Summary: Chris the mayor of town is married to his wife Becca. When he hires a new press secretary who happens to be his lost love old feelings resurface and Chris finds it hard to resist the desire he once had for her
Parings: ChrisxMC
Tumblr media
Chris sighs as he walks down the street his jaw clenched Ugh I’m so sick of her I regret the day I even married her His phone rings in his pocket and he pulls it out and frowns at the caller id Great just what I need “Hello?”
“Chris! Becca just told me everything! How dare you sleep with another girl?!”
“Mr. Davenport…”
“Come over to the house and you better have a good explanation for this!” The call clicks off
Chris sighs Ugh he’s even worse than Becca Chris calls for an Uber and heads over to the house
****
Emily sat in her living room she sighs I feel bad I shouldn’t have done that while he was still with her and his wife is powerful I probably messed up his entire mayor election She sighs Maybe I should end things with him to avoid a scandal but I can’t do that to him I love Chris I want to be with him I don’t know what to do
****
Chris walks to the house and knocks on the door the door slowly opens and the scowling face of Becca’s father appears “Come inside and we’re gonna discuss this”
Chris sighs and heads in he walks into the living room and turns to face him
He pours himself some scotch “Now what did you do to my daughter?”
Chris sighs “I’m sure she told you already”
“I want to hear it from you”
“I’ve been sleeping with my press secretary for a couple of months now”
He takes a sip “Why?”
“I’ve had feelings for her since college I know I shouldn’t have done it while I was with Becca”
“You’re damn right you shouldn’t have!” He walks up to him “She told me about you wanting to divorce her”
“Sir I’ve had that way before I was sleeping with her me and Becca can’t be compatible we fight all the time”
“You can’t divorce now everything we’ve built up together to get you to where you are today”
Chris rolls his eyes “Yeah I know you and Becca have been holding that over my head for so many years”
“Because it’s true you need the two of us to make you mayor again if you listen to us”
“I’m sick of this! I don’t need either of you!”
“Chris we made you and you think you can get far without my connections and all the help we’ve given us you’re nothing without us!”
“I rather be nothing than be your pawn I want nothing to do with the two of you!” Chris walks to the door
“You walk out that door and I’ll expose you you’re not gonna win the election you’ll be on the streets or working at a convenience store!”
“That’s just fine with me!” Chris slams the door “Jerk” He runs his hands through his hair “I don’t care anymore even if I don’t win I can still be with Emily that’s all that matters to me”
****
Emily sighs as she looks at her phone Nothing yet please let Chris be alright There’s a knock on her door and Emily goes to answer it she smiles “Chris”
“Hi”
She steps aside to let him in “What happened? I’ve been worried about you”
“Well Becca ruined my stuff and both her and her dad threatened to ruin my campaign”
“Oh Chris I’m sorry I didn’t mean to”
Chris smiles “Hey look at me it’s worth it long as I have you it’s worth it nothing is your fault don’t feel bad let them do their worse”
“You sure Chris?
“Positive I love you Emily”
Emily smiles “I love you too Chris”
He kisses her deeply then pulls away “Now I know I have to leave the house do you mind if I stay here for a while I need to find an apartment”
Emily smiles “Of course and I’ll help you out”
“Thanks Em you’re the best”
Chris’s phone buzzes in his pocket he frowns as he looks at it “Great”
“What happened?”
Chris hands her the phone “They’ve already started”
Emily looks at the article headline
Mayor Chris Powell is an unfaithful husband How will this affect his reelection?

I’m feeling nostalgic lately, especially being back on here and playing Choices again. Thinking I’m gonna replay some old books just because and revisit some of my very first fictional lovers, like Drake and Zig. Sigh… 😌

I believe Endless Summer’s success was largely due to its large quantity of lovable characters. Simultaneously, I blame The Freshman+ series’s decline on its large quantity of characters.
The Freshman+ series consists of the main character, her five love interests, Zack, Abbie, Tyler, and occasionally some side characters who take on larger roles like Madison, Sebastian, and Gabriela to name just a few.
The characters were all fleshed out with their own personalities, goals, motivations, and histories. The series declined the most during The Sophomore where there were like 10 (yes, 10) different subplots at once and no actual main plot to be found. There was just no clean way to navigate all the subplots, and you could kind of tell the writers were a little lost in the sauce, too.
Endless Summer’s main character roster was large, consisting of the Twelve Catalysts, Lila, and Varyyn (and I guess Kele in book three but he didn’t do shit). That’s a lot of freaking characters! And even more impressive, every single one of them (barring Kele) had important backstories that deeply impacted who they were as characters, how they behaved, and what they prioritized while stuck on La Huerta.
However, even with all these characters and backstories and motivations, they kept the main plot in focus: survive, find a way off the island, and eventually stop Rourke. There were occasional subplots, like the Sean vs. Jake feud or the journey to save Quinn’s life, but they always tied to the main plot in some way.
So to summarize, The Freshman+’s large array of characters was its weakness while Endless Summer’s was its strength.

Not to be dramatic but I lowkey hate this type of post. This is some revisionist history for real because no era was all good or all bad for Taylor. She was happy and sad and healing and drowning and finding herself and failing ALL AT THE SAME TIME. And that’s called living a life. Yet you ask a certain brand of swiftie and she was absolutely on the ground miserable in every OG era all the time I am TIRED.
Also sometimes an album cover or back cover photo is chosen simply because it looks fucking cool. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk

hi everyone! it's been a few years since i played Choices consistently and now i've just got back into it, the last time I did, I was so into Open Heart and stopped playing The Freshman Series completely, I think I stopped around The Sophomore? because I thought it was getting boring. Little did I know, with all these smut books coming out, The Freshman Series is actually pretty intriguing. I miss books that don't revolve around an LI. I miss books that have free cute outfits. I miss books that don't make you miserable if you don't spend diamonds (this I can only say about the earlier TF series). the writing in Surrender.. it's just.. bad. brain rot. even The Nanny Affair was better and I thought thag was PB's lowest point. right now i'm only up to The Junior! and also playing The Unexpected Heiress?? & Crimes of Passion. all three are cool so far.

TF&TS Meta: Level 7 Ghostslayer
Surprise! A meta post and a WIP Wednesday! As mentioned in the other post, I didn’t have a WIP scene ready last week that wasn’t super spoilery, so I waited for this week. Now that I’m here, I should have just posted this one last week to swap them, but it just didn’t occur to me for some reason. Next time!
This post goes over Molly’s Level 7 progress.
See the directory for other meta posts.
7th level is pretty fun. The hemocraft die, proficiency bonus, and number of blood curses don’t change, but there’s some flavorful class stuff going on.
As mentioned in the Chapter 8 commentary, Molly obtained an Amulet of Health, which bumped his CON modifier to +4 (from +2) and gave him +12 health, totaling 81. I rolled a 6 on the hit die for the level up, then added +4 from CON and +2 from Tough, bringing him to 93 now. Still way higher than the rest of the Nein, and as the yuan-ti abomination demonstrated, he needs it because he keeps running headlong into melee as fast as he can.
At 7th level, blood hunters get a Crimson Rite Improvement, which is just learning one additional rite. Molly already knew the Rite of the Frozen (cold damage), so he had the choice of Rite of the Flame (fire) or Rite of the Storm (lightning). I did lean Storm at first because that would match Yasha, but considering that the level up occurred right after the fight with the hydra, I figured Molly would favor Flame. Plus there’s the elemental compliment of having both fire and ice; Molly would totally dig that. That’s before considering any feelings he’s been handwaving away about Caleb.
In addition, Ghostslayers get Aether Walk:
Upon reaching 7th level, at the start of your turn, you can magically step into the veil between the planes as long as you aren’t incapacitated. You can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain, as well as see and affect creatures and objects on the Ethereal Plane. You take 1d10 force damage if you end your turn inside an object. This feature lasts for a number of rounds equal to your Hemocraft modifier (minimum of 1 round). If you are inside an object when it ends, you are immediately shunted to the nearest unoccupied space and you take force damage equal to twice the number of feet you moved. Once you use this feature, you must finish a short or long rest before you can use it again. You can use Aether Walk twice between rests starting at 15th level.
Or, as Molly understands it, this is the bit he read (had read to him) in Zadash’s Cobalt Soul Archive about certain blood magicians being able to fly. Molly’s hemocraft modifier is WIS at +3, so he can do it for 3 rounds (18 seconds). His speed is 30, so he can go through 15 feet through solid objects per round (30 if dashing), up to 45 feet across 3 rounds (90 if dashing). Aether Walk is not an action, just an effect at the start of a round, so there’s nothing to dock for that.
Here’s the thing: I found a tweet from February 2021 where Matt said that blood hunters could attack and be attacked during Aether Walk. The ability just added that they could pass through solid objects and creatures. So I know that, in the stream, that’s how he would have ruled for Molly. If not for that tweet, I would have read the rule to mean that blood hunters couldn’t do that. Since I don’t really have a separate place to parse that, let’s dig in.
The Ethereal Plane is funky because it’s a plane between planes, similar to the Astral Sea, and like the Astral Sea’s pools acting as portals to other planes, the Ethereal has curtains with the same effect. Unlike the Astral Sea, there’s a Border Ethereal (which overlaps with other planes) and a Deep Ethereal, which is its own Plane separate from the others and hosting those curtains. Etherealness is a 7th level spell, one level below Plane Shift, that sends the target/caster to the Border Ethereal (as does the Potion of Etherealness), though they can see the plane they had been in originally when it was cast. They are also invisible to creatures from that original plane. However, the limitation of that spell is that the target can only interact with objects and creatures in the Ethereal Plane (without specifying Border vs. Deep). In comparison, while in the Deep Ethereal, creatures can’t see into the other planes because they’re truly in a single plane. Thus, the Border Ethereal is a limited overlap between two planes. In addition, the Ethereal (both kinds) doesn’t have gravity. There is no floor. It’s an ocean of fog.
Aether Walk is not the same thing as Etherealness. However, it doesn’t specify that the “veil between the planes” is actually the Border Ethereal; I just assume it is because the player can interact with stuff on the Ethereal Plane. The Border Ethereal at least makes more sense than the Deep Ethereal. The ability also doesn’t say anything about invisibility, so the player is also visible to creatures on both planes.
One thing I further homebrewed for this was gravity. The ability text makes no mention of this, but I felt that it had to be possible for Ghostslayers to ignore gravity because otherwise how would a character be able to move through a solid wall over the course of multiple rounds? Theoretically, passing through a massive solid object/space would be possible if there was some way to continue moving within the object. If the key benefit of the ability is to be able to pass through solid objects, I think Matt would have allowed a Ghostslayer to pass through thicker areas (still at half-speed and taking damage for each turn inside). But, logically, a Ghostslayer isn’t going to be able to power through rock via physical force, so there has to be some reliance on ignoring the physical forces of the world they were in before they used Aether Walk and simply moving at will. But if a Ghostslayer can ignore the force of objects enough to move through them, nothing would stop them from sinking down. Thus, to be able to pass through a thicker wall of solid material, the Ghostslayer should be able to ignore gravity and continue in a straight line without worrying that gravity is pulling them down while they pass through. That would add a needless layer of planning difficulty, especially because the player is already moving through difficult terrain. We can presume that the difficult terrain accounts for that effort of ignoring gravity.
And if Ghostslayers can ignore gravity during Aether Walk through solid objects, that means they should be able to even when they’re not passing through an object. However, to ensure it’s not more powerful than Etherealness, movement up or down costs 1 extra foot of movement per foot traveled. So it’s like difficult terrain moving up/down or through solid objects, but normal speed moving horizontally otherwise. Thus, my story includes some bits about it allowing Ghostslayers to fly… if they even think to do that.
Another issue is that Matt’s tweet says that blood hunters can attack and be attacked by creatures/objects in both planes—which necessitates that they can interact with creatures/objects in both planes. At least, it has to be so to a degree that isn’t entirely fleshed out. After all, this has to account for weapons and unarmed strikes, as well as grapples and shoves (which are considered a type of attack). So it’s not complete intangibility. While most people really don’t need to address this apparent discrepancy, I needed a way for this make sense for plot purposes.
Thus, the question became: how do I reconcile the ability to move through solid objects and creatures with the understanding that the character can get hit by an attack?
Answer: non-newtonian fluids. Okay, that’s not actually the answer on its own, but it demonstrates my thinking well enough.
My idea is that the character does step into the Border Ethereal, but in a “flawed” manner; it’s like they’re halfway into the Border Ethereal. Just enough to be affected by both planes while benefiting from the lack of gravity in the Ethereal, but also enough that they can try to pass through solid objects in the original plane. So the Ghostslayer becomes quasi-dilatant: they become more solid in their original plane as the pressure from that plane increases. So, if they get attacked (strong force), that area solidifies and take the damage. But if they push through an object with difficult terrain slowing them down (weak force), they can pass through. Given that they take force damage if they’re inside a solid object at the end of their turn, but aren’t shunted unless they end the Aether Walk in an object, that seems consistent. That would also account for why grapples and shoves would still be useless: a Ghostslayer might be grabbed/moved by the initial burst of force from the attacker, but they could pass through the attacker on their turn, and they can ignore the gravity if the attempt was to shove them prone instead of back.
All that was a long-winded way of saying that Ghostslayers are still just ghost-lite. They don’t get full etherealness like a ghost, which makes sense, because even with a much shorter duration, giving a 7th level character the benefit of a 7th level spell on demand would be a lot.
Why does all that matter? Well, you’ll see. :)

A Very Merry Christmas
Tumblr media
Chris slowly opened his eyes and smiles as he sees the snow falling on the ground then he looks around confused What time is it? He grabs his phone then his eyes go wide “Shit!” He throws off the covers and heads downstairs. He sees his wife Sarah playing with their 2 year old daughter Hailey
“What sound do frogs make Hailey”
“Boo!”
Sarah laughs “Ribbet not boo”
“Booibet!”
Sarah laughs harder “You’ll get it eventually” She looks up and sees Chris watching them “Oh you’re finally awake good morning sleeping beauty”
Hailey stands as she walks to him “Dada!”
Chris smiles and picks her up “Hi princess” He kisses her cheek then he sighs “I overslept and forgot didn’t I?”
Sarah stands “That you did but don’t worry it’s all done” She points to the dinner table filled with food
“I’m sorry baby”
“I told you not to spend the night watching those Christmas movies” She playfully smacks him
Chris chuckles a holds up a hand in surrender “Ok ok this is my fault I know” He smiles “But you did a good job baby”
“Yup and just in time too soon all our guest will arrive to celebrate Christmas with us”
“Who’s coming again baby?”
“Well my family and your family”
“That’s it? I expected more people”
Sarah laughs “You’re probably so used to all the college parties we used to have”
Chris chuckles “Guess it still hasn’t worn off”
Hailey fusses “Food!”
Chris smiles “You want to eat cutie? Before everyone else”
“Hungrwy!”
Chris chuckles “Ok baby let’s go make you some food”
Sarah smiles as she follow them into the kitchen Chris warms up Hailey’s plate and sits her in her chair “There you go”
Hailey slowly digs her hand into the food then grins “Yummy”
“Yes it’s yummy”
Hailey claps her hands and continues to dig into her food
Chris whispers “I have something for you beautiful”
Sarah blushes “You didn’t have to get me anything Chris”
“But I wanted to” He kisses her cheek “Wait here”
He heads down to the basement then comes back up with a wrapped gift “Here you go”
Sarah smiles as she unwraps the gift and opens the small rectangular box her eyes go wide at the Cuban link necklace “Chris…”
“That’s for you baby”
Sarah grins and throws her arms around him “Chris thank you” She pulls away with tears in her eyes “This is beautiful baby”
“I’m glad you love it here let me help you put in on” Chris takes the necklace out and stands behind her
“Chris this must have been expensive how did you get this?”
Chris smiles as he fastens the necklace “Do you like it?”
“I love it but”
“Then that’s all that matters” He kisses her cheek “It’s looks amazing on you”
Sarah goes to look at herself in the mirror then throws her arms around him “Thank you Chris I love you”
“I love you too baby”
Sarah smiles “I have something for you too” She steps out the room and returns with a small gift
Chris smiles as he takes the package and opens it and looks confused “Babe this is my jersey”
Sarah giggles “Look closer Chris”
Chris looks and his eyes got wide when he sees the signatures on it “No way”
Sarah grins “Yup all the Dallas Cowboys signed it”
Chris’s jaw drops as he looks from her to the jersey then back at her again “How the hell did you?”
“My dad has a friend who works with the team he went to go visit him I had him bring you’re jersey so they can sign it”
Chris quickly puts it on then let’s out a joyful laughter as he picks her up and spins her around
“Chris! Put me down!”
Chris laughs as he sets her down and kisses her deeply he pulls away then rests his forehead “I love you baby thank you so much”
“Anything for you Chris and I love you too”
“Finish!”
Chris smiles as he walks over to her “Good girl you ate all your breakfast”
Hailey reaches out with her hands “Up!”
Chris chuckles as he lifts her up out the chair as Sarah takes her plate “You want juice?”
Hailey nods “Ya”
Sarah smiles as she hands her the juice Chris smiles as her wraps an arm around her waist pulling her closer “You know gifts are nice but this is the best gift right here my two favorite girls”
Sarah smiles “Merry Christmas Chris”
“Merry Christmas my love”

I’m playing through The Senior again and I’m at the part where the main character breaks up with her love interest (if she’s dating one).
The writers do such a spectacular job showing the grief, the anguish, the pure, unrestrained emotion of the breakup. The way my MC and Zig shared a tight, heartbroken hug felt so final, like it was truly the end.
The way Zig offered her a wobbly smile with a veil of tears in his eyes, telling her goodbye as best he can while they try not to fall to pieces in front of each other because they know it’s for the best, felt so raw and stirring. Almost as if the writers themselves experienced this very instance of heartbreak and regret.
The way the MC calls her dad in tears because she’s too devastated to drive, prompting him to get there to pick her up as fast as he can to comfort her feels so real. So human.
These emotions, these beautiful, sorrowful feelings captured in the writing, are so jarringly genuine. You feel for the MC and her significant other because years of love, years of laughter at each other’s jokes and stories, years of mutual support and respect, years of nights spent snuggled up cozy and warm against each other, have just come to an abrupt end because they’re two dreamers whose dreams have led them in different directions.
And that, dear friends, is the most moving, genuine, poignant instance of interpersonal conflict in Choices.
