Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity 1996
"Virtual Insanity" is a song by British funk band Jamiroquai, released on 19 August 1996 as the second single from their third studio album, Travelling Without Moving. The song interpolates parts of Jocelyn Brown's 1984 post-disco hit "Somebody Else's Guy". "Virtual Insanity" was a number-one hit in Iceland and reached number three on the UK Singles Chart, as well as becoming a top-10 hit in Finland, Ireland, and Italy, the song also climbed to number 38 on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart upon the single's release in the US in 1997. The song also earned the band a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. Thematically, the lyrics are concerned with issues like overpopulation, human genetic enhancement, eugenics and ecological collapse. In the beginning of the song's album version, a sound that is sampled from the 1979 sci-fi horror film Alien appears. It is the sound sequence when the S.O.S. signal appears on the screens of the spaceship Nostromo at the start of the film. The music video for "Virtual Insanity" was directed by English filmmaker, director, and screenwriter Jonathan Glazer. At the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards it won 4 out of 10 nominations; Breakthrough Video, Video of the Year, Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography. In 2006, it was voted 9th by MTV viewers in a poll on music videos that 'broke the rules'. In addition to heavy rotation on MTV and other music television networks, the video for "Virtual Insanity" has amassed more than 250 million views on YouTube as of August 2023 and has seen renewed attention on TikTok, gaining millions more views through various memes and remixes. It has been parodied, referenced, remixed or imitated in countless music videos, television shows, and internet memes. On a personal note, I love each and every one of you who tagged the poll as "#rearranging furniture" in your reblogs! 😂💖 "Virtual Insanity" received a total of 80,7% yes votes!

Gratifying to see more artists wearing this red "Artists4Ceasefire" pins at the Oscars in contrast to the Yellow Ribbon
Tumblr media
Here's a list of celebrities who have won this pin at Oscars so far as we know:
- Ramy Youssef
- Ava Duvernay
- Mahershala Ali
- Mark Ruffalo
- Billie Eilish
- Eugene Lee Yang
- Misan Harriman (The After)
- Quannah Chasinghorse
- Swann Arlaud (Anatomy of a Fall)
- Milo Machado-Graner (Anatomy of a Fall)
- FINNEAS
- Riz Ahmed
- Kaouther Ben Hania (Four daughters)
Note: Boygenius members previously wore the pin to the Grammys
And of course, just because an artist did not wear the pin, it does not mean they aren't allies of Palestine. Jonathan Glazer and James Wilson gave speeches addresses the genocide of Palestinians in their winning speeches.

Jimmy Woodard and Robert Townsend in Hollywood Shuffle (Robert Townsend, 1987) Cast: Robert Townsend, Anne-Marie Johnson, Craigus R. Johnson, Helen Martin, Starletta DuPois, David McKnight, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Lou B. Washington, Brad Sanders, John Witherspoon, Eugene Robert Glazer, Lisa Mende, Dom Irrera. Screenplay: Robert Townsend, Keenen Ivory Wayans. Cinematography: Peter Deming. Production design: Melba Katzman Farquhar. Film editing: W.O. Garrett. Music: Udi Harpaz, Patrice Rushen. Fifteen years ago, Vanity Fair ran an article about how Robert Townsend's Hollywood Shuffle hadn't aged in its then-30 years of existence. But in their essentials, neither the article nor the movie has aged since then. Granted, some of the movie's satiric targets, like the TV reviews of Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert or the search for Eddie Murphy clones, are no longer fresh, and movie and TV stereotypes are somewhat more self-consciously maintained today. Now, Townsend would probably be lampooning the Magical Negro stereotype instead of the pimps and hoods that his comedy centers on. And Hollywood Shuffle is a little more brash and raw than might win critical favor today. Still, as a wakeup call for Black artists and for white audiences, the movie still rings true and cuts deep.

"Hollywood Shuffle" (1987) is a comedy film written and directed by Robert Townsend. Keenon Ivory Wayans assisted with writing, and Carl Craig and Richard Cummings Jr. were executive and associate producers, respectively. This movie is one of the most necessary films ever made as it gives a comedic look into stereotypical roles by African-Americans in Hollywood. The cast comprises many great actors, including Robert Townsend, Keenon Ivery Wayans, Anne Marie Johnson, John Witherspoon, and Helen Martin. In addition, there were numerous supporting actors throughout the movie, and many were still very early in their careers. Whenever one critically analyzes African-Americans in Hollywood films, the portrayals, and representation of black people are historically spurious and offensive. Robert Townsend masterfully illustrates the struggles of black actors in the film industry and how many often battled with their conscience and morals. However, "Hollywood Shuffle" is a silly movie, and Townsend uses these negative stereotypes to make his point comedically. In an age where movies are seeing remakes, I think "Hollywood Shuffle" is due for an update. I highly recommend this movie for viewing. Director: Robert Townsend Writers: Robert Townsend, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Dom Irrera Starring Robert Townsend, Anne-Marie Johnson, Keenen Ivory Wayans, John Witherspoon, Helen Martin, Craigus R. Johnson, Starletta DuPois, David McKnight, Lou B. Washington, Lisa Mende, Dom Irrera, Eugene Robert Glazer, Bobby McGee, Nancy Cheryll Davis, Paul Mooney Storyline Aspiring actor and hot-dog stand employee Bobby Taylor (Robert Townsend) catch the ire of his grandmother (Helen Martin) for auditioning for a role in the regrettably titled exploitation film "Jivetime Jimmy's Revenge." When Tinseltown Studios casts Taylor in the title role, he has a series of conflicted dreams satirizing African-American stereotypes in Hollywood. He must reconcile his career goals with his desire to remain a positive role model for his little brother (Craigus R. Johnson). https://www.daarac.ngo https://www.daaracarchive.org/.../hollywood-shuffle-1987... Available on Blu-ray and streaming services.

Finally finished LFN. The whole ending could have been different if they’d just sent dude out in a flack vest. Why was he not in a flack vest??? That does not fit. At all.
Whatever. It was still a profound moment. And knowing this show, they thought of that and it was a way to retire him and put her chess pieces into play in a way she couldn’t refuse. Underhanded, but so’s this entire show- underhanded is the MO.
I missed Madeline a lot in S5, but the closure they gave her made sense and fit the story. Also if she had survived into 5 it would have been an entirely different story- basically the whole place falling apart and chain of command breaking down goes to show just how intrinsically vital Madeline was to running Section because she truly kept all the gears turning and made sure the people were well oiled to do so. Without her web and finesse, Operations couldn’t turn the crank- at all. Well, at least they didn’t have to spend too long apart from each other.
Basically, if this show is as clever as its been from the start, Mr. Jones had a flack vest on and is now “shadow” leading center (especially after freely showing his face so much- you have to cover that back up). It was the best way to both cover his tracks, keep all the big bosses happy, and dip out of Nikita’s life back to a safe distance while she essentially ‘trains’ as new Operations. Because honestly- how could she be expected to automatically inherit his position if 1. He’s dead, and 2. It’s not a direct hand-over?? It’s impossible- they’d squeeze her out in a second. He’s back to where he began this crazy story, holding down the fort and keeping a watchful eye until she’s ready.
Is it fair to Nikita? Hell the fuck no. But Jones wasn’t exactly living a terrible life in his position- casually keeping his other daughter around (which we unfortunately saw next to none of if that was really her to begin with) in a very nice house with no apparent stress. It would be easy for Michael and Nikita to not do too badly for themselves when he’s ready to come back- they could live that life and maybe even have kids. And then when she’s found a worthy successor, she can fake her death to push her successor like her dad did and covertly retire. Happily ever after, I guess— as much as one can have in that line of work.
This is a series that is both a tragedy and the promise of a comedy. It walks such a fine line, often with more leaning towards tragedy. But with such a carefully crafted story, and Nikita and Michael knowing each other *so well* by the end of it that he can burn the whole house down without a word and Nikita can just go with it because she *knows* there’s a damn good reason and that ends up being *right*……you, quite frankly, never see that kind of unshakeable trust portrayed neither on screen or even in books anymore- not as realistically and securely as they’ve done in La Femme Nikita. It’s refreshing, terrifying, but also the only truly reliable thread of hope in the whole show. A thread that comes out the other side and continues to roll on beyond the last episode into the great, blank unknown of post-finale.
It’s such an interesting contrast to Madeline and Operations who are very much a proto Michael and Nikita- a similar dynamic, a similar success rate when working together, but still…..those two really were tried and true spies, and Cold War spies at that. Their lack of complete trust ultimately made them a flawed pair, which finally piled up into mutual self-distruction.
We see, then, the completion of Madeline and Operations in the true success of Michael and Nikita (which is why the two of them likely shook Madeline and Operations to their core). While they did extremely well but their inherent flaws and circumstances caused them to fail, their torched picked up by Nikita and Michael and Nikita and Michael’s subsequent success also means Madeline and Operation’s success. And I think there’s a nice, cathartic poetry in that.
Ok, I’m done rambling. An excellent show with so much to think about and so much to still learn. The timing of the rewatch, for me, was excellent. This was a show I saw the original premiere of when I was in elementary school, and I watched it (with some spotiness in 5) to the very end. It taught me a lot then, and it’s still teaching me now. Maybe that’s a little crazy, but……anyway, they don’t make tv shows like that anymore. Although, nothing has ever, past nor present, been quite like La Femme Nikita.

Does any of this look kinda familiar? When I was posting about the Genomex set a distant memory from the past came up, and I recalled that there was a show that seemed to use the same set as Mutant X. I recall being struck by randomly seeing Genomex in another TV show at the same time Mutant X was airing. I am obsessed with random things that connect to other things, especially things I really like.
I remembered the show was called La Femme Nikita which was about a spy, and there was a guy named Operations who seemed to be in charge of some organisation that used the same set. Was he Nikita’s boss, was he her enemy? I don’t know. I always felt like I should watch the show more than casually because it has that same kinda aesthetic that I really dig.
I did a hunt for images to prove that I am not just a lunatic (I am a lunatic who is good at noticing things, actually). And here’s some proof! And look, they even have The Chair (you know the one).
Both shows were filmed in Toronto and were Fireworks shows. Nikita finished in the late 90s, Mutant X probably started filming in 2000. I have heard that the sets were all kept in a warehouse someplace in Toronto. Dear imaginary readers, I would die very happy if I could visit that place some day (I have been to the outside location for Genomex on two occasions already). If anyone has any information about the place: stories, photos, other shows that used the same sets, I’d be eternally grateful.
I also remember some connection with The Sentinel, but I honestly can’t remember what that is. Perhaps it will come to me later.
I’m sure everybody who knows me knows I’m pretty nerdy. But this post is just peak nerd. Things like this bring me pure joy, even though literally nobody else cares about these shows any more. Gosh, I miss the Mutant X fandom, goddamned stupid as it might have been. I wonder what happened to those people. Was I the only one who didn’t move on and become a well-adjusted individual? This blog is my pride and joy. I continue it just so i can look back on my posts myself later, and go: “ha, yeah”.
