“We broke up on April Fool's day, so I took it as a joke. I'm willing to humor her for a month. Every day I buy a can of pineapple with an expiration date of May 1st. May loves pineapple, and May 1st is my birthday. I tell myself that if May hasn't come back by the time I've bought 30 cans, then our love will expire too.”

I am in love.
For some reason Pinterest keeps on suggesting aesthetically pleasing movie posters to me. At some point there was one called "Chungking Express" that caught my eye while I was practising sketching. Anyways! Skip to about two months later: I am visiting extended family and we are in the middle of deciding what to watch.
Guys, either this movie or the makers are my new favorite. Or both.

Idols who I envision in the Wong Kar-wai cinematic universe
exhibit 1- Jake as He Qiwu in Chungking Express
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Whipped, a hopeless romantic, extremely poetic when he's coping
-Lowkey loser vibes since he gets stuck over someone for a long time due to his naivety
-Poor boy just wants to be loved, at the root of which is loneliness, and attachment.
"I tell myself I'll fall in love with the first woman who walks in"
-Dedicated af towards finding someone like the scene where calls his ex-classmates to move on 😭
-'the you're lonely, I'm lonely, we should date' vibes being massive ngl
-Has the dumbest/ most random pick-up lines but they'll work cause he's adorable
"Excuse me miss, do you like pineapples?" (the character repeated this in four different languages btw, which I can actually imagine Jake do)
-In some way, cares more about the present than what's to come in the future. Makes decisions with his heart.
-Pretends to be cool, but is a soft boi at heart
-did I also mention how endearing it is when he gets chatty, talking about really random things? Like he can go on rambling about nothing in particular, but it isn't really annoying. Instead it's quite comforting.

on love and sorrow
i. chungking express (1994), dir. wong kar-wai ii. accident report in the tall, tall weeds, ada limón
[id: 4 screenshots from chungking express of he qiwu buying canned pineapple in a convenience store with subtitles alternated with 3 screenshots from ada limón's poem "accident report in the tall, tall weeds." the text on each reads: "1. The day we broke up was April Fool's Day. So I kept on acting like it was a joke. I let this joke continue for a month. 2. When the plane went down in San Francisco, / I thought of my friend M. He’s obsessed with plane crashes. / He memorizes the wrecked metal details, / the clear cool skies cut by black scars of smoke. 3. Every day since the day we broke up, I bought a can of pineapples that expired on May 1st. 4. Once, while driving, he told me about all the crashes: / The one in blue Kentucky, in yellow Iowa. / How people go on, and how people don’t. / It was almost a year before I learned / that his brother was a pilot. 5. Because pineapples are May's favorite food. And May 1st is my birthday. 6. I can’t help it, / I love the way men love. 7. I told myself if she hasn't come back by the time I buy thirty cans, then this love will also expire." the colored caption reads: on love and sorrow /end id]

Final Project Preparation - Cultural Dimensions by Natalyn Wakeling
The two dimensions I found to be most applicable to the films for this course were Hofstede's Uncertainty Avoidance Index and Affective vs Neutral model from Trompenauer's dimensions. Some characters in the films either lacked uncertainty, or let it define them throughout the course of the film. As well as some characters leading by emotion while others led with logic.
The first film I am applying these models to is Room at the Top. Of these two models, I apply neutral vs affective to this film. I believe that Joe Lampton led his life more neutral, while Alice was very affective. Joe was able to forfeit his love for Alice to go be with the rich Susan Brown that he had impregnated. Alice however, took this loss of Joe very affectively, and ended up ending her own life because she saw that she had nothing to live for if it wasn't for Joe's love.
The next film I am applying the Uncertainty Avoidance Index to is Chungking Express. This Hong Kong film is revolved around two extremely avoidant characters, with two separate storylines. The first one is the cop who picks a designated day to lose all feelings for his ex girlfriend based on the expiration date of a pineapple can. He is avoiding feeling the longing he has had for her. Next is the storyline around Faye and He. Faye does not want He to know she is in love with him because he is still desperately involve with his ex. So instead of facing her feelings, she is avoidant and just takes over his home and feels connected to him in that manner. Her avoidance is also shown when she is caught, she flees to California.
For Forrest Gump, I think both models can be applied. Forrest Gump is very low on the uncertainty and avoidance scale. Forrest sees and opportunity in life and he seizes it. His football career, military, Bubba Gump Shrimp, and pursuing Jenny. In terms of Jenny and Forrests' relationship, Forrest was more affective while Jenny was neutral. He professed his love for her on multiple occasions, and Jenny was more akin to superficial relationships, and did not show Forrest she felt the same until the very end.
Lastly, in Pleasantville, I really see the affective vs neutral model displayed as a major theme. Jenny and David enter the television reality of Pleasantville, and at first all the people are very neutral, because that's how they were programmed to be in the show. However, David and Jenny being there and making certain decisions alter's these characters realities, and they become aware of all there is to the world. Love, education, and sexual relationships lead these people to having immense feelings, which is displayed through the symbolism of the black and white characters becoming displayed in color.
