what scents do they enjoy? (either to wear or for things like candles or incense) nothing in particular as far as candles or perfumes go but very much drawn to the smells of nature (double-edged sword as the damp humidity of the palace greenhouse becomes synonymous with home to her and she enjoys sweltering summer days for similar reasons. the dark stale air of its underground passages however.... reminiscent of a different home. h) also extreme shoutout to the smell of wet earth during heavy downpours...... probably her strongest scent association that can swing either way depending on the day.

Do you know anything about pre-colonial ilokano culture? Like any practices, myths etc :)

Precolonial Ilokano culture has also been on my radar especially since I myself am of Ilokano descent actually! My ties to the culture had been severed by my Ilokano grandfather after a falling out with his family, but I might be able to get together some sources and articles on precolonial Ilocos some other time.

One of the most popular myths from the Ilokos region that is often taught in schools even outside the area is the Life of Lam-Ang or Biag ni Lam-Ang. This story follows Lam-Ang and different parts of his life from before his birth and up to his peaceful life after all of his adventures. You can read it here alongside a collection of other epics from other Filipino ethnic groups and an English translation here (thanks to a Christian school's English class lol)

From quick research, an article by Jordan Clark of the Aswang Project lists the 1978 book Handbook of Philippine Language Groups as source for knowing the early Ilokano pantheon or at least the generally accepted Ilokano pantheon.

This book identifies Buni as the supreme being of the pantheon, who, from other sources I've seen, is often referenced as someone who has tasked the giants with creation. I can't seem to find the specific myth that exactly references how the world had come to be. Parsua was also identified as a creation deity.

Then there are the deities related to different nature-related and weather-related things which are listed as Apo Langit (Lord Heaven), Apo Angin (Lord Wind), Apo Init (Lord Sun), and Apo Tudo (Lord Rain).

There are also variations listed within the article that had been referenced to have come from the book published in 1952 called the Historical and Cultural Data of Provinces specifically from Vigan, Ilocos Sur, although it seems to have more outsider influence.

Here's the plain-text from the article since it's pretty difficult to find other sources of this myth other than the book and the article:

Cabalangegan was formerly a jungle at the edge of the river Abra. On the far side of the river were mountains high and steep. On these mountains lived an old man named Abra, the father of Caburayan. The old man lived and controlled the weather. It is said that the river Abra was a gathering of water vapor, shaded, and the days were always bright with sunlight. At that time Anianihan, God of Harvests, was in love with Anianihan, Goddess of Healing. Her mother, Lady Makiling knew about their mutual understanding, but Abra did not know it for the three were afraid to tell him since he might punish them as he disapproved of Anianihan. Abra wanted his daughter to marry either Saguday, God of the Wind, or Revenador, God of Thunder and Lightning. This being so, Anianihan took Caburayan from her home. Abra wept a great deal. He sent Lady Makiling away after beating her. When Abra was alone, he wept day and night till Bulan, God of Peace and Calm, came. But though Bulan was there to brighten Abra’s spirits, Abra did not stop weeping. He could not express his anger. He begged the other gods to bring back his daughter. One day the sun, eye of Amman, shone so bright that the water of the river Abra was excessively heated. Smoke rose from the river. Soon, thick, black clouds began to darken the sky. Then Saguday sent the strongest wind until the crowns of the trees brushed the ground. The god Revenador sent down the largest strings of fire. The heaviest of rains fell. All these frightful events lasted seven days. The river Abra then rose and covered the trees. There rose a vast body of water and the highest part of the mountain could be seen. It looked like the back of a turtle from a distance. At this spot Abra lived. On the seventh day, Abra heard a cry. He also heard a most sorrowful song. Abra dried his tears and looked around, but he saw no one. He determined to find Maria Makiling, his grandchild. He did not find her for the cries of the baby had stopped. The search for the baby lasted three full moons, but to no avail and the poor old man returned to his home very sad. He lost all hope. His wits were gone. At that time Maria Makiling was under the care of the fierce dog Lobo, that was under a god of the Underworld. He had been punished by the other gods and that is why he looked like a fierce dog. He was sent down to do charity.

From just the story alone, there's some obvious influences from other cultures such as one of the deities mentioned, Lady Makiling, the mother of Caburayan, having come from Laguna, as well as the usage of the word Lobo to name a fierce dog with the word having come from Spanish.

This may be the reason why this myth isn't regarded as highly as a more authentic version of the precolonial Ilocano pantheon although it is an interesting story still.

I do want to learn more about Ilocano precolonial culture too but that's all I have for now! Hopefully it's informative enough especially since finding sources outside the Aswang Project website is rather difficult.

NAŠA SVETLOST I SENKA

Po Jungu čovek nosi u sebi personu, deo ličnosti, koja hoće da se istakne, i senku, deo ličnosti, koja hoće da se prikrije. Smatra se da u zrelom dobu, čovek želi da uobliči svoje JA, da bude ono što zaista jeste. Ne znam da li ovo dobro razumem, ali ja sam nekako uvek želela, sada naročito, da budem ono što jesam, bez ikakvog kalkulisanja, i da to “sopstvo” pokazujem i u komunikaciji sa drugima. Naravno da znam da treba uložiti veliki napor da bi nam se naš “moralni” odraz dopao u nekom životnom ogledalu. Svesna sam i dvojnosti čovekove prirode, zla i dobra (već sam pisala o tome!). Biti banalan, zao, neosetljiv i neodgovoran je uvek lakše, jer za to uvek postoji prečica do cilja. Put dobra je mnogo teži, duži, neravniji i, pre svega, usamljenički. To je put na kome se često posrće i koji traži ogromnu duhovnu, a, bogami, i fizičku snagu.

U životu nam je nametnuto da se moramo opredeljivati, izabrati neku poziciju za “opštenje” sa drugim ljudima. Smatram da svaki čovek treba da bira svoj način bitisanja, u skladu sa onim što nosi u sebi i šta želi od života, a ne da prihvata nametnutu sudbinu. Veliki Crnjanski je rekao da je život neka vrsta pozornice na kojoj svako od nas ima svoju ulogu, a kad je odigra odlazi sa scene da se više nikad ne vrati na nju. Nažalost, mnogi ovu misao shvataju krajnje proizvoljno, van konteksta, misleći da svako od nas treba da “igra” neku ulogu pred drugima u skladu sa ciljem koji treba da ostvari. Iskrenost je nepoželjna kategorija. Nepoželjno je pokazati i ranjivost, emotivnu ili bilo koju drugu, iz straha da se ona ne bi zloupotrebila. Često se i citiraju narodne “mudrosti”, gde se iskrenost poistovećuju sa naivnošću i glupošću (da ih ne citiram, nisam baš ponosna na ovakve naše “umotvorine”!) Ovi “drugi”, naoružani bezosećajnošću (u stilu što te manje emotivno “dodiruju” ljudi, to si “jači”), cinizmom prikrivaju sopstvenu beznačajnost, nesposobnost da se svet sagleda kompleksnije.

Da bismo bili manje ranjivi ili zaštićeni od “emotivnih” povreda sugeriše nam se razvijanje neke strategije, kao za borbu s neprijateljem. Ako imate nekih osećaja za nekoga ili za nešto, nipošto ne pokazujte, jer vas to, umesto da vas “preporučuje” kao ličnost, čini “naivnim”, “zgodnim” za manipulaciju. Naravno, sve u meni se buni protiv “glume u životu” i pravljene strategije za odnose sa drugim ljudima.

U čemu je smisao života? Da budete uvek nešto drugo, da oni nedostojni vas ne “otkriju” važu ranjivost. Meni je, upravo, izazov da budem ono što jesam: jaka, kad to jesam, ranjiva i emotivna, kad to osećam,a ko odluči da ne laže, pre svega sebe,a potom i druge, prepoznaće ono što smatram najvrednijim u čoveku - da bude ono što jeste, otvoren za druge, a opet drukčiji od njih, svoju senku.

Naravno, imamo i svoju senku, nešto što je naše, intimno i što nemamo potrebu da pokazujemo drugimo. Ali, to nema veze sa “glumom” i predstavljanjem sebe drugačijim nego što jesmo, jer svi naši nesporazumi sa drugim ljudima potiču od pogrešne predstave o sebi: ili se “vidimo” većim nego što jesmo (da ne govorimo o “mitomanima”, koji, na njihovu nesreću, žive u iskrivljenom svetu i imaju osobine, koje postoje samo u njihovoj glavi (bilo bi dobro pročitati odličnu pripovetku I. Andrića: Zlostavljanje!), ili se potcenjujemo i u svakom vidimo neprijatelja ili potencijalnu opasnost za sebe

Salut! Ma întreb dacă acel anon și toți cei care se plâng pentru că Jungkook fumează și ce efect are asupra tinerilor din fandom au aceeasi părere despre toate celebritățile americane care se droghează. Din câte înțeleg americanii au avut o campanie mare împotriva fimatului și se vede pentru că fac atâta tantam din asta, dar cu drogurile (care din cunoștințele mele pot să aibă efecte mult mai grave decât fumatul) sunt ok. Și cu alcolul dacă tot veni vorba. BTS au băut alcool de multe ori live și totuși nimeni nu e îngrojorat că adolescenții o să înceapă să bea alcool din vina lor.

Cred că e o chestie culturală. Fumatul e comun în România ca și în Coreea de Sud. Și fratele meu a început să fumeze ca adolescent, tatăl meu fumează, mama mea fuma mai demult etc.

Asa că din perspectiva mea ca româncă îmi e greu să înțeleg ce e așa mare scofală.

Imaginează-ți dacă fanii celebrităților române are avea astfel de reacții. Eu una nu pot, mă bufnește râsul. Că tot ziceam de vedetele de la noi, de când am devenit fană kpop și am început să mai citesc pe ici pe colo despre vedetele americane mi-am dat seama că showbizul românesc e un mare circ cum nu prea vezi la alții. Chiar am gasit niște postări pe Reddit făcute de un român pentru străini despre Becali și OTV și manele.

Sunt ipocriti majoritatea, tu ce crezi? Plus ca am impresia ca nu au capacitatea de a intelege ca opiniile astea vin de undeva, e un mesaj la nivel societal produs cu un anumit scop. Chiar nu e asa greu de inteles daca iti pui mintea la contributie, dar din experienta pe care am avut-o si eu personal si din ce texte citesc pe social media, oamenii astia au o gandire foarte ingusta si rigida. Nu pot privi dincolo de universul mic in care ei traiesc si au impresia ca ala e normalul, desi e un concept lipsit de sens.

Nu zic ca trebuie laudat orice obicei care ajunge sa faca parte din cultura sociala a unei tari, dar in cazul asta cu fumatul mi se pare absurd. In general nu sunt de acord cu parerile oferite asa, fara sa fie cerute. Sa ma ia pe mine la rost un strain ca de ce fumez ar fi neobisnuit din cale afara, as ramane proasta. Si mai e ceva, ca toti vorbesc de sanatate. Au impresia ca fumatorii sunt toti oameni idioti care habar nu au de riscuri. Atitudinea asta de superioritate ma da pe spate, mai ales ca majoritatea dintre noi avem vicii de toate felurile, mai mult sau mai putin acceptate.

Evident ca n-au nicio treaba cu alcoolul pentru ca nu exista campanii impotriva lui si nu e condamnat la nivel societal. Dar cati nu mor din cauza la ciroza, de exemplu. Cum ziceam, minte ingusta.

De cand am intrat in contact cu k-pop, dar mai ales fanii, simt ca fac parte dintr-un univers paralel sau ca ma intorc in timp la ora de religie din scoala. Numai acolo auzeam aceleasi tampenii puritane, dar macar in cazul ala era de asteptat. Cel mai tare imi dau seama cat e de ridicol cand uneori mentionez vreo absurditate din kpop la oameni care n-au nicio treaba cu asta si imi dau seama in timp de explic cat de fucked up e. Mai mult decat in general. Pentru ca nimeni cu scaun la cap nu s-ar preta la un comportament pe care il au fanii kpop. Cel putin fenomenul e studiat, ca altfel ar fi pacat sa se piarda.

Si ca sa ajung la ultima parte din mesajul tau, frate nu pot sa cred ca mi-au revenit toate amintirile cu showbizu romanesc. Cred ca le-am reprimat, ca uitasem tot circul de la tv. Eu nu mai urmaresc de ani buni, nici nu stiu cine e acum in prim plan, am ramas cam blocata in anii 2000 cand vine vorba de astia. Am citit postarile alea de pe reddit, nici nu pot sa-mi imaginez cum ar intelege strainii. Oricat de bine s-ar explica, you'd have to be there. Plus nuantele. Serialul Elodia a fost mai ceva ca toate telenovele la vremea aia. Si atunci nu intelegeam cum naiba nu se mai termina. Eram in scoala generala in 2007 si imi aduc aminte ca asta era subiectul principal. Si multe altele.

Si apropo, de curand mi-am adus aminte de marea telenovela de pe Acasa, Numai Iubirea. Ca jumatate din popor se uita. Cumva as baga fenomenul asta tot la absurditati din tv romanesc pentru ca tin minte cum au mediatizat si promovat o scena de viol. Nu mai tin minte numele personajului, dar Adela Popescu juca personajul, era sora cu nebuna de Zavoranu. Anyway, era ceva normalizat. Episod dat si in reluare ziua in amiaza mare cand te uiti cu bunica la televizor. De atunci am mai evoluat, cred eu, dar in acelasi timp mi-ar ajunge sa dau canalul pe pro tv la emisiunea lui Maruta ca sa vad ca tot am ramas mult in spate.

Si americanii au trash tv, dar nu cred ca se compara cu showurile care se faceau la televiziunea romana. Cum explici ca un politician era lasat sa vina in direct sa faca cele mai groaznice comentarii pline de injuraturi si sa nu existe consecinte? Sau Diaconescu aruncat in tomberon acolo in platou?
