The Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced a recall of certain Enfamil brand baby formula products on Monday, citing contamination of Cronobacter sakazakii.

The agency said the Enfamil products recalled is the Nutramigen A+ LGG Hypoallergenic infant formula. The recall affects the standalone 561-gram product and also the pack of four.

The batch of products included in the recall have an expiration date of Jan. 1, 2025.

With that story of the person buying a pregnancy test being sent formula samples in the mail getting traction recently, it needs to be pointed out that this is not new.

With my most recent pregnancy in 2020, I started receiving formula samples in the mail from Similac and Enfamil in my first trimester. My email was quickly passed between pregnancy and baby specific companies and my inbox became flooded with emails advertising countless products and services.

I was harassed by 2 cord blood storage companies after briefly browsing one of their websites. After my baby was diagnosed as terminal, I had a phone conversation with a rep who tried to convince me multiple times to store her cord blood for my future babies.

After Sam was born/died, within a week of my delivery I received a congratulations letter and offer from Gerber Life Insurance in the mail, also without my consent. I continued receiving formula coupons despite reporting her death to the companies multiple times, and even now I receive toddler formula coupons from time to time.

Amazon has tracked my purchases to the point that they know I (should) have a 19 month old and will advertise me toddler and baby things for girls, despite never having linked an AGAB to my Amazon account.

This level of capitalistic surveillance of pregnancy in the US specifically is not new and with the repeal of Roe v. Wade it should terrify you.

A package labeled, “To Mr. and Mr. Alastor, From Your Friends at MultaVer Solutions,” delivered by a familiar looking slime sinner, came for the Alastors. The box had a note on it that said, “Congratulations. Trust me when I say you might appreciate most of these. Just don’t ask me how I knew. -A Friend.”

It was full of various baby products from the registry (mostly those Buck neglected to include a link to), all made by various brands owned by MultaVer Solutions, including Multaver Baby Fabric Diapers, MultaVer Medical Diaper Cream, MultaVer Home Cabinet Locks, and a MultaVer Baby SleepTite Baby Monitor (“The Dumbest Baby Monitor on the Market! Internet Free!”). The diapers had music notes, old radios, and deer antlers printed on them.

Unsigned letter from someone who talks like they know more than Alastor does about what Alastor wants for his baby, accompanying a package full of products from a single brand that apparently produces a vast variety of baby products? Well, that's creepy.

He's heard about brands that do things like this. He read a conversation between expectant mothers about receiving unasked-for formula samples from a company that hadn't been told about the mothers' pregnancy. One mother reported getting the package before telling her own family she was pregnant. Another reported receiving the baby formula weeks after a miscarriage.

One of many things Alastor likes about radio: advertisers can't buy the audience's private information. There's no peering through the radio receiver to see which listeners are knocked up.

God knows how this "MultaVer Solutions" got hold of Alastor's information, but he doesn't appreciate the breach of privacy or the "I know better than you, trust me" attitude. He and his alternate already picked out a baby monitor they wanted; they didn't add cabinet locks because they didn't (and still don't) think it's necessary; and they hadn't put any cloth diapers on their list because, like the baby's other clothing, they'd been planning to homemake them. The diaper fabric patterns are, admittedly, pretty cute; but that just means either an actual person helped custom-tailored this intrusion, or some digital algorithm out there has gotten that good at reconstructing Alastor's digital fingerprint and identifying what he likes. He doesn't like either possibility.

He quarantines the items to scan them for any unexpected signals—electrical or magical—and then he'll take them to Cal to decide what they want to do with them. And then he's going to look up this MultaVer Solutions and any other brand names they own to make sure they don't buy anything else made by this nosy baby goods monopoly.
