I’m currently reading The Invisible Siege: The Rise of Coronaviruses and the Search for a Cure by Dan Werb as part of my local library’s Summer Reading Program, and in the third chapter there’s the story of how Dr. Ralph Baric got into studying coronaviruses back in the early 1980′s, long before the virus family became known as a danger to humans with the SARS epidemic in the early 2000′s and longer still before the COVID pandemic. He became interested in this viral family because, by RNA virus standards, they’re enormous: bigger than any that should exist based on our knowledge of RNA viruses at the time. How very queer, right?

I would love for SARS-CoV-2 to be eradicated from the world as smallpox and rinderpest were. I would love to never even encounter its basically harmless cousins that only cause common colds again. I shiver at the fact that the pandemic is not yet over, from compassion and fear for my fellow humans and from fear for myself.

And yet, it struck me, once again, how even terrors like pathogenic coronaviruses are still, at some level or another, beautiful and marvelous pieces of our intricate biosphere. Infectious diseases have been a long-term special interest of mine, since on one level disease and poison are one of those things that terrify me the most, the thought of something being Wrong within you that you cannot see but you can feel the pain of, and on another level preferring informed terror over uninformed any day.

So, Coronaviridae... I may hate what the most famous among you is doing, but you are, after all, only a family of viruses. Giants of the RNA virus world, you are equal parts fascinating and terrifying.

Utterly irrelevant pet peeve of the day: Do people who act like socialising online and socialising in real life are the exact same thing just not realise that that is not a universal experience? Or do they realise, but somehow think that if only us folks-who-need-meatspace-interaction tried a bit harder we could make do? 'Cause the whole "person A complains about lack of socialising opportunities, person B is utterly baffled because there's the entire internet full of people, look!" is getting a bit old, tbh. Especially after many of us have been through an entire array of lockdowns and, if you paid attention, it became very clear very quickly that internet-based socialisation is far better than nothing but not anywhere near enough for a whole lot of people.

My son is doing remote learning because he has covid. We got a note on our school's app assuring us that all students, including those doing remote learning, will be given age-appropriate talks about the school shooting.

Would the me of 1999, who was in high school when Columbine happened, understand any of this? Of course not.

EDIT: ffs can y'all read the tweet and the actual article, not just the headline, it says how it's 'healthy under-50s' that they're cutting access to boosters for and eventually first and second doses. Yeah, most people who would have gotten them would have by now but there's many reasons that some people haven't and these options should still be open regardless.

This bullshit approach of taking away even the vax part of "vax and relax" is going to kill and disable people. It even quotes the fuckign health minister saying "as the transition continues away from a pandemic emergency response towards pandemic recovery". THERE IS NO RECOVERY WHEN SAID PANDEMIC IS STILL GOING!!!

and YES i know the sun is a murdoch rag that's lower quality than used toilet paper but i shared this particular tweet as a) the tweeter is a reliable and staunch anti-covid advocate and b) for once this piece of shit news source is telling the truth

finally, for those saying that this isn't a big deal as "most people are fully vaccinated", think again. Most vaccine immunity wanes after several months so defining "full vaccination" as having had a primary course nearly 2 years ago is outdated and lulling people into a false sense of security. In an ideal, science-informed, non-covid-minimiser world, we'd be having boosters every 4-6 months so that antibodies don't fall below effective levels.

Basically, this post should be a wake up call to those who haven't gotten their booster if they're eligible for it and for everyone to realise how much more fucked the approach to the pandemic is becoming. not only in the UK but everywhere else tbh

Body dearest, I thought we had talked AND EXERCISED EXTENSIVELY about this whole "occasionally your diaphragm will seize up making it feel like you can't breathe" thing, but if you're going to have to do a "best of stupid health problems you thought you'd fixed", maybe in a pandemic of a fucking respiratory disease is NOT the best timing???

(Seriously, I've done THREE fucking tests this week just cause it's making me paranoid I may have caught covid and might infect my loved ones. All negative, obviously, and I've got no fever, cough or anything. My body's just being a dick unrelatedly FOR NO GOOD REASON.)
