I reread parts of The Empire of Preys today (being stressed out about how to make progress because I need to make some structural changes due to a great decision I took but that also messes up with some stuff that's already in there), and YEAH yeah, I mean it's a first draft and has first draft bloating and awkwardness and convoluted writing, but I still think it's really gooddd, I just...
I am really happy with the Vibes. Halfway Home had "two cockroaches having an existential crisis while drowning in warm beer behind a stripclub" energy, with a low-buzz of constant stress and misery and painful, non-productive bursts of rage (and that's fine that's what this story wanted to be and I let it be exactly that), but The Empire of Preys is so... almost preppy at times? Like the energy is really sunny and summery and bright and proactive, and even the darker parts come from a place of involvement and electric mental gymnastics; everyone knows at least a good chunk of what's going on, and every character gets to have fun being smart and ambitious and a little ruthless/unhinged. Also, given we're on Sur'kesh quite often, the aesthetic borders on solarpunk at time: everything is green and full of water and bugs and flowers and it's a welcome change from Omega let me tell you --even Illium feels somewhat neater than the Citadel as a location (on the surface of course) because there is, like, a sky.
I don't know it's just such a fun project. I was so correct to make a prequel that feels so much more saturated and complex and politically savvy (annnd it also puts everything that happens next in an even bleaker light also, just by sheer contrast and because of how tragic it is that it had to end up that way). Also the thematic explorations are really neat, even if they are far from their final form yet: I am soooo happy about the exploration of the crossroad of ultraliberalism, post-imperialims and gender from kind of higher up in the social ladder than we ever get to see in Halfway Home. Why do I love writing about money this much??? I don't know, nobody unpacks that please and thank youuuu
The Empire of Preys just ... *feels* salarian, in a really exciting way. I'm so happy about this since it's exactly what I always wanted to capture about why this fictional alien culture enthralls me that much! So it feels great to just, soak in that world and spend time there.
Again I'm sorry it's a lot of me throwing myself a lot of flowers and that might feel weird (also there *are* flaws, I see them, I'll address them in time I hope --and also it will just be a demanding story that won't be for everyone because of this, it will ask for a lot of brainpower to get through just because it's about a fictional political and economical system that interconnects and everyone operates at a certain degree of mastery over it --except for Rhanda, BLESS Rhanda for being the ultimate himbo of the team and asking all the dumb questions and being the Voice of the People in the middle of all the rich and/or vaguely aristocratic pricks), BUT. Every time I return to this project after a break, I'm so happy to see that no, it is really good!!!! It might really be a banger!!!!

A couple important notes apropos of nothing in particular:
The VA for Fll'Yissetat sounded familiar, and sure enough, she is none other than Grey Delisle! One of the quintessential "holy shit it's her AGAIN" of the voice acting world; apparently she also voiced Nalia and Viconia earlier in this game along with some other NPCs. (We in the Bioware fandom sphere also know her as Nassana Dantius, Kahlee Sanders, Councilor Esheel, Dalatrass Linron, Velanna, and the female Bounty Hunter char from SWTOR, among others; she's also been in about three billion other things.)
When those random adventurers gave us the eyestalk, they also, for reasons I don't even pretend to understand, gave us this:

for the shepard asks: 8, 27, 40 and 47! 👀
EEEEEEEE THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! I'm at 2/10 playthroughs so I'll answer these for the two Shepards I've played through the trilogy with so far!! I'll get a better read on the other 8 as I go along ^^
8. What is their reaction to the Alchera mission? And after?
Shirley: Shirley took the entire mission as a bitter reminder of her failure as a commanding officer. Finding the remains of her fallen crew poured kerosene on her fire for revenge against the Collectors. After getting back on the Normandy, she went straight to her room and destroyed her medal of honor for her actions on Torfan, then ordered Joker to take her someplace she could kill something.
Cian: Alchera was definitely Cian's "loyalty" mission. From the moment Cerberus brought him back, Cian never quite felt... real? Present? Until he found closure for the SR-1 and his crew. The entire time he was on the ground on Alchera, sifting through the wreckage of his ship, finding the remains of his crew, he cried. At one point he just sank to his knees in the snow in front of the CIC and wept. Afterwards, back on the SR-2, he sought out Garrus and asked if he could just... exist with him for a while.
27. Do they have any pet peeves?
Shirley: blind optimists, people commenting on her appearance, people asking her about her time in Cerberus, squeaky shoes, pyjaks, the Council
Cian: overly negative people, xenophobes, black and white morality, Dalatrass Linron, literally anyone breathing a word against AIs
40. Does your Shepard actually like to collect model ships? If not, what do they display?
Shirley: She thinks that the display case and fish tank in her quarters are a gross and laughable waste of space. ...She only keeps fish for Liara.
Cian: Cian is a soft nerd and so he loves to buy every model ship he can find, carefully assemble them in his free time, and proudly display them. (He also loves all his fish and his space hamster, Pulsar)
47. Does Shepard practice any kind of self-care?
Shirley: Does charge+nova count as self-care?
Cian: Cian makes sure to keep himself clean and well rested. This gets hard during the Reaper war... he grows to dread sleeping, and the only thing that can coax him to get any rest at all is Kaidan holding him. Sometimes that doesn't mean sleep, and it just means cuddling with his eyes closed.

My god do I wish there was an option to tell Dalatrass Linron to go fuck herself.
Between her attempts to bribe Shepard into continuing a genocide and the massively condescending email she sends Shepard afterwards, she might genuinely be my least favourite character in the series.
Like, Councillor Valern is also a dick about curing the genophage, but he’s like “You saved my life once so I’m just gonna accept this and move on”.
While Linron tries to shame Shepard about Mordin’s death when she told them to kill him.

Destiny’s Fate (update) (main story)
Chapter: What I Need
word count: approximately 2700 words
Excerpt:
“Commander, the salarian dalatrass and the krogan leader both request permission to come aboard.”
Jane stood in front of the mirror in her bathroom as she placed the final pins in her hair to keep it out of her face. Popping her head first to the right and then to the left to ease the tension that just wouldn’t go away, she tapped her comm and replied, “Please inform Primarch Victus, Traynor, then have Vega and Cortez escort the dalatrass and Wrex to the conference room. I’ll be down in a moment.”
“Should that be an armed escort, commander?”
Jane fought against a smirk as best she could, but she caught the twitch of her lips in the reflection in front of her. Traynor had just the right amount of sass to get away with it in moments like this. Then again, she wasn’t wrong, either, and that was the more sobering thought. “On second thought, have Cortez escort the dalatrass up. Vega can wait with Wrex for the second run. I’ll grab one of the maintenance ducts to get down.”
“Understood, commander.”
Jane exited her room, finding the access point to her right just outside her door. As she descended the ladder, she pressed her comm again. “Kaidan?”
His response was immediate. “I’m here.”
“Cortez is escorting the dalatrass to the conference room and Victus should be there momentarily.”
“And Wrex?”
“Vega will bring him up after.” She reached the bottom of the ladder and hunched over, making her way through the access tube. “I’m on my way now. Could you meet them at the conference room?”
A soft chuckle filtered across the connection. Just a hint before he cleared his throat. “Just in case?”
Jane couldn’t fault him there. They both knew Wrex well. “Just in case.”
“Don’t worry, commander, I’m on my way.”

[SUR'KESH] Arrest Warrant Issued For Terrorist
via Pranas Courier
Talat Megapolis Police Service and the Salarian Union Interstellar Criminal Police Organization, in cooperation with the Special Tasks Group, have issued an arrest warrant for a citizen who attempted to detonate a bomb within Sur’Kesh’s capital city.
Jato Tegu Sumaru Mopelias Linron Tep is hereby wanted for an act of attempted terrorism against the Salarian Union. He is believed to be armed and dangerous, and has possibly changed his appearance and identity to elude the authorities. A reward of one million (1 000 000) credits has been issued for any information that aids in his apprehension. [This is Tep Linron’s last known appearance.]
Authorities strongly believe that Tep Linron was acting on behalf of the Salarian Democratic Union when attempting the aborted act of terror. Numerous communiques from the terrorist organization were intercepted, threatening Talat megapolis with an attack identical to the projected outcome of the foiled attempt.
Dalatrass Linron has also condemned severely the revelation of her cousin being a Salarian Democratic Union accomplice. “To be targeted with such hatred by someone of our own clutches shocks me to my core being. Doubly so to learn that the brand of hatred that the terrorists cultivate has managed to overcome our familial bonds. What cause of equality would have Tep’s bomb served, if it meant to kill me, my sisters, aunts and uncles alongside millions of others? The so-called democratic union...we saw a glimpse of their desired future at Entish years ago. It nearly happened again. SDU’s true cause is destroying the Salarian Union in conflagration of familicide.”
