wooo hijinxx first single! debut into the industry with fire and passion, this is what we like to see!

the public reception to the single being mostly in english was genuine surprise. it’s not unheard of having english lyrics in k-pop songs, but the entire song? as a debut single? for a new group trying to find their own footing? yeah korean netizens were not having it at all. on a forum asking what people thought about the song, the top liked negative comment read: they should all move to america since they want to sing songs with no korean lyrics. they shouldn’t even call themselves a ‘korean pop’ group.

many were quick to come to the girls’ defenses though, saying that the song was meant to reach a wider audience since the survival show didn’t do as well as hoped. ratings for the show had tanked following the accusations of rigging and favoritism, so it wasn’t a long shot for the group to debut with such a song to appeal to a wider audience.

now on to the girls! yuina became a quick fan favorite with her expressions and stage presence, surprising viewers with her strong dance skills. it was then revealed that she spent many hours practicing the choreography over and over, sometimes well into the morning, even falling asleep in the practice rooms out of sheer exhaustion. hearing this, coupled with some tidbits of her life that she had revealed on the survival show, warmed her up to the public very quickly. her short rap in the song would also gain a bit of praise, especially for her lack of vocal wavering despite giving one hundred percent during performance.

despite this, kq would receive a lot of criticism for debuting the girls with ‘simple choreo’, the general consensus being that ( save for yuina who was really busting her ass on stage every time ) the other three girls would ‘walk instead of dance’ into each position.

micha received a ton of attention, some good, most of it bad. the main sore spot was that, as the main vocalist, she was given the most lines, but netizens would go on to complain that the company was favoring her through an unfair line distribution. hate comments would be left underneath the videos uploaded for the performances. she’s lucky she’s pretty, one commenter would write, otherwise i would really hate to hear the sound of her voice. when she dances she looks like she’s being electrocuted and it’s not like she tries to be likable.

eunji would go semi-viral for blankly staring at the screen during group introductions, the nerves getting to her so bad she would default to a semi panicked look. screenshots of the moments would go viral to be used as a reaction meme despite most not knowing where the pictures originated from.

mascara would be promoted for a month and a half, long enough for public performances / more busking, few idol interactions, and dance challenges—especially with their senior group, ateez. the ‘mascara challenge’ with yuina, wooyoung, and san would especially go viral due to atinys flooding the comments with love and poking fun at the notable height difference between san and yuina.

mascara did not gain any wins, but it would go on to chart and peak at number 87 on the billboard hot 100, marking their first entry on to a chart.

soon after the music video for mascara dropped, hijinxx would release a four episode behind the scenes series of filming, practices, and more for each member titled to their respective suit. ( ex : micha’s episode would be titled ‘HIJINXX - ‘MASCARA’ BTS : DIAMOND SUIT’ )

even though there wasn’t much to say about ahyeon’s performance, she would gain more traction for her persona off stage. atinys and aces would bond over hongjoong and ahyeon’s friendship, the bits and pieces of the two featured in her mascara bts episode showcasing just how close they were. considering she’s the one who actively pursued their friendship, their moments were received fondly as the two truly seemed comfortable together. the recording process especially showcased this, featuring a now infamous moment of the two poking fun at each other in the studio. one atiny would post on twitter, ‘new drinking game : take a shot each time ahyeon says ‘joong-ah!’ every time he acts like a little shit LMAOOO 😭 i love them together <3’, the tweet amassing enough attention for even the ateez members themselves to pick up on the teasing.

Before he could respond, her mother returned with a man Karina didn't recognize at first. Then it hit her, that is her childhood friend.

“Karina, honey, you remember Ethan,” her mother smiled, introducing Ethan as he stepped forward, all charm and green eyes.

Suppressing her smile, Karina shook his hand, noticing the size of his hands with a silent observation. “Ethan Lee, right?”

“Right,” he confirmed, maintaining his hold on her hand. She watched as his tongue swiped across his lips, unable to look away.

Finally releasing her hand, Ethan cleared his throat and turned his attention to her father. “I was just coming over to ask if you wouldn’t mind me doing the pool tomorrow, rather than next week,” he asked respectfully. As Karina’s mother handed him a drink, he thanked her before returning his gaze to her father.

“Of course. Is everything okay?” her father inquired, still engrossed in his meal as Karina resumed her seat, observing the exchange.

“Yes, sir. Just made some plans for Sammy’s birthday; he’s back in town for the next few months,” Ethan explained proudly, giving her a subtle wink as he caught her watching him.

“Yes, all fine with me, but we won’t be here so you’ll be dealing with Karina here,” her dad remarked with a roll of his eyes. Karina playfully slapped his arm when he chuckled, unable to suppress the nostalgic smile that crept onto her lips. His deep chuckle reminded her of her childhood.

“I’m sure I can handle her,” Ethan grinned directly at her, while her mother distracted her father.

“We’ll see, Lee,” Karina smirked, swiftly changing the subject to avoid losing her composure.

”So, how is Sam anyway?” Karina inquired, turning in her seat to look up at him where he stood.

“He’s good, not so little anymore. Got a fiance and he’s a lawyer,” Ethan informed her proudly as she stood by the kitchen counter, refilling her drink.

“Always thought the two of you would end up together,” Ethan revealed, completely confusing her.

Hearing her mother laugh, Karina's eyes widened. “Oh no, this one here had a thing for his b-” her mother stopped abruptly, noticing Karina's flushed face and the way she was looking at her.

Before her mother could say anything else that Karina would regret ever telling her, she led Ethan to the front door, he laughed, willingly following her. That is until they reached the door frame; he stopped, turning to look down at her.

“So best friend, or big brother?” he smirked, his green eyes practically sparkling. Karina thought to herself, cocky son of a bitch.

“See you tomorrow, pool boy.”

“Are you gonna come keep me company, while I do a favor for your parents?” he asked cheekily, throwing an arm above his head to lean against the door frame.

“I might,” Karina shrugged off her answer, wishing that he didn’t still have this insane effect on her after all of these years, but she tried not to let him get to her.

“Wait, you mean that’s not your only job?” Karina asked mockingly. Ethan smirked when she stepped closer, shaking his head at her.

“Nope,” he winked, popping the 'p'.

“My job, my real job, involves me getting a lot dirtier,” he revealed, licking his lips when he noticed her staring. She swallowed the lump in her throat, feeling the heat of his chest against hers.

“I’m a mechanic, sweetheart,” he added at her confused expression, and okay god, it got worse.

“R-Right, yeah. Makes sense,” she stuttered, and there were the nerves she remembered so well.

“So, I’ll see you tomorrow then, sugar.”

“Yeah, sure,” Karina replied quietly, watching him walk away. He headed over to the car parked in the drive, the one that used to be his dad's.

Closing the door, Karina turned to find her mother behind her, quickly noticing just how sheepish she looked.

“I’m so sorry, baby! I completely forgot!” her mother rushed to explain, and all Karina could do was laugh it off.

“Stop it! I swear, it’s all fine! A little embarrassing admittedly, but still, it’s okay,” she assured her, pulling her into a hug. Her mother quickly relaxed against her, wrapping her in her arms.

She pulled back with a watery smile.

“I’m so glad you’re back, baby, we really missed you,” smiling, she cupped Karina's cheeks, like she was trying to memorize her face.

“I know, mom, let’s go eat.”

The night passed quickly, talk of the old days and how Karina was considering coming back home. Before she knew it, she was waving them away, watching the taxi disappear.

She looked at the time, swearing under her breath. Her dad had told her Ethan would be over in the next hour, and she really wanted a bath before he got here.

Taking a longer bath than she meant to, Karina left herself only ten minutes to slip into her new red bikini and shorts.

It was so hot outside, and she was determined to drive him crazy. He wanted to be all sexy; two could play at that game. She’d put up with it enough when she was younger, having a somewhat filthy crush on her best friend’s big brother was definitely not ideal.

She just about heard the knock at the door, which was quickly followed by the unmistakable noise of the doorbell. Heading downstairs after a quick glance in the mirror, taking a deep breath, she opened the door.

“Mornin’ Karina,” he winked, giving her an appreciative once over before walking past her into the house.

Closing the door behind him, Karina frowned.

“Really, Ethan, jeans? You are cleaning the pool, right? So why not wear shorts?” she questioned as she followed him into the back garden.

“I don’t do shorts, sweetheart. Why? Do you wanna see some more skin or somethin’?” he asked suggestively, unlocking the shed to get the things he needed. She didn’t see his face, but she was sure he was smirking to himself.

She scoffed at him, moving aside as he began pulling things out of the shed.

“No. I just wondered, it’s so damn hot today. Seems kinda odd weather for that,” she stated, nodding at his attire, brushing it off as easily as she could.

“Well, something is definitely hot” he grins, eyeing her shamelessly as he pulls off his shirt, hanging it on the back of the chair. “There, better?” he asks knowingly, a smug look on his face when Karina choke back a moan, almost swallowing her own tongue.

He doesn’t wait for an answer as he locks the shed door, leaving her to stare at his back.

The sunlight bounces off his tanned skin as he walks over to the pool with the equipment, and Karina realise that she never seen someone with so many muscles in their back. She can just imagine dragging your nails down it as he–

Slightly bewildered, Karina follow him after a moment longer of staring, taking her seat on the sun lounger by the pool. but anyway.

hijinxx is a four member girl group under kq entertainment, formed through one of the worst survival shows to grace my screen—i mean. formed through a collaboration with mnet. they debuted on june 14th, 2021 with the digital single ‘mascara’.

the meaning behind the group name comes directly from the work ‘hijinks’, which means to have pure, unsupervised fun without a care for rigid rules and beliefs. stylized with two xs, the word takes on a new form with the word ‘jinx’, which is said when two people say the same word twice. towards the concept, it conveys meeting a second self or a doppelgänger—which leads up right to the group’s concept.

the lore for the group is a bit… interesting, to say the least, so i’ll give you a brief rundown and save the theories for the thinkers. being a student full time means i only have so many braincells to dedicate to pondering.

there are two worlds, the real world and the xverse. the real world contains our four main girls while the xverse contains their doppelgängers, which is where the four aces in the suits come in. each member represents a suit and what that suit stands for. after discovering a crack in their reality, the main girls are transported to the xverse to help their doppelgängers end the unrest on their side so that it doesn’t spill into the real world. that’s basically it! there’s your sparksnotes version.

each song is ‘supposed’ to tie into the lore, but i’m pretty sure at least half are not lore related at all. 😭 sometimes girls just wanna make pretty songs and that’s okay! if you ask me…. i wish they didn’t debut with lore and just kept the doppelgänger concept of meeting a second self, but that’s just me. now on to the fandom.

hijinxx fans are called ACES, members of the elite force in the xverse. the name draws its inspiration from the survival show, ‘house of cards’, which shares a name with the most important building in the x universe. nestled in the capital city kharta, ACES are a representative of the residents that live in that universe. with there being four suits in a deck of cards, there are naturally four nations in kharta dedicated to each one: clubs, hearts, diamonds, and spades, to which each doppelgänger is the ‘protector’ of. kinda like the four nations in the avatar universe.

theres more information about the lore, especially about why the doppelgängers need the girls’ help to fix the crack in the universe, who is even trying to sneak into the real world and why, but again, i’m not really here to talk about lore! let’s talk about the girls now.

hijinxx consists of members PARK AHYEON, HEO MICHA, ITO YUINA, and AN EUNJI. these were the four chosen by the end of the survival show, receiving the highest of votes with micha in first place, yuina in second, ahyeon in third, and eunji in fourth.

born in 1998 on august eighth, making her a leo, ahyeon is the oldest of the group. often hailed as both the group’s mom and the glue of the group, the girls have no shame saying she’s the reason why hijinxx has prospered this much. and i’m inclined to agree! she is the pen and paper behind the group’s lyrics and composition as both a producer and lyricist. ahyeon has not shied away from talking about her passion for music, one of the main reasons being her buying her first soundboard with her own money at 13 years old.

while she’s a perfect fit in hijinxx, ahyeon’s journey with the music industry did not being with kq. in 2014, she, along with one of her sisters ( she’s the oldest of three girls ! ) and a couple of her friends would form the girl group XTRA, releasing mainly vocal and dance covers of their favorite songs. this is truly where her passion for music would blossom, remixing songs and eventually making her own for the group to dance to. XTRA would disband in late 2017 on good terms, which would then lead ahyeon to audition at kq in 2018.

ahyeon is also technically the group’s main dancer, as that was what she was marketed as during her time on house of cards, but to this day hjx doesn’t really have set positions other than leader, main vocals, and main rapper. but ahyeon dances really well so 🤷‍♀️ she’s main dancer to me !

when she’s off idol duty, she loves doting on the other three members, proudly taking on the mantle of group mom regardless of her lack of a leader title. she’s very mom coded. comes with the oldest sibling title. her hobbies outside of music consist of leisure gaming ( ex : she’s very dedicated to animal crossing and animal crossing pocket camp ), reading, and chess.

next in line, we have micha ! born april twenty-fourth, 2000, making her a taurus. lord have mercy. when beyoncé was talking about face cards never declining, micha was in the studio. i said what i said. heo micha release the hold you have on me…

girlie had a whole mysterious vibe for a solid two years ( hoc included ) and we barely had info on her for the longest. she’s stupid private. i respect it, honestly. internet users are scary. in this industry you breathe wrong and someone shows up at your house. crazy ass world. but here’s what we do know:

she’s an only child ( not that that wasn’t obvious ngl 💀 ) to a film director and a regular non celebrity. it was speculated that she won first place due to her status, but y’all just hate to see mimi be better than your faves 🤷‍♀️ not her fault she can hold a high note while busting ass on stage. thats talent… tell your fave to step up !! she used to do modeling for small brands as a child and won singing competitions throughout school. we love to see it.

micha is also the main vocalist and hijinxx’s leader, the latter of which came with her first place ranking on hoc. a lot of people mistake ahyeon for the leader, which isn’t true ! micha has opened up about how the position makes her feel, and according to her, the two of them are on good terms about the placement. she’s a great leader—and this is not a jab at ahyeon at all—because she’s clear, cut and concise. the other hjx members have said that her high expectations are the reason why their presence on stage has grown exponentially. their youngest member especially has shown significant improvement since her hoc days under mimi’s hawk eyes, but we’ll get to her soon.

when she’s not running hjx like the military, micha is noted to enjoy horror movies, spicy foods, and designing her own clothes in the hopes of having her own line one day. idk about y’all, but i would love micha merch. her style is impeccable. chef’s mf kiss.

due to all the hype brought on by “first bighit girl group in five years” and by kaleina and aeri’s appearance on produce, krush’s debut made waves

the music video for “classy” received over FIFTEEN MILLION views in its first 24 hours, and it debuted at number one on EVERY major music chart, beating out “dna” of all songs !

the girls even saw international success, with “classy” debuting at number four on both billboard’s bubbling under and world digital songs charts (before shooting up to number ONE !), and with the album debuting at number TEN on the billboard 200

(yes, they made top ten !)

get this, though. “classy” later made it to number EIGHTY EIGHT on the billboard hot 100, making krush the second k-pop girl group to make it onto the chart !
