The Look - Jack Barber Imagine [Downton Abbey: A New Era]
Tumblr media
Title: The Look
Pairing: Jack Barber X Reader
Word Count: 1,161 words
Warning(s): jealousy, insecurities
Summary: Jack invites (Y/n) out to visit the set of his new film. (Y/n) was more than excited to see a film set outside of a studio. However, some of said excitement is squashed once they catch sight of Jack's interactions with Lady Mary Talbot.
Author's Note: First of all, Mary's a better woman than me. Second of all, don't say I don't do anything for you people (I am still looking at that post about all those Hugh Dancy characters, by the way).
--------------------
When Jack first invited me to visit the set of his new film, I was hesitant.
I had no desire to be seen as some kind of distraction from the project.
But his insistence seemed to calm some of my anxieties. I finally agreed. We arranged for me to visit for a short portion of the time. A matter of days, truly.
It did bring me some comfort to know that I would not have to go as long as I expected without seeing him.
Downton was even grander than I had been expecting. I remember just staring up at the building with nothing, but shock written on my face.
"(Y/n)!"
I pulled my eyes away from the building when I heard my name being called.
"Jack," I said happily, jogging over to him.
He pulled me into a tight hug immediately. "Oh, I am so happy that you made it."
"So am I," I leaned back to look at Downton again. "This place doesn't quite feel real."
"I am barely starting to accept it myself," he chuckled. "Come on, I'll show you where we're filming."
Jack's hand was placed on my back as he guided me into the grand building.
I met so many people that it felt like names were falling out of some kind of cup in my head. I didn't know that my mind could feel like it was completely overflowing.
It was a gorgeous place.
The people were kind.
The film crew itself felt like they were surrounded by this pristine bubble. If you got too close, then you would pop that bubble and ruin the illusion. People on display like museum exhibits.
No one quite caught my attention like Lady Mary.
She was kind and clever. I didn't know much about her beyond that. We had only interacted a few times between scenes being filmed.
Those moments in between were enough for my mind to play tricks on itself.
I would watch Jack and Mary talk between scenes. She seemed to always be the first to help when things went wrong. She carried herself with this strange mix of humbleness, yet some self-awareness of her status and power in the current situation.
Jack just had this... look. I couldn't describe it beyond that. It was just a look. But it was enough for me to be uneasy.
Watching them interact made my stomach churn. I felt my palms sweating and my face warming up out of some kind of anger or embarrassment. I wasn't sure which one.
I tried to ignore it.
Jack and I had been together long enough for me to completely trust him. If he was trying to keep something from me or if he were truly questioning his feelings for me, then I would have liked to believe that he wouldn't insist that I come to visit.
I thought I had done well. I thought that I managed to hide my thoughts and feelings behind a wall of kind grins and short answers.
I truly had no indication that I had been the cause of any worry until Jack asked if he could speak with me.
"Of course," I answered. "What do you-"
"Not here," he said quietly. "In private."
I hesitated for a moment before nodding and following him into some room away from the others.
"What is it," I asked when the door closed behind us.
"Is something wrong?" he replied.
I shook my head. "No, of course not."
I wanted to believe that I had done a better job hiding my thoughts. I never thought that I was one to allow my feelings to be easily recognized. Granted, Jack always seemed to see through whatever disguise that I attempted to use.
"(Y/n)," he said quietly. He stepped forward before reaching out and taking my hand. "I'm sorry, but we have been together long enough for me to know when something is upsetting you."
I took a deep breath, but I couldn't bring myself to admit to what I had been thinking. It all felt so ridiculous when I thought about speaking about it.
"Darling...," Jack's voice dropped to a whisper as he stepped even closer. "Please..."
"You and Lady Mary seem... very close," I admitted. My face warmed up as embarrassment started to take over. "I feel like I'm watching you look at her the same way that people told me you looked at me."
I looked away, only feeling more embarrassed by the way Jack was looking at me.
"(Y/n)," he spoke up after a moment. "Please, look at me."
I took a deep breath before looking at him.
"I had no idea that you were uncomfortable with what I had done," he explained. "That may very well be my own fault. But I can promise that there is nothing between Lady Mary and me."
I felt the beginning of a soft smile forming at the corner of my lips. I would always trust him. Perhaps that could have been dangerous, but I would never have the heart to care about such a thing.
"You are the only one that I have ever had eyes for," he continued. "That 'way' people have said I look at you has never changed and has never been pointed at another being. It never will. I love you."
My smile formed fully at the sentiment. I still felt ridiculous for worrying, but now that was met with a sense of gratitude. How had I been so fortunate to find a man that could share such love with no hesitation?
"I love you too," I mumbled after a moment. "I'm so sorry. I should have come to you the moment these feelings surfaced. I never meant to pull you from your work by worrying about me."
"I believe I made the choice to worry about you long before I made the choice to make films," he replied. His free hand cupped the side of my face. "You will always be my first priority."
I leaned in and pecked his lips quickly. "You should get back to your film."
"I am going to see if I can find a place for us to share an evening away from the others," Jack said. "We both have earned a night to ourselves."
"That would be wonderful, Jack."
His smile only grew more as he admired me for a moment.
That was the first time I felt like I could truly see it. The way he looked at me. That small glint in his eye. I felt my face warming up under his gaze.
"Go," I pushed on his shoulder playfully.
He chuckled, kissing me again before going to head back out to work on the film.
I laughed a bit at him.
He was the best thing I had been lucky enough to have in my life.
And now I could see that he could have very well thought the very same way about me.

i was wondering if you’d have any interest in writing a little something that takes place post-a new era where after cora has started treatments, robert notices how she’s getting better and better or something in that vein?
It’s not until she begins to recover that Robert began to realize just how poorly Cora had been feeling. He supposed he’d chalked it up to overwork, to stress. To the inevitabilities of growing older.
She took her treatments at the hospital and was very secretive about them. Robert had asked, once, if it was really terrible. He didn’t want to know, but was willing to suffer along with her if it helped. Her face paled and grimaced and she assured her husband that he didn’t want to know anything about it. Wisely, he chose not to press the issue. If even his matter-of-fact wife couldn’t bring herself to talk about it, it must have been truly ghastly. He spent several days trying to escape the various torments he imagined, drawn from it by the sparkle recovered in Cora’s eyes.
The return of her health was like a slow, nearly imperceptible return of the sun after a long, dreary day. Robert had not exactly realized it had been quite so gray until the force of her returned, illuminating his world once again.
It began small. They talked before sleep again, Cora abandoning her book to turn to watch him, asking him questions about his day. She held his hand and touched his face and stole kisses at every opportunity She asked to join him as he toured the estate and they began to meet for luncheon in town on her busy days.
She laughed more, and chased their grandchildren, and lured him to London for a wicked weekend “away”. They didn’t bother to open the house but instead spend a glorious three days in a hotel room they hardly ever stepped outside of (except for her hours at treatment, during which he went to the club).
He hardly missed the responsibility of the estate, busy as he was with a wife newly returned to the living. He imagined Mary was thankful his attention was elsewhere. And she began to step away from the hospital, finding she no longer needed the crutch of it to find meaning in her day.
“How many people have to face this kind of thing thing feeling that they’ve wasted their lives. I don’t. Not at all.”
And she hadn’t. But what use was another chance at living if they didn’t do exactly that?
They toyed with the idea of going to America, Robert mostly just humoring her and hoping she decided against it. Which she did, but he wasn’t entirely sure Paris was a trade in the right direction.
Still, they’d trudged together up the steps of the Eiffel Tower, which they hadn’t visited since they were barely more than children. And as they stood side by side and took in the size and majesty of the world spread out beneath their feet, he only had eyes for her.
He kissed her there, on top of the world, Paris teeming at their feet.
She was better. He was better.
They were better.

One thing I’ve seen a couple of times in discussions of Thomas’s options vis a vis Richard and Guy has made me curious.  This is the use of the gendered term “mistress” to describe Thomas’s role if he continues a relationship with Richard after his marriage.  The thing about “mistress” in a early 20th C context is that the relationship it describes IS subordinate to the relationship described by “wife.” A mistress could be a wife if the man chose to divorce his wife and marry her instead. That he’s choosing to deny her the benefits of marriage does make her claim on him less than the wife’s.  Divorce may have been frowned at this point in history, dependent on a variety of social factors, but it was a hell of a lot easier to get a divorce than for a man to marry a man.
In history, we have m/m and f/f couples who lived as husbands and wives even when their relationships could not be sanctioned by the state through formal marriage.  We also have state sanctioned marriages that are purely the result of economic/social necessity and have no romantic or sexual meaning for those involved.  Why couldn’t gay men and lesbians have had both kinds of relationships at the same time?

And I hope I can be everything for a while yet
*MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA”
Evidently, I have been haunted by THAT scene ever since I first saw it. This is my first attempt at writing Cobert fan fiction so any feedback is very welcome:)
There’s both original text by none other that our holy master Julian Fellowes and I wrote additionally what I imagined to be their thoughts and fears when they were faced with the possibility of losing each other.
“I know it’s late, but could we go for a walk?”
Although Cora had known for a long time that she would someday be obliged to discuss the matter with Robert, being confronted with that very situation made her feel nauseous. This was something she was used to by now, as it took her often all the willpower she had left to get down a few bites during dinner, but she knew that this time it was not predominantly the illness that made her feel this way. It was the thought of looking into Robert’s unknowing features that scared her the most.
The Marquis de Montmirail and Robert exchanged some final words, but Cora didn’t really understand much of any of it, as behind her still and smiling façade she was fighting an indecisive battle on how she should best deliver the words she was bound to pronounce.
Only after Robert had slipped his arms underneath her own did she once again notice the surroundings clearly. The villa was enlightened by the sparkling party that pulsated around the beautifully decorated walls and for a second, she caught a glimpse of Tom and Lucy swaying in each other’s arms. Another wave of grief suddenly struck her. Robert had also requested earlier that night to share a dance to the cheerful music, just like the two of them had done so many times.
Dancing together had always been one of their passions. Not only because Cora was convinced that she had earned Robert’s love during one of their most memorable dances, but because they would always forget everything and everyone surrounding them when the two of them whirled around the dance floor intertwined in each other’s arms.
However, this evening Cora had to decline. She knew all too well that her constant dizziness would never allow her to spin around. Her muscles, weak as they had become in the past months, could never muster the quick beats she would have to follow along.
Robert had glanced at her somewhat irritated, given the fact that it had not rarely been his wife who had urged him so desperately to share a dance with her. The decline did seem rather unusual.
Luckily, Robert slowly strayed away from the dazzling party, turning into a much calmer corner of the property. Only delicately could the two of them hear the band playing a slow and melancholic ballad.
Staring at the velvet fabric of her dress, Cora still had not made up her mind how she would deliver the news. She knew precisely that Robert was still so agitated due to the possibility that he may have never been the rightful heir to Downton that it felt harsh to confront him with another unsolvable problem. Because yes, it was indeed unsolvable.
Robert must have understood that Cora walked peculiarly silent next to him, as it felt odd to him that she didn’t carelessly start to talk. He had found himself often confused by the way Cora would always find a topic to discuss, no matter how irrelevant it may have appeared to him. Although their arms were tightly intertwined, Robert felt as if thousands of kilometers were in between his wife and himself. In order to break the uncomfortable silence, he asked the first question that came to his mind, even though he did not really care for the answer, as he was still so preoccupied with the unsuspected turn this journey down to the south of France had taken.
“Have you enjoyed our trip, dear?”
Oh, it was too much. The words instantly evoked a feeling of deep hopelessness and Cora felt the panic bubble up inside her chest. She felt as if all the blood inside her head had sacked down at once, leaving her with a strong lightheadedness. She could no longer rationally control her thoughts and so the words just spilled out surprisingly cold and unfiltered.
“I think I’ve got cancer, Robert”
She had stopped her steps and let go of his arm, just staring into the open night and the Mediterranean expanding into the unknown horizon in front of them.
There was a long and heavy silence.
Neither of them dared to breathe and it seemed as if the concept of time had been destroyed all together as they were standing still side by side.
“Cora, what are you saying? What do you mean?”
Robert knew very well what the concept of cancer signified but it was a sort of perplexed denial that tried to keep up his strength.
“I- I’ve had some…”
Cora’s voice cracked slightly as she tried to pronounce the words. She finally turned to face her husband, standing there with his fists tightly clenched together. His eyes sparkled dangerously, even though his mouth was pressed tightly together to keep up the image of a somewhat steady posture.
“I’ve had some- some symptoms for quite a while, you see, some very evident symptoms and there is no use in denying that”
Cora was once again surprised how rational she made all of this sound. Inside, she could barely keep herself from falling apart.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?!”
“I was going to and then suddenly we were coming here”
Robert’s heartbeat sped up and he as well fell victim of a panic rising inside him. To keep himself from succumbing to the overwhelming emotions, he chose a feeling he could handle much more easily. Anger.
“But you should never have come here! We have to get you to a proper doctor. And I don’t mean some cackling Marseilles!”
Now it was Cora’s turn to feel enraged. She didn’t particularly know why, but it made her feel safer and she liked the sensation of feeling more in control of her feelings, so she answered with a much steadier voice:
“Doctor Clarkson is more than capable of coming up with a diagnosis”
Robert on the other hand felt the panic leak through every fiber of his being. He felt hot and cold, his head throbbed and his hands started to sweat heavily. But didn’t he need to reassure his wife? He was the strong one, wasn’t he?
More to soothe himself than anything else, he said with a stutter:
“We’ll go to London. We’ll- We’ll go to America if we have to”
There was no question that he stumbled and fell down the slippery slope of a deep-rooted fear: He was going to lose Cora. The one person he could not live without.
Cora knew all too well that there was no use in all of this. The symptoms were evident. Gastric cancer. No doctor, whether in London or America, could alter that.
“We’ll discuss it when we know more”
Was there more to know, though? Beside an exact diagnosis, which didn’t leave much room for interpretation at this point, there was not much to discover. Nothing pleasant, anyway.
The tranquility in Cora’s voice triggered a sudden reaction in Robert and he could not help himself but shout.
“You should have told me!”
His face was bright read. The grass underneath his feet felt as if it had started to move and he could not recall having ever felt so lonely. His wife stood there opposite him, but it seemed as if he was trapped in an overwhelming loneliness.
Robert’s outburst started another reaction. This time it was Cora who lost control over her emotions.
“With the chance of a last treat before illness to cover our lives?!”
Her voice lost all of its strength and by the end of the sentence it had almost vanished completely.
“It can’t be as bad as that”
“Robert, I’ve run the hospital for years! Do you think I just sat there with my ears blocked?!”
Like a dam that had been opened abruptly, all that had been building up inside Robert’s chest suddenly burst out. He rarely was a man to openly display his emotions, but now no strength on earth could hold back his genuine fear.
Seeing him like that immediately made Cora feel guilty. This was exactly the reason why she had evaded the topic for so long. Nothing to her was more painful than to watch her loved ones suffer. To be herself the cause of such great sadness seemed unbearable and so she took on the role she had learned to play ever since her first daughter was born: The caring mother.
“Oh no, no no no. No. No”
She started towards her husband, embracing his shaking figure between her arms, trying to reassure him with her warmth and proximity. Although Robert was almost a head taller than his wife, he appeared to be much frailer beside her. Tears fell down the side of his cheeks and his head turned numerous directions in order to evade the face of his love. He could not bear to look at her.
“That’s not what I wanted at all”, she said. “We’re not sad people! My being ill now doesn’t make us sad!”
The words seemed completely ridiculous and she knew so as well, but she wanted to end this moment so desperately that she could not think of another way of reassuring her husband. While his head constantly turned away from her gaze, she tried to catch his glimpse. Looking into each other eyes had always been their biggest comfort after a disagreement and it appeared to her to be the most sensible thing to do now. How could she possibly ease his pain?
Robert chocked up some word fragments she could not quite understand as they were so heavily drenched with his sobs.
“To lose my mother, and my name. Must I lose you too?! I can’t bear it”
His fingers delicately traced her shoulders down her back. Never until know had it appeared to him how slender her frame had gotten. She always had been very slim, but know as he touched her, the narrow shoulders almost seemed to give in under the very subtle pressure of his hands.
Finally, their eyes met. Oh, his beautiful blue eyes. Him loosing her? She had never thought of it that way. She always felt as if she would be the one to lose him. It was her who had always wanted him. Always. So much so, that she had accepted the possibility to live in his company without reciprocated love when she married him. There was no one on this earth that she cared for more, ever since she had first laid eyes upon him in a stuffy London ballroom. If anyone had the harder burden to carry, it was her.
“If I can bear it, you can. Remember, I’ve loved you from the start! I loved you before you loved me!”
Those words hurt him deeply, but Robert knew they weren’t intended as an insult, but simply a mere stating of a fact.
How he hated himself for having been so blind. He had been fond of Cora from very early on, did recognize her kindness and her warm nature, but he was so caught up in the whole “Save-Downton-No-Matter-What-Business” that he didn’t pay enough attention to the actual soul behind the solution to his problem. The shameful feeling of having wasted almost an entire year beside the love of his life would haunt him to his grave.
“I’ve always been ashamed of that”
“Don’t be. I had money. You needed it”
There she was again, the pragmatic wife who, more often than not, had been the calming guide to Robert. Although society might have been convinced that an American heiress may never have control over her emotions, there was no doubt that the English Earl had been dependent on his wife’s matter-of-fact statements more than once.
Cora’s hand brushed over Robert shoulder, feeling his tensed muscles.
“And then love came. And we have been happy, haven’t we?”
In that moment, even though the sentence only lasted for a mere second, their whole life story flashed before their eyes.
The way Robert had awkwardly introduced himself the first time to her, while Cora couldn’t help but giggle.
The moment she had told him that she was pregnant for the first time and the way he didn’t let anyone get too close to her after that, in order to make sure she could not be hurt in any way.
The day Sybil spilled the whole pot of coffee in the library and although Carson had been furious, the two parents burst into laughter.
Their ups and downs. Their most cheerful memories and their most heart-wrenching moments. It was all there, hovering in between them.
“Oh Darling!”
In desperate need of each other they brought their faces together and exchanged a kiss. But it wasn’t just like any other goodnight kiss they had been sharing for more than thirty years of marriage. They clung onto each other as if it would mean they could never touch again were they to separate. Cora tasted the salt of Robert’s tears on her lips, which led her to initiate another kiss before the previous one came to an end. Even though their bodies were as close as they could possibly manage, Cora wanted to be even nearer to her husband, so she let her hands grasp the silvery strands of Robert’s hair and pulled herself even more into the passionate embrace.
After all, she didn’t know how many times life would allow her to feel her husband that way.
A slight sob escaped her lips as they separated once again.
Robert took in the beautiful features of his wife. The moonlight reflected on her pale skin, her eyes sparkling even more due to many tears that gathered on her long, dark lashes. How beautiful she was. How beautiful she always had been.
“You have been everything to me. Everything!”
Oh, and he was to her, indeed. He always had been. But Cora felt her heart relax at the statement. She knew her husband adored her, but it always brought a smile to her face when he reassured her with such a confirmation.
And so it did now, even though the two of them found themselves in such a desperate environment. Their life, laid out in front of them, in pieces. Nevertheless, her smile couldn’t have been more genuine.
“And I hope I can be everything for a while yet”

(More or less coherent) Thoughts on Downton Abbey: A New Era
This is going to be a very long post, so be prepared.
To start with the non-spoilery bits: I loved it, it was great to see these characters again. The scenery is breathtaking, the castle is still beautiful, the costumes are stunning, the cast is wonderful. I definitely recommend to watch it!
And now to the spoilery stuff:
It was a great idea to start with Branson’s wedding, because it gives an oportunity to do a roll call as both the family and the servants would be there, and it was so nice too see everyone again.
I also loved that we could see some recurring characters in this film as well (unlike in the first one), it was great to see Mr Mason, Dr Clarkson, and Mr Murray!
It was a nice and smart move of Violet to leave the villa to Sybbie as otherwise she wouldn’t inherit anything.
I had to admit, I started laughing when they first mentioned the Marquis of Montmirail, because do you know who else is a Montmirail?
This guy:
Tumblr media
Well, he was the Count of Montmirail, not the Marquis, but still, the thought of him being related to the Crawleys and thus having the possibility to wreak havoc in Downton with his servant is equally amusing and terrifying.
(For those who are not familiar with him, this is Godefroy de Montmirail (played by Jean Reno) of the 1993′s film Les Visiteurs (The Visitors), a French comedy about a medieval knight and his servant (played by Christian Clavier) being transferred to the modern-day France. I saw this film about a hundred times when I was a child.)
The film within a film storyline was my favourite, it was very well done, and gave us an opportunity to see what is it like when a film crew invades a stately home (which actually happened to Highclere Castle). Also, letting the servants be the extras in the final scene and thus giving the downstairs actors to wear really fancy costumes was brilliant. Not only plotwise,  but because in several interviews (especially in the early seasons) I heard the downstairs actresses talking about the so-called ‘costume envy’, and now they had the chance to dress up, too. Plus, I really loved when Mr Carson came out in his costume, saying how outrageous this was and Mr Hughes told him that his outfit wasn’t really different from his regular clothes, because this also had been mentioned several times that Jim Carter’s costumes had gone through the least changes over the years. I know these things are not everyone’s cup of tea, but I really enjoyed these kind of inside jokes and self-reflection (and I’m pretty sure there are many more in the film we don’t even know about).
The now infamous hat shop scene was like that, too, when the shopkeeper thought Maud was Carson’s wife. I think it was very funny.
Back to the film within the film, I was so happy that Mr Molesley also got his opportunity to shine, and he did shine brightly. Him becoming a scriptwriter was so well-deserved, and Kevin Doyle was great in the role. I really loved the scene when he described the ending he imagined for The Gambler, and Mary was standing there with Mr Barber, touched by his ideas.
I also loved Daisy’s scene with Myrna Dalgleish, I really enjoyed watching her turning into Mrs Patmore giving the actress a pep talk. This was also very nice because at the beginning of the film Mrs Patmore says something about trying to make Daisy happy. And all the scheming to get Mrs Patmore together with Mr Mason... it was nice to see them finally getting together.
I have read mixed reactions about Thomas’ storyline and I have to admit, I liked that he decided to go with Guy Dexter, even though their relationship didn’t start as easily as it did with Richard Ellis. Although I have to add that Thomas and Richard were basically equals, they both worked in service, but Guy was different as Thomas had to serve him and him being that friendly (I’m not sure that’s the right word) was definitely not something Thomas was used to. Now that he was a butler, he basically achieved everything he could in his profession, and as Guy’s dresser, he would have the opportunity to travel as well, and a chance to be loved properly, to quote Elton John in Rocketman. Plus, he was heartbroken over Richard which I think made his decision easier to make. I hope they will be fine together and become the gay power couple of 1928.
Also, shoutout to Mrs Hughes and Mary for being so supportive regarding Thomas’ sexuality. And to the Hungarian translator of the film who translated Guy Dexter’s original name (Quentin Sidebottom or something like that, I can’t remember) as Tom Porka which sounds like a slavic name, but read together is “Tomporka” which sort of means “little butt” (tompor is a word for butt and -ka is a diminutive suffix in Hungarian).
What I really liked about the French villa storyline was that it put the Crawleys onto the other side of the hereditary coin. The series started with the Crawleys having an outsider heir, a complete stranger to take away what should be theirs, and now they are the outsider heirs who come to take away the villa from Madame Montmirail and her son. I think that’s a pretty clever parallel.
On Robert’s illegitimacy plotline: now that George was born, the Crawleys’ hereditary issues are now resolved, so the possibility of Robert being the Marquis’ son was more of an internal conflict, and I know those things aren’t so interesting visually, perhaps it’d have been more interesting to see more of this, but well, this is a 2-hour film and not a TV series. Still, it was a little weightless, although I have to admit I did wonder whether he was illegitimate or not. (However, I was more afraid that Violet would die before she could tell the truth and we would have never known what had happened)
Cora’s health problems also seemed pretty weightless to me as well, it would have worked a lot better if this were a tv show and not a film. I think it was there so the people might start suspect that it might be her who would die, and when I first heard that Cora would have some health issues, I asked myself “what if Fellowes does something unexpected and instead of Violet he kills off someone else?” (Not that I’d wanted Violet to be killed off, but she was the most likely to go) On the other hand, I liked Robert’s emotional outburst and when Cora decided to help Myrna with her accent.
I also thought Edith’s investigation would be a bit more prominent (I know, this is a 2-hour film), but I’m glad she’s writing again.
As for the Bransons, I wish we could have seen more of the development of their relationship, because after the wedding, they basically were the happy couple and that was it. Also, the baby Branson is a boy or a girl? I can’t remember.
I think it was a wise move of sending Carson away from Downton during the filming and there is something very endearing in the way Mrs Hughes calls him Charlie.
Mary was great during this film, I loved her storyline, the way she handled the whole filming process, and that it was her who initiated the transition to a talking film. I also loved her dynamics with Mr Barber (and Mr Barber in general, he was a great addition to the characters), I ship them since I’ve found out about the voice acting storyline, and while they didn’t get together in the end, I really enjoyed their scenes, to watch their relationship develop, and to see that the attraction was mutual between them, and not just another suitor being head over heels in love with Mary but without any results. Putting him in parallel with Matthew was a smart move and Mary rejecting him in the end kind of mirrored Violet’s storyline with the Marquis.
Violet’s death scene was done very well. It was very sad, but it was very nice that the whole family was there, and Edith and Mary were holding each other, it was such a great scene.
Although I think Mary might still be too young to be Violet 2.0. But I loved the Mary-Carson scene, it was great!
And I don’t think Andy would be suitable for the role of the butler. To begin with, he wants to be a farmer, so I hope he says no to the offer and they hire a 40-something bloke who would get on Mr Carson’s nerves.
I’m so happy for Mr Molesley and Baxter! It’s a well-deserved ending for them! And I really liked the scene between her, Bates and Mr Carson.
The costumes were stunning again, my favourite pieces were Lucy’s blue coat at the beginning, Edith’s Riviera outfit (the one with the orange robe), and Mary’s pyjama set with the dark red robe, that was absolutely gorgeous. Also, I don’t know if it was on purpose, but Mrs Patmore’s costume in The Gambler has a similar colour of the dress Barbra Streisand wore in the restaurant scenes of Hello, Dolly! And this is the scene where she is trying to settle the things with Mr Mason. Anyway, it was a nice touch.
Also, there were a few things I didn’t like. First of all, there are too many things happening in the film and you just can’t feel the weight of them (Cora’s health, for instance), and there were a few of these plotlines that would have needed more screentime to really hit. Well, I think if it wasn’t a two-hour film, but a new season or a half-season, they would have had enough time to elaborate on these.
Second, Mr Bates. I know that I was just mentioning that there were too many things happening in the film, but poor Mr Bates doesn’t really have anything to do here. I love him, I loved his scene with Baxter and Mr Carson, but besides that he couldn’t do much which is a pity because Brendan Coyle is so good at this role. I would have loved to see a scene where he and Robert discuss this whole illegitimacy thingy, or having a chat with Guy Dexter.
Overall, I loved the film, it was great, and thank you for reading this really long rambling!

Downton Abbey Headcannons
My mother and I went to Downton Abbey: a new era, and when we went back, we were both hyped and she said ''come on that's so sad it's ended'' and I said ''yup, time to start writing fanfictions about what happened next'' but she didn't like most of my headcannons so here's a preview and I'll put more next time.
SPOILER ALERT
Context: I imagine that as a new series centered around the grand-children of Robert and Cora, but with still their parents and all in the picture.
George, Marigold and Sybbie are raised practically together even though only George is in Downton. Since they don't have a big age difference they are best friends and consider themselves as ''the Three'' even though they all have half-siblings (Caroline Talbot, Peter Pelham and Violet Branson, yes, neither the sex nor the name were stated but come on what else) who are much younger.
The Sinderbys (Atticus and Rose) are back from New-York because Lord Sinderby died and they've got to manage the estate. They visit Downton regularly.
Johnny Bates wants to become a footman but his parents think there is no more future in that job and want him to do something else. He'll eventually be put against his will, at the age of 13, at the Mason farm to help with the cows and will find a dog having pups in the hay, so he'll help it, save the pups but not the mom, the pups are more or less the breed Lord Grantham loves so he gives one to Lord Grantham and one to Caroline, because he's so crushing on her even though they are 13 and 12.
During the Battle of England, Downton will welcome many children who fled London.
In 1939, George gets 18 and to celebrate his birthday, Sybbie invites everybody at la Villa des Colombes, but they've got to go back to England because France gets invaded by Germany.
In 1937, Marigold tells her mother she's kinda seduced by the fascist speech or something and Edith decides it's the right moment (why she thinks that, I don't know) to tell her daughter that she's her biological daughter and that Gregson was killed by nazis during a brawl. Marigold laughs and says that she didn't know for Gregson but of course she knew she was Edith's daughter since, well... what else, really? Plus when she asked George to get informations, he asked his mother and Lady Mary said ''yeah, sure, Edith had a child out of wedlock but don't tell anyone ok?'' and he told Marigold since she was the one asking.
Edith is going for a news story in Poland but she gets caught in the invasion and is emprisonned, thus Bertie's main role for the series will be to try and have her delivered by diplomatic means.
So basically that's a first thing. If you want to know more details, stay tune for George's elopement or Lord Grantham's death.

A few amused thoughts on Downton Abbey: A new Era
Small spoilers below. Not detailed, just tidbits.
The funniest installment yet, by far. Zingers and one liners abound; I've cackled a lot. Especially Maggie Smith.
Not only do we get Jim Carter and Imelda Staunton in few scenes, one involves a shopkeep accidentally calling Maude 'his wife' 🤣
Carson and Mary hugs ☺️
The Carsons reading in bed. Old boobies. Plus the Parkers, Baxley and Mrs Patmore/Mr Mason. My heart!
Mary helping Elsie literally get rid of her husband. Founnd Mary to have finally matured.
Elsie and Thomas (and later, Mary) having one of the most open, and best, conversations about his sexuality.
Emotion bursting out of Robert like the thing in 'Alien'
The last scenes (if you know, you know)... can we talk about how they had the ENTIRE cast for those shots?! I want the behind the scenes for that!
Chelsie shippers: we now know the old Butlers name! Please adjust fan fics accordingly.
Matthew and Sybil are definitely not forgotten ❤
I felt like there was a hefty bit of fan service here. Or somebody who reads fan fic slipped JF some notes. All our downstairs crew are paired up.
Honestly Kevin Doyle is a gem. And Molesley has a wild imagination.
Enjoyed it more than the first movie, but they are quite different movies. 8/10

Hi, would you be willing to share some of the positive things Thomas had in the movie (you seem to have enjoyed the movie for Thomas). For example, him being butler, any cool lines or favorite scene/s?
Thank you for your ask! I must admit I was not fond of Thomas's storyline then I learned of the spoilers, but after seeing the movie twice, I am much more satisfied with it. Or calm at least.
This will contain major SPOILERS FOR DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA, so don't read further if you haven't seen the movie and want to remain free of spoilers.

.
I enjoyed the scene with Thomas and Mrs Hughes. Thomas tells her Richard Ellis is getting married. This was my number one fear with the movie; that it would somehow break up Thomas and Richard (I have never cared so much about a fictional ship before as I have with these two). Heartbreaking as this was for me to watch, I love that Mrs Hughes encourages Thomas to talk to her about what is upsetting him, and that he feels comfortable enough to be as open as he is to her. The relationship between Thomas and Mrs Hughes have always been one of my favorites, so it was nice to get this scene between them. I have always wished to see how the scene would have played out when Thomas talked to Mrs Hughes in s03e08 after the Jimmy incident, and this scene in the movie is how I imagined that conversation between them could have gone.
I like that Thomas was actually allowed to be the butler in this movie, and not showed to the side again like in the first movie.
Thomas leaving Downton was something I first struggled with. I was one of the people who liked that Thomas was made butler at Downton at the end of the series, and that he formed friendships and had a secure job. But as we see in the new movie, a lot of the staff is married (or soon to be) and don't live at Downton anymore. I can imagine this must be a lonely feeling for Thomas, seeing everyone around him being allowed to love and be with who they want. Maybe going with Guy Dexter to America will offer up a new chance for happiness for him. It's left very open-ended, but since this is possibly, probably, the last time we will see Thomas, I am choosing to believe he will have a great time in Hollywood and meet many interesting and like-minded people.
(In my head I imagine that he and Richard never really forget about each other, and after some years start to write to each other again and meet up and get together finally. But that's a different topic).
Speaking of Guy Dexter: I think he seems like a very nice man. I wish we could have had more scenes with him and Thomas, but I like that he seems very calm and he doesn't push Thomas into anything and tells Thomas this could mean as much or as little as he (Thomas) wants. Thomas saying “what?” then Dexter asks him to come to America with him is very endearing. The same when he says “I've done it” after handing in his resignation and the big smile he gives Dexter (I also like that Mary wished Thomas to be as happy as our cruel world allowes and the soft way Thomas says "thank you" and the music that starts to play).
Oh, and I also liked the hair and sideburns he had to wear when the servants got to be part of the movie; he looked both silly and very cute.
All in all not the story I really wanted for Thomas, but it is meant to be a happy one for him, and I hope it will be. A lot of the characters in Downton Abbey is moving on, and Thomas is one of them. As he said in season 4, he did find America to be very modern and very interesting.

Downton Abbey -  A New Era
Thomas' story & spoilers & personal opinion
I desired liberty; for liberty I gasped; for liberty I uttered a prayer; it seemed scattered on the wind then faintly blowing. I abandoned it and framed a humbler supplication; for change, stimulus: that petition, too, seemed swept off into vague space: “Then,” I cried, half desperate, “grant me at least a new servitude!”
Jane Eyre, ch X
The first idea that came to mind when I watched A new era was a comparison with Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Bronte, published under the pseudonym of Currer Bell.
This story introduces Guy Dexter (not his real name, I can't help but imagine of reading a great number of fics having Thomas calling him "drama Quin". Anyway...) who, contrary to my original take, is not sleazy. Sure, he's a bit more handsy than socially acceptable considering their position, but he's likeable, handsome and charming.
All in all, Guy is a good character. I may shock and appall some people, but I also think he could be good for Thomas too. I like him as much as I like Richard. Or thereabouts. He's certainly one of the two (three if I add Chris, which I normally don't) love interests that I like for Thomas. On top of what I wrote about him above, he also likes and wants Thomas, which is the one plus I need as a Thomas' fan.
In different circumstances.
In these circumstances though, in A New Era, in order for this (I hesitate to call it romance) to work Richard has to go. And before he goes, he has to hurt Thomas.
Which makes Thomas vulnerable. Keep this in mind.
True, when Thomas got involved with Richard, he was vulnerable too. He was arrested and got saved by him. A little bit of sense of duty, the feeling that he has to reciprocate comes in the way, doesn't it? So, here we are, I already found/created one scenario for Thomas to not be with Richard any more that has nothing to do with Richard being 'dishonest' and hurting Thomas. Not so hard, is it?
And no, it’s not done so I won’t make Richard ‘bad’, but It immediately becomes Thomas' choice. Thomas' decision that has nothing to do with hurt and betrayal. Far more stable basis for a relationship that we want to last.
No though, that's not what happens in the movie. Richard decides to get married and informs Thomas about it, disappointing and betraying his own promise. Neat. So neat. Or not. It depends how you see it.
The positive in this is how Thomas is presented in this situation when we compare him with series 1 episode 1, where Thomas was ready to be Phillip's bit of rough when the first would be married. So kudos for this. Much appreciated.
And voilà! Guy is here and he's interested. In Thomas. Yay. Another love interest exactly when we need him. Thomas is angry, hurt, vulnerable... what better time to make decisions?
Again, Guy is a great man. But he's 'upstairs'. He's an actor, he's rich.
Out of nowhere (literally) he says "why don't you come and see for yourself [where I live]?"
And alright, Thomas "what?" is something I have missed dearly, but seriously, what?
Go and look after Guy, Thomas, since he doesn't have a wife... ‘valet?’ Thomas asks, ‘more than that’, Guy replies... Heavens! the romance! I'm swooning. Not.
Thank the Lord, these are two good actors, and Guy gazes at Thomas with such a longing, so much yearning, because otherwise... this would have been sleazy. The biting of the lip is a nice touch.
‘run the house, organise the journeys...make us comfortable’.
And that's suggestive, boy! it's so much suggestive.
Of course if his career folds, they will have to think again, Guy says, and Thomas has to comfort him. Comfort him. Nope, his career won't fold, Thomas reassures.
Do we see the dynamics here? Do we?
And compare it with Richard? Equal Richard, who kept on reassuring Thomas? Oh boy!
Because, yes, this is going to be compared with Richard, with what the previous movie gave to Thomas.
And then Guy gets handsy, straightens Thomas' lapels, which symbolically is a nice touch, unless you think that this will be Thomas' job from now on. Or it shows that Guy WILL return the favour.
It depends on how the viewer sees it. Are they optimists or are they pessimists? Do they like power dynamics or don't they like them?
Thomas takes a step back.
Also, it's not a joke. Guy has really asked him to go work for him.
And Thomas decides to go with Guy, because it's the "honest" way for him to live, having a "working friendship with Mr. Dexter". Guy will make films and Thomas will look after him...
Seriously, all these come out of Thomas' mouth. My heart beats fast and erratically. The fairytale... the Hollywood husbands. No, wait.
In the past, I'd written about Richard how he was everything that had gone wrong with Thomas and his previous love interests, and this now reminds me of Phillip.
Either way, this isn't equality. This is not balance.
This isn't progress. Not for me, at least.
Back to Jane Eyre, published in 1848, Bronte brings the protagonists together when the unbalance between the two is minimised. Jane has money & Edward has been taught humility. Also the love is explored in detail. Jane's agency gets stronger & stronger as the story progresses.
Guy Dexter is so very likeable. I like him. He's created to be liked, just as Richard was created to be liked. However, the story is not progressive. I cannot be convinced that working for your lover, in a foreign country, an Atlantic and the USA between everything and everyone you knew is the basis of stability for a man like Thomas. Or for anyone, for that matter.
Plus, yes, I will repeat,  it has to shatter Richard to pieces, remove the adversary entirely, & create an unbalanced affair instead of the equality I so enjoyed in the previous movie.
The end doesn't make Thomas the lord of his life, it gives him a different master to serve. And that's my issue with the plot. It's not Guy.
Give Thomas independence, let him freely choose between two love interests and I'm 100% behind it even if he chooses Guy. And that's my personal preference for a favourite character.
This, though, is a "new servitude" shown by the same narrative that says it's a happy ending for Thomas,  as a knee jerk reaction to Richard's news. All around, for me, it has done bad to Richard, to Guy and to Thomas.
In my Jane Eyre comparison, Rochester seems to be Guy, doesn't it? And while I have written more than a hundred words for Thomas/Richard stories I have no problem if they indeed make it work. None at all.
The premise though, the narrative, the story arc, the past and present, Thomas' situation, and for the reasons I wrote above, makes it difficult to buy this is Thomas' happy ending as it is now.
This isn't the happy ending. This is chapter 10 of a 35 chapters story that may bring a happy ending.
All in all, IMVHO get Thomas with Guy, but do it differently.
PS. Guy is gorgeous!

my thoughts on downton abbey: a new era in somewhat chronological order, includes spoilers!!!!
kill me but i liked it! it was surprisingly good, though very boring at times but what's new. mixed feelings overall. here's everything i loved and hated!
where's tom's family in that wedding???
good to see mr murray
thomas butlering around, being good at his job ❤
FOOTMAN ALBERT, him and daisy bickering about who gets to serve myrna. they're besties!
also daisy makes the best faces
okay so thomas looks sad in his office, mrs hughes checks up on him, the valet ellis is getting married......i teared up a little while i've been aware of this for two weeks. pros: elsie calling thomas brave, being a mother to him, thomas actually opening up. cons: the typical Life Is So Hard For You Thomas, and unfortunately i love mr ellis
just me or does robert look like roger moore
guy had ONE look at thomas and thought that's my man, appreciate it!
myrna dalgleish: [laughs like an actress]
i love myrna and i need to rewatch singin in the rain
dominic west is good looking what are you all talking about
all the kids are so grown up 😭😭 wish there was more of them though
disappointed to find out daisy is married. andy does nothing in this movie but neither does bates so. husband syndrome i guess
bertie's and edith's son PETER
not to be that person but if mary had married charles blake he wouldnt have chosen cars over her. honestly im just imagining she's single at this point, who cares about henry
love that edith's writing again <3
been looking at lucy's personality and still haven't found it. the moral of the story was that these days you need more than a pretty face to succeed in a movie and yet!
speaking of tom branson....where is he and who is the man that has replaced him
love how they act like sybbie will be practically left in a poorhouse unless she inherits a mansion lmao
like they just took the house and apparently the widow has no right to be angry they're losing it? the son just wants to have a brother. i understand they want the best for sybbie but it's not like she won't have money. she's nine she doesn't need a house!
yeah and why was maud bagshaw here again
"dont call me sir" 😳😳
just barrow! <3
thomas laughing and being out of breath god i have missed you
mr mason and denker!
carson just suffered through the whole thing i dont think he expressed a single positive emotion
".....what?" thomas returns with his iconic line
french man almost calling robert a brother and hearing cora is ill within half an hour. rough times. liked the ugly crying
i loved the singer at the party and bertie dancing though
"it's good that you changed it" or whatever the line was, i love him so much!
DR CLARKSON!!!!!!
daisy's and myrna's moment.
all the ladies look so good in the costumes! curly haired thomas!
thomas' face when myrna touches him lmaoooo
not a huge fan of mr mason and mrs patmore but i liked their little moment
molesley's new career was completely unnecessary. i liked his scene with mary and barber, but he already has a job! and is about to get married! not everyone needs to become rich??
i almost screamed when he proposed!!! phyllis being in that lovely outfit, making him kneel down! as she deserves! 💞
"may i kiss you?" "no"
i love guy dexter, he's funny and charming. they'll be a great couple, but i don't think i necessarily ship them. i liked the open ending
most importantly: thomas is free! he has broken the curse!!! he is finally leaving!!!!!
in my head he would've gone to like york but i'll accept this. grudgingly but i'll accept it. thomas has learned something in his life and i liked that he considered his options instead of jumping right in. i don't think he's blinded by the glamour and is aware of the realities
i always preferred thomas not to run off with a rich guy (Guy) (let's pretend i don't ship crowbarrow here for a moment, it's different) and especially not to work for him. but. Guy is being quite vague about it, it can mean as little as thomas wants to. and it's hollywood, not a dusty country house, i'd expect the working relationship for them to be quite different from if guy was a baron living in sussex or something. like i'm not a huge fan of it, but it's not a huge red flag for me either. thomas isn't a child.
let's admit it, i was very worried and pessimistic about thomas' ending at first (thought this was only through some vague spoilers and before we had any idea what guy dexter is like). i was worried like a mother is worried about her firstborn child, Oh how will he do in the big world all alone (just before the crash!), but after recovering from my first shock ive changed my mind about that. i have faith! i believe in thomas barrow and so should you! he will do AMAZING im sure of it!!!
like im still worried but like many people have pointed out, da3 is quite unlikely atm, so why should we expect the worst when we can expect the best? ANYTHING could happen and i like that, even if this wasn't the ending i had in mind for thomas.
"alright alright let's get back to work!" 💕💖💞💘💕💖 favourite line
myrna kissing albert was one of my favourite moments
if i ever rewatch (i will, thomas is so good in this) this i'll skip all the france parts, soooooo boring, the violet plot lasted way too long
mary honey why would andy become the butler are you out of your mind
bawled my eyes out when violet died, almost as bad as sybil....and the parallel of clarkson checking the pulse.....
isobel alone in that chair outside broke my heart :(
funeral scene was very nice however WHY was it the last thomas scene? we deserved a proper goodbye! even just 15 second long of him walking out of the abbey with a smile on his face!
i hope this is the last film, i know i said this the last time but i think now it's really all tied up and a good place to end the story
final thoughts: mediocore film but i love my son
aaaand about thomas/richard, gotta whine a little
richard is imo a perfect man for thomas in every way, and it was so well established that this is finally a relationship that could last. i dont get it why would you throw that away. i just dont get it, julian!
im a very au person (i mean i ship thomas with edward for heaven's sake) and i can imagine a world where they never see again, a world where this never happens, a world where they get back together again, a world where they meet in 1921 etc etc......some people cant do this and i feel rather sorry for them
and i already have so many scenarios about them, both canon compliant and not. so i'll be fine but i'm still bitter of what we could have had
also i looooove bittersweet, it could have happened kind of romance (sam and diane anyone?)
this certainly changes the way ive viewed richard, not for better or worse necessarily, but it's very interesting, i have many, many thoughts
that about sums it up! im off to write fanfic about this, bye

It's not often that a series airing on PBS generates a buzz, but that's exactly what Downton Abbey did, drawing record viewership to the public network and earning 69 Emmy Award nominations over the course of its six seasons, winning 16 times. Since the series ended, it's also spawned a pair of films, including the new Downton Abbey: A New Era. Hugh Bonneville, who's played the show's patriarch, Robert Crawley, isn't quite sure why the show captured the public's imagination the way it did, though he's pretty sure it has something to do with the way creator Julian Fellowes wrote it.
Downton Abbey: A New Era is now playing in theaters.

The chaperone destiny
Tumblr media
#The chaperone destiny free
In this fictional account of Cora and Louise’s off-and-on relationship, Laura Moriarty writes with grace and compassion about life’s infinite possibilities for change and, ultimately, happiness.”- Minneapolis Star Tribune
#The chaperone destiny free
As Cora struggles to tame Louise’s free spirit, she finds herself moving past the safety of her own personal boundaries. “Film star Louise Brooks was a legend in her time, but the real lead of The Chaperone is Cora Carlise, Brooks’ 36-year-old chaperone for her first visit to New York City in 1922. With much sharpness but great empathy, Moriarty lays bare the settled mindset of this stolid, somewhat fearful woman-and the new experiences that shake that mindset up.”- San Francisco Weekly Brooks’s may be the novel’s marquee name, but the story’s heart is Cora’s. “Throughout The Chaperone, her fourth and best novel, Laura Moriarty mines first-rate fiction from the tension between a corrupting coastal media and the ideal of heart-of-America morality. After a battle of wills, there’s a sudden change of destiny for both women, with surprising and poignant results.”- Entertainment Weekly But in Laura Moriarty’s engaging new novel The Chaperone, Brooks is just a hyper-precocious and bratty 15-year-old, and our protagonist, 36-year-old Cora Carlisle, has the not-easy mission of keeping the teenager virtuous while on a trip from their native Kansas to New York City. “With her shiny black bob and milky skin, Louise Brooks epitomized silent-film glamour. A mesmerizing take on women in this pivotal era.”- Vogue “In her new novel, The Chaperone, Laura Moriarty treats this golden age with an evocative look at the early life of silent-film icon Louise Brooks, who in 1922 leaves Wichita, Kansas, for New York City in the company of 36-year-old chaperone, Cora Carlisle. In this layered and inventive story, Moriarty raises profound questions about family, sexuality, history, and whether it is luck or will-or a sturdy combination of the two-that makes for a wonderful life.”- O, The Oprah Magazine and how their unlikely relationship changed their lives. “ The Chaperone is the enthralling story of two women. Over the course of Cora’s relationship with Louise, her eyes are opened to the promise of the twentieth century and a new understanding of the possibilities for being fully alive.ĭrawing on the rich history of the 1920s, ’30s, and beyond-from the orphan trains to Prohibition, flappers, and the onset of the Great Depression to the burgeoning movement for equal rights and new opportunities for women-Laura Moriarty’s The Chaperone illustrates how rapidly everything, from fashion and hemlines to values and attitudes, was changing at this time and what a vast difference it all made for Louise Brooks, Cora Carlisle, and others like them. And while what she finds isn’t what she anticipated, she is liberated in a way she could not have imagined. Ultimately, the five weeks they spend together will transform their lives forever.įor Cora, the city holds the promise of discovery that might answer the question at the core of her being, and even as she does her best to watch over Louise in this strange and bustling place she embarks on a mission of her own. Young Louise, already stunningly beautiful and sporting her famous black bob with blunt bangs, is known for her arrogance and her lack of respect for convention. Cora Carlisle, a complicated but traditional woman with her own reasons for making the trip, has no idea what she’s in for. Much to her annoyance, she is accompanied by a thirty-six-year-old chaperone, who is neither mother nor friend. Only a few years before becoming a famous silent-film star and an icon of her generation, a fifteen-year-old Louise Brooks leaves Wichita, Kansas, to study with the prestigious Denishawn School of Dancing in New York. Soon to be a feature film from the creators of Downton Abbey starring Elizabeth McGovern, The Chaperone is a New York Times-bestselling novel about the woman who chaperoned an irreverent Louise Brooks to New York City in the 1920s and the summer that would change them both.
