proof by contradiction

Binary logic is an important tool of Western thought. It is able to accommodate a wide range of power relationships, in which one side of the binary is dominant and the other is subject to repression. For example:

colonizer : colonzied man : woman good : evil

And so on. Much of postcolonial and feminist theory is devoted revealing the complexity of these simple power relationships, specifically how the terms are depend on one another to produce meaning. For colonizers to exist, there must be the colonized. However, colonial rule is undermined by the presence of the colonized. Edward Said writes in Culture and Imperialism that "nations are narrations," meaning that nation-states emerge from shared history and collective identity, and rely on the power belief to perpetuate their existence. Therefore, alternative histories and counter-narrative can threaten state power. Colonization, which we will just call "a practice of domination," is maintained by erasing and repressing the stories that threaten it, which means erasing evidence of its own existence.

However, the absence of something is only a shadow of its existence. Many postcolonial scholars use the concept of ghosts and haunting to describe the discrepancy between the wealth and power of colonizers, and the dislocation and disappearance of the colonized. Angie Merill writes that

"Hauntings require us to acknowledge how cities and academies are built upon disappearance [...] The ghost exists here with us because of violence, and haunting is the result."

How is haunting felt when we visit the Stedelijk museum, where Felix de Rooy takes center stage? What are we meant to think or feel? As Mendy pointed out, merely presenting two halves of the binary sign is nothing worth celebrating. Indigenous existence and co-presence is actually the starting point for conversations about the relationship between colonizer/colonized. Co-presence disrupts the binary status quo with tension, irony, and the sense of haunting. For an example local to the Northwest, Michelle M. Jacob's Yakima Rising describes how in 1989, children from the Yakima nation were invited to dance in celebration of Washington's 100 years of statehood. The interaction between the state that sought to destroy the Yakima nation, and the children who embody its future--what does it signify to the the audience? Irony, but also: celebration, disruption, survival & vitality. Haunting, and tension between what is there, and what could have been; all the futures that did not eventuate.

But what about the futures yet in store? Interpreting and re-interpreting these interactions help us create new, complex meanings that do not rely on old colonial logic. Bringing together the living and the dead, the dislocated, and the disappeared is an example of what Merill calls "co-presence through desire": that hauntings are not only about the interplay between absence and presence, but also answering the desire of the ghost. To reveal what must be revived and transformed.

Nathaniel Shaw hates rich people. Raised in a poor family, by an on-and-off single mother thanks to his absentee father, he had to work for every single cent he’s ever had. He dealt with this with bitterness and resentment, choosing to take it out by punching whoever pissed him off, getting into fights and trouble more often than not as he was growing up. With his athletic talents, it was enough to get him a scholarship to Ogden, but not enough that he’d ever get the chip off his shoulder about being the poor kid around the unbelievably wealthy. He’s over-sensitive, withdrawn, and tactless, but if you get on his good side, he may just allow you to share his weed and show that underneath that, he does have a pisces stellium, and does in fact have feelings beyond just letting them get hurt so he can start hitting people.

Nate is the BRUISER WITH A SOFT CENTER because, at the end of the day, he is far more sensitive than he will ever let on. Everything hurts this Pisces moon, even as he glowers and glares, and yes, punches his way through them. He’s quick to react with anger - which often translates into violence - all while hiding how things are constantly hurting him. It’s easier to ignore it, because there’s nothing he can do. It’s just the hand he was dealt. And if he’s good at anything (which he still thinks may be debatable), it’s throwing a punch.

EXPANDED PERSONALITY:

Most of Nate’s personality is negative. Even what could be a positive trait (such as competitiveness, honesty, sensitivity, intensity….) he tends to turn it up to 1000 until it’s damaging. But honestly, most of it just negative to start with. He’s very withdrawn and broody, spends most of his time and interactions just glowering at people, and yet has an extremely short fuse, so will go from no reaction to swinging in the blink of an eye. he basically throws tantrums like a toddler, albeit a very large, 6′5″ toddler who actually knows how to fight.

However, he is extremely loyal if he decides someone is worth it - spoiler alert, most people aren’t - he will be there for them in the best way Nate knows how. Still tactless, but like, he tries his best. Basically his way of showing emotional support is being like so, uh, you wanna smoke a joint? Because at the end of the day, Nate is not very smart. Emotionally, or in a book smart sense. He can come off a bit of a himbo, just with his attempts to be charming and flirt with women (when he wants to). Plus he’s hot. And he knows it. And isn’t afraid to use it.

When it comes to women (ladies, please run), Nate likes to be pursued. He hates having to make the first move - probably due to of feeling like he isn’t worth it, more on that below - and he will flirt, charm, seduce, but when it actually comes down to it, he wants the other person to make that final leap. Some sort of validation or something. He likes when girls pay attention to him, and tries to coax it out of them. However, he also has a lot of resentment towards his mother for chasing after his father and bending over backwards to try to make things work, so he also loses interest as soon as a girl is too interested. And when he loses interest, he won’t say anything, he’ll just ghost or cheat. The only kind of confrontation Natey boi is good at is one that involves his fists.

His default way of connecting with people is...well, sex. Nate has no examples of a healthy emotional relationship, and he isn’t good at making friends, so typically, when a girl wants to get close to him, he fakes intimacy with his head between their legs, making them feel like they have him because he’s sleeping with them. Like he’s open and connected to them just because they boned. In reality, it’s just his way of avoiding the emotional intimacy he’s petrified of, because he knows it’ll come back to hurt him. The only downside to all that is the rare times he does want to emotionally connect with someone, he has no idea how to. All he knows how to offer is his body, really.

Nate’s very dry, prone to swearing (he did grow up in Australia), and his sense of humor is very deadpan. If you actually talk to him, you realize there’s a lot of sarcasm in his cynicism, put the issue is that he’s extremely withdrawn from most people, and honestly doesn’t even see the point in having conversations with them. He also uses this to hide a lot of his fundamental insecurities - he genuinely feels like he’s not going to amount to much, mostly because he’s been made to feel that way. He acts brash and confident, but he really does struggle with feeling like he’s worth anything. It’s part of why he gets so over-competitive, because he wants to prove he’s good at something.

When the Shaw family moved back to Sag Harbor from Australia, where Nate’s mother grew up, they instantly realized they were not on the same class playing feel as everyone else. They had never been wealthy. Four children and barely steady incomes from their parents - when they were even together - guaranteed that. The kids all realized pretty quickly they were going to have to get jobs, especially now that their father was completely out of the picture. Nate ended up working for a few families who ‘summered’ (god, he hated that word) nearby, working as a pool boy. One of those families…yeah, you guessed it, was the Morrison’s. Greer took interest in the pretty Australian pool boy who was her age, inviting him along to join some of the parties she and her friends had, despite him being her family’s staff. No way was that going to end badly.

Also, they may have hooked up a time or two their senior year of high school. But that’s irrelevant.

BIOGRAPHY

Nathaniel Shaw is the 3rd of four children to a very unhappy couple. Ella was twenty, and Luke, her very new Australian boyfriend - a deadbeat musician who wasted any money he got on drugs and alcohol - was twenty-seven, when they got pregnant the first time, and spent the next five years popping out four children. Ella was from Sag Harbor (aka the Hamptons), and she planned on raising her children there, but when Nate was three years old (Finnegan, the youngest, was two), Luke decided to go back to Australia, not giving many fucks if Ella and his children came with them. Ella, having felt like the last seven years of her life would be a waste if she let him walk away, despite their tumultuous, on and off again relationship, picked up the four kids, moved them to Melbourne with their father, and married him. Even married, they broke up a lot, Luke going off and disappearing for months at a time. Ella was inattentive, cold, and distant to her children, even though it never managed to extend to their asshole of a father. All of her emotional output was in that relationship, and her four Shaw siblings ended up holding themselves together to raise each other.

When Nate was fifteen, after twelve years in Australian, Ella decided she had enough, moved back to Sag Harbor, and immediately began the process to divorce Luke. The sibling’s were all shocked, a move around the world confusing enough when you’re a toddler, but nearly impossible for teenagers. Especially for lower class teenagers moving into a place like Sag Harbor, where people - the people who actually lived there - were comparable to them, but there were mansions worth millions of dollars, celebrities, and whole shit ton of wealth that came there to vacation. Nate took the move the hardest, and he started getting into a lot of fights while refusing to adjust. Nate and Liam had always had a rough relationship, and brawled as siblings do, though they tended to get more violent - egged on by their father, who could contribute little, but could contribute how to throw a punch.

After a few months, one of his fights ended up constituting as assault. It was bad enough, and the other kid had no chance to get any fighting back, so Nate ended up in juvie. He had no idea what he was going to do - he knew his mother couldn’t afford to pay for a lawyer, and he pretty much resigned himself to staying in there for however long he got sentenced for. Luckily, the charges were dropped, which would make you think would scare him straight - perhaps get him to stop fighting, but no such luck. Instead, all through high school, Nate had a bit of a reputation. He was a stellar athlete, particularly in swimming, but even more than that, he was spectacular at kicking someone’s ass.

That reputation quickly got him an invite into an illicit fighting ring, which, as you can imagine in the Hamptons, ended up having a lot of money thrown around as bets. Did he enjoy making these rich kids even more money? No, he didn’t. But, he was a surefire bet to win. And what that meant was that he got a cut of the money for himself too. And as desperate as Nate was for money, that was worth it. Plus, the fact that he had no healthy emotional outlet, well...fighting with people was a good way to let it all out. But it got him a reputation for being dangerous, and it got the Hamptons vacationites intrigued to say the least. So he started getting a lot of invites to hang out with them, to go to parties, to be part of the in crowd. When rich kids - like Greer Morrison - were in the Hamptons for the summer, or sneaking out there during various other vacations to party with no supervision, Nate (and often his siblings) would be invited along. And for the first couple years being in Sag Harbor, as a sophomore, a junior....he was fine with it. But as he got older, as he got more aware of the opportunities they would always be presented that he would never even get a chance to sniff at, he grew resentful, he grew bitter, and he grew to hate them.

All of that came to a head early in the fall of his senior year, when they were having a back to school party in a home that was still being built, music blasting and copious amounts of drugs and alcohol. Of course, young and feeling invincible, no one ever expected for them to be caught. But they were when they accidentally threw a still lit joint out, setting the house ablaze like it was kindling. Honestly, at that point of construction? It basically was. And every single kid there - except for Nate - had rich, influential parents who pulled strings to get them out of trouble. Except for Nate. And he took the fall for it, almost ending up in serious trouble, until he threatened to rat out one of the kids who was there with him. Who’s parent happened to work in law. Then, mysteriously, the trouble mostly went away. But it was still known that he had burned that building down, and invitations from the top schools that had been courting him disappeared, Nate suddenly faced with the sobering realization that he may have completely fucked up his future, because he didn’t have the connections that the rich brats visitng the Hamptons did.

It infuriated him. Enough so that even though he had been dating one of the rich kids - Parker, a senator’s daughter - for over a year, he had no qualms about ghosting all of them after the party, bitterness coating his every thought and opinion towards the rich kids he had previously tolerated. And while his partying may have gotten more under control - slightly, just due to the lack of access - his fighting got worse. There were multiple times where he was almost caught, almost in serious trouble, but everyone managed to cut him a break. They felt for the Shaw kids, especially Nate, with his talent and yet no parent to support him, and the fact that he had almost ruined everything with a stupid party. So his teachers and even a cop or two, cut the kid a break, knowing - hoping - that so long as he got through this last year of high school with his nose relatively clean, he’d be able to get out of town with a scholarship.

And he did end up getting a scholarship. He got a full ride to Ogden for his athletic talents, and even though it wasn’t the type of place he wanted to be, knowing the crowd of students would be much like the ones he grew up seeing descend on the Hamptons every summer, he went anyways. Did the scholarship come through thanks to some strings pulled, hoping his mouth would stay shut about the arson he didn’t commit? Maybe. But he had no other choice - it’s not like he could pay for college on his own.

William December “Billy Dee” Williams Jr. (born April 6, 1937) is an actor and voice actor.

He was born in New York City, and raised in Harlem along with his twin sister, Loretta He made his Broadway theatre debut at age seven in The Firebrand of Florence. He graduated from The High School of Music & Art, then won a painting scholarship to the National Academy of Fine Arts and Design, where he won a Hallgarten Prize for painting.

His film debut was in The Last Angry Man, but he came to national attention in the television movie, Brian’s Song which earned him an Emmy nomination for Best Actor. He has appeared in at least 70 films over six decades including critically acclaimed and popular movies such as Lady Sings the Blues, Mahogany, and Nighthawks. He was cast in his most enduring role as Lando Calrissian, becoming the first African-American actor with a major role in the Star Wars franchise, in The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. He delivered Lando as a voice actor in video games, animated series, and the National Public Radio adaptation of The Empire Strikes Back. He was inducted into the Black Filmmaker’s Hall of Fame and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Another enduring franchise relationship started with Batman, playing attorney Harvey Dent, a role that was developed into a villainous alter-ego, Two-Face, which he voiced for The Lego Batman Movie.

His TV work has over sixty credits including recurring roles over the decades in Gideon’s Crossing; Dynasty, General Hospital: Night Shift; and General Hospital. A holistic look at Earth's chemical cycling sheds light on how the planet stays habitable

We all know Earth is special, but we may not fully appreciate how good we have it on this planet. Unlike its planetary neighbors, Earth has remained habitable for billions of years thanks to a complicated, ever-changing dance of elements.

A study by researchers at the University of Chicago, Rice University, and the California Institute of Technology sheds new light on the delicate balance of biogeochemical cycles that keep Earth temperate, hydrated and thriving.

The cycling of elements between the oceans, atmosphere, and land plays a role in keeping the climate stable, but it is so complex that scientists typically isolate pieces of the whole to try to get a better grasp on how they work. However, a new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on March 13, offers a different approach.

The researchers instead offer a broad, simplified point of view, using a new set of mathematical tools to illuminate relationships among the different chemical cycles that were previously hard to spot.

"Our approach provides a new way to identify the fundamental building blocks of stability in the chemical components of Earth's climate—the underlying ways in which the climate can be stabilized over geological time due to the movement of elements across the ocean, atmosphere, and rock reservoirs," said Preston Cosslett Kemeny, a UChicago TC Chamberlain postdoctoral fellow and first author on the paper.

"This is an elegant, simplified way to think about an enormous problem, which organizes a lot of previous research on elemental cycles into packages of chemical reactions that can be balanced and understood," said UChicago Asst. Prof. Clara Blättler, senior author on the paper.

Cycles and climate

We often take for granted that the planet Earth has supported complex life for hundreds of millions of years. But this stability was certainly not guaranteed—one need only look next door at Mars and Venus, which formed from roughly the same materials as Earth, but do not even currently support liquid water. What's Earth's secret?

A key aspect is chemical cycling. Elements like carbon, sulfur, and calcium move between the land, ocean and atmosphere in ways that have kept the conditions at Earth's surface relatively stable over hundreds of millions of years.

For example, scientists think the planet's temperatures are partly maintained by carbon shifting gradually back and forth between the ocean, atmosphere, and land. When carbon dioxide builds up in the atmosphere and heats the surface, it causes rocks to break down faster—moving carbon into the ocean and subsequently into rocks at the seafloor. Over millions of years, the planet gradually cools back down as the carbon is sucked out of the atmosphere.

Untangling these cycles has been the work of decades. It's challenging because the cycles last for millions of years, are endlessly changing, take place over the entire globe and interact with each other constantly. It's so complex that scientists often only examine pieces of the entire picture—typically considering a limited number of element cycles or a small subset of their interactions. But when pieces of the puzzle are missing, researchers have to make assumptions to fill in the gaps.

Kemeny wondered if working this way might tend to cloud the overall picture of how biogeochemical interactions give rise to planetary stability.

He, along with Blättler, Mark Torres of Rice University, and Woodward Fischer of Caltech, took a step back. They ran a mathematical analysis in which they considered a wide range of chemical reactions comprising major chemical cycles, but did not specify how or how much the cycles interacted with each other.

The result is a framework that identifies all of the major and minor combinations of reactions that balance Earth's carbon cycle and their relations to one another—something that had been missing from the field. Viewed this way, the Earth's climate can be represented by a set of interconnected chemical equations that must balance over certain time periods.

The authors said their work is useful as scientists continue to study the history of Earth and how the climate has changed over time.

"For example, say that you are considering a hypothesis for why the climate changed in the past—such as the major cooling of the last 65 million years," Kemeny said. "You can take this framework and use it to say, well if X process increased or decreased, then it should have also caused Y to happen, or would have needed to be balanced by Z, and that you have to account for those outcomes—so with that prediction we can look for evidence for the joint operation of the whole geochemical system."

Other relationships between chemical cycles can become visible when looked at in the bird's-eye view. "For example, this analysis identified a new way to balance carbon fluxes in the ocean-atmosphere system while accumulating atmosphere oxygen," Kemeny said.

Taken as a whole, "We hope it's a beautiful way to help understand all the chemistries that are involved in making Earth a safe place for life to evolve," Blättler said.

Cuba's National Ballet marks its 75th anniversary. With performances concluding in a tribute to its late founder, Alicia Alonso, who used her global star power to instil an art form with aristocratic roots in the Communist-run Caribbean island, the National Ballet of Cuba is commemorating its 75th anniversary. On October 28, the anniversary of "Giselle," the Romantic ballet for which Alonso is most recognized and which she danced into her 70s, the National Theater of Cuba will host a special gala. Up until her death in 2019 at the age of 98, vision-impaired Alonso directed dancers with the assistance of dependable artists in old, aged venues where company members practised in the oppressive heat of the Caribbean without air conditioning. "Ballet was never (for the) elite in Cuba," ballet enthusiast Leonardo Vinageras, who lives in Havana, remarked at a recent anniversary celebration. With a distinct bravura style and technique that rivalled that of the French, who invented ballet in King Louis XIV's court, and the Russians, whose elite Bolshoi and Mariinsky dance companies were founded in the 1700s, Alonso founded the largest ballet school in the world. Under the current direction of prima ballerina Viengsay Valdés, the National Ballet of Cuba and its affiliated academy have produced a disproportionate number of dance luminaries, such as José Manuel Carreño and Carlos Acosta, for a small island nation with 11 million people. In 1948, not long after rising to fame in the New York company that would eventually become the American Ballet Theatre, Alonso established her namesake National Ballet Academy in Cuba. Motivated by Fidel Castro, Alonso associated herself with his revolution of 1959 and made a move permanently to Cuba, where they teamed up with the government to promote the National Ballet of Cuba, now known as allies in the popularization of ballet. Speaking of women (ladies, please run), Nate likes to be pursued. He hates having to make the first move - probably due to of feeling like he isn’t worth it, more on that below - and he will flirt, charm, seduce, but when it actually comes down to it, he wants the other person to make that final leap. Some sort of validation or something. He likes when girls pay attention to him, and tries to coax it out of them. However, he also has a lot of resentment towards his mother for chasing after his father and bending over backwards to try to make things work, so he also loses interest as soon as a girl is too interested. And when he loses interest, he won’t say anything, he’ll just ghost or cheat. The only kind of confrontation Natey boi is good at is one that involves his fists.

His default way of connecting with people is…well, sex. Nate has no examples of a healthy emotional relationship, and he isn’t good at making friends, so typically, when a girl wants to get close to him, he fakes intimacy with his head between their legs, making them feel like they have him because he’s sleeping with them. Like he’s open and connected to them just because they boned. In reality, it’s just his way of avoiding the emotional intimacy he’s petrified of, because he knows it’ll come back to hurt him. The only downside to all that is the rare times he does want to emotionally connect with someone, he has no idea how to. All he knows how to offer is his body, really.

FULL BIOGRAPHY

nate is the third out of four kids in five years to two highly incompatible people

his mom followed his dad back to australia when he was 3, only to call it all off 12 years later, and move back to sag harbor when nate was 15

nate took the move v hard in general, got into a lot of fights, briefly ended up in juvie after being charged with assault

couldn't pay for a lawyer, but the kid he was defending became his best friend (xoxo keys) and his father was a public defender and got the charges dropped, so he doesn't TECHNICALLY have it on his record

shortly after he got invited to an illicit fighting ring, which had money being given to winners and tossed around in bets by the rich kids who vacationed in the summer

that's how nate ended up hanging out with them and partying with them despite being poorTM

early in the fall his senior year, there was a back to school party where the house they were in ended up burning down - since nate was the only one who didn't have rich parents, who do you think took the fall? (hint: nate)

stanford stopped recruiting him & he broke up with his girlfriend at the time (actually, he just ghosted her, but that counts)

did he end up getting a scholarship at ogden in return for keeping his mouth shut? maybe (yes)

when he came to ogden as a freshman in college, he came in as an engineering major (why? no idea - think someone told him too and he was like, well, i have no hopes or dreams of my own, so y not), failed a bunch of classes, and then ended up switching to an undecided major for his junior year…so is he going to graduate on time? absolutely not. he is very much behind in his schooling.

he worked as a pool boy and mowed lawns and shit during the summer once he moved back to the Hamptons as a teen to make some extra cash, so rubbed shoulders with a lot of rich kids, which just made him more bitter about all of it

he did in fact sleep with several milf housewives while he was doing above jobs

deep down he is an artsy soft boi, and he just refuses to acknowledge that he loves music because of his father, and the fear that exploring that side of himself will just turn him into his dad. it's definitely something he needs to come to terms to still

jesse threw nate under the bus, nate threw jesse under the bus, they kissed fought, the cops were looking at nate real sussy

so yeah from the very first sit down with the cops, nate was not making a good impression

he did get dragged outta the pool during a swim practice to be questioned

after their second interview, he is in their list of suspects :)

overall, nate is trying very hard to not be involved with greer or her disappearance at ALL because he does not want to be held responsible

he did overhear (with pippa) penny saying that she knew why greer left

oh also, he hooked monty and ollie up with a half built house to use as a drug base, thanks to his connects in the construction industry near ogden

he has those connects bc the summer between his freshman and sophomore years, he worked for nat's dad while they were dating. and nat's dad hates him. so nate said fuck u i'ma have my friends deal drugs outta ur house
