AI exists and there's nothing any of us can do to change that.
If you have concerns about how AI is being/will be used the solution is not to abstain - it's to get involved.
Learn about it, practice utilising AI tools, understand it. Ignorance will not protect you, and putting your fingers in your ears going 'lalalala AI doesn't exist I don't acknowledge it' won't stop it from affecting your life.
The more the general population fears and misunderstands this technology, the less equipped they will be to resist its influence.

Live is being rolled out to more places now so please do the following:
Click the spanner
Click more
Click terms and conditions
Scroll to the bottom of that
Click the link about submitting a request
Fill it out with your name, country and email
Request deletion, object to processing of your info
Send the generated email
Under GDPR in the EU and UK it's illegal to hold onto your data for longer than is strictly necessary for the service and you may request deletion at any time or they can get in serious trouble. As an overly simple summary.
Similar laws seem to apply in California and Nevada.
Peace! ✌️
To snooze it you go under your settings, account settings, then turn off everything such as based on your likes, best post first, and snooze Tumblr live.
@staff This is shit and I hate it. ❤️

The (Near) Future of Internet Privacy
Tumblr media
Some news on the internet security/personal privacy front that you may find useful:
FTC Announces Plans to Begin Important Privacy Rulemaking (Source: Commondreams.org, 11Aug, 2022)
On Thursday, the Federal Trade Commission opened its long-anticipated rulemaking on measures to stop corporations and other commercial actors from abusing people’s personal data. In June, the agency announced that it was considering this rulemaking to safeguard privacy and create protections against algorithmic decision-making that results in unlawful discrimination. Today it released an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (“ANPR”) on the topic. This is the first step in building a formal agency record for potential regulations that would be based on public comments about “commercial surveillance and data security practices that harm consumers.”
INVISV Launches PGPP (Pretty Good Phone Privacy) to Provide a New Level of Privacy for Mobile Communications (Source: Associated Press, 8 Aug 2022)
In a nutshell, when you use Relay to visit a website or use an app, your phone will send an encrypted signal to INVISV, which will then pass that request along to a second relay point which is operated by the Fastly, a content delivery network. This has the effect of separating your IP address from your data traffic, with neither INVISV nor Fastly having all the information required to know which data was sent to which phone.
[[NOTE: I’m not advocating for this new carrier, I’m just making a note that it exists and will be watching to see how it preforms as it is released]]
Watchdogs Say FTC Must Foster Internet 'Free from Unwanted Surveillance' (Source: Commondreams.org, 12Aug, 2022)
"The need for protections against companies' over-collection and retention of sensitive data has also come into stark relief as state prosecutors subpoena tech companies for private information about people seeking reproductive healthcare information and services.”
The importance of protecting privacy in a post-Roe world (Source: techxplore.com, 12 Aug, 2022)
"Big Tech has shown again and again that they will choose monetizing user data over protecting individual privacy, and the federal government has been reluctant to offer serious regulation," she says. "So if people want to keep their information private, especially when it comes to reproductive care, the time to learn the basics of online privacy is now. Some of my favorite resources are the Our Data Bodies project, the Tech Learning Collective, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation."
[[NOTE: Worth looking at the links in that last paragraph, particularly Our Data Bodies project]]

CALL TO ALL US CITIZENS! Have your say concerning AI usage. There's not much hope as the advisory board that is concerned with AI in the US consists mostly of millionaires who love exploitation, but this gives you the chance to speak up and voice your concern! I copied the post from the link above:
"With ChatGPT’s rapid growth since its launch in late 2022 and many other text, graphic and video AI generative services gaining popularity, AI and copyright has become a heatedly debated topic. The U.S. Copyright Office is now seeking public comment to assess the need for legislative or regulatory steps in copyright law issues raised by the rapid development of AI.
Four main areas surrounding the use of AI systems are currently for public comment, some of these are more closely connected to fannish activities and have a direct impact on AO3 users.
Using copyrighted materials in training AI models, specifically, whether permission from copyright owner is needed, in what form (opt in or opt out), and if compensations is necessary; what type of system for permission and remuneration is feasible, whether records should be retained to identify training materials used, and if they should be available to copyright holders; if requests are not honored, what remedies should be available.
Whether materials generated using AI systems are copyrightable – namely what level of human involvement may be considered sufficient control over the output material for it to be considered human-authored.
Potential liability for infringing works generated with the use of AI systems: how the liability should be apportioned between the developers of the system and the user who provided the prompts.
How to deal with attributes not traditionally protected under copyright law, such as human likeness and artistic styles.
The comment period remains open until October 18, 2023, for written comments and November 15, 2023 for reply comments. Detailed instructions note that short written comments are limited to 5000 characters, longer comments can be uploaded in various formats. Please note that all information and files provided in the submission process will be publicly available.
Visit the comment form to have your say!
Given that the feedback being sought concerns an organization the OTW is not affiliated with, comments have been disabled on this post. Decisions made by the U.S. Copyright Office could impact the OTW and AO3’s approach to AI generated works in the future. We thank concerned fans who wish to articulate their opinions on the matter directly with them."

hey uh anyone else with samsung have bixby, suddenly, and without your knowledge or permission, turned on and all the permissions given and it wont let you deny the permissions, it wont let you disable or force stop the app, it wont let you remove the app, or in any way deny it access to your phone or data?
Tumblr media
and i only found out bc when i went to turn the phone off, it wouldnt turn off bc inexplicably, at some point, it changed settings so that pressing and holding the Power Button would Wake Up Bixby instead of, you know, showing me options for powering off the device?
Image IDs in alt text and under the cut
[First image ID: a picture of a samsung galaxy A71 phone with settings open. The settings are for what happens when you press the "side key" or power button. there are 2 options, pressing and holding the power button will either "wake bixby" or it will bring up the "power off menu". the option for wake bixby is selected. end of image ID]
[Second image ID: the same phone as is in the first image, but now with screen showing the "camera permissions" settings for the Bixby Voice app. The options are "allow only while using the app" "ask every time" and "deny". The setting "allow only while using the app" is selected, and all the options are greyed out in a way that indicates it is not an option to change this setting to deny this permission. Underneath the greyed out options is small text reading "Device requires this permission to operate." end of image ID]
[Third image ID: the same phone as is in the first 2 images, but now the settings are opened to location access permissions for the Bixby voice app. It has the same options as the 2nd image, and "allow only while using this app" is selected in this one as well, and the options are again, all greyed out to show that it is not possible to change or remove this permission for this app. This one also has text reading "Device requires this permission to operate" end of image ID]

To add to the absolute disappointment towards companies that harvest your data for ad companies, my machine consistently gives me ads (for music services where I can ONLY HEAR the ad) in Spanish.
I do not speak Spanish
I mean I can cut some slack and say I have traveled to Spanish speaking countries about twice but still???
Like if you are going to try and track my every move through an online device shouldn't you be able to tell what languages I speak?
If they should be sending me Korean or Japanese ads since that is the majority of the music I listen to?? That might be reasonable.
Honestly if the Internet got better at using the information it gathers to give me ads of products I'd actually like, I'd probably buy it. Like "wow I didn't know about this product but, I can see myself really enjoying it. Let's get it" could be happening but, no it's "Spanish?! Again?!"

for anyone too young to know this: watching The Truman Show is a vastly different experience now, compared to how it was before youtube and social media influencers became normal
before it was like, "what a horrifying thing to do to a human being! to take away their autonomy and privacy, all for the sake of profits! to create fake scenarios for them to react to, just to retain viewership! to ruin their happiness just so some corporate entity could harvest money from their very humanity! how could anyone do something so evil?"
and now it's like, "ah, yeah. this is still deeply fucked up, but it's pretty much what every influencer has been doing to their kids for a decade now. probably bad that we've normalized this experience"
