putting my hands on your shoulders looking directly into your eyes why are you so insistent that Dazai is faking every emotion every second of every day except when he's acting mean or evil why do you think his dark side is more true than his happier or sillier sides
do you not also have multiple facets you show different people? are we not all beautiful multifaceted individuals? are your actions and reactions not influenced by your emotions and state of mind?
can't he laugh at his own jokes? can't he fondly think of the Agency? can't he be dramatic because he wants to? can't he be surprised by something suddenly happening, even if he knew it would happen? do you not jump when the jack in the box gets out even if you were the one working the mechanism?
why would the mean persona be more real? why would any and all joy be faked? why are you only allowing him misery?
#sorry i saw one too many posts talking about dazai's ''masks'' and how he hides his true self from the ada#and what of it if he still has the potential to hurt others? what of it if he's good at hurting? every day he chooses not to lean into it#not too far at the very least.#isn't kyouk.a skilled at killing? did she not choose not to do it?#i'm not saying dazai's never acting (because it does happen) i'm saying too many people are too quick to brush off-#every non-serious non-mean emotion as ''playing an act''#why would the mean persona not be a fake?? you thought about that??? what biases are you holding here#he makes jokes. he acts silly. he's a drama queen. he loves it.#you know what IS tiring? having to look evil and untouchable and impassive in front of a whole organization every day as a teenager#as soon as he gets to lupin with od.a and ang.o he goes silly mode. heck- when he *met* ang.o it was because he went silly mode.#as soon as chuuy.a is in proximity he starts yelling children's insults and starts stupid competitions#his silly mode is just as integrated into his personality as the capacity to be the scariest most evil person you've seen#they are not mutually exclusive and having the capacity for either does not mean acting on them#as asagiri said in an interview: bsd isn't about change it's about adaptation. kyouk.a has the talent to kill. she just chooses not to.#dazai has the skills to be evil. he just chooses good.#that got long in the tags sorry#apparently i talk sometimes

Just thought it would be interesting to think about what pokemon starters the Ikemen vampire characters might pick! And maybe what kind of trainers they would be...well of course once Mc explained what a pokemon is...I hope this isn't boring
So here's the headcanon :
(These are just my opinions! Feel free to tell me what you think! There isn't like a wrong or right answer)
Arthur :
• Arthur finds all the starters of each generation interesting
• would probably pick a pokemon with an outgoing personality something like maybe Oshawott, Charmander, or Popplio
• Remembering when Arthur told us about when he was getting Vic...who's to say he won't make that same cute mistake twice (even with his godly observation skills, he's still capable of mistakes sometimes, rarely, besides it's cute) With a pokemon this time
• So Arthur chooses Popplio
• "don't you look like a fine gent, let's get along nicely"
• Eventually Popplio evolves into Brionne and then Primarina then he realizes his Primarina is a girl
• still sticks to his guns like he does with Vic
• He loves how pretty and majestic Primarina looks, and plenty of "Skirts" in town like his pretty Primarina too
• He would probably be decent at batting but with a beauty like Primarina maybe he would try Contests or Musicals instead, also lots of contest or musical trainers are women ;)
• Imagine Arthur dressing up Primarina as a detective!
• He would probably also be the kind of trainer to always stock up on full restores, revives, and full heals.
• He might be a pokemon breeder on the side it kinda suits him sort of, maybe eventually dabble a bit in pokemon doctoring
• He might meet Brock from the first season of Pokemon and become good friends
• Would probably be smart with like battle items too like X Attacks and X defenses and such
• perfect strategist and would set up terrains and use smart moves, would also have perfect offence and defense
• He and Primarina would probably be a delight to have a journey with
...
Theo :
• Would immediately look for a strong and or tough looking one
• No dog starter, that's too bad
• Stays the hell away from Litten
• Can sense great things from Charmander
• trains very hard everyday
• Charmander evolves into Charmeleon then Charizard and does not disappoint
• No one would want to mess with Theo and Charizard
• Focuses more on attack
• probably has like a potion somewhere right? Kinda forgets about that
• I can see him having a few similar personality traits from Paul from the pokemon diamond and pearl anime
• Once he becomes pokemon champion of the region he's in, he'd probably spend loads of time at the art galleries in different regions, it would be a whole new world for him
• Charizard would have a sweet tooth like Theo (They need some cute underneath that tough exterior)
• Charizard gets along well with Vincent's pokemon
• Would be a great Ally to have if your traveling and prone to regional evil team encounters
...
Vincent :
• Is a great friend to the shy pokemon of the bunch
• All the pokemon are at least a little drawn to his kind and caring nature, he's the snow white of the mansion residents
• I can see him eventually deciding on Chikorita
• He would probably paint pictures of it and have them put in pokemon art galleries, like the big one in Lumios city in the Kalos region
• It will look even prettier as it evolves
• C'mon Vincent and Meganium was meant to be
• He would probably be more into Contests but make no mistake, he will mop the floor with your pokemon if you dare battle him
• Would probably be great at defense and takes out pokemon in 1 hit
• He would probably immediately be good at making pokemon food, he doesn't want them to starve afterall
• His pokemon are close with Theo's pokemon
• He would probably be good about always having supplies on hand for pokemon
• Meganium would probably always have the same expressions as Vincent most of the time! Adorable!
• He Would be a delight to travel with
...
Will :
• Which one looks mischievous enough to keep up with him?
• Chimchar looks promising, great energy, and fire typing looks fun, what was fire symbolic of?
Well lots of things... but in this instance Hell.
• might even join an evil team just to write incredible plays for pokemon musicals, in secret of course, then possibly be a double agent for the good guys, really it depends on his mood.
• did I mention he adores pokemon musicals? New passion right here
• Although would probably beat the league to earn that respect, with you guessed it, un-evolved Chimchar like a madlad
• Chimchar would evolve into Monferno then Infernape later and be like a copy of Will
• He would probably lean more towards special attack and special defense
• Would probably at some point come across Jessie and James...just found his first play victims >:)
• Would be very entertaining to travel with, but he might dissapear if he find a scheme to cook up
...
Comte :
• Enjoys the beauty of all of them
• Has a hard time deciding on a typing
• Eventually he gets a sort of connection with Fennekin
• Both the beauty of the starter and his own handsomeness would complement eachother nicely
• He would probably get an Elite four position like very easily
• battling would totally be his thing, although his pokemon don't get dirty during battles
• focuses on speed
• is a very prepared trainer with items
• probably gets a big fanbase as large or larger than Raihan of the galar gyms
• He would have a very refined Braixen then Delphox
• Kalos is like home to this man, it is the france of the pokemon world afterall
• Might join a contest if the mood ever strikes him
• He and his team are the definition of elegance
• Would be incredible to travel with, although expect him to be swamped by fans everywhere
...
Leonardo :
• Litten reminds him of Lumiere
• Litten likes naps
• Leo just found a pokemon partner in a couple seconds
• Leo would probably be on a pokemon journey practically forever just living his life and just going with the flow
• He would EVENTUALLY get champion status...EVENTUALLY
• Would probably be a pokemon culinary genius (c'mon it's mostly berries anyways, and this man is talent galore)
• Litten would be the cat version of Leonardo
• It will eventually evolve...with time...EVENTUALLY...to Torracat then Incineraor
• Even as Incineroar it's like looking at Cat Leonardo
• His Incineroar would probably be the strongest Incineroar of all time and not give a damn about it
• His pokemon are very peaceful
• Leonardo might paint something for a pokemon gallery if Theo bugs him enough
• After having his Champion status he'll probably just move on to the next region
• a delight to travel with if you don't mind waking him up from naps occasionally
...
Isaac :
• So much to discover
• Where to Start? Probably with a starter pokemon
• He has a hard time opening up to a connection, but Cyndaquil reminds him of his own pet at home, and it's quiet enough to focus on research
• Eventually he picks Cyndaquil
• Isaac has started on the road to being a pokemon professor
• He is an impeccable assistant
• Will probably be most interested in ultra space and ultra beasts
• Hell yes he's going into space, it's for science
• Cyndaquil will probably be a cute assistant to Isaac, making sure he isn't cold when he falls asleep at his desk, giving cuddles when needed, and being a sweetheart
• This type of assistance warms Isaac's heart, Cyndaquil was the right decision
• Isaac isn't the best at batting, it's stressful and he's all over the place, why would he willingly put his little Cyndaquil in danger?
• But when he does he's quite defensive and uses items a lot
• Cyndaquil would probably learn to be great at finding space samples Issac might want
• Cyndaquil probably would have a hard time getting necessary experience to evolve, but in time he would probably evolve battling against ultra beasts and saving Isaac from them
• Isaac would be very nice to travel with but be warned he is training to be a professor, so expect him to stop at labs.
...
Dazai :
• There are bird Pokemon that remind him of Bunta but he wants something different this time
• Foakie, it seems good at stealth, which means it'll be incredible at climbing through windows
• Dazai and Froakie immediately get along, even though Froakie isn't as much into pranks, jokes, or teasing like Dazai is with the mansion residents
• They are both kinda relaxed
• Froakie is fond of the slight chaos energy Dazai seems to emit sometimes, it's fun chaos not evil chaos :)
• Dazai appreciates the more slightly down to earth nature of Froakie
• Dazai having a water type now would probably try Mantine surfing and probably make friends with Grimsley due to similar clothing styles and having water type pokemon
• Dazai would probably have the most unexpected pokemon journey out of the residents
• He would probably get to becoming a pro Mantine surfer.
• Froakie would follow that path too
• Froakie would eventually evolve into Frogadier and then Greninja due to battles with Grimsley
• He would be fun to hang around
...
Sebastian :
• Would probably go with Squirtle due to familiarity and nostalgia (he is from your time and Squirtle is quite popular, lots of people have a soft spot for gen one)
• He won't waste a second and get battling to make it evolve
• Now imagine this guy having a Blastoise to wash laundry.
He'll never spend too much time washing again.
• even though Blastoise is bulky Sebastian will happily train it to be a good butler like he is
• Sebastian will probably go on a pokemon journey that leads him to the Unova striaton city gym.
• Why? It's like a gym made for butlers! Did you see the uniforms?
• he'll probably still keep tabs on what the residents are doing too somehow
• He'll probably have fun learning the history of this place although re-learning history even if it is a new one might be a slap in the face
• He could probably have Blastoise do small bursts of water or a gentle bubble beam to clean hard surfaces and windows too
• He would possibly make friends with Az from Kaloa and Hapu from Alola while learning fun history facts
• traveling with him would be pleasant
....
Napoleon :
• He would pick Piplup
• Was there even competition? Ok maybe Charizard was an attractive offer but Piplup becomes an Emperor it's practically screaming his name.
• He would waste no time meticulously and throughly training it and his team
• He will have an Empoleon in no time
• He will probably be on par with all the strongest trainers
• Will probably become a pokemon master easily and will have beaten the league in every region
• probably feels good to pokemon battle, it's refreshing and fun, will probably battle Jean from time to time.
• hard to describe what he focuses on most, but probably special attack
• It would act just like Napoleon
• Napoleon probably likes the idea of battles with no death
• Napoleon will see Empoleon as a close partner and friend
• He probably has a bunch of Pp up's and Hp up's in his bag, not many restores or potions, c'mon this guy doesn't lose he doesn't need them
• He would probably be thrilling to travel with, like having your own 3d action novel play out before your eyes
...
Jean :
• holy boi is lost here, they're all kind of strange but eventually he gives in and picks one.
• Sinvy
• it's calm and honestly a bit mysterious
• He would train his Snivy well, it would be just as strong as him
• it wouldn't take long to evolve
• he'll probably become good friends with it, tell it all about where he comes from
• Jean would probably be the most homesick :(
• He would probably pick a job like looking after legendary pokemon shrines and temples
• He'll probably run into the other residents a lot
• I feel like for him to like it here something big should happen, like meeting Arceus and having a battle
• Then he and his now Serperior would probably bond over that moment
• after that he would probably come to love pokemon
...
Mozart :
• He was partial to Popplio Primarina but Arthur already claimed it
• Well all of them are cute and kind of interesting, and he's not against teaching it music
• Torchic it is since it's a bird and birds sing well
• Now Mozart's Torchic is quite musically gifted so they actually get along quite well, it can also dance nicely.
• He eventually evolved it into it's final evolution Blaziken with the help of Jean and Napoleon
• Mozart will probably write music for pokemon musicals and contests
• Probably during a heated session of music writing, he and Blaziken will get so in sync that he discovers that mega evolution is a thing that exists
• He will probably make writing music popular in this universe
• He might also be quite homesick
• But he does enjoy Blaziken's company
• He isn't too big on batting without the help of Jean and Napoleon but he's probably offensive rather than defensive
• He is pretty a good trainer and carries all the pokemon essentials
• It would probably be sweet and bit exhausting traveling with him, he'll get loads of music ideas
.....
(I'll also include the unholy trio, Vlad, Faust, and Charles because why not)
...
Vlad :
• Would pick Bulbasaur
• Venusaur is a huge flower monster c'mon, a deadly flower has Vlad written all over it
• He would probably be excellent at training it so evolution would be easy
• He would probably be an elite four
• He probably focuses more on attack during battles
• He may or may not be on a quest to catch a legendary or all of them
• He might create a new evil team...maybe
• He really does look like a good evil team boss, and Venusaur can look threatening if raised to be threatening
• Venusaur would adore Vlad, almost worship him
• Vlad will make it the prettiest flower and care for Venusaur well
• Mega evolution would be unlocked for him
• He would probably be an interesting fellow to travel with
• would probably like pokemon
• Ultra space travel would probably be a thing for him once he and Venusaur get ahold of Lunala or Solagelo
...
Charles :
• Needs something as clingy and energetic as he is
• Scorbunny it is
• They would probably feel a magical connection instantly
• He would train very hard with it although battling might be difficult because he gets worried when pokemon faint
• He is probably a big fan of Gigantamax and Dynamax
• loves the loud Stadium music in Galar
• He would probably want to be a gym trainer and take over the galar fire gym once Kabu retires
• He has mastered attack and defense
• Charles would probably cuddle Scorbunny a lot
• He would still cuddle Cinderace once it's all evolved
• He would probably also be good at cooking
• He probably has a lot of potions a stuff too just incase
• He probably likes watching how cute Cinderace is when it's eating berries
• He probably loves Cinderace's fluffy ears
• He really likes how fun pokemon are
• He is probably really pumped and fun to travel with, some aspects of his personality might be slightly Ash ketchum-ish
...
Faust :
• Rowlet's final evolution is a ghost type you say?
• He'll take it
• He would probably also be a pokemon professor, but not quite like in a professor Oak kind of way, he also wouldn't be much like Isaac either, He'll probably resemble evil team scientists bit he'll have a heart like Colress from Unova
• He'll probably be interested in studying Giratina or Yveltal for starters
• He probably wouldn't get along with Rowlet off the bat because it's scared that it might be dissected
• But Rowlett will see his sweet side and they will eventually be inseparable friends
• Faust will love the ability spirit shackle that the final evolution of Rowlett, Decidueye possesses
• Evolving it wouldn't be a pokemon for Faust
• He has a whole vast world to research now, he's probably on cloud nine
• He's probably excellent at batting even if he doesn't do it that much
• He might join an evil team if they fall in line with his plans
• Traveling with him wouldn't be boring that's for sure

I was on Arthur’s wiki a while back and one of the secrets said that Arthur doesn’t actually like Dazai. I’ve only just started Arthur’s route so I was wondering if that was true or not?
Sure thing! I can offer what I know about the two up to this point!
To my knowledge it is indeed true that Arthur harbors a great deal of disdain for Dazai, though in other routes he can be more subtle about his feelings towards the man. Before I can really speak to why Arthur dislikes him so much, I feel like we need to establish two really important reference points in terms of their understanding/view of the world.
Arthur, like it or not, has one fundamental belief about the world he inhabits. And that is that the world is an evil place. It is a place where good cannot survive, and as such that means every single person he comes into contact with must be marred by some kind of wrongdoing or ill intent. It is his justification for his largely selfish behavior, the reason why he deems it okay that he lives with no thought for the future or hope for better.
Dazai, believe it or not, does not exist far away from this understanding of the world. For all of the man’s silliness, he does not live in some kind of la la land where everything is perfect and fun all the time. To the contrary, he has seen and known a great deal of tragedy; he knows how unforgiving the world can be, how unfair and overwhelming the weight of everything is.
Knowing this, one might not be so surprised. After all, they both deal with so much of their trauma/pain with humor--the classic comedic misdirection to force attention elsewhere. Why then, does Arthur feel so much dislike? Aren’t they kindred spirits, in a way?
This is where one absolutely key difference comes into play.
The difference is that Dazai does not take a deterministic stance in regards to the misconduct and cruelty that tends to plague human society. The difference, in other words, is surprisingly simple: hope. Dazai may feel hopeless about all of the difficult things that exist in the world, and in the ways people hurt each other--but he still wants people to be happy. He still wants to work to alleviate people’s unhappiness, show them ways to smile and laugh, to forget their pain and ease disagreements. It’s...a little cliche, but if I’m being honest, Dazai understands one of the hardest things a person has to learn when they reach their lowest points.
Hope is something that you give yourself. You have to be the one to decide to want better, to work for better. And when things don’t improve fast enough, you have to carry those broken pieces with as much courage and grace as you can muster. Dazai I must admit, does this with more finesse than anyone gives him credit for. He is something of a chameleon, taking on the colors of others as he weaves in and out of their view, never betraying his true desolation. (The problem in that, however, is that he never asks for help until it’s far too late--and in the case of Ikevamp, never asks for help at all for the vast majority of his screentime.)
This isn’t to play a game of moral superiority. Dazai’s approach isn’t a perfect one by any means; it is simply the only way he knew how to engage with the world and remain true to himself and his love for others (whether he is consciously aware of this fact or not is none of my concern, he’s an idiot and I love him). Arthur’s approach is flawed as well, but it’s flawed in a much more harmful way. To assume that every course of action you take is a justified one without taking into account the people you are engaging with is just asking to step on people’s comfort zones. You fundamentally cannot be sensitive without context; it is the prerequisite of any form of compassion or kindness. The reason people like Leonardo or Comte succeed at making friends and gathering others around them is that they are very active and attentive when it comes to interacting with other people. They pay close attention to a person’s sensitivities. What subjects bother them? What is their body language telling me? How do the circumstances contribute to what they’re feeling, and how can I distract or alleviate in a way that is productive? While this seems like a robotic process--an obvious one--when laid out like this, it’s much more complicated and requires a great deal of experience to perfect in real time. Their charisma is absolutely hard won; it took them hundreds of years of trial and error to get there.
And, more than anything, Comte and Leonardo and Dazai practically exude good will. They aren’t just skilled at dealing with people and that’s why they don’t debacle as much as Arthur does in his attempts to reach out. Those three truly want nothing more than to see people at ease. When others are in distress, they feel it as though it were their own. They don’t assess pain in terms of false equivalence, to my understanding--they think that everyone’s experience is different, but no less troubling for that fact. Arthur, on the other hand, tends to be a lot more focused on himself. I’m in so much pain, I’m so upset about how the world is overwhelming me, I’m the one that should be angry/crying/upset right now not you. One thing I want to highlight here is that I don’t mean to belittle Arthur’s suffering; I have no doubt that he’s seen his share of heartache and that he needs real help (therapy for the love of god). But that doesn’t make his constant insistence on making things about him okay. It doesn’t make his bitterness with people that choose to look after the feelings of others okay.
And here, is where we get to the crux of this reply. It is my understanding that the reason Arthur harbors so much resentment towards Dazai is what I have just stated two sentences ago. Arthur sees how Dazai copes with similar crippling fear of the world’s difficulties, and not only does he manage to conceal it better--he also just sincerely gives a damn about people. And not only does it show, it makes people feel a great deal of warmth for Dazai, even if he’s crazy weird. I think Arthur really does envy this capacity for flexibility, the impressive way Dazai can move with the flow of things. Arthur is so set in the past, is so desperate to find happiness that he will strangle what little he has between his own two hands. Dazai knows happiness is never guaranteed, and has given up trying to claim it. Instead he just does his best every day, even if he feels like a failure by the end of it all.
Perhaps yet another reason Arthur is upset at Dazai could be Dazai’s easy willingness to give up on himself without listening to the protests of others in regards to the subject, much like how Dazai hates it when Isaac gives up despite so much well-meaning potential...
So yeah! That’s how I understand their similarities and differences c:

i know i said no essay bUT HERE’S A LONG ONE
- spoilers for beast au ahead -
BEAST: On being human and alive
What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to be living?
The characters here refer to Beast AU’s characters, but I will specify when I am referring to the main universe’s respective characters.
Dazai and Akutagawa: what is a beast? who is the beast?
Dazai in the Beast AU, having glimpsed into the alternate universes, had concocted an elaborate plan to ‘save’ an universe where Odasaku got to write his novel. I would like to think, that this Dazai saw the lives of other Dazais who had left the Port Mafia and lived a purposeful life where he could genuinely be a good person and help others, surrounded by people he cares about and who also genuinely care for him (thus, in spite of all the suicide jokes, Dazai in main universe is actually clinging onto life pretty tightly). But Dazai in the Port Mafia was still a person who hadn’t learnt to appreciate human life as being something more than the act of moving and breathing. As smart as he was, he hadn’t had the maturity to understand empathy, sympathy, and the value of having connection with others. Main universe’s Dazai, in fact, is still learning to do so. He has a long way to go, but you realise that it is his connections with people like Oda, Atsushi and the ADA that give him purpose to live another day, and help him be so much more successful in pulling off his schemes since people actually trust and open up to him. You can argue that he would still have been successful being his old Port Mafia self, except with a lot more deaths and violence. But, he would have lived a very short life. Which, was what happened in the Beast AU.
Beast AU’s Dazai, latching onto the regret of main universe’s Dazai, and encouraged by his own lack of will to live in his present life, decided that this universe didn’t matter (since he technically had already ‘lived’ in other timelines) and set on a path to help Oda finish writing a novel. It is incredibly selfish, because for everyone else, this was the only life they ever had, would ever lived. By the end of the book, Dazai realised this. He got called out by Oda for it. In their one and only meeting, Oda noted that Dazai was almost childlike in the way he tried to recreate a friendship that never existed. When Oda told Dazai that they were not friends and that he would do everything in his power to get Akutagawa back, Dazai understood. At the last stage of his grand plan, where he was to die, it had seemed like he got what he wanted - Oda had his book written and had led a nice life after all. But was it really what Dazai wanted? Was he not just slave to the main universe’s Dazai’s wishes?
Akutagawa in Beast AU isn’t very much different from Akutagawa in the main universe, at least until Dazai came about and changed everything. Dazai in the Beast AU, had become the Port Mafia boss at a really young age. All the immaturity and issues mentioned above get ramped up here. He controlled the port mafia with an iron fist. I would think it was harder for him, because at least for Mori, he had years to build his way up. The rumours that Dazai killed Mori to usurp his position made it harder for Dazai to consolidate his power. He knew that he needed multiple figures of fear to rule. In the main universe, Dazai was an executive who didn’t know the existence of Atsushi. Akutagawa was the only one he could mould into a similar role he was looking for. Thus, Beast AU’s Dazai went to Akutagawa first.
But in the main universe, Dazai realised too late that Akutagawa was too 'wild’. He was a blunt kind of mass weapon of destruction, too much of a wild card. In any case, Dazai was just an executive then, and Akutagawa served his purpose most of the time, and Mori had a good range of competent supporters he could use. Chuuya actually respected and was extremely loyal to Mori. In the Beast AU, Dazai didn’t have that kind of support. But he needed one, controllable weapon from the shin soukoku for his future plans. He tested Akutagawa by letting him kill all the gang members (in the main universe, Dazai had them killed as a ‘gift’ to Akutagawa to entice him to join Port Mafia). Akutagawa killed them extremely brutally, almost animalistically. Too wild for Dazai’s needs. That was okay, because Atsushi was perfect, and Dazai knew of Atsushi’s existence. Atsushi had a moral compass and knew right from wrong. He was only uncontrollable when influenced by his ability and he turned into a tiger, but this can be managed by a brutal spiked choker around his neck. His conscience, along with his fragile mentality, allowed Dazai to perfectly control his actions by using said conscience against Atsushi, without the unpredictable risks that Akutagawa posed.
Here’s the important thing: Dazai thought that Akutagawa was a ‘beast’. A beast is a thing controlled by its nature. It cannot be controlled by anything else besides a severe master. It is dangerous, it is wild, it is irrational, but it is innocent. After all, it is only doing what its instincts call for it to do. How can one be guilty, when it does not know what it is doing is wrong? If it is evil, then all it knows is evil deeds. Nothing one does can change it. After all, Akutagawa was inclined towards destruction, and he was talented in it. He tends towards irrational destruction with utter disregard for his or others’ lives. Gin was injured while saving Akutagawa during the massacre, and he abandoned her for mindless, hopeless revenge. This fact was used against Akutagawa - Dazai rejected him over it and took Gin away. Dazai told Gin that Akutagawa had abandoned her for violence and would abandon her again because when it came down to it, he was a destructive beast who cannot ignore his nature and he cannot love the way normal humans do. Akutagawa proved Dazai’s point when he attacked Atsushi for calling him out on this, even though Atsushi was leading him to Gin. Gin, out of resentment and love, left Akutagawa so that Akutagawa could live on, like he was a wolf that belonged to the forest.
But Dazai was wrong. Akutagawa had lived in environments that had shaped him to be extremely reactive, violent and constantly on survival mode. He would react to threats with immediate violence. But that did not make him inherently a beast. Even he had nothing, he acted as a protector for the children, and led them as much as he could. After Oda found him, offered him food and shelter and gave him a chance to live a life beyond constant survival, he flourished. He bonded with Tanizaki over the love of their sisters. He agreed to ADA’s conditions for helping him find his sister even though he could have simply attacked them for answers. When Kenji showed him the rice plains he was enraptured by the sight. He learnt to plant rice with Kenji and had continued to help him with farming even when he had no reason to help him. He sucked at paperwork but was really good at keeping with Kunikida’s schedules and helping him track and catch criminals (and without killing them!). He helped Oda babysit 15 kids by making playgrounds, showing up for their PTAs and helping them be more confident in school. When he had the opportunity, he could choose to be kind. When he had the patient guidance of a loving community, he could learn from them and change. (Minor scene at the start of the novel: When Akutagawa gets hot tea spilt onto him, Tanizaki and Kunikida sensed instinctive bloodlust on him. But what he really did, was to catch the tea cups and the serving tray swiftly with Rashomon and hand it back to the waitress.)
Oda pointed it out rightly - Akutagawa was an emotional person and he cared too much. When things he cared about were hurt, these emotions took control of him and he would lash out in rather violent ways. And he would feel guilty over it. But, how can a beast feel guilty? It is interesting that in the Beast AU, Atsushi was hardly ever referred to as a beast, even when he was famous for being unable to recognise friend from foe when he was in a tiger state. One of the more obvious parallels is then when Akutagawa noted that Atsushi was driven mad by guilt. And Akutagawa slowly saw it in himself. They were similar that way - both were hounded by the guilt of a irreversible mistake that destroyed/changed their lives. Akutagawa never forgave himself for leaving Gin alone that night when Dazai took her away, to the point that he wanted to die. He only wanted to find and kill two people. One was Dazai. The second was himself. He was afraid of this uncontrollable beast he felt was inside him.
Oda told him not to chase the beast for a good reason - Akutagawa was not a beast. But he could choose to be one, if he followed that path of no return. Kunikida at the crucial fight point, when urging Akutagawa to stand up and continue fighting said it too: that Akutagawa was not an evil person, but he could choose to be a good person if he chose to become a detective with the ADA. And Akutagawa chose. He allowed Atsushi to live, and told him to keep on fighting and living. He continued working with ADA, trying to solve cases and save people, so that he could prove to himself that he was not a beast, and that one day, Gin could see that he was better and came back to him. I think, even in the main universe, Dazai knows he is wrong about Akutagawa - he may have given up in trying to teach non-terrorising skills in Akutagawa when he was still in the Port Mafia, but he has since tried to amend his mistakes through Atsushi.
Being able to make choices is what makes you human. Choosing to do things beyond our instincts, our nature. We are good, because of the choices that we have made. Likewise, we are bad, because of what we have done. Akutagawa was born to have traits of a rabid hellhound, but he didn’t become one. No one tamed him. What happened, was that he had met with kindness. He had friends. He shared his thoughts and his past and his feelings to the members of the ADA, and they had connected with him and helped him out as much as they could, even when he had yet to fulfil the ‘spirit’ part of the exam. Kenji and Akutagawa had an interesting conversation in the fields. Kenji pointed out that while his companions had died, he had continued to live well. Akutagawa then wondered if it was because his companions have given him the best parts of themselves for him to live on. It is the connection with others that make life worthy of living, that make life mean something. To be human, is to make choices. To be judged on our worth as a human, is to be judged by our very actions. This is inherent in what it means to be alive: living is only worthy when we can share our lives with others.
Now contrast this with Dazai. Did he really have a choice? If he did, he made some dreadfully selfish ones that destroyed and traumatised the people around him. The Dazai in this world had his own experiences that made him a separate person from the other Dazais after all - his actions and the consequences were his and his own to bear. Who was he to have something that the other Dazais had worked to achieve? The Dazais in other universes may have lost Oda, but Oda was a friend, who shared memories and time with him, who understood and seen him. The loss was devastating, but main universe’s Dazai didn’t truly lose Oda. Oda was still alive, in his mind, giving him the motivation to live on, reminding him to reach out to others and telling him that he was not alone. Dazai in the Beast AU was truly alone. He might have thought that he could replicate a connection in this universe, but his actions had made them nonexistent. As much as Oda was kind and empathetic and perceptive in every universe, it was just impossible. And Oda’s life involved people he cared deeply about, people who Dazai had hurt. Dazai, in the Lupin bar that he had never been in this universe, may have been in denial to tide over the years of waiting for Oda to finish writing and for shin soukoku to develop the best they can be, but once he spoke to Oda, the illusion shattered. Even with all his knowledge of the world, it was never going to recreate a purpose to live. No matter his good intentions, Dazai would never receive the acknowledgement he badly wanted from Oda. Oda would never give him the relief of forgiveness Dazai wanted for the terrible deeds he had done. And Dazai would die, in misery, fulfilling a wish that didn’t truly belong to him.
If Dazai truly didn’t have a choice, then, he was compelled by forces that created this condition within him - he was then, the only beast of this universe.

      character study series--- d.azai o.samu
where do i even begin--- dazai is possibly... probably... the most complex character within my little roster. and, like izaya  ( who i’ve already done a post like this for, which can be found here )  and the rest of my muses i suppose, my dazai is very headcanon based  ( though i do take a lot of reference from the series itself, i tend to portray him as i see fit and most enjoy doing so without sacrificing the things that i believe to be pivotal to his character );  to be entirely honest, when it comes to the manga, for bungou stray dogs and for nearly every series to ever exist, i’m not, nor do i imagine that i will ever be, entirely caught up.
all that said, let us delve into dazai; into the way that he thinks, the way that he functions, the way that he acts, and generally who is he as a person  ( as well as how i, personally, view and portray his character ).
let me first kick things off with a significant change that i’ve made in regard to his character, in how he’ll be portrayed here on this blog. dazai canonically has a deeply troubled mind. though his frequent, and oftentimes wistful, talk of death and his suicidal behaviors are rarely, if ever, taken seriously within the series itself  ( rather being treated as a source of comedic relief, which does somewhat bother me, but it is what it is ),  likely due to this penchant that he has for jesting and for over-dramatics, the reality that his mind is very dark and very deeply troubled remains. he feels as though there is this deep, dark hole  ( an emptiness, a void )  within him that he’s incapable of filling, regardless of however hard that he tries. a large majority of his life was spent dedicated to this, to trying to fill it, to trying to find some sort of reason to live  ( which is why he had initially aligned himself with the port mafia to begin with; he believed that he could, perhaps, find what he’d been searching for, what he’d been longing for, if he lived this life of conflict, of bloodshed and war ),  though, obviously, this was to no avail. and while, yes, he will at times use self-depreciating humor, and while, yes, at times his humor may be dark, a bit morbid, his depression and his suicidal thoughts, tendencies, are not rooted in comedy, they are not a source of comedic relief and i, personally, don’t write him, portray him, in that particular light.
that said, does he ultimately want to die? in his youth, yes, absolutely. he hadn’t yet met anyone that he cared for  ( he had no attachments, had never felt nor experienced any genuine form of love ).  he too no joy from life, spent all this time searching, aching, for purpose, yet couldn’t find it.
and then he met people who meant something. he met chuuya who, though he was adamant that he couldn’t stand him, was interesting. he met odasaku, who managed to break through his barriers unlike anyone before  ( or after )  him, who wormed his way into dazai’s heart and gave him this friendship that he never knew that he’d wanted, nor needed, who provided him with a much needed positive role model and with this beacon of hope. this--- this was pivotal in setting about a turning point, in finally setting him on a different path, in giving him the purpose that he’d been searching for all those years. although an irrefutable tragedy, oda’s death ultimately brought about new life in that it  ( and in oda’s dying words )  gave dazai a will to live.
all the same, he does still suffer from depression, he’s an insomniac, and he does still struggle with suicidal ideation  ( in that he still thinks about death, about dying and all of the ways that he could go about doing it, fairly often ).
moving on,
this is a man with a very dark and violent past, an important thing to keep in mind. while little is known about his past bar from the knowledge that he was affiliated with the port mafia, that he’s been rooted within this world since he was around fourteen years old, back when he met mori ougai  ( as well as the fact that he managed to wind up being the youngest executive in port mafia history ),  it can be surmised that his time spent working beneath mori likely, at least in part, has resulted in his penchant for apathy, his tendency to emotionally detach himself from others, from death, and from traumatic experiences as a whole  ( he’s actually been shown attempting to fill that hole in his heart, in fact, to find joy, to feel something in causing harm to and in killing others, though he never quite does manage to get what he wants ).  his experience as a killer and as highly skilled interrogator  ( it’s worth noting that he, in fact, specialized in torturing others for information; he’s even once gone so far as to state that there wasn’t a single prisoner who ultimately didn’t wind up spilling everything when he was the one tasked with retrieving it--- and while still being a child ),  has been alluded to on more than one occasion and, even to this day, he still manages to command respect and to inspire fear throughout the port mafia, albeit no longer being a member himself.
he is unconcerned with the idea good and evil. while he currently affiliates himself with the armed detective agency, now working to protect  ( and to save )  the city and the lives of its inhabitants, his motivation to do so was primarily spurred by the words of a friend prior to his passing;  ’ be on the side that saves people. if both sides are the same, be a good man; save the weak and protect the orphans. neither good nor evil means much to you, i know… but that’d make you at least a little bit better. i know better than anyone because… i am your friend. ’
it’s these words, oda sakunosuke, that finally sets him on a different path, that leads him to meeting the members of the armed detective agency, that leads him to meeting nakajima atsushi, an orphan who’s life he, ultimately, does wind up making a difference in, providing him with much needed guidance  ( though to say that all of his methods, and all of his motives, in doing so are genuinely good, genuinely selfless, and always would be a little hard-pressed--- also, it’s worth keeping in mind that this is the second orphan to have been taken beneath his wing; the first being akutagawa ryunosuke who’s experiences with dazai were significantly different, the training that he endured beneath him being absolutely hellish, horrific, and cruel ).
ultimately, with him, the ends justify the means and, so, the actions, whether good or evil, mean little to him. he’s willing to use any means, any method, to achieve his goals; this includes playing dirty, causing harm to others, killing / death when deemed necessary, and so on and so forth. such as, for example, purposefully deflating the airbag in someone’s car prior to a car ‘accident’, in turn causing extensive injuries that he’s only willing to have healed by a fellow ability user in exchange for having a young girl pardoned of her past crimes. the end goal was ultimately good, sure, but the means of getting there were anything but.
he’s also an exceptional liar. while his ability to intricately weave together falsehoods, from the most small and insignificant of lies to the most complex of tales, comes naturally, his time spent working for the port mafia only honed his abilities further. and while is doesn’t lie constantly, perhaps not even frequently  ( instead opting to simply abstain from providing an answer altogether ),  he is, in himself, a walking fabrication, putting on a perennial facade all his own; fake. his true thoughts and emotions are rarely so much as even alluded to, frequently hidden behind a mask of his creation, perfectly crafted and nearly impossible to crack. furthermore, his true intentions, frequently, are left unrevealed until he, himself, chooses to reveal them. in truth, there isn’t a person alive who truly knows or who genuinely understands him. there are a select few  ( such as mori ougai, nakahara chuuya )  who come, in their own way, close through all of their time spent working with him  ( a former mentor, a former partner ),  though none are able to comprehend his actions, his mind, in their entirely, not quite the way that oda was once able to.
it doesn’t help that he is also a man of mystery and deflection. while he may talk and act as though he’s an open book  ( and believe me, he does just this and often ),  he rarely, if ever, speaks of himself, in regard to his past and present alike. thoughts are locked away, left solely for him to ruminate upon, and emotions are kept hidden, locked deep, deep within, if not attempted to be brushed away in their entirety. furthermore, he has a habit of leaving his comrades, his friends if you can quite call them that, in the dark when it comes to long-game plans and strategies that he has devised and it’s virtually impossible to get a straight or genuine answer from him upon asking a question, so most times it isn’t even worth the effort that it takes to form the words  ( not that this has ever stopped anyone from trying, much to their ultimate chagrin ).
and, finally, a basic character and personality breakdown,

he covers himself in bandages for two very specific reasons. the first being that his body is absolutely riddled with scars; while some were obtained during his port mafia days, equally as many were self-inflicted. the second, they serve as a sort of security blanket, providing him with an unconventional source of comfort.
he’s very well read. he enjoys novels of a wide variety, though he’s usually only seen reading books about suicide or death. he isn’t partial to poetry, however.
he isn’t a big eater whatsoever. he’s generally a one meal per day sort of person and doesn’t snack particularly often furthermore.
he listens to music fairly often during his free time  ( when he isn’t reading ).  while he doesn’t have much of a preference as far as genres are concerned, he does gravitate primarily toward music that he finds calming, more mellow, or relatable.
he’s highly skilled in the art of lock-picking. he could chalk it up to his time spent with the port mafia, but in truth it’s a talent he’s had since he was a kid.
he doesn’t have a drivers license. he’s never been especially concerned with getting himself one and doesn’t really find that he feels the need for one even now.
he dislikes fizzy and / or bubbly beverages. for the most part, he’s a tea or a coffee drinker, although he’s fine with water, too. also, whiskey. he loves a good whiskey.
he enjoys good company  ( although he finds that it’s rare to come by ),  good and meaningful conversation, summer storms, late night rain showers, autumn leaves, seafood, and fresh, clean scents.
he dislikes overly sweet foods, the sound of babies crying  ( and loud noises in general ),  dogs, hot weather, and boring, tedious, and / or repetitive work  ( such as paperwork, for example ).
he frequently smells of soap, laundry detergent, and cotton intermingled with a natural scent all his own; fresh, warm, and clean with a hint of musk.

(suicide tw, suicidal thoughts tw, suicide mention tw, death tw, depression tw)
Dazai was orphaned at birth, never knowing who his parents and never quite caring for that matter either. While the other children at the orphanage he met would often ask or spend hours talking about what their parents must have been like, he looked at the conversation as being a pointless waste of time. In fact, he didn’t talk much with the other children at all. He was a quiet kid, often sitting to the side and observing everyone carefully, picking situations apart until he figured out how every tiny event had played out and what had caused it to play out in such a way. It didn’t take long for him to learn that he had a knack for knowing how people worked and it took even less time for him to start using it to his advantage.
He found no joy in simple everyday activities like the games all of the other kids would play. No matter how many school teachers encouraged him to get involved, he refused, sticking to where he wanted on the sidelines. For as long as he could remember, there had never been anything that made him happy, there was always this emptiness in him, a hole that could be filled by nothing and nobody. There was hardly anything he was emotionally invested in and when he did turn to things that were logic based, he found it all too easy. School felt as if it were below him, everything that was taught was far too simple.
Dazai spent years searching for an escape, for some possible way to fill that hole and when even academics failed him, he turned back to people. He forced himself to gain an even deeper insight and with time, he learned there wasn’t a soul he couldn’t predict. He thought there wasn’t a single part of the whole universe that could provide even a challenge to him. Upon this realization, he instead decided to look for an escape. At fourteen, he thought he found his solution in suicide, but it landed him in a hospital. It was there that he met a man that would change his life forever.
The doctor who helped Dazai recover, a man named Ogai Mori, took Dazai in at the end of his stay at the hospital. It was that very night that Dazai learned he was not who he said he was. The man was in fact a member of the largest organized crime unit, a group called the Port Mafia. After killing the previous leader in front of Dazai, Mori told him that the story they would tell was that the leader had died of an illness and that he wished for Mori to take his place. Dazai, unaffected from what he had just witnessed, decided that perhaps in a world of bloodshed and war he could find a way to fill the hole that’s always been there.
So, Dazai stays, Mori grooming him and raising him to one day be his right hand man. But Dazai discovers, he not only fits in with the Port Mafia, but he excels there. Having no apprehensions about doing anything, Dazai rises in the ranks faster than anyone before, becoming the youngest executive in the history of the Port Mafia at just sixteen. He gains a reputation as being ruthless and calculating, cruel and mysterious. He’s known as a man who demands to be feared not with his words but with his actions, treating even the subordinate he’s training named Akutagawa without even a shred of mercy. Dazai is cold to nearly everyone, startling even Mori with how dark and intelligent he proves himself to be.
Yet, to a certain extent, Dazai is an actor. His lies and manipulation going so far that even the true version of himself is rarely seen by anyone. His attitude changing depending on who he is surrounding himself with in that moment. The first person who he showed another side of himself to was a boy his age named Chuuya, who he had been ordered to work with for a few missions. It was a partnership that became known by most, due to the sheer damage the two often caused when they did work on something together. The two quickly formed a rivalry but behind all that was something similar to a friendship.
To Dazai, Chuuya was a person who he enjoyed teasing, resulting in them bickering whenever in the presence of the other. He found what bothered him and latched onto it, making jokes and jabs about anything he thought would annoy the other enough to produce a reaction. It wasn’t hard to do, Chuuya was a person that was hot-headed and Dazai got under his skin with ease. It was rare for Dazai to see anyone as his equal and while he didn’t quite see Chuuya as that, he saw him as being closer to that than really anyone else. It resulted in him being not as ruthless, to smile and laugh even, but even that wasn’t enough to get rid of the empty feeling that filled Dazai.
The only person who ever came close to that was someone Dazai met back when he was a new member. It was a low-ranking member who rarely did any jobs of much interest named Oda. Oda was the only person to truly know Dazai, to know about how he felt as if he were alone in the world, how nothing fixed the hole. Not only was he the only person to truly know Dazai, but he was the only one to understand him. Dazai clinged to this, spending most of his free time with him for years. To others looking in, it was odd, it was a time where Dazai was gaining notoriety, right before he became an executive, most wouldn’t think he had time for some lowly member that truly didn’t contribute much. But the closer Dazai grew with him, the more he smiled. Even after becoming an executive, he would push Oda to talk about the menial tasks he did that day instead of explaining whatever grandiose plan he had put into action that day.
Two years after becoming an executive, at eighteen, Dazai and Oda would go drinking together in a tiny bar in the part of town that most wouldn’t be caught dead in late at night. He would order the same drink, he would always beg Oda to talk about his day, and they’d toast to something. Little by little, Dazai started to feel happier, to taste the hint of what life might be like if he could only find a way to not feel so empty.
Just as he thought that might happen, Oda died in a conflict with a rival organization. But just before doing so, he told Dazai that the hole he felt in him would never be filled and that although he knew that good or evil didn’t matter to Dazai, that he should choose good because striving to be a better person was a much more beautiful life to live. His dying wish was for Dazai to change, not who he was, but who he aligned himself with. To this day, Dazai considers Oda to be the only true friend he has ever had in life.
Right after Oda’s death, Dazai left the Port Mafia. After being assigned a mission, he aborted it halfway through and disappeared. With the punishment for desertion being death, Dazai took two years to erase any proof of his existence or trail and left his home planet, travelling around and staying underground until he landed on Yen Sid finally at the age of twenty. From there he scoured for work, anything that would allow for him to do good. He quickly found himself a home in an eccentric group of people who worked at a private investigation business called the Armed Detective Agency. He knew he wouldn’t work well in a place filled with too many rules and with the laid back attitude of everyone, it was a near perfect fit. The people were passionate enough about doing good and they followed the law, often working with police rather than around them.
Now, Dazai is almost unrecognizable from the man he used to be. He’s jovial and positive, often teasing his co-workers and trying to be comedic. His closer coworkers and friends know he was involved with a criminal organization and some are even aware of the fact that he was a high-ranking member within that. But few know the extent of what he did and Dazai would prefer to keep it that way. In fact, he prefers to keep most things close to his chest.
But despite the change in work, the Dazai that did atrocious things is still in there. He’s still calculating and manipulative, he’s still quick-witted, and he’s still just as willing as he always had been to commit those atrocious things if need be. As when it comes down to it, he did just what Oda asked him to do, not to change himself but to change what he did. Now, those skills are being used for good, even if Dazai personally doesn’t care about what they are being used for. He has a knack for finding who they need to and he can easily tell when a someone is lying, not to mention he’s skilled with weapons and in martial arts due to his time with the Port Mafia.
At twenty-two years old now, that feeling of emptiness is still there, present as ever, but it’s faded just slightly. While there are some days he wants to escape from life forever, most of the time that’s not entirely the case anymore. He’s with a good group of people. He has a new partner that he works with that is nothing like Chuuya, but is just as fun to tease and perhaps even easier to. He’s even taken to helping someone named Atsushi, but he treats him fairly and with kindness, not even an ounce of the cruelty he used on his previous subordinate is present. Dazai has learned that Oda was right, that hole of emptiness in him will probably never be filled, but he smiles now when he stares out at the sunset to think, and that’s far more beautiful than how things were in the past.
AESTHETIC ://
bandaged hands, the sound of a lock being picked, the heavy weight of a gun in hand, the smell of old books, the taste of a whiskey on the rocks, the ticking of a clock, matches burning, trusting no one and sharing nothing, a smile that’s never been real, rain hitting the ground on a silent night.
MISC ://
He’s known to be lazy by some of his current co-workers, often making it seem like he’s doing nothing at all when in reality he’s been figuring everything out and just neglecting to tell anyone else his plans or predictions.
He seems to always have some type of injury wrapped in bandages.
Despite not talking about what he used to do, he doesn’t feel guilt over it in anyway but he keeps it a secret as he feels others could use it against him.
Since coming to Yen Sid, he’s run into a few people from his past in the Port Mafia, they’re aware of where he’s at, but they’ve made no moves to attack him yet.
He can be quite selfish, putting his own wants above everyone else’s and not caring who really gets hurt as long as he gets what he wants in the end.
He is always carrying a weapon with him, usually a handgun.
CONNECTION ://
Doppo Kunikida : work partner who he would hesitantly consider a friend.
Atsushi Nakajima : the newest member to the armed detective agency, he’s taken him under his wing and is mentoring him.
Chuuya Nakahara : ex-work partner that he seems to keep running into, an enemy unless a situation arises where they have to work together.
Ryunosuke Akutagawa : someone he was mentoring when he was in the port mafia, only speaks to him when he has a use for him, doesn’t care for him besides that.
