I'm really flattered you asked! And I also have 50 pages of fics bookmarked and no idea where to begin aaahhhh! The story of the indie LARP (live acton role-playing game) Bjergtaget, or "mountain-taken", concerns a group of eleven Danish humans who are spirited away by the fae folk for a night. With the original author's blessing, very cool friend and writer @featherquillpen has rewritten the human cast of medieval Christians into a human cast of 17th century Sephardic Jews. I'm excited to be drawing fresh artwork for these characters, especially since the project has come with a large amount of fascinating research to do.

Way back in approx. December of 2013, I created a simple Word document to list my favorite fanfiction, so that if I wanted to reread something I could easily find it again. Five and a half years ago today, I uploaded it as a proper multifandom rec list, having realized how huge the scale of it had gotten and its potential as more than just a reference for my own use. And now, it’s time for the semiannual public version update once again, bringing the uploaded file up-to-date with my continuously-updated personal copy.

With this expansion, the list goes from 2,578 to 2,813 total fics, from 122 to 126 fandoms represented, and from ~53.4 million to over 58.7 million words. (There’s a stats section that goes into more detail on such things at the end of the list document, if you’re interested.)

Do you have any personal favorite crossover aus :3 ?

Of the ones I haven't written, my favorites are @featherquillpen's/Poetry's The Hork-Bajir Job (Animorphs and Leverage) and Teach Me How to Say Goodbye (Animorphs and Hamilton).

If you're asking about ones I have written, I'd say I'm happiest with the end result of Yellowjackets fusion and the Black Sails fusion, but I had the most fun writing the Pixar AU and the Animorphs-Animorphs crossover.

I finally managed to catch up on reading Dæmorphing by @featherquillpen now that it’s come to a close, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it. I ended up with very strong visuals in mind for these four during the final chapters, so have some Andalites on the house!

Design notes and extra art below the cut.

Aximili’s design was the quickest and easiest to pin down. He looks like the Andalite standard, to me. His design is probably the simplest of the bunch but I think it’s still my favourite.

Tobias was really fun to figure out: I gave them a gentler, more aquiline profile than Ax’s. I wanted them to look androgynous (to exemplify their frollis morph between Ax & Estrid) as well as to have a subtle beaky hawk-like quality to everything. Their mane also flips up at the back, a little like crest feathers. I slanted their colours more towards Ax’s own to keep their family resemblance (with a cool-toned nudge from Estrid).

Estrid became one of my favourite characters by the end of the story -- I thought giving her a bit of an ‘edgy teen’ heavy mane felt appropriate to her characterization. I like to think that she starts off with her mane styled back more professionally, until by The Presence of Justice it’s just all in her face, a total mess.

Mertil’s patterning was inspired by the mid-chapter art in Shattered, where both he and Gafinilan have cream-coloured patches across their bodies. That the piebald splotches streak into his hair and give the illusion of him going stress-grey is a fun bonus.

One of my favorite stories is @featherquillpen's (Poetry's) Daemorphing series, a daemon AU retelling of the Animorphs series. It's a wonderful (though often painful) scifi series with a lot of insightful writing about many topics, but especially anti-imperialism.

One of the earlier stories in Daemorphing contains a really lovely simile. I keep rotating it in my head and there is a really remarkable depth of meaning in this one piece of imagery. I wanted to break it down a little as a case study of how meaningful symbolism can be in prose. This feels especially relevant to me at the moment since there's been a bit of discussion on Tumblr recently about visualization during reading - I don't imagine any sights or sounds at all when reading unless I pause and purposefully try, so I really appreciate descriptive writing that has functions beyond communicating a mental image to the reader. (The imagery is purely metaphorical in this case, but imagery is capable of being both metaphorical and literal.)

My favorite simile appears in Seeing in Color, a retelling of Animorphs #19: The Departure. The most prominent antagonists in Animorphs are Yeerks: sluglike aliens that can climb into people's brains, read their minds, and control their bodies. The Yeerk Empire is using these capabilities to mount a secret invasion of Earth. Seeing in Color/The Departure is mostly about one of the Yeerks, Aftran, who believes humans can only be her enemy but is reaching a breaking point with the evil empire she has been raised in. At the climax of the story, the Animorph Cassie defies her teammates and allows Aftran to climb into her brain as a desperate attempt to make peace with at least one Yeerk.

And then this happens:

«Why did you do it?» I demanded as I demorphed. [...]

Cassie didn't even try to hide her emotions from me. She offered them up like a bouquet. «Because I'm sick of hurting people. I just wanted it to stop.»

«Sick of hurting people,» I said, lingering over each emotion: weariness, desperation, empathy for me. «Does that mean I'm a person?»

She offered them up like a bouquet. There is SO much meaning in this.

First, on the simplest level: bouquets are good things! When Aftran's narration uses a word with such positive connotations, it implies she likes the thing she's talking about. Cassie's feelings aren't burdensome or gross or pathetic, they're a nice present.

Thinking about what a bouquet looks like, this also gives me an idea of what Cassie is feeling. Bouquets are complicated and have a lot of different flowers, but they're designed so every element is visible at once and they make a harmonious whole. Cassie's feeling a lot of different things, but they're all part of one coherent picture. She's not conflicted or confused about what she just did or why she did it.

I believe this also gives a hint about Cassie's state of mind when presenting her emotions to Aftran (something Aftran would be fully aware of, at the moment). Gift-giving, especially of something a little special like a bouquet, is generally a relatively deliberate and premeditated action. Cassie isn't thinking things through here, but she's not completely given in to desperation - she's still acting with intention, the part of her brain that's perceptive and even manipulative is still turned on.

The last thing I wanted to touch on - the bouquet simile ties into the main point of Seeing in Color, a critique of imperialism and ableism that is important to Aftran's character and to the Daemorphing story of Yeerks. Poetry writes Yeerk characters as frequently disparaging their own bodies and capabilities with words like "blind", talking like they've been unfairly denied the sensorium of other beings and they're owed the experience (via slavery). But it rapidly becomes obvious in Aftran's story, and in the stories of other sympathetic Yeerks, that sight (and hearing, and smelling, and so on) isn't what Yeerks are really lacking. They're desperate for connection and mutual understanding. They're desperate to enjoy beauty and meaning. Human sight isn't better than Yeerk sonar, but a sighted human on Earth can look at the beloved flora and fauna of their homeworld or the face of a loved one, and a Yeerk on Earth that's not in a host brain can only direct their sonar towards a miserable artificial sludge pit full of fascist narcs.

Aftran comparing Cassie's feelings to a bouquet ties in to this narrative thread. Bouquets are a great pleasure to see, smell, and touch. Cassie's feelings freely given (shocking enough that Aftran takes note of it - "didn't even try to hide" - even after Cassie deliberately let Aftran into her brain) are as precious as anything Aftran could experience through Cassie's senses.

#i suspect some or all of this was intended by poetry #but even if i'm seeing something that wasn't intentional (or even that contradicts what poetry was trying to say!) #that reading of the text still means something #i wanted to write something about the ambiguous romantic subtext of a bouquet too #but i couldn't figure out how to say what i wanted to say without explaining isking which. i gotta draw the word count line somewhere. #long post #daemorphing

oh oneshots 1000%. well i mean like. i Enjoy multichaps conceptually but i have literally never finished one. sesdinikhil love languages doesnt count bc sav @grasslandgirl and i wrote that all in one sitting and then divided it into chapters later kdfgkgdfgk but yeah like i have so many ideas for longer wips i just have never gotten into a space where i could write them

PUBLISHED WORK: the long way to a small angry planet by becky chambers is a masterclass of worldbuilding and i want everyone on earth to read it. similarly i think dimension 20's the unsleeping city is the best urban fantasy world ever created and i think about it every time i write urban fantasy! alberto rios is my favorite poet and inspires me Daily like the smallest muscle in the human body is such a wonderful book specifically some extensions on the sovereignty of science which makes me cry so much god i wish i had his skill with language. and the adventure zone remains my favorite story of all time! douglas adams, terry pratchett, honorary rick riordan mention for making me want to write in the first place.

FICS: in terms of like general lifetime inspiration god i would give my kidney to write like these people: tell me about the big bang by nina varela, domesticverse by @gyzym which is utterly lifechanging and permanently affected how i think about love and romance, patron saint of lost causes by @themetaphorgirl because the way it weaves together so many complex beautiful stories is beyond inspiring, if you could let me inside your heart by @featherquillpen because it remains the most compelling group character study ive ever read in my whole life, i hate to look into those eyes and see an ounce of pain by @precalamity bc if i ever write a reclist without this shoot me im a pod person.
