#ffxv: the cosmogony
Text
Currently thinking about the Cosmogony.
It had to exist in some form, back during the time of Somnus and Ardyn and Aera - the Astrals, even if Ifrit had fallen from grace and got his ass kicked because of it, had been worshipped.
Obviously, since Aera was the first Oracle, that wouldn’t be part of it. Neither would the ring or the Crystal, or at least - it wouldn’t feature heavily, not yet.
You can’t tell me that after Aera’s murder and Ardyn’s murder, resurrections (several times over), followed by his imprisonment on Angelgard, people didn’t write of the Healer King who was declared Accursed by the Astrals.
You can’t tell me that people didn’t write of his great deeds, and how he succumbed to the cost of saving as many as he could. You could tell me how those manuscripts were burned, of if Somnus felt the slightest bit of guilt in what he’d done, simply censored - altered, to paint a favorable light on him.
You can’t tell me that that version of the Cosmogony wasn’t kept by his bloodline, even if it was quickly kept out of circulation elsewhere - or hidden and forgotten as generations passed, and the public were fed sanitized versions of the Astral War, The Prophecy, etc, etc.
Not to mention if things were regularly changed and censored according to who was on the Lucian throne, and then later - after Tenebrae and Niflheim and Accordo formed, the difference languages.
Did priestesses and priests exist in the name of each astral? Was it a law that only those dedicated to worship could read the cosmogony in the original texts, did it later have to be translated into the common dialect?
So much changed and lost, and forgotten -
Different versions kept by the royal families, by the people. Tales of previous covenants and revelations forged with the Astrals, tales of how they were honored and dishonored, not to mention the origins of the Starscourge (whether it was the meteor or Ifrit, of simply not mentioned at all), details of the prophecy, the origin of the ring and the Crystal and early Lucis - So much to work with, there.

I don't remember if I already asked this but please tell us about Mors' research into the Cosmogeny and the Prophecy, and what he managed to find out about Ardyn.
Ah, no, this hasn't been asked before. And this answer is not as comprehensive as I would have liked, but I've been sitting on it for long enough.
Soooooo
This little project of Mors's started when he found a Cosmogoy written in old High Lucian and it was Different. Translations didn't add up, words had changed meaning.
Mors was no linguist, so it took him quite a while, but he figured some things out. (And it was all because he knew 'morcente' could mean 'gentle', but it was the gentleness of death.)
(Shiva, Hienta, morcente nivi
Shiva, the Glacian, gentle as snow
Shiva, the Glacian, her snow a gentle death)
So what else was different?
This caused a landslide of discovery for Mors. (He hates The Pious for his religious reforms. So much was lost, but the royal archives are large and some things survived despite the efforts of others.)
From burnt and teared out scraps of parchment hidden in distant crevices he found passages of the Cosmogony that detail a story he has never heard.
[...] Bahamut, born out of bloos and sacrifice, cast his eye upon [...] brought light and healing, and plunged the [...] betraying his very purpose.
Those fragments also tell of a man. A Healer. Chosen by the Gods themselves. But context clues tell Mors, that this passage doesn't mean Somnus nor the Astrals. So who...?

Hello! Thanks for reading. This is part of a collection of head-canon postings I wanted to make regarding my current fanfic’s universe and lore. The fanfic takes place in an altered omen!verse, along with bits and bobs from the alternate ending of Episode Ignis, as well as when FFXV was still Verses XIII. I’ve always been super fascinated by the Omen trailer, and what would have to occur for said trailer to end up happening. Also, I deserve to be self-indulgent. This is a VERY personal, non-factual imagining of my own headworld regarding FFXV and is really not meant to be taken as a legit theory. Please don’t come for me I’m just a nerd.
——
The origins of the Six, as gods of the Cosmogony are murky at best given the lore we’re exposed to within the game, only giving us bits and pieces through Noctis’ eyes. However, a theory I’ve always liked and enjoyed is the idea that the Six are not innate protectors of only Eos, but have traveled to and fro from various worlds and planets, where they deem themselves needed, or perhaps out of necessity.
It’s been stated I believe, by a few producers and directors, that FFXV, FFX, and FFVII all take place within the same universe. (FFXIII is probably in here too, but I’m not done playing the series lol)  It’s never really been truly elaborated too much about what this means, or in what way. A popular speculation is that all of these games are within the same universe but, different planets. We see, in the only opportunity we really have in the ruined Insomnia that both Spira, and Shinra are mentioned. It could of course, be written off that these are just winks for final fantasy fans, and implications, I however like the idea that FFX, and FFVII are different instances of the same planet, different time periods.
I present to you this idea FFVII’s Midgar, is in fact XV’s ancient city of Solheim.
I don’t particularly have any hard evidence for this, mind you, just a collection of loose brain worms that have been clunking around in my mind since XV’s release.
For my fanfic, the first human, upon whom Ifrit bestowed his gift of fire to, was a longstanding predecessor of Rufus Shinra, and that it is remnants of Shinra’s technology, that form the civilization of Solheim.
And thus, this introduces us to the real meat of our head-canon/theory, where the six come into play. We see the Six deities, Ifrit, Shiva, Leviathan, Bahamut, Ramuh, and Titan appear as materia summons in Final Fantasy VII initially. The timeline for FFXV calls the period of Solheim, the Cosmogony, the Age of Myth, so let’s start there.
Tumblr media
THE AGE OF MYTH
I’ve always been a big fan of the idea that the scourge was something infecting the planet, perhaps due to the gods themselves. A lot of people posit that the gods traveled from world to world, and while I like this idea, I imagine gods spend quite a long time on their particular world, and that civilizations don’t particularly seem all that long to them. Shiva and Bahamut in the 2nd FFXV Comic Anthology compare humans to flowers, and state that they’ll only grow if cultivated correctly like particularly grouchy botanists.
Tumblr media
I believe the Six and their messengers and minor deities arrived in a similar fashion to Jenova (I have another head-canon post planned bearing the similarities between the Goddess Eos from Verses, and Jenova and think that they MAY be one and the same)
Tumblr media
they both got lil weird wings. lol The gods are quite eldritch and almost unfathomable in their states in XV, which is one of the things I really like about the series, and I like the idea that the parts of them we see, are in fact their true forms. The summons in VII are more minor forms of the Six that we know and love, perhaps like the way grecian gods interacted with the world around them in their own myths.
It’s loosely possible, that this was the the beginning of the starscourge, and that even directly interacting with minor forms of the Six could transmit the parasite known  as Plasmodium that causes the scourge. We’re shown in XV that even interacting with the gods for long periods of time had detrimental effects on Luna’s health, and that was her whole bloodline’s purpose. Who’s to say ancient Midgar/Solheim stood a chance.
However, as Shinra became more more corrupted, and post advent children the more these magical crystals or Materia were used for humankind’s own ends. Ifrit believed this to be a betrayal of mankind, and was a denial of the sacred bond between humans and their deities, thus igniting the war that struck FFVII’s world to ruin, the gods warred over this, and eventually slept to allow themselves a clean slate. Jenova, or Eos, was then imprisoned in what we know as Pitioss.
Afterwards, the gods then slept, awakening next to bestow the ring upon the Lucis Caelum line some centuries later.

Cosmogony: Dawn of a New Age Update
Hello, everyone!
First of all, let us apologize for the months of silence. As you know, we are all living through a difficult situation right now, and it has not been easy to plan anything in advance for some months now. We can only be thankful that this situation happened once all of our packages had been sent and delivered, so no one had to wait for longer than necessary for their Cosmogony book to reach them.
However, we come here today with sad news: because of the pandemic, and the impossibility of sending out packages safely for all parties involved, we are forced to postpone left-over sales indefinitely. We have thought long and hard about this, and while we are sad to see some of our books and merch bundles still in a box instead of on their way to their forever homes, we believe this is the best decision we could have taken at this time. We hope you will understand our need to postpone left-over sales until it is safer to work again on our project.
There is other news, though!
Since we don’t want to hold on to the Cosmogony money indefinitely, we have gone ahead and made the donation to our charity of choice, the Global Heritage Fund. We were able to raise $2500 for this group!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH, EVERYONE!!! This wouldn’t have been possible without your overwhelming support of the Cosmogony Project.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Below is a breakdown of the project.
If you run the end amount (2118,24€) through a converter app, you’ll see these a tiny difference between the final amount in this spreadsheet and the final amount donated. That is due to currency exchanges being different from when most of the payments were done! COVID-19 has made currency exchanges fluctuate a lot during the past months, but also, most of our payments were done at the end of 2019, so please keep that in mind!
Tumblr media
We will do our best to find homes for the remaining stock once this situation has calmed down a bit, so feel free to continue following the Cosmogony accounts (twitter and tumblr) for any updates that we might have for anyone interested.
Stay safe and stay healthy!! Thank you again for all your support during the course of this project. <3
 See you!

Cosmogony Preview
[July 13th, M.E. 773
Begin transcription:
Annals of Lucis Part Seventeen as recorded by Councilman Ignis Stupeo Scientia]
Contrary to what is likely to become popular belief, Noctis Lucis Caelum CXIV was not a natural-born warrior, but rather a reluctant leader who never had an opportunity to reach his full potential. Even as of this recording, tales of King Noctis’ kindness are spreading throughout Lucis, hand-in-hand with stories of his grand defeat of the Starscourge and The Immortal Accursed.
What these tales do not address--nor perhaps should they, when the people of Lucis require stability and heroic figures now more than ever--is that His Majesty struggled for quite some time to accept the burden the gods placed on his shoulders.
A little teaser for my submission to @cosmogonyzine, which is now open for pre-orders! Every part of this zine is gorgeous and fantastic, and if you like FFXV, I highly recommend grabbing a copy!

A snippet of my fic for @cosmogonyzine 's Starscourge era. I was drawn to this project because of the opportunity to explore unseen parts of the history of Eos and its people.
Preorders are open until Sept 23 at https://cosmogonyzine.bigcartel.com
He moved with practiced caution, knowing that his quarry may flee at the slightest disturbance.
And what quarry it was, antlers each the length of a man’s arm span, hide of white with only the faintest grey markings. He had journeyed many days to find the beast, since he had first heard the tale spreading among the hunters, he had known that the prize must be his. He wore a cloak of grey Coeurl fur, taken from a previous conquest, pulled close against the morning chill. Spear grasped in a calloused hand, he wore a machete at his hip and a second, shorter knife next to it.
Above all, he carried an unshakable faith, not merely in the Gods above, nor in his own skill, but in the balance of the world and his place within it. There was magic in the land. The spirits would guide him, he need only listen.

About Somnus Lucis Caelum
Spoilers ahead about the Royal Edition, obviously!
So now, we know: the founder King was Somnus Lucis Caelum, Ardyn’s little brother.
Until now, the only informations we had on him was what Ardyn said about Somnus: that he was jealous and stole the throne from him. But was it really the case?
Tumblr media
His description says that he was a fair and brave man, and when you encounter him in the Citadel nothing invalidates this, on the contrary.
After the fight when Somnus becomes himself again, he asks Noctis to bring back the Light and to «free [my brother] Ardyn from his curse».
His voice, his words, he really appears as a kind-hearted man who shows some compassion for his infortunate older brother, not really a jealous man.
 .
So, where does this jealous thing comes from?
 .
Like I said, the only things we knew about Somnus was what Ardyn said about him. And Ardyn is super subjective. From his point of view, his brother took everything away from him: his throne first, but also his life since Somnus didn’t prevent Ardyn’s imprisonment, leading him to centuries of suffering into darkness.
After years and years all alone in the dark, Ardyn can have developed unjustified hate for his brother leading him to believe he was just jealous of his status, or maybe something at the time made Ardyn think his brother betrayed him even if it was not the case.
For now, we can’t know precisely what happened between those two, but I think Somnus was not as bad as Ardyn says/believes.
 .
And then I remembered the cover of the Cosmogony book.
Tumblr media
As we can guess, the crowned man receiving the Crystal is Somnus. But look at the scenery: Somnus doesn’t seem really happy. He even seems a little surprised. Look how Bahamut’s hand is holding Somnus’ one. He seems to push his hand to ‘’force’’ him to accept the Crystal. It’s as if Somnus hesitated to take it (maybe afraid after what happened to Ardyn).
So it’s possible that Ardyn was in fact supposed to be the King but was rejected by the Crystal, leading the Gods and the people to pick the second one in the line of the Lucis Caelum, Somnus, who originally asked for nothing.
It’s highly probable because if you read what happened to Queen Crepera Lucis Caelum, it’s exactly the same story: she was not supposed to rule but his father and older brother died precipitously, forcing her to ascend the throne.
So I believe Somnus Lucis Caelum was a good guy, powerless to stop what happened to his brother and obliged to ascend the throne in his place.
Futhermore, I don’t see Square Enix making Noctis’ ancestor a bad person, it would be strange ^^ (but cool in some way… but strange X3 )

Titan, the Archaean, steadfast as stone.
Ramuh, the Fulgurian, sharp as lightning.
Shiva, the Glacian, gentle as snow.
Leviathan, the Hydraean, relentless as tides.
Bahamut, the Draconian, unbending as iron.
Ifrit, the Infernian, fickle as fire.
Since time immemorial, they have watched over Eos.

Is Ardyn really in the Cosmogony book?
A popular theory among FFXV fans is that the illustration we briefly see in a cutscene during Chapter 5 depicts Ardyn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While I agree that this man, who seems to have some sort of magical powers and who doesn't wear a crown does look like Ardyn, I have a major issue regarding this theory.
Here is my question: If Ardyn's brother and his followers did everything they could to demonize Ardyn and to erase him from history, why would he still appear and be depicted as a saint in a book that can be found basically everywhere around Eos?
And if he is in the book, how come nobody seems to know the story of this man, this healer of the people, who should have become the first king of Lucis but was rejected by the Crystal (and everyone else)?
Maybe I'm just overthinking this and this man is indeed Ardyn, but it doesn't seem logical to me. I'd say this man is another Lucian king, maybe Ardyn's brother, but not Ardyn.
