this is so niche but like. i just finished part 3 of disenchantment and need to spitball a total drama au even though the show isnt done yet. spoilers and rambling below the cut.

okay so like gwen is bean. like she just gives me bean vibes i honestly cant see her being any other character. 

i think noah is luci though alejandro is a strong contender noah just seems more luci yknow? 

elfo I think could go in two directions. we could go the typical route and have cody be elfo bc he simps for gwen and all that but i think changing elfo’s personality/role in this au could allow courtney to be elfo. 

like elves are more stereotypically snooty and classy in this au and have strict rules and courtney very much sticks to the rules but maybe lady elves or just elves in general aren’t allowed to be as aggressive and driven as she is so she leaves them to carve a path for herself. 

so shes not as much of a pushover asl elfo but she’s very much a stickler for the rules and has a bit of a holier than thou attitude and is a bit stuck up

maybe shes also a princess and never mentions it because she leaves her throne behind and doesnt want to be bound to princess duties that get in the way of her doing what she wants to do yknow? and thats something she can hide from gwen but as time goes on and the elves come to dreamland (which should be called wawanakwa) gwen learns more about courtney’s princess past and they bond over it. 

if we go the route with courtney then mora doesnt really exist in this au bc im gwourtney trash and that aint changing anytime soon. 

but it takes a while for gwen and courtney to like each other. courtney and noah also clash but noah and gwen get along pretty well. 

also noah looks like his usual self but can turn into pretty much what luci looks like when he wants to because magic demon powers and bc I love luci’s appearance so much (girl help i have gender envy for a fucking cartoon demon)

as for zog, derek, and oona, we’re gonna change them into sibling roles. lets say gwen’s dad, the king, had a lot of queens who all died after bearing him a child so gwen has a bunch of half siblings. and her dad is dead too. its the curse of zog or whatever it is in canon.

maybe cody could be derek (gwen does say he reminds her of an annoying little brother) and owen can be zog, and he rules with izzy as his queen, though it was an arranged marriage and izzy eventually divorces him to become a pirate queen like oona

and dagmar’s role can be gwen’s oldest sister, heather, who got turned to stone when gwen was younger and having only brothers and a crazy sister in law gwen idealizes heather as this great older sister despite barely remembering her. heather uses that to her advantage because she’s evil and once gwen finds that out they really dont get along (like dagmar and bean in canon)

owen is obsessed with the immortality pendant to bring his sister back to life after their drinks got switched not realizing that heather was trying to kill him so she could take the throne

i think chris should be odval bc he and bean have a hilarious dynamic that could totally be replicated with gwen and chris. and if chris has a gay wizard lover it HAS to be chef. chef is sorcerio

justin is merkimer. like really nobody else could be merkimer

trent is pendergast (my beloved) and turbish and mertz can be some hapless interns or maybe someone from a later cast, like spud and rock (that would actually be so funny spud can absolutely be turbish)

blaineley is the archdruidess of course

i dont know where alejandro fits in bc of course hes gonna be noah’s love interest but luci didn’t really have any love interests (except for kissy for a hot second but idc ab that) but i do think it would be funny if the usually unflappable demon noah suddenly has a crush on some handsome guy and is trying to hide it from his friends but hes terrible at it and gwen and courtney are teasing him 24/7 ab it. and noah is sad because alejandro would never want to date a demon if he knew what he really was but psych alejandro is a demon too. that’d be a great arc

and poor lindsay could be jerry! idk about becky and cloyd though… or the gunderson brothers… def need to know more about the last two before casting them

ok im crashing now but this is definitely gonna be something i revisit in the future. probably won’t post any fics until season 4 comes out so i know the full story before writing…

So, disenchantment season two its finally there, what do you think of that?

Controversial Opinion: the Electric Princess is the best episode. It's a breath of fresh air, and you can tell that Matt Groening has been WAITING for this moment to happen. This is why he made Disenchantment as the completion of his trilogy: the past contains far greater things than we ever could have imagined, and he is going full-force on this futurama-esque feminist steampunk utopia! Which makes it all the more jarring when she returns to Dreamland. It's the kind of jarring that makes for a really, REALLY strong moment of impact, when (spoilers) that gunshot rang out through Dreamland. Something so familiar to a modern audience, that just the sound itself triggers an instinctual terror - then the realization that the citizens of Dreamland don't know what that sound means - and the CONSEQUENCES of that moment - it's absolutely DEVASTATING in the BEST possible way.

I'm also really glad that Elfo is officially over Bean and they can have the deep, loving, affectionate friendship they deserve. Where else are you gonna find a male/female friendship that involves casual, platonic kisses on the mouth, and like, you KNOW they're platonic because nobody ever makes a big deal out of it??? The fact that Elfo is genuinely no longer interested in pursuing a romantic or sexual relationship with Bean is phenomenal and it really frees Elfo up for character development.

And speaking of Character Development, Luci??? Is amazing???? He's gone from the most selfish of the trio to the most selfless. He's sacrificed everything, and is letting himself indulge in becoming a genuinely good person. He's a productive member of his community, whose business endeavors mostly bring the different communities of Dreamland together. He owns an interracial bar that caters to the specific biological needs of all his patrons, he ran an emergency clinic during a public health crisis, he singlehandedly resolved an economic crisis, he's... Benevolent.

And I also genuinely think he's probably in love with Elfo at this point - he was going to drag Elfo back from Hell HIMSELF (remember how he didn't want Bean to come at first? YEAH. Really throws a wrench in that selfish betrayal narrative he spun up), he helped Elfo get over Bean and then helped them reconcile their friendship, he sacrificed everything for Elfo, specifically this season! Then helped Elfo's people prosper, even though he didn't need to do anything! And then he dated Kissy, which either A) shows that Luci is genuinely into badass elves or B) he was trying to make Elfo jealous so that Elfo would pay attention to him (which worked).

And we see Elfo and Luci growing closer than ever this season - they dance, they hug, they play, they fight, they reconcile, they buy an apartment together! And I'm not just happy about this because I've been shipping it since season 1, I'm happy about this because it shows Luci is letting himself fall in love. Not just for pleasure, but the genuine kind of love that you have to make sacrifices for.

And Bean's trial, when you realize that, yeah, holy shit, the accusation of Witchcraft is actually incredibly well-founded? Usually when there's a witch trial in media, you're like "all this evidence is complete baloney and can be easily explained away but the accuser is fearmongering for personal gain and it's frustrating," and it waa set up like that! But in THIS trial, the more details are revealed, the more you realize that the prosecution... actually has a point??? And you can SEE the CHARACTERS realize "oh holy shit there's a LOT of solid evidence to support this accusation" and it's SO GOOD???

And then, Bean gets to be freed because the Exicutioner knows her. He mentored her, is the husband of the woman who raised her, he's known this kid through stories and experience since she was just a little baby. And he knows she's a good person. And he's so sure about his actions, no hesitation, just the unconditional kindness of someone who cares about one of their kids. And the entire surgery scene was great, because it's the same kind of unconditional trust and love, but in reverse this time - a father who knows his daughter is gonna do the best she can.

This was a season about love and sacrifice. A king who finds his soulmate, and lets her go so she can be herself. A friend who lets go of heaven forever, so he can be with his friends again. A demon who gives up everything he has to save one of his best friends. A queen who does not love her daughter, because she refuses to sacrifice her own vision for her daughter's consent. An entire kingdom who sacrifices not just their blood, but their home and way of life, to rescue the fallen of their brother's new home. It's beautiful, it's exciting, it's clever, and it's genuine. And I'm excited to see how they go on from here! (... Although I do still rather desperately hope that Elfo and Luci get their apartment back.)

Derek is autistic. However, considering the time period, no one thinks there's really anything too 'off' about his behavior (well Bean does, but that's a different story) and a diagnosis is impossible.

Bean & Pendergast are only a couple of years apart in age, and have been friends since childhood. Pendergast has had a crush on her since he was a preteen, but it is not reciprocated.

As little kids, Pendergast loved playing pretend as a knight. However, it was always Bean rescuing him in all their little games.

Elfo is the youngest elf from Elfwood. Kissy's a year or two older than him.

Derek's nonbinary. He's not sure what to think of it though, and is unaware that there's a word for it. The only person he's told is Oona.

While he lived in hell, the higher ranking demons liked to pick on Luci.

Luci's very physically and metaphorically clingy to Bean & Elfo. His favorite places to sleep are on their shoulders or at their feet.

Luci realized how much he actually cared about the other two when they saved him from Big Jo.

Bean and Derek both have their doubts about it sometimes, but Zog would die for them.

Derek feeds the cats that live in his harpsichord. He also named them, one of them being named Daisy.

Odval & Sorcerio occasionally drink some fine wine together and talk about how much they hate Zog.

Bean was too oblivious to realize she was a lesbian on her own. She realized it one day when complaining to Luci & Elfo: "I don't even like guys that much. I just like flirting with them to mess with Dad. Who even decided that princesses have to find a man? If I could, I'd just end up marrying another lady." Luci paused for a few seconds before saying "Bean, have you seriously not considered the fact maybe you're gay?"

The Grunkwitz family is not straight. They just aren't.

Dankmirians naturally have long hair. They don't assign gender to hair styles and lengths. All around, they are a very androgynous species.

This one is self indulgent as hell, but I love imagining Leela as a very distant descendant of Bean.

I have watched Disenchantment and I gotta say I am adding this to a list of favorite adult animated shows.

Spoilers for those who haven’t seen it yet.

The characters

It’s been pretty been done before with the whole “rebellious princess that doesn’t want to be forced to marry for political reasons” story. This time though it’s being tackled with the adult animated comedy medium. Princess Tiabeanie “Bean” of Dreamland is an alcoholic trouble maker who makes it clear she won’t go through an arranged marriage. She’s presented as someone more flawed then the basic rebellious princess. She accidentally caused her first fiancée to impale himself and later tries to do away her second fiancée intentionally with a lethal bachelor party.

She’s not without reasons though considering they were both chosen for her and she rather not marry results of incest. Especially if the second one’s even worse what with him killing her kingdom’s allies after an insidious orgy with a pack of walruses. Lucky for her he got magically turned into a pig via mixed blood magic ala pig and elf. Even though she’s pretty spoiled she’s willing to rough it out and not mooch of her handmaiden’s family when her dad kicked her out. She has questionable judgment but does have a good heart.

Bean spared the candy witch’s life and even cleared her name and break the curse she was under when it turns out Hansel and Gretal were the ones to have eaten all those people. Thank goodness the witch’s sister survived that explosion and are now living in that candy condo complex together. Bean was also really sweet to that giant Tess girl. Even after finding out Elfo’s lie she was willing to help her. I hope she comes back next season along with that non-binary griffin.

Anyway I know Bean loves her mom Dagmar very much and is rather distant with her stepmom. It’s pretty clear she needs to see her mom for who she really is and that’s an evil person who turned the kingdom into stone. Interesting twist to make the (once) dead mom the evil one and the stepmother the good one. It’s usually the other way around in fairytales. I know Bean had her on that literal pedestal for so long but I do hope it doesn’t take her even longer to see the truth.

I hope Oona gets some love next season and she and Bean grow closer as mother and daughter. It’s pretty clear that she got the short end of the stick when she married Zog to end the war between their kingdoms. Even though she provided him with a male heir and does the whole “submissive wife” duty with no apparent complaints she’s not exactly everyone’s favorite queen. Her husband still longs for the dead wife he’s been trying for years to revive. Let’s not forget he pretty much plays favorites with his kids. Derek may be the one who inherits the throne but it’s Bean with all her drunken troublemaking that Zog shows the most attention and affection to.

The show itself

It’s pretty clear the writers have taken advantage of the whole online binge-watching format. Scenes that might have been cut makes it onto the episode. I get the feeling the whole “humble farmer couple” scene might have been the one to end up on the cutting room floor had it premiered on tv.

I do like the some of the music for the show and the fact that the theme song tells us in different scenes what the episode is gonna bring.

If there’s one thing I would have changed it’s cutting the first episode in half and add more to the seperate stories. They should have added more breathing rooms to the “Trio meets and escapes the royal wedding” and “journey to the wish/wash master” sagas.

Also that whole “will they or won’t they” trope for Bean and Elfo was unneeded and undeserved. Elfo has fallen for Bean way too quickly and the whole “Nice Guy” thing going on is not a good look for him. Even Futurama took they time to grow Fry’s affection for Leela. I don’t know if it’s part of his “seek out misery” journey through unrequited love or he’s trying to get over Kissy, the elf girl who stayed behind. They so need to resolve this by next season if and when they bring him magically back to life.

I do wonder how many seasons Matt Groening got planned considering he’s making Disenchantment into a serialized saga. I want to know what he’s got planned for the Secret Society that sent Bean her personal demon Luci as a wedding present. Elfo’s mysterious non-elf mom. Let’s not forget how Bean ties into all this considering her Kingdom’s not that grand and she’s got a lot of problems herself. Please renew the show Netflix! I want to know what’s next.
