nostalgic food
i’ll want to reference this in the future
Tumblr media
gỏi cuốn (spring roll with chicken, egg, rice noodle, carrot, lettuce, avocado)
Tumblr media
peanut sauce is just peanut butter+water, hoisin+sriracha sauce, and a tiny bit of sesame oil (tastes good with almost anything imo)
Tumblr media
yellow curry
rice noodle with chicken, potatoes, yams, onions, carrots in a creamy coconut milk and yellow curry paste broth
lemon juice and salt mix with garlic chili for dipping
Tumblr media
bò kho (vietnamese beef stew)
kho is a cooking technique where a protein is braised in a mixture of fish sauce, sugar, and water or coconut juice to make a salty/savory result
bread dips in stew beef/potatoes dip in lime juice/salt/pepper mix
cucumber slices to offset the salty
Tumblr media
xá xíu (cantonese style bbq pork)
the seasoning mix is made of sugar, powdered soy sauce, onion and garlic powder, and spices
the pink color very much freaked out middle schoolers at lunch
Tumblr media
cơm tấm (broken rice, grilled pork, egg, pickled carrots/daikon with scallions/oil garnish and fish sauce)
Tumblr media
bún bò huế (thick round rice noodle with beef soup)
more "fun" than phở imo
bún bò broth: spicy salty flavor (lemongrass, spicy chili, fermented shrimp paste, fish sauce)
phở broth: earthy sweet flavor (cinnamon, star anise, onion, ginger, garlic, herbs)
Tumblr media
bánh mì (baguette sandwich with chả lụa (pork sausage), xá xíu (cantonese style bbq pork) coriander leaf (cilantro), cucumber, pickled carrots, and pickled daikon combined with pâté and buttery mayonnaise)
Tumblr media
salmon instead of nem nướng̣ (viet grilled pork) with bánh hỏi (rice vermicelli)
feat nori (dried edible seaweed)
wrapped with lettuce and dipped in nước mắm (fish sauce)
Tumblr media
bánh cuốn (rice noodle rolls filled with ground meat, wood ear mushrooms, onions)
topped with chả lụa (pork sausage) and fried red onions and nước mắm (fermented salted fish sauce)
a fav of grandpa's
pizza man mispronounces it as "bun goo" which makes my mom giggle cause the way he says goo sounds like penis
Tumblr media
bánh tét (glutinous rice rolled in a banana leaf into a thick, log-like cylindrical shape, with a mung bean and pork filling)
Tumblr media
bánh rán (deep fried sesame ball filled with mung bean)
Tumblr media
bánh da lợn "pig skin cake" (tapioca starch, rice flour, mung bean, taro, coconut milk)
Tumblr media
bánh bột chiên (fried taro rice cake, a fav of pizza man)
Tumblr media
phở (broth: earthy sweet flavor- cinnamon, star anise, onion, ginger, garlic, herbs)
ive called phở mid but while eating this i was like huh this is good actually then my dad says this time he simmered chicken bones for hours like he's supposed to instead of using canned broth
Tumblr media
improvised bún thịt nướng (rice noodle bowl with chopped grilled pork, egg roll, veggies, crushed peanuts, fish sauce)
a way to deal with leftover noodles from gỏi cuốn
every time i eat this i think of the time me and pizza man were in new orleans and he asked if i wanted to eat at a viet place and i was surprised cause he's not really into a lot of viet food but anyway i got bún thịt nướng
Tumblr media
thịt kho (pork with eggs braised in sticky savory caramel of sugar, fish sauce, coconut water)
i have distinct flashbacks of being in the middle school cafeteria with my thịt kho and kids around me going "what is that??", "ewwww" lol
Tumblr media
cháo (rice porridge with chicken or a white meat fish- often served with crunchy cabbage salad)
my dad likes it with youtiao (chinese donuts)
being sick means eating this! but we also eat it a lot when we’re not sick!
when my mom was young she would say yes to any dude that asked her out and order an obscene amount of food/the most expensive things on the menu and never hear from them again but my dad took her to a cháo place cause that was his favorite but apparently for cheapskates
he proposed two weeks later and she said yes
my mom is such a menace i wanna be just like her

OMG THAT'S ADORABLE 😭 those are all good dishes. Ikat tepi drinks just hit different. Idk what they put in them. Think i know where you're from now haha
I'm a hardcore dimsum fan, maybe next is Kö + 141 as different types of dimsum? 😂😂 I feel bad sending all these requests back to back. How come you draw so fast??!
Usually Ikat tepi has tea or coffee in em!(or as we like to call it, "kopi"), tho! any drink can be place in it tbh, "sirap bandung" (rose syrup drink) or "teh o ais limau" (ice lemon tea) are some examples :] Also here's em going for dimsum! I hope you like it :D(more info about dimsum under the cut if anyone's interested!)
About me drawing things fast, simple, I sold part of my soul to [unidentified entity] :D /j Dont feel bad about requests~ I enjoy receiving em :3
Tumblr media
Siu Mai, 烧卖 for Konig - my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE dimsum, they're round and the filling is wrapped in circular dumpling skins with filling consists of pork and shrimp, sometimes scallions in em!
Big bun, 大包 ("da bao") for Ghost - just a big version of the normal bao with filling in em like pork, chicken, jicama and hard-boiled egg
Fried dumpling, 煎饺子 ("jian jiao zi") for Price - think of it like Japanese Gyoza! I also love this a lot, the fillings are usually chicken, pork or shrimp in em too with the usual, scallions, cabbage and such - pssst, dip it in vinegar! they go well together :DDD
Xiao Long Bao, 小笼包 for Soap - one of the more fancy/expensive dimsum (fun fact the Xiao Long actually means the bamboo steamer thing that the dimsum comes in) some people call it soup dumpling bcuz there are soup inside the lil bao with chicken/pork filling, hence you should eat it with a spoon so you can sip up the soup. There's a lot of history with this so most fancy restaurant like to compete in making the best looking xiao long bao, most notably you will see em showcasing how the soup dumpling have "18 folds"
Deep fried sesame ball, 香麻煎堆仔 or 芝麻球 ("xiang ma jian dui zai" or "zi ma qiu“) for Gaz - ticky rice flour dough, filled with a sweet paste(usually red bean!) and rolled in sesame seeds, and fried until crispy on the outside, but still soft and chewy on the inside, also one of my favourite dessert in dimsum -w-

I know you won't do Snuffy as a father figure yet, so can you do the father trio reacting their child being a mukbang star when they're not playing soccer? Like their child is wearing a disguise so they won't find out. I can imagine their child being put into some kind of boot camp after the father trio found out because they need to stay fit when they are playing soccer. I asked this because I am currently obvious with watching mukbang because of the yummy foods.
Sorry if you expected something serious, but I had no ideas what to write for this. So I let my friend @deerangle3 write this and the way I know them, it's gonna turn into a crackfic. I hope it at least makes you laugh LMAO (Edit after Claire wrote this: we made @wasfuerpainman read this out loud it was the funniest shit ever)
A/N: I FUCKING LOVE SNUFFY!!!!! I WILL ABSOLUTELY INCLUDE HIM!!!! *kisses snuffy passionately on the cheek in a platonic way* ALSO!! "Y/Nzilla" is the username, yk like godzilla but with your name (because youre a god😉😉)
"MHhhhhh~ whis food is so goowd!" Y/N stuffed their mouth with fresh deep-fried shrimps, breaded generously with crunchy panko. The camera was focused on their visage. The live-chat was speeding by at insane speeds.
Footsuckurerer:'Y/Nzilla! I love your content! Eat my flesh please Y/N-Sama!'
Germs985:'HIHIAHIHUGIUAHDASKJ YNNYNYNNYNYNNN!!/"(!")( I LOE YOU PLEASE GIBE ME OYuR ATTENSHPM!!!😍😍🌹❤️❤️🥰🥰🫶'
Such were some of the silly comments Y/N would see every day in the Live Chat.
"Pahahah, they don't know..." Y/N thought to themself, almost snickering. The 'Y/Nsters' as they liked to call themselves, were so obsessed yet they weren't even aware of Y/Ns true appearance.
Yes! A disguise! Y/N wore an obnoxious green wig, though it was worn perfectly, in a way that it looked completely natural (well, dyed, but attached to the head). On top of that, some nicely bedazzled Sunglasses, completely hiding the eyes.
Y/N's Parents were completely unaware of Y/N doing Mukbang. They made good money as well, but knew that their parents probably wouldn't fully approve of Mukbang, because they would rather have their child play soccer. This was also the majority of the reason for the disguise. Another reason was just not wanting to be recognized, or not wanting to show their face to the entire internet.
Y/N lived in a large house with their 4 dads, Noel Noa, Marc Snuffy, Chris Prince and Lavinho. Who knew if they were dating or just friends raising a kid together. From a young age, Y/N was playing soccer. As soon as they learned to walk, there was always a ball o kick. They were never super insistent, never forced soccer on Y/N but it was still a relevant part. In school, Y/N was known for their great soccer skills, as well as captain of the soccer club!
Y/N takes another passionate, big bite of the shrimpilicious sustenance. "mmh mmh mMMMMHH!!! whe fwawors awe mewting on my tONGUE!" Y/N mumbled, the food making their words hardly coherent.
timeskip
"HEYY Y/NNNNNNN MY LitTLE MOUSE!!!" Lavinho jumped at Y/N, hugging them. "WAnna play some FOOTBALL!!""!"!"§"§"!?"??"§???"
Y/N nodded, they assumed their other dads would also be there, and they were right! They kicked the ball back and forth until Chris mentioned something. "Guys, have you seen this new Mukbanger? They're like, totally silly." Chris chuckled. Noa looked at Chris with a "HM?!??!"-ish look. "Since when are you in the Mukbang-Community?" "I'm in it for the nutritional knowledge! Y'know, like, whats good for my muscles." He proudly closed his eyes with a confident expression and flexed his biceps. "I do that too sometimes." Snuffy said.
"Who do you mean?" Y/N asked, slightly afraid of if Chris meant them. "Uhhh they wear a green wig I think!" He raised his finger in an intelligent manner. "Oh, I don't think I've heard of them..." Y/N pretended.
"I think I have"
The conversation went back and forth about this mukbanger. Eventually, Chris pulled up a picture of you in your disguise. "They seem kinda familiar don't they?" Snuffy asked, scratching his chin in thought. "Ya think so?" Lavinho asked, looking a little more closely. "HmMMmmMmmmmmm.... let's just eat dinner." Noa said, walking back toward the house.
The five of them enjoyed a yummy yummy dinner. "I could use these leftovers for my stream tomorrow..." Y/N thought to themself.
timeskip
"Y/N!?!?!?? WHY ARE YOU WEARING A GREEN WIG??? AND EATING???? aRE YOU ajsdk---.ajniu THAT MUKBANGER!??!?!?!??" Chris was in utter shock. He caught them red-handed. Y/N immediately shut down the stream. Chris wasn't supposed to be home! "DAD THIS ISN'T WHAT YOU THINK IT IS!" but Chris had already run out of the room and called your other dads. Oh No!!!
"Mukbang? You??" Snuffy looked at them, a little shocked, or was it amazement? "Do you at least make money?" Lavi asked. "Yea..." Y/N looked down at the ground, perhaps slightly embarrassed. "How much?" Noa wanted to know.
"Uhm,,, like around 3000 on average, but it all depends on how many donations I get..." They mumbled quietly. They all looked a little shocked. Good shocked. "That's pretty... pretty good." Snuffy nodded approvingly.
"Please don't be mad at me..." Tears started welling up in Y/Ns eyes.
"Oh Y/N, Why would we be mad about such a thing?" Noa went in to hug Y/N and the others soon followed, leading to a comforting group hug. "As long as you're safe, happy and healthy, we don't have an issue with it." Snuffy gave them a gentle smile. Chris agreed "As long as your grades don't slip, or you reach an unhealthy weight or something, were totally fine with you doing this as a... side job?"
"Yeah, and you're using a disguise right? So it'll be harder for strangers to find you." Lavi added.
They weren't mad in the slightest, just a little confused maybe, but proud for sure, because they had gotten quite successful! Y/N promised them they would play more soccer, or at least do more physical exercise with them, so that Y/N would stay healthy and not become the next Nicocado Avocado. Surprisingly, Snuffy even suggested that they could join Y/N on a stream sometime. It would surely bump their viewers if a world-class soccer player ate Mukbang with Y/Nzilla! Yet alone four!
timeskip
Sockersucker: "WHAT !?!?!? NOEL NoA STUFFING HIS FACE WITH HOT DOGS?!??!?!"
KeineHoelle: "THIS is the most epic colllabb ever! How did you get into contact with the pro soccer players?"
SalesBadman: "CHRIS PRINC?!?? LAVINSNO!?!?????ßßß?? SNUAFY!? NAO NOEL!??? WHAAAATT IS GOING ON!?!?? I better call my wife."
SnuffyLover69: "OMGOMGOMG SNUFFY AND Y/NZILLA THIS IS INSANE I AM GOING INSANE I WILL SELL MY ORGANS FOR YOU Y/NAND SNUFFY I AM IN ABSOLUTE FISBELIEF HOLY MOLY MACKARONY WHAT INT EH FUCKING BANANAASS!!!!!"
Chat was going absolutely insane, seeing these world-class players eating yummy hotdogs with this odd-looking Mukbanger. The viewer count spiked up to 20k, from the usual 3-5k. More and more people joined the stream, the viewer count kept rising and the donations went insane as well. This was the best day yet, career-wise.
It was a very wholesome eating session with Y/N and their dads.
YUM!

Dimsum @ Beijing Beijing
Went for dimsum here at Beijing Beijing on a weekday last month - totally underestimated how busy it was :O  don’t most people have to work on weekdays?!
It was the 1st dimsum experience here for my family & I. I remember coming here years ago for a dinner & the food was meh. Or maybe bcos of the company. .. the food tasted extra-meh. *shrugs* But the dimsum here . .. wasn’t great.
Tumblr media
Fried taro ‘pastry’. This had a small amount of meat in the middle, but overall, a ball of taro mash that’s been deep-fried. The flavour was quite good, I gotta say. But I’m not a fan of the mushy texture.
Tumblr media
Shrimp rice rolls. Can’t believe this was $7.00! Oh myyyyy . .. the rice rolls weren’t very fresh-tasting. It was thick & there was on avg 1 piece of shrimp per section (total 6). This resembled frozen grocery store rice rolls that was heated up.
Tumblr media
Egg tarts. They look big in photo but they were small. Definitely not the ones you normally see in the bakery section at T&T or something. The crust was mehhhh; the filling was good! Not too sweet, not too egg-y.
Tumblr media
I have no idea what this item is called in English lol! It’s also deep-fried & there’s meat inside. The proportion of the outer batter layer & the meat filling was way off. The batter layer was so thick! One of those “scam” dishes, if you asked me.
Tumblr media
Fried bean curd ‘sheet’ with meat (pork), some mushrooms, & minute amount of carrot. Oh & wood ear fungus too. This was my fav item from this dimsum experience & trust me, this isn’t an item I would even normally order if I were doing the ordering haha
Tumblr media
Sticky rice. The rice texture was good but lacking in flavour. I think the problem was they didn’t include fatty pork in it. Usually, the filling has a fatty pork & the ‘grease’ gives the plain rice flavour. It was also lacking in salted egg. I didn’t expect a large piece but there was none. Overall, mostly bland rice. ..
Tumblr media
Curry squid. I ordered this & was soooooo disappointed! Look at the sauce. What’s wrong with it??? It’s not clingy to dish! The curry should be yellow & thick; however, it was so water-y. Super bland too. ..  *sad*
Tumblr media
Shrimp dumplings. This was my 2nd favourite but honestly, . .. that’s only bcos everything else was not so good so this somehow ended up in 2nd place. The batter/wrapper layer was okay; not bad but not good either. The shrimp amount was generous but lacking in flavour a bit.
Tumblr media
Pork dumplings. .. if you can, don’t order this. I know it’s hard bcos it’s a dimsum staple along with the above item but it was really. .. eeeeeeeek! The filling didn’t mushroom nor shrimp in it & it was lean pork. So all the flavours that you should be expecting weren’t absent.
Tumblr media
Bcos we always get this .. . the beef flat rice noodle dish that my family likes. This smelled really good when it arrived at our table. Flavour was alright as well; wasn’t bland, wasn’t too salty. The noodles were, generally speaking, good too as they didn’t stick to each other & were quite loose. I did not like the beef. It was very ‘treated’ & soft, & .. . kind of sketchy lol I don’t know how to explain it. I think they used too much corn starch or something during the preparation stage. The biggest thing was. .. although the taste & aroma was decent, it was lacking the ‘spirit’ we look for in this dish. Not enough of that smoky/wok-ness like other places that make this dish successfully.
Not sure if we’ll be eating here again - esp for dimsum. We weren’t all that satisfied with our food =/

asdklasjdlsks maximum late trip update post bc i completely forgot about it in my drafts. 💀 i was too occupied with grinding mapes events for cosmetic items aha.
better late than never i guess??
anyway, here's my long-awaited post about my short 5D4N trip in taiwan with luwi and shoron!! i decided to condense all five days into one post this time bc i didn't take a lot of good pics. :/
DAY 1: TAIPEI
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
nanjichang night market (南機場夜市) - highly recommended!!!
sumikko gurashi themed 7-ELEVEN (角落小夥伴主題商店)
first thing we did when we landed was to run to a 7-ELEVEN to grab a small bite. i got a strawberry cream sandwich with a mixed fruit/vegetable juice and the sandwich was so tasty... nothing special but so homely. we also picked up an easycard so that we could ride the mrt and omg the designs were all so cute?? why can't we have cute transport passes in sg too!!
after checking into our hostel, we went to nanjichang night market for dinner. i was told that this was the night market that locals would go to, and to avoid shilin night market bc it was more of a tourist attraction/trap?? no regrets tho. the food was great and so affordable. i got deep fried squid (coated with some kind of peppery and salty seasoning powder and spoilers: pretty sure all the fried stuff i ate in taiwan had the same seasoning LOL), shrimp dumplings, and a fermented vegetable baked pepper bun. waaa,, even though i ordered a shrimp dumpling, there was meat in it!! and i cannot handle the taste of meat in taiwan. it's too strong...
i also got an osmanthus tea from one of the bbt stalls there and it was the best bbt i had in taiwan?? unfortunately i didn't catch the name of the stall but there was a catto sitting on the counter!!
ended our day with a trip to the sumikko gurashi 7-ELEVEN. the decor was so cute!! i was hoping there'd be some exclusive merch being sold but there weren't any. idk why but i was determined to find some merch and i kept going into every 7-ELEVEN that was in my sights LMAO spoilers i didn't find any exclusive merch in the end. disappoint :-(
thoughts about the accommodation:
we stayed at the beimen wow poshtel for most of the days. it was reasonably close to the taipei main station and super affordable (~$20 per night) but idk it was giving me major School Camp flashbacks. we got the top bunks so every time we forgot something on the bed, we had to climb up the ladder to get it. it was inconvenient and i found out that i'm terrible at going down ladders bc i just jump off from the highest rung of the ladder and i gave myself quite a few bruises from that.
the rooms were also very tiny. we couldn't all have our luggages open at the same time so we'd go down to the communal area in the basement every day just to move things around. i wouldn't say that this was a massive con bc we got used to this arrangement rly fast. the real bAD THING is that we can't leave our things lying around in the room without locking them up in the lockers (also very smol). i have to clean and dry all my toiletries every day before i go to bed and before i leave. one time i accidentally left my clean clothes bag out and i woke up to find a single dirty sock inside. >:/
but other than that it felt pretty safe?? and i did enjoy our nightly hangouts at the communal area for supper or to plan our next-day activities.
would like to try out a capsule hotel next time tho. like one of those space pod thingies.
.
.
.
DAY 2: SHIFEN AND JIUFEN
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
shifen old streets
shifen waterfall
jiufen old streets
zhang ji traditional fishballs
a gan yi taro ball - it's nice but nothing special?? if the queue is too long then don't bother with it
jioufen teahouse - the queue for the famous a-mei teahouse was insane so we decided to try another teahouse
we spent the second day at shifen and jiufen!! took a train to shifen in the morning. walked along the streets and got some street food for lunch. i got brown sugar mochi paw-shaped pancake pops from a stall and i personally wouldn't recommend that flavour bc it was so dry. we also ate some taiwanese-style takoyaki. i watched luwi and shoron make their sky lantern (i couldn't do it bc it's ghost month and my mum said no :/) and release it into the sky. luwi added some good wishes for chi. stay 白 uwu
after walking around for a bit, we ran out of things to do and still had plenty of time to spare so we decided to rent electric scooters to see the shifen waterfall. i was shooketh that they didn't require any license?? and the shop didn't provide any helmets or safety gear?? so sus... i didn't dare to ride one of my own so i pillion'ed behind luwi.
the waterfall was a distance away from the parking lot and so the rest of our journey had to be on foot. i was sweating so much and thought i was gonna hallucinate from the heat and strong sun rays. somehow we made it to the viewing deck. i was expecting to be a lot closer to the waterfall but eh the view was pretty nonetheless. got chi and cha out so they could take in the sights too!!
we went through another round of suffering to get back to the parking lot and i, after seeing shoron ride the scooter so breezily on the way there from the old streets, decided to try riding one for the funsies. despite having barely any bicycle experience. as you would expect, that was Not A Good Idea bc i didn't even move 3 metres when i lost control, panicked, revved the accelerator thinking it was the brake (both were on the handles so idk i'm not a driver), went up the curb and fell over. ok but i fell off on purpose bc i thought the scooter was moving on its own (and not bc i mixed up the brake and accelerator) and my only way of survival was to just get off the bike before i crash into something or something crashed into me. surprisingly the only injuries i sustained were some bruises on my upper thigh that i landed on, and pinpoint scratches on my hand that i got from breaking my fall. i was very lucky that nothing was broken or bleeding. well, that was An Experience...... that i wouldn't want to go through again. anyway i'm banned from driving after this~~~
↓ btw this photo was taken moments before the disaster. apparently a lot of foreigners who rented scooters there also crashed their bikes. now that i look at it, our scooter had a chunk of it broken off at the front. ummm,,, what is safety
Tumblr media
our next stop was jiufen!! jiufen was sooo scenic and beautiful with all the lanterns and slopes but climbing up and down all those narrow and steep stairs just to get to the main street was just deaTH. 💀 i have no idea how the elderly can do it.
had an early dinner at the zhang ji traditional fishballs. got a mixed fishballs noodle soup and it was so tasty!! i actually like the handmade fishballs with meat inside. they were sweet.
when it got dark, we visited one of the teahouses there to have a tea experience. the staff taught us how to brew the tea and we did the rest ourselves after that. it was fun!! we also ordered an oolong tea cheesecake to share and it was definitely more cheesecake than oolong but i'm not complaining.
we stayed at the jiufen kite museum for a night and i was so glad to finally have a room to ourselves. it was a good thing we didn't bring our luggages with us bc there were no elevators there!! it was all just stairs.
.
.
.
DAY 3: JIUFEN AND BACK TO TAIPEI
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
jioufen breakfast restaurant
D+AF女鞋 南西旗艦店 - super nice and trendy shoes!!
kura sushi
ximending
the nighttime view in jiufen was amazing with all the lanterns lit up but bc it was so crowded and you absolutely could not get a shot without someone blocking the view, we decided to come back the next day at 6 am just to take pics. and also to eat a traditional taiwanese breakfast!! i love the soy milk and youtiao combination. 💕
when we were back at the taipei main station, i chanced upon this bakery (semeur 聖娜) that was holding a kanahei's small animals collab?? if you spend a certain amount, you can buy merch at a cheaper price. so ofc i picked out four breads just so i could get a cute cooler bag with usagi and piske on it~ kinda regretted not getting the handheld fan too. it would've been so useful bc it was sO HOT. btw i ended up bringing one bread back to singapore (take note of this info for later) bc i couldn't finish all of them LMAO. the breads were all tasty but i particularly liked the melon bun.
day 3 was our Buy The Things We Have To Buy day. luwi went to check out a motorcycle gear shop by herself while shoron and i explored the zhongshan area. i got the $370 wall clock that my colleague rly wanted from a department store there. we also went to this shoe shop that shoron wanted to check out and like,, i wasn't planning on buying any shoes but man,,, they were all so nice. you can call them clown shoes for all you like but i just rly like the wide, squarish toe box designs. i only bought a pair in the end but aaa i would've liked to get more if i didn't have space/weight concerns.
bought osmanthus oolong tea from yi pin tea (一品茶苑) and it was mid. very strong tea flavour tho.
we had kura sushi for lunch and it was amazing. the gacha system was fun and the food was great and i got to eat my beloved taiyaki for dessert. it was cheaper than any sushi place in sg too.
my stomach was acting up when we went to ximending in the evening so i didn't get anything to eat or drink there but i did try a bit of the vermicelli noodles from ay-chung flour-rice noodle and it was pretty good. peppery and kinda tastes like shark fin soup. aside from food, we didn't rly check out any of the shops there. i did go to a stationary store on my own and it was a feast for the eyes!!
.
.
.
DAY 4:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
wei chuan pushin ranch - there were capybaras and alpacas!! first time seeing them in person
mazesoba restaurant (東京油組總本店 台北華山組)
1789 café pâtisserie
zhongxiao dunhua shopping district (Air Space, Le Gusta, The Ladywore)
kanahei's small animals themed 7-ELEVEN (卡娜赫拉主題商店)
li yuan dumpling restaurant
braved the scorching heat for the alpacas and sheep and capybaras!! i touched an alpaca and a capybara for the first time and i can confirm that the former was floofy like a cloud while the latter felt like bristles of a broom.
the pig race and sheep race were being held when we were there so we got to watch. the ones that i bet on didn't win.
bc the ranch was located in a more rural part of taipei and buses were infrequent, we only had two?? hours to look around. so we rented some kind of a buggy. shoron was the designated driver for this bUT i felt like i could drive it too cuz it was kinda slow yknow.
for lunch we had mazesoba!! super good but could do with less salt.
afterwards we went on a hunt for a cafe to chill at bc it was raining so hard. had to give matcha one a miss bc we didn't have a reservation and there were no tables for us (except the VIP rooms which were $$$). eventually we found this cafe called 1789 café pâtisserie that was relatively empty and hid there until the rain subsided. we shared two eclairs (salted caramel and mango passionfruit) and a raspberry rose st. honore (crispy mille feuille pastry topped with whipped cream and raspberry jam??). they gave us two macarons on the house, and one of them was wasabi-flavoured. the taste was... interesting.
when the rain stopped, we went to shop for clothes around the zhongxiao dunhua shopping district. there were a lot of blogshop-like clothing stores in that area. i got clothes from le gusta and the ladywore~
our last dinner was at a xiaolongbao restaurant. i was glad that they had prawn xiaolongbaos!! that didn't have surprise meat in them. they were not bad. also got a custard panda bun for dessert~

DAY 5:
luwi and shoron went out to dabao breakfast at yong he soy milk (永和豆漿) in ximending while i continued to laze around in bed~~~ they brought soy milk and youtiao back for me!! i miss the combination. the youtiao from yong he was so light and airy on the inside and so crisp on the outside aaaa the doughy and oily ones in sg can't compare.
after breakfast we packed up and left for the airport. i wanted to try the oden at 7-ELEVEN before i leave but we couldn't find one at the departure hall. maximum sadge. in the end, we settled for a fast-food chicken place after we checked in and i got a yoghurt green tea (which tasted like yakult btw) and sweet potato fries.
i wanted to be productive on the flight back home (and i wasn't rly that sleepy anyway) so i played 999 on my 3ds and watched a 2-hour movie. finally watched maquia and it made me cry lmao. tearjerkers are the best kinds of movies for a flight imo!!
oh oh i sat next to an elderly couple on the plane and they were so nice and friendly. the lady kept checking to see if i needed to use the toilet bc i got the window seat. 🥺 we also chatted a bit while waiting to get off the plane.
we were planning to have dinner at mos burg after we landed in sg but there was a luggage delay and by the time we all got our luggages, it was almost time for mos burg to close. aha but fortunately i still had one bread left. so that was my dinner, along with the milo and oreos that the staffs were handing out to apologise for the delay.

Here are some results of several days' attempts at fishing.  Most of the fish I ever saw before were already dipped in batter and deep-fried, which is probably why I tended to think of them as pretty boring animals.  I stand corrected.
Tumblr media
Vandebeek and Ireland were particularly interested, because both of them used to sport fish as a hobby.  They were keen to point out how these creatures are adapted for living in a river full of silt where you can't see anything.  The fish with the giant mouth can suck things into it from a few centimetres away.  The one with the face tentacles can use them to keep track of what's going on in the water around it.  The giant arms allow the tiny crab to feel around for things.
Reynolds, who is currently sitting with his hand in a bucket of ice and also on a precautionary dose of epinephrine because Boonmee pointed out we don't know if he's having a toxic reaction or an allergic one, wanted to call the big-mouthed one the Fucking Bastardfish.  We managed to talk him down to Brindled Bastardfish but he would not budge on the 'bastard' part.  Possibly to show him up, Vandebeek named the face tentacle one Cthulhops hudsonensis.  The little crab thing we're calling a Crimp Shrimp but nobody will own up to coining it.
Tumblr media
The big fellow we found not by catching it in our net but by stepping on it as it hid in the riverbed mud.  When we brought it up for a better look we discovered its horrible mouth that shoots straight up to eat anything that tries to nibble on the dark tips of its face tentacles.  I took my turn to name something and called it a Hapsburg Flatboi in honour of its underbite.
We have also the fat little guy in the lower right, who has decided that the best way to keep from being predated upon is to be covered with shark teeth.  It's hide is incredibly tough and if you rub it the wrong way you'll lose the skin off your fingertips.  The only way we could get into it was down a sort of seam between scales in the side, which Vandebeek says is a sensory organ called the lateral line, and even then it dulled his knife.  We figured anything that works that hard to protect its innards must be delicious and we were right.  It's pink, meaty, and a bit greasy like trout, where most of the other fish just tasted kind of muddy.  Wang named it the Fishko Ball, because it's round and covered with silver facets.
Then there's this goddamn thing:
Tumblr media
Ireland thinks these guys are examples of 'decarcinization', which is when crabs evolve to look not like crabs.  It is the opposite of 'carcinization', which is when things that are not crabs evolve to look like crabs.  I guess this is common enough that we needed a word for it?  Boonmee is making curry out of it and several others are eager for a taste, but I must decline on the grounds that whatever it is, it is definitely shellfish, and I don't want hives today.
We have named the big one a Long Crab, while the little dudes are Razor Crabs, because they're thin rather than because they're sharp.  Although they are also sharp.
Ireland wants me to note that not all crustaceans are crabs.  However, by her own admission they all either used to be crabs or will someday become crabs, so I stand by my terminology.

Favorite type of cheap Chinese food?
Avlaroess doesn't usually indulge in cheap Chinese food; he'd much rather get the expensive, high quality stuff, if he can. In a pinch though, classic chicken fried rice really hits the spot.
Jude avoids the cheap stuff whenever she can, mostly because it tends to be greasy. If she can be convinced to get any though, she'll probably only grab an order of wonton soup or pork chow mein.
Tsuragi is likely to get a meal for three and ration it throughout the week. Wonton soup, chicken fried rice, sweet and sour chicken balls, deep fried shrimp and egg rolls, and they won't share with anyone.
Aquarios likes the shrimp - any kind of shrimp. Deep fried in batter, shrimp fried rice, shrimp lo mein... If it has shrimp, he'll be happy.
Jade always gets the same thing: General Tao chicken, beef lo mein, pork wonton soup and an egg roll. And he generally doesn't have leftovers.
For Violet, everything. His favourite kind of cheap Chinese food is an all-you-can-eat buffet. He takes a little bit of everything and has to go up several times because they just don't make the plates big enough.
Sans generally isn't that picky about Chinese food. But please know that whatever you get, he'll make into a pun somehow.

My August 2022 box from Sakuraco (and it came just in time for my birthday, arrived yesterday and my b-day is today 🥳) and the theme is Okinawa Retreat.
Okinawa (or Ryukyu Kingdom) is known for black and brown sugar, goya (bitter melon), snow salt (the texture is more powdery when compared to other salts), purple sweet potato, and fruits like shikuwasa which is a very sour, citrus fruit.  Most of the snacks/sweets in this box are black sugar, brown sugar and shikuwasa flavored.
So far we tried to the サーターアンダーギー (Sata Andagi) which are deep fried balls of dough that’s similar to donut (or donut holes) and they’re good, can’t wait to try the rest like the くるみかじり (kurumi kajiri, kurumi means walnut, kajiri means cookie) and the packing is so cute! There’s also a tea called sanpincha, which is a blend of Chinese and Japanese semi-fermented tea leaves with jasmine leaves and apparently it’s more popular than oolong and green tea in Okinawa.
The only thing I was disappointed about was the fact that there are 2 snacks I can’t eat (I’m vegetarian, one is a popular Okinawan cookie but it’s made with lard and the other is a shrimp flavor cracker) and the fact that some of these items aren’t from Okinawa like...”Tokyo Bread” (but not actually from Tokyo but Toyama Prefecture)?? But oh well, it’s a minor inconvenience since most of the items I can eat and most are from Okinawa.

Eating Our Way Through Sicily
Italian food in general is very good. But Sicily is especially famous for its cuisine. We jumped in with two feet.
Tumblr media
At Savia in Catania we tasted the arancini for which they are famous. Arancini are fist sized balls of rice, filled,in this case with meat ragú, breaded and deep fried. It is something I would never eat normally, but we are in Sicily!! Delicious.
Tumblr media
Savia is also the go-to pasticceria for Sicily’s famous cannoli. So, we had to try those as well. Then we needed a long walk.
Tumblr media
At Sikulo, I tried paccheri with swordfish, eggplant and mint….
Tumblr media
…while Paul had the classic, spaghetti with clams.
Tumblr media
The Catania district grows most of the pistachios for which Sicily is famous. So, pistacchio cake was a must try.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lunch in Siracusa was sandwiches: shrimp meatballs turned out to be more like shrimp croquettes which were great. The fried calamari sandwich is a classic. Both tasted even better because we were sitting outside, steps away from the Mediterranean.
Tumblr media
An appetizer of periwinkles (I think that is what they were) sautéed in olive oil and garlic.
Tumblr media
Gnocchi A La Pescadora at Sicilia in Bocca in Catania was as delicious as it looks.
Tumblr media
Pistachio pasta… who knew it was a thing!!!
