Tumblr media
Next are these random plans for an animatic ive had in mind for LITERALLY a year now but am just too lazy to carry out. Two concepts in and im done Bye!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do not like how i drew mayor prentiss here he looks too young! Well i think i need to redesign my design for him regardless. But its messy anyway so i dont mind much. Todd looks PEEVED😒
I dont believe I’ve posted this one anywhere? Its pretty old but worth throwing in
Tumblr media
Ermm this next thing is probably cringe / too self indulgent but its tumblr who gives a fuck
I made an oc..😔 reg oliver (stole a name todd listed at the beginning of tkonlg i think im clever for it) and made him into a goofy character, never drew any more than these bc his design didnt look how i wanted thoufh its still a silly concept i think. The Parallax View (Alan J. Pakula, 1974)
Cast: Warren Beatty, Hume Cronyn, Paula Prentiss, William Daniels, Kelly Thordsen, Earl Hindman, William Joyce, Jim Davis, Kenneth Mars. Screenplay: David Giler, Lorenzo Semple Jr., based on a novel by Loren Singer. Cinematography: Gordon Willis. Production design: George Jenkins. Film editing: John W. Wheeler. Music: Michael Small.
This somewhat elliptical political paranoia thriller was a critical and commercial dud in its day, but time has been kinder to it than it has to more conventional films in its subgenre, such as Three Days of the Condor (Sydney Pollack, 1975), which looks rather slick and self-satisfied by comparison. The story, about a reporter's investigation of a shadowy company that seems to provide fall guys for political assassination, is framed by shots of a panel of judicial figures delivering their conclusion that the most recent assassination was the work of a "lone gunman." We think "Warren Commission" without hesitation. Although the main story is somewhat fragmented and the film occasionally seems rushed, there are some terrific action sequences and an overall feeling that the director and screenwriters are on to something real. The "downer" ending leaves us with that sinister panel floating in darkness, and although conspiracy theories are thicker than fleas these days, who doesn't think there might be one or two of them that have merit?

I finished reading and the ocean was our sky by patrick ness!!!!
It was sososososososo beautiful and gave me goosebumps and almost made me cry at the end.
Patrick Ness is my favourite author, between the chaos walking trilogy, a monster calls, and more than this. His books consistently have me emotionally impacted in ways other authors can only dream of (oh god, Davy Prentiss Jr… 😢 ). I also find they’re quite creative and a little experimental. So when I was in the bookshop and saw he made a book about the ocean I HAD to read it!!
This was very experimental. It was an experiment that I liked.
It feels like it needs a few rereads and analyses to really get the maximum appreciation.
Also, Rovina Cai’s illustrations are beautiful!

Ahhhhhhh lovely sea drawings!!!!

I WATCHED CHAOS WALKING
Meaning I've watched all of Nick's films that are available to watch
Tumblr media
I am a slut for sci-fi movies that don't seem like sci-fi. I very much enjoyed it. It had Tom Holland, Daisy Ridley, Mads Mikkelsen (my beloved), Cynthia Erivo (wifey) AND fucking Demian Bichir which I was so not prepared for.
The first half was very much a "why do men" situation.
Tumblr media
Nick played Mads' son Davy Prentiss Jr. The movie gave us cowboy Nick which is iconic being that Nick was born in Dallas.
He had an accent and everything.
He was a fucking dick but he played the part well. His role was minor but we got to see him get his shit rocked twice.
I think he did decent in it. His accent killed me but at least it was better than his Brooklyn accent in Midway.
But I mean he doesn't have to go far for the southern accent because I'm pretty sure Papa Jonas is from Nashville.

I KEEP CRYING THINKING ABOUT THAT SCENE IN MoM WHEN VIOLA REALIZES SHE WAS WRONG AND REGRETS HER PREVIOUS FIGHT WITH TODD WHERE SHE TOLD HIM SHE DIDN’T RECOGNIZE HIM ANYMORE BECAUSE THEY’RE WHOLE THING IS “DON’T DECEIVE ME. OH, NEVER LEAVE ME.” AND THAT’S ALL THEY FUCKING DID FOR MOST OF THAT BOOK. IT WAS CONSTANT LIES, DISTRUST, AND LOSING FAITH IN ONE ANOTHER LIKE BITCH STOPPPP

Chaos Walking Film Opinion Time!
Hiiiii.
I know I haven't been incredibly active on this account, what with college and the world falling apart, but I just wanted to check back in because I saw the movie! (No spoilers)
Alrighty so overall, I walked out of the theater happy about the humour of the movie and the dynamic between Todd and Viola, but I have to be honest and admit that I wasn't really satisfied with it as a representative of the books. Don't get me wrong - it was entertaining to watch, and definitely made me laugh and smile and all that good stuff. My issue just lies in the fact that it's not a good adaptation.
(Pls share your thoughts! I'd love to talk about the movie with anyone!)
Here's a few of my thoughts (possible spoilers for the film and later books):
- I overall felt as if the plot of the film was a fairly shallow representation of the depth that the book goes into. And I know! It's a movie, you're really limited time-wise, but I'll explain what I think didn't make sense.
- I didn't like that they set up the movie with a fatherly dynamic between Todd and the Mayor. I get that it is a quick device to show the whole brainwashed mindset he has regarding Prentisstown's history, but I feel like it's a blow to his character in a way. I think the relative innocence he has in the book really makes the reader empathize with him from the beginning, which I don't think reflected as well in the movie until Viola started putting the pieces together. Overall, it was just a weird choice, because Todd in no way sees Mayor Prentiss as a father figure in the books until MoM - and he's quite literally brainwashed into it.
- I overall liked Todd and Viola's friendship in the movie, I really enjoyed their scenes together, but the one thing that did irk me was the whole "oooh is viola gonna kiss me!?" thing they had going on in Todd's noise. Again, I know it's a movie and there was limited time, but I am just so fond of the way that book-Todd has literally zero romantic interest toward her for the entirety of book one. He cares for her so deeply without even thinking of her in that way, which I think was what made them such a great duo throughout the series, so overall if the filmmakers were looking to make this into a franchise I don't think that was the greatest call. A slow build - kinda like the Ron/Hermione relationship in the HP films - would've felt a lot more natural and less thrown-together.
- (Movie spoiler) The rushing of the plot to have the ending be the settler ship arriving was just so??? Unnecessary? I didn't understand that at all. Like again, if the studio's goal was to make a franchise, why implement book 3's arguably BIGGEST plot motivator in the movie? Almost the entirety of MoM is a race against the clock to get to the settler ship first, so that just completely tosses out that whole fantastic plotline for future use. I just don't get it? It felt like such a cop-out, like oh here! a big ship that will (spoiler again) conveniently arrive in time to give Todd life saving medical treatment! I'll say it again: inneffective in getting me to want to watch a sequel. Want me hanging on the edge of my seat and willing to pay for another movie ticket? End it the way Ness did, with one of the main characters injured, and their whole goal, the only shot at hope - Haven - destroyed because Mayor Prentiss already got there. It's just astounding, because there was SO much fantastic writing right there at their disposal! And I feel like rushing it was so unnecessary.
- (MAJOR MOVIE SPOILER WARNING) They KILLED OFF Mayor Prentiss???? Or at least it looks like they did. Did the movie makers not understand that he is literally the driving force of the entire book series and if not for him all the issues would most likely be resolvable in book 1? Once again, franchise-wise, this was a terrible call. Who could possibly replace him as the big-bad in future films?
- (spoilers) Now, because Mayor Prentiss was (seemingly) killed at the end, and because there was virtually no emphasis on the fact that Prentisstown needs Todd to kill in order to "complete their army" or whatever (the book plotline), Aaron's character is literally completely pointless in the context of the movie. He serves to scare Viola and kill Manchee, and that's it. He screams a couple lines about wanting her as a sacrifice, he terrorizes them, and she torches him at the end. Let me emphasize again, that the entire reason Viola killing Aaron was so pivotal in the books is because Todd didn't do it. So when the film fails to deliver the "Killing Makes You A Prentisstown Man" plotline, then they also fail to make Aaron's character mean anything. There is no symbolism that comes with his death. Experiment: say the movie replaced him in every scene with a random Prentisstown man that the Mayor sends to find Todd and Viola. Is the film changed at all? Nope. I rest my case.
- Brief point here. That being said ^^^ the film also fails to make Todd's attacking the Spackle be anything other than a wild action scene.
That's all I really have to say for now. I know I'm kind of being hypercritical, but I just feel like it would've been so easy to make the movie good if they had just stuck with the original plot. Lmk if you guys agree/disagree, or whatever your thoughts were after seeing it!

The fact that throughout The Knife of Never Letting Go we don't know Mr Prentiss Jr's name until the very end and in the next book we spend quite sometime learning about Davy is such a great little detail
