January 24th, 76AD, is the probable date of birth of Publius Aelius Hadrianus, who built Hadrian’s Wall.
Right let’s start with the myth, a lot of people believe it marks the border between Scotland and England, and never has. In fact, the wall predates both kingdoms, while substantial sections of modern-day Northumberland and Cumbria – both of which are located south of the border – are bisected by it.
This post is a lot longer than I would normally do, Hadrian himself ruled for over 30 years , and the Roman Empire were in Britain for over 350 years. I've taken this post from the Smithsonian web site as I'm tied up trying to do other things this morning
Stretching 80 miles from the Irish Sea in the west to the North Sea in the east, Hadrian’s Wall in northern England is one of the United Kingdom’s most famous structures. But the fortification was designed to protect the Roman province of Britannia from a threat few people remember today—the Picts, Britannia’s “barbarian” neighbours from Caledonia, now known as Scotland.
By the end of the first century, the Romans had successfully brought most of modern England into the imperial fold. The Empire still faced challenges in the north, though, and one provincial governor, Agricola, had already made some military headway in that area. According to his son-in-law and primary chronicler, Tacitus, the highlight of his northern campaign was a victory in 83 or 84 A.D. at the Battle of Mons Graupius, which probably took place in southern Scotland. Agricola established several northern forts, where he posted garrisons to secure the lands he’d conquered. But this attempt to subdue the northerners eventually failed, and Emperor Domitian recalled him a few years later.
It wasn’t until the 120s that northern England got another taste of Rome’s iron-fisted rule. Emperor Hadrian “devoted his attention to maintaining peace throughout the world,” according to the Life of Hadrian in the Historia Augusta. Hadrian reformed his armies and earned their respect by living like an ordinary soldier and walking 20 miles a day in full military kit. Backed by the military he had reformed, he quelled armed resistance from rebellious tribes all over Europe.
But though Hadrian had the love of his own troops, he had political enemies—and was afraid of being assassinated in Rome. Driven from home by his fear, he visited nearly every province in his empire in person. The hands-on emperor settled disputes, spread Roman goodwill, and put a face to the imperial name. His destinations included northern Britain, where he decided to build a wall and a permanent militarized zone between “enemy” and Roman territory.
Primary sources on Hadrian’s Wall are widespread. They include everything from preserved letters to Roman historians to inscriptions on the wall itself. Historians have also used archaeological evidence like discarded pots and clothing to date the construction of different portions of the wall and reconstruct what daily life must have been like. But the documents that survive focus more on the Romans than the foes the wall was designed to conquer.
Before this period, the Romans had already fought enemies in northern England and southern Scotland for several decades, Rob Collins, author of Hadrian's Wall and the End of Empire, says via email. One problem? They didn’t have enough men to maintain permanent control over the area. Hadrian’s Wall served as a line of defense, helping a small number of Roman soldiers shore up their forces against foes with much larger numbers.
Hadrian viewed the inhabitants of southern Scotland—the “Picti,” or Picts—as a menace. Meaning “the painted ones in Latin, the moniker referred to the group’s culturally significant body tattoos. The Romans used the name to refer collectively to a confederation of diverse tribes, says Hudson.
To Hadrian and his men, the Picts were legitimate threats. They frequently raided Roman territories, engaging in what Collins calls “guerilla warfare” that included stealing cattle and capturing slaves. Starting in the fourth century, constant raids began to take their toll on one of Rome’s westernmost provinces.
Hadrian’s Wall wasn’t just built to keep the Picts out. It likely served another important function—generating revenue for the empire. Historians think it established a customs barrier where Romans could tax anyone who entered. Similar barriers were discovered at other Roman frontier walls, like that at Porolissum in Dacia.
The wall may also have helped control the flow of people between north and south, making it easier for a few Romans to fight off a lot of Picts. “A handful of men could hold off a much larger force by using Hadrian’s Wall as a shield,” Benjamin Hudson, a professor of history at Pennsylvania State University and author of The Picts, says via email. “Delaying an attack for even a day or two would enable other troops to come to that area.” Because the Wall had limited checkpoints and gates, Collins notes, it would be difficult for mounted raiders to get too close. And because would-be invaders couldn’t take their horses over the Wall with them, a successful getaway would be that much harder.
The Romans had already controlled the area around their new wall for a generation, so its construction didn’t precipitate much cultural change. However, they would have had to confiscate massive tracts of land.
Most building materials, like stone and turf, were probably obtained locally. Special materials, like lead, were likely privately purchased, but paid for by the provincial governor. And no one had to worry about hiring extra men—either they would be Roman soldiers, who received regular wages, or conscripted, unpaid local men.
“Building the Wall would not have been ‘cheap,’ but the Romans probably did it as inexpensively as could be expected,” says Hudson. “Most of the funds would have come from tax revenues in Britain, although the indirect costs (such as the salaries for the garrisons) would have been part of operating expenses,” he adds.
There is no archaeological or written record of any local resistance to the wall’s construction. Since written Roman records focus on large-scale conflicts, rather than localized kerfuffles, they may have overlooked local hostility toward the wall. “Over the decades and centuries, hostility may still have been present, but it was probably not quite as local to the Wall itself,” says Collins. And future generations couldn’t even remember a time before its existence.
But for centuries, the Picts continued to raid. Shortly after the wall was built, they successfully raided the area around it, and as the rebellion wore on, Hadrian’s successors headed west to fight. In the 180s, the Picts even overtook the wall briefly. Throughout the centuries, Britain and other provinces rebelled against the Romans several times and occasionally seceded, the troops choosing different emperors before being brought back under the imperial thumb again.
Locals gained materially, thanks to military intervention and increased trade, but native Britons would have lost land and men. But it’s hard to tell just how hard they were hit by these skirmishes due to scattered, untranslatable Pict records.
The Picts persisted. In the late third century, they invaded Roman lands beyond York, but Emperor Constantine Chlorus eventually quelled the rebellion. In 367-8, the Scotti—the Picts’ Irish allies—formed an alliance with the Picts, the Saxons, the Franks, and the Attacotti. In “The Barbarian Conspiracy,” they pillaged Roman outposts and murdered two high-ranking Roman military officials. Tensions continued to simmer and occasionally erupt over the next several decades.
Only in the fifth century did Roman influence in Britain gradually dwindle. Rome’s already tenuous control on northern England slipped due to turmoil within the politically fragmented empire and threats from other foes like the Visigoths and Vandals. Between 409 and 411 A.D., Britain officially left the empire.
The Romans may be long gone, but Hadrian’s Wall remains. Like modern walls, its most important effect might not have been tangible. As Costica Bradatan wrote in a 2011 New York Times op-ed about the proposed border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, walls “are built not for security, but for a sense of security.”
Hadrian’s Wall was ostensibly built to defend Romans. But its true purpose was to assuage the fears of those it supposedly guarded, England’s Roman conquerors and the Britons they subdued. Even if the Picts had never invaded, the wall would have been a symbol of Roman might—and the fact that they did only feeds into the legend of a barrier that’s long since become obsolete.

“Attempt By Mob To Make Raid On Royal Palace,” Kingston Whig-Standard. October 31, 1932. Page 1. ---- Police Able to Hold Off Thousands of Unemployed in London ---- AT TRAFALGAR SQUARE ---- Dozen Injured as Orators Address Crowd From Base Nelson Column ---- LONDON, Oct 31— Mounted and foot police held off thousands of unemployed and “hunger marchers" from the King’s Palace and from official residences on Downing Street yesterday after a disturbance at Trafalgar Square.
Booed by unemployed and sympathisers, the police were forced to retreat at least once as the mob attempted to swarm streets leading to Buckingham Palace and Westminster. They were finally forced back into Trafalgar Square, where communistic and unemployed leaders were condemning the Government.
Today's casualty list hardly exceeded ten or twelve persons injured, although ambulances were kept busy for a while, as compared with the sixty or seventy Injured when “hunger marchers" from all parts of the country gathered on Thursday in Hyde Park.
The unemployed will attempt to present a petition before the House of Commons.
Thousand gathered for the mass meeting in Trafalgar Square, stormed entrances to the Mall (leading to Buckingham Palace at its west end) and Whitehall, which street is flanked by Government offices.
Led by a dark, bareheaded man screaming “Smash the Palace windows!" the crowd attempted first to rush Admiralty Arch, which commands the Mall, but failed when the massive iron gates were closed against them. They were pushed back by a police rush.
Whitehall Protected A crowd of many thousands then poured into Whitehall but were met by a stonewall of “bobbies” at the Honrse Guards' Parade (an open space off Whitehall, well known as the scene of the daily guard relief ceremony.) They were driven back.
Fighting broke out just as speech-making from the pedestal of massive Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square had ended. The crowd commandeered a taxi in an attempt to force through police lines. With a mighty surge, a company of bluecoats was driven back but only for a moment. Most of the crowd scurried to safety and the street was cleared within a few minutes, when the "bobbies" charged.
Then rioters closed in again on the isolated police squads of about thirty, who drew batons, appearing engaged in an even fight. Mounted police charged out from under Admiralty Arch and broke up the disturbance. At another place, a policeman was pulled from his horse, which kicked him while he was on the ground and he was removed to an ambulance.
Stones Are Thrown Some atones and sticks were thrown and windows at the head of Northumberland Avenue (a wide thoroughfare descending to the Thames Embankment) were broken. Iron grills in front of the Hotel Victoria were closed and a crowd stood Jjeering and booing liveried servants behind them.
A large automobile, carrying on elderly man and woman, forced its way to the hotel entrance and a mob turned on it, threatening the occupants, who were then escorted by a detail of police, who broke through the mob.
It was not until well after dark that the normal appearance was restored to Trafalgar Square vicinity and traffic was able to make way. By that time the unemployed, escorted by mounted police, had drawn off to the music of fifes and pipes.

i discovered the church of englands ‘daily hope line’ last night. its basically a freephone number with some prerecorded sermons and hymns that update daily. its lovely. im normally scared to go in churches because i am a wretched sinner but i truly did feel Gods love as i listened to the sermon about christ calling the fishermen. theres also some strange sleep asmr and ‘chair exercises’ on the number, elderly target audience i imagine. i need to find more numbers like this
i really, really, really do hate telephones. i do. i know we all do nowadays because we are a soy generation but i really do have an aversion to them. the mystic telling bone. its wicked. it has voices in it.
basically my networks telling me i need to make more calls because i make approximately 0 calls, and so im paying to make jus like 20 texts a month; so i was looking up random phone numbers to call. problem is, no call centres are open at midnight (my most active hours) theres phone numbers on everything, packages, books; everywhere. but none of them work except in the daytime (and i fear the daylight) i managed to get in touch with some kind of emergency vehicle service northumberland by deftly pressing random buttons. all i could choke out were the words ‘im sorry’ before hanging up. theres always suicide helplines. i do feel suicidal often, but not as much as before. i feel like id be wasting their time. an old man once told me, he volunteered for the samaritans hotline for a while, he said that women would ring up crying and saying they were going to kill themselves but as you talked to them youd realise that they were getting off on it and theyd tell you about how they were masturbating and there were repeat offenders who they had to keep blocking the numbers of. might start doing that. maybe. i dont want to waste peoples time for no reason. im just lonely! i dunno man, should i get into prank calling? not in a nasty way. jus for fun. idk, ive never liked prank calls. i just want someone to talk to i wish there was like a telephone omegle (like, when omegle was good) that jus hooks you up to a random other person and you have to chat
i need to find out how phone numbers work
as i understand it, there are usually 11 digits in a phone number. the first 2, or 4, or 5 have special meaning. that is as much as i can surmise naively. more research needed.

Visiting Hogwarts and Ancient Abodes: A Castle-to-Castle Trek for Movie and History Buffs
New Post has been published on https://eazycamping.net/visiting-hogwarts-and-ancient-abodes-a-castle-to-castle-trek-for-movie-and-history-buffs/
Visiting Hogwarts and Ancient Abodes: A Castle-to-Castle Trek for Movie and History Buffs
In far northeast England, the county of Northumberland has a higher concentration of castles than any other part of the country. If you’ve seen some of the most popular movies and TV shows of the last two decades—think Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Downton Abbey, Transformers, and the Netflix series The Last Kingdom—you’ll almost certainly recognize at least a few of them.
I recently hiked from castle to castle on a self-guided trek with Inntravel. I did all the walking, and they handled everything else, including a luggage transfer between hotels so I would only need a daypack to hike. I walked about 30 miles over five days, taking ample time to explore the castles. Along the way, I also made time for a boat tour of the nearby Farne Islands, where I was lucky enough to see seals, dolphins, puffins, and a variety of other marine birds.
If you’re a movie buff, a history buff, or both, this is the trip for you. Here are five of the spectacular castles you can expect to see.
1. Warkworth Castle
I started my trip at Warkworth Castle in the town of the same name. Inntravel arranged a cab from the Alnmouth train station, which has connections to London, and set me up at the Warkworth House Hotel, just minutes away from the ruins of a castle that dates back to the 1150s. Today, the site is managed by English Heritage, which occasionally runs events like the Knights’ Tournament to show you what life was like in the Middle Ages.
2. Alnwick Castle (aka Hogwarts)
After two nights in Warkworth, I hiked north through the seaside town of Alnmouth, then inland to Alnwick. It’s basically a pilgrimage site for Harry Potter fans—it plays the role of Hogwarts in the first two films and this is where Harry first learned how to ride a broom. In honor of that bit of film history, Alnwick Castle runs free broomstick training classes daily for all ages (unless there’s bad weather).
Alnwick—pronounced Ann-ick—has also been featured in Transformers: The Last Knight, Downton Abbey, and many other films. Also worth exploring is the nearby Alnwick Garden (you’ll need a separate ticket), which feels like something straight out of Alice in Wonderland with its leafy labyrinth and hedge-tunnel walkways.
The Percy family, which includes the Duke of Northumberland, has lived in Alnwick Castle since it was built over 700 years ago. The family’s living quarters, the State Rooms, are occasionally open for visitors and are an elaborate sight worth seeing.
I stayed at the Cookie Jar, a posh hotel just steps from Alnwick Castle (yes, your room will have a cookie jar in it). It’s stylish, has an incredible breakfast, and is super-convenient to walk around town.
3. Dunstanburgh Castle
From Alnwick, I took a bus to the seaside town of Craster. Just beyond the town, the ruins of Dunstanburgh stand tall and serve as quite the backdrop for a nearby golf course. Construction on the castle was begun in the early 1300s. Today, the land is owned by the National Trust, and the property is managed by English Heritage. If you’re traveling with a family and planning to visit more than a few such sites, you could save money with an annual membership, even if you don’t live full-time in the U.K.
From Dunstanburgh, I hiked onward across beaches with nesting Arctic terns to the town of Beadnell. I stayed two nights there at the beautiful Beadnell Towers hotel, which has an excellent dinner service.
4. Bamburgh Castle
Perhaps the grandest of them all, the privately owned Bamburgh Castle has changed hands extensively over its 1,400-year history. (You read that correctly. Construction on the castle started in the 500s.) More recently, you may have seen the castle in the opening scenes of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which was just released in June.
It was also featured in Transformers: The Last Knight and is the real-life inspiration for the Netflix series The Last Kingdom. Bamburgh Castle and Alnwick Castle are separately and independently opened but both are part of the Historic Houses network. So, if you plan to visit other castles, homes, or gardens in their collection, membership could save you a bit of cash.
5. Lindisfarne Castle
The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, famous for the handwritten Lindisfarne Gospels, is only an island during low tide. When the tide is out, you can walk or drive across the causeway. But a far better way to see it is to take a boat tour.
I walked from Beadnell to the picturesque Seahouses, where I caught a ride with Billy Shiel’s Boat Trips. We saw dolphins and seals on the way there and countless puffins on the way back. On land, you can explore Lindisfarne Castle, which was renovated into a holiday home for the founder of Country Life Magazine. Today, it’s managed by the National Trust and well worth a visit, even if you go only for the stunning Gertrude Jekyll Garden, which is free to visit.
The island is also the site of the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, which dates back to the 600s and is where the Lindisfarne Gospels were written. Today, it’s managed by English Heritage, and the gospels can be seen at the British Library in London. I highly recommend adding a day to your trip so you can explore everything here without being on a time crunch.
Pro Tip for Ultimate Flexibility
If you’re planning to do this trip as part of a bigger tour around the United Kingdom and Europe, you may be able to save on train tickets with a Eurail pass or Interrail if you’re a resident of the U.K. or Europe. While some routes require seat reservations, most don’t, so you can leave your departure date and time open-ended if you fall in love with a place you’re visiting and want to add an extra day or two to your trip without losing your train fare.
Editor’s Note: Inntravel hosted our writer on this trip and Eurail/Interrail comped a train pass to cover her travel expenses.

King Richard III Was Defeated and Killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field, Thus Ushering in the House of Tudor. August 22, 1485
Image: Battle of Bosworth, as depicted by Philip James de Loutherbourg (1740–1812) (Wikimedia Commons.)
On this day in history, in the last battle of the War of the Roses, King Richard III was defeated and killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field by Henry Tudor, the Earl of Richmond. After the battle, the royal crown, which Richard wore into action, was plucked out of a bush and placed on Henry's head. His crowning as King Henry VII initiated the rule of the Tudor dynasty over England, one that would last until Queen Elizabeth died in 1603.
History Daily: 365 Fascinating Happenings Volume 1 & Volume 2 - August 22, 1485
Created of dynastic conflicts within the English Houses of York and Lancaster, the Wars of the Roses began in 1455 when Richard, Duke of York, clashed with Lancasterian forces loyal to the mentally unstable King Henry VI. Fighting continued over the next five years, with both sides seeing periods of ascendancy. Following the death of Richard in 1460, the leadership of the Yorkist cause passed to his son Edward, Earl of March. A year later, with the aid of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, he was crowned Edward IV and secured the throne with a victory at the Battle of Towton.
When Edward IV died unexpectedly in 1483, his brother, Richard of Gloucester, assumed the position of Lord Protector for the twelve-year-old Edward V. Securing the young king in the Tower of London with his younger brother, the Duke of York, Richard approached Parliament and argued that Edward IV’s marriage to Elizabeth Woodville was invalid making the two boys illegitimate. Accepting this argument, Parliament passed the Titulus Regius, which saw Gloucester crowned as Richard III. The two boys vanished during this time. Many nobles soon opposed Richard III's reign, and in October 1483, the Duke of Buckingham led a rebellion to place the Lancastrian heir Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, on the throne. Thwarted by Richard III, the collapse of the uprising saw many of Buckingham's supporters join Tudor in exile in Brittany.
That Christmas, Henry announced his intention to marry the late King Edward IV's daughter, Elizabeth of York, to unite the Houses of York and Lancaster and advance his claim to the English throne. On April 16, 1485, Richard's wife, Anne Neville, died, clearing the way for him to marry Elizabeth instead.
This threatened Henry's efforts to unite his supporters with those of Edward IV, who saw Richard as a usurper. Richard's position was undercut by rumors that he had Anne killed to allow him to marry Elizabeth, which alienated some of his supporters. Eager to prevent Richard from marrying his prospective bride, Henry mustered 2,000 men and sailed from France on August 1. Landing at Milford Haven seven days later, he quickly captured Dale Castle. Moving east, Henry worked to enlarge his army and gained the support of several Welsh leaders. Alerted to Henry's landing on August 11, Richard ordered his army to muster and assemble at Leicester.
Before leaving France, Henry communicated with Thomas Stanley, Baron Stanley, and his brother Sir William Stanley to seek their support. Upon learning of the landing at Milford Haven, the Stanleys had mustered around 6,000 men and had effectively screened Henry’s advance. During this time, he continued to meet with the brothers to secure their loyalty and support. Arriving at Leicester on August 20, Richard united with John Howard, Duke of Norfolk, and Henry Percy, Duke of Northumberland.
Pressing west with around 10,000 men, they intended to block Henry’s advance. Henry, an inexperienced military leader, turned command of his army over to John de Vere, Earl of Oxford.
After exchanges of arrows, the two forces collided, and hand-to-hand combat ensued. Oxford's soldiers began to gain the upper hand by forming his men into an attacking wedge. With Norfolk under heavy pressure, Richard called for aid from Northumberland. This was not forthcoming, and the rearguard did not move. While some speculate that this was due to personal animosity between the duke and king, others argue that the terrain prevented Northumberland from reaching the fight. The situation was worsened when Norfolk was struck in the face with an arrow and killed.
With the battle raging, Henry decided to move forward with his lifeguard to meet the Stanleys. Spotting this move, Richard sought to end the fight by killing Henry. Leading forward a body of 800 cavalry, Richard skirted around the primary battle and charged after Henry's group. Richard slammed into them and killed Henry's standard bearer and several bodyguards. Seeing this, Sir William Stanley led his men into the fight to defend Henry. Surging forward, they nearly surrounded the king’s men. Pushed back towards the marsh, Richard was unhorsed and forced to fight on foot. Fighting bravely to the end, Richard was finally cut down. Learning of Richard’s death, Northumberland's men began withdrawing, and those battling Oxford fled.
Losses for the Battle of Bosworth Field are not known with any certainty though some sources indicate that the Yorkists suffered 1,000 dead, while Henry’s army lost 100. The accuracy of these numbers is a subject of debate. After the battle, legend states that Richard's crown was found in a hawthorn bush near where he died. Henry was crowned king later that day on a hill near Stoke Golding. Henry, now King Henry VII, had Richard’s body stripped and thrown over a horse to be taken to Leicester. There it was displayed for two days to prove that Richard was dead. Moving to London, Henry consolidated his hold on power, establishing the Tudor Dynasty. Following his official coronation on October 30, 1485, he pledged to marry Elizabeth of York. While Bosworth Field effectively decided the Wars of the Roses, Henry was forced to fight again two years later at the Battle of Stoke Field to defend his newly won crown.

Ferry travel resuming between P.E.I. and Nova Scotia after mechanical issue fixed
Ferry service between Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia is set to resume on July 1.
Trips between Wood Islands, P.E.I., and Caribou, N.S., were cancelled in mid-June due to a mechanical issue with the service's sole vessel, the MV Confederation.
Mark Wilson, the senior vice-president of Northumberland Ferries, says the vessel has been cleared for safe return to service now that a replacement part has been delivered, installed and tested.
The service's other vessel, the MV Holiday Island, was removed permanently last July after a fire in its engine room forced about 230 passengers off the ship near the Wood Islands terminal.
Northumberland Ferries says another ferry, the MV Saaremaa 1, is currently in drydock in Quebec but is expected to arrive in P.E.I. in early July and enter service by July 15 for peak season.
The company says service between P.E.I. and Nova Scotia will resume with four daily round trips until the MV Saaremaa 1 is able to join the mix.
"We appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers and all those affected by the out-of-service period over the past two weeks," Northumberland Ferries said in a statement.
"We look forward to resuming this important service in time for Canada Day weekend."

Oprah Winfrey Host Classic shirt
Florence Pugh cut her teeth in the Oprah Winfrey Host Classic shirt it is in the first place but 2017 adaptation of Lady Macbeth, a Victorian thriller set in rural Northumberland which saw her play a young murderess. For her first Netflix project, the Don’t Worry Darling star is going back to her period drama roots as the lead in the adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s novel The Wonder. Ahead of the film’s premiere, a quick recap of everything we know so far about the project. Author Emma Donoghue received an Oscar nomination for her gut-wrenching 2015 screenplay for Room, which revolves around a 20-something being held captive by her abuser. In her forthcoming adaptation of The Wonder, meanwhile, it’s an entire community that’s taken a victim hostage—at least emotionally. Director Sebastián Lelio’s film opens in 1862—roughly a decade on from The Great Famine—as English nurse Lib (Pugh) arrives in the Irish midlands with a peculiar task: to watch an 11-year-old girl named Anna (Kíla Lord Cassidy), whose family insists she has been subsisting on “manna from heaven” for months now. Her job over her eight-hour stints monitoring the child? To determine whether she is a saint or a fraud. Yet, as Anna’s health begins to decline, Lib, a Nightingale who tended to soldiers during the Crimean war, and Will (Tom Burke), a journalist for The Daily Telegraph reporting on “the miracle girl,” try to intervene—only to be met with constant resistance from her family, the Church, and the powers that be in the village. It’s a chilling watch, and a searing indictment of religious fervor.
