So Max made the weird decision to cancel OFMD, the show that was one of the most in-demand shows on the platform, of the highest score, that was basically its cash cow, worth hundreds if not thousands of subscribers, and thought that was a good idea?

to be clear, i went into ofmd season 2 fully expecting to feel empathy for izzy. even went in expecting the narrative to show empathy for izzy. what i was not fucking expecting, especially so soon, was to see so many of the characters showing empathy for him. and yet what a relief it is to see. everyone say thank you david jenkins.

I'm already so sick of how the fallout of ofmd season 2 has snowballed into people on here going "fandom these days just can't handle Bad Things happening in media-- newsflash, characters have to get hurt and die, grow up!" all condescending like. First of all, in the context of Izzy, most people I've seen discuss his death agree that they would've accepted and enjoyed his death if it had just been handled appropriately, and also. "You just can't handle bad things happening to your fave!" Bruh. We were all partying it up when Izzy lost his fucking leg and was suffering physically and mentally. It can be FUN to see your blorbo suffer!
And that is just one example of a larger trend on this site-- people are really gonna come onto the "we love putting our blorbos in the blender and watching them struggle and suffer" site and say "kids these days can't handle Bad Things happening to their blorbos." Sorry, but that's just nonsense. Fandom loves their fix-its, but they also love shattering their faves. The problem has never been Bad Things happening in general, but HOW those things are framed within the narrative and how that narrative is told. The problem is when something is out of place in its genre, or when it goes against a promise the show has made, or when suffering is used flippantly and uncaringly, or when a character suffers and suffers and then just when they've finally caught a break, they're kicked down again, just for a cheap tug at your heartstrings.
Both within the context of ofmd AND in a wider fandom context, fandoms LOVE when our blorbos are hurt, as long as our blorbos are hurt RIGHT.
... And I think it sure is Something that a fandom can have a rampant issue with fans of a character being harassed and sent death threats and that's just "normal fandom being fandom" but god forbid people feel Emotions. About a Character and a Show. And dare to react by... just Offering Criticism! No, death threats are "fandom culture that comes with the territory," but if you vent post or criticize a writing decision in media, THAT'S being "hysterical" and "overly emotional" and "truly frightening behavior!" I just LOVE (big sarcasm) how back when people were getting doxxed and threatened for liking a guy, the fandom was all *cricket noises,* but NOW suddenly everyone is "terrified and exhausted by fandom's volatility" and "concerned about the fragile mental health of fans" when you simply say "damn that episode sucked and I sure am sad about it."
The OFMD fandom was toxic as fuck for a year and a half and continued to be toxic as fuck for all the airing of S2, so hardly surprising that the aftermath of S2 appears to be... toxic as fuck.
Least surprising thing in the world is that the people who hated Izzy and passively or actively supported driving his fans out of the fandom for "ruining it for everyone else" now think his fans should leave the fandom if they are so upset and stop leveraging "baseless criticism" at the show that is "ruining it for everyone else." They have normal not-at-all-parasocial relationships leading them to directly @ David Jenkins and thank him for a season that somehow managed to be both flawless and have all its flaws blamed on MAX, but those wretched Izzy stans have horrible-evil-parasocial relationships making them harass the crew by *footage not found*
If Mr. Jenkins decides to go scroll the #ofmd s2 tag on tumblr and stumbles across me - a random blog and icon - outlining how I think he fucked his show up, that's pretty clearly on him? This is tumblr. I have no relationship with this man or obligation to tailor every word I say as if he's bound to see it and going to take it personally???
I'm actually a big proponent of "Don't @ the cast and crew about pretty much anything" because the same fandom mentality that makes you think you can randomly ask him about your headcanon like you're chatting is what all these people are melting down about if someone directly goes "hey you killed my favorite character and that makes me mad!" - same fucking people, same fucking parasocial relationship. The standard of "only @ them for good things" is the flimsiest fucking line, as any ao3 writer who has received unsolicited "constructive criticism" or "advice" can tell you.
If we want to snidely get into "what this is really about" well it's the same fucking thing it was before:
People substituting subjective opinion as objective fact with zero self-awareness of doing so. "I liked this so it's good." "I didn't like this so it's bad." "I got bad vibes from that character so he was clearly written to be horrendous and unlikable." "I sympathized with this character so anyone suggesting he has flaws is demonizing him."
Or the deepest circle of fandom hell: "I think [insert identity] rep is so important and this piece of media fits into however I personally define 'good rep', therefore it is flawless and/or morally significant enough to be above criticism."
...which, yeah, leads to temper tantrum levels of fandom infighting, especially since people online express, fairly frequently, "I didn't like it because it was bad" and then present evidence for their point. And also a lot of fandom likes bad TV. Or even just mediocre TV that's entertaining.
I personally was not going to be happy about any person beyond one-offs, blatant villains, and background randoms dying because "they had to" (for their own arc or someone else's) because I fundamentally think if you believe you've written yourself into that corner in a workplace comedy that's built around a main romance arc... you're kinda stupid. Yes, even if it's pirate themed. Enough injuries have been walked off and lampshaded to confirm that part is aesthetic.
The fandom wiki for The Office lists 11 deceased characters. Three of them are fictional characters who die in an action-movie episode. Two are one-offs that get named dropped seasons later as having died offscreen. One of them is an offscreen cat, who appears to have had a more significant death plotwise and emotionally than any of the humans, and another is a woman who literally exists as a picture someone makes up a personality for and then discovers the real woman died. The most significant character on the list is a temp boss that got a four episode story arc about being a useless idiot who died in the hospital after a basketball dunking accident.
That is a show that ran for 9 seasons and over 200 episodes. It's pretty universally regarded as good, and the cringe asshole boss getting genuinely moving emotional beats is a big part of that. I think we can maybe pretty confidently say that reflecting the random realities of death is not essential to every story.
If OFMD wants to be evaluated as a hard-hitting drama or a queer story about the struggle of piracy against the Evil Empire, I will compare it to Black Sails instead of The Office. I just don't think David Jenkins is going to enjoy that comparison.
I'm not going to lower my standards because [insert rep reason the show must absolutely be a wild success here].

OFMD SEASON 2 EP 8 SPOILERS
Listen obviously I'm super sad about Izzy dying, but I've had some time to think on it in the last 8 hours that I've been at work, and I have some things to say about his death to the show creators and actors (even though they'll probably never see this lol):
Thank you for redeeming him and letting him redeem himself before he died.
Thank you for giving me time this season to learn to love him as the complex character he is, not just the antagonist he portrayed before he learned to love and be loved.
Thank you for killing him in a way that meant something (Ed being able to move on from the Blackbeard persona) rather than just killing him (or anyone else) to up the views.
Thank you for letting him die at peace with himself and with the world and with his family.
Thank you for having his family give him a proper burial and goodbye, rather than just having him die and then changing the scene to one he is no longer in.
Thank you for giving me what I think is the first time where one of my favorite characters has died/been killed, and it was done in such a way that I didn't go through the five stages of grief, I saw it happen and was immediately awash with acceptance (even though I was still sad) because I knew the character had done their best, and they were at peace, and their death wasn't specifically an end for them, but rather a beginning for others, and a good one at that.
So thank you David Jenkins, and Taika Waititi, and Con O'Neill, and everyone else who helped develop Izzy Hands into the wonderful character that he was. Thanks for giving him, even for a small amount of time, la vie en rose.

So I’m going to be really honest right now. I’m devastated with the final cancellation of Our Flag Means Death, I had such certainty that it’d be picked up that this scenario never crossed my mind. It’s not fair and I’m angry. This show meant so much to me and I’m so grateful for the things I’ve learned about myself because of this show. I know for many people that seems crazy that a show could lead to the changes that I’ve made in my life but well it’s the truth. I want to first and foremost say thank you to everyone who created this thing that I hold so dearly. And on the off chance they see this insignificant post THANK YOU. From the bottom of my heart I am grateful.
OFMD made me be able to acknowledge my queerness to myself and I’ve been able to come out to special people in my life and that was something I never thought I’d ever do. I remember watching Calypso’s Birthday for the 3rd time and it just hit me that you can be happy and queer. Being raised as a conservative evangelical dealing with my queerness was a net loss in my mind. I was scared of what I would lose coming out. That’s why I relate to Stede so much, I was okay following the path of least resistance and that was what my family and the church wanted for me. This show showed me what life after the closet could be if I was brave enough to choose it. OFMD made me so happy that I could no longer inhibit myself.
It wasn’t just the main relationship that did that. It was the crew of the Revenge. The love and kindness of this show gave me a sense of what I want in a community. In January I had a bad flare up in my chronic illness and because of this community I felt safe enough to trust my friends to help me. And it was hard and I had to sit with myself. I find I internalize fiction and stories to process my own shit and OFMD has been my go to for teaching me how to be kind to myself. I love this show and its kindness and this fandom. And as much as I’m broken hearted about these turn of events I’m okay because what we have is special.
So all of this to say is thank you. Thank you David Jenkins and Rhys Darby and Taika Watiti and everyone else. I doubt it will but if this reaches any of yall know that you made a great and good impact on my life and future.
And last but not least…. FUCK YOU HBO/WB AND FUCK YOU CAPITALISM AND THE STREAMING MODEL!!!!

Dear OFMD,
I wasn’t sure who to address this to, at first. There are so many options, so many people instrumental in the creation of this show that means so much to me and so many others. David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Vico Ortiz, Alex Sherman, and the rest of the producers, directors, writers, cast and crew. I did try to list out everyone, but it took up the whole first page. My social media follows exploded when I began watching.
The thing is, I’ve never quite been comfortable in my skin. I knew something was off about my gender as early as 8, possibly earlier, but eight is when I remember actually thinking that I wasn’t a girl for the first time.
I wasn’t a boy, either, but it was the eighties, and I didn’t know the term non-binary, or that gender was as much a brain thing as a body thing. So I shoved it down, along with the thought that the kids at my school should hurry up and learn the lessons already so we could go onto the next thing and that I hated wearing dresses, except when I loved it.
And then, I just . . . didn’t think about gender for a long time. Not when trans people were the butt of all the jokes in the movies in the nineties, not when trans stories, real trans stories started getting told in the aughts.
Someone gave me the word agender, once, when I was curious and asked what might describe someone who felt neither man nor woman, and never had, and I went with that. I still go with that, or enby, whichever I’m comfortable with in the moment. I was forty. Thirty-two years of not even knowing I was looking for that word, and I was.
And then a year or so later, someone talked me into watching Our Flag Means Death.
I write. I’ve published. When you send a story out, you never know what other people are going to think of it, what symbolism they’re going to find, how they’re going to interpret this thing or that thing. So I don’t know if you realized when you finished filming the first season and sent it for edits, or finished the second season and watched us foam at the mouth for it, how the fans were going to react.
There are a lot more of us out in the world that don’t feel quite right in whatever gender box we’ve been put in than anyone realizes, I think. And I think a lot of us gender-weirdos are fans of this show.
It’s not just Stede, and his love for fine things. It’s Ed, with his hidden silk, and his softly admitting to “maybe” liking “a fine fabric.” It’s not just Jim being outed, and everyone going right back to normal after they figure out that that’s what Jim wants. It’s not even just Wee John’s wonderful performance as Calypso.
It’s also Wee John sitting down to sew and saying he used to sew dresses with his mom. It’s calling Izzy the ship’s “new unicorn” and it’s also Izzy wearing make up. It’s everyone wearing flowers.
It’s Spanish Jackie having nineteen husbands, and maybe some wives.
It’s a meme of any of the characters that’s just a screenshot and the word “gender” written across it.
It’s the concept of “assigned knives at birth”
And it’s the community that this show created to let us feel free to explore all of this. We can bounce ideas off of each other, we can explore new identities, and you - the cast, the crew, the writers of this show - you have given us a safe space to do so.
I’ve been on the outskirts of a lot of fan spaces. I’ve never wanted to step into them because at their core, they seemed so toxic and gatekept. I’ve never felt that from the fans here (we’re not perfect, and there are a lot of very angry arguments over things that I hope you never see).
So yeah, this is my love letter to Our Flag Means Death, the show that helped me figure out, at forty-three, that my gender is, well, me. And it doesn’t have to fit anyone else’s label.
Thank you for creating it.
Thank you for writing it.
Thank you for acting in it.
Jenn

Our Flag Means Death has been canceled and will not be renewed for a third/final season.
I cannot explain to you how devastated i am right now and how this is completely unfair to everyone who helped make this incredible show.
If you haven't heard yet, early today it was announced by David Jenkins that his successful show Our Flag Means Death will not be renewed for a third and final season and that this is the definite end of the series. And it was better explained by comicbook on Insta that the series was actually canceled by HBO Max.
This wasn't entirely explained in detail with why the decision was made to not make another season but David Jenkins said on Twitter that he and Taika Waititi were really going for creating the third season and that it was originally the plan for the entire series to have 3 whole seasons. Unfortunately this has changed and OFMD has at the moment officially ended as a continuing series.
I am so heartbroken at the moment and all us fans of the show are mourning as well and venting our full anger online wondering why the hell was this very successful series was canceled.
Before i joined the Good Omens community/fandom i was apart of the wonderful OFMD community and this community helped me eventually learn about GO and the similarities with these two stories. Most especially the archetypes of the blond haired boy, ie, Aziraphale and Stede falling fall the dark brooding boy, ie, Crowley and Edward.
HBO Max is absolutely ridiculous and horrible for doing this and i feel so badly for all the cast and everyone who helped work on the show. Not being able to see the proper ending to Stede, Edward and their amazing crew of 'The Revenge' is just absolutely horrible to experience.
Our Flag means death was one of the first queer shows i have ever watched on my own after coming out as Bisexual three years ago now and i cannot thank David, Taika, Rhys and everyone who was in this show for making it so fucking entertaining to watch. And especially Taika being a mixed Indigenous Māori like myself portraying himself as one of the most feared pirates of all time while also showing off a side to the infamous pirate that isn't fully known about, and even though the real life Blackbeard may of not been as queer as the show displays Taika did say the reason why the choose to make Stede and Ed a homosexual couple was infact to pissed off the homophobic historians.
Much isn't known about the true relationship between Stede Bonnet and Edward Teach when they were working together, they may or not have had a friendship or romantic relationship besides being workmates and Captains of their own ships, and i am certainly not praising the real life historical figures, because they were still bad people, i only praise this loosely based adaptation of their real life relationship.
Either way lastly i just want to say farewell to OFMD, i will keep this show near and dear to my heart, for the rest of the life, farewell Taika Waititi's Blackbeard and Rhys Darby's Stede Bonnet, you guys were beyond amazing for doing this. I will continue praising this show till the day i die and i now only have Good Omens to worry about and wait for now, so i will go and do that. BYe bye for now and Goodbye OFMD i love you very much and thank you for the memories.

I've been thinking about Izzy's death today-
(Thank you hyperfixation for THAT)
And I don't think it's his death that's really bothering the fandom. But rather the grieving process that is.
See, this season the writers worked incredibly hard to show us how important Izzy Hands is to the crew. Izzy Hands became arguably the most important character both to the crew and to us.
And had he been given a proper death and burial. (Say, 5-15 minutes of screentime dedicating to losing Izzy, and his crewmates and friends mourning him), I think we'd all be fine with it.
Sad, sure. Heartbroken? DEFINITELY. But ultimately fine with it.
But because the finale is so rushed, we only got like 90 seconds to say goodbye. After a whole season of them carefully showing us how much we should love Izzy and how much potential he has, they ripped it away.
And it feels manipulative. Because not the death, but the grieving is so short, it feels like the writers have been taunting us from day one, just for this emotional betrayal.
The Fandom agrees that the finale in general feels rushed. (Stede and Ed don't even get a moment to say goodbye to the crew they created for fuck's sake-) But I think Izzy's death is the place where we really feel that.
Granted, that's likely more HBO's fault than the writers, but one could make the argument, if you can't do it right, don't do it at all.
I LOVE our flag means death. OFMD means a lot to me, especially as a newly out queer person. Izzy hands in particular means a lot to me. And this ending disappointed me. But it didn't make me love the show any less. I still love David Jenkins, and all the writers, and all the actors, and everyone who made this show possible. I'm just . . . dissatisfied.
And I think a lot of us are feeling like that. We'll still come back for Season 3 (if there is one, I think there is one? Please tell me in the comments-) with open arms. But we're still a little displeased at the moment.
Please don't confuse our criticisms for hatred, because a lot of us do still LOVE the show, even if we're not content with the ending.
Now, a side note, to give all us Izzy's fans a little hope-
Do you guys remember the scene where Buttons turned into a bird? And the overall theme of that scene was that Edward needed to have a little faith?
Maybe that's the message David's trying to get across with this scene:
Tumblr media
Maybe we need to have a little faith right now.

It didn’t even occur to me until anon brought it up, and now I’m going to make it everyone’s problem /lh (special thanks to @celestialsblues, @demolitiondyke and @transgenderpirate for helping me with this! ilysm)
If you are of the camp to believe in race-blind casting in that Ruibo Qian and Madeleine Sami (who are Chinese and Fijian-Indian respectively) are to play Anne Bonny and Mary Read in the same vein that Taika who is Māori plays Ed, please then also consider the lengths the show went through to make sure that Ed is explicitly a man of color. His backstory, the abuse his Māori mother suffered under his white father who he subsequently killed, his motivations of becoming a pirate is stated by Oluwande in 1x01 “[Jim and I] do this (piracy) because we don’t have any other choice”, the microaggressions that Ed clearly experiences from white people, and needless to say, the way Izzy treats him as nothing but a poster child of monstrous existence and even threatens his life when he dared to deviate from his violent persona-- all of this connects to him being brown.
If Anne and Mary were to be portrayed by two woc, then their entire story would have to be overhauled in the same way Ed’s was. But why bother going through all that trouble when Chinese pirates are part of pirate history? Why take yet another two well known white/western pirates and make them woc when Zheng Yi Sao is right there and has the same level of notoriety as Blackbeard in Asia? Now I’m definitely not insisting it has to be her, if the show wants to make Ruibo’s character an original Chinese pirate queen that would be splendid too! If we are to have lesbian pirates, why does it have to be the two women who we (and historians) have already heavily speculated to be sapphic? At this point it’s not about re-imagining white characters as poc but rather focusing on creating original roles for poc or incorporating lesser known pirates of color. This also goes without saying: all of the characters within the show are definitely informed by their race, poc or otherwise, so this sort of casting goes entirely against the message that the show has made thus far.
Now you may ask, but they re-imagined Ed (and to a lesser extent, Stede) so why can’t they do the same for Anne and Mary?
OFMD has been under valid scrutiny for using two existing historical pirates as their leads and subsequently making them not only queer, but deeply sympathetic people. This has lead to tone deaf behavior from fans who actively went to the graves of these two pirates who infamously participated in the slave trade to honor them. Their real life counterparts are racist, and in Blackbeard’s case, also a rapist. Regardless of how anachronistic OFMD is, and no matter how hard they’ve tried to distance their narrative of Ed and Stede away from the horrors caused by their historical counterparts, it’s still ultimately not the smartest decision David Jenkins and his writers could’ve made. Several bipoc have expressed that it would’ve been better had David said he was inspired by Stede and Blackbeard’s story and thus made original characters with different names if they really wanted to create a separate narrative. This is something that is constantly on my mind as a fan of color: the origin of this show wasn’t great. But what’s done is done, we just have to be cognizant of this fact as we enjoy this show going forward. One of the things the show did do right was actively create original OFMD flags as well as the new mermaid flag in s2 that clarified that the story they’re telling is a love story above all else (though that didn’t deter fans from getting tattoos of the Jolly Roger, sadly).
The show has made Stede to be an entirely original character that shares nothing in common with the real Stede aside from being white and born from wealth and abandoned his wife and kids. They have made it painstakingly obvious that despite us possibly witnessing Stede becoming more pirate-like in s2, he’s still not going to adhere to the traditionally toxic masculine norms that piracy has set and will do things in his own way (albeit he’ll be a bit more hardened and experienced compared to s1). Stede is obviously still white and the show doesn’t shy away from the fact that he has his own internal biases that he has to overcome as a white person, which is a huge part of his journey narratively along with navigating being a gay man. Compared to the villains (who are all white), he comes from a place of ignorance and learned behavior from the racist upper class society he was born in that he plainly aims to reject, which is one of the many reasons why he’s compelling.
Ed on the other hand, has this entire myth about him being this infamously vicious and terrifying pirate, but this legendary status is contrasted with the fact that he is a brown man. Now what the show chose to do with him is brilliant because we as the audience already have a preconceived notion of who he is based on our understanding of history. But then the show tell us, no, that Blackbeard you know is not this Blackbeard, our Blackbeard is a gay Māori man who truly does want to be a good person but is pushed into this role of violence. The show even made it clear that Ed hasn’t killed anyone aside from his abusive white father, and at the most only maimed people. He uses his wit and intelligence and the art of fuckery to make things happen for him, while the person who carries out all the dirty work (i.e. the violence) and builds upon the Blackbeard myth is Izzy, a white man. Ed despises the weight of his legend and the weight of toxic masculinity and senseless violence that comes with the responsibility of being Blackbeard.
Ed and Stede cannot and should not be disconnected from their races as it’s an integral point of the show, just as it is for the rest of the cast and even minor characters like the servants who are all poc. Taika constantly talks about how the show asks the question of “what does it mean to be a man?” and we’re getting more of that answer as the seasons progress. What if we had lesbian pirates who have a similar story but they’re not connected to western piracy? Instead have them have their own nuanced narrative that connects deeply to their ethnicity? In my opinion, making two woc Anne and Mary just seems reductive; and in a way, wouldn’t David and his writers be making the same mistake that bipoc have rightfully said they made with Ed and Stede?

top 9 books 📚
tagged by @eddiebabygirldiaz (who I constantly pest to write a book and will add to this list if they ever do 😘) @thewolvesof1998 @cowboy-buddie @your-catfish-friend @spotsandsocks Thank you loves 💖
I can say right now that these are in the moment picks. Books are far too special to narrow down to just 9.
Anthem by Ayn Rand
A short read about a society where people have careers and partners chosen for them. Everyone is addressed in collective terms and the word I is never used. It's been a long ass time, but I legit cried the first time I read it.
1984 by George Orwell
Another one that has fascinated me since the first time I read it, way back in the dark ages of high school. Dystopian society where Big Brother is always watching. The main character is lured into going against the grain only to ultimately be punished. That's a terrible excuse for a summary but here we are.
The Santaland Diaries by David Sedaris
Some satire and humor as the author details his time working as an elf during the Christmas season. If you don't wheeze and piss yourself laughing I really don't know what to tell you.
Psycho by Onley James
Book 2 of a MM series about 7 psychopath brothers. I love the series but August is my favorite.
Moth by Lily Mayne
Book 5 of a human/monster romance series. Moth is my very special baby. Look at him wrong and I'll maim you.
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
jfc how do I even summarize this? IDEK... battles, romance, platonic love, soulmates. Just go read it and have yourself a good cry.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Dear gods what a fucking fabulous book. Chronicles the life of the (fictional) mysterious hollywood actress, Evelyn Hugo, with an absolutely insane twist at the end.
The Christmas Box Collection by Richard Paul Evans
Technically a trilogy but I can't separate them. This begins by telling the story of a young family who move in with an elderly widow. It then moves on to the details of who the widow was before, starting at the very beginning with how she met her husband, and the reason for the large marble angel statue on the property.
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
One of my favorites from my youth. All about friendship and imagination and what happens when that gets ripped away. Again, a shit summary, but it's a fantastic read. I have absolutely considered an au about this one.
Bonus: When the Summer's Over by Anna Pollock
A m/f romance that's cute AF, written by one of my besties @walnuts-and-berries, with cover art by my beloved wife @lizzie-bennetdarcy. Minnesota farm gal meets city boy and is instantly disgusted. gasp can they overcome their differences and make it work?
no pressure tagging @stereopticons @blackandwhiteandrose @buddierights @apothecarose @spotsandsocks @shortsighted-owl @mysteriouslyyounggalaxy @jesuisici33 @lizzie-bennetdarcy and anyone else I normally tag (or don't) who wants to play 🥰

Lot of articles tonight yall. Remember that every one of these shows you made an impact. It sucks cause a lot of them say "failed to find a home" which isn't true, we were robbed of one. But they still matter. The fact that they wrote anything at all shows we've been making waves. You still have power, as Chaos dad said. They didn't take that from you.

== Love Notes ==
Hey lovelies.
I know some of you found out the news later than others, and it's still very raw for you. I'm sending so much love your way, I know you had less support than some of us when you found out and that's got to feel terribly lonely. I've talked to some folks who were fine yesterday, and not okay today, and vice versa. Just know we are here luvs, we are here, and we're happy to talk. We're all going to be grieving for a while. So please be kind to yourselves. Give yourself some grace, it's okay if you can't do much right now. It's okay if you don't finish that gif set, or that artwork, or that fic. It's okay if all you do is get by today. You are doing enough. It's okay if you need to have distractions so you're doing twice as much as you did before. Distraction can help a lot with nervous energy. Give yourself room to be creative, and to let your mind wander, it could use a break. Take some time to laugh if you can. Laughter really can be healing. I wish I had some advice for tonight. I wish I had some better words of encouragement, I know it's all very hard right now for everyone.
Please just know a few things, and you've heard them before, but I need to hear them once in a while so I'm going to say them to you.
You are loved.
You are worthy.
You are enough.
You are beautiful.
You are kind.
You are exactly the way you should be.
You are loved.

I love your blog title. I love that when DJenks made his announcement this month, I went into the tags all morose and accepting defeat, and I saw you there still ready to fight, not giving up, ready for a marathon. Truly, that means SO much to me. A little bit of hope is a powerful thing to have, and we need people who are determined to keep that flame burning bright. So happy to have you in this fandom. You really do make a difference. 💕
Aw, thank you! I really appreciate it. And yeah, I'd almost forgotten about my blog title, which I've had for over a decade, and how hope really does embody me and everything I do.
The streaming landscape is in upheaval, things are changing by the week - even since our turbo-cancellation was announced, two other shows (cancelled for much longer) were saved. Like others have been saying, we were all mentally prepared for a marathon and realistically I don't think anyone can just call everything off after just two months when so many shows have to fight for years before getting a movie deal. I respect David - he told us that news so that we'd know that there's nothing more we can accomplish right now by shouting at streamers, and that we did make a difference. There WERE interested parties, we proved we were lucrative. But that does not mean the fight is over, it just means we need to change tactics and pivot to keeping the fandom active and vocal in the long-term, and bide our time until shifts in the industry open new doors for revisiting OFMD (like David Zaslav leaving, or Max going under, or another merger). That might be six months, or it might be six years. What I am certain of is that there's so much love and passion for this show from the cast and crew that everyone would be down to get the gang back together for a season 3 years down the road.
Basically, I have no doubts the fandom will persist - this fandom is composed of very enthusiastic and artistically talented people who have an unending well of inspiration to draw from. What I do think needs to be done though, that I'm seeing wane a bit on Twitter, is to ensure we direct that noise; most people have stopped using OFMD hashtags, which means our posts won't get noticed. Something that has been great is just how vehemently the fandom has gone after Max on pretty much every single promotional post they've made in the past few weeks - check any of them out, and you'll see 95-100% of the comments are OFMD fans using #DontStreamonMax and #FireDavidZaslav , plus the great new tagline 'Sell The Show, Let Us Go'. That is something that I feel is critical we keep up, as I think one of the most powerful means of influence we have right now is to hold this industry responsible for the cancellation of queer content and just quality content overall. That's one direction we can really put our might towards - toppling the WBD empire faster. Other things we can shout for are a physical release, 'The Jenkins Cut' of s2ep8, deleted scenes/bloopers, merchandise, etc. Max is being absolutely idiotic right now in a way that shoots themselves in the foot, because they're holding onto this IP that could have been their lifeline for keeping subscribers and stock prices up, and not only did they cancel it but they're not even maximizing on the rights they refuse to sell by promoting it or making merch of it, anything that could continue to bring in revenue for what they KNOW without a doubt is one of the best performing shows they've ever had on their platform. Them trying to forget OFMD exists is the nail in their own coffin, because it's the only reason a whole lot of people ever did business with Max in the first place.
So, the long and short of it is, I'll never stop having hope for the return of our show! David said we got the attention of this industry, and we've proven our worth. It's just a really unstable landscape right now, so we need to be patient. It's annoying to see these streamers invest in less successful and more expensive shows, but I think they're all panicking to stay afloat even though they're not making decisions that could help them there. The dust needs to settle. If we can show that there's still a loud and passionate fanbase in a year, in three years, then they will revisit us. We need to keep calling out WBD and Max, we need to keep using hashtags to be heard, and just try to settle into a rhythm that we can maintain long-term. We still have a bunch of BTS to see from Samba, and we will have WJW with David at some point. I think it's important that we DON'T request any season 3 info from him, because that's what jeopardizes the possibility of that storyline then ever getting made. I'm seeing some people on Twitter start to burn out or fall into a state of sad acceptance and if you need to do that for your health, that's fine. But I don't want that mindset to spread throughout the fandom. Our outlook, our words, do have the power to become reality - if we sit back and wave the white flag, then that seriously hurts our chances of ever getting the show back. But if we can carry on like it's just a season hiatus, continuing to demand the question 'ok so WHEN *taps watch*' then our insistence can help make season 3 a reality.
