💥New Role💥
Matthew Goode is credited in IMDB as having a role in monster horror film Abigail, due for release in April this year. I assume Matthew filmed this in May while in Ireland shooting Freud’s Last Session. His exact role is not specified in IMDB credits but it is likely to be small.
Plot: After a group of criminals kidnap the ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, they retreat to an isolated mansion, unaware that they're locked inside with no normal little girl.
The film is based on a reimagining of the 1936 Universal Classic Monsters film Dracula's Daughter.
Directors: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Writers: Stephen Shields and Guy Busick
Other cast members: Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, William Catlett, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, Alisha Weir, and Giancarlo Esposito.
World premiere: Overlook Film Festival on 7 April.

Dan Stevens in an exclusive interview (Google translated)
Hollywood star Dan Stevens can currently be seen in the blockbuster “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” in cinemas. The film is currently topping the box office charts and is number one worldwide. We met the charismatic actor in Los Angeles and talked to him about his current film, his next two projects and his choice of roles.
April 5, 2024 by Grace Maier
Can you share with us your first reaction when you were offered a role in Godzilla x Kong: The new empire? It's always a pleasure to work with the same people several times, but this time it was extra special as Adam Wingard, the director, is an old friend. I was also invited to play with an even older friend, Rebecca Hall, as well as Brian Tyree Henry, who I have known and admired for years. It felt like I was being asked to play with friends.
What was it like entering the universe of these iconic monsters? Did you have any ideas or expectations? It's a fun task to be asked to stretch one's imagination to the size of such cinematic titans! I've worked with CGI on an epic scale before, so it wasn't too foreign, and I was surprised at how many practical locations we had.
How did you prepare for your role in this blockbuster? Were there any unique challenges or exciting moments during filming? It was really exciting to shoot in the Australian outback, in the Daintree rainforest - this incredible ancient jungle. That sense of adventure on the way to work every day, passing crocodiles along the river banks, waiting for pythons to be removed from the set, really fueled the mood for the Hollow Earth walk in the film.
“Godzilla x Kong: The new empire” promises to be an epic clash. Without giving too much away, can you give us a hint as to how your character fits into the plot? Trapper is initially brought in to help Kong with his toothache - he is a vet for all Titan creatures - and is then approached by Rebecca Hall's character, Dr. Andrews, invited to the mission. He's a kind of happy, carefree Han Solo type, good to have around, tirelessly optimistic and impressed by little.
The film contains a lot of CGI and visual effects. What was your experience like acting in such an environment and how did it differ from previous roles? I've worked with this type of thing before so it wasn't too scary. I actually really enjoy working with a VFX team and helping to create something using our entire collective imagination. It's truly incredible to see what they achieve long after you've left the process.
Were you a fan of the Godzilla or Kong films before joining this project? How does it feel to be part of their legacy? I feel like I've known these characters my whole life: they are such an integral part of cinema history. I've loved seeing them in all their different iterations over the years and of course being asked to perform alongside them - and even fix their teeth - is a huge honor!
The film will have some intense action scenes. Can you describe one of your most memorable moments while filming these scenes? While it's not the most intense scene, the way my character is introduced - rappelling from a floating vehicle into Kong's mouth to perform large-scale dental work - was one of the more exciting stunts I had to do!
How do you think fans of the franchise will react to Godzilla x Kong: The new empire? What can they look forward to most? I want them to enjoy the ride! You'll see things you've never seen before and meet some fantastic new creatures and characters, but also maybe some familiar fan favorites...
You also have the film "ABIGAIL" coming out in April. Can you tell us a little about filming and what audiences can expect? This is a completely different kind of thrill! Essentially, it's a vampire ballerina heist movie - you know the kind - directed by the Radio Silence guys, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who specialize in a particularly wacky brand of horror-comedy that I love .
“CUCKOO” will also be released in the summer. What particularly interested you about this film? Tilman Singer, the director, is a truly exciting new voice in cinema - he has a very distinctive style that is so captivating and artfully disturbing. I was also very curious to work with Hunter Schafer, the lead actress of Cuckoo, who is such a bright and brilliant artistic soul.
Your career is so dynamic. How do you go about choosing a role? I crave variety, challenge and surprise, so I'm often guided by the search for those things, but it can also be a certain quality in the writing, a desire to work with certain directors or actors. It's different every time!

BEWARE! SPOILERS HERE!
"I don't think that we can imagine anybody but Matthew in that role now that he's done it," co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin explained to EW. "It was just a spectacular day of filming with him. He really gave it to us."
"The thing that we really loved about Matthew is that he doesn't present as this brute, that there's something really ethereal and graceful about him that is weirdly scarier," director Tyler Gillett added. "If you see this character who feels like they're not of this planet to a certain extent, there's something so scary about a character like that who has the power that everyone knows he has in the world of our story."
Sooo, does this mean that Matthew might be in consideration for a sequel? Very interesting thought!!

“Abigail”
I saw Abigail last night at an early screening. I enjoyed it, it’s a bloody good romp of a vampire movie. Alisha Weir plays the ballerina vampire. She’s 14 but looks maybe 10 or 11. (By the way, Weir was also excellent in 2022’s movie musical Matilda.)
The premise is that 6 criminals are hired to kidnap a young girl and hold her for 24 hours until they are paid $50M in ransom from her mega rich father. But will any of them survive to collect their payday?
The two main bad guys are played by Dan Brown and Melissa Barrera. Of course Brown is best known for playing prime and proper Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey. He’s fun here as a former cop gone bad. (Is he using a Queens New York accent?)
Barrera has been in the news lately for being fired from the cast of the next Scream movie. (Barrera spoke out against the treatment of the Palestinians in Gaza which wasn’t considered Kosher by the powers that be in Hollywood.) Besides Weir, she’s clearly the focus of the movie and I think she’s good.
The plot pretty much involves: Act 1: the kidnapping and introduction of the characters; Act 2: they discover who/what Abigail really is and try to back out of the deal; Act 3: Lots of blood and mayhem - the movie is Rated R for a reason.
At some point I was reminded of Agatha Christie’s Ten Little Indians. That was deliberate because later that book is a minor plot point.
Overall I think it’s well paced but towards the end there’s a little too much Monologging. But it quickly gets back to the explosive climax that directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin Tyler Gillett are known for. (If you saw their 2022 film Ready or Not you’ll known what I mean.)
Abigail is not for the squeamish but if you enjoy vampire movies, check it out.

What it's about: "A group of would-be criminals kidnaps the 12-year-old daughter of a powerful underworld figure. Holding her for ransom in an isolated mansion, their plan starts to unravel when they discover their young captive is actually a bloodthirsty vampire." via Google
Why it's special: I was honestly hesitant to watch this because I was worried I would be in for another M3GAN situation. Not that I hate M3GAN as a concept, but I felt that the execution was poor. Little kid villains can sometimes feel cheesy to me. Which it still does here, but the difference is that this movie knows exactly how unserious it is.
The entire cast was great in this. It was funny and extremely lively. It's a fun, schlocky ride. Plenty of gore to go around.
I liked how the beginning felt like a heist movie and that it morphs into a survival film. The stakes (get it?) are high but it's not a stressful watch by any means. I'd definitely add it to my vampire movie list. Recommended.

𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 - This is Halloween~
Tumblr media
This is Halloween~ Pumpkins scream in the dead of night~.
It's that time of the year again! Isn't it just OH, so exciting! If you've been here a while, you might know how much I LOVE holidays ♡ And Halloween, of course, holds a special place in my heart. Wouldn't be able to tell you why, but it's always with great joy that I spend october, and especially the last week, preparing, decorating, and celebrating ~.
Same as last year, to get in the mood this week before the day comes, I've prepared a small list with movies to watch! Some were added to the ranking last time, classics that simply can't be left out–. And some, well, are just here to enjoy and have fun with friends at night (*^ω^)
With nothing else to say, I hope you enjoy this year's selection!

Title: Scream franchise (1996-2023) - Director: Wes Craven, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, Christopher Landon
It is not a Halloween movie night if there's not at least ONE Scream movie in there. That's it. That's everything there is to say. Ah, how do you even explain this franchise? To this day, it remains a must watch for any and all horror lovers. There is no further discussion about it. I'm taking the holiday as an excuse! Still need to watch the new drop. So do the same, and if you haven't watched them all, make yourself a favor and sit through them tonight!

Title: The Evil Dead franchise (1981-2023) - Director: Sam Raimi, Federico Alvarez, Lee Cronin
It's the hand. It will ALWAYS be the hand. Picture this, you're watching a terribly gore-y, comical horror movie. You can't get past the 1st person POV of the evil spirit sprinting through the woods, trying to take the movie seriously as it's so old. And then, to top it off, a possessed hand wants to end its former owner's life. That's all you need to know to understand why this is here. A comic, a computer game, a movie, a tv show, and a musical. That's the cultural impact of The Evil Dead!

Title: Paranormal Activity (2006) - Director: Oren Peli.
Lets be honest for once. There's only one good Paranormal Activity movie, and that's simply the first one. Maybe it was the fear it induced, the novelty of the idea and the filmmaking, or simply the fact it made it seem like such an ordinary occurrence, like it could happen to you at any time. But it is, undoubtedly, an axiety inducing, terrifying movie. And I am more than convinced it deserves a little spot in todays list.

Did I pick your favorite movie, or did I miss it? It's always so hard picking so little movies to share and have fun with for these dates! Never know if I want to keep the list old school, modern, psychological, or bloody! Regardless, this is the list I'm going with myself! A bit of everything, I reckon, and I know I'll enjoy it.
If you have your own horror list for the week, what do you have in it? And if you don't like horrors, what do you watch for Halloween? (^w^)
Can't wait for next week to come already! Still have so much to share the next few days, though. I'm super excited, and I hope you are too!
I'll go now, or I'll fall behind on my other plans! But I'll be back tomorrow with more, so don't miss me much! All the love, my little pumpkins~.
Stay safe out there! -Yura ♡

One ticket for… ABIGAIL (2024)
Directed by. Matt-Bettinelli Olpin, Tyler Gillett
Written by. Guy Busick, Stephen Shields
Starring. Melissa Barrera, Alisha Weir, Dan Stevens, Giancarlo Esposito
Production Design by. Susie Cullen
I really like Radio Silence's work. Ready or Not (2019) was an instant classic and I couldn't see anyone else (other than Wes Craven) revitalizing the Scream franchise like they did. Now, I felt that Abigail would not be my thing after watching the trailer. That's okay! I still want to support the filmmakers and an original horror film. Also, vampires are cool as fuck. So I gave Abigail a shot!
I don't hate Abigail, nor dislike it, the film just didn't leave an impression on me. Again, that's okay! This is a good time to mention the philosophy behind this blog: you can find at least find one thing you like in every movie. I'll never review a movie I 100% hate, it's just not what I do. I love movies. I want people to go to the theatre! So, as always I'll focus on what I did love, even if it wasn't the film entirely.
The supporting cast was perfect. I enjoyed Kathryn Newton, Kevin Durand, and William Catlett way more than I thought I would. They were all hilarious, never missing a beat. Alisha Weir was a surprise! I find the "evil kid" stereotype can be hit or miss (mainly due to the writing, not the kid actors. I'll never blame the kids), but Weir brought a lot to this role. Especially to her scenes with Melissa Barrera. The two had a great, natural dynamic.
My absolute favorite part of this film was the production design by Susie Cullen. Radio Silence sure knows how to film a mansions. Or, their Director of Photography, Aaron Morton knows how to. Though, Morton did not work on Ready or Not, which also has a beautifully shot mansion. The mansion in Abigail feels like a maze- you're just as lost as the characters. I noticed that the windows, gates, doors, etc. were styled to look like teeth and open jaws, turning the mansion itself into a monster. The family crest (a dragon with it's tail wrapped around itself) was surely a direct reference to Count Dracula's crest from Bram Stoker's novel. The efforts of the design team clearly payed off.
If you love a blood-fest, this film is for you. The amount of splatter and gore is astonishing and I am here for it! Did you like the shocking yet iconic ending of Ready or Not? Than you'll have a blast with this! Literally. Radio Silence doesn't hold back, in fact they have stepped up their game, in Abigail.
A lot of people will like Abigail and I can see why. It is well acted, beautifully shot, and bloody as hell. There is a lot of fun to be had and honestly- it's just great to support the team behind this film (especially Melissa Barrera and Radio Silence). Go see Abigail this weekend, I'm curious to hear what you think!

ABIGAIL - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Universal Pictures
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: A group of low-level criminals are brought together to pull off a caper - kidnap and babysit overnight the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, the pay-off is a $50 million ransom. The hideout is an old isolated mansion. They try to settle in for the night but the rules go by the wayside as, one by one, the gangsters grisly and mysteriously meet their demise. The gloves come off and when they confront their prisoner, to their mounting horror, they discover that they’re the prisoners and are locked inside the mansion with no normal little girl.
REVIEW: Occasionally, screenwriters attempt to breathe new life into the vampire mythos by blending genres into their screenplays. While many of these scripts start off with a great promise, the final product often falls short of expectations. However, there are a few notable exceptions that have managed to capture the essence of the vampire genre. Examples include "The Lost Boys," "Innocent Blood," "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," and "Vampires," the last two based on novels.
In Stephen Shields and Guy Busick's screenplay for ABIGAIL, elements of O. Henry's classic short story "The Ransom of Red Chief" and the 1990's film "Home Alone" converge, driven by the urban legend of Abigail's gangster father and tales inclusion of vampire mythology. The screenwriters incorporate subtle nods to Agatha Christie, creating humorous moments in the film. They skillfully weave in references to numerous films and TV shows, including "Reservoir Dogs," "Innocent Blood," and Kevin Durand's involvement in the vampire series "The Strain." The narrative is multi-layered, as the writers creatively rework the vampire myth to suit their story. What truly captivates the audience is Abigail's character arc and the motivations behind her actions. At its core, the story delves into a child's yearning for parental attention or the lack thereof, intertwined with the guilt experienced by parents. This complex exploration of parenting, children, and vampires sets ABIGAIL apart as a refreshing take on these themes since "The Lost Boys."
Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett masterfully orchestrate a symphony of tension, action, and shocks that ebbs and flows like an adrenaline-fueled thrill ride. Their ability to consistently surprise and engage the viewer stems from their skillful framing and editing of sequences, coupled with the captivating performance of actress Alisha Weir, who portrayed Matilda in the 2022 adaptation of the musical. Her portrayal is simply outstanding here.
The mansion in which the characters are hiding serves as an integral character in the film. The production design is remarkable, creating a subtle yet tangible atmosphere. While there were a few scenes in the third act that raised questions about potential escape routes, my engrossment in the film at that point prevented me from giving them much thought.
The combination of practical and digital effects in the movie created some truly impressive "wow" moments, especially in the fight sequences. The dental design and contact lenses used for the vampire look were particularly well done. My favorite scenes were the visual sequences showing the destruction of the vampires—a real treat for die-hard horror fans.
The film's musical foundation is a harmonious blend of classical melodies and a gripping score composed by Brian Tyler. Tyler, a renowned composer with a rich portfolio of screen and television scores, has masterfully created musical movements that seamlessly intertwine with the classical selections, escalating the film's action and horror. In other moments, his score complements the actors' performances and heightens the suspense and tension of the scenes, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
The film features a talented cast with extensive horror experience. Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kevin Durand, Kathryn Newton, and William Catlett have each starred in multiple horror films, bringing their expertise to the project. The cast also includes Matthew Goode and Giancarlo Esposito, who add their unique talents to their characters, enhancing the film's energy. This exceptional ensemble cast delivers a thrilling viewing experience, creating captivating characters that engage and entertain the audience.
ABIGAIL offers a "fangtastic" combination of a caper story and a vampire tale. It's one of the best horror-thrill rides I've experienced in theaters this year. In fact, I haven't had this much fun with a horror movie since "The Lost Boys" or "Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn." Not since Macaulay Culkin faced off against bumbling heist men has a kid's involvement in an action film been so entertaining. Yes, it's a bloody film, but families with tweens should venture to their local cinema for a killer good time.
