Finally got the motivation to take part in The Durrell Challenge, despite having medical issues that make it near impossible for me to run, I decided to walk the 13k distance for charity that does great work

May I request some jealous Henry with lots of fluff, please? 🥹❤️
You got it, babe! I may have taken a bit of a liberty with this one. I got a thought in my head and had to get it out, so I'm sorry if it wasn't quite what you'd imagined, lol. Thanks for stopping by!
Warnings: a little bit of angsty homesickness, some raunchy banter, and plenty of fluff in the form of a cow/bear/pig
Tumblr media
"So...What are you wearing?"
"Henry!"
His laughter fills the room. Another night apart means another night alone in bed. Distance is always hard on a relationship, and though you've been through your share of time apart, it doesn't make it any easier this time around. At least it's just for a couple of weeks, while he's off running the press gauntlet for the newest season of The Witcher. It's bittersweet this time around. The last several months have been hard, watching him mourn the loss of a project he loved so much, and it sucks that you couldn't be there for him now. The plan was for him to go off and do everything abroad, then you'd meet back up and join him at the premiere in London. In the meantime though, all this waiting was driving you nuts.
The house is dark, except for the glow of the bedside lamp that illuminates the room that you're used to sharing with your man and his bear. Kal is used to tagging along for most adventures, and it's clear that he's a bit disappointed about having to stay behind as well. His ears perk up at the sound of his dad's voice, but doesn't bother to investigate further. He's far too comfy to move.
"Come on, love. Just a peek?"
Henry is a menace, and he knows what that does to you. With those beautiful eyes and that cheeky little grin, you could never tell him no. Throwing the blankets aside, you reach out to adjust the screen of your laptop to give him the perfect view of your sexiest fleece pajama bottoms.
"Hey!" he protests. "That's my shirt!"
"Yeah, and?
Even now, propped up in the bed of a hotel room a couple thousand miles away, Henry couldn't hide from you. The banter was just a facade, a distraction to keep you from seeing just how much he missed you. He thought he'd built a wall of stone to keep you from knowing, but in reality, it was just a pane of glass. One look and it shattered around him.
Henry sighs. He doesn't have to speak for you to know what he's feeling, because you feel it too. It's an odd sensation, feeling so homesick when you're still at home. You look down at the t-shirt you're wearing. The gray one he wore in the Durrell Challenge a few years back. Even though its been sitting in the back of the closet for a while, it still smells like him. That's why you picked it.
"What time is it there?" you ask, but it's clear by the look in his eyes just how tired he is. Must be getting pretty late, even for an insomniac gamer like him.
"Late. But I don't have anything planned for the morning, so don't worry."
You sit in silence for a moment, both of you laying on your sides facing each other just as you would if he were here with you now. When you open your mouth to speak, to finally admit just how much you miss him, you're cut short by a loud, rumbling snort from the foot of the bed. The culprit lets out a yawn ("Good yawn!") and a stretch ("Big stretch, bubba"), then works his way up the bed to nose at the keyboard a bit.
"Uh oh. We've woken the bear," you tease, rubbing the beast behind his ears as he circles the space he's made between you and the computer to rest in. Kal sniffs and sighs to voice his disappointment, then settles down again to snooze for a little while longer.
"Keeping Mumma company, I see," Henry smirks. "I might even let it slide that you've let him on the bed."
You shrug, grinning ear to ear as you ruffle Kal's mane. "When the wolf's away..."
That struck a nerve. Maybe it's the jetlag finally catching up to him, or maybe its the distance. You can see it in the shift in his eyes, the tense of his jaw. It makes you snort with laughter.
"Oh, come on, Cavill. Look at that face. You can't possibly be jealous of him. You'll get plenty of snuggles the moment you're home." Then you wink. "Snuggles, and then some."
The wrinkles on his brow disappear, and he realizes just how silly it is to be jealous of the dog. Better to be jealous of him than someone else, at least. Shaking his head, he laughs. What an idiot. Either way, it's good enough for now. Henry shifts to prop himself up on an elbow to look down at the screen. He's sure you'll make good on your promise. In the meantime...
"Now," he says with a grin. Good ole Henry, always back to business as per usual. "Care to flash me a tit?"

Advice/hard truths for writers?
The best piece of practical advice I know is a classic from Hemingway (qtd. here):
The most important thing I’ve learned about writing is never write too much at a time… Never pump yourself dry. Leave a little for the next day. The main thing is to know when to stop. Don’t wait till you’ve written yourself out. When you’re still going good and you come to an interesting place and you know what’s going to happen next, that’s the time to stop. Then leave it alone and don’t think about it; let your subconscious mind do the work.
Also, especially if you're young, you should read more than you write. If you're serious about writing, you'll want to write more than you read when you get old; you need, then, to lay the important books as your foundation early. I like this passage from Samuel R. Delany's "Some Advice for the Intermediate and Advanced Creative Writing Student" (collected in both Shorter Views and About Writing):
You need to read Balzac, Stendhal, Flaubert, and Zola; you need to read Austen, Thackeray, the Brontes, Dickens, George Eliot, and Hardy; you need to read Hawthorne, Melville, James, Woolf, Joyce, and Faulkner; you need to read Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Turgenev, Goncherov, Gogol, Bely, Khlebnikov, and Flaubert; you need to read Stephen Crane, Mark Twain, Edward Dahlberg, John Steinbeck, Jean Rhys, Glenway Wescott, John O'Hara, James Gould Cozzens, Angus Wilson, Patrick White, Alexander Trocchi, Iris Murdoch, Graham Greene, Evelyn Waugh, Anthony Powell, Vladimir Nabokov; you need to read Nella Larsen, Knut Hamsun, Edwin Demby, Saul Bellow, Lawrence Durrell, John Updike, John Barth, Philip Roth, Coleman Dowell, William Gaddis, William Gass, Marguerite Young, Thomas Pynchon, Paul West, Bertha Harris, Melvin Dixon, Daryll Pinckney, Darryl Ponicsan, and John Keene, Jr.; you need to read Thomas M. Disch, Joanna Russ, Richard Powers, Carroll Maso, Edmund White, Jayne Ann Phillips, Robert Gluck, and Julian Barnes—you need to read them and a whole lot more; you need to read them not so that you will know what they have written about, but so that you can begin to absorb some of the more ambitious models for what the novel can be.
Note: I haven't read every single writer on that list; there are even three I've literally never heard of; I can think of others I'd recommend in place of some he's cited; but still, his general point—that you need to read the major and minor classics—is correct.
The best piece of general advice I know, and not only about writing, comes from Dr. Johnson, The Rambler #63:
The traveller that resolutely follows a rough and winding path, will sooner reach the end of his journey, than he that is always changing his direction, and wastes the hours of day-light in looking for smoother ground and shorter passages.
I've known too many young writers over the years who sabotaged themselves by overthinking and therefore never finishing or sharing their projects; this stems, I assume, from a lack of self-trust or, more grandly, trust in the universe (the Muses, God, etc.). But what professors always tell Ph.D. students about dissertations is also true of novels, stories, poems, plays, comic books, screenplays, etc: There are only two kinds of dissertations—finished and unfinished. Relatedly, this is the age of online—an age when 20th-century institutions are collapsing, and 21st-century ones have not yet been invented. Unless you have serious connections in New York or Iowa, publish your work yourself and don't bother with the gatekeepers.
Other than the above, I find most writing advice useless because over-generalized or else stemming from arbitrary culture-specific or field-specific biases, e.g., Orwell's extremely English and extremely journalistic strictures, not necessarily germane to the non-English or non-journalistic writer. "Don't use adverbs," they always say. Why the hell shouldn't I? It's absurd. "Show, don't tell," they insist. Fine for the aforementioned Orwell and Hemingway, but irrelevant to Edith Wharton and Thomas Mann. Freytag's Pyramid? Spare me. Every new book is a leap in the dark. Your project may be singular; you may need to make your own map as your traverse the unexplored territory.
Hard truths? There's one. I know it's a hard truth because I hesitate even to type it. It will insult our faith in egalitarianism and the rewards of earnest labor. And yet, I suspect the hard truth is this: ineffables like inspiration and genius count for a lot. If they didn't, if application were all it took, then everybody would write works of genius all day long. But even the greatest geniuses usually only got the gift of one or two all-time great work. This doesn't have to be a counsel of despair, though: you can always try to place yourself wherever you think lightning is likeliest to strike. That's what I do, anyway. Good luck!

Ao3 fic writers questions. I was tagged by @batnbreakfast and @slightlyintimidating , thank you both!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
109
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
409, 456
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Recent fics are Berena (holby City) and all creatures great and small (2020 version).
Previous fandoms include Ted lasso, doctor who, the durrells and cabin pressure.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Cherry cake (Ted lasso, Ted x trent)
But that's what happens (doctor who, thasmin)
I promise I will do my best (to be true to myself) (holby City, berena)
Observations of trent crimm (the independent) (Ted lasso, Ted x Rebecca)
Rocket ships and shooting stars (Ted lasso, Ted x trent).
These definitely show which the biggest fandom is, rather than my best work. Who would have thought Ted x trent would blow up like it did!
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes, though sometimes very late. I appreciate the comments I get so I want to show that!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
In her dreams (holby City, berena) which when I wrote it was canon compliant with bernie being dead and then serena died at the end of the fic.
I don't like angst and will almost always write it with a happy ending if I do have to write it.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Most of my other fics to be honest. The guy (or girl) gets the guy (or girl) and they live happily ever after.
8. Do you get hate on fic?
Only once and it was about an actor, not the fic.
9. Do you write smut?
When the mood takes me 😅
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I've written, um, maybe 3 crossovers? None of them are particularly crazy.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of...
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Someone once asked to translate a thasmin one. I don't know if they ever did though.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Once, with the lovely and mysterious @slightlyintimidating . It was great fun! Definitely recommend
14. What's your all time favourite ship?
Haha... ha. Nope, can't answer that! I love all my ships.
15. What's a wip you want to finish but probably won't?
Happy to say that all my published fic is complete. At the moment, I'd just like to be in the mood to write anything at all really.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I'm pretty good at keeping people in character.
I think my dialogue is OK most of the time?
17. What are your writing weaknesses
Description. Urgh. Just imagine something in your head and pretend I described it please.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I don't think it works. If you're fluent and can write something that's not a mess, your audience might not be fluent to understand it. And if you're not then just... no. Write it in whatever language your fic is in and say its that other language.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Harry Potter. Didn't publish it as I didn't even realise fanfic was a thing back then.
20. Favourite fic you've written?
Might be recency bias, but Home Front (acgas, Siegfried x audrey). I reread it recently and loved it. It has a good plot, the characters are solid, the OCs are good, the setting is good, the animals are lovely.
I'm doing this on my phone and I can't rewrite the questions out. Sorry. If you would like to answer these, consider yourself tagged!

❝ your top 15 favorite tv shows can say a lot about your personality ❞
thank you for the tag, @nilesandcc! 😊
i thought this was going to be easy, but then i realized quickly that i was wrong. i just watch and love too much tv. i could probably do a definitive top 50 without much suffering, but who knows?
my criteria here was: shows i still have in sort of regular rewatch rotation! this meant that i left out shows like buffy and xena and x-files that i have not returned to for years, even though they are forever faves to me.
my list, in alphabetical order because i can't hierarchy this one! (except gilmore girls is always the true #1, obviously.)
30 Rock
Anne with an E
Arrested Development
Community
The Durrells
Flight of the Conchords
Ghosts (BBC)
Gilmore Girls
New Girl
The Office
Our Flag Means Death
Reign
Succession
Superstore
What We Do In The Shadows
i'm too fuzzy-brained to tag people right now, but please do it if you'd like to list your favorite shows; i'd love to read your lists!

I better not hear Andrea, Riot, and the rest of the stans saying Henry hasn't changed. Henry's lack of support for Durrell in the last few years, Henry not taking the time to go to Jersey to do the challenge and properly promote the event, caused it to have to be canceled forever because now it probably costs more to organize and hold the event than the money they make.
If he would've promoted the event and let everyone know he'd be there, fans would have paid to go see him.
He had the time to go to the Super Bowl but he didn't have the time to go to Jersey to support Durrell even though the past 2 years he wasn't busy filming anything by the time the challenge took place.
Honestly, I feel so disappointed that he stopped caring about things that used to be so important to him.
