Cuphead vs. The Cuphead Show: If TCS is Good Now, Here’s Why And How it Could Be Better (A Critical Essay Review)

Foreword of Essay:

This critical essay was written for the growth and support of the franchise, the game, the animated series, and other future productions that may arrive. The intended angle chosen upon writing this essay will be subjective interpretations backed up with facts, lore, clips from various classic cartoons, and article reviews, and such materials will be used to be compared to the animated show. Arguments are intended to be balanced with facts on both pro and anti-bases of the scale and such angles will also be backed up with some common opinions about it.

However, please note that such intentions may not be perfected in this essay and some points of view may have been missed due to the amount of research taken and the nature of human error. I repeat the intention of making these critiques are for the sake of improvement and my passion for making art and wonderful stories.

May you have an open mind and may you be protected from negative emotions that may trigger you in reading this essay.

The moment I fell in love with Cuphead was because of this:

I have one word for this GIF: #goals.

At the time, my relationship with my brother was already broken to the point that there was irreparable damage. Before the Double Platinum Award, I was only familiar with Cuphead. I have seen it, I have played a bit of it, but I wasn’t entirely invested in the game… until I saw this peculiar picture above. At first, I thought it was weird, goofy, funny, wholesome, and cute. This is when I started to get interested and do a bit of research about the lore of the game (because lore reading is one of my favorites), and also some background about how the game was made due to the wonderful animation and graphics. Overall, I came to this conclusion:

Cuphead and Mugman are two best friends who live together as brothers.

It was the very first glimmer of a concept to even surface in the media; a standard production would have featured an average toxic relationship, or it’s a production with a lot of fighting and it is stereotyped as ‘healthy’ because siblings fight. This picture changed everything for me and it was helping my relationship with my brother heal as well as my perspective on being a brother. Even more, there were other people within the community that made art that echoed this relationship.

I’m here because I wanted so badly to be part of it with the added benefit of my mental healing. And so I did!

It was bliss, and having the idea of these brothers play & play, and live rent-free in my mind was some of the happiest things I’ve ever had in my life. I wanted it to keep going and going.

So I’ve made my own fan work here and there (which are irrelevant to this essay) but to keep my inspiration up I kept on following the franchise. The game, the comics, and soon the novels if I can get my hands on them. But then came… The Cuphead Show.

I wanted to love the show unconditionally, and yet I find myself agreeing to the critical reception of 67% and 70% ratings it has received. I watched a select few episodes and avoided the ones I did not like, and I would say Episodes 7 and 8 were actually decent to watch. I kept tabs on the series every now and then just to see how the story was going, and I’m sad to say my opinion has not changed. This essay will elaborate on why.

Essay Contents:

Cons:

- Character inconsistency

- Weak Plot (even if it is a comedy, compared to cartoons like SpongeBob, Adventure Time, The Amazing World of Gumball, etc.).

Pros:

- Superb Animation

- Strong appeal to the Gen-Z.

- It’s a ‘fun-house cartoon’.

This mainly talks about The Cuphead Show.

Character inconsistency

This is talking about the large disparity between the characters of the game, comics, and books, and the show. The three aforementioned materials have a consistency about the style and characterization of the franchise’s characters and that consistency has led to well-structured and well-branded stories , but noticeably they are very different from the show. Characterization is a vital part of Cuphead’s story because this is a character-driven plot. Without the key strengths and weaknesses of the characters, the plot becomes weak and less entertaining.

The characters in question are of course:

- Cuphead & Mugman

- Elder Kettle

- The Devil

- King Dice

- The Inkwell Isle Bosses

Starting with:

Cuphead and Mugman (TCS)

In a nutshell: They fight about the smallest things… but they don’t laugh about the smallest things. They are brothers, but they don’t have enough ‘bro’ moments.

At best, they are nice to each other and just talk (on seldom occasions they show how much they love each other), at worst they are verbally and physically violent, on average they are just tolerant that they are there. A lot of you might think that “hey, isn’t what I described a perfect description of brothers?” Actually, because they fight a lot and the degree of harm they cause to each other, this is an example of what a toxic relationship looks like. Realistic and healthy brotherly relationships have a balance of both wholesome and bitter moments, and by the end of the conflict they just continue playing as if nothing of the sort happened. This topic about healthy brotherly relationships is a core of Cuphead and Mugman’s relationship and characterization because even Maja Moldenhaur mentioned this during her speech in ‘The Cuphead Journey’:

They weren’t just brothers, they were best friends.

(Side topic: But wait, wasn’t she talking about Chad & Jared MDHR, not Cuphead and Mugman? And yet, the cartoon art created for that specific presentation had Chad and Jared wear red and blue shirts respectively for almost every slide. And the fact that the ‘Deal With the Devil’ was actually a metaphor for their choice of quitting their jobs and going all-in on the Cuphead video game project. You get the jist, they drew their Cupsonas in a Fleischer-inspired animation world).

Going back: Best friends, for no apparent reason, do things that make each other laugh or happy, and because they are best friends they always look for that moment. That doesn’t necessarily mean they do nice things all the time, sometimes or often they do things that are risky, stupid, dangerous, and offensive to the average person, but between the both of them it’s a language that only they would understand and only they know would make each other happy. This is what’s supposed to make the polar opposite to their consistent fighting, and combining the two polars (wholesome and bitter) will achieve a balance and accuracy to a healthy relationship.

What is demonstrated in the show however is this:

Between them it’s like they live in an atmosphere of kerosene and only a spark of antagonization is enough to light the sky on fire. This is what I meant when I said ‘the average toxic sibling relationship’ stereotype which is covered up as healthy in the mainstream; siblings don’t support you, they provoke you, at least that’s the culture that the mainstream wants to instill.

Even in the episode 7 & 8 that’s evident in these lines:

Season 1 Episode 7

“No one cares about little ole me!” Cuphead said denying his worries about the Devil taking his soul.

It’s Not:

“No one cares about little ole me…” Cuphead paused. “Except you pal.”

Mugman smiled. “And Elder Kettle.”

“AAAND Elder Kettle.”

There’s an absent sense of security and confidence that he has people who cares about him, and that’s not only shallow, but toxic that he takes them for granted, which makes his character inconsistent. He’s a loveable scamp, not a selfish jerk.

Another example:

After Quadratus instructs Mugman to nit an invisible sweater…

“Well, it looks like I have to nit an invisible sweater.”

Emphasis on ‘have to’, as in it’s a hassle he has to fulfill his obligation and there’s no benefit in that.

It’s Not:

“Well… IF IT MEANS SAVIN’ MY BROTHER’S SOUL I’LL DO ANYTHIN!” Says Mugman standing on top of a rock from Quadratus’ pond with a white glow behind him and an angelic choir, which is actually coming from Quadratus, singing on the background.

Cuphead starts to cry tears of gratitude, but then mischievously smiles. “HEY! YOU CAN’T STAND THERE LIKE YOU’RE SOME KING OF THE ROCK, GET DOWN FROM THERE!”

The scene plays on with Cuphead wrestling Mugman on Quadratus’ pond, and Quadratus becomes the wrestling referee that counts 1, 2, 3 as laughing Mugman is pinned down.

Mugman is supposed to be this unconditionally loving brother to Cuphead. No matter how much the latter screws up and makes stupid decisions, he’s always there to pick him back up and keep playing with just a high five to the chest. Plus, if he really is his ‘best friend’, then he’d keep on hanging out with Cuphead because there is an unexplained happiness he feels with him, and it usually translates into a lot of feel-good actions like high-fives, fist bumps, chest bumps, head clinks, etc. In here, he’s just as tolerant and cold, he’s no better than Cuphead, makes sense for the spin-off, but it eliminates what makes Mugman Cuphead’s pal.

Another example:

Episode 2:

“NO FIGHTING!” Elder Kettle slams the door. He opens the door again to check on them and then slams the door again.

Cuphead and Mugman without hesitation begin to fight.

It’s Not:

“No fighting!” Elder Kettle wags his finger.

Cuphead and Mugman look at each other, and smirk.

“Uhh what?” Cuphead raised an eyebrow to EK.

EK raised an eyebrow in confusion. “Because… you’re brothers?”

While looking at Elder Kettle, Cuphead and Mugman do a fist bump, followed by a complex Chicken Little high five combo and then ending with a head clink and a buddy hug.

“Yes?” Cuphead and Mugman say together.

Elder Kettle hums. “Good point. Have fun, but not too much fun!” Elder Kettle leaves.

Cuphead smiles mischievously at Mugman.

“What?” He asked suspiciously at Cuphead.

“Elder Kettle’s not home.” Cuphead smiles bigger.

Mugman’s eyes widen in shock realization about the meme reference. “NO! NO! NONONONONONONO!” He says while towering and scolding Cuphead while the latter smiles more mischievous. Eventually Cuphead’s smile infects Mugman that he starts giggling. “N-HO! UH-UH! I’M NOT DOING IT!”

“DEW IT!” Cuphead says in a goofy evil bass voice while he narrows his eyelids.

“NO! NO!” Mugman pulls out his straw from his head and begins to play it like a trumpet to the melody of ‘When Mom Isn’t Home’.

Cuphead walks over to their front door and slams it open and shut repeatedly, same way as the meme.

(Rest of the scene plays as an inspiration to the ‘Trashing The Camp’ scene from Tarzan).

Another example:

Season 2 Episode 3:

Cuphead removes the tentacle that has been attacking his face while Mugman is adoring the conversation of Briny and Cala for the latter to be the former’s girlfriend.

“Hey, Mugsy!” Cuphead whispered.

“Yeah?” Mugman whispered back.

“Ya sure about lettin’ Captain Brinyface become Cala’s mate?” Cuphead whispered.

“Yeah! It’s goin’ great!” Mugman smiled.

“No no, I mean you! Don’t you want to take your chance with Cala?”

“What?!” Mugman yelled. “What do you mean?!”

“I mean, she did call you ‘dinner’.” Cuphead winked.

“Cuphead-….” Mugman paused in thought and then smiles with an ‘I see what you did there’ face while Cuphead smiled wider. “Not that kind of dinner.” Mugman giggled.

“Eh, suit yourself. She’s a really BIG catch if you know what I mean.” Cuphead elbow nudges Mugman and winks at him twice.

Mugman giggled. “Nah, there are plenty of fish in the sea.”

Cuphead’s mouth gaped open “Oooooohhhh!”

Cuphead and Mugman start tearfully giggling at each other.

Cala Maria looks at the cup brothers confused while Captain Brinybeard looks unamused.

“Vat are they talking about?” Cala Maria Asked.

“Eh.” Brineybeard shrugs his shoulders. “Brothers.”

And my last example:

Season 3 (or Season 1C as some people refer)

Episode 1:

By the end of the episode, after Mugman asks what Cuphead wants to do, Cuphead chooses to go back to Soul Ball, indicating that nothing has changed, and despite being sorry for dealing with the devil, the thrill of the game is too much of a reward to deny. Realizing this, Mugman faints, and the cycle begins again.

What could’ve been better is:

Cuphead plays Soul Ball, but this time he offers the ball to Mugman to play. Mugman is nervous and gets angry stating he will never risk his soul to the devil, Cuphead says he knows that… but then dares him to not lose the game. Mugman then gets nervous and worries about losing the Soul Ball game. Cuphead agrees… but then says he’ll be missing out on the fun of: ‘Pissing off the Devil’. Excited and motivated, Mugman makes his 1st try on Soul Ball, but then loses. The machine sucks Mugman’s soul, but Cuphead easily catches it and puts it back to Mugman. The Devil appears pissed and tries to forcefully take Mugman’s soul, but Cuphead laughs and runs away with Mugman fearful of his life.

“The game’s not over yet buddy!” Cuphead says.

Once again, the Devil shoots fire from his pitchfork and accidentally destroys a part of the Carnevil. Mugman realizes this and starts to laugh with Cuphead as they play this game of dangerous ‘tag’ with the devil. After the Carnevil is destroyed, the Devil is horrified at the destruction, while Cuphead and Mugman laugh and run away together with the Carnevil once again burning down in the background.

I think you can see the difference; there wasn’t much significant ‘best friend’ qualities that Cuphead and Mugman shared between them, whereas it was only hinted and told that they are very close. This is the power of ‘show don’t tell’, a lot of toxicity and hostility between them is shown and they would tend to forgive each other only to repeat the cycle all over again, and only in desperate times or in the rare case they are on the same page would they call each other friends. What’s worse is that not only is this a dark concept about brotherhood, but it’s a very inconsistent characterization of Cuphead and Mugman in comparison to the game, comics, and books.

The concept of resurrecting either Cuphead or Mugman includes giving a high-five to either of their hearts. I repeat, a high-five to either of their hearts. Whatever the interpretation may be: it’s cute, adorable, and wholesome.

Best shot I could find.

These are the animations for Mugman and Cuphead respectively if both players choose to equip Chalice’s cookie before entering a boss fight. It’s a small detail but, but if you will take a closer look, at the very start of the animation they’re both holding a half of the same cookie, or in other words, they’re casually sharing the same cookie. This indicates one, (of course) they care about each other, and two, it directly contradicts the Cuphead Show synopsis ‘Unless there's only one cookie left, in which case it's every cup for himself.’

These are the jumping victory animation of Cuphead and Mugman after beating a boss level. Just two brothers celebrating side by side by jumping and jumping accompanied with lots and lots of cheers. Nothing toxic, just simple wholesome childish joy.

One last evidence:

- No mention of any ill will or criticism towards each other. Despite Cuphead had gambled his soul to the devil, Mugman pulled his own weight (2-Player game available), protected his brother from harm (resurrect mechanic), invited to race him back home as soon it was all over, and made a promise with Cuphead to never get in trouble again as if it was his responsibility too. Heck, in the DLC, he even joined him on the next adventure & voluntarily got in trouble and ate the cookie without knowing what it does. He’s as much a trouble-maker as his brother is.

However, if it was given from the start that they fight a lot, then I have no right to criticize and this essay is an example of ignorance and a lack of respect for the creative choice of the artists. But in this case, it’s the other way around, The Cuphead Show is an adaptation of the game and the franchise; despite its Executive Producers being Chad & Jared MDHR, the main director of the project is Dave Wasson.

If it were a truly healthy friendship between these two then they would be open and carefree about expressing themselves without the fear of being shut down by each other. And the following is a big yes to brotherly relationships: roughhousing, wrestling, arm wrestling, and other physical competition; it is a healthy aspect of brotherly love because it pushes them to be stronger and learn how to fight when the real threats come, and most importantly it’s the right amount of thrill and fun in playtime for boys like them.

Instead, in the show, we’ve got 2 brothers who provoke each other until they fight for the smallest reasons they could think of, and they tend to not respect each other for who they are and what they need. (Ex: Mugman uses Cuphead’s jawbreaker instead of soap to make Quadratus appear, he doesn’t respect his brother’s passion for candy. Cuphead takes an entire maple syrup bottle and is inconsiderate if Mugman would’ve liked some. Mugman thought of cutting Cuphead’s hands with shears. Cuphead attempted to replace Mugman as his brother).

Cuphead and Mugman had a special relationship, they’re like two best friends who invite each other over for a playdate except they live in the same house. They don’t have to wait until late afternoon or after school to have fun or they didn’t have to say goodbye just to wait for their playdate, because they live in the same house!

I know I’m not the only one who agrees on these differences. There are several fanart and fan creators that agree with this disparity and support the show anyway, which I am grateful by the way that they support the franchise. My part as a fan is to highlight how it could be improved.

A few pegs that could be like Cuphead and Mugman’s relationship would be:

- The Game Grumps Dan & Arin (Some specific examples may not apply)

- Fred & George Weasley (Harry Potter)

- Team Rocket

- Chip n Dale

- Goofy Gophers

- Sans & Papyrus (Undertale)

- Catdog

In conclusion, Cuphead and Mugman’s relationship is actually what I look for in this franchise because it helps me heal from a scarred relationship. I love the franchise’s interpretation of these two, but The Cuphead Show has a lot of shoes and porcelain cups to fill.

you have to admit that Devil from The Cuphead Show,

seems to be a Himbo....it might just be me who thinks that.

don’t know if there will be a lot of people who would agree.

if you look up the definition of “Eon” some might understand why I started to use the word “Eon-Boomer”.....and well it can be seen as being around WAY longer than Baby Boomers....I mean, it does make sense if you really REALLY thinking about it....I’m just weird enough to have that pop into my head.

plus if Devil from Cuphead Show, has been around for centuries to even eons, that would make him an Eon-Boomer.

even Octavia’s Dad would be a Eon-Boomer, and let’s see, most of the Hierarchy in Hazbin Hotel & Helluva Boss....

and it wouldn’t just be in Heck, either....

anyway the reason why Cadance, Shinning Armor and Cozy Glow’s Cutie Marks

are in the same space, has to do with a theory I have that is about Cozy Glow secretly being Shining and Cadance’s daughter.

both Chrysalis and Tirek are Royalty, and Cozy Glow is possibly Royalty,

and she has blue mane, pink coat and is a pegasus.

it does kind of suck that out of all the ponies that don’t get reformed,

it’s Pegasi, I can’t be the only one who notice this, right...?

unless there is a comic that shows different, and I guess I could try to look it up to see if there is a comic canon about a Villain Pegasus being reformed...

but my theory about Cozy Glow is wrong, and maybe she isn’t their daughter.

but it doesn’t change the fact that there could be a reason why she ended up with a twisted view and became corrupted.

and from what we know of the whole ponies throwing some creatures from their native homes in the forest, and right into Tartarus.

oh and let’s not forget, instead of just sending Cozy Glow to the Human World (where Sunset Shimmer lives currently.)

they decide to send her to Tartarus.

I can still like a show but can disagree with certain actions that heroes end up doing, that can do more harm than good.

maybe magic leaving Equestria was Karma.

it’s like you can only misuse magic so much before karma comes to play.

same goes for Star Butterfly scapegoating magic as the problem,

but in truth it was her and her family that were the problem, because of their misuse of the magic.

magic can only become a problem, if it is being misused by it’s wielder.

and I still think Chrysalis became traumatized and it is the reason why she rejects the magic of friendship, and I also believe she isn’t really Thorax and Pharynx’s Mother, and that she was once a pony before being brought back to life as a changeling.

plus Princess Celestia keeping Magical Artifacts that don’t belong to the ponies, and one of them belonging to possibly Thorax and Pharynx’s True Mother....

it just doesn’t seem right, shouldn’t all those artifacts be returned to the Changelings, Yaks, Dragons, Griffin and Hippogriff...?

and there could be other fans who have been starting to question it as well.

maybe just don’t worry about it for now...

besides Cozy, Shining and Cadance’s Cutie Marks being in this drawing,

this drawing also has Sunny Starscout’s Cutie Mark, too.

Info-Chan is in her Silhouette form in this drawing, with only her hair and glasses showing.

I should check to see if there is any new updates for Yandere Simulator.

Sans is in this, but you can only see his mouth and body with a human and monster soul right next to him, and the top half where his eyes and the rest of his head should be, it has Steven Universe instead...

because of the whole Steven Quartz Universe and Sans being one in the same

(but in theory, it would be the human half that becomes Sans, while the gem half continues as Steven in Steven Universe Future.)

this drawing also has “Eyes, Butterflies and Symbol for Earth.”

The Puppet’s Mask being “Purple” instead of “White”,

kind of reminds me of Purple-Guy, for all we know we might of been tricked and “Purple-Guy” could turn out to be The Puppet of The Classic Animatronics, and Toy-Puppet was their replacement.

I think I will talk about that theory later....

right now I’m going to read one of my FNAF books.

I love so many things but then only end up drawing GF. It’s like the Midas touch, but worse.

I just started the Netflix Bee and Puppy cat! It’s amazing! I rewatched the YouTube series for the millionth time and then started the Netflix, and I’m really liking it.

I also started watching The Arcane. I love the art and the story, wouldn’t say I’m in the fandom, but I appreciate the show.

I guess I’ll just make a list of fandoms I’m in or stalk from time to time.

MadK - which is a very dark BL manga… obvi NSFW, but it’s amazing. The art is beautiful and the plot is fr interesting and I need the third book like now, because I gotta know how this is gonna end.

The Banquet - a web comic (tho u can get hard copies and exclusive nfsw art books through Patreon). It’s gay and cute and about demons and we stan.

Nightvale - Yo. I tried to do the podcasts in like middle school. They were fun but like, too many, I never finished. But the books are fire so I really like them, they have the same feel, mention OG characters, but have plot and stuff. - In that same vibe….

Alice isn’t dead. It’s another book by Joseph Fink and has that surreal nightvale vibe, but toned down a little, also mc is a lesbian so, finger snaps. (Now that im looking at his books he has a lot more so brb while I spend money I don’t have.)

Undertale will always be in my heart, and I need to play delta rune chpt 2.

So yeah! Thats the stuff im into atm, or have been within the past few yrs. Some more then others, but mostly everything here is what I try to stay up to date on. I also always have the ghosts of superwholockian and bronies past looming over me… but we all have our demons. And if I ever vanish, know that they got to me and I’m rewatching all of Doctor Who because I stopped at the 12th doctor and there’s like a fourteenth one now? And I does’s have to know.

Will there be an arc of Cuphead and Leonardo bonding over the guilt of how their reckless actions got their respective brothers hurt and try to do better?

The thing about Cuphead is that his in-universe game is “based on true events”, which inspired the in-universe series. But yeah, he was a totally garbage brother during that point in his and Mugman’s lives despite how the experience made them super popular/rich.

Leo is going to secretly follow Raph on his travels with the Wattersons.

One of the places is known as the Videogame Kingdom, a “gated community” of sorts where only people of the video game industry can reside. Leo manages to follow them all the way there just to make sure his brother is alright, despite how Raph up and left their family/swearing to hate them forever.

Cuphead discovers him but swears to keep him hidden since thsg would upset Raph, who is just so happy right now.

So that comic you saw of Leo and Cuphead is them coming to terms that, at times they are the absolute worst brothers and their siblings deserve better. They’ll bond. But Leo is still scared to approach Raph, and Cuphead can’t blame him.

(A work in progress, I’m SO EXCITED to do the Rise arcs, but there’s still so many before that happens 🥲)

Welcome to Lifelight!

Lifelight is an au (more of an original story than an au, really) of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate where the roster- mostly the Miis- is tasked with exploring the universe and learning about the myths surrounding its creation so they can rid the world of demons that have started to ambush certain locations. It’s a pretty simple outline of a plot, but I’m still working on everything going on.

There’s a chance I’ll make a Lifelight comic, but it’s slim- this blog is just where I’ll dump my ideas & art, and also an ask blog! Here, you can talk to the characters- sometimes accompanied with a picture! There will also be some in character posts

I’m not the most knowledgeable in every franchise represented in Smash- I play Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, Mario, Kirby, Animal Crossing, and Minecraft (I also am pretty familiar with Earthbound), so info on fighters from any other series would be helpful!

There are a few characters who aren’t playable in Smash/not in Smash at all that are in Lifelight because I can do what I want. These are:

Inquiry 1

During the last two weeks of Process and Systems, I completed my first design sprint. The project began with a trip to the hardware store and a $5 budget. I was unsure about what to get at the hardware store, but I landed on the idea of a springy door stop. As a kid, I loved to play with the door stop and hear the weird sound that they made, so I figured it would be a good basis for a toy. I then used some scrap wire to make arms, paint chips to create a base, and a paint marker to draw on a face. Thus, the Springy Slugger was born.

I decided to make a series of three posters inspired by vintage toy advertisements. This choice went on to inspire the color palette of this project as well as the typography. I then struggled with what style of illustration the toy should be in, but I landed on a Cuphead/Mickey Mouse look. This prompted me to give my character big shoes, gloved hands, and bold linework. I used a textured background to try to give the poster a vintage feel, and then I layered comic “explosion” shapes with spiraling lines to emphasize the purpose of the Springy Slugger, which is to spring and throw punches. I aimed to make my posters look almost like frames of an animation, with the character’s movement progressing throughout.

The sections of the design matrix which I was focusing on were toy, posters, and memory. I wanted to give kids and adults alike the nostalgic feeling of playing with the door stop as a young child. I also pushed the feeling of nostalgia by choosing vintage typefaces and a more traditional illustration style.

I am happy with what I created, as it is quite different from other things I have designed, but I feel that I could definitely have pushed myself further. After seeing my peers’ presentations, I realized what level of work is being created in this class, and it inspired me to want to push myself further for the next project. Also after reading the rubric that we used to provide feedback in class, it became clearer to me what the expectations are. I want my work to come off as professional and portfolio-ready, like many of the presentations that I saw. I especially noted how many people brought in physical mockups of their products, which I think is a really nice touch. For the next presentation, I will be sure to include personas of my target audience as well as where my inquiry falls on the design matrix.

I thought the podcast episode of 99 Percent Invisible was really interesting. I have a love for all kinds of music, but I am relatively uneducated about the history of the music industry. I think this podcast emphasized the importance of packaging and design in all industries, even in the realm of politics. I was completely unfamiliar with the concept of CD longboxes before listening to this podcast and subsequently looking up images. While longboxes did solve the temporary problem of shelving CDs in record stores, I do agree with the members of R.E.M. about the wastefulness of the packaging.

I was vaguely familiar with the phrase “Rock the Vote”, though I did not entirely know the message and group behind it. I also had no idea about the Motor Voter Bill, and I’m somewhat surprised that people were even against it! I suppose if your voter base is primarily older generations, you may not want to make voting more accessible to everyone, especially younger people. I think that the idea to put petitions for the Motor Voter Bill on the back of the longboxes was a really smart solution. It kept record stores happy, but also pushed forward a good cause that R.E.M. could get behind. It was especially smart since people would normally just get rid of the longboxes anyways, so it really cost the audience nothing to just sign and submit the petition! I also think wheeling in so many longboxes was a great way to tangibly show how many people supported the cause, rather than simply reporting the numbers. This was a great example of how smart design choices can really have an impact in the world. Great episode!

Oh goodness, hi there! Thank you, Anon! This made my day <3 Alternate universes to existing stories? I've been dragged through a bunch of new fandoms lately so I haven't thought of many recently-- but:

I was a part of a Cuphead x Fallout / toon apocalypse kind of a thing with Beacon Bright. Our community had so many plans for comics and whatnot but there was too much going on irl for a lot of people and we've had to set it aside. It's still a fun concept I occasionally revisit in my head.

I think Royalty AUs are fun? Make a bunch of characters royalty and nobility--what kind of kingdoms would they run? How would they do? Which other characters would fit certain jobs around a palace? There's also all the potential shipping drama under royal laws 👀

High School AU is an oldie but- can be goodie with the right characters? I've been dragged into a lot of those, haha. Imagining adult characters in their high school years is fun— what were they like before their time in their main story? Or young children characters in high school— how did they grow over the years, how different would they become?

I once had a dream about some Disneyland kinda open outdoor Toon Town kinda theme park except it was Five Nights at Freddy's characters and I've been looking for an excuse to share this? It was actually really wholesome with (Glamrock) Freddy giving kids tours around the park and introducing them to friends and (and family-? cousins?) in their own kinda areas-- does this even count as an AU? I'm counting it. >.>

Imagining my magical girls in other magical girl series-es— or non-magical-girl characters as magical girl characters is kinda fun— I’ve seen a few YouTubers do that. Like- what if my Pokémon gijinkas were thrown into something like Tokyo Mew Mew or Winx Club or whatevertheheck else- what would they be like- how would their powers and abilities translate over?

Honestly? AUs are really fun to see how various characters develop under different circumstances. Taking a character whose story is already planned out- what key moments would translate over to a completely different environment or time period, if they would at all? Would the characters still have the same personalities? Have the same morals? Really brushes up story building and character development skills! I’m here for it.

Why Casino Cups Is a SUBVERSIVE MASTERPIECE

a character who has never met his biological parents and doesn’t give A SHIT, doesn’t have romantic subplot and is possibly aroace which is great representation (Cuphead)

a character that DOES want to meet his biological parents but has motives that actually make sense with his character, is very nice but has deep seated character flaws that drive him through his internal conflict (Mugman)

neither of these “never met their parents” cases have the cliche dramatic“I CaN neVEr BE a FuLFiLleD aNd cOmPLEte PerSOn uNLesS I knOW WhO gAvE BirTH tO mEEeeEe!” motive

the Devil and King Dice aren’t one-dimensional bad guys. They have done bad things but are far from irredeemable as characters and can’t really be pegged as hero or villain. They have heavy backstories, understandable motives, and even good intentions sometimes.

I’ve seen so many Cuphead fanfics that (given that the game takes place in the 1930s) make the characters and/or undertones sexist and homophobic to make it “historically accurate” but Casino Cups just throws all that bull shtick straight out the window. A character’s gender is never made relevant or even mentioned outside of other characters using their pronouns and it is bursting with queer representation which I am so freakin grateful for.

the themes it deals with about death and moving on in life are so unique and thought provoking for a Cuphead au. I have never seen anyone make this take on the cups and their relationship with the potion, especially not with Mugman.

the lore is an absolute GOLD MINE. All Bright’s theories and headcannons about why the isle is so full of magical creatures and people with crazy powers is so intuitive that even the tiniest details from the game like light shining out of the Devil’s neck or King Dice’s green eye animations can spout rich and in-depth backstory and something new and interesting about the characters or the worldbuilding that had never even crossed my mind before. It makes these characters and the world that they live in so fun to learn about as I read the comic and always leaves me wanting more of these looney tuney byatches.

i of course have to mention Bright’s BEAUTIFUL art style. Honestly when I first saw their drawings of the cups I was a tad bit skeptical of how different they looked from their original designs in the game, but overtime I’ve grown to adore how grown up they look and their sick color schemes and card aesthetics.

I love this series so freakin much and I’m so proud of what it’s grown into and how far this religious toon town has come over the years. I can’t wait to see more now that Camodiel is taking the reigns. Remember to pack your tea, coffee, and just a little bit of whiskey and look out for soul collecting demons! I’ll see you at the casino!

This is the post I would like to show you all, there are so many that I have to pick the best one. I thought Cuphead would be a good start since the Cuphead Show is coming this fall in Netflix which I’m so excited about.

What I like about this is that it somehow show what it would look like if someone would make a music video with the song (the Cuphead rap battle). In fact, yellow-py on YouTube somehow made the best Cuphead characters when it comes to songs that inspired Cuphead. When it comes to ‘wake us up inside’ chorus, I just love when the cup-bros were facing the bosses who has yellowy-gold eyes as a sign a ready to fight the final round. The animatic looks closer to characters in the game, the best storyboards.

The final animatic for this was epic! I kept watching repeatedly like five times a day for two, full of colours and more details. It was definitely a legend for the game to have this fully made as a music video. (It’s like my dream came true.) I mean, each bosses rap their personality with no fear until the chorus hits which I find it like ‘okay, I’m ready for round two’. The song seems to be the best one ever with this fantastic animatic!

I just hope that the YouTuber would be planning on fully colouring and polishing this in the future because for the FlipaClip is the best app to use when you want to do some great ideas of animation. Now, I felt like this would be perfect for the Cuphead Show or as a music video…

Zaraegis is the best animator ever! I like when she created comics and animations when it comes to Cuphead. I like ‘Guity’, ‘Don’t Mess with Me’ and ‘Crown’ but the Final is the best one yet! I even had some theory about this battle and that King Dice is one badass gentleman and the Devil regrets it giving him some powers that turned against him. I wish there’s something I could do to help her get her mojo back… I mean, like… The moment when King Dice shuts the door, and the info pans up to show him with that sinister smirk was so badass. It's got to be almost my favourite moment in the finale before it head to ‘I am the people’ chorus. I love the whole thing, from beginning to end. All the songs fit the comics extremely well, the art style is awesome, and I was incredibly invested in the plot. While it’s sadded me a bit that the series ended, especially because I am a bit curious about what C&M has been up to in this verse (especially because they are most likely going to notice that the Devils Casino is now owned by KD), this was still a great conclusion non the less.

Bendy is still adorable tho) Villainous (just enjoying the characters rn) Been in and might come back to it: Cuphead (can’t stop loving them characters and King Dice and many other bosses are still in my heart sob) TF2 (Man I love the comic and them homicidal dorks) Sally Face (I loved the aesthetic of that game so much,,, lowkey want to retry making art of it) Hello Puppets (extremely underrated, them puppets be hella creepy and funny all in one- still stanning my boi Nick Nack lmao) SCP (Want to read more of them but I got so much I want to do nghhh;;) Always in my heart someway or another: Undertale (the fandom that made me and my irl best friend get closer :,> doesn’t matter how weird it got I got beautiful memories because of it (also my first cosplay was in this fandom!)) OFF (Might not show it- but I think I’ll die in this fandom dshdgsh) Hollow Knight (Too good too leave and it got some of my fave artists) Deltarune (I’ll surely get back into it when more comes out aaa) Underhero (extremely underrated but absolutely amazing characters, would recommend) Luigi’s Mansion 3 (found so many cool people and friends through it, it was a good time :,>) Smile for Me (comfort game right next to undertale sobs;; the style and characters are perfect and I love it to bits) Currently into: No Straight Roads (duh asdhdh- absolute current obsession right there) A Hat in Time (Lurking again in the fandom- want to do some more fanart cause I miss it;;) OFF (Always down for it) Lobotomy Corp/Library of Ruina (Another absolute obsession- and I’m excited for what LoR is gonna bring next aaa) Animal Crossing/ Enchanted Folk (Both amazing to relax and to look at cute as heck characters) Grey zone(?): Stardew Valley (havent played in so long;; but I used to be hella into it- completed the quests and married Elliot the dork poet sydsdujsh) Drawn to Life (I miss Wilfre and Heather so much sobs;;) Don’t Starve (Was hella into the lore and characters but didnt play much whoops;;) Pokemon (I mean,, it’s there but??? Idk if I can consider myself in the fandom?? Still love it in general) Darkwood (I love the game but havent been much into the fandom or drew much of it;;) Phew- and that’s all on my fandom history kinda ahahah. For games- I don’t play many;; I usually watch gameplays while drawing, writing or working to multitask. Games I played tho- Practically all Pokemon Gens starting from Platinum (with also serie spin-offs like pokemon ranger and one Mystery Dungeon), all Professor Layton Serie until either Azran Legacy or Miracle Mask (forgot which is the “ending”;;), OFF, Undertale and Deltarune, Animal Crossing Wild World and New Horizons, Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Lobotomy Corp and No Straight Roads. Plus a lot of other rpg maker games. Let’s say I’m for games with a lot of lore and story more than action eh;; Platformers and the like I can deal with ‘em but boss rushes? Cool but they kick my ass so much sdhsdh. OH and my best friend is getting me into playing Ace Attorney (we play together via discord) and lowkey getting into it-.. unfortunately I know some of the twists so heck;;;

MONTHLY MEDIA: April 2020

Another month of indoor media consumption! Here’s how April shook out.

……….FILM……….

Little Women (2019) We missed this in theatres and I only vaaaaguely remember the 1994 version. Anyway, this was fantastic. It was funny and dramatic and I’d really like to know the story better to fully appreciate what Greta Gerwig did with her interpretation. Also Amy’s “Your one beauty” comment is so ice cold that it only makes sense that she fall into the river to feel that same chill.

Onward (2020) Pretty good! All the fantasy and D&D-type elements were fun and the heart of the story worked. I’m not sure the characters really landed as well as some others Pixar films, but maybe that’s the case of this being the first in a series as compared to those that have sequels. Also I was not prepared for Colt’s hair reveal.

……….TELEVISION……….

Mad Men (Episode 1.01 to 1.10) WHOA! So this my first time watching the series (outside of a random ep I saw back in the day about selling convertibles after the JFK assassination) and this series is so good! Who knew?! I initially only liked the ad stuff and some of the office drama, but now I’m even on board for the home drama! Though I’m not sure I’ll ever get into whatever Pete is up to. Ugh Pete. At least there’s Betty shooting pigeons to console me.

Gravity Falls (Episode 1.01 to 1.08) Going back for some comfort food. I really value a project that knows what it wants to do, does it, and then concludes. There’s just something so...driven by creative...that I value about it.

McMillion$ (Episode 1.04 to 1.06) This documentary really delivered. It’s not as wild as Tiger King, but the depiction of everyone felt so much more real. It really took its time to show how widespread the impact of one individual really was and in times like these, I think that’s a welcomed reminder.

Love is Blind (Episode 1.03 to 1.11) Just bonkers. I wish they’d shared a little more of the show’s structure before everything started, as I would’ve liked to know where we were heading. Ending with weddings feels like an obvious choice, but I would’ve been way more interested in a Terrace House-styled approach (where we just get to see if these couples work after picking each other sight-unseen). There was lots of drama, sure, but it always felt more like reality tv than a social experiment.

The Brothers Cabal (Johannes Cabal #4) by Jonathan L Howard (Complete) More comfort food. I love this series and reading them out of order has been fun and so now I think I’ll go back to the first book. Oh and if you haven’t gotten into this series, it follows a brilliant necromancer (who’s awful) as he goes on a range of adventures that all tie together. They’re pulpy and witty and breezy and I can’t recommend them enough.

Hellboy Library Edition Vol 1 & 2 by Mike Mignola and John Byrne (vol. 1) (Complete) A friend of mine pointed out how Hellboy’s whole deal is “introduce threat, Hellboy punches it and wins” and I think he’s onto something. Though volume 2 really starts to get into that a little more. At the end of the day, these are pulpy stories and Hellboy’s character isn’t a detective or a schemer, he’s the heavy. He’s the the big gun and he’s a tradesman. He’s just doing a job and sometimes that job gets repetitive. I think there’s something to that.

Hellboy Library Edition Vol 3 & 4 by Mike Mignola, Richard Corben (vol.3), and others (vol. 4) (Complete) It’s interesting reading the behind-the-scenes stuff before and after each volume, as it really clears up why this era of Hellboy is...different. The movies really rocked the boat and the comic just feels less sure of itself (at least in volume 3). There’s great stuff, but it’s not as consistently strong. As for volume 4, I’m still baffled by the decision to start with the Crooked Man. To introduce us to someone other than Mignola drawing the comic is fine, but this story barely features Hellboy and it sets a really weird tone. Why not start off with the joint effort? Anyway I’m excited to get into 5 & 6 where I feel like it gels a little more and feels like everything is back on course.

……….GAMING……….

Cuphead: Don’t Deal With the Devil (Studio MDHR) I haven’t been nearly as frustrated by the game as I expected! Mind you I’m only in the second world and averaging B-, but I feel like the game plays fair and that I’m getting a little better. More importantly, it is all just so beautiful to look at. That background on the Genie level? Oof.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) Replaying on Master Mode was worth the price of the DLC but admit that I’m not really digging the other stuff (sword improvement and Champion’s Ballad). Maybe it’s because I replayed the entire game before jumping into the DLC and now it just feels like more of the same? I dunno. Also the refilling health is...infuriating. Anyway still love this game.

Neverland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The group continues to explore the island and have finally met a handful of mermaids! They’ve also discovered some hidden treasure and gotten acquainted with more of the region’s inhabitants...for better or worse.

D&D Homebrew Adventure (Menace of Merlin) It’s been...a few years since we’ve played, but the one upside to us staying indoors is it’s made our schedules waaaaaay more open to slot this in! The group now has the location of Merlin’s HQ but because it’s outside of time, they had to strike a deal with a chronomancer.

I wanted to put a few more characters into this, but I guess it is fine this way.

I kind of want to add that new character I found out about that is from that Learning With Pibby, I think it was yesterday when I found out about her and the Crossover show.

anyway this is a crossover drawing, but it also shows a theory I have about Gaster, like how the Red Soul that acts as our Proxy Soul,

is being used as a Puppet by Gaster, who we don’t know is using us as a puppet, and that gives him control of Kris as well.

but what if Gaster is Fun-Girl’s Puppet,

who is also using Chara as a Puppet as well...?

this took three days to work on, though maybe if I didn’t take that nap yesterday I could of finished this yesterday....

and yes the guy next to Fun-Girl, is Ayato Aishi.

I decided to give him Red Eyes, I still think that while we do have a choice to make Ayano Aishi go down the Pacifist Route and befriend her rivals who would then become a part of her party to save the school...

but if we choose to play as Ayato, there is no Pacifist Route and it’s full on Geno Route, you can’t even do a favor for the rivals or even befriend them.

what makes me believe this, is because of the info that I read about Ayato.

I’m still holding on to my Headcanon about Taro Yamada, that even if we do get a Game Over when we fail to stop Taro from accepting the rival’s love.

what we don’t know is that it is a trap and he plans to use the rival as a pure maiden sacrifice for the Lust Demon or Fun-Girl.

if Ayano frames a rival or spreads bad rumors about them, then Taro will turn them down because he needs a pure maiden to offer to the Lust Demon or Fun-Girl, it has to be either one of those two.

even if it isn’t perfect, I only added Blossom and Buttercup from PPGD, and Blossom from PPG.

The PPGD has been around before PPGZ, and it is the longest to run and to me, it is the best PPG Ever.

I still love the original PPG as well as the other versions of PPG, but because of certain reasons....Powerpuff Girls Doujinshi is my most favorite out of all of them, and like I said, The PPGD has been around before PPGZ even started, the Demshita! Powerpuff Girls Z first started around 2006, but the Crossover Comic series known as Powerpuff Girls Doujinshi started around 2004 and is ongoing.

The Purple Addison in this drawing, has the Blockette Twins with him.....

at first I wanted him to be just a OC, but I guess he would still kind of be that...

but I just thought about it today, that that Purple Addison,

could be how Spamton looked before, not sure if everyone would like that idea.

and yeah the Blockette Twins with him, are Add Blockers.

anyway while Gaster might be using the Player’s Proxy Soul as a Puppet,

it could turn out that Gaster is someone else’s Puppet.

and in a Crossover, the one who is pulling Gaster’s strings is none other than Fun-Girl from Yandere Simulator.

but in the canon of both Undertale and Deltarune, it could be someone else who is making Gaster use the Player’s Proxy Soul as a Puppet.

when I can, I will post this up over at the other place I post fan art at.

also if you look closely, you can see what looks like a small nameless OC next to Bill Cipher, haven’t really picked a name for them yet and I’m not sure if I will draw them again.

also Luz is holding the Magic Wand from Star Vs The Forces of Evil,

while she is also holding Amity’s hand, too.

in this drawing, Blossom from PPGD, is helping Lenny who is one of the Delightful Children From Down The Lane.

it be nice if they make that Galactic Kids Next Door, if it has some mature stuff in it, then they can show it on Adult Swim.

I can only hope that there be a new season of Disenchanted soon....

and enough of the Simpsons, Teen Titans Go and Spongebob.

I would be okay if they just all put those shows on DVD Collection.

I mean even if there are some parts in Teen Titans Go that I am not a fan of,

but some episodes are still okay, and one of my favorite characters on there is Raven.

the crossover movie that has them meet the other Teen Titans, was in my option awesome.

at least both versions of Starfire and Raven were more mature and better than the Classic Teen Titan Boys...

and they did show the other alternate reality versions of the Titans too.

even if I still like the Simpsons, and might watch them once in a while.

the stuff that involves them “predicting” future events, is just kind of scary.

it isn’t even the fun type, like with Kris eating the Pie from Deltarune.

I seriously would rather have Futurama get a new spin off series,

as well as have another season of Disenchanted very soon, and I can only hope it will be soon.

I mean some can get away with the super long series,

like Red Vs Blue, RWBY, Transformers, Pokemon, My Little Pony and any other series that makes it work.

but with Spongebob, the original creator wanted it to end but those who ran Nickelodeon went against his wishes, and he isn’t among the living anymore.

I’m okay with watching Spongebob once in a while, but the broken marathon that started months ago, pretty much ruined it for me.

it was so bad before, that I ended up crying....I really couldn’t take it.

it’s like I still like it now, but at the same time I hate it because those who had run it during that time, only showed the same episodes over and over, and didn’t try to change it to different episode for each day.

I can’t tell my family how bad it got for me, but I have gotten better so that’s good. but I have to put up with it most of the time or like go in another room.

I just wish they could just place the show on full season dvd collection.

I know I wish they would just hurry up and put all the seasons of SVTFOE on DVD or Blu-Ray on Amazon, but it doesn’t look like that is happening any time soon.....my Mom makes some “good points” about the Prime on there.

but it still makes me unhappy, I might not even get all the seasons of the series I watch if it isn’t going to be physically sold on DVD or Blu-Ray, if they are always gonna put it on Prime.

someone get Megatron....-_-

well I guess I can try to wait and hope things get better, and they stop misusing that Prime stuff for everything....

I might not like it, but it is viewed as good by my Mom and most of everyone else.

maybe things will get better, and I can only hope that SVTFOE will be on DVD or Blu-Ray soon....as well as any other Disney shows too.

and they stop making Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy as well as the Classic Powerpuff Girls so dang expensive, and make the prices a bit more fair.

I mean $40.58 would seem a bit more fair than how high then the prices I have seen for them before, which was really high....

at least the high price for that Season of Red Vs Blue was removed,

but I can only hope they restock it soon, doesn’t matter if it is just a DVD or Blu-Ray......so long as it isn’t freaking Prime only....

if something I want ends up being on Prime Video Only, I will have to wait for it to come out as DVD or Blu-Ray....

maybe I’m the only one who feels this way, I mean I guess not many would have a problem with that Prime on there.

just got to hope things get better and hope the series episodes I want to get,

will be sold physically and will be on DVD or Blu-Ray.

anyway I hope some of you like the theory about Gaster being the one who is using the Proxy Soul/Player and Kris as a Puppet, but then it turning out he too is a Puppet against his will as well, and the one who is using him as a Puppet could be anyone in the game, but in a crossover between Undertale/Deltarune and Yandere Simulator, it is Fun-Girl who is using him as her Puppet.

anyway I have to go now, I will try to sign on later to check out some art and other stuff on here.
