Did you or do you ever struggle writing character x reader fanfiction? I read it quite a lot but I just can't get used to writing in that format. I'm writing an OC x Homelander story, though.
I had never created an OC before, but I am certainly more comfortable writing a character that has a name, face and backstory of their own than using a generic reader. Particularly when I'm writing about the character's past and other individual characteristics, addressing the reader as you seems so weird to me. It makes me feel like I can't give in to specifics because it breaks the illusion.
Also, I've enjoyed the act of creating an OC. Giving them a name, a story, motivations, designing their psychology, etc.
However, I find it discouraging to see that OC x HL stories are nowhere near as popular as HL x Reader and I worry that I may not find an audience. When I post anything in ao3 it gets like two likes and in tumblr I'm just ignored completely 😢
Could you please give me some advice pls?
oh my darling! i hear you. the disparity in interest between x oc content vs x reader content is undeniable, but it's also inevitable. all the reasons you describe struggling with reader perspective fics is why it's so popular: the lack of detail allows the reader to adopt a nebulous perspective, whether they see their own oc in that situation or their literal selves. it doesn't require them to get to know or become invested in your creation, it allows them to indulge in what feels like their own.
i don't think readers get enough credit for their suspension of disbelief and the mental work they put into filling in the blanks that authors leave. similarly, it's absolutely difficult to tell a compelling story while leaving what is often the perspective character a near blank slate. that said! the fics i get the most feedback on are where the reader does have a stronger personality. people love banter, and even if the reader's voice doesn't always feel like something they would actually say, it always produces much more engaging interactions.
i've definitely had my struggle with this in the past, but i'm still learning. the series i'm working on right now, Guilty Pleasures, features a reader with quite a lot of personality, and i've established things about her that i wouldn't normally go into such detail, and the response to it has been great! your reader perspective SHOULD still feel like a character with thoughts, motivations and feelings. otherwise, the story is going to fall a little flat.
if it's easier for you to write the reader perspective as if they're your oc, you should do that. there's a delicate balance between too much and too little information when it comes to reader fic. sometimes taking liberties really works, and i think you'd be surprised how well readers can stretch that illusion. reader perspective should resonate, but not be so overpowering that the actual person reading doesn't like them.
but you absolutely do not need to force yourself to write a particular style of story if it's not something you actually enjoy. i also write and enjoy oc fic! i honestly think my oc fic Eat Your Ego is some of my very best work. unfortunately, it's rare that any of those chapters ever break close to 100 notes, whereas even little reader drabbles will see 2-3x those numbers, sometimes more.
but i write it because i love it, and it's the story i want to tell. that's what matters! and because of my dedication to the story, people have been kind enough to trust me with their time and investment. oc fic will never have the same broad appeal that reader fic does, but that doesn't make it less valuable. you just have to invest more in promoting yourself and convincing people that your story has something to offer them.
my best advice is just don't give up! i'm horribly erratic when it comes to the creative projects i work on, but i've been writing Eat Your Ego for over a year and it has gathered a lovely little following. feedback on that fic means SO much to me. even though there's less of it, the joy it brings me is immeasurable because that fic is special to me. don't give up on your story! it deserves to be told. 🖤

I was so pumped to answer then I over thought my answer then I was worried because I wasn't sure if some things I said about them were going to be canon or not and then other drafts overtook it and made it hard to navigate to. 😢 I seriously appreciate your asks.]

Before I begin I'm gonna get the obligatory 'This is not canon compliant nor other continuity compliant' general warning out of the way. (It's not aimed at anyone specifically I'm just covering my bases here. Also cause I'm ignoring fanon and a lot of canon unless I think it fits and like it. )
ONTO THE QUESTIONS!

What are Thundercracker and Skywarp like?
What are some things they like/dislike?
Skywarp and Thundercracker play a pretty big role in the Harbingers storyline so I'm P excited about em.
-Starscream is resilient, adaptive, cunning, unpredictable, brilliant, regal, precise, and dangerous. Hard to kill. Stubborn. He's not Megatron's second in command for a large chunk of time for kicks.
-Thundercracker is diplomatic, creative, hard to read, reliable, heavy hitter, perceptive, and a touch eccentric.
-Skywarp is mischievous, fast, a glass canon, hard to hit, hard to pin down, chaotic, intuitive, clever, and ruthless.
Thundercracker
A mech of few words and lacking in many exuberant expressions, many wonder what mysteries said mech hides. Some people pity him for Starscream and Skywarp 'stealing the spotlight'. Some think he's the real 'brains behind it all' and is too busy 'reigning in' his trine mates to live up to his true potential. Truth is that Thundercracker actually dislikes the spotlight and loves the energy that Skywarp and Starscream have (even if he gripes about it sometimes). Starscream is the brains, but he does run some things by TC when he needs another opinion. He really wishes that people would stop coming to him and putting his trine mates down just because they are energetic and expressive! He loves their energy and personalities! No one needs 'reigning in' and saying otherwise isn't alright. Those who work closely with the lead trine usually learn real fast not to disrespect any of the trine. Except Ramjet. Ramjet is stubborn and refuses to stop being a little shit about everyone even though he's punished with terrible duties every time he does so. The only ones allowed to insult his trinemates are him and his trinemates.
Many assume Thundercracker must be the straight man to Skywarp's nonsense upon acquaintance but they would all be very wrong. TC just gives off less of an outward obvious energy compared to Skywarp and Starscream. Between the three of them he's basically the best with people and most diplomatic. Can be manipulative if a situation requires it. Kinda has Grimlock from Cyberverse energy. (my headcanon Grimlock in my AU is the Grimlock that's in RiD15 because that's peak him IMO) For a Decepticon he's considered rather polite. The fact that he's the one people usually approaches first annoys TC to no end.
He limits how much he talks, outside of the company of mechs he actually likes to talk to, to save energy. Helping Starscream keep the mechs who follow him happy and helping to find solutions for arguments requires a lot of diplomatic skills and patience which can sometimes leave him exhausted. On his off time he usually sticks close to his trine or hides in his quarters.
He frequently plays the moral centre when situations get outta hand. Closet theatre kid. Some people have made the mistake of calling him "soft". But the whole Trine holds such a high rank in the Decepticons for a reason. And Starscream would not have trined with just anyone.
I'm still kinda figuring TC out so the above may change as time goes on. His personality and deeper motivations are just not coming to me quite like Skywarp's, Ironhide's, and Jazz's did. I think I need to write some head trine shenanigans to really figure his whole deal out.

Lil sneak peek of my Harbingers Skywarp design!!
I've been tweaking things about his design for awhile now and I'm still tweaking but I'm finally getting somewhere sncjek. Fun fact about his design!! For some of his proportions I'm referencing ferret anatomy.
Does a lot of cackling while he fights. Switches between rough front line scrapper to sneaky stealth attacks.
Skywarp is the sort of person who is more than meets the eye. I'm sorry I HAD to 😂.
Skywarp is very high energy with a mischievous streak a mile long. He is unapologetically himself and gives exactly zero frags about what most others think of him. Besides the whole cackling like a gremlin at everything and causing problems on purpose thing, Skywarp is pretty easygoing temperament wise. He isn't afraid of change or the new and unusual. He let's things go quickly so he's almost impossible to prank or insult back in any satisfying way since he really isn't bothered by much. He really doesn't care that he has a reputation of not being the smartest cause it means people underestimate him. He's more patient and skilled than he lets on. He and Thundercracker are two of Starscream's closest right hand mechs for a reason. But he's not self conscious about this perception and sometimes will actively play into it. An enemy who underestimates you is a more easily beatable one. Skywarp is still loveably head empty no thoughts though. He reserves his patience and smarts for pranks and the battlefield. He has zero brain to mouth filter and is impulsive 70% of the time. Oddly drops wisdom bombs on occasion.
Skywarp's hijinks also kind of puts him in a role similar to a court jester. He acts goofy because that's just who he is a person but the upside of that is some people don't take him as seriously as they should. So he overhears a LOT of conversations from mechs who assume he's not listening. This makes it handy to give Starscream inside information.
Another upside of people underestimating him is it makes it almost laughably easy to get the drop on people. Don't be fooled by his goofiness this mech can be dangerously patient. His impressive agility, surprising patience, and ridiculously good hand eye coordination make him unpredictably deadly for foe and prankable ally alike. He can play the long game.

What's usually not very clear / understated is the fact that in canon, Lance was way ahead of his time with the show. It was said that the show was years before any of the other reality tv ghost hunting shows came along, so if it hadn't been for Collingwood and everyone getting killed/him getting kidnapped, he would've revolutionized this genre , or maybe even created it. His exec said in the beginning that they really had something special and that ratings were great.
Like despite it obv being cheesy and fake as hell, this thing was still his baby. He put so much effort and work into it. Combining a truckload of jobs and tasks in just him as one person in the beginning (editing, writing, directing, acting, producing, financing, planning and what not) Grave Encounters was about showing off what he was capable of and could do, and despite tastes and questionable end product /genre and all, he really did excel and deliver on all fronts there. I watched a great review of the movie by someone the other day where the reviewer correlated Lance's indifference/cynicism towards the paranormal with the insane level of stress and responsibility he had and the creative dilemma he was constantly facing with it - he had to make sure to get great ratings, get people to tune in and become fans and stay invested (making faking it a lot of times a necessity) because otherwise his show would just be dead in the water, while also trying to do cool and creative stuff that he and the team were passionate about and interested in as well - as seen when he immediately dropped the hardened skeptic act the second Collingwood starts doing things, like he's so excited about it!
He walked a very thin line with the show on a lot of fronts. Balancing between cheesy and cool, genuine, well-researched history and blatant lies, 'cheap' shaky cam and high quality top notch production from a tech point of view, and just generally being on top of his A+ game without breaking from the insane stress and pressure. If it hadn't been for Collingwood, it would've been a success. I'm convinced it would've jumpstarted an even bigger career for him in Hollywood and as a celebrity filmmaker. Would it have jaded his character hardcore? Would it have made him the biggest, self-centered Hollywood fake persona douchebag? Very probably. But this is exactly the type of success he'd been after. Money and fame. And the show put him on a damn good track.
Post canon?
No big word vomit necessary. He couldn't give less of a shit about the show and Hollywood and money and fame anymore. Biggest success there : surviving. Still being alive. Stopping it all. And honestly, just making it through another day despite heavy PTSD and the after effects of it all, honestly.

She is neither irrelevant nor unpopular, heavy on the definitely not unpopular. She could not more clearly be the opposite and I've never said otherwise. Annoyed x200 by the character I'll always be, but I don't need to lie.
Not a fanservice ending, I didn't say that either, lmao. I can promise you that D&D cared not one whisper of what fans think. They never cared, right down to the end. They did however, care more for elements of GoT that they had more creative control over, a list that at the very top of---is Sansa. Because she had zero to do with her book counterpart long before the final season. It's her character who's book arc they tossed aside because it wasn't interesting enough (their opinion, not mine). And ultimately inserted her into a narrative she wasn't supposed to be in and will almost certainly play no part in when we get to it in the book.
She'll have the humble ending that's foreshadowed to her, not the fake political genius D&D wrote her to be with the laughable attempts at ~intellect~ that not only fell flat each and every time, but were wrong??? LMFSKSKS PLS, you can keep her.
Anyways, bring on TWOW. Because someone's gonna take an L there, and it's not gonna be me or my fave.

Damian and Skia has different surnames, well that's odd isn't it?
Skia Narc. Narc from Narcissus which means daffodil. Daffodil symbolizes rebirth and new beginnings, often they're also seen to represent inspiration, forgiveness, and creativity. Skia is a witty and often causes mischief which reflects the "inspiration and creativity", "rebirth and new beginning" can also represent on how she made a big leap to fix her attitude, "forgiveness" represents her character that no matter how bad she did she will always seek for forgiveness
Damian Gratia. Gratia has many meanings, starting from "grace", "thanks", "goodwill", "gratitude", etc. "Grace" is how he carries himself despite his more fiery heart he will always be gentle, "goodwill" represents his true nature because no matter what's the scenario is he will always do things for the sake of good, "gratitude" he's a modest person and doesn't have much back in his younger life but always grateful that he has someone to be there for him. If he's represented as a flower like his sister, that would be Hydrangea which symbolizes "thankfulness", it reflects on how many times hardships always rock slides his life, whether it from his own temper or nature, he will always give his thanks to anything that lifts him up
Now forgiveness and thankfulness, those are what revolves between these siblings. Their names are virtuous but their actions may say otherwise, Skia sometimes resolves conflict in the most unnerving way as Damian often has grudges on something, but this won't change what they actually are at heart. And the theme of Forgiveness | Thankfulness...

forgiveness and thankfulness are two interesting virtues to have the twins represent, but i can see that they do. with igno meaning "forgive" as well, it aligns with his character arc very well
i'm curious about makoto and volo tho! can't wait to see what's next!!

oh, i’m clowning so hard hoping for a 12 appearance because it’s rachel but😩
hard agree about 13s tardis. the early new who seasons utilized the it as it’s own character, having a mind of its own, which i loved. this era didn’t have much of that, at least from what i remember? my brain went to the ep where river jumped off of a building and landed in the tardis pool😭 definitely miss ridiculous stuff like that and hope it makes a comeback with ncuti’s doctor.
they did make 13s tardis very dark and contrasty — the only thing i can think of creative wise is that it kinda reflects the character traits they were going for? maybe i’m reading too much into it though, lol.
(re: your tags, i’m totally down to dm! but fyi i’m a guy [albeit not a cishet one], so idk if you’d feel comfortable with that. if not, it’s completely understandable and am fine conversing through anon🙂)

Yess omg the pool in the library, I'm thinking like Jackie sitting up on the railing in Army of Ghosts when Rose is like "😬 my mums still on board...", as I say Rory and Amy playing darts lives in my head rent free, that one bit where Clara's obviously just got out the shower, her keeping her kids homework there, Bill taking the piss out of the fact you can't reach the console from the chairs etc etc like GOD I love the TARDIS so much that's their HOME baby... also after TTC can you IMAGINE if we got a little quiet scene w the Doctor asking it if it KNEW about all this when they stole each other way... IM ON THE FLOOR.
I like 13s TARDIS in theory/from the set pics, blueprints and whatnot but I just don't think it's shot/used very well in actual eps which is so 😢
And yeah im comfortable talking with anyone really, nw!

Aw yeah, it's one of the headcanons I'm willing to put my life at stake for 😎😎. Honestly with the way he's coded it's impossible for me to think otherwise, haha.
I've always wanted to make more autistic headcanons and doodles but never really had the inspiration to do so 🥺😢. It's alright though, there are still a handful of posts (from me and other people) that go through this better than I could in my current creative-blocked state.

Can I say an unpopular opinion: Im meh on Euphoria 😬 I love the fact it got Zendaya an Emmy! She ACTS on there and there's come characters I like, but I'm trying to figure out if the music and cinematography is what's making the show better than what it is? I cant see the show have more then 3 seasons because I feel like HBO is going to get tired of Sam and his writer's block and they'll have creative differences. Did you see "We Are Who We Are"?

No worries! I don’t necessarily mind “unpopular opinions” on here.
I’ll be totally honest --- The show Euphoria isn’t really my cup of tea when it comes to genre of tv shows. And part of me wonders if the way the show is shot is kind of glorifying drug abuse in a way? 🥴 You might be right that the cinematography (which IS good ngl) kind of makes the show more than what it really is in some people’s minds. Some aspects of the show can be triggering for me so I just can’t watch a show dealing with that week after week, and I think Z understands that and even put out a disclaimer for her fans that if they can’t watch it, then THAT’S OKAY.
In general, with regard to your sentiment... I feel the same way. I LOVE that Z won the Emmy for it (so proud of her!!! 😃🙌) and she worked SO FREAKING HARD on that show, and it basically became her LIFE, so for her to get rewarded like that is amazing. 😃 I feel like she really put all of her blood, sweat and tears into that show, so I’m sure she’s so proud to feel acknowledged for her hard work. I also like the fact that the show really pushed her to expand her acting skills. She always mentions how it forced her to be more vulnerable and really tap into her emotions onscreen (which, can be a hard thing for some actors to do).
With that said.... I think I have more of an issue with SAM than I do of the show itself lol. I don’t like the 16-hour work days every day... I don’t like the fact that
the show takes like 8-9 months to shoot. GOT takes a shorter time period and it’s a freakin’ period piece! 🥴 I just feel like Sam changes stuff last minute, is all over the place, and it adds to the LENGTHY time of shooting. I like that he inspires “creativity” in his actors, but I mean, when you’re changing an actor’s lines the DAY OF filming...it’s kind of chaotic to shoot like that (no offense). I also don’t like that the show takes up A LOT of her time. In the time that she films Euphoria, she could be filming TWO big-screen movie projects.
And lastly... I don’t quite like the fact that the show is SO emotionally taxing. I know it has to be emotionally draining. And if you’re someone like Z who already suffers from anxiety issues and who knows what else, I just think it’s a pretty mentally, emotionally, and maybe even physically draining shoot to be on for 8 months out of the year. 😢 It’s one thing to film a movie where you’re playing a drug addict that is shot for 3-4 months, and the movie is only going to be 2 hours long. It can be draining as well, but once you’re done w/that character... you’re DONE. You don’t keep going back to it year after YEAR...for 8-9 months each time. 👀 Idk maybe it’s just me, I think it could end up eventually being a bit draining over time. I also find it interesting that she feels so strongly connected to her character Rue. It’s almost like she is emotionally attached to the character somehow. For some actors this might be a good thing, for others...not-so-good? I guess it all just depends. I always feel like even if there are certain similarities, you should always sort of separate yourself from the character you are playing...Like, there should be a clear divide. Otherwise you can get caught up.
Overall, if the show inspires her, then great!! 😃 I’m glad it brings her joy,and she seems to view the cast as “family” too, so that’s good.
I kind of feel like she should probably move on after S2, but if the show gets picked up for a third season, then she might be playing Rue for a while lol. I just want her to get out of playing high school roles I guess. I’m also more anxious to see her more on the big screen.
These are just my personal thoughts. 🤷

Are you named after anyone? Well my buddy gave me the nickname Sas, short for Sassy Pants. So... I think I was named after my penchant for snark and shitty puns.
When was the last time you 😢? Honestly it’s been a while since I had a good (or, well, bad) cry. The last full-on cry was back in May, and honestly, it changed my relationship with someone I was close to in drastic but ultimately helpful ways, since it drove me to finally unload all my emotional baggage onto a therapist, hehe.
Do you have kids? Unless you count the OC babes in my stories, no.
Do you use sarcasm a lot? In writing through certain characters, or in non-fiction through my voice (I DON’T KNOW why I’m such a snarky anecdote-narrator but I just am). In real life I only unlock my sarcasm potential with people I’m not anxious around.
What’s your eye colour? That dark color many people call “black”. But really, bruh, no one’s eyes are completely black, because otherwise how tf would you see the pupils? Huh? Huhhhh? So, very dark brown.
Scary movie or happy ending? Happy endings (with a dash of sad).
Any special talents? Besides endless stream-of-consciousness daydreams and an abundance of procrastination energy, I also have the much-envied gift of perfect pitch, to the surprise of my choir instructors back in the day.
Where were you born? In a hospital. (Heh.) In China.
What are your hobbies? In my free time I like to torment the hug-worthy, the morally-gray, and the irredeemable characters who are by-products and important fragments of my mercurial imagination. This is often done in the form of daydreaming, and sometimes done in the form of writing. I hope to be able to do the latter a lot more.
Do you have any pets? I like the concept of owning a big, floofy dog just as chaotic as I am, but I don’t consider myself responsible enough for one atm, emotionally as well as financially.
What sports do you play/have you played? The only sports I can tolerate (besides speed-walking due to impatience) are biking and swimming. So, those.
How tall are you? 1.72m, and has been since I was 14, which let me pass as an adult for way earlier than is good for me. *Evil chuckle.*
Favourite subject? If you mean in school, in the life that I had just left behind... Psychology, literature (but creative writing in particular), visual arts, and the occasional dash of drama when social anxiety isn’t being a bitch.
Dream job? I want to be commissioned and paid advances that would let me roam around the house trying to convince my hellbrain to let me settle down and write, all day, every day.
