Objectively, the funniest part of the first book is when Dr. Bloor, rationally, says they can't be sure Charlie has the case they're after.

And Manfred is just like "Of course Charlie has it. Never mind that we only saw him leave with a normal bookstore shopping bag and not the case itself, and that Julia just received tons of boxes with Dr. Tolly's inventions and it could still be in any one of them, and that Charlie couldn't have had any idea to seek out this random object he had no way of knowing was distantly connected to him. Obviously she gave the super important plot device to a random 10-year-old she literally just met and has no reason to believe she would ever see again, much less would miraculously be both willing and able to help her find her missing niece"

How much did Amy know of Lyell’s activities before his disappearance?

She panicked when Charlie told her that someone was following them on their way back from Bloor’s after Charlie’s first week: 

  'Can you walk a bit faster, Mom?' asked Charlie. 'We're being followed.'

           'Followed?' Mrs. Bone stopped and looked back. 'Who's following us?'

          'Just a boy,” Charlie told her. 'He's on the other side of the road. It's silly because he knows where I live. He just seems to like stalking people.'

           'Come on, Charlie!' Mrs. Bone grabbed Charlie's arm and pulled him down another narrow alley. “It'll take us longer this way but I can't stand to be followed.'

          This had happened to his mother before, Charlie realized. It was soon after their wedding that his father had begun to look over his shoulder, Charlie's mother had told him. But who had been following them then?

When Charlie told her about Dr Tolly’s suitcase and Emma Tolly and that he felt like he had to help her, she told him how like his father he was, suggested that Lyell might’ve confided in Amy about his own attempts to fight back against the Bloors. She was also aware of how dangerous the Bloors and Yewbeams were, telling Charlie to be careful:

'I'm going to find this girl, Mom,' Charlie said earnestly. “It's funny but I suddenly feel it's something I've got to do.' To Charlie's dismay his mother's eyes began to look glittery and tearful. 'How like your father you are,' she said gently. “I'll keep your secret, Charlie. But take care. They're very strong, you know, the people you're up against.' Her quick look at the window told Charlie exactly whom she meant.

 'It's like a fairy tale,' sighed Mrs. Bone. 'I hope it'll have a happy ending.'

           'She doesn't belong to the Moons,' said Charlie. 'She hates them. She belongs to Miss Ingledew'

          'But can they prove it?' Amy Bone shook her head. 'Who's going to believe stories about hypnotism and ... shining knights and ringing bells... and Dr. Tolly's message.'

            'No one will have to know. Uncle Paton says the Bloors won't want other people to know what they've been up to, so they'll give up without a fight.'

           'I don't believe that,' said Amy Bone. 'Someone will have to pay for what's happened. Be careful, Charlie.'

She believed that Lyell’s death had been set up by the Bloors and Yewbeams:

'That poor boy,' she said when Charlie had told her everything. 'What can we do? And Paton — his own sisters! But I suppose that shouldn't surprise me.'

'Why Mom?' asked Charlie.

'Because of your father. I know they had something to do with his accident. And Grandma Bone, removing all his photos. As if he didn't exist.'

So, given all of this, Amy must’ve known something of Lyell’s business to be aware of how dangerous it was to defy the Bloors. She surely didn’t know everything, since she didn’t know about Emma Tolly or Maybelle’s Will, but enough that she knew that Lyell was doing things that the Bloors and Yewbeams didn’t like.

The DSMP and roleplaying villains in an ongoing narrative

And I do mean, specifically, roleplaying as opposed to a more traditionally presented form of storytelling. In traditional storytelling, there is one storyteller (or at least a very limited number), and there is also a very identifiable beginning, middle, and most importantly, an end, all of which is planned out before anyone else even sees the beginning. In roleplaying, each character is controlled by an individual--and therefore the story is splintered right from the get-go, by design--and the story is also continuous. Unless an ending is built in from the start (for instance, as in the 3rd Life SMP), there can be no permanent ending without a permanent character departure (c!Schlatt is a very rare example of a “permanent” ending in the Dream SMP, and even then he’s made appearances since then)

This is partially a ramble about my general thoughts and experience involving villains, roleplaying, and the study of stories overall, but hopefully a somewhat coherent one.

A villain in a traditional narrative can be defeated...and that’s that. The story does not continue from there. The Evil Wizard has ceased to exist. In a roleplay group that’s still active, though, the villain is still there. Their presence in the group’s story still needs to be accounted for and dealt with. The end of the villain’s evil plot is not the end of the whole story, so what do we do with that? We allow for change, and we allow for growth, in character.

Without completely exposing myself, I have several years of roleplaying experience (in total, possibly more years than some of you have been alive, honestly) and my longest stint with a single character was with a canon villain. My job as a roleplayer was to stay true to that character, including all of his various sins, transgressions, and abuses, and also interact with other characters in the group, several of whom had been harmed by him--and were, at some points, also harmed by me-playing-as-him. My character at no point, either in canon and in roleplay, apologized for anything he had done. He had no regrets, at least when it came to harming others. But he did, however, grow and change. In canon, his story ended with a surprisingly selfless act of heroism that didn’t erase his crimes but did help the heroes. In roleplay, I-as-the-character helped people in a similar vein. I interacted with others characters both positively and negatively. I experienced and demonstrated kindness with those close to me that I trusted, and refused to show that side to characters I didn’t trust.

I accomplished this by seeking to understand and sympathize with the character, to figure out why he did what he did, while also never swaying from the acknowledgement that he had hurt people. Though I don’t roleplay c!Dream now and have no intention whatsoever to do so, the same mentality applies when I look at him as a character. He hurt people, obviously, and was cruel and ruthless, but why? What drives him? What does he feel? What is he hiding and who gets to see which parts? He continues to exist in the story the Dream SMP is telling, so what interactions can he have going forward? If I were writing him in a closed narrative, like a book, I could throw him in jail, hoisted by his own petard and blinded by his own quest for power, and close the book on that, but that’s not happening here, so what can happen? 

Something has to, because this story isn’t over.

Charlie impatiently tossed three spoonfuls of sugar into the coffee. Mr. Onimous beamed. He took a sip, beamed again, and then, leaning close to Charlie, he said, 'He knew you were connected, Aries did. And so you are; you have the photograph. These cats aren't ordinary. They know things. They chose me because I've got a special way with animals. They lead me here and there, trying to undo mischief, and I just follow, helping where I can. This case,' his finger came down on the man holding the baby, 'this is one of the worst. Aries has always been very angry about it. Time and again he's tried to put it right, but we needed you, Charlie.'

I have a few thoughts about this paragraph:

1.     How has Aries tried to put ‘it’ right? Did he try to break Emma’s or Lyell’s trance? If so, Manfred’s hypnotism was mighty powerful if even the cats weren’t able to reverse it.  

2.     According to Dr Bloor and Manfred, the Flames purposefully made sure that Charlie received the picture of Dr Tolly instead of the Runner Bean photo. They wanted him to discover his endowment and go to the Academy.

3.     If the cats have been in the Academy, they had to have seen Mr Pilgrim at some point and know who he really is. Which makes it very interesting when they interact with Charlie and never tell him about his father.  

4.     Emma Tolly and Lyell Bone were lost that day in the cathedral square. If the Flames want to make it right, surely they would need to rescue both of them instead of just Emma.      

5.     The Flames might’ve wanted to kill two birds with one stone: Charlie receiving the photo of Dr Tolly would get him dragged into rescuing Emma Tolly, and it would get him sent to the Academy where his father is. This would eventually lead to Lyell being rescued too.

AN: Sorry it’s so long. I got kinda carried away with the second question.

10) Usually pretty strait forward but it depends on if it’s fanfic, super AU, or original work. If I have to research then I do that as early as possible but I also research while I write. If it’s a fanfic then I tend to have the movie or show playing while I write so I can get direct quotes right. I also always start with a basic outline that I go off of but that is never set in stone. A lot of stuff just comes as I write. Big events are planed way to far in advance sometimes. Translator apps  are my best friend for several languages like Italian, Welsh, and Cambodian in the Changling Families.

And another where Mary wasn’t adopted but Otto and Lenora had a daughter when Toby and Co were about four. (Note: She was gonna be a creepslayer and hang with the Acoridians a lot!) Even my latest Fic, A Safe Place started because I asked ‘What if” about Changling Families one night. That’s why it’s all the same characters and relationships. And I have several versions about what could happen if I kill off a couple of the major characters. I even toyed with letting several villains live. There were also several song fics that obviously went nowhere.

My Dr Who fic has a couple of alternate versions, too. I might write some of them some day but the biggest one is one where Lucy isn’t adopted but conceived during Genesis of the Daleks in a Kaled experiment. This baby was made by Davros using the Doctor and Sarah Jane’s DNA and, from there the plot was very similar but with a pregnancy instead of a baby. The baby was born at the end of Seeds of Doom.

As far as original works go, there are fifteen versions of Little Homestead. Most have different locations, years, and character names. Three are fanfics for Harry Potter (Snape and Lily), X-Men (Wolverine’s daughter and Nightcrawler), and Avengers (Hulk’s niece and Loki) each. The very first version was BURNED! I even had one version where Lu and Al DIDN’T END UP TOGETHER! There are versions where certain characters I love and adore now were evil. Tolly has alternated between being her brother, her uncle, and even her grandfather. Elli has changed species and Breed before ending up where he is and he didn’t even have a name until version number 10. That was also when Lu got her final name. Liz got hers in version 11 and Al and Tolly wouldn’t get final names until version 12. The earliest versions were SONG FICS! There was one version where they lived in a van down by the river. No joke. They lived in a van, traveled the country, and wrote poetry. This one also saw them living in Pompeii for a time and in Egypt.

Vinnie was my graduate student some years ago, and I’ve heard him lead this song with just a few voices. It works well that way in addition to the full choir heard here. I like it both ways. The choir here is from North Central University where Dr. Vinnie teaches.
