I think one of the main issues with leftism existing in the liberal west is that no matter how hard they try most “leftists” maintain hope in utilizing the established system. This is because the unfortunate reality of political ideology is that you need to have some level of privilege to study it. This is why the stereotype of leftism in the west is that of the middle class, white, Guevara t-shirt wearing leftist. This is also why a large portion of the left in the west believes violent revolution is wrong, and the only valid revolutionary action is done through voting.
The left in the west has a large amount of people who’s privilege has allowed them to grow a more favorable vision of the establishment. Maybe the police are fair to them, maybe their proposals are taken seriously sometimes, and maybe they see representation from people who look and speak like them. Unfortunately their judgment is clouded by privilege, and that same privilege gives them a larger platform. Their passivity is looked upon favorably by the establishment so they might play into it, tease it, even put some proposals down for a vote. They know this passive revolution isn’t a threat, but if they can keep the left suckling on their established system they don’t have to worry.

ERNESTO GUEVARA | Rosario 1928 - Bolivia 1967

Movie poster by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko for Ernesto (2017)
The first film in forty years to be co-produced by Cuba and Japan, it recounts the story of Freddy Maymura Hurtado who was a Bolivian man of Japanese descent. He joined the freedom fighters lead by Che Guevara in 1966 and was martyred at the age of twenty five. Aiming to rid his world of injustice and the gap between the rich and powerful and the rest of us the inspiring film reminds the viewer of the need for living with a purpose. Ernesto means 'serious,' but was also Che Guevara's first name.
