Holy shit. I love character analysis. 

I do this thing where I phyco-analize everyone all the time, real and fake people, and I’ve gotten good at it. But Lucien is a treat, because he is confusing. He clearly wants the threshold crest, and I do think that he is honest about a lot, but I don’t think he’s been powerless for a very long time, since he saw the city. He said that his childhood was rough, he was scorned, and it shows. He is honest, which is very smart, because the truth is much more believable than lies, and keeping your lies sparse makes them much more believable in turn. He has told the Nein a lot, but its not because he wants their trust. It’s because he wants to prove himself. He is bragging with his information, the power he has, and a mentally stable person would see that giving this information is most likely not in their best interest. But, Caduceus was right. He’s been around a lot of people who tell him yes all of the time, and he most likely lies to himself, says he like that. But the Nein, they are so very human. I don’t mean that race wise, but I’m unable to come up with a species-inclusive word which shows that. What that means is that they say what they mean, which can be dumb, which they recognize, but its at the core of their group, and they’re not about to give it up. And it would feel amazing to challenge all of the negatives in your life with this one group appreciating you, recognizing you as important, powerful. 

I think that the simple truth is that he keeps them around because he likes them there. There most likely is other factors, other reasons to have them around, but if he wanted the crest he could have it, and it would make his life easer. He hides his loneliness, his brokenness from being shattered behind a wall of confidence, and stabliblty. People hide behind whatever will make you look away from their flaws, and there is a fine line between faking it and being healthy. He acts perfect, a front too good to be true, so I would say he must feel broken. Helpless. And, Empty

I really love that Beau is getting the better of Lucien in their conversations, annoying the fuck out of him.  With Mollymauk, he started their little feud and often got the better of her because Talisen tends to be one of the more eloquent than Marisha most of the time.  Not to mention that when Mollymauk was around it was precharacter development Beau who was too nervous to really show off her strengths of character and tried to keep her ‘she’s just a thug dumb,’ attitude instead of the child prodigy from an abusive home.  

With Lucien though, Beau can just tear him to pieces because he isn’t someone she’s trying to get along with and she has developed self confidence in herself and knows her friends have her back.  She can be an asshole to him because he’s an asshole to them and it’s great.

The Terrain

If it weren’t for the “DWARVEN FORGE BATTLE CAM” label, one might think CR lost the DF sponsorship and had all their terrain repossessed. I am disappointed we didn’t get to see any rad lava and snow terrain, but it is wholly understandable. Sometimes you have to go for simplicity in the interest of fun and functionality.

The Villains

My favorite detail in this sculpt is the inclusion of furry hobbit feet. The overall model resolution could be better, but generally speaking, I enjoy the figure. Looks good on the table and I enjoy most any archer sculpt that’s not in a generic firing pose.

This Tabaxi Hunter is part of a pair of models. The alternate figure features a catgut guitar and was used in Campaign 2 Episode 1. Coincidence? Perhaps...

This is a good set of alternate minis. They are both distinct and have their own unique uses. I dig the dagger version. Reads at a distance as a tabaxi and the details are solid up close.

During the 4E era, goliaths miniatures were tough to find and those that existed were expensive. The Stonechild (a D&D 3.5 race) however was widely available for like a few bucks. This model makes for a perfect goliath! The fidelity in the sculpt is great. The paint, though flat, is clean and efficient. The pose might seem a little awkward at first, but I think the leaning look helps sell the towering height of the character and gives the sword sort of a swing wind up appearance. I used this same figure in a tournament game which ended in a TPK and with my barbarian melted in lava.

Closing Thoughts and Predictions

Now that the Wizkids Critical Role miniatures have been announced, I’m most interested to see some of those in the flesh. Should be pretty soon, given that they are due to release in just a few months. Exciting times.
