Tutorial: Simple Carousel without using <input>
Hello everyone!
I always wanted to create a Carousel-based theme, upon researching, I found yeoli-thm‘s tutorial (link is at the demo) but I had a difficulty in understanding it as I am not a huge fan of <input>. Luckily, I managed to create a simpler version of the carousel without using <input>.
Here's the result:
Tumblr media
Preview
By having this result, you can create your very own pages and all-in-one themes! The base code will be provided in the demo but if you want to learn how to create this from scratch, please do read this till the end!
IMPORTANT!:
Please like and/or reblog this post if you like this tutorial. If you intend of using this code as a based code, you are required to mention me in your theme post.
This tutorial consists of four aspects:
General styling
Basic Container
Navigation
Carousel
The concept of creating a carousel derives from my smooth scrolling tutorial. If you haven’t check that out, I highly recommend for you check it out.
General Styling
1. Firstly, you need to add the basic code for your carousel. You can retrieve it from this site.
2. Add the universal selector at the style/CSS area:
/*GENERAL STYLING*/ *{ margin:0; box-sizing: border-box; scroll-behavior: smooth; }
It is pertinent to add scroll-behavior:smooth. This is to create a smooth scrolling effect.
3. Once you're done with it, you can create a basic styling for the body, fonts, etc at the style/css area. In my demo, I made a basic styling of the body, paragraph, title, and scrollbar. Example can be seen as follow:
/*BODY AND FONTS*/ body{ background: rgb(248,248,255); background-image: linear-gradient(180deg, rgba(248,248,255,1) 0%, rgba(223,223,255,1) 50%); font-family:geo sans light; text-align:justify; line-height:150%; } @font-face { font-family: geo sans light; src: url(https://static.tumblr.com/v6akjgz/MQbqf9ocl/geosanslight.ttf); } p{ margin-bottom:2rem; } h1{ font-family:vintage fair; text-align:center; color:#1f1b1b; text-shadow:-1px 0 black; font-weight:300; margin-bottom:1rem; line-height:1.15; } @font-face { font-family:vintage fair; src: url(https://static.tumblr.com/v6akjgz/SNhqfaujo/vintage_fair.ttf); } /*SCROLLBAR*/ ::-webkit-scrollbar { width: 18px; height: 18px; } ::-webkit-scrollbar-track { border: 8px solid #fff; background-color: rgba(0,0,0,.05); } ::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb { background-color: #acacff; border: 8px solid #fff; }
NOTE!: There's no need for you to copy and paste the above code. You can always edit it or create other designs that you like to add.
Basic Container
A basic container is a place where you'll be adding the carousel. You can design it however you want in the style/CSS area but at the most basic, you can style it this way:
/*BASIC CONTAINER*/ .content{ /*Basic*/ width: 50%; height: 60%; /*Position*/ position: fixed; top: 50%; left: 50%; transform: translate(-50%, -50%); /*Important*/ overflow: hidden; /*Design*/ background-color:lightblue; border-radius: 5px; border: 1px solid rgb(58, 2, 58); }
Please do take note that this is one of the many ways of creating the basic container. If you know your ways in CSS, you can style it however you want!
IMPORTANT: It is very important for you to add overflow:hidden;. Without this, it will cause the scrollbar to appear and make it less pleasing to see.
For the HTML area, add the following code:
<!--CONTENT--> <div class="content"> <!---THIS IS WHERE THE CODE FOR CAROUSEL WOULD BE SITUATED AT--> </div>
By now, if you click [Update Preview] and [Save], you will now see the container on your page.
Navigation
Navigation is the place where all the links to the section will be wrapped in.
1. Add the code below /body.
<!--NAVIGATION--> <div class="contentlink"> <ul> <li><a href="#partone">First</a> <li><a href="#parttwo">Second</a></li> <li><a href="#partthree">Third</a></li> <li><a href="#partfour">Fourth</a></li> </ul> </div>
2. After that, you are required to style it at the CSS/style are (preferably below the content). The most basic ways to do it is by doing it this way:
/*NAVIGATION*/ .contentlink{ width:5rem; height:10rem; position:fixed; top:30%; right:10%; } .contentlink ul{ list-style-type: none; padding:0; } .contentlink li{ background-color:ghostwhite; border:1px solid lightblue; border-radius: 5px; display: block; margin-bottom: 1rem; padding:1rem; text-align: center; } .contentlink li a{ text-decoration: none; color:rgb(24, 91, 136); transition: 0.25s ease-in; } .contentlink li a:hover{ color: midnightblue; font-weight: 600; transition: 0.25s ease-out; }
So let me explain one-by-one what's the function of each selector:
.contentlink: This is the wrapper for all the navigation links for the carousel.
.contentlink ul: This is the wrapper for the list. Since we don't want any bullets nor padding/indents, it is essential for us to set the list-style-type and padding to none and 0 respectively.
.contentlink li a & .contentlink li a:hover: These are essential to customize the link.
Take Note!
If you are the kind of person who focuses on accessibility, this type of code may not suit your needs. So, you may need to modify both the HTML and CSS code.
Again, this is one of the many ways of styling the navigation section. If you know your ways in CSS and HTML, you can always modify it however you like.
The number of navigation sections does not necessarily be four. It can be two or even six if you like! So, add/remove the link that suits your need.
If you intend to create an effect where whenever you click the section, it will show an indication to it, I would say that it may not be possible to do so as it requires input.
By now, you will see that everything is starting to come up to life. But if you click the button, you'll see that it won't move to another section. This is because we have yet to create the content section.
Carousel
This is where the content of each section lies. Firstly, you need to add the code inside the the div class="content" :
<!--CAROUSEL--> <div class="default" id="partone"> <!-- YOUR CONTENT--> </div> <div class="default" id="parttwo"> <!-- YOUR CONTENT--> </div> <div class="default" id="partthree"> <!-- YOUR CONTENT--> </div> <div class="default" id="partfour"> <!-- YOUR CONTENT--> </div>
Take note!:
class="default" is where you uniformize all the settings to be the same instead of rewriting the same setting in each id
partone, parttwo, etc represents the 'section for the link'. If you refer back tp the navigation above, you'll see that the link/href name is the same as this section. You may change the name to whatever you want to. However, you need to ensure that you also do the same with the link in the navigation area.
Now that you done with this, you can customize default and/or the sections at the css/style area. This is what I did for it:
.default{ width: 100%; height: 100%; overflow: auto; padding:2rem; } .default a{ color:rgb(58, 2, 58); text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } .default a:hover{ text-decoration:underline; font-weight:normal; } .default img{ width:100%; margin-bottom:1rem; margin-top:0.5rem; }    #partone{        background: rgb(248,248,255);        background: linear-gradient(180deg, rgba(248,248,255,1) 0%, rgba(223,223,255,1) 50%);    }    #parttwo{        background: rgb(223,223,255);        background: linear-gradient(180deg, rgba(223,223,255,1) 0%, rgba(197,197,255,1) 50%);    }    #partthree{        background: rgb(197,197,255);        background: linear-gradient(180deg, rgba(197,197,255,1) 0%, rgba(172,172,255,1) 50%);    }    #partfour{        background: rgb(172,172,255);        background: linear-gradient(180deg, rgba(172,172,255,1) 0%, rgba(134,134,254,1) 50%);    }
Take note!
If you want to uniformize everything (ie not wanting each section to have a different background-color/image), you can simply remove #partone all down to #partfour.
It is important to set the width and height to 100%. This is to ensure that your section will have its own section.
Set the overflow to auto. This is to allow the carousel to scroll in case if the contents overflow.
With that, you’re done! Please take note that what I’m sharing with you is just an idea of how to create a carousel effect using CSS and HTML. There are myriads of ways of creating this design as long as you follow the said concept:
Set your scroll behavior to smooth.
For the basic container, make sure that overflow is set to hidden.
For the navigation, make sure that the link is set to #THE NAME OF THE SELECTOR.
For the carousel, make sure that height and width are set to 100% + overflow is set to auto.
For each carousel, make sure its id is the same as the navigation.
All the best!

Greedy Landlord went one step too far.
So my first post here. Sorry it is long, but I think it has just the right detail to follow.
My story appears to match many here in that a person in the wrong breaking the law continues to take bolder actions to the point where it is in such excess that it causes the whole situation to blow up in his face.
Background:
College student living in a college city. Lived in the dorms first year, then in an apartment in the next years. In our college town/city you had to pay a “finder’s fee” to the current tenant to move in. This was essentially paying them their deposit when you moved in, as there was not any formal rental contract. There were literally flyers up listing apartments with rent and the “finder’s fee” on campus. So this was standard practice.
Anyway, a buddy and I moved into ONE apartment middle of our 2nd year, in a triplex where 2 of the 3 roommates had moved (all 3 in one of the apartments). The 3rd guy had been living there for a number of years (had done undergrad and grad school there) and was the contact point for the landlord. We paid him and he paid the full rent. Note that this was not a sublet, just that we paid in total in one check (this is important).
So our 3rd roommate moves (graduates) and hands over the utilities, landlord info, etc. to me to handle before the start of summer. He had gone through a few landlords over this time and has not had a new lease/contract for years. So I take over and pay the bills during the summer. I became the POC, utilities in my name (important later for legal standing) and I was paying the rent (also important). Note you were stuck paying summer rent to keep a good apartment close to campus.
So we paid for the apartment for the summer.
Start of the Chess Match:
So Fall hits and school starts. We get a call for the landlord. He says he didn’t know anything about us and wanted us out. If we pay more rent, we can stay. So our rent goes up from $750 to $900 with 10 days verbal notice.
So we suck it up since we can’t move now (too late) and we paid all summer just to have the place. And the extra was not that bad. Keep in mind this was when minimum was $3.25/hr, so $150 is still a hit for 3 poor college students. Yes this is from a while ago.
So then as the semester gets to an end the landlord then decides he wants to raise the rent to like $1,500 or $2,000 or he will evict us. He gives us 30 days notice to get out over Christmas break if we will not pay. None of us could cover that amount, 2X - 3X where we started – we were all on financial aid.
Well, after talking to some people, we find out we should look into the Rent Control Laws.
Check:
Well, guess who has not properly registered or followed any rent control laws? Yep, this landlord. So we spend $500 on a lawyer and end up going to “Rent Control Court”.
Guess what the Rent Control Board hates. Yep, greedy landlords that clearly break all the laws.
Coming out of this hearing, we win BIG. Due to the rent check/utility billing, we are found to be tenants even though we do not have a written contract (that was our biggest worry on our claim). Landlord is punished for not being registered or in compliance for years (well really at all). So our rent is reduced to the ORIGINAL rent control amount. And, it is RETROACTIVE. So our rent becomes $300 from the day we moved in. Oh, and we cannot be evicted just because the landlord feels like it.
So doing the math, he owed us $6K in over charges for the past year, and would only collect 30% of the current rate going forward. And of course he also had a bunch of fines to pay the board. I don’t remember but I think it was more than what he owed us.
So our new rent of $300 gets paid into an escrow account. It will get released once he pays the fines and us our $6K. Well like 6 months go by and I don’t think he paid the fines. He did not pay us. And he is not collecting rent.
Finger still on the King:
But he is not done yet. Obviously renting any of the other units will be a problem for him rent wise. So he then decides to play “by the rules” and serve an eviction notice for us based on one of the permissible rules (He is moving into the unit/taking it off the market).
We know it is total BS, but it’s in the rules. We can call him on it, but then we will start spending $s on a lawyer battle he can outlast us on. He has money and is losing money every day we are there. So we propose a compromise.
And the King Falls:
We “settle out of court”. He agrees to a one year lease with us at $300/month. We will move out in a year (end of school/graduation for all 3 of us). He also signs over the escrow account to us and waives all owed rent to date.
In the end, we saved $16K. It was glorious. And we got 100% of our deposit (“finder’s fee”) as part of our settlement agreement. And we stayed until graduation.
Oh, and he did not rent out the other unit during this time, so he was out an additional $10K - $15K.
Keep in mind this was an investment property, so I assume the property value dropped for the reduced income.
Edit: Just looked up property history on Zillow, and 3 years after this occurred the tri-plex sold for $300K. So the rent collected from the units would have covered a mortgage so he just wanted to print money.
TL;DR: Greedy landlord tried to screw poor college students on rent. Instead not only do students come out $16K ahead, landlord loses $30K due to Rent Control Violations.

RECENT NEWS, RESOURCES & STUDIES, June 2019
Tumblr media
Welcome to my latest summary of recent news, resources & studies including search, analytics, content marketing, social media & ecommerce! This covers articles I came across from May 31 to June 21, although some may be older than that.
(Unfortunately, a few of this edition’s entries were lost somehow, & I could only remember one of the missing, so if you know of an article/post that should be included, please let me know, & the piece will be added here as well as to the next post.)
My busy few months are now mostly over, so I will have more time to get working on this Tumblr, new blog posts & the new forum I want to start; expect more frequent updates starting in July.
TOP NEWS & ARTICLES
Shopify is going to run fulfillment centres for its US customers within the next 2 years. “Right now Shopify will offer early access for merchants who ship between 10 and 10,000 items per day, and by the end of the year the company aims to offer two-day shipping to 99 per cent of the United States.” They announced other plans at the same time, including better shop tools.
If you have your own website, conversion rate optimization is something you should be looking at. Why? Because “[a] simple tweak on a landing page can double or even 10x that page’s conversion rate” which can be much easier to do than doubling your traffic. [Note that this is not a short article; it’s a full guide.]
Matching searcher intent is a crucial part of great rankings. This long article tells you pretty much everything you need to know on making that happen with your content, with real examples for their site.
Mary Meeker released her annual internet trends report; shorter summary here. “If you're looking to connect with the next generation, you should be maintaining at least some awareness of gaming culture, which is where attention is increasingly shifting.” “Some 51 percent of the world — 3.8 billion people — were internet users last year, up from 49 percent (3.6 billion) in 2017...E-commerce is now 15 percent of retail sales. Its growth has slowed — up 12.4 percent in Q1 compared with a year earlier — but still towers over growth in regular retail, which was just 2 percent in Q1...Customer acquisition costs — the marketing spending necessary to attract each new customer — is going up.
ETSY NEWS
Etsy retired several of its Support/Help email addresses, including [email protected], all without any official announcement.
You can now link photos to variations - but only with one variation, not both.
Etsy’s annual report for 2018 is out; I didn’t see much new here, but if you catch something, please leave a comment or send me an email so I can add it to this summary. [They actually mentioned “abilities” in their list of things they accept diverse ranges of, but as usual, they only give any details about gender, race/ethnicity and sexual orientation. Disability is invisible for them.]
A new bunch of US states will have state taxes charged for online sales as of July 1.
Ryan Scott will be Etsy’s new Chief Marketing Officer as of June 24.
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES
Google broke with tradition & decided to warn SEOs about the core search algorithm update that started rolling out on Monday June 3 and ended on the 8th. There are multiple reports of some UK news companies taking a hard hit while others picked up visibility. It’s still too early for much comprehensive analysis, but here is a summary and another more recent one.
At the same time, Google also rolled out an update that increases site diversity in search results, often limiting each website to 2 entries in Google’s top pages. Think of it as Google's approach to “clumping”. They insist it is separate from the core algorithm update. Early analysis finds that it didn't change much for most searches.
Websites sometimes rely too much on Google traffic, which is dangerous whenever they change something (i.e., daily). Here are 5 ways to make your site/pages more resistant to algorithm updates.
Most decent SEO tools cost some money to get the full value, but here is a list of 55 free tools including keyword research, stats, linking, and technical tools. (Some have paid versions as well, but just ignore what you don’t need.)
SEO sometimes requires stating the obvious; check out this tweet with a graphic from an SEO conference.
Rand Fishkin did a major review of clicks from Google search, & found that nearly 50% of US google searches result in a click (often questions such as weather, or spelling). Only 45% led to clicks on non-paid links, & non-Google companies. But “for every click on a paid result in Google, there are 11.6 clicks to organic results. SEO is far from dead.” Search Engine Land did a TL;DR (too long; didn’t read) summary here.
Fishkin also has some good insights on making a profit through SEO. [video and full transcript] I think the point about having a strong profit margin is really important - it is going to get more expensive to sell online as time goes on. Etsy is not the only provider trying to squeeze more pennies out of its customers. (Fishkin’s whole push lately is that you must be a known brand to survive; I am reserving judgement on that for the moment.)
Most blogs haven’t done their SEO correctly, but you can fix that. [video & full transcript]
Hate it when your site/business gets mentioned online, but they don’t link to you? There are ways to get other companies to link to you.
The latest Google mobile search redesign has folks pitching fits about how ads now look like organic search results. For your own website & other sites where it is possible, make sure you have a favicon that stands out from paid ads. [If you Google “CindyLouWho2″ on mobile, my blue fossil coral avi shows for my website & this Tumblr blog.]
Voice search isn’t taking off like people thought it would, although around 30% of Americans use virtual assistants regularly.
Is audio SEO going to be a thing? Dr. Pete looks at Google’s decision to post podcasts in search results.
CONTENT MARKETING & SOCIAL MEDIA (includes blogging & emails)
Facebook announced its move into cryptocurrency with Libra, which will launch in 2020.
Contrary to some reports, it seems that fewer people are using Facebook regularly. While time spent on FB drops, Instagram in particular is seeing more interaction.
Getting the right image sizes and dimensions is really important for each platform; here is an infographic on all image sizes for Facebook.
“[T]he right time for you to post on Facebook will be different than the right time for someone else to post on Facebook.” A summary of multiple studies on the topic, with tips on using your Facebook Analytics to narrow this down for your business.
After banning mass messaging earlier this year, WhatsApp is prohibiting sending newsletters through the app as of December.
A decent guide on using Twitter for your business. “...tweets with images get 150% more retweets”.
Thinking of running a Twitter chat? Here’s a complete guide, including Hootsuite templates.
You can get new content ideas from Reddit. “Reddit.com saw 542 million visitors in March 2019 alone.”
Pinterest is expanding its shopping program, now called Pinterest Partners, to provide more shopping opportunities on the site.
A study of the 500 top-followed Pinterest accounts shows that home decor is most popular among influencer topics. [infographic with text.]
Short video platform TikTok is still showing rapid growth. “Digital wellbeing is more important than it has ever been. Since tech companies started optimising for user engagement, the user is unable to escape the app. You will always feel dissatisfied when you close the app, because the notifications keep on coming and the content never seems to end. To us it seems, TikTok has taken this idea to another level and built the user experience to deliberately create addiction.“
ONLINE ADVERTISING (SEARCH ENGINES, SOCIAL MEDIA, & OTHERS)
Using Google Ads for your website? Make sure you avoid these 7 common mistakes.
Google now allows you to target people who are “regularly in your target locations” - but it doesn’t really define how they calculate that.
Instagram Shopping is most popular with younger people (at least in the UK).
Good tips on improving your Amazon ad effectiveness, especially cost-effectiveness.
Some tips on Microsoft Audience ads, and how to get the most out of them. It includes some good general tips, like looking at your profit margin.
Facebook produced an infographic on how to best create FB ads, especially, for mobile.
STATS, DATA, OTHER TRACKING
Google has purchased analytics company Looker; Etsy uses the platform already.
The Google Search Console is now giving users 90 days of data for some reports.
Here’s a new WordPress plugin that tracks clicks on pdfs on your site through Google Analytics.
ECOMMERCE NEWS, IDEAS, TRENDS
Paypal has developed “a customizable e-commerce platform”.
Amazon has extended 1-day Prime delivery. Their ability to do that largely depends on how they are taking control of the shipping methods used, moving away from using other big companies.
Amazon closed Spark, its social media competitor, and it redirects to a page of customer-curated collections.
Some Goodwill stores are now selling thrift items on online platform OfferUp.
Opinion article: is feature-driven retail preventing people from buying?
BUSINESS & CONSUMER STUDIES, STATS & REPORTS; SOCIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY, CUSTOMER SERVICE
Human brains like stories, which is why you should use them in your marketing. “Stories do another thing: They trigger the release of this neurochemical called oxytocin, which is known in some circles as the love drug. About 10 years ago, all we really knew about oxytocin is that it’s released when, say, a mother is with her baby. But what we’ve discovered since then, through the work of neuroscientists like Dr. Paul Zak, is that stories trigger the release of oxytocin in much the same way.”
Sell luxury goods? The market is changing as younger people make up a larger chunk of the core. Millennials will make up 50% of the market by 2025. The article has some interesting stats on the luxury resale market: “Overall 45% of true-luxury consumers participated in the second-hand luxury market, and more than one-fourth (26%) have bought pre-owned goods”  which is a trend some luxury vintage sellers might want to watch.
Generation Z prefers personalized content & isn’t as worried about privacy as older generations.
US adults now spend more time on mobile devices than they do watching tv. Much of that time is spent on mobile apps instead of browsers, & audio (podcasts & music streaming, mostly) accounts for a large chunk of time spent.
US retail sales grew by half a percent in May, less than predicted.
MISCELLANEOUS
As the US looks at starting an antitrust case against Google, articles are reminding the government what other countries found, and what they should be looking at now. Businesses big & small have filed complaints.
The Google Cloud outage on June 2 that took down YouTube, Snapchat and Shopify among other sites points to the need for everyone to have a backup system. [Remember, Etsy is also moving all functions to Google’s cloud.]
Sick of writing product descriptions? Imagine if it was your full-time job, and you didn’t have any hand in making or curating the products.

If you looking on the internet a Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.1 DMG Without app store So, you come to the right place now a day hares with you an El Capitan download dmg file OS upgrade is highly recommended is the latest release from OS X. it has been designed to improve the performance and usability of OS X Apple Inc. Today am very excited to share how to free download a full version without an app store all detail and features to describe below step by step follow the instruction.
Earlier this week I was very excited to release OS X El Capitan. The OS upgrade is highly recommended as it significantly increases Macs ‘ performance (which can run Yosemite). However, I did not have a pleasant experience in the upgrade process. I have been able to upgrade my Mac only a few hours ago. This was six times in a row after the MAS download and I wasted 15 GB data on a one-time 6.08 GB download.
Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Overview
There are many reasons for this radical decision. You decided to download an older version of Mac OS X. Initially, some applications might not (or just crash) work properly on newer operating systems. You might also have realized that the performance of your Mac fell immediately after the last update. Last but not least, if you want to run a parallel version of Mac OS X on a virtual machine, it will take you to install the file of an older Mac OS X in a functional manner.
The 2015 release Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 aims primarily at providing greater safety, efficiency, and reliability. This Mac OS X release is a full package for stability, privacy, performance and file search simultaneously. Many technological improvements along with improved tweaks are made and the desktop is more smartly organized. This is a very well equipped release with many attractive characteristics such as the split view for the screens to be divided as needed. Mac OS X El Captian 10.11.6 is designed to make many bugs fixes possible in addition to dependency and security.
There are a lot of improvements to OS X El Capitan 10.11.1, such as improved installer reliability when upgrading to OS X El Capitan. Microsoft Office 2016 compatibility was also significantly improved. The update also solved an issue that prevented messages and mailboxes from being displayed in the mail. The reliability of VoiceOver has also been greatly improved. With full Unicode 7.0 and 8.0 support, over 150 emoji characters were added. The problem has also been resolved that prevented the proper operation of Audio Unit plugins. Was there a problem with JPEG images in the previous version that appears in the preview in grey and green? And in this update, this problem was fixed. you can also check out the Logic Pro X Free.

Mac OS El Capitan 10.11.1 DMG Free Download
So, you’ve decided to download an older version of Mac OS X. There are many reasons that could point you to this radical decision. To begin with, some of your apps may not be working properly (or simply crash) on newer operating systems. Also, you may have noticed your Mac’s performance went down right after the last update. Finally, if you want to run a parallel copy of Mac OS X on a virtual machine, you too will need a working installation file of an older Mac OS X. Further down we’ll explain where to get one and what problems you may face down the road.
A list of all Mac OS X versions
We’ll be repeatedly referring to these Apple OS versions below, so it’s good to know the basic macOS timeline.

STEP 1. Prepare your Mac for installation
Tumblr media
Given your Mac isn’t new and is filled with data, you will probably need enough free space on your Mac. This includes not just space for the OS itself but also space for other applications and your user data. One more argument is that the free space on your disk translates into virtual memory so your apps have “fuel” to operate on. The chart below tells you how much free space is needed.
Note, that it is recommended that you install OS on a clean drive. Next, you will need enough disk space available, for example, to create Recovery Partition. Here are some ideas to free up space on your drive:
Uninstall large unused apps
Empty Trash Bin and Downloads
Locate the biggest files on your computer:
Go to Finder > All My Files > Arrange by size Then you can move your space hoggers onto an external drive or a cloud storage. If you aren’t comfortable with cleaning the Mac manually, there are some nice automatic “room cleaners”. Our favorite is CleanMyMac as it’s most simple to use of all. It deletes system junk, old broken apps, and the rest of hidden junk on your drive.

STEP 2. Get a copy of Mac OS X download
Normally, it is assumed that updating OS is a one-way road. That’s why going back to a past Apple OS version is problematic. The main challenge is to download the OS installation file itself, because your Mac may already be running a newer version. If you succeed in downloading the OS installation, your next step is to create a bootable USB or DVD and then reinstall the OS on your computer.
How to download older Mac OS X versions via the App Store
If you once had purchased an old version of Mac OS X from the App Store, open it and go to the Purchased tab. There you’ll find all the installers you can download. However, it doesn’t always work that way. The purchased section lists only those operating systems that you had downloaded in the past. But here is the path to check it:
Click the App Store icon.
Click Purchases in the top menu.
Scroll down to find the preferred OS X version.
Click Download.
Free Download Mac Os X 10.4
This method allows you to download Mavericks and Yosemite by logging with your Apple ID — only if you previously downloaded them from the Mac App Store.
Without App Store: Download Mac OS version as Apple Developer
If you are signed with an Apple Developer account, you can get access to products that are no longer listed on the App Store. If you desperately need a lower OS X version build, consider creating a new Developer account among other options. The membership cost is $99/year and provides a bunch of perks unavailable to ordinary users.
Nevertheless, keep in mind that if you visit developer.apple.com/downloads, you can only find 10.3-10.6 OS X operating systems there. Newer versions are not available because starting Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.7, the App Store has become the only source of updating Apple OS versions.
Purchase an older version of Mac operating system
You can purchase a boxed or email version of past Mac OS X directly from Apple. Both will cost you around $20. For the reason of being rather antiquated, Snow Leopard and earlier Apple versions can only be installed from DVD.
Buy a boxed edition of Snow Leopard 10.6 Get an email copy of Lion 10.7 Get an email copy of Mountain Lion 10.8
The email edition comes with a special download code you can use for the Mac App Store. Note, that to install the Lion or Mountain Lion, your Mac needs to be running Snow Leopard so you can install the newer OS on top of it.
How to get macOS El Capitan download
If you are wondering if you can run El Capitan on an older Mac, rejoice as it’s possible too. But before your Mac can run El Capitan it has to be updated to OS X 10.6.8. So, here are main steps you should take:
1. Install Snow Leopard from install DVD. 2. Update to 10.6.8 using Software Update. 3. Download El Capitan here.
“I can’t download an old version of Mac OS X”
If you have a newer Mac, there is no physical option to install Mac OS versions older than your current Mac model. For instance, if your MacBook was released in 2014, don’t expect it to run any OS released prior of that time, because older Apple OS versions simply do not include hardware drivers for your Mac.
But as it often happens, workarounds are possible. There is still a chance to download the installation file if you have an access to a Mac (or virtual machine) running that operating system. For example, to get an installer for Lion, you may ask a friend who has Lion-operated Mac or, once again, set up a virtual machine running Lion. Then you will need to prepare an external drive to download the installation file using OS X Utilities.
After you’ve completed the download, the installer should launch automatically, but you can click Cancel and copy the file you need. Below is the detailed instruction how to do it.
STEP 3. Install older OS X onto an external drive
The following method allows you to download Mac OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks.
Download Mac Os X Mavericks Iso
Start your Mac holding down Command + R.
Prepare a clean external drive (at least 10 GB of storage).
Within OS X Utilities, choose Reinstall OS X.
Select external drive as a source.
Enter your Apple ID.
Now the OS should start downloading automatically onto the external drive. After the download is complete, your Mac will prompt you to do a restart, but at this point, you should completely shut it down. Now that the installation file is “captured” onto your external drive, you can reinstall the OS, this time running the file on your Mac.
Boot your Mac from your standard drive.
Connect the external drive.
Go to external drive > OS X Install Data.
https://foxde503.tumblr.com/post/657205584848945152/dj-software-mac-free-download-full-version. Locate InstallESD.dmg disk image file — this is the file you need to reinstall Lion OS X. The same steps are valid for Mountain Lion and Mavericks.

How to downgrade a Mac running later macOS versions
If your Mac runs macOS Sierra 10.12 or macOS High Sierra 10.13, it is possible to revert it to the previous system if you are not satisfied with the experience. You can do it either with Time Machine or by creating a bootable USB or external drive. Instruction to downgrade from macOS Sierra

Before you do it, the best advice is to back your Mac up so your most important files stay intact. In addition to that, it makes sense to clean up your Mac from old system junk files and application leftovers. The easiest way to do it is to run CleanMyMac X on your machine (download it for free here).
Visit your local Apple Store to download older OS X version
If none of the options to get older OS X worked, pay a visit to nearest local Apple Store. They should have image installations going back to OS Leopard and earlier. You can also ask their assistance to create a bootable USB drive with the installation file. So here you are. We hope this article has helped you to download an old version of Mac OS X. Testing the New Piezography Ultra HD Matte Black
The second “small-batch” of the new Piezography Pro inks are now available, and with it the new Piezography Ultra HD Matte Black is available for individual sale to use with existing K6 and K7 ink sets. The sales and social media posts about the new ink was reported to have a Dmax of about 1.8, which is incredible for unpolarized measurements from matte inkjet prints, but there haven’t been any outside tests or reviews of the new ink (as far as I have searched). I was eager to load it up and make a few tests myself and compare it to some of the existing matte black inks out there (I haven’t tested HP or Canon inks with QTR yet so these tests were limited to most common QTR compatible inks)
I also should first not that around the time the PiezoPro inks were coming out I created my own custom K5+LcLmY set for specialized toning setups. I invested a lot of time and energy building different toning profiles and it didn’t make sense to switch the printer used in these tests over to the dual quad PiezoPro inkset. I am planning on installing that in a partially clogged 9900 when I get around to swapping out the capping station and damper assembly—that is a whole other situation….
Back to the 3880. Before switching the Shade 1 MK cartridge in my current setup I did a quick test comparing several other existing carbon matte black inks to the new Piezography Pro Ultra HD Matte Black.  You can read about some testing I did a few years ago with the existing Piezography Shade 1 Matte Black and Eboni Matte Black (version 1) in this post Comparing Cone Piezography Shade 1 and MIS Ebony Shade 1. This time around I set out to test the Original Epson UltraChome MK from the x800-x880, the new HD Matte Black in the P800 (and all the other new Sure Color series printers), and the STS MK I have been using in the small format 1430 I use for other kinds of testing (the STS MK didn’t make it into the 3880).
Making the Switch
How you actually swap out the cartridges and inks will depend somewhat on your printer model. The small format printers like the 1430 or 2880 that do not have ink lines will only require swapping out the refillable MK cartridge and a quick head cleaning procedure and nozzle check to make sure the ink is flowing properly.
The larger format printers will take more time to clear the old ink from the lines, and the best way to clear them is to print an ink purge sheet from using QuadToneRIP Calibration Mode. This is especially true for the x990 printers where the old method of using 2-3 power cleaning cycles is not recommended (and you are throwing away ink from all 10 channels rather than just the one you are switching out.) In my case, I haven’t printed with the 3880 in a few weeks and wanted to clear out any sedimentation in the lines so I did one power clean cycle and the three 8x8 inch purge sheets seemed to do it.  (I measured the densities of each purge sheet at the top and bottom of the page and stopped after the density didn’t change between the last two sheets.)
Even after only one power cleaning and part-way through printing the first 8x8 black channel purge sheet it was obvious new new black was a lot denser. How much denser? That is what spectrophotometers and spreadsheets are for…
As soon as I got the old Epson MK cleared from the lines I wanted to do a quick relinearization of some existing curves I had for the K5 inkset just to see what impact the new black had on a quick test print. The shadows and deep blacks in the print were denser, but the relinearization wasn’t as smooth as I would like (as in it wasn’t perfect) and I wanted to see what this ink could really do with my QuadToneProfiler tools. The other benefit of starting from scratch is that you can see exactly where the sweet spot in the ink limit and carefully define how evenly each of the diluted inks are distributed throughout the scale.
It is a welcome surprise to see this new ink does not have the same “oily” reflectance the STS MK has, and does not get lighter when the maximum ink load passes its optimal level. This is a distinct difference from the STS MK which results in lower reflected densities as the ink limit increases, and, even when there is no measurable tonal reversal you will still often see a noticeable shift when the STS MK hits the 100% step. The nice thing is new Piezography Ultra HD MK continues to increase in density all the way to 95%-100% (although there might be little to actually be gained when setting the limit that high due to excessive bleed from such a high ink limit and the increased overlap of the Shade 2 ink. I actually did test this and I found that an overall K ink limit of 55 and a K Boost setting of 75-80 was producing a Dmax of 1.77-1.78, and there was no difference after manually setting the Dmax quad value in the black channel to 95%).
Testing the Four Matte Black Inks
Testing Methods
The tests were pretty simple in that they were just measurements of a 21-step grayscale using the K channel from each ink separation image. I used an average of four samples per patch for each ink. These prints were force-air dried for two minutes where I took and initial measurement, and the left to air dry for 24-36 hours before taking the final measurements used in the graphs. I usedHahnemühle Museum Etching to make these tests. There is a slight tooth to this paper, which in some cases could a result from increased random scattering of the light and densities appearing lower they actually are. A quick test of the UHDMK on Hahnemühle Photo Rag resulted in similar densities to the Museum Etching so I didn’t want to take the extra time to test multiple papers from the same manufacturer for this first round.
The Measurements
The new Piezography Ultra HD Matte Black is clearly the densest, closely followed by the new Epson MK used in the new Sure Color series printers. There is no current solution for using third party inks in the new Sure Color printers so those making prints with the UC K3 inks will be satisfied with the advance in the Epson Inks as far as Dmax goes. However, if you are able to use third party inks in refillable cartridges, there is no reason to use any other ink than the new Piezography UHDMK.
Measurements from a Linearized Custom Quad Curve
Looking at measurements from an ink separation image can be insightful, but the Dmax from the overlapping shades will usually not match what you set in the ink limit for the K channel. This is usually because of the additional overlap from the next lighter shade at the very end of the scale, and there needs to be a careful balance of getting the highest possible density while preventing excessive bleed, and a slightly lower density from overlap of the diluted gray inks. In the two Hahnemühle papers I tested I was able to maintain a Dmax of 1.77-1.78 (L* ~13.7) where all the other inks were the best to around a Dmax of about 1.65 (L* ~16.7). The best I was ever able to do with the STS MK was with Museo Portfolio Rag that maxed out at1.7 (L* ~15.45).
Creating Custom Quad Curves
If you do switch inks there are a few options you have for linearizing and profile making, and which one you choose will depend on how far you want to dive into the process, how much money you are willing to spend on it, and if you have the ability to measure your own printed targets.
QTR-Linearize-Quad($50 and included with the QTR license): If you do have the ability to measure your own targets you could use the built-in QTR-Linearize-Quad applet and a 21-step measurement file to get a decent general linearization without spending any additional money. This might be the least-best option because 21-steps are usually not enough to get the right amount of separation in the higher and lower densities from existing quad curves.
My QuadLin Service ($45): If you do not have the ability to measure your own printed target I offer an affordable service that will relinearize your existing curves. You print the standard 51-step target to me and I will make a linear and modified gamma-adjusted set of curves. I use my own error correction and linearization methods that produce prints that are indistinguishable from the Piezography methods (please note that will not make custom curves from the Piezography master curves).
My exclusive QuadToneProfiler Deluxe Edition and QuadLin curve creation tools ($50-$90): These Microsoft Excel-based tools allow you to make your own custom media settings using automated formulas, create smoother bezier-shaped master curves than the standard QTR methods create, and includes an advanced single-step linearization functions with real time quad curve previews (including built-in error correction tools for use with only 51-step measurements that do not rely on the QTR-Linearize-Quad app).
Custom Piezography Curves ($100 per profile)
The Piezography Professional Tools ($150 for a 1-year license)
No matter which linearization system you use the increased density of the new ink is a welcome addition to the advance in fine art black and white inked printing, and Jon Cone and all the folks at Cone Editions Press and Inkjetmall are owed a warm sense of gratitude for their continued commitment to pushing the state of the art.
About This Photograph
If you get my email newsletter you might remember that I spent some time out West this winter. Most of the trip was spent in and around Los Angeles for PhotoLA and doing press checks on the last 4 books in the Portfolios of Brett Weston Series. But in there I made some much-needed time to photograph in the Eastern Sierra and Death Valley.
This is one of the photographs I made with the Leica Monochrome on the last day of the trip before heading to the airport to teach a one-on-one workshop in the Midwest.
The last morning in the Owens Valley was the one of the best I've experienced in the nearly 20 years I have been traveling to the Eastern Sierra to photograph, and I stayed to photograph much longer than I should have which made for a stressful drive back to LAX to catch my flight out. I think it was worth it. This is one of the first photographs I printed with the new Ultra HD Matte Black ink and I think it really shows how the rich deep black enhances the feeling of the subtle midtone contrast while also allowing you to see deeper into the shadow around the edges of the arch. The smoothness of the K5 gray inks are crucial in separating the delicate clouds, and the added warmth of the toning inks gives a greater sense of depth than the Warn Neutral inks do on their own.
I am offering this photograph as a discounted example print until the end of April. Each one is printed on Hahnemühle Museum Etching (350gsm) and are offered in two sizes: 7x10 inches for $50 (discounted from $250) and 12x17 inches for $200 (discounted from $750). Mounting and framing is also offered for an additional charge.

How to Find a UCLA Apartment
I can’t recommend moving off the hill highly enough. The space you get in an apartment, the aesthetic, the price, the independence from campus, being surrounded by upperclassmen... it’s just the best. I wish I had done it sophomore year. Instead, I did it junior year, senior year, and fifth year, and then for one extra sixth year quarter I moved to Hollywood. More on that at the end.
I’ve seen a lot of younger students struggle with finding an apartment in Westwood, so I just wanted to share a few tips. Hope this helps!
1. Ask your older friends! They may be moving out of their places, or know people who are, or at least know some landlords or websites to point you towards. They may themselves be looking for someone to replace someone in their group too. This is your best bet.
2. Search online, like Rent Westwood and The Elliott Company (my two landlords) have their prices and availabilities listed online.
3. Check Facebook, the UCLA housing groups. I found a sublet this way and it was great.
4. Join an organization like UCLA Radio that has a whole Slack channel dedicated to sharing housing opportunities! Or if you’re in an organization you love, consider starting your own in-club housing network for people to share their housing opportunities and ISOs (“in search of”).
5. Literally walk around the neighborhoods and call the numbers listed to see their prices. This is probably the worst way, but if you’re desperate, sure.
It’s important to note: This shit starts earlier than you think! Like, there will be some people in last-minute housing changes in August, but typically the leases are signed in like, February-May. You can definitely start contacting landlords in January or February regarding a lease that would start in September. This is unique to Westwood, everything else in LA is like “available now!” There are a few “available now” situations in Westwood, but they’re usually the overpriced buildings. Look in advance! And start deciding in like December and January who you’re going to live with the following year!
My favorite street in the apartments (north of Wilshire) was Midvale. It’s beautiful, close to campus, often where the “cooler” (lmao) students live. Roebling is the most social street, a lot of Greek life people live there, followed by Landfair and Gayley. Ophir is cool, Levering is fine, Kelton is nice but getting far, and Veteran is cheap but a trek. Roebling is surprisingly close to campus and downtown Westwood, which is nice. I should note I have a preference for older apartments though, I think they’re charming and beautiful, rather than the new massive block-y apartments, and Midvale has a lot of those.
Some ballpark price ranges (per month) for apartments north of Wilshire, in 2019 anyways:
A single: $1000-$1500. Even if you have no budget, paying over $1500 is pretty absurd. If you can find one under $1000, thank the heavens. $1150 is probably average. At my old (beautiful) apartment on Midvale (471), there was one small single we had for $930 in 2018 and that was a steal. I had a friend who lived with an adult who had a rent-controlled apartment on Roebling and paid only $750 in 2018, so it is possible, although rare and a little weird.
A double: $700-$900. If you’re paying $700 for a double, that’s amazing. I paid $650 in 2017 for a weird double in Shutter Island (10966) on Roebling with big bedrooms and no living room. I paid $775 for a great double on Midvale (471) in 2019. If you’re paying over $900, that’s a bit steep but may be worth it if you can do it and if you’re in a beautiful place with your best friends.
A triple: $500-$700. I paid $550 for a big triple in my Midvale apartment 2018 (we all had full-sized beds). If you’re paying anything over $700 for a triple that’s kind of bullshit, in my opinion. But hey, prices go up every year, and if you’re with your best friends, do what you have to.
And then you’ll also be paying for groceries, which can range depending on how strict your budget is. I knew someone whose brother did it for $5/week, but I was averaging more like $50/week. Maybe that’s bad, I don’t know, I got a lot of produce and stuff. But that’s $200/month + let’s say $800/month on average, $1000/month, compared to $5500/quarter in the dorms?
I’ve noticed there’s usually a bell curve in terms of pricing. Studios and one-bedrooms are typically more expensive per person, then two- and three-bedrooms are the ideal in my opinion, and then once you get to four-bedroom or more nightmares it usually goes up again (and you all have to share one refrigerator and it can just be messy/drama).
If you can, I recommend staying north of Wilshire in that apartment area. It’s just where everyone is. That said, prices are usually cheaper south of Wilshire, and it’s not too far from campus, so it could be worth it for the price. The people I knew who lived south of Wilshire also seemed more independent, more removed from campus. Just maybe get a bike?
But also, at that point, you can start looking at options outside of Westwood. For my last quarter, I lived in Thai Town in Hollywood, and I loved it! It was actually easier to get to campus than walking, I just took the bus (the 2) straight down Sunset every day and it drops you off right at campus. My rent was $950 for a single bedroom, and a bus pass through UCLA (CTO) is free for a quarter and then not too expensive after. (Plus I met my boyfriend by getting out of the UCLA bubble!) If you do this, I just really recommend either having a car and/or checking the public transportation options before moving. Like, Mid-City is difficult to get to by public transit. Anywhere along Sunset, you’re golden. If you apply for a parking spot through UCLA, if you get it you’re set, if not I still recommend renting one from someone in the apartments, which you can usually find through UCLA Free & For Sale on Facebook. (Prices for a parking spot: $50-75/month for tandem, which isn’t ideal, or $75-$150/month for non-tandem.)
Regarding who to live with: There are going to be people who you absolutely love but who you won’t want to live with. They may be messier than you, more obsessively tidy than you, louder than you, more strict with noise than you... the list goes on. Before you move in, I suggest you fill out a spreadsheet like this one, or at least have a conversation following these guidelines:
 https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sZhJoeqQ_c0eMMSwkSLFRI-MISWEvXzP9q0bFQT4PFA/edit?usp=sharing
I know it’s a little over-the-top, but it’s helpful for communicating preferences before you run into problems. It would be even better if you looked these over before agreeing to move in together. I usually made it into a joke like, “I swear I won’t have any more insane requests after this one” and “it’s amazing I don’t have any Virgo placements.”
But also, fingers crossed that you’re super living-compatible with your best friends or whoever you want to live with! I’ve always had luck and been closest with my roommates, it’s a great opportunity to find a new best friend.
Regarding sublets: This one’s tricky. It’s illegal to have someone living in your house who’s not on the lease. Plenty of people end up subletting because they have a yearlong lease but want to be away for the summer (so they need someone), or they live in the dorms usually but want to stay for summer session (so they need a place). Similar situations for study abroads. I’ve done it a lot, but I have also gotten in (not awful) trouble for it once. Subletting really is a risk, not just because your landlord will get pissed (and possibly evict you!) if they find out, but also because your subletter can absolutely leave at any time with no legal repercussions and you’d be rushing to find someone else or pay the rent yourself. Or similarly, if you’re the subletter, you could be without a place to live if something goes wrong, they come back, etc. It’s doable and happens, but it’s not ideal at all. You could ask the landlord if they could do a lease transfer for the rest of summer, but it’s complicated and puts you on their radar if they say no. In sum: It’s a risk. Sublet it if you have to, but avoid it if you can.
Regarding pets: I had a cat for two years in no-pet apartments, and the landlords never found out. The cat never peed anywhere bad, etc, we got lucky. I don’t really recommend it, we probably should have gone the emotional support animal route, but it’s doable if you’re determined.
Best of luck! If you want any more advice, follow me on Instagram and DM me -- @ a s h l . 3 . y

BtT Light Novel Club Chapter 10.5: A 100-Novel Challenge & Q&A!
Tumblr media
Over the last year I have been getting quite a bit into light novels. This led to me making a New Year’s resolution at the start of 2019 to read at least 100 novel volumes in the year. For the purpose of this challenge, any kind of novel counts towards the 100, not just light novels; nevertheless, the vast majority of the novels I plan to read will be light novels, simply because there’s so many out there I still want to read. You can follow my progress in my Twitter thread here.
As of the time of writing this post, I have read 49 novels already, which puts me quite a bit ahead of pace. As such, I decided to hold a small Q&A about my novel reading project.
100 novels? That’s a lot!
Okay, so this isn’t really a question, but I bet many of you are wondering what it’s like to actually work on a goal like this.
The key is being intentional to read novels. There are times when I have to decide to read a novel rather than, say, play games or surf the Internet. Having an idea of what pace I should be reading at helps, too. To read 100 novels a year, I need to read a bit more than 8 novels a month, so with that in mind I have an idea of how far ahead or behind I am with my goal at any given point. If I’m ahead of pace (like I am right now) I might relax a bit and do some other things, but if I’m behind I know I need to be opening up a book.
The digital age helps things a lot; having books available on Kindle on my phone means I can pull my phone out and read a bit when I have some downtime in various places. That said, print books have their place too, specifically in places where my phone is not allowed…
Honestly, 100 novels is actually looking like a fairly low goal. At my current pace I could reach 120 novels by the end of the year, and if I put in some extra effort I could probably reach 150. But hey, it’s nice to have a relatively simple goal to start with. Maybe in 2020 I’ll bump up the goal.
Are you sticking with any particular series (or multiple series) to do this, or are you reading individual light novels?
To answer this question, I have to mention one other thing that’s been helping me with this goal: J-Novel Club’s membership and prepub system. If you check out my Twitter thread, you’ll notice that a lot of my novels are read as “prepubs from @jnovelclub”. These are usually listed before their e-books actually go on sale, so what are these about?
J-Novel Club has a membership program that, among other benefits, gives members access to “prepubs”. Before the e-book of a given novel is released, the book is translated and released weekly in 8 to 10 parts for members to read on their website. (They’re considered “prepubs” because they will undergo additional editing before the e-book release; members can even partake in this process by spotting typos/grammar mistakes and the like; also, the parts are taken down some time after the e-book is published.) This is a nice system for my purposes because having 1/8th of a novel to read every week helps break up and pace my reading in easy-to-manage chunks.
With this system I find myself following a handful of particular series. Other than that, I try to balance between continuing favorite series and starting new ones.
I also took questions about my thoughts about light novels in general, so here are some questions about those:
What got you into reading light novels?
I like reading novels in general; I find the novel to be a great medium for experiencing stories as I can go at my own pace through the story and ruminate on story events and characters. I enjoy how written prose allows for more detailed descriptions of how characters think and view everything around them. Also, it’s much easier to reread my favorite parts of a book than it is to do the same with other media like TV shows or games.
Of course, I also enjoy the sort of stories that come from anime, manga, and other “otaku media”. So light novels are pretty much the perfect intersection between my love of novels and my love of otaku media. That said, while I did read some light novels here and there in the past, what really got me started in this current light novel reading spree was back when I decided to try out the novel for In Another World With My Smartphone, the anime for which was something of a guilty pleasure; the first two volumes were only $1 each so I figured why not. I found myself enjoying the novels quite a bit more than the anime for the reasons I mentioned above, and the rest is history. Speaking of which…
Also, do you find they are better than watching anime, like when people compare reading the book is better than the movie? I’ve never been into light novels as it would take less time to just watch the anime, for me.
I basically answered this question above, but I must say that I believe that each medium has its own strengths and weaknesses and there are many things anime can do that a novel cannot. In an ideal world, every good light novel would have a great anime adaptation that fully adapts the story and brings a new perspective to the story using the tools unique to anime. Of course, the reality of anime adaptations is nowhere near that ideal, which leads into the next question…
What examples of LNs that were better than the anime? What are some cases where the anime adaptation was superior to the LNs?
Honestly, in the vast majority of cases I find LNs to be better than their anime adaptations. This is in part because I prefer reading in general to watching anime and in part because most adaptations don’t reach my favorite parts of a novel series. There are a few cases, though, where I like the anime more than the novel.
A big example would be Sound! Euphonium, which I read the novel of not too long ago. (Note: technically the novel is not a light novel, but more of a general young adult novel; notably, there are no illustrations.) While the novel wasn’t bad, the anime expanded on many things such as the relationship between Kumiko and Reina that add so much to the story. Also, it’s the sort of story that benefits hugely from having, you know, actual music.
A special mention goes to That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, for which I at least prefer the anime adaptation of the first volume (I have yet to read vol. 2 or beyond). The main reason being that the anime adaptation gives more interaction between Rimuru and Shizue, which makes the end-of-volume events more impactful. It’s not a huge change but it is a nice little addition.
Tumblr media
And sometimes it’s the little things that help make the biggest moments.
It helps that the above two instances gave plenty of time to adapt their novels; Sound! Euphonium took an entire season to cover one novel and Slime adapted the first volume in 8 episodes; this kept anything from feeling rushed. Anime being worse than the novel are often because the adaptation rushes things. The worst case of this is probably The Master of Ragnarok and Blesser of Einherjar. Sure, the original light novels weren’t anything special, but they had some interesting elements of incorporating modern knowledge into a historical past. The anime, though, crammed seven volumes of story into twelve episodes, glossing over some pretty significant backstory and worldbuilding elements, which turned it into a mess.
OK, here is a question: You sometimes see gals in anime that have purple hair, but the characters will describe her hair as “black”. Sup with that? Should we interpret purple hair to be black IRL?
For the record, this wasn’t actually asked about light novels, but it does come up in light novels too; for example, in Full Metal Panic!, main heroine Kaname is described as having black hair, but in the cover illustration (and in the anime) she has blue hair. Simply put, colorful hair makes a character more distinct and memorable. So yes, in most cases that take place in “our world, where a character has colorful hair you can assume their actual hair color is “normal”. Of course, if it takes place in a fantasy world, all bets are off…
Top ten LNs or LN series?
I think this is a nice way to finish off this Q&A session. Keep in mind, there are still plenty of LN series I have yet to read, as well as plenty of volumes to read in series I am reading. For this list, I am limiting it to series I have read at least two volumes of. You can almost certainly expect this list to change by the end of the year. Nevertheless, here are my top 10 LN series as of now. (Each entry includes the last volume I have read from that series.)
#10. Toradora! (vol. 3): I liked the anime of this one, and the relationship between Ryuji and Taiga is even better to read in book form. If you want to hear more thoughts, you can check out our Light Novel Club discussion on volume 1.
#9. Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?! (vol. 4): Honestly, this entry is really collectively for all of FUNA’s light novels; her other ones, I Shall Survive Using Potions! and Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World For My Retirement are also great, being hilarious adventures involving overpowered girls in another world who don’t quite realize how their powers are shaking up the world around them. Abilities Average takes the spot simply because it has the most volumes out that I’ve read.
#8. Invaders of the Rokujouma!? (vol. 14): The anime for this one was already surprisingly good, and the light novel goes beyond that to craft a story full of heart and some fascinating plot developments.
#7. Kokoro Connect (vol. 5): Another one for which I really liked the anime and now I get to read the light novel past where the anime ended. There’s so much more to it than just body-swapping and related phenomena; it’s a story about identity, relationships, and other sorts of psychological challenges life can throw at you.
#6. Infinite Dendrogram (vol. 5): I’d say more about this one but we’ve already covered two volumes of it in our Light Novel Club, so I’ll just say that things only get crazier from there.
#5. An Archdemon’s Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride (vol. 5): This is a super-adorable fantasy romance. The main duo have this awkwardly sweet dynamic going on, and there’s also some interesting developments in the background. This one also has a wonderful cast of supporting characters, and overall it’s just a really nice read.
#4. Outbreak Company (vol. 9): As mentioned when we covered the first volume last time in Light Novel Club, I really like how this one takes its story of taking otaku media to another world seriously, looking at the actual ramifications of its premise and how it affects the characters. Having a great cast of characters helps, too.
#3. Mixed Bathing in Another Dimension (vol. 5): …I am dead serious about this one. Yes, it’s a fanservicey story about a guy who goes to another world with a power that lets him bathe with girls… but it’s surprisingly wholesome, and the bathing scenes have something of a family feel to them, strangely enough. The surrounding story has some interesting developments and a solid sense of adventure, and stack that with seeing how his “bath” power develops and it’s actually quite in line with a lot of what I like to see in isekai stories.
#2. Log Horizon (vol. 4): I love the anime for this, and the light novel is holding up just as well. This one does a great job of blending in game elements to a living world, exploring all sorts of themes and showcasing not just straight up action but also high level strategizing. It has incredible worldbuilding and great characters, and overall I just love it.
#1. How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom (vol. 8): And here is my favorite light novel right now. In retrospect, the premise of this one isn’t anything special; what really gets me with Realist Hero is how well it executes that premise. It has a wonderful cast, plenty of interesting plotlines, some surprisingly good harem romance (and romance outside of the main character, too), and also a lot of heart to it; it’s as much a story about interpersonal relationships as it is about rebuilding a fantasy kingdom. While I may one day find a light novel better than it, for now Realist Hero is as close to everything I want in a light novel as I have found.
Thank you for joining me in this special Q&A session! In a few days we’ll have a proper Light Novel Club post on the last volume of True Tenchi Muyo!, with discussion from TWWK and our newest writer and light novel enthusiast, JeskaiAngel, so look forward to that. After that, I will announce the next light novel for discussion… and here’s a hint: it’s one of the titles in my top 10! Which one? You’ll have to wait and see…

Cakes aplenty! 🍰
I. Love. Dessert.
Tumblr media
And, from the bottom of my heart, I believe the Japanese make some of the BEST sweet treats. They’re not just plain sweet--they’re usually fragrant, delicate, exquisite, visually appealing...♡
Not only the traditional Japanese sweets, but also the ‘Western’-style cakes and other types of 洋菓子 (think Macarons, pastries and etc.).
I spent my 2nd last weekend polishing off the plates of some places I’ve been dying to visit even before the start of my training period in Tokyo. These ones fall into the Western side of the dessert category and, arguably, some people might not even consider 2 of the brands ‘Japanese’. Nonetheless, I definitely recommend these as must-tries for visitors to Tokyo with a sweet tooth :D
1) pâtisserie Sadaharu AOKI paris
Tumblr media
You’re evidently not a big enough fan of Japanese sweet treats if you don’t know of this brand--Aoki-san opened the first instalment of his brand in Paris in 1998 and made waves for combining Japanese flavours (think Matcha, Black Sesame, Red Bean Paste, Yuzu...) into French desserts. His cakes are refined and macarons are crisp and fragrant.
I managed to avoid the queue as I was there in the early afternoon before people had digested their lunch and were ready for tea :P Being a strong believer of Matcha and Azuki (red bean) being a match made in heaven, I had the Matcha-Azuki cake--it didn’t disappoint ^_^
The delicate balance of flavours and texture was captivating! With layers of fragrant Matcha mousse, sweet red bean paste, chocolate, and hazelnut crunch...every bite was a delight. It was a pity I didn’t have enough stomach to get another flavour to try...definitely pulling family/friends here next time so I can savour more items off the menu.
See this page here for a write-up by one of the Singaporean food blogs that I frequent!
At the moment, he has 4 branches in Tokyo and I visited the one near Yūrakuchō Station.
boutique Marunouchi Address: Shinkokusai BLD 1F, 3-4-1 Marunouchi,chiyoda-ku Tokyo Access: Yūrakuchō Station Location: Google Maps Opening hours: 11am~8pm
Tumblr media
2) Asterisque
Tumblr media
Strawberry Shortcake--the staple among Japanese cakes. Light, fluffy fresh cream and sponge layers with the best Japanese strawberries (you know how expensive they can be outside of Japan right?).
Honestly, I was hoping to go on a Strawberry Shortcake hunt and even marked out the places I wanted to visit on Google Maps based on the research I did on Japanese food review websites, blogs and online magazines. However, time only allowed for this one, and I’m glad it was a great choice!
This unassuming shop near Yoyogi-Uehara Station is probably off the radar for most tourists. There are only 2-3? tables in the shop for eat-in, but queues form with the locals coming in to get takeaways. There was a nice variety of cakes, all of which looked endearing, and some packaged cookies, chocolates and such available. The patissiers working in the kitchen window were busy decorating the Mothers’ Day cakes, and were really nice to turn the finished product towards me so I could get a photo :D.
Obviously, I had the Gateaux Aux Fraise (“Strawberry cake” in French, ¥450). It was everything I described about Japanese Strawberry Shortcakes earlier! The sponge was light and just moist enough (I’ve tried many where the sponge failed the entire cake by being too dry), and the strawberries used were a great balance of sweetness and tartness. As for the cream, I haven’t really been able to fault any cream I’ve tasted in Japanese desserts so far...they’ve always been fresh, fragrant, and not overly sweet.
People might call me crazy, but this was my brunch for the day hahaha. It was amazing, though! Would love to revisit to try the other pretty cakes in the display as well.
Asterique Address: 1 Chome-26-16 Uehara, Shibuya-ku, Tōkyō-to 151-0064, Japan Location: Google Maps Access: Yoyogi-Uehara Station Opening hours: 10am~8pm, closed Mondays Notes: won’t be able to sit big groups!
Tumblr media
3) Dominique Ansel Bakery
Tumblr media
Yes! Dominique Ansel is in Japan. Fans of this brand that originated in NY can rejoice in the Tokyo edition serving up some items limited to the branch.
Located in the glitzy Omotesando area, locals and foreigners alike queue for the famous Cronuts and Cookie Shots, with camera on hand ready to capture the staff torching the Frozen Smores, which they can then ‘feed’ their Instagram/FB followers with :P
I had the Cookie Shot, which I must say tasted delectable! I kind of underestimated this seemingly simple milk-in-a-cookie-cup concept ^_^;; The milk, which was slowly infused with the chocolate coating the cup, paired with the cookie outside was delicious.
The Japan-only “Paris-Tokyo” was a nice blend of Matcha and Passion Fruit, but a slightly messy affair while dissecting, as the pastry and chocolate layers were balanced on soft cream and ganache...so remember to take the photo before you dive in haha.
Was it worth the queue? Maybe. I liked the Cookie Shot lots! And social media foodies would probably love the highly instagrammable signatures.
Would I go again? Probably not, personally :P Been there, done that, checked off the list. I’d continue hunting Strawberry Shortcakes!
Dominique Ansel Bakery Address: 5 Chome-7-14 Jingūmae, Shibuya-ku, Tōkyō-to 150-0001, Japan Location: Google Maps Access: Meijijingu-mae and Omotesando Stations Notes:
Check out there menu here
Be prepared to queue! It took me about 45mins wait at around 1,2pm? Cannot remember the exact time...Here’s a shot of the queue and facade of the place:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Really, Japan has no lack of eateries to satisfy the sweet-toothed person. There are so many places I want to visit, 但我看我这一辈子都吃不完!Usually, even the random cafes that you chance upon in the neighbourhood serve decent desserts.
I’ll let you know again when I find great places worth making efforts for! :)

Cut off by Hawaii lava, pot growers refuse to let go dream
HALEKAMAHINA HILL, Hawaii (Reuters) – Dale Altman and his grandson Josh Doran live on a 5-acre (2-hectare) plot atop a hill on Hawaii’s Big Island by the erupting Kilauea volcano, where they grow medical marijuana.
Mark Clawson, 64, rests while watching a lava flow from a neighbor’s roof on the outskirts of Pahoa during ongoing eruptions of the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii, U.S., June 6, 2018. REUTERS/Terray Sylvester
They are the last remaining residents on Halekamahina Hill, after two roiling streams of lava spouting from ground fissures and flowing into the sea, completely cut off the community.
Altman, 66, estimates they have $100,000 worth of marijuana in the field that they are harvesting.
“That’s why we didn’t leave. It’s taken a lot of work.”
Altman says he doesn’t want to evacuate, leaving behind his home and marijuana crop with no income and nowhere to live. And atop the hill, the house is safe from the lava flows and its attendant fires.
“We’re not stupid. We thought this out,” Altman says.
I came by boat to this now desolated piece of paradise that drew retirees like Altman and adventurers like his grandson to come live under the shadow of one of the world’s most active volcanoes.
Since it began erupting on May 3, Kilauea has destroyed more than 600 homes, spread lava over 5,900 acres (2,388 hectares) and opened up at least 22 fissures in the ground sending fountains of lava up to 150 feet (45 meter) high.
One of those fissures, “Number 8,” created one of the lava streams that cut off Halekamahina Hill and continues to churn into the sea.

PELE’S OFFERING
I accompanied two residents of Halekamahina Hill, Mark Clawson, 64 and Tom McCarroll, 68, who had evacuated when the lava flows began cutting off land access to their homes. They were returning to check on their homes and belongings.
We stayed at McCarroll’s house the first night, dining on canned food and washing it down with a bottle of gin McCarroll’s wife had left behind as an offering to Pele, the legendary goddess of Kilauea volcano.
The sky above us glowed red from lava in the distance. We suffered bad air that night – heavy, sulfurous “vog” pollution that left us with scratchy throats. A few hours before dawn, I put on a respirator and dozed until the sky started to lighten.
“It’s just heartbreaking to come back and see this,” said McCarroll, a native of Texas who moved here 11 years ago with his wife, joined later by their three sons.
While the McCarroll house is intact, they can’t use it and may never be able to again. “It would be better for Pele to take it,” he said, echoing a common refrain that the land around the volcano belongs to the goddess.
We walked to Clawson’s house just after dawn thinking to take the most direct route across two hardened flows of lava, steam curling from cracks. We abandoned that course after noting how brittle and hollow some of it was.
Clawson’s house is among a couple of dozen farmlets on Halekamahina Hill, which is now surrounded on three sides by lava, including one bright, churning, molten flow.
The eruptions seemed to influence the weather. Fierce hot winds blew between the houses, rattling ripped sheet metal and torn up greenhouses.
Five chickens followed me – I’m not sure if they were hungry or just lonely. Three cows stood in a road just above one of the lava flows. Feral pigs, common in the jungles of Hawaii’s big island, were now openly patrolling the neighborhood.
Slideshow (11 Images)
At the end of another road, cut off by a lava flow, I did a double take: I was looking at a ridge of black, hardened lava a quarter-mile (400 meters) away and towering 40 feet (12 meters) above me. At this same spot three weeks earlier, I had been looking down into a valley at a new ground fissure oozing lava hidden in a grove of trees.
In May, as the eruption was starting, I thought I was reporting on volcanic activity inside a community. I now realize I had it backwards: this is about a volcano with communities inside it.
ACID DELUGE
The lava pouring into the sea near the bottom of Halekamahina Hill produces a towering plume of steam and hydrochloric acid rain called “laze,” a term combining lava and haze.
At Clawson’s house the wind turned, blowing the laze plume inland and for hours we were pummeled by some of the hardest rain I have ever experienced.
As we walked back to the boat for the return trip, the rain had mostly stopped. A few drops landed in our eyes and they stung badly.
Clawson says he had been living his dream in Hawaii. He had built his home from scratch. Revisiting his home, however, was an “exercise in futility.”
His house is fine, but is now inaccessible. “It’s surreal. I guess I just have to convince myself that I will come back, convince myself that this is going to last,” he said, gesturing toward his house. But he already has plans to move to Oregon.
Altman and his grandson Doran, however, are holding out. Doran plans to go out on the a boat and bring back supplies. When I met them, they were repairing their greenhouse.
They have enough food and water for now, Altman says, and they have cellphone reception. But he acknowledged that if they run out of food he and his grandson may reconsider staying.
“If it gets down to rice for every meal, the days are going to get really long,” Altman says.

I love roadtrips. Last summer, we did two weeks from Manhattan to Bar Harbor, Maine. It was all the incredible food, museums, and hiking a girl could want.
In Manhattan, we decided to take a day exploring of Central Park, starting at the southern end, and working up to the northern end where Harlem begins. I like to call it urban hiking. If you get to the very middle of the northern end (Some maps and signs say Lenox Avenue and some say Malcolm X Blvd – same thing) and keep walking another 16 blocks north (corner of 126th), you hit an amazing restaurant, Red Rooster Harlem. (There’s a subway stop right across from the restaurant if walking’s not your jam or if you’re using a cab, it’s 310 Lenox Ave.) It’s Marcus Samuelsson’s place, and it oozes cool and everything’s delicious. I picked up a baseball cap there, and couldn’t seem to put it away the rest of the trip. What can I say?! It loves hiking!
Summit of Cadillac Mountain. Acadia National Park. Bar Harbor, ME
Stephen King’s house. Bangor, ME.
I fell in love with the book, The Red Rooster Cookbook: The Story of Food and Hustle in Harlem, first. Everything was wonderful, but his cornbread was the best cornbread I’d ever had. There are a lot of cornbread recipes I love, but his really stands out. A huge thanks to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for letting me share it with you. Don’t skip the sage honey butter in the notes! Who knew that sage belonged in honey butter? Marcus did. And it does. My review of the book is right after the recipe.
If you love it, please come find me again or hit that follow button! 😀
CORN BREAD is excerpted from THE RED ROOSTER COOKBOOK © 2016 by Marcus Samuelsson. Reproduced by permission of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. All rights reserved.
Corn Bread
Makes 1 (9-x-5-inch) loaf
This is right up there with the Fried Yardbird as a core recipe at the Rooster. We even have someone dedicated to making all our corn bread. Charles Webb, a former Alvin Ailey dancer, is the keeper of our secrets.
I knew from the beginning how I wanted it to taste, but we continue to tinker and change the recipe. This version is very moist, almost custardy. It will keep for 4 days, but a better plan is to freeze individual slices.
1 cup cake flour 1 cup coarse yellow cornmeal ¾ cup sugar 2¼ teaspoons baking powder 1½ teaspoons Aleppo pepper 1½ teaspoon s coarse kosher salt 1¾ cups sour cream 1½ cups buttermilk 2 large eggs 1 large egg yolk 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled ⅔ cup corn kernels (fresh or thawed frozen)
1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Spray a 9-x-5-inch loaf pan with pan spray. 2. Whisk the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, Aleppo pepper, and salt together in a bowl. 3. Whisk the sour cream, buttermilk, eggs, yolk, and melted butter together in another bowl until smooth. 4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until combined. Fold in the corn. 5. Scrape the batter into the loaf pan and smooth out the top. Bake until the bread is browned and pulling away from the sides of the pan and a skewer poked into the center comes out clean, about 60 minutes. 6. Cool on a rack for 20 minutes. Run a knife around the sides of the pan to loosen the sides and turn out the loaf. You can cut it now—the slices will be messy—or cool completely.
There are plenty of things to spread on cornbread – like either the Bird Funk or Chicken Liver Butter (both on page 82) – but I do love the way sage honey butter melts into the bread when it’s warm: Beat 2 Tablespoons honey and 12 ripped fresh sage leaves into 8 Tablespoons (1 stick) softened, unsalted butter. Check it for salt. Cover and refrigerate the honey butter for at least an hour to give the sage a chance to work its flavor into the butter, but take it out of the refrigerator at least 15 minutes before serving.
My review of the book…..
The Red Rooster Cookbook: The Story of Food and Hustle in Harlem by Marcus Samuelsson Edition: Hardcover
I love this book. The recipes we’ve tried were all delicious and interesting! He’s an intense flavorist – not an apologetic bite to be found. There are cool photos throughout. I love making playlists to go along with cookbooks, and Marcus includes his own playlists, chapter by chapter. It’s just frosting on the cake, but I really appreciate good frosting.
He was born in Ethiopia, grew up in Sweden, and then moved to New York, and he brings all of that to the book. If you want more of his story, Yes, Chef: A Memoir is fantastic, and he narrates the audiobook himself.
My thoughts and pics of the dishes we tried: 1) Obama’s Short Ribs – p168, Spicy Sweets and Green Beans with Spiced Butter – p170 & 62, and Cornbread with Honey Sage Butter – p63. Holy wow! Is that ever a terrific dinner! The ribs braise in wine, stock, ginger, lemongrass, etc, and they’re tender as can be. The cornbread is easily the best I’ve ever had, and the sweet potato green bean dish is face meltingly spicy, and yummy, packed with Berbere seasoning and fresh jalapeños. 2) Mac and Greens – p119 with Killer Collards – p123 in Spiced Butter – p62. I can see why customers wouldn’t let him take it off the menu. Two pounds of collard greens simmer in a half pound of the spiced butter. I thought it was excessive til I tasted it. Ridiculously, wonderfully decadent. This is the perfect entree when you have vegetarian friends coming over. Yeah, you’ll get all the hugs. 3-4) Shrimp Bird and Grits – p 204. I was flipping through the book at the library, and noted about 50 recipes I wanted to try, and then saw this one. You fry two chicken thighs, then immediately separate the meat from the skin and toss it on a cooling rack. The meat gets shredded and tossed into grits with pimento cheese. Top that with a poached egg and tomato-y shrimp. Then you blitz the chicken skin with Saltine crackers and parmesan in the food processor to create “bird dust” that gets sprinkled over the whole thing. Chicken dust?! That’s the stuff of fairies, and the sort of fairies that you really want to visit. I hit the buy button on Amazon right in the middle of the library, and I’m so glad I did! This is beautiful.
Do you write in your books? If you do, this is a time sensitive one, so I find it really helpful to scribble out a timeline. 5-6) I think this could win over the biggest brussels-phobe. Brussels Sprouts with Bacon Dip – p295, and Peanut Bacon Pork Chops – p214. The dip is a homemade bacon mayonnaise made with the bacon grease, then the bacon is folded back in. Best dinner so far! Total wow! 7) Tomato-Watermelon Salad with Burrata and Tomato Seed Vinaigrette – p 242. I made this as a light refreshing dinner on a hot summer night. It hit the spot. My grocer doesn’t carry burrata anymore, so I went with the creamiest fresh mozzarella they had instead. Blistered tomatoes, pan seared watermelon, garlic, jalapeño, basil, and burrata dressed in balsamic, tomato seed, and olive oil. Really harmonious flavors. 8) Fried Yardbird – p 85. I LOVE his chicken shake. Gorgeous seasoning. Brined, then marinated overnight in buttermilk, coconut milk and chicken shake (I gave it two nights because life happened and that was fine), and finally coated, fried, and sprinkled with more chicken shake. Just bring the chicken shake to the table, because someone’s going to want more of that stuff! 9) Rooster Donuts with Sweet Potato Cream – p 186. These are a labor of love, but oh so worth it! The donuts are a little puff pastry-ish, and the sweet potato pastry cream has gorgeous texture and is not overly sweet. The recipe makes a whole army of little donut holes across your counter, but they disappear quickly.
Others I have flagged to try: Cauliflower Frites with Green Mayonnaise – p 56 * Wild Wild Wings – p 81 * BB Roo Chicken Sandwich on a Potato Roll – p 90 * Lemon Chicken with Green Harissa and Roast Eggplant Puree – p 94 * Jerk Bacon and Baked Beans – p 112 * Catfish and Pecans – p 115 * Cordero (Lamb) and Grits with Grilled Chile Vinaigrette – p 150 * Puerco en Cerveza (Pork in beer), Plantains on the side – p 154La Marqueta Pork Tack Tack – p 158 * Aunt Grete’s Beef – p 175 * Yep, Chicken and Waffles – p 210 * Fried Green Tomatoes with Buttermilk Dressing – p 217 * Block Party Ribs with Sweet Q Sauce – p 234 * Andouille Bread Pudding – p 260 * The Breakfast – p 266 * Brown Butter Biscuits – p 314 * Pan Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Dried Cherries and Walnuts – p 340 * The Green Viking (green apple sorbet with caramel) – p 361 * Banana and Pecan Pie – p 372

60s TV Shows
He moved to Hollywood in 1946 at a friend's suggestion. Her gift for being able to do dialects (Scottish, Irish, Spanish, Italian, German and Russian - to name a few) got her hired straight away and she soon became one of the regular members of the radio series Hollywood Hotel. For more details on the best 60s TV shows see our resources section below.
Tumblr media
While the series animated in large networks seemed mediocre, the cable television cartoon achieved several successes. It was while she was attending Los Angeles City College she was persuaded to audition for a role on a radio show. Before the TV show, there was a Gunsmoke radio show than aired from April 26, 1952 through June 18, 1961, co-existing with the Gunsmoke TV show for six seasons! Gunsmoke remains available on television and other media formats in the United States and worldwide. In the United States the frontier is open ended and usually means West.Other cultures have sometimes different understanding of frontiers.
60s TV Shows
For me, they are among the best Western TV themes, but I know I have omitted some other good ones. I know you were probably taught like me, not to stare at people, not to eavesdrop because it’s rude, not to judge people without knowing them, but that doesn’t stop us, does it? I like L'Amour. Many films have been made of his stories. The Museum continues to receive great ratings on the popular travel web sites, so someone else out there still appreciates Western art like I do. Gunsmoke was the first TV Western that appealed to adult viewers, depicting life as it might have been in a frontier town. Have a blessed night. One of his cowboys is always studying around the campfire at night reading Blackburn or other law books bartered for or bought. My one desire for Halloween, as yet unfulfilled, is to go out with friends dressed as Stormtroopers.
Go out as Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem! I just couldn’t concentrate on what the preacher was trying to say because from the back there were so many people to watch and notice instead of hearing the message. After all, there were, what, eight channels for 150 million people in those days? Abraham Lincoln had quite an impact in Springfield -- he worked as an attorney there, served as an elected official in the Old State Capital, and is buried there. Refresh your memory of the old TV shows that were popular in the 50's and 60's. Listen to the music that was popular during those years. No. That's an old concept/pass. There was a Western movie serial called The Black Whip. My dad has always been fond of the "Western" because many of them show a clear division between the good guys and the bad guys. The main characters were highly motivated, and tried their best to protect their community from some really bad guys.
This is my favorite, firstly because it's the earliest one I remember from the times I watched it with my father and secondly because it's the best. The first one was terrible. While there had been other westerns before such as "The Lone Ranger" and "Annie Oakley", Gunsmoke was the first one oriented towards Adult audiences. First Lady, "Lady Bird Johnson", was such a huge fan of the program that, when she learned that James Arness was a Republican, she felt personally betrayed! Starring James Arness, Milburn Stone, Amanda Blake, Dennis Weaver, Ken Curtis, Burt Reynolds, Buck Taylor, Glenn Strange, Roger Ewing and many other regular stars and guest stars. Ten years later their police began regular patrols. The museum began as a non-profit in 1960 with the help of Barry Goldwater and H K Machennan. The Museum has a website with information on current exhibits, upcoming exhibits, volunteering, special events and membership. Alongside mainstream animation nineties there was a strange and experimental movement.
In a short animation festival in 1989, organized by Craig Decker and Mike Gribble Spike (known as "Spike & Mike") and originally located in San Diego. I don’t remember him even kissing anyone during the series. I was not exaggerating about men and women kissing on the lips on camera for fear of the censor cutting scenes. Brian De Palma also borrowed from it in his movie "Body Double." De Palma borrowed quite a bit from Hitchcock. Updated on October 21, 2017 Denise McGill moreAs a Baby-Boomer, Denise and millions of others are becoming senior citizens. He chooses to fight because he knows that if he runs the bad guys will simply hunt him down anyway. The movies tend to present the townspeople as wimps and cowards, such as in high noon, where Gary Cooper had to face the bad guys alone because none of the townspeople would support him.
The series currently features the central characters of the USS Enterprise as well as several recurring characters. The U.S.S. Enterprise from 1967 (the Original) has always fascinated audiences and fans alike! Other fans have undergone various treatments to look exactly like Elvis Presley or Johnny Cash at various stages of their careers. Just to provide some perspective, let's take a look at what it would take to get one of the higher end rare weapons that you will need at the end of the game. You need to work hard to keep your ring intact. But for the aliens to reach Earth, dozens or hundreds of light years away, they would need quite sophisticated spacecraft. Experience the Star Trek universe like never before in STAR TREK TIMELINES, a truly immersive mobile game featuring hundreds of characters, stunning 3D ship battles, and an immense galaxy to explore. Trek number 3 was the last newspaper style format of the magazine, the new format began with the next issue number 4 and it featured a full color cover of a harder stock and high-quality paper and printing.
On purchase of your ticket you will receive an email that will contain your ticket in PDF format. Does it make sense to purchase medical evacuation insurance? It was puzzling to gauge why Krall was scouring the Enterprise looking for this magical device. Its fun watching Star Trek's classic episode of "the Cage" today with the camera sweeping across the "Enterprise" bridge officers on duty. You can acquire new bridge officers either from a personnel requisition officer or through completing missions. More and more of you will end up picking through the same generic artwork and similar cookie cutter designs, all while never finding better artwork. Read more why girls will strap this guitar on and not want to take it off! You know you want to. Geordi LaForge : 'The laws of physics just went right out the window. Check out Disposal Rule Adopting Launch, supra notice 15, at component II.B.
Now its time to install the blu-ray. Most of the time you have to interact with an anomaly or a star system, and often there is no combat involved but rather a lot of scanning and environmental interaction. I accepted that, however, there is still a way to manipulate time and transfer information in the form of blank to gain control and establish order and the best reality possible for the United States Of America. Desert or Mountain weddings such as Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon or Mount Charleston are possible with little effort on your part. No premiere date has yet been set for the second season of “Star Trek: Discovery.” But the new season is beginning to come into focus as casting and story details are revealed. Star Trek: Discovery’s second season is inching closer to its start of filming. Charlie X is a first season classic Star Trek episode written by Gene Roddenberry and DC Fontana. Here is another Shatner cult classic from The Transformed Man. I introduced this concept here at Star Trek Sci Fi Blog eleven years ago and then wowsers on the 60s tv shows!
What could be more Trek than a landing party encountering a race of peacenik energy beings on a planet that emits its own electromagnetic ‘music? As the Name Brand of "Star Trek" Progressed from the 1960's, the popularity of Star Trek also continued to grow. Publisher: IBArena The Star Wars legacy brings forth brilliant ideas for a Halloween party theme. Either way your friends list needs to be targeted to your market. While this feature appears often in single player RPGs, it is a rare inclusion in a MMORPG and has been a cornerstone for the game's ever growing success in a tough market. With the tough trekking done, the second night’s camp had a much more lively spirit. Chords are combinations of two or more notes. All rooms are spacious, airy inside and are exceptionally good, it's worth remembering. When Tribbles are near, Klingon's have plenty to fear which proved true.
There was a time when there was not any woman with their own talk show. But it did because TV only needed one prime time cartoon and The Flintstones came first. I wondered what his story was and how it all came about. She wasn't the most powerful witch and sometimes her spells came out all wrong. Take this quiz to find out if you’re a true child of the Sixties! As with many 60s TV series' the viewer is just expected to take the show's premise at face value. However, the R rating was introduced in the late 60s so it was clear that subject matter would become a bit more adult-oriented as the decade waned. The majority of today’s rising videographers tend to be more familiar with non-linear video editing. Using the switcher, cuts are easily done in varied video sources and in wipes, dissolves, and fades. This is the question that more and more thinking people are asking as it becomes more and more apparent. To this day, with the exception of maybe the Simpsons, it is one of the most well known cartoons and one of the few that went from cartoon to the silver screen using real people.
These characters are real and their interaction almost comic - it has kept viewers glued to the goggle box every afternoon. The show takes place in the year 2517 and follows the characters as they encounter and wrangle a whole new frontier- a new star system. You could easily do a Part 2 and more on this topic to capture more clueless characters! At the end of 1939, Sinatra accepted an offer from the more popular big band leader Tommy Dorsey. But the worst is "Potsie" from Happy Days, who went from cunning and clever to early altzheimer's by series end. Cox, of course, would go on to star in the mega hit series Friends. Due to presenting the changed behavior of cops, The Mod Squad became a big hit and one of the few cop shows with a big audience of youngsters. Due to the hiatus, Damages has fallen off the radar, but this show absolutely deserves a "best of TV shows" nod. The following list charts the best shows that are currently trending right now on Netflix Australia. Shows are made up connected with several specific graphics termed supports. Gail Leino takes a wise practice way of preparing and organizing events, celebrations and vacation parties with unique a few ideas for sixties party items and fun sixties topic celebration games.
Artificial material have been really widely-used throughout the Sixties. No, but i've done some things that may have seemes weird to someone in the mid-1960s. I am certain Judy Carne might have worn a romper like this one on the iconic 60's TV show, "Laugh In". People like talk show topics that the whole family can watch, and that entertains us. Which ones did you like best? What this means is that the actual set can be a lot thinner than a CRT receiver and that is very attractive for people as the old ones were very bulky and took up a lot of room. She can twist very well. Each episode of In Treatment features therapist Dr. Paul Weston (actor Gabriel Byrne) having a session with one of five patients. The show remained popular during its initial run of five seasons and 123 episodes. The show went up against Dallas and fared horribly in the ratings, it was then scheduled against Beauty and the Beast and did even worse in the ratings, if that was possible. Sinatra acted in a television special in November 1965, A Man and His Music, and released a corresponding double vinyl album, which reached the Top Ten chart and also went gold.
