This man made the ultimate sacrifice, If it was going to be his last, he wanted her to know he was watching ‘just in case I didn’t make it, at least I was there for her debut’ ‘unfortunately, my damage was permanent and although I survived, I feel the results of the corporate climb every day of my life’ 15 years ago, I worked part time travelling Australia and New Zealand with a company who sponsored one of the V8 Supercars. My job was exciting, I got to meet lots of different people from all over, travel, sight see, learn about a different culture and work in a team environment. We were a tight knit team who worked and socialised together. I worked with this amazing crew for 5 years. Yesterday one of them contacted me: his story is miraculous and inspiring but also a wake-up call. I remember him as the tall solid man, a little like the Rock but with silver grey hair. He was a high flyer, the man in the suit and the face of the company. He travelled more than 140 flights a year in cramped economy seats and spent majority of his work living in hotels and on the road. He worked for over 14 consecutive weeks in different cities away from his family and friends. He was dedicated to his work. Eight years ago, he developed a persistent dry cough, 14 months later he started coughing up blood. He went straight to the Doctor who sent him to have many tests done. They found damage to his lungs and initially thought it was cancer. But further testing ruled out cancer and found it could be sarcoidosis, again that was ruled out after a full body ultrasound scan. This revealed he had 2 x 14cm blood clots, one was in his heart. He had been carrying them for 14 months. It was Friday 13th June, Doctors told him he probably wouldn’t make it to his birthday in July. He was told to go straight to the hospital and admit himself immediately. J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge 2019

My first experience at the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge was in 2009 where I was a member of Team Lucasfilms in San Francisco. After a 10-year hiatus, I am finally offered the chance to participate in the 16th edition of the Corporate Challenge as part of Team Microsoft in Singapore.

After weathering the rain and thunder that threatened to dampen the festivities, the event organizers were finally given the approval from the authorities to proceed with the run. With over 12,000 runners competing in the 5.6KM challenge, tensions were high and everyone was eager to reach the starting line to begin their battle towards the top of the leader board.

Once the air horn was activated, I just ran as fast as I could, for as long as I could, while navigating through the sea of people like a pinball zigzagging through a machine filled with obstacles and pitfalls. Before I knew it, I was already at the finishing line, trying to catch my breath and a glimpse of my fellow team members.

The event organizers were prompt in announcing the race results and I am pleased to report that I achieved a new personal best of 35.21 minutes for the 5.6KM race with a pace of 6.17 min/km, shaving over 50% off my timing set in 2009. This result has certainly motivated me to try to improve myself in the next edition.

It's the eve of the Corporate Challenge in Chicago. I deferred my morning run to the evening, partly due to threat of rain, partly to help acclimate to running later in the day. Kept my 6 miles nice and chill. I've got my company shirt and the rest of my outfit planned out. Weather is looking very good. Optimistically, I can finish 3.5 miles in 19:15, which would put me in the top 20 or so. Usually the thrill of big competition inspires my best performances. I'm stoked to say the least.
