Daily conversation in Zhao Yunlan's apartment
Zhao Yunlan with heart-shaped eyes: "Shen Wei is so beautiful, like a gorgeous oil painting."
Da Qing playing with his cat toy: "Ok?"
Zhao Yunlan: "He is so kind, the most kind-hearted person I have ever known."
Da Qing: "I know."
Zhao Yunlan: "He is so strong, so powerful, so capable."
Da Qing: "I know!"
Zhao Yunlan: "Oh, he is so-"
Da Qing throwing his cat toy at Zhao Yunlan: "I SAID I KNOW, SHUT THE FUCK UP! STOP TORTURING ME! HE IS RIGHT NEXT DOOR, GO FIND HIM!"

Ep 30-31: Ancient Makeup
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In "Strategies of Zhao" from "Zhan Guo Ce", women from Zheng wore makeup on their cheeks and brows. Cheek and brow makeup already existed in that era and were part of women's daily life. Men also used makeup.
Tumblr media
Xuande Emperor Zhu Zhanji wears a sun hat, pearl earrings, a military outfit with arrow sleeves, and a suit of yellow armor. How fashionable.
Tumblr media
On this screen of 18 scholars [Qi Xiu Lei Gao], we can see a man wearing a wangjin, which was promoted by Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang. One day, Zhu Yuanzhang was on an anonymous trip to Shenle Temple. He saw a Taoist priest tie a wangjin under the lamp. Curious, he asked, "What might this be?"
Answered the Taoist priest, "It's a wangjin. Wrapped your hair with it and the hair shall remain tidy."
Zhu Yuanzhang was delighted. He thought the item bore the meaning of "unifying the land". He then decreed it be worn. According to "The History of Ming: Carriages and Clothing", all men of the Ming Dynasty, regardless of status, all wore a wangjin.
Shen Congwen made an inference after observing the colors of the outfits shown in "The Night Revels of Han Xizai", that it was produced between the fall of Southern Tang and the Chunhua era. Who can accomplish that now?
.
Recreating those makeup styles, the cultural meaning it carries, the social background behind the changes of outfit designs and makeup styles etc need to be paid attention to.

"Hands as delicate as tender shoots, skin smooth and fair with shine. Neck slender like that of a swan, teeth white and lined-up perfectly.
A plump forehead and long thin curvy brows, a smile so enchanting, her eyes so alluring.")
In "Odes of Wei, the Classic of Poetry", the sung Princess Zhuang Jiang who was so graceful and gorgeous was the embodiment of the classical beauty of Chinese women. Over centuries, generations of women have pursued beauty tirelessly, leaving behind countless wonderful dreams created with poetry.
"Her waist is tied with a white silk stripe. Her ears are adorned with lustrous earrings. Her fingers are slim like the tips of a green onion. Her lips are red as if covered in vermilion."
That is the beauty of a woman's solemn makeup.
"Eyes filled with shyness. A faint smile with her red lips."
Such is the beauty of bashfulness.
"Mountains on the screens glitter with the morning sunshine, her fair hair on her fair skin is like a cloud over a snowy field. She lazily rises to paint her brows, and finally grooms after a long delay."
That is a woman's beauty at leisure.
"Her clothes flowy like clouds and her face gorgeous like blooming flowers. The morning dew blown by the spring breeze enriches the color of the blossom."
This is a woman's alluring beauty.
"Raindrops fall on her rosy cheeks, mingling with tears and her rouge."
This is the beauty of a woman's tearful countenance.
The beauty of Chinese women is reflected in the harmony and coordination of hairstyles, makeup, attire, footwear, and accessories. It forms a complete and systematic women's boudoir culture, leaving behind beautiful and captivating legends.
(Check out this gorgeous traditional style cosmetics chest btw😍)

The central part of Zhao Yunlan’s apartment is spacious to the point of being weirdly empty. That makes some sense, given that it’s also his workout space and he doesn’t want a bunch of crap getting in the way while he’s kickboxing. At the same time, though, I can’t shake the feeling that it’s just a little hollow.
Of note:
The sheer amount of alcohol. I actually really like the table with all the underlit beer bottles in it, and I’d say the odds are very good that every bottle in there is long expired; a table like that is made for decoration, not active storage (especially if it’s sturdy enough to sit on). But then he’s got that whole bookshelf full of booze. I’ve been to bars with smaller selections on hand. Very good way to suggest someone has problematic drinking habits without actually showing him shitfaced all the time.
Bucket seats. There are two little stools made from small metal drums that have “USINE” (French for “factory”) stamped on the side. One has an American flag on its seat; the other has Marilyn Monroe’s face. I don’t think Shen Wei was paying much attention when he grabbed the latter for his nighttime post-”gastritis” vigil, or he would have been very awkward about it.
Tiny trashcan. It’s the same model he has in his office.
The gap between the couch and the wall. Why is this driving me up the wall? I don’t know, maybe because I’m a maximalist. I don’t care; put a little table in there, or shove the couch up against the wall, or something.
The little bulletin board. Dammit, the camera never gets close enough to show what’s written on those notecards. I can barely even see that there is stuff written there, much less start to make out what it is. Are they daily affirmations? Handy-dandy reference spells? His hookups’ phone numbers? The world’s most forgotten to-do list? Who can say!
Shelves below the bulletin board. The one on the left has what looks like a nice leather notebook with a metal clasp, but not a lock. The book in the middle compartment switches out between Furniture (with the N and E on the cover) and Furniture History, I guess depending on which one he thinks makes him look smarter today. The rightmost one seems to have a short candle with another one of those notecards tacked behind it, which I would say is 50/50 instructions on how to use it for a magical spell or a reminder to burn it when his place gets too funky-smelling.
Three plants on the windowsill. Honestly, that is more plant than I would have given Zhao Yunlan credit for being able to keep alive. Maybe Da Qing is responsible for them instead. (I actually first thought the one on the right was a little pot of cat grass.) Every now and then, he slaps a little sticker to the cactus that says HELLO MY NAME IS ZHAO YUNLAN.

Please help me out by yelling at me a bit to write the damn fic already. I was gonna have Zhao Yunlan shout down a necromantic god-emperor for hurting his husband, I've got the outline and all, just. Zero energy to fill in the gaps.
👀
Necromantic god-emperor? What are you waiting for?! The gaps are the true hell, I know, I'm back writing Chapter 8 and 9 and to fill in the gaps of 30k is... yeah. But please, think about your poor friends. Just to begin with, I look for fics on a daily basis and almost never we got a new (good) fic for Guardian fandom - and I already know you write damn well, so you can't just tease me like that about... wait, how the hell someone got to hurt Shen Wei????? Sir, what do you need for the gaps??? I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS HERE

2022’s Guide To China’s Biggest Celebrity Scandals
2022’s Guide To China’s Biggest Celebrity Scandals
China’s expanding scrutiny of celebrity culture has serious implications for luxury groups’ marketing efforts in the mainland. In recent years, high-end houses have become heavily dependent on homegrown idols to promote their collections and connect with local consumers. Stans in China are often willing to buy anything to ensure the commercial success of their favorite celebrity and the fan economy is one of the most active in the world. To get more chinese entertainment news, you can visit shine news official website.
However, Beijing has not been slow to issue fines or blacklist any stars they deem to be violating the law. From sexual misconduct and soliciting prostitution to tax evasion and illegal advertising, 2022 was no exception and saw a number of big domestic personalities hitting the headlines for unwanted reasons. Here’s Jing Daily’s roundup of the biggest celebrity scandals of the year that was. First up is disgraced American Canadian pop star Kris Wu who was back in the headlines in November. The mega-celebrity was charged with raping three women between November and December 2020 as well as found guilty of assembling a crowd to engage in sexual activity — which is a crime in China. He was also fined $83 million (580 million RMB) for $23 million (160 million RMB) in tax evasion. In all, Wu received a 13-year sentence and will be deported from the country after serving the prison time (as is typical for foreign criminals).
When announced, the hashtag “Kris Wu sentenced 13 years in the first trial” received more than 10 billion views on Weibo, becoming the top trending topic on the social media platform at that time. In March, Chinese A-list actor Deng Lun, the face of houses such as Bulgari and Roger Vivier, was fined $16.6 million (106 million RMB) for tax evasion by the authorities. According to the Fourth Inspection Bureau of Shanghai Taxation Bureau, Deng Lun made false declarations through fictitious businesses to mask the nature of his income between 2019 and 2020. His evaded personal income tax totaled $7.47 million (47.6 million RMB) and other underpaid personal income tax amounted to $2.18 million (13.9 million RMB).
Deng’s behavior — compounded by the wide wealth gap between the VIP and ordinary Chinese workers — triggered public anger. In light of this, local companies were especially quick to terminate partnerships with him. Market regulators in Guangzhou fined actress Jing Tian in May for appearing in a misleading campaign for health food company Infinite Free and banned her from any more deals for three years. The endorsement was said to violate China’s advertising law, which states that ordinary food cannot be promoted for having therapeutic functions. The 33-year-old was fined a total of $1.08 million (7.22 million RMB), and the brand’s fruit and vegetable candy products were pulled from major e-commerce platforms.
At the time, Jing, who starred in Pacific Rim: Uprising and Kong: Skull Island, was promoting labels like Shu Uemura, Dior skincare, and Bulgari fragrance, and had just added Roger Vivier to her roster in March. July saw the Weibo hashtag #Yuan Bingyan’s company fined 978,000 RMB for tax evasion# top the microblogging platform’s Hot Search list, racking up over 690 million views at time of publishing. It followed the news that the 30-year-old actor Yuan Bingyan, renowned for her leading role in the C-drama “Love and Redemption,” became the latest in a long line of stars (namely Zhao Wei, Viya, and Deng Lun) to be slapped with a penalty by tax regulators — in this case, to the tune of $146,000 (978,000 RMB). Lastly, high-profile Chinese actor Li Yifeng became the latest in a long line of A-listers to face the fate of being canceled at home. In September, Li — who was then representing Prada, Panerai, Remy Martin, and more — was arrested by the Beijing police on charges of “soliciting prostitution on multiple occasions.” According to the Weibo post from the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau, the 35-year-old (over 60 million followers on Weibo), has admitted to the crime. In the aftermath, a dozen companies, both domestic and international had cut ties, including Prada, Panerai and Luk Fook Jewelry.

RATA: new grounds, new sounds
An idea that has been brewing in my head since 2019 when Akileshwar Vm & Esplanade posed a challenge to me for a special showcase at the now ready Singtel Waterfront Theatre.
The world is a different place right now and we are definitely different beings since then. Most of us are still trying hard to navigate this familiar yet strange mental states in our daily lives.
It is with this uncertainty I seek the assistance of Cheryl Ong, Azrin Abdullah, Rizman Putra, Chew Wei Shan & Andy Chia to plunge into a sonic abyss with me to find some versions of our new selves, which eventually birthed RATA Orkestra. With Cui Yin being our eyes and ears from the outside, the explorations have led us to something and the journey in itself is very hard to put into words.
Can't wait to share this new world we have been building with more help from Brandon Tay, Akbar Syadiq, Adrian Tan, Rong Zhao.
29 - 31 Dec 2022 7:30P Singtel Waterfront Theatre Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay
Tickets Here
Boasting an eclectic line-up of established musicians from diverse fields, RATA Orkestra makes its debut with RATA: new grounds, new sounds (RATA), a visceral audiovisual experience in the new Singtel Waterfront Theatre at Esplanade.
Named for the Malay word rata, meaning “flat” or “even’, RATA Orkestra is a project by Safuan Johari featuring Azrin Abdullah (oud), Andy Chia (dizi, didgeridoo, electronics), Cheryl Ong (percussion), Safuan Johari (electronics), Rizman Putra (vocals) and weish (vocals). This new ensemble aims to create new aural topographies by gathering diverse local and international musicians to experiment with collaborative compositions, break old boundaries and new grounds across the traditional, the experimental, and the popular, and create a transcultural ambient soundscape of harmonious interplays and poignant discordances.
A production two years in the making, RATA also features guest artist Nova Ruth (vocals) and multimedia designer Brandon Tay. Audience members will also move around the performance space, to experience and encounter the visuals and sounds from various corners.
RATA invites you to mark the end of the year and this season of change with an opportunity to discover something new and ground-breaking.
A programme of In New Light – A Season of Commissions, in celebration of Esplanade’s 20th anniversary.

Daily favorite lines:
When Shen Wei had given up on receiving an answer and was about to suggest that they return to bed, Zhao Yunlan spoke at last. He didn’t turn toward Shen Wei, just stared unseeingly ahead. “If you hadn’t met me in the past,” he said slowly, “If you hadn’t known me first when I was pretending to be the hero Kunlun, if I hadn’t been kind to you when you were so young and vulnerable, do you think -- would you still --” He stopped and shook his head. “Ah, never mind, never mind.”
“Zhao Yunlan,” Shen Wei said, the beloved syllables rolling easily from his tongue, “are you asking me if I would have still fallen in love with you if we’d never met in the past?”
Without you

Shen Wei Serving Lewks, Part 6
(Masterpost)
Look 25
This look features a blue shirt and a cream-colored jacket, in a slightly more open weave than his other looks. It also includes some type of trousers that we never get a good look at. If he’s wearing jeans with this look, that’s hot, but who knows? How can we properly fetishize Shen Wei when they won’t lovingly run the camera lens over his entire body?
Tumblr media
The collar of this look is cut in a straight horizontal line above the band, which makes a nice triangle out of Shen Wei’s sternum area. This look goes well with barely-contained anger at your reckless boyfriend who thinks everything is a fucking joke.
Tumblr media
Bonus Look 1: ZY’s new hairstyle
This look features Zhao Yunlan’s new hairstyle and new relationship status. The last time we see him with his bangs over his forehead is this conversation.
Tumblr media
Shen Wei was definitely too excited and unable to sleep, and definitely came over to get the thing he needed.
We can tell because the very next time we see Zhao Yunlan he has new bangs, bangs that reveal almost his whole face.
Tumblr media
These bangs say: every time I comb my hair, thoughts of you get in my eyes, thoughts of pretty you and me, Erotic City come alive.
(More behind the cut!)
When we next we see Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan together after that hallway flirtation, they are conspicuously intimate, as they share a couch while they talk through a problem. Shen Wei still has stressed-out body language, of course, because he is Shen Wei, but his glasses are off and he doesn’t shy away from Zhao Yunlan’s sprawling legs and bare feet.
Tumblr media
Later that same day they add housecleaning and other domesticity to the mix, and Zhao Yunlan notes that Shen Wei’s powers include “telekinetically closing the door and curtains,” which he presumably discovered when they were in a particular hurry to have some privacy.
Tumblr media
Let’s roleplay! // You’re the maid.
Look 26
Tumblr media
 1. This fucking shirt again 2. This fucking guy again.
Homophobic boss thinks Shen Wei can’t find time to teach while he’s shacking up with Zhao Yunlan working on ZY’s task force.  Counterpoint: Shen Wei’s students think his class is fun, so he gets to keep his job. That is totally how academia works.
Tumblr media
After too many episodes of blue, grey, and Swamp Coat, this shirt has grown on me. Look how nice Shen Wei looks in white.
This waistband, however, does not belong on any person under 70 years old ever.
Tumblr media
Look 27
This is one of Shen Wei’s favorite looks, but this time he has accessorized it with rain.
Tumblr media
Kneeling in bad weather is how you declare your love in c-dramas.
Running the camera lens over Shen Wei’s entire body is how directors declare their love for the audience.
Tumblr media
Capturing this in 30fps is how I declare my love for you, dear reader.
Look 28
Here’s his thinnest white shirt again, this time with a black wraparound jacket? sweater? jacket sweater that we see here, and then never see again. It has a giant U on the chest, or perhaps that is contrast stitching for an interior pocket.
Tumblr media
This outfit features this rare, utterly beatific smile, directed, of course, at Zhao Yunlan.
Tumblr media
Look 29
Tumblr media
This look features a loose blue shirt with boob pockets, worn with baggy corduroy trousers. The shirt is the color of the water on the AU island where they are going to spend their honeymoon. This look says, you bruised my ribcage last night and I don’t want to wear anything tight today.
Tumblr media
This is an appropriate outfit for watching your lover sacrifice himself for the greater good.
Tumblr media
Shen Wei hopes this doesn’t become a habit.
Bonus Couple Moment
“Hei Lao Ge, Are you listening to me?”
“...”
Tumblr media

i feel like i or someone else has already said this exact thing so apologies if i'm treading familiar ground but i absolutely adore that shen wei and zhao yunlan take time out of a hostage negotiation to bicker about whether zhao yunlan can visit dixing again. HUGE old married couple vibes. especially coming right after their Battle Couple fight with the fire guy, so you get that great in-sync-against-a-common-enemy-yet-affectionately-at-odds-over-daily-domestic-concerns atmosphere going. "i can go to dixing if i want to." "if i say you can't go, you can't go." like geez guys get a fucken room, some people are trying to do crime over here and you are majorly killing their vibe.

27.8.21 Update
An advice that this is for the mentally strong.
1. Zhao Wei’s(ZW) fandom ban + Withdrawal from her company
“According to Qichacha app (a Chinese app that provides information about companies and enterprises eg. management personnel, stocks etc), Beijing Prince Culture Communication Co., Ltd., which is 70% controlled by Zhao Wei, withdrew from the ranks of shareholders of many companies: the company that recently withdrew was Shanghai Tongtongxin Culture Communication Co., Ltd. with the head person in-charge, changed from Zhao Wei to Wei Qiying. It is reported that Beijing Prince Culture Communication Co., Ltd is a performance agency under Zhao Wei and has signed Zhang Zhe Han and other artists.” - News
For those who know about the video (cut version about ZW), do move on to part 2.
Background:
ZW’s case actually started from an insider information (for those who understand Chinese and have not/did not watch the famous 观棋有语127 CUT version, the link underlined: start at 18:50).
For international audience who had not read the CUT translation/did not know about this: it was a famous insider information released on 16 August 2021 (the day ZH closed his Instagram) on Bilibili (Youtube equivalent. The nature of this channel is not Entertainment Industry insider information but International Politics/Military, it just so happens that one of the member has connection in the Entertainment Industry and ZH’s case was huge that period so he added what he know about it).
It was hinted that ZW was involved with ZH’s accident (negatively)
= As ZH’s management company, the first plan they advised when ZH’s news was out, was to not release an apology statement (to remain silent and use capital to push down this news), certain fans (might be in the industry) demanded an apology letter from ZH (but being the inexperienced-in-this-ZH who was also in a shocked state at point of time, the Management team wrote the apology letter (yet to release draft). ZW was not very happy with this plan, so revisions were made before the final public apology was released.
The consensus is that someone ‘bad’ is within the Management Team, and it could possibly be ZW. (For those who have watched original version, feel free to add on more, if any - there seem to be a part I missed out. For international readers, feel free to come back again for updates - it will be in purple)
Further insider information about ZH in his case (comment section: A_Kooist*孤*勇 Link here - commenter's translation)
2. Current Entertainment Industry Campaign
Major Campaign: #饭圈清浪 (fan quan qing lang = literally translated as ‘rice circle clearance = ‘fandom clearance')
Please read this major campaign’s purpose here first (for international fans, use Google’s page translation, the translation is good enough. This article was released on 15 June 2021) This, is essentially a good campaign.
Trends in the name of the greater campaign have emerged ever since, such as the recent ‘Do not give second chances to immoral celebrities (aka no comebacks)’ - this also includes ZW (her rising flag dress incident - look for rumors and controversy part, other celebrities as well eg. Fan Bing Bing, Jackie Chan’s son etc), ‘Educate all celebrities on political affairs’, ‘Prohibiting 16 years old and below from appearing in livestreams’ etc. Some movements seem debatable, some like settling the IWA is very much loved, however, this is an issue we international fans can only watch and keep silent and think about the 40%.
Reminder again to be silent because remember that trend topics are bought daily, and a wonder in the trend I saw was ‘GZfansaregainstthismovement’.
Today, 27.8.21, the official authorities released their top 10 agenda in this movement.
*Note: Since Google Translate translates the movement as ‘Clearance and Rectification of Chaos in the 'rice circle'’ - will use this term in the translation below. Also, in brackets are my notes (left swipe reading)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source here (in Chinese)
For the first part - removing rankings is reported on The Guardian as well, source here.
For further reading into part 4 - using algorithms to create fake user accounts/false impressions etc, source here
Note that although they did not address the IWA issue (except their behaviour), the implementations by the Government is generally realistic. This targets real fan's problematic behaviours and they are real problems among the China-Chinese fandom.
Implications to ZW's case:
ZW's withdrawal means she/the company is drawing a line that ZW is no longer a part of the company = whatever happens to her, will be none of the company's concern.
It might be due to her japan rising flag dress in the past or one of the (unofficially announced) trend 'do not give second chance to immoral celebrities' in place or her ongoing 'bad deeds' behind the scenes.
Implications to ZH
First of all, for ZH's case, despite being an obvious ploy by the Capitals, the nature of his case is still political ignorance (which as a public figure, is still not a right influence). Therefore, looking at the industry's landscape and campaign, it is hard/almost impossible to see ZH back in front of the camera these few years. It is not the right time nor the right choice to have a comeback.
Secondly, with the change in Management, have to admit that right now, I have no idea how this will turn out. This only warrants more observations before any implications can be made for ZH and the whole scene.
The campaign is also at its fresh stage so it is hard to know to what extent this will push all affected celebrities, even celebrities who are still in the entertainment industry. At the moment, they are now getting sent to 'Public Figure' classes - which highlights what they should do/not do. And management personnel are checking all their celebrity's accounts (to avoid cancellation of that scale again).
Even though there aren't any official news about the underlying cause - Capitals, they are currently probably being investigated. Perhaps because they are organisations and with ZW's case, it seems a longer crackdown is required (Capitals side definitely requires more time), so waiting for this side of the story to come out or any other relevant ones.
For now, same advice, stay silent. For those who are affected, take time off. For those who are mentally strong, we'll see.
Bonus
Maybe some of you knew, but I only know it today. 4 days ago was apparently the 100th day Xiao Yu slipped.
We are still the same.

but even the most ardent government loyalist can't possibly be thrilled by the Zhao Wei situation as the opaque way in which it's being handled reveals so much weakness.
compare with the takedown of Zhang Zhehan, admittedly a relatively minor figure without strong political connections: public arguments on social media followed by a strong critique in People's Daily that prompts a response from society at large, all carried out in the open with relatively free debate (as long as everyone falls in line, of course).
meanwhile Jack Ma appears to be imprisoned without charge while the government smugly denies it but doesn't offer proof, Zhao Wei is still at large (or is she?) but official orders require her old movies and TV shows to be scrubbed without giving any reason why (!) and even Fan Bingbing's charge of tax evasion was preceded by her simply disappearing for months without any indication of why besides a quickly deleted post that she'd been detained for unspecified reasons.
this is not how a confident society functions! this is not rule of law! if this is New China, the justice system has barely progressed from that of the Qing Dynasty!
