rough beast ganondorf design + sketches + notes design combines the typical boar form (dark beast + cloud form from botw), the oni one (demon king gan) hint at the draconic one to come but keep part of his humanity with his clothing being mostly intact
as the battle with Demon King Ganondorf comes to an end, the sages previously knocked out start to wake up again, he is cornered and hurt and as fear of being imprisoned, tortured and exploited overwhelms him he transforms into the Beast form, breaking the arena you were fighting him in and him going for Zelda as she is the biggest threat (he remembers her destroying dark beast gan and she reminds him of sonia, who is the one you sealed his human body back in the day)
you and zelda flee through the cracks of the earth as more earthquakes happen with a beast at your heels thats now truly only out to kill as fast as possible as he burrows after you (first sketch)
the path takes you both just below the surface and as you are trapped in a dead end zelda shields herself and link with her light shield ability, which protects you both from immediate damage but cant soften the impact from gan charging at you, the impact of which breaks you all three to the surface and the battle takes place in the same spot as botws dark beast fight-
fight is very challenging as gan is smaller than the dark best version, jumping and charging at you while still able to cast spells, now truly throwing everything he can at you in the hopes of ending you both
fight ends with you shooting an arrow at zelda, her deflecting it at the right angle and it shooting off the enigma stone on gans forehead; he falls seemingly defeated and as zelda runs to take the stone away gan through sheer panic lunges for the stone triggering his dragon transformation and making way for the final fight
(summary of the end: in the final fight gan snatches up both link and zelda once he transformed into the black dragon and takes flight toward the sky, zelda falls from between his teeth and knowing that she cant get to link and help him in any way from the ground she, while falling, takes out the enigma stone she has kept in a save container in her backpack all this time and swallows it for her own transformation, in her white dragon form she takes active action and charges at gans head so link is freed, then supports him in the fight itself; at the end link plunges into dragon-gans mouth to reach the stone on the inside where he makes use of the 'medicine' previously made using the moonbloom taked from kogas secret lab, link and the stone are spit out and as gan reverses into a human and falls link is caught by zelda and he uses the second charge of it on her to bring her back as well; as all three fall from the skies as the sages have made their way through the tunnel that beast gan made earlier, they help link and zelda getting to the ground safely while the yiga do the same for gan - final end end isnt determined yet but this is waht i got so far and even if i have written this once before i felt it was fitting to do it again and no you cant tell me this is too much of a wishfulfillment thing bc it literally is just that as i cant actualyl change whats in the game, so even if im trying to make it all fit well together i can still do what i want nhakjdbgshdbhsjka)
(totk rewritten project)

I think what chronically upsets me about TotK is that. So much of it could have been so good with so little change.
I am into Zelda as a sacrificial, wondrous and silenced creature who must literally carry the blade of the hero as a wound inside her forehead and silently wait to be humanized again --and the injustice of a kingdom built on such a premice doomed to repeat itself, especially if the kingdom was founded on such dubious grounds to begin with. I am into Ganondorf forcing the present to reckon with the past through the most violent clash, forsaking everything that made him a person while sinking down into petty vindictiveness until no connection and no humanity remains, even though independance was what he was trying to protect in the first place. I am into Link as somebody trying to hold onto his most important connection to the world he once knew being used to force him into a conflict that has ultimately nothing to do with him (sure that's SS again but, it could have been explored even further). I am into Rauru as this self-important, self-made king who used his own association to godhood to live out a power fantasy that refuses to ever be acknowledge as such, maybe compounded by the fact he is one of the last of his species and feel, himself, the crushing weight of their fading heritage?
I don't know, the Tears of the Kingdom or something????
But, it all tragically depends on one crucial thing, which is to allow hylians to be wrong sometimes.
And it's wild to me how all of this incredible potential to comment on the series' history and the characters' role in it is just. Flattened into nothing, because Good must be Good and Evil must be Evil, and Hyrule must be righteous at literally every cost --even if it means nervously rewriting their own history through convoluted logic that rejects conflict and depth and vulnerability at every turn.

There's a meme going around to draw your comfort characters as the Steven meme.
Bowser's never been a comfort character for me, but thinking about how great an Illumination Smash Bros movie would be with these two having the dumbest greatest villain team dynamic has brought me SO much joy this year.

The four Sages were called back into the past by Terrako and they remember it happening
Tulin got to meet his hero, Revali, and decided to be just like him, adopting his idol’s brash personality and drive. He practises Revali’s Gale and eventually comes up with his own way to show off his mastery of wind, and when trouble hits his home he rushes to fix it on his own to prove how strong he has become and because, like Revali, he can’t stand idly by while he knows there’s still things he can do.
For Yunobo, when he goes back and meets his ancestor Daruk, he is a very timid and reactive Goron. He needs a push from others to come up with ideas and carry plans through, and when bad things happen to him his first instinct is to use his fire magic as a shield, to wait until the threat has passed by or somebody else has come to save him. But when he is sent back in time to Divine Beast vah Rudania, for the first time he has to be the one doing the saving. Daruk encourages Yunobo and is proud of him from the moment they meet, and it’s this support that gives Yunobo the confidence to help fight against Calamity Ganon, and to start YunoboCo when he gets home.
For Sidon, meeting his family from 100 years ago is bittersweet. He is proud that he was able to protect his sister, and it’s a comfort to know there is a version of him who will grow up alongside Mipha because of his bravery and fighting prowess. But as much joy as he got from seeing her, hugging her, and hearing her voice again, it just reminds him of how unfair her death was, of just how young she was when she died and how he is now older even though he’s the younger sibling. And at the end of the war, when he’s returned to their original time, he has to readjust to her absence all over again, and in light of that is it really a shock he’d have her statue moved further away from his home? And it also explains why he’s so desperate to protect Yona from the sludge.
Riju in AoC still a new ruler to her people, despite her accomplishments in BotW, she still feels guilty over the temporary loss of the Thunder Helm and isn’t sure if she can lead the Gerudo. She has a lot of confidence but is quick to falter when things go wrong. Urbosa treats Riju as a capable fighter despite her young age, and teaches her that she should never give up, to keep trying even when her resolve falters. There is always something you can do, even when it’s just stalling for time until help can arrive. Urbosa guides her in mastering the Thunderhelm, and possibly begins teaching her to summon lightning herself after Kohga attempts to steal it, and at the end of their time together Urbosa tells Riju she’s certain she’ll lead the Gerudo well. Riju treasured her time being mentored by Urbosa so much that she considers what Urbosa would do during the Upheaval in her diary in TotK.
I think the entire reason Tulin was added to the DLC was because the TotK team had already decided that Tulin was going to be the Sage of Wind, and that since the other sages were going to meet their Champions Tulin had to as well.
At some point in the years between Botw and TotK Teba, Tulin, Sidon, Yunobo, Riju and Patricia were summoned back in time by Terrako to aid the Champions during the Calamity, and even though those events took place in a parallel timeline and had no bearing on the world they returned to, the Sages’ personalities at the beginning of TotK are because of their experiences during the Calamity and the bonds they made with the Champions.
#totk#totk spoilers#botw#riju#yunobo#sidon#tulin#aoc zelda#age of calamity#bonus thought i cbb to make into it’s own post for all the tag reading girlies:#since the light dragon is canonically present during the calamity because zelda was sent back thousands of years..#technically the light dragon is present for both botw!calamity and the aoc!calamity#and there is now a timeline in which totk!ganondorf will emerge in a completely different way because of timeline shenanigans#and there are two zeldas except one of them is a dragon#my belief is that in the aoc!verse since you can play as calamity ganon a part of it survived and like. it’s main goal is to find a way#to excavate the cave it’s creator is in and like maybe it lures link and zelda down there or maybe nobody even notices until it’s too late#idk. because there weren’t two zeldas in the past the aoc!zelda can’t travel back in time so like. either her character development means#her secret stone manifests her light powers instead of her time powers or she never gets the secret stone idk#what’s important is that aoc’s version of totk in my head takes place a few years after the calamity and by the end of it the light dragon#turns back into zelda and suddenly there are two zelda’s who are practically twins and this alternate time-twisted botw!zelda gets to see#the champions and her father again at the cost of losing her link and her friends in the future and having no idea whether her original tim#line is safe or not. and link gets to doublewield the master swords or smth.#if we’re keeping the aoc-style gameplay rauru is one of the jokey-warriors like the great fairies were and it’s just his arm and like. mayb#a bit of his shoulder or something because it’s 100 years ago and there’s a bit more of him left

Another point of discussion on TotK is “it’s racist/colorist/colonialist/imperialist that Ganondorf, the sole cause of most of Hyrule’s problems, is a poc coded foreign man.” (Foreign to Central Hyrule, I guess.)
While you’re all super valid for being on guard about that… Rauru, the guy Ganondorf initially starts beef with in TotK, is also a poc coded “foreign” man.
Apparently there is concept art of TotK Rauru as an old white guy. That was probably based on the Rauru from OoT, and likely from earlier on in development. The final version of TotK Rauru is not only younger, but the coding of his people’s culture is both Mezo-American and [Correction] East Asian.
Tumblr media
Also, [Correction] the Zonai descended from the sky. They literally like… immigrated to Hyrule’s surface.(It’s not completely clear unless I forgot something but either Rauru and Mineru came down themselves recently or they are the descendants of immigrants.)
Now, pointing this out isn’t to imply poc cannot be imperialists. The Chinese Empire is a historical rollercoaster ride of imperialism spanning several dynasties. The Persian Empire, the Aztec Empire, etc. Hopefully it’s clear here Rauru is not somehow immune to skepticism just because he isn’t white coded.
It’s just… if the primary basis of the concerns that TotK is imperialist propaganda or colorist is the belief that Rauru is white coded… he’s not. Judging by his clothes and his people’s architecture and iconography, Rauru is coded as poc.
He’s not the only one, either. Zelda is white passing but overtly canonically mixed race. Sonia is brown. Zelda’s dad Rhoam was also visibly tan. Hylians overall have much more variance in skin tone and cultural coding than they did in previous games (Lurelin villagers, the stable folk, etc.) It seems Nintendo learned from OoT that one poc sage wasn’t enough to offset the colorist/racist implications of your main villain being a dude from the desert who takes over a country of pale people.
So all in all it really doesn’t seem like Ganondorf is being othered here… Rauru is also an “other” to the ancient Hylians but he’s their leader.

many cases of peopel talking about ganondorf fall into the trap of conceiving of deserts as barren and like somehow inherently less good or valuble than temperate areas. im sorry but you are wrong and if we are going to talk about him we must acknowledge he is wrong about the desert sucking.

@bokettochild (I’m @ing you because you’re probably the biggest person who reblogged and I want to get this around)
I think everyone misread the tone about Legend and Fable. Like, everyone is entitled to their opinion about them, I have no problem with that
The post was mostly dogging on my For You because they always came in pairs. I found the parallel funny, not disgusting or bad
The post wasn’t a bash at anyone who shipped those two and I’m sorry if it felt like that
But yeah, I hate when people take things the wrong way and jump on my back about it
I made the post about Time holding Wolfie and how that was attractive and the only thing people took from it were HIS GAUNTLETS MAKE HIM STRONGER like…that’s not the point of the post, but I digress
So yeah, everyone read the tone wrong and I’m sorry if it came across as rude. I’m literally on no one’s side with that ship. I mean, zelink is probably the most popular loz ship, but like…
Legend is aroace guys😔

So beyond the whole "Ganondorf is now Canonically a Femme Fatale" conversation, I feel like this part of the interview wasn't discussed a ton? Because apparently the original vision was that Zelda doubted whether to restore Hyrule at all (an interesting conflict! put it in the game next time!), and then got punched into the past and then seemingly was convinced of the necessity of her role and Hyrule as an entity (I'm extrapolating but it feels like it's what's being suggested, the direction they wanted for her arc, and it's basically what we get in the game).
And uhhh.
that certainly does not help the whole. imperialist. thing.
