great time.”
Meg kissed your cheek and got out of the car, you watched her head up to the house and made sure she got in okay. You didn’t restart the engine, you sat there for a couple of moments, looking up at the house as you debated on whether you should actually go in or not. After a good few minutes you decided to listen to your daughter and join the party.
It was Richie who opened the door, an unlit cigarette hanging from his mouth, “hey,” he grinned, pulling you in for a one armed hug, “good to see you.”
You laughed as you hugged him back, “and you. Jimmy won’t mind that I’m here, right?”
“Nah, course not. C’mon, let’s go and grab some food.”
Richie led you through the crowded house and into the backyard. Meg was talking to a guy with curly hair who was cooking hot dogs on the grill. As you came outside with Richie, Meg turned to look at you.
“Mum, you came!”
The guy Meg was talking to turned around and you felt the smile slip from your face as you stared at the handsome man. His hair was a little longer than it had been in high school, a couple of scars littered his cheek and he’d gotten some tattoos. His eyes though, his eyes were the same.
“Y/N,” he breathed, you didn’t know how to feel about him saying your name like that after so long. You wanted to hate it, you wanted to hate him. But you didn’t.
“Carmy, you’re back,” you didn’t know what else to say. Why hadn’t Richie told you he was back? Carmy nodded as he stared at you, the atmosphere was a little awkward. That was until Richie spoke.
“You gonna fuckin’ stare at her cuz, or are you gonna get her a hot dog?”
You laughed as Carmy rolled his eyes and he began to make you a fresh hot dog. Meg went over to join her friends as Richie poured you a cup of the luminous green punch.
“This meant to be the shit from Ghostbusters?” you asked, giving it a tentative sniff. Richie nodded and you took a small sip, “it’s good,” you laugh.
Richie went to cause chaos elsewhere, leaving you with Carmy. You thanked him as he passed you a hot dog and you slathered the sauce on top.
“So, you’ve got a kid huh?” he started with a raised eyebrow, when you nodded he busied himself with dishing up more hot dogs for the kids, muttering beneath his breath, “never knew that you wanted kids.”
You scoffed as you took a bite of the hot dog, trying to ignore how good it tasted, “well you know we never really got to have that conversation did we?” your voice was unintentionally bitter and you saw Carmy almost recoil.
“Yeah I know. Look, Y/N, I’m,” you cut him off, you didn’t have time for this.
It was funny, you had waited years for an apology but now, you didn’t want to hear it, “Carmy, you don’t have to say anything. Y’know, I can’t blame you for how you felt.”
The guilt was clear in his eyes and that honestly wasn’t your intention. You couldn’t say that you were necessarily happy to see him back but you weren’t going to be a complete child about it. You took another bite of the hot dog as you let the silence stretch between you, the only sound was the sizzle of the grill and the party going on inside the house.
“I’m really sorry about Mikey, Carmy.”
He let out a nervous laugh as he bent over the grill, refusing to look at you. He’d always been that way when he was nervous, “thanks, that’s er, that’s really nice of you. I know how much he meant to you as well, so y’know, I’m sorry too,” he smiled as he finally met your eyes, looking vulnerable and lost, “he left me the restaurant, Y/N. In his will.”
You couldn’t say that you were surprised, Mikey loved that restaurant and he loved his brother even more. What did surprise you was the bitter look on his face, it seemed as though a lot had happened while you were in London. But, you weren’t going to unpack that right now.
“That’s why you’re back?”
He nodded as he ran his hands through his hair, looking conflicted, “need to get the restaurant up to scratch.”
“And then?”
Carmy scoffed, rubbing a hand down his tired face, “and then. I don’t know,” he swore beneath his breath as he tried to squirt some ketchup onto the hot dogs but none came out.
You laughed a little as you watched him shake the bottle, his brow furrowed, “need some more ketchup?”
“Yeah, yeah, that would be great thank you.”
You nodded at him as you walked back into the house, managing to make your way through the group of pre-teens as you headed for the kitchen. You opened the fridge and found a half empty bottle of ketchup towards the back of the fridge and you grabbed more relish in case Carmy needed it.
As you turned to go back outside you saw Richie arguing with Jimmy and you walked over to them. Jimmy greeted you with a welcoming smile, “hey kid. Good to see you.”
“And you, Jimmy,” you smiled before you glared at Richie, “I can’t believe you didn’t tell me Carmy was back!” you hissed.
Richie held up his hands in mock defence and plastered an innocent look on his face, “it didn’t seem important.”
You scoffed, “didn’t seem important? Oh, and I suppose you told Syd not to mention anything either?” you’d met Syd at the restaurant on a day when Carmy clearly wasn’t there and you guys had become pretty close.
“Look, Y/N! I don’t know what you want me to fuckin say, you were heartbroken when you and Carm split. Sorry if I didn’t want to upset you.”
Richie’s words made you feel guilty but you pushed it right down. You shook your head as you pushed past him and went back outside to Carmy. Natalie was out there talking to Carmy but she looked pissed, she’d told you that she wasn’t coming and had conveniently left out the part about Carmy being back. Did everyone think you couldn’t handle it?
She waved at you as you came outside and she pulled you into a hug, “hey, you.”
“Hey,” you smiled as you put the bottle of ketchup and relish on the table, “good to see you. Thought you weren’t coming.”
She shrugged as she glared over at Carmy, “thought it was stupid not to come just because I’m pissed with Carmy. I’d never go anywhere if that was the case,” she laughed, when she realised what she’d said she shot you an apologetic look before she quickly changed the subject, “how’s work?”
You made a non-committal noise as you poured yourself another cup of the punch, “it’s going pretty well. Meg isn’t exactly thrilled with having to spend the nights that I’m at work at my mom’s.”
Nat laughed and pulled a face, you knew by her look that she remembered what your mom was like, “I’ll take her when you have to work.”
“No, Nat. I couldn’t ask you to do that.”
She laughed, “well that’s good because you’ll notice that I didn’t ask, she’s a great kid.”
Carmy nodded in agreement as he looked up at you, “she is, looks a lot like you.”
You laughed as you watched your daughter with her friends, “yeah, she’s got her dad’s attitude though.”
“Is he awful?” Carmy asked.
You looked up at him, his cheeks and nose were red from the cold and his curls were blowing in the wind slightly. There was genuine interest in his blue eyes as he waited for you to answer his question.
You sighed and looked away from him, shaking your head, “no, her dad’s great, we just um,” you trailed off, “let’s just say Meg was the only good thing to come out of our relationship.”
Carmy opened his mouth to reply but he was cut off when Meg walked over, “Mr Carmy, can I get another hot dog?”
Carmy grinned, “sure kid.”
You watched with a smile as Carmy quickly whipped up a hot dog, helping her put on the mustard along with the crispy onions and relish. When you and Nat approached Meg with the idea of her staying with Nat while you were at work. The look of relief on her face unfortunately told you that your mom was just as awful to your daughter as she was to you.
After the party you were driving home and you couldn’t ignore the happy look on Meg’s face as she ate another hot dog. Carmy had made her one for the road.
“You know mum, if you’re not getting back with dad, you should date Carmy.”
You laughed, “oh god, you don’t think he’s cute do you?”
Meg made a face, “ew no! He’s old like you but he’s really nice mum, he’s really nice to you.”
You held back a scoff, if only she knew. You hadn’t forgiven Carmy, and you probably never would, “yeah, maybe.”

When Steve was young and he pictured his future, the image his mind conjured was of a big, stately home in the suburbs of Chicago, with a beautiful wife who always had dinner on the table and kept a perfectly clean home, and six kids, three boys and three girls, who would be sweet and kind and loving, always up for a game of catch or a trip to the park with their father.
He didn’t picture this life, with a boyfriend who came home smelling of engine grease, both of them having forgot to take out anything for dinner, no kids, just a nasty old Maine coon named Sally that they adopted because they were sucked in by the humane society employee telling them she’d been repeatedly passed over by families looking for a younger, less wild cat, and a newly purchased little fixer upper with peeling paint and rotting floorboards on the outskirts of Hawkins. As Joyce had said, it made her home look like a palace.
Even the real estate agent had tried to talk them out of it. The house had been on the market for years, sitting unoccupied and unattended, left to rot away, rendering it almost unsalvageable. She’d begged them to reconsider, promising that she could find something better within their meager budget.
Steve had refused, even when Billy told him that maybe the real estate agent was right, maybe this wasn’t the house for them. The closest Steve had come to giving in had been when his foot had went through the floor, but he’d picked himself up, dusted himself off, and persisted, and the house had become theirs.
Every weekend was a new project, whether it be completely ripping out the floors and starting from scratch, taking advantage of Steve’s discount from his job at the lumber yard, re-caulking the unfortunately pink tub and sink in the bathroom, or painting the kitchen a bright, sunshine yellow. Claudia Henderson had found an old set of sky blue dishes and a little white table and chair set at a yard sale, and they completed the colour of the walls perfectly.
The took frequent trips to the home repair section at the Hawkins public library and consulted Hopper so often that he joked about putting in a second phone line just for their calls. With every brushstroke, refinished piece of gently used furniture, and hammered nail, the house got closer to being a home.
The finishing touch was a fire pit in the backyard. B+S was carved into the wet cement with a stick, and with that, they were done. They were home.
At their housewarming party, everyone asked Steve how he knew that the house was worth saving. How was he able to look past the rough edges and crumbling bits, and see the potential? He told everyone that it was just intuition, but the truth was, Steve had an eye for these things.
This wasn’t the first time this had happened. He’d once known a boy who was rough around the edges, someone that had been given up on by those around him, deemed a lost cause. But given love and care and time, that boy had risen to his full potential, and much like this old house, that boy was now Steve’s home.
