THE MAIL
In a historical context where emergency housing has reached alarming levels and in a city such as Venice, which is characterized by the phenomenon of the gentrification, it seems crucial to look at the issue of social housing from a new perspective of both pertinence and creativity.
One of today's biggest problems, especially in terms of social housing, is that the family has been the only reference. What happens when these conditions are no longer justifiable?
The case of the Gino Valle residences at Giudecca island allows us to consider this question in more depth; it is not just about adapting, in many cases of modern housing complexes, it’s also about protection. However, is it possible to consider these buildings not only as architectural masterpieces, but also as containers for interpreting the needs of the present?
In the Giudecca complex, if on the one hand the duplexes and the tower typologies still continue to respond to a given need, on the other hand the twenty triplex - like the one of the Unfolding Pavilion - seem oversized compared to the contemporary family standards. Similarly, the galleries, representative elements of a collective dwelling, are often inanimate and deprived of the principles on which Valle was conceived in 1987, as an "immense collective apartment". Reconsidering the priority of recovering the image of a small, active, participatory town means redensifying these spaces through a new concept based no longer on "private property", but instead on the idea of "use".
Based on this consideration, The Mail is an utopic missive sent by the City of Venice. The letter welcomes the winners of a call for an experimental cohousing called CO’ Valle created in 2020, readapting the twenty triplex units of the Gino Valle complex.
Emilia ROSMINI PhD, architectural researcher and designer, teaching assistant in various courses of Urban and Architectural design, in recent years she attended international competitions, congresses, festivals and architectural events, receiving prizes and mentions. She carried out research at ETSA Seville in 2013 and at ETSA Madrid in 2017, focusing on the relationship between social inclusion, experimental housing and built heritage. Italian by birth, Spanish by adoption, she moves between Rome, Seville and Madrid.
Emiliano ZANDRI is an architect based in Rome and is teaching assistant in Urban and Architectural design at the Sapienza University of Rome. In 2016 he co-founded ZA², a brotherhood photographic project. As architect, he took part in several international competitions, workshops and architectural exhibitions.

LUIGI MORETTI
VILLA LA SARACENA
Photographic reportage of La Saracena designed by the architect Luigi Moretti in Santa Marinella (RM). Even if the villa has been documented in a state of decay (the photos have been taken on March 2017), it is now object of an architectural restoring.
Photography by Emiliano and Lorenzo Zandri (ZA²).
La Saracena was commissioned to Luigi Moretti by Francesco Malgieri, journalist of Corriere della Sera, for her daughter, Luciana Pignatelli d'Aragona Cortez. It is annexed to the so-called unfinished triptych of Santa Marinella, comprising the Califfa and Moresca villas. The yard began on 1956 and finished on December 1957.

SENSIBILE COMUNE
Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea - 14/22 gennaio 2017
a cura di Ilaria Bussoni, Nicolas Martino, Cesare Pietroiusti
con l’assistenza curatoriale di Laura Perrone
Ingresso gratuito alla mostra: Via Gramsci n.69-71
www.sensibilecomune.org
Mostra, convegno, festival, evento, laboratorio, "Sensibile comune.

Unfolding Pavilion 2018
The Works
The Unfolding Pavilion has invited the most unique members of the Little Italy network to create works capable of reacting to both Gino Valle’s building and the specific space occupied by the Pavilion.
The invited architects were asked to produce original objects/installations, that puts in dialogue their personal body of work to the Giudecca Social Housing - to one or more of its elements/spaces/representations, to the whole building, to the relation of the project with its urban surroundings, etc. - and so to use the Venetian condominium as a sort of tool to reflect on their own practice, just as the representations of Renaissance ideal cities served as tools to experiment with the new technique of perspective.
