A Marriage of Sense Au Moodboard
My protege, as you call him, is a sensible man; and sense will always have attractions for me.
Yes, Marianne, even in a man between thirty and forty.
He has seen a great deal of the world; has been abroad, has read, and has a thinking mind.
I have found him capable of giving me much information on various subjects; and he has always answered my inquiries with readiness of good-breeding and good nature.
— Elinor Dashwood, Chapter 10, Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
A Marriage of Sense might require—in time— more sensibility than either had initially thought when the Colonel proposed a marriage between friends.

The sun shined through the woods past the house of the Dashwood’s, horses could be heard trotting and women were heard chattering. Through the midst of the thick trees and soil mud stood a man, his features were far older, his eyes laid coldly, and his expression was not one of warmth. He travelled along the dirt road to visit the Dashwood’s hopefully to give him some piece of mind after the tragic death of his old beloved Eliza. The man was referred to as Colonel Brandon, he had been in the war for some time. “Least it’s a nice day” he thought “If it were to rain, it would be certainly tragic”.
The colonel had finally arrived at the door of the Dashwood’s, he knocked only to be greeted by Mrs Dashwood. Mrs Dashwood had three daughters: Elinor Dashwood being the eldest, Marianne Dashwood being the second youngest and Margaret Dashwood the youngest sibling. The Colonel had been a friend of Sr John who welcomed the Dash woods when they first moved into this house.
The colonel could hear something emanating through the house, a tune coming from what sounded like a piano. He decided to follow the sound out of curiosity however something else caught his eye, out the window, a girl could be seen sitting in a tree with a book. He edged forward to the window to inspect the girl sitting up on the tree. The leaves blew lightly in the wind, her dress laid still on the branch of the tree and her hair followed with the movement of the wind. The Colonel had never seen anything like her, the girl was certainly younger than he and her features were quite stunning. The girl wore a white dress that reached her ankles and her eyes laid softly as she turned the page. She wore ribbons in her hair that never seemed neatly tied and her lips curved into a nicely oval shape.
The Colonel was stunned, he was entranced with this mysterious female that sat so perfectly in the branches. It was like seeing a ghost from his past, he placed his rugged hand onto the window. The girl on the tree closed her book, she placed her legs over the branch and hoped down. “Mr Brandon are you going to join us for tea” Mrs Dashwood implied “You must’ve had such a long Journey”. The colonel stammered as Mrs Dashwood broke his trance “Indeed, thank you for your kind hospitality”. He was quite fascinated by the girl in the tree to say the least, perhaps she was related to the Dashwood’s.
The Colonel followed through to join Mrs Dashwood and her daughters for some tea It must’ve been such a long Journey, how was the travel” Elinor asked. “It was quite long; I did however see quite beautiful sceneries” the colonel reminisced of his travels.
Marianne was not interested in talking with the Colonel, she thought of him as being far too cold and old for her liking. Marianne had an interest in another man whom she admired; John Willoughby, he was far more charming and shared the same interests that Marianne had.
Elinor had talked with the Colonel for quite some time, the passing hour of the clock had struck noon. “My, the time had flown already it seems” Elinor spoke softly. The Colonel had smiled and thanked the Dashwood’s for the kind hospitality, his eyes loomed over towards the younger sibling. “Pardon me, I don’t believe we’ve met” the colonel smiled kindly at Marianne. The younger woman caught the colonels affection, he deemed her as beautiful and yet Marianne paid no mind to the man. “I believe I have other matters to attend to” Marianne stood up from the table and walked past the Colonel coldly.
Elinor was quite surprised her sister acted so coldly in this manner; she would normally greet guests warmly. “Don’t worry I believe it’s getting late for me, thank you for your kind hospitality, Mrs Dashwood” the colonel politely bowed. He exited the room, he wandered down the hall to come to a sudden holt. “The window” he thought “That young woman who was sitting upon the tree, I wonder who she is”. He pondered for a moment, perhaps if by chance he could walk by the tree, he could introduce himself to the young woman.
The colonel decided to wander by the tree to hopefully gain the chance to introduce himself to the young woman. He exited through the main front door and walked over to the big tree, it was quite old, the bark seemed to have rotted away from the rain. Beneath the big roots of the tree, he placed his hand along the branch to which his eyes had fallen upon a book. The colonel picked it up out of curiosity, the book was small and light. A single ribbon was placed within the pages as a book mark, he realized that this book was the exact one the girl was reading.
“What are you doing with my book” a females voice spoke out from behind the colonel. He turned around only to find a girl standing by the trees roots “Pardon, my apologies, I didn’t mean to steal your book”. The Colonel had the chance to take a closer look at the young woman “Stunning” he thought “absolutely stunning”. He was entranced with the girl’s appearance, her youth reminded him of a time he had spent with his old beloved.
The colonel has never revealed to anyone about his past, the torment that lingered of his Eliza never escaped his mind. He cherished every memory of her, the young woman he once fell in love with now dead, penniless, and loveless. Time had passed since then; healing wasn’t easy and of course it did take time but sometimes fragments of his memories would resurface every now and again.
“Who are you, did Elinor send for you to retrieve me” the mysterious girl questioned “no I’m afraid not, are you related to the Dashwood’s”. The colonel wondered why he had never heard of this girl; he knew of the three daughters but not of the fourth. “I’m their cousin, mother and father are away on a business trip, I’m only here for the time being” the girl explained, this would explain why the colonel had never seen her before.
“I’m not sure if Mrs Dashwood has formally introduced me, I am Colonel Brandon” he bowed politely toward the young woman. The young woman curtsied back and replied “I’m y/n l/n” unlike most young women, y/n was adventurous and admirable for her imagination. Colonel Brandon held out his arm “perhaps I shall show you around, come would you mind walking with me”.
Y/n smiled, of course she had never met anyone quite polite as the colonel, although he didn’t seem interesting compared to Marianne’s suitor Willoughby. “Your quite brave climbing a tree by yourself, not many women have the adventurous spirit” the colonel complimented. Y/n never saw herself to be one for danger, the idea of going into such a state would be quite harsh to say the least. “Perhaps we should formally know each other more” the colonel was about to speak further when “Y/n” Mrs Dashwood called out.
“Y/n, come inside” Mrs Dashwood was standing by the door, she was worried y/n had run off again. Y/n quickly scrambled “Apologies Colonel” the young woman was rushing toward the house. Mrs Dashwood smiled at y/n as she entered the house “Don’t worry Mrs Dashwood, y/n’s safe”. The colonel tried to reassure Mrs Dashwood from afar, before he followed along, he heard a footstep. He turned to see who it may be but to no avail was anyone in sight, the colonel turned to enter the house.
Y/n headed up toward her room to which she bumped into her cousin Marianne “Pardon me”. Y/n was curious to see if her cousin had met the colonel “Have you seen that man Marianne”. Marianne assumed y/n was talking about the colonel who just introduced himself while they were having tea. “Yes unfortunately, he isn’t as charming and he’s quite old for my liking” Marianne spoke softly “He’s quite odd isn’t he”. Y/n had to agree, yes, he was old but then she saw something charming about him.
She had no intention of trying to say he was a bad person but rather Marianne thought he wasn’t the most interesting man she had ever met. “Y/n are you coming to the party, many suitors may be there and who knows you may end up meeting someone of your favor” Marianne asked.
“Perhaps, I’m still quite young to think about that kind of stuff, I would rather read and see to more adventures” y/n laughed, she had never exactly dreamed of herself being tied down instead she dreamed of travelling around the world.
The colonel to y/n was quite old and yet honorable in his ways, perhaps y/n could get used to him.
Who knows perhaps a party might be a way to meet someone interesting, at least to y/n.

Sense and Sensibility Readthrough Part 10
Chapter 13, Pages 54-61
Today I actually paid attention to the meaning of the lyrics to Rolling Girl, and couldn't stop myself from crying. Then, like a sucker, I looked for English covers, and cried again. Oops. Song hits too close to home. Anyways.
Previously, Margaret was the best character. Marianne x Willougby now confirmed beyond reasonable doubt to Elinor, and Mrs. Jennings and everybody else now knows that Elinor has a secret beau. Poor Elinor, and probably poor Edward in advance, too.
Relatedly, two old friends dragged me out last night to witness the rare event of yours truly drinking, which mostly involves me pulling entertaining faces at weak cocktails after a single sip, because alcohol tastes as powerful and godforsaken as nuclear fallout to me, and lingers just about as long on the poor blasted wasteland of my helpless tongue. I don't have a secret beau, but they still did insist on dragging out of me every plausibly hypothetical detail, and then proceeded to try to set me up with the waitress of the night when there predictably turned out to be none. I dearly love my friends, but, Elinor, my point is that I want you to know that I feel for you.
I feel like sometimes I turn these preambles into diary entries. I'm entirely okay with this, though I should probably tag them somehow.
Also, oh my lord, this chapter sure happened, wow.
Readthrough below.
Chapter 13 Apparently things start really evolving now. Exciting. (EDIT: THEY SURE DID)
THEIR INTENDED excursion to Whitwell turned out very differently from what Elinor had expected. She was prepared to be wet through, fatigued and frightened;
Aha, Austenism coming up, first thing.
but the event was still more unfortunate,
Yess called it. So how was it worse? Were there floods? Surprise Edward & Mrs. Jennings meeting?
for they did not go at all.
... my expectations got double-subverted. Well, something is about to happen. I see now why all the details of the coming trip were attached to the last chapter instead of opening this one. They're out to picnic, and;
eager to be happy, and determined to submit to the greatest inconveniences and hardships rather than be otherwise.
I love this line. Anyway, while they're eating, Colonel Brandon receives a concerning letter though; his faces changes colour and he has to leave temporarily, like a really important phone call.
I guess this will be the impetus for change?
Haha, Lady M tries to stop her mother from prying into Brandon's personal business but Mrs Jennings is just not that type of person. Brandon's not really forthcoming and says it's just business in town, but he does have to leave immediately to attend to it.
It sounds really urgent. Him not being present means they can't go to the venue Sir Middleton wanted to use, which was an estate Brandon was related to. He's effectively cancelled the whole party for a business that where apparently, "I cannot afford to lose one hour." He's still not forthcoming on what though.
Willoughby and Marianne make snide comments betting that Brandon has invented the excuse himself to cancel the party because he's a spoilsport. Guys, please. :(
Sir M is very accomodating of Brandon regardless. He's a good-hearted fellow, really, if a little dim occasionally. Aww, Brandon says goodbye to Elinor. That's sweet, I really enjoy their friendship. Help I teared up slightly, I think I'm still emotional from the song. Marianne gets a silent nod. Yeah, I understand.
Anyway, now that he's gone, Mrs. Jennings starts eagerly speculating the reason for his urgency. A "Miss Williams" supposedly.
WHAT
SHE'S HIS DAUGHTER? BRANDON HAS A DAUGHTER? His NATURAL DAUGHTER? She's good enough at least to only reveal the daughter part to Elinor, but, damn. Wow, uh. Wow. People sure gonna bug him about Miss Williams now.
Wait but he's 35 right, so how old is Miss Williams?? When do people have kids again?? Oh my gosh, is Margaret going get a FRIEND HER OWN AGE?? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!
"Oh yes; and as like him as she can stare. I dare say the Colonel will leave her all his fortune."
But WHAT HAPPENED? Why aren't they together right now? Why is he attending random parties alone? aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
Though I do wanna say that does make the Mrs. Jennings' hypothetical Marianne/Brandon pair a bit stranger. Beyond just a man who could be her father, a daughter who could be her sister? That's something alright.
after some consultation, it was agreed, that although happiness could only be enjoyed at Whitwell,
HAHA, I really enjoy these lines. It's the kind of thing where it's not what anyone is intending on meaning, but it's accurate to what's happening in a roundabout way. Anyone everyone goes on a drive instead and presumably Willoughby and Marianne have a very romantic time on theirs.
Another dance in the evening? Is that just what rich people do all day? ... Do rich people still do that all day? Wow, there are like 20 Careys, a family who has now been mentioned twice that I recall and I don't know if they'll be important or just filling up the numbers.
Also I admire and yet detest the seating arrangements haha.
Mrs Jennings -> Elinor -> Willoughby -> Marianne. Willoughby, why you separate the sisters? You don't seem to talk much to Elinor anyway. ... are you trying to hog Marianne? Is that the play? I'm not judging here, I'm just curious. Would be sneaky play.
Despite the general pattern of narrative voice, it is abundantly clear that Elinor is the primary focus here as all the information is exactly and only what passes through her ears; makes the seating arrangement of Mrs Jennings on the other side very clever too, beyond just the charming blocking of having her lean over two people to harass Marianne with her mysterious Romance Sleuthing Acumen. Apparently she has figured out exactly where Marianne and Willoughby have gone on their "drive", and thanks to seating Elinor will now hear too.
HAHA SHE CALLS WILLOUGHBY MR. IMPUDENCE. This and Willoughby calling Elinor saucy, the dialogue really doesn't pull punches sometimes. Apparently Willoughby took her on a tour of his to-be-inherited estate. Elinor pieces together that Mrs. Jennings got the beans spilled from the servants. I told you two! Don't discount the servants! Mrs Jennings sure doesn't! Treat your groom a greater friend, Willoughby, and mayhap the seal of loyalty might have affixed his lips. :'D
Ah, but Elinor is still worried about propriety. Elinor, I love you dearly, but this is most harmless romanticism really. It's not like the horse thing. Haha, aww, Elinor's tactitly acknowledged Marianne’s relationship and intentions with Willoughby, and Marianne does that thing where she sort of lost the argument but is too pleased to really turn it around.
Haha, Marianne returns later to describe the actual house she saw with great enthusiasm. She's just that excited, how very Marianne to gush so; she might also be gloating juuuuust a little over having seen the house and expecting to inherit it. :'D Very amusing; poor Elinor to have to listen to it though, deliberate or not. Her own beau is so far away, and his own inheritance dicier. Must sting a bit.
AaaaaAAAAAAAA this has been my hour but I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MISS WILLIAMS. I would have continued onto the next chapter, hour be damned because it's saturday, but skimming through Brandon doesn't come back. I don't want to skim too far ahead but as far as I can tell he doesn't come back for at least 10 chapters noooooooooooo you can't just spring that on me and leave me hanging aaaaaaaaaaaa. :'(
Ahh well, I suppose if I were any of the Dashwoods I wouldn't expect to see him until "after winter" anyway, whenever that will be. That'll be it for today then, I suppose. :'D
I think with the addition of Miss Williams, Colonel Brandon and his DAUGHTER are now the most intriguing characters to me. Not being able to find out their deal for weeks is gonna drive me nuts. I hope he's not an absent father though...
Miss Williams is also an instant favourite for just existing, because as you can see with Margaret, I have a soft spot for children caught in an adult world.

The evening was set, everyone was getting ready for the annual ball, it was a time for the ladies to find a suitor. The building was nearby a country side to where the Dashwood’s were close too, it was not an easy path however the Colonel had been kind enough to show a way through the dusky woods. It was nearly time for the three daughters to show their elegance in the ball “Elinor, are you almost done” Mrs Dashwood called out. Her eldest daughter was trying her best to look beautiful for the upcoming ball. “Indeed mother, I am almost ready” Elinor shouted back, Elinor wore a blue gown with her brown hair tied neatly back. Mrs Dashwood hurried to the front area, she was expecting to see Marianne at the front “Marianne, Marianne” Mrs Dashwood called out.
Marianne was sitting in the piano room; she wore a pink gown with her hair tied neatly yet loose curls sat against her cheeks. The young sister’s fingers touched the piano, she lightly pressed it as a tune slowly played. Marianne wasn’t looking forward to going to this ball, she thought the suitors wouldn’t be to her liking. The one thing she dreaded was Mr Brandon asking her to dance, in fact he politely asked if she were free to join him. Marianne in response declined the offer as she offered herself to dance with the enchanting Mr Willoughby. Marianne couldn’t picture herself to be dancing with such an old, reserved man. Mr Willoughby was different; he could charm his romantic ways into her heart.
“There you are Marianne, oh you look absolutely stunning” Mrs Dashwood complimented “Of course, thank you mother”. Marianne couldn’t help but feel rather shy towards her mother’s compliment, all she dreamed about was to waltz on the dancefloor with Mr Willoughby.
Elinor had come down the stairs into the front of the main entrance “Oh dear Elinor look at you, both of you look beautiful” Mrs Dashwood smiled. Elinor had never felt this elegant before, it was like something of an old fairy tale. “I must wonder Marianne, did the Colonel ask you to accompany him” Elinor recalled “I declined him Elinor, I promised I would attend with Mr Willoughby”.
Elinor nodded, she felt sorry for the Colonel as he was looking forward to dancing with Marianne however ever since he has arrived, she had been ignoring him. It was a shame though, but it seemed the Colonel had eyes for another, an odd girl that he had met. Elinor recalled the time the Colonel had asked about the girl but to his dismay she was nowhere to be seen.
“Marianne, Elinor have you seen y/n” Mrs Dashwood questioned “no mother, I believe she’s reading again” Marianne answered.
“She’s always reading that girl; I do hope she finds a suitor” Elinor interjected.
Y/n was hiding in her room, her head laid softly on a pillow as her eyes scanned through the words of the book. Y/n’s dress was an elegant ball gown, her hair hung loosely in a bun while strands of her locks sat against her cheeks. “Y/n, y/n” Mrs Dashwood called out, she walked up to y/n’s room coming through the doorway “oh there you are, come y/n dear we must be off”.
Y/n closed her book, her eyes stared at her aunt who was trying to get her to join her cousins for the ball. “Must I, could I skip out on this one” y/n wasn’t a fan of balls, the idea of trying to get married off in such a hurry was quite exhausting. Y/n after all was still young and full of life, she would rather travel the world or read until her eyes had given out to the knowledge. “Why would you want to skip out on the ball, you look absolutely stunning” Mrs Dashwood wandered in and sat on y/n’s bed. “My dear y/n do not be afraid; you will have a wonderful time and you may even find a suitor” Mrs Dashwood held y/n’s hand. Mrs Dashwood had treated y/n like their fourth daughter, she had cared for her ever since she was a child.
“Oh please, I would rather be a spinster” Y/n laughed.
“Spinsters aren’t truly happy until they find their love y/n, trust me I know you will find someone” Mrs Dashwood smiled. “Come y/n, enough with the jests, we must go now” Mrs Dashwood got up from y/n’s bed and went downstairs to her daughters waiting by the door.
Y/n had walked down the stairs with her head in the clouds, she imagined herself to be a princess attending a royal ball full of princes or dukes.
“Oh, my goodness, you look beautiful y/n” Elinor smiled.
“Oh, trust me I’m far from it” y/n laughed.
The Dashwood’s had left through the main door and entered the carriage, the riders had left the home to enter the annual ball. The carriage slowly rocked up and down as the women stared out the window, y/n was dreaming of reading her books again, perhaps there was an adventure where she could be independent and not rely on trying to find a suitor. Y/n thought her cousins were lucky, they all had dashing men that charmed their ways into their hearts. Marianne was to attend with Mr Willoughby and Elinor with the dashing Edward. The only person that was attending with no one to go with was the Colonel, although he had planned to ask y/n, but he couldn’t find her in time, so he instead asked Marianne who refused.
The Dashwood’s had eventually arrived at the ball, men and women flocked together to dance under the magical night. Everyone was seen waltzing together while others were just chatting amongst themselves. “Miss Elinor” a man with dashing looks approached her, it was Edward and it seemed he had planned for Elinor’s hand for this dance. Marianne and y/n had awaited on the side, Marianne hoped to see Mr Willoughby arrive and ask for her to dance.
Y/n had no intention to dance with anyone, the least she could do was dance by herself if she had too.
Something however out of the corner of y/n’s eye had caught her attention, there was a man standing all alone by himself. He did not smile nor charm the other women like the other men did. The appearance he took on was rather scary, he was observing the other dancers as no one took interest in him. Many of the other women gossiped, they were quite afraid to approach the lonely man, but it seemed he had no interest in asking any one either.
The appearance he upheld was not the best looking but he wasn’t exactly beastly either. The man’s greasy black hair sat straight onto his cheek bones, his eyes were quite cold, and his expression was not one of warmth.
Y/n had thought to herself “How could a man like that come to a place like this”.
The man had peaked y/n’s interest, so much so she thought about asking him to dance. “Marianne, who do you think that man is” y/n asked, “My, he seems rather creepy doesn’t he” Marianne commented. Y/n didn’t listen, she wanted to investigate who the man was “Pardon me” y/n excused herself from Marianne.
Y/n had made her way past the people dancing to the lonely man sitting by himself “excuse me sir, I was wondering if you would be so kind to introduce yourself”. The man made a sneer and glared at the girl “if you must know then you wouldn’t approach”. Y/n thought the man’s tone was rather dull, he seemed like he didn’t want anyone talking to him “Sir, I’m not intending any harm I only wished to know your name”.
The man rolled his eyes “Fine you may call me Snape, Severus Snape”, Y/n smiled out of politeness and introduced herself “and you may call me y/n, y/n l/n”. The man wore black, dark robes that stretched even beyond his feet, he didn’t even bother to tie his hair back like most men would and preferred to not talk to anyone. “Mr Snape, I must ask why you would come to a place like this, if you don’t intend to dance with anyone” Y/n asked, it would make sense to at least have a reason.
Severus sighed and answered the annoying girls question in hopes she would leave “a change of scenery” he muttered. Y/n noticed Severus was holding a book, it read “Potions and spells” it was quite fascinating to see such a man bring something magical into a ball. “That book Mr Snape, I’m curious, do you like Magic”.
Severus hid the book away quickly “must you stick your nose into things that don’t belong to you”. Y/n placed her hands together out of politeness, she had gone quiet “my apologies it’s just, I adore books, and I admire reading different kinds, even ones with knowledge”.
Severus in that moment gazed at y/n in interest, he had never met a woman that would be interested in reading. “Miss y/n, if I were you, I suggest books with more accurate information rather than the one’s written by absurd muggles” Severus coldly implied, “Muggles, what are muggles Mr Snape” y/n questioned. Y/n was curious about these terms he used, Muggles must’ve been some invention or perhaps an insult to people who have no knowledge or understanding of research.
“Miss Y/n, if your mind is so fascinated by what I say then perhaps you would be interested in becoming my assistant” Severus was offering y/n a position, a position for a job for a woman of this era but more so for this so-called magic. “Mr Snape are you offering me a job” Y/n lightened up with excitement “Obviously or were you not listening”. Y/n was quite astounded, women weren’t often allowed to work as it was looked down upon and she would need to be married off.
“Mr Snape, I can’t think of a happier moment then to show you my gratitude” Y/n smiled with kindness. Severus’s eyes softened at the gaze of y/n; her smile was unlike most of the women he saw.
Meanwhile the Colonel had just arrived, and he wore an elegant suit to match his attire, he spotted Marianne alone. The colonel had stepped into the ball and wandered towards Marianne “Pardon me but I must say you look ravishing” Colonel Brandon smiled. Marianne dismissed the Colonel with a cold tone “Colonel, indeed”. The Colonel was quite keen for asking Marianne for a dance however he caught sight of the girl he saw from that day on the tree.
He stopped in his tracks to catch himself staring at the elegant princess, her hair hung loosely, and her dress nearly touched the floor in her favourite colour. The gloves she wore sat nicely around her arms positioned in a lady like manner and her eyes glistened with joy. Y/n’s youth and her features made the Colonel feel intertwined with lust.
He reminisced the day he found that book, in that book held a ribbon, he kept the ribbon in hope he would meet her again. It might’ve been un-gentlemanly to keep such a ladies attire, but he knew little about her aside from her name and her relations to the Dashwood’s.
The colonel kept a close on y/n that was until he saw an odd-looking man, he certainly wasn’t upper class, and he had no social status. The man had no dashing features in fact he resembled something of the opposite. The man was talking to y/n to which he made her smile, it astounded him why out of anyone y/n could speak with it had to be him.
The colonel wanted to intervene to ask y/n for a dance, a dance to hopefully win her and get her away from that odd gentleman. “Miss y/n” the colonel smiled out of politeness “You look ravishing this evening” he placed y/n’s hand to his lips as a polite greeting. “Colonel Brandon, such a pleasant surprise seeing you here” y/n politely smiled, she hadn’t seen the Colonel since he found her book.
“Forgive me, I was talking to Severus Snape” Y/n had offered the introduction of Severus to the Colonel. “Ah I see, allow me to formally introduce myself, sir I am Colonel Brandon” he formally introduced himself, Severus glared at the man while coldly replying “clearly”. The Colonel hadn’t expected such a cold response but kept his politeness “Miss l/n, may I ask for you to accompany me in this dance”.
Y/n smiled and curtsied “of course Colonel”.
The Colonel had taken y/n’s hand, when his eyes met Severus’s there was an instant cold feeling. Severus glared at the Colonel, it was like the two were complete opposites, one polite and the other cold.
This hadn’t affected the Colonel; however, he was happy to see y/n again only this time at a dance. The two began to waltz around on the dance floor, y/n could see Elinor with Edward and Marianne talking to the dashing Mr Willoughby. Y/n was quite fascinated by Mr Snape, he seemed different from any of the other men, he had no interest in marriage and certainly admired y/n’s love for books.
The rest of the night went on however y/n had hoped she would see that man again, but it seemed he had left. The colonel accompanied y/n to the carriage and bid her farewell, y/n felt lost as if for the first time, she had met someone interesting.
Y/n had planned to find that man again and speak more about the position of becoming his assistant.
Anyways that’s all I have for now:

As part of fan fiction writer appreciation day, I am taking a leaf out of @cassiopeiasara ‘s book and I have made a post of some of my favorite fics. To narrow things down a bit I’ve gone with either smaller fandoms, less-common pairings, or genfic that I particularly liked.
There are no Worst Witch recs here I’m afraid - the process of trying to whittle down the list to a small list was too daunting for trying to get this post finished for today.
Recs beneath the cut.
With the exception of the rec for The Remains of the Day (which I explain in more detail below) all of these recs are in the K-T range, going by the AO3 rating system.
Doctor Who – Genfic
Horton, the Elephant Who Waited by wshaffer; 11th Doctor
wshaffer wrote a 1200 word fic completely in Dr. Seuss-style rhyme about Horton meeting the 11th Doctor and it’s utterly delightful.
Bus to Strathclyde by The_Plaid_Slytherin; 9th Doctor
A ficlet about Nine meeting six-year-old Donna that time that she took the bus to Strathclyde. Short, sweet, and entertaining.
Murder She Wrote – half gen, half unrequited Michael Hagarty/Jessica Fletcher because let’s be honest he’s been in love with her since the moment he saw her in season 2
Tidings of Comfort and Joy by Lucy Gillam
Years after the end of the show, Michael Haggarty shows up in Jessica’s life again. Supposedly by chance. Supposedly doesn’t want anything in particular. Jessica thinks he’s lying. (She’s right).
Rosemary and Thyme – Laura Thyme/Rosemary Boxer
Just Two Florists at a Wedding by Wine Through Water
This is established relationship and Laura’s daughter finding out about Laura and Rosemary being together. It’s sweet and funny and includes Laura’s daughter demanding to know what Rosemary’s intentions are.
Of All The Trees That Are In The Wood by Cerberusia.
Rosemary invites Laura to spend Christmas with her. Rosemary has some awesome lesbian friends (extremely well-written and charming OCs) who end up helping Laura see that she really is in love with Rosemary. Slow burn, because Laura is so clueless.
Planting Seeds by phantom listener
This is a lovely bit of pre-ship Laura/Rosemary in which they manage to get into even more trouble without a murder case than with one. It’s charming, cozy, quite funny and in the best spirit of the show.
Rosemary and Thyme – Laura Thyme/Richard Oakley
Dandelions and Pimpernels  by by_no_one_more_than_me (Lady_Cleo)
Laura/Rosemary is my OTP for this show with one exception, and this fic is it. In the episode The Invisible Worm there is a professor at a school who falls head over heels for Laura and without spoilers there is something that happens between the two of them at the end of the episode that I always wished someone would write a follow-up fic about, and then Lady_Cleo did, and did a magnificent job at it.
Sense and Sensibility – Elinor Dashwood/Colonel Brandon
Christopher and Elinor by Mercy
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
This is an epistolary re-write of the entirety of Sense and Sensibility, in which Elinor and Colonel Brandon end up together. It’s one of my favorite Elinor/Brandon fics, because I love epistolary stories, because it tweaks the other characters in ways that don’t feel like a huge departure from the novel, and because it takes place over such a long period of time there’s plenty of time to develop the Elinor/Brandon relationship.
Thor Ragnorak: Bruce Banner & Valkyrie brotp
I brought a knife to a gunfight by paperclipbitch
Set between the end of the movie and the first post-credits scene, it’s Bruce and Valkyrie brotp, and I don’t think I can summarize it better than the author, who put it thus:
“I have questions,” Valkyrie says.
“I don’t want to answer them,” Bruce replies.
Avatar: The Last Airbender – Iroh/Ursa
Thy Brother’s Wife by AzarDarkstar
I read this on fanfiction.net originally and was delighted to discover while putting this list together that it’s now on the AO3. This is a quiet, but evocative piece in which we glimpse into the life of Ursa, and that of Zuko, through the eyes of Iroh. This is mostly a very lovely unrequited/possibly mutual pining piece – we never see things from Ursa’s perspective. There’s no infidelity, and it’s surprisingly canon-compliant.
The Remains of the Day - Miss Kenton/Mr. Stevens
I love this book, and the Merchant-Ivory film version, and as much as I love the way the story originally goes I also desperately ship Miss Kenton and Mr. Stevens.
thisiszircon, who used to be on LiveJournal but is now on Dreamwidth (the name links to the stevens/kenton tag on their dreamwidth) has written the best Miss Kenton/Mr. Stevens fanfic I’ve found anywhere and I can recommend all of their stories. Thisiszircon really understands the characters and does slow burn like nobody’s business. And a bunch of the fics are really quite long, which is a delight.
A number of the fics are in first person but I don’t actually find this to be a problem because a) they’re very well done, and b) the book itself is of course in first person. Some of these stories are R/M rated but all the ones I have read have taken a long time to get to R/M, are quite obvious about when they’re going to head into that territory, and you can either stop there if you want or scroll quite a bit past and then just carefully scroll your way back up until you’re at a point that makes sense, if like me you avoid sex scenes.
Common Ground (Part one can be found here) is one of my favorites - it takes the book scene (from the movie), alters it a little to open up the possibility for more dialogue, and settles you in for a long, slow burn. Common Ground is rated R but it takes quite a long time before it gets to R territory, if I recall correctly.
