Claire Upset with Carmy vs. Sydney Upset with Carmy and How He Responds to Them - 2x03 "Sundae"

I feel overwhelmed by how many parallels Storer and Co. drew between Sydney and Claire and their respective relationships to Carmy in this season. Not only do the parallels serve to show Carmy's attachment to the past and his reluctance to join the present, but it also serves to contrast the way Carmy shows up for the people he cares about, more specifically how he shows up for the women he has feelings for. I think it's not only interesting how Carmy goes about showing up for both Claire and Sydney, but also how the women respond when they try to hold him accountable.

At the beginning of "Sundae", right after Carmy sends Sydney out so they can go have their palate cleanser at Kasama, Claire calls him. She is pissed off that he gave her a fake number, starting off the conversation with "Should my feelings be hurt? I think they're hurt." Her tone of voice is confrontationally upset while also carrying an air of trying to be sarcastically jokey, and it's affect is immediate on Carmy. He's tensed up, stuttering out an apology, immediately lying and claiming it was a mistake. He's not comfortable off the bat with the conversation and hunkers down on the lie when she continues to push him for answers. She also mentioned twice that she could have the Faks come and beat him up for giving her a fake number. It's a pretty awkward moment, not just because of how awkward Carmy is but because of how cornered he appears.

Carmy clams up when faced with Claire's anger and pressuring questions. When he agrees to help her move the furniture, it's not instant. He knows he has other obligations. But I think he felt some sort of obligation in that moment to make it up to Claire for giving her a fake number. And that's where we get him blowing off Sydney for the rest of the day.

Towards the end of the episode, after spending the day alone and unsuccessfully trying to reach Carmy all day, Sydney arrives at the restaurant and is surprised to find Carmy there. Then she finds out that the crew, with Carmy's knowledge and help, knocked down walls without calling her. She's not outwardly confrontational about the decision, but Carmy calls out her weighted silence. What's more, surprisingly, he pushes for her to tell him what's wrong. He asks what he could have done differently, and makes sure to let her know that he will do better to keep her updated. To have better communication with her.

Sydney is not the one pursuing answers in this situation, even though she has every right to. She is his partner in this business that they are building together, and she was left out of a fairly big decision. Instead of lying, instead of dodging her, instead of simply trying to quickly pacify her, Carmy explains why he did what he did without prompting, and he stands on it. I don't think that is irrelevant to this comparison. He was so avoidant with Claire and could easily have been with Sydney, but he made sure to tell her what he did and even promised to be better at communicating with her, unlike he did with Claire.

This whole parallel between Sydney and Claire revolves around communication and who Carmy feels more comfortable communicating with. Who he feels more comfortable taking accountability with. Who he's more willing to change for.

Sydney and Carmy like each other. They understand that building a relationship, whatever this relationship is between them, requires giving each other undivided attention. It's not just about opening up a business together but also paying attention to the little things, like Carmy's dislike for cannolis or Sydney's dislike of condolences, or that Sydney wants a Chef Coat. It's an instinct almost to know any and everything.

The slowburn is watching Syd and Carmy as they unravel why they have a strong desire to know each other.

AU where Claire is secretly (part) Akiridion?

Great AU idea!

This is sort of a head canon for the AU, but also sort of just an observation, but have you thought about the fact that Akiridion-5 has a MASSIVE standing army? And an incredibly developed military industrial complex? Kind of implies that they are or were a imperial super power in their corner of the galaxy.

Claire's Akiridion mother was a refugee hiding from the rest of her people for reasons revealed later, but she eventually finds herself on Earth. She knows that forces from A-5 are hunting her and she doesn't want her infant daughter to get hurt. So she hides her core in the body of a human infant, Claire Nunez.

She does a more thorough job of hiding Claire's Akiridion form because she had more time and her ship was undamaged. So Claire and her human family is fully unaware she's part Akiridion. Except her mother implanted a memory and hid what is effectively a time capsule with more info about A-5, Claire's heritage and gives her the ability to switch back and forth.

Claire's mother than leaves Earth and is eventually tracked down. She chooses to detonate her ship so no one can track Claire down. she beams a message back to earth as her final fairwell to Claire in which its implied that the person hunting her mother is Morando.

(Five ideas and it's only the intro!) Claire has this memory that there is something important for when she is in a desperate need, but doesn't do anything with it until Jim goes into the Dark Lands. Then she finds the capsule, sees her mother's message, and unlocks her Akiridion form.

Didn’t know this was an unpopular opinion, but have seen enough meta discussion to think it might be? So here are my two cents about it: I don’t think they would ever make Sydney not reciprocate Carmy or straight up reject him. Because:

1. Have you seen the way she interacts with Carmy instead of, let’s say, Marcus? Especially this season. It’s clear they constructed a one way street between Marcus and Sydney. Marcus was seeing something Sydney wasn’t, and that’s clear in their interactions. But, instead, we get a lot of moments of connection between Carmy and Sydney. Both of them. And a sense of reliability from Sydney that shows she cares for their partnership and FOR him. Like Carmy was shitty to her all throughout, but Syd still replied softly to him that he wasn’t alone either. Not to even mention the famous under the table scene, which wasn’t just Carmy talking softly to her, it was Syd being vulnerable to him, by choice. I do think she is way more subtle in the way she cares for Carmy, and might find it harder to pick up clues of her feelings or/and to express them, but i don’t think this should negate her feelings completely. Like, Sydney is Carmy’s biggest fan, and has been since day one. And that also makes it hard to think she would have a similar reaction to the one she had with Marcus to any proposition or confession by Carmy. Which leads me to my second and most important point.

2. We have already seen the one way street storyline between Sydney and Marcus. She already rejected him, when he tried to move things forward. The writers doing exactly the same with Sydney rejecting Carmy would not only be repetitive and boring, but also would set a pattern for Sydney’s character that wouldn’t benefit her much. She would seem deattached and senseless. Especially because we wouldn’t have a justification for her rejecting two people she is so close to, further than an inability to form a deeper connection… with anyone… and that’s not the Sydney the writers are constructing. Like, one time is okay, especially if we see it’s clear one of the two was seeing more than what it was. But two times? When all we have seen is they both being obsessed about each other? Unless they turned it around completely next season… but even that would seem out of character seeing how much shit Sydney endured from Carmy this season and still followed him.

So, I have no idea where they are taking the story and the characters next… but if they were ever to explore a relationship between Carmy and Sydney that goes beyond platonic I don’t think the Sydney rejecting Carmy plot would make much sense tbh

Such an exciting moment for Victor. Don't worry, Farmer, he will organise everything. I think they'll start in a month.

Lance:

*Chuckle* "What a coincidence, I just wanted to discuss this with you." Lance had been thinking about having a baby for a while now, but first the adventurer wanted to talk about his and Farmer's time management. After all, the baby would need all of parents' attention, and with the adventurer's responsibilities (Farmer + their basic farming duties) that could be problematic. However, when Farmer and Lance have discussed important questions, the pink-haired man will smile genuinely at Farmer and shower them with kisses. And then picks Farmer up in his arms and carries them to the bedroom, "to do his conjugal duty."

Sophia:

"Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep?! Wait, no- I mean yes! I want kids! I mean... Right now?" Poor Sophia, she's red as a tomato, the question caught her off guard. In fact, she had been thinking about becoming a mum for a long time, but couldn't bring herself to bring it up with Farmer. But her spouse was ahead of the uncertain girl. The preparation itself will not begin immediately - the girl wants to anticipate everything. Special books and courses on what to do during pregnancy/what documents to prepare for adoption, prepare the house, prepare herself... It will take several months for sure, because Sophia takes it very seriously, and even though she is worried, the pink-haired girl knows that with her beloved Farmer they can do anything.

Claire:

"Kids? Oh, I don't even know..." Don't get Claire wrong - she would love to be a mother. It's just that weddings, fitting into a new community, moving to the farm and adapting to a new life - Claire is just getting used to it, and wouldn't want to rush things. And the ballet fan is very grateful that her spouse turned out to be an understanding person. In her spare time, Claire will be watching videos on the internet or reading articles useful for parents. For now, Claire and Farmer will slowly but surely prepare the house for a new family member, and in about six months she is ready to conceive a child/sign all the adoption papers.

Olivia:

Olivia knows exactly what to do when having a baby. After all, she'd already raised one child, her precious son, and she still remembered the right way to start. Only Olivia didn't know if her Farmer would share the idea of having children, but she's happy that Farmer was the first to broach the subject. In the case of pregnancy, they'd get started right away. If the case of adoption, that wise woman would first study what documents are needed to draw up the adoption so that there are no problems later in the process. Olivia won't forget to share funny stories from Victor's childhood, which will have wisdom and advice for Farmer as a future parent. How excited she is, very excited!
