Today we ask: what the fuck is Exy?
Exy is a fictional sport from the All For the Game series by Nora Sakavic described as the bastard lovechild of ice hockey and lacrosse. It is infamously uncleared described in the books despite games sometimes taking up whole chapters.
Today I address the 5 most pressing rules because I skipped therapy this week and need an outlet.
Q. 1) What does an Exy court look like?
Exy is played on something the size and layout of a soccer pitch but with a hard court floor like basketball and plexiglass walls and ceiling. This is shorter but wider than an American football field but much larger than an ice hockey rink.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is unfortunately demented because there are only 6 players per team on the court at any given moment whereas soccer has 11. For scale this is how much space the 22 players on a soccer field have.
Tumblr media
Now imagine that's 12 people. You see the problem.
Also the ball in sports like lacrosse or hurling moves very, very fast and can travel long playing fields. Hurling, an Irish traditional sport and IRL sport where the ball moves fastest, has 15 players per side on a field only 10m longer than a soccer pitch.
This in mind as we move onto those walls.
Tumblr media
The nonshatter plexiglass walls and ceiling would be for safety given how fast that ball would be moving. Ice hockey has walls but no ceiling b/c pucks don't get into the air or bounce as much as balls (though it has happened and yes people have been injured)
Tumblr media
However the concept of walls and a ceiling in a sport where a ball would move as fast as an exy ball would move is HILARIOUS.
Those cosest equivalents, lacrosse and hurling, that I mentioned are both outdoors with nothing to rebound off. This would be chaos murder pinball!
Q. 2 Is exy played indoors or outdoors?
This is a controversial one with fans of these books because having read the series several times I can only offer you my best educated guess.
As stated above, the court itself is a self-contained murder pinball box so stadiums could be open to the sky like football but descriptions of stadiums like Evermore sound as if they are closed roofed like hockey or basketball. Smaller, high school level etc, might need to be multipurpose/adaptable and therefore outdoors (as seen in book 1 in Millport)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Q.3 What are the actual rules of play?
Again, exy as written was "rules light" to put it mildly.
We can gather its got similar contact rules to ice hockey with the same contempt for people fouling the goalie or players not "in play". There are allowances for momentum and like ice hockey or roller derby there are multiple refs watching the game at all times because it moves so quickly.
These refs are outside the enclosed court area unlike hockey, more like roller derby that way, and we can assume from other multiple ref sports that there is a head ref for final decisions.
No offside though rule so its got that going for it (I'm still gay even after that joke)
Play has to stop to open the court doors because of the murder pinball aspect of the balls motion around the court. Refs can call a halt as they see fit. A player can call a halt to play if they are injured and can not continue the half. Play halts after any goal. Teams can use any halt to make substitutions but can only call a halt for the purpose of substitution once per half.
There are six positions striker, backliner (defensive line), goalkeeper, and dealers (offensive and defensive).
Q.4 What the fuck are dealers?
Dealers. Yeah. No one really knows so I apply best sports logic.
This brings us back to exy having only 6 players on a soccer-sized pitch. Soccer has mid-fielders to bridge the gap between forwards and defenders but the ball would be much slower than exy. Hurling (fastest irl ball sport) has 15 players.
Despite having more players, hurling has the positions half-back or half-forward, which are halfway between midfield and either full-forward (striker) or full-back (defender). This is the only logical model for what the difference between an offensive and defensive dealer is.
Do with that what you will.
Q.5 What is the protective gear like?
The armor is often left out of fanart i think because people it would be as bulky as football or ice hockey armor.
They'd ha e to use something like lacrosse armor for maneuverability. It would be made out of thick padded mesh. Helmets with face guards are an obvious must have.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In lacrosse only goalies wear hard plastic throatguards but since its murder pinball, everyone gets one
That's all I've got folks. I'm doing outing myself as a Sports Gay™️ now.

what do you think each of the counselors' favorite season is? :)
Aaaahhh this is such a good question!!
Laura - I see Laura as a spring girly. She grew up obsessed with animals, and this is when most all the new baby birds, rabbits, etc. appeared. Her favourite flowers are spring flowers as well, like tulips and lilacs.
Max - He loves fall! It's not too hot, not too cold, I can see him loving pumpkin spice lattes and Halloween. Max loves to go for walks and look at the leaves changing colour with Laura.
Ryan - I see Ryan also enjoying fall. He has 10 variations of the same 1 outfit, which works much better in the fall than any other time of year. His favourite podcast puts out extra content closer to Halloween, and he loves dressing up with his sister and taking her trick-or-treating. Fall also brings back routine with school, which is good for our boy.
Dylan - I can see him really appreciating winter, which is a controversial choice. He would nerd out over snowflakes when he was little, and he still loves going to see Christmas lights with his mom. Dylan prefers to be cold so he can bury himself in 10 blankets and Ryan's sweaters, which is much easier in winter.
Emma - Summer and Emma go hand in hand. She loves going to the beach, swimming, and late nights by the fire. Sure, summer gives her tons of content to film, but she truly enjoys the heat and the long days. I can see her have seasonal affective disorder so she dreads fall and winter.
Jacob - Jacob also loves summer. He plays outdoor soccer, football, and field lacrosse during the summer months, and he loves going to the outdoor music festivals held every year where he lives. Jacob isn't the most studious when we meet him, so I think he also appreciates not having to do school work during the summer.
Abi - Spring is a time of change, new beginnings, and new growth, which I think would be very inspiring to Abi. She would spend a bit of time each day photographing the new flowers in bloom for her to sketch later. She also loves going to the local park to watch all the new ducklings grow up.
Nick - I think Nick also loves spring and summer. He surfs and plays soccer, which is easier to do when it's warmer. He's indecisive though, so he can't pick a true favourite between the two.
Kaitlyn - Kaitlyn will say she doesn't have a favourite season, but she has a soft spot for winter. Her birthday is in December, she likes watching women's hockey, and she gets to break out her favourite scarf when it heys cold - one a friend knit for her as a birthday present when she was 14.

What sports or clubs would the Ericson kids be in
Always fun to answer asks like this! Let's see...
Clementine: She would definitely be a sports kinda gal so she would play both baseball and soccer. As for a club, she'd be part of Black Student Union.
Louis: He would do a mixture of Music and Theater Club.
Violet: If she joined a sports team it would be basketball and as for a club it would be the Astronomy club.
Marlon: He also plays basketball and drops by the theater club on occasion to hang out with Louis and his other friends. He also volunteers at an animal shelter.
Mitch: He would join the science club, and probably blow up a few things here and there.
Brody: She's part of the swim team and garden club where she is the vice president.
Aasim: He is part of the archery team and book club.
Ruby: She is the president of the garden club and the tea club. Lots of people drop by for hangouts at the tea club.
Sophie: She's on the baseball team and in the art club.
Minnie: She's on the track and field team and music club. She also drops by the theater club and has fun there too but isn't a full-time member.
Omar: A Home-Ec club and he bakes for a lot of fundraisers for other clubs. Also volunteers at the local soup kitchen.
Willy: He dabbles in a lot of different ones but settles on outdoors club and plays soccer.
Tenn: He's on the tennis team and is in the art club.
AJ: When he's old enough he plays football and then he makes his own club, the Disco Brocolli club. It only has about two other members to it but that was enough to make it an official club.
James: He's on the swim team and photography club. Louis convinces him to drop by the theater club from time to time. James enjoys his time there because he can be the dramatic type too when he wants to be.
and to give these few some more spotlight
Gabe: He doesn't really join any sports team. Instead, he grabs his skateboard and goes to the skateboarding park. If he did join any sport it would be baseball and it would be to show off to his crush. As for clubs, he doesn't really officially join any either he just goes from one to the other to chill with friends.
Mari: She joins the baseball team which makes her uncle very happy and she is part of the writing club. She loves writing and finds it relaxing.
Duck: He joins the comics club and also joins the lacrosse team.
Thanks for the ask!

i don’t know if you’ve been asked this before but im curious as to how you think you’d fare in a walking dead-esque apocalypse
omg anon u have no idea how much i’ve thought about this.
logically, i think i’d fair pretty well? i grew up doing a lot of martial arts (taekwondo, karate, judo) where i won a lot of titles and doing a lot of sports (basketball, lacrosse, swimming, relay), so i think physically i might be okay. but i’ve like, fully stopped doing them 😭😭 but it can’t be too hard to fall back into those types of things, right??? i also have a huge interest in the medical field and am pretty adept at making stuff from literally nothing (shout out to my biomed engineering majors out there 😍), so i think i would be kept safer/people would look out for me more because where r u gonna find an md doctor in the apocalypse okay you cant be picky.
the problem is though, i, uh, hate the outdoors and baseline, i have very little will to live 🤌 so i think if there were like zombies and shit actually, i would fully kms 😀😀 like, this probably isn’t what you want to hear, but i’m not really down to survive a lot of stuff. now, if daryl’s somehow added to the equation or carol is or hershel is, maybe i’d reconsider. but for now, this is my answer !! hope it satisfies your curiosity !!

Staff Merit Award: Clifton Murphy
Tumblr media
Recreational Sports’ 40+ acres of outdoor recreation space is ready for play and learning, enhancing our student’s health and well-being, thanks to Clifton Murphy’s leadership. His day starts early at 6 a.m. as he and his team prepare the outdoor space for use by our 52,000 students. Murphy’s dedication to providing excellent facilities allows students and members to enjoy the highest-quality outdoor recreational spaces without worrying about field conditions. For these efforts, the Division of Student Affairs — the hub of student life and well-being — is recognizing him with a Texas Parents Staff Merit Award.*
“When students extend that gratitude to me and say, 'It looks great out here!' — it makes me feel like my job matters. I feel like I am contributing to the student experience by keeping the space playable and enjoyable. I couldn’t see myself working anywhere else because it is so welcoming here.”
Clifton Murphy Grounds Maintenance Supervisor Recreational Sports
Tumblr media
Murphy at Wright-Whitaker Sports Complex in 2006
Murphy influences the Longhorn life by maintaining the Charles Alan Wright Fields at the Berry M. Whitaker Sports Complex and Caven Lacrosse and Sports Center at Clark Field. His work impacted the nearly 98,000 participants who visited Whitaker during the 2022-2023 academic year. He leads a team of professional field maintenance technicians that mow, water and fertilize the fields.
They also paint new lines to allow for different teams to play, from soccer to rugby to lacrosse, and maintain turf fields and the Wright-Whitaker Sports Complex’s sand volleyball courts. These specialized efforts allow Recreational Sports to host practices and competitions for the 45 sport clubs and nearly 900 intramural teams that use these outdoor facilities.
“Clifton ensures that each of his interactions with students, faculty or staff are cordial, informative and positive. He constantly takes on more responsibility than what is outlined in his job description because of his desire to ensure the participant experience is a lasting one, in the hope that those individuals will come back to Recreational Sports facilities again and again,” noted a nominator.

Congratulations to Murphy who helps make it possible for Recreational Sports to advance the well-being of all Longhorns by providing education through recreation! All UT Austin students can enjoy these transformational outdoor spaces because of his care and maintenance.

The Haudenosaunee National Lacrosse Teams Gain Support from Biden for 2028 Olympics (dated to 19 December 2023, shared on 20 December 2023):
At the White House Tribal Summit this month, President Joe Biden voiced his support for The Haudenosaunee National Lacrosse teams to compete in the upcoming 2028 Olympics under their own flag, in a show of support for tribal sovereignty.
In October, The International Olympic Committee voted to add lacrosse to the 2028 Olympic games in Los Angeles, California (LA28), for the first time in more than a century.
The Haudenosaunee—a confederacy of six nations between the United States and Canada, including Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca, and Tuscarora—invented lacrosse and remain competitive at it on a world stage.
The Haudenosaunee Nationals men’s team ranks third in the world behind the United States and Canada in outdoor (and second indoor), and took home the bronze medal at the men's World Lacrosse Championships in June. The women’s team is ranked eighth globally and won gold at the Pan-American Lacrosse Association tournament in Jamaica in November.
“Their ancestors invented the game,” Biden said to a room full of Tribal delegates and members of Congress in Washington D.C. on Dec. 7. “They perfected it for a millennia. Their circumstances are unique, and they should be granted an exception to field their own team at the Olympics.”
Rex Lyons (Onondaga) is a former player for the then-Iroquois Nationals (the team changed its name in 2022 because Iroquois is a derogatory term the French called the Haudenosaunee) and a sitting board member for the Haudenosaunee Nationals Lacrosse Organization. He was on the inaugural team in 1983. Lyons told Native News Online that the Haudenosaunee are the “best ambassadors” for the sport of lacrosse.
“It's not like we don't belong there,” Lyons said. “And not only that, it’s our game. We are the originators. It’s a medicine game.”
For men and women Haudenosaunee lacrosse players, the ability to compete at the Olympics under their own flag would mean representation, liberation, and honor.
“For me personally, it would be a true honor,” said 31-year-old Mohawk player, Randy Staats. “It’s all the best words you could possibly think of, rolled up into one, to be able to put on that jersey and go side by side with all the other countries in the world. It’s not only representing my family and my people, but other Native people. It gives them hope and change for treaties that they have with their government.”
Casandra “Bean” Minerd  (Onondaga), a 28-year-old member of the Haudenosaunee National women’s team, told Native News Online that competing as a sovereign nation in the Olympics would create an opportunity for global education. As an Indigenous woman, she said she’s used to debunking myths and defending her existence.
“Us going to the Olympics would be an opportunity for education, where we’re not going to be fighting as much to prove who we are…and that we’re not extinct,” Minerd said. “I know that when that time comes, and we're walking out with our flag and wearing our gear with Haudenosaunee across our chest, I'll be sobbing the whole time because it’s just so huge. It’s bigger than myself. We’re giving the opportunity to kids thinking they can work towards becoming an Olympic athlete.”

WARWICK, RI (July 15, 2022) – The following distinguished athletes, coaches, officials and administrators will be inducted into the Rhode Island Interscholastic League High School Athletic Hall of Fame-Class of 2022 on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick. Ticket information will be made available in the coming weeks.
Elizabeth Beisel
Arguably the best female swimmer ever to come out of Rhode Island, Beisel competed in three Olympic Games (2008, 2012 and 2016), winning a silver (400-meter medley) and a bronze (200-meter backstroke) medal at the 2012 Summer Games in London. At the same time, the Saunderstown resident was compiling an amazing high school swimming career at North Kingstown High School, where she won the maximum eight individual RIIL individual titles, setting state high school and URI pool records along the way, while also helping the Skippers capture multiple relay victories. Beisel also starred at the University of Florida and has become a media contributor for NBC and ESPN.
Frank Caparco
A two-time All-State golfer and member of Cranston East’s ice hockey team that won two state titles (1966 & ’67) and a New England championship, Caparco went on to play both sports at the former Rhode Island Junior College and Roger Williams College. He remained connected to hockey by serving as a youth, high school and college hockey official for more than 40 years. A past president of the R.I. Hockey Officials Organization, Caparco refereed numerous championships at every level and officiated more than 140 RIIL playoff games from 1973 to 2015.
Margaret Conaty
Part of the first generation of girls given the opportunity to play interscholastic sports in Rhode Island, Margaret “Bootie” Conaty took full advantage of the opportunity, competing in field hockey, cross country, basketball and outdoor track for Smithfield High School. Named the school’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete in 1972, she led the Sentinels to the first RIIL Girls Basketball State Championship that year, along with back-to-back outdoor state titles. Upon graduating from the University of Rhode Island, where she played field hockey, basketball and lacrosse, Conaty embarked on a successful 41-year career in high school athletic administration in Massachusetts, while also serving on many boards and committees for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association and National Federation of State High School Associations.
Ed Cooley
Named the 2022 National and Big East Conference Coach of the Year in his 16th season as head coach of the Providence College men’s basketball team, Cooley got his start not far from where he now coaches the Friars, honing his skills at Central High School in the late 1980s. A two-time first-team All-State selection, the 6-foot-3 forward guided the Knights to back-to-back RIIL State Championships in 1987 and ’88. Described by then coach Harold Metts as “the spiritual leader of the team,” Cooley earned tournament MVP honors both times, then went on to produce a hall-of-fame career at Stonehill College before joining the college coaching ranks.
Manny DaSilva
A three-sport star at the former Bristol High School from 1987-1991, DaSilva was a three-time first-team All-State baseball player, first-team All-State football player and All-Division basketball player for the Colts. He received a baseball scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he starred for three seasons before being drafted by the Oakland Athletics in 1994. When an injury cut short his professional career, DaSilva went into law enforcement, working as a deputy sheriff in North Carolina and then Rhode Island. He has remained connected to baseball through coaching and is a hitting instructor for youth and college players.
Claudia DeFaria
A member of the Central Falls, CCRI, Rhode Island College, New England Basketball and Little East Halls of Fame, DeFaria has left an indelible mark on every basketball program she has ever played for. Graduating from Central Falls High School in 1990 as the Warriors’ all-time leading scorer and rebounder with 1,350 points and more than 1,000 rebounds, the All-Stater went on to star at CCRI (916 points and 214 assists) from 1990-92 and at RIC (1,048 points) from 1993-95. She has had successful stints coaching at Cranston West, CCRI and now at RIC, where she is an assistant coach when she is not working for Adoption Rhode Island.
Kelli Fay-Wolfe
The 1987 Words Unlimited R.I. Schoolgirl Athlete of the Year, Fay-Wolfe starred in both basketball and track and field at Cumberland High School. A two-time All-Stater, 1987 Converse All-American and 1987 Naismith R.I. Player of the Year, she finished with 1,073 career points and helped lead the Clippers to the title game of the Class A Championship in 1985, ‘86 and ‘87. Fay-Wolfe also became the first girl to win four individual titles at the 1987 outdoor state meet and led Cumberland to the State Championship that year. She went on to have an extremely successful track career at the University of Pennsylvania. A high school and college mathematics teacher, Fay-Wolfe has coached high school girls basketball and track and is a track and field official.
Jameson “Jamie” Gresh
Earning the No. 1 singles spot in his freshman year at Barrington High School, Gresh did not lose a match in his sophomore, junior and senior years, winning three-straight RIIL singles state titles in 1996, ’97 and ‘98. During his high school career, the four-time first-team All-Stater also led the Eagles to three Division I State Championships. He earned the No. 1 singles and doubles spots in his junior and senior years at Penn State University and was an All Big Ten Conference selection both seasons. Gresh played professionally for several years after college and served as an assistant coach at Brown for four seasons before moving to Newport Beach, Calif., where he is now a tennis pro and head coach of Corona del Mar High School’s successful boys and girls tennis teams.
William Haberek
A teacher at his alma mater for 31 years before retiring in 2004, Haberek has coached cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field first at Chariho Middle School and then at the High School for nearly five decades. He has earned multiple Coach of the Year honors, while mentoring many All-State, All-Class and All-Division athletes, as well as the 2012 Indoor 4x1 Mile National Champs. Also a member of the Chariho and Rhode Island Track Coaches Association Halls of Fame, Haberek has guided the Chargers to the 2011 Outdoor State Championship and the 2012 Indoor state title.
Kathy Kelley
When Central Falls High School added interscholastic athletics for girls in 1975 during Kelley’s junior year, she jumped at the chance to play. An All-State, All-League and All-Blackstone Valley selection in both cross country and basketball, she received a basketball scholarship to the University of Bridgeport. After playing one season there, Kelley transferred to R.I. College, where she enjoyed a hall-of-fame career, finished with 764 points in three seasons and earned a Division III All-American nomination. She returned to her alma mater and spent more than three decades serving the Central Falls' youth as a mathematics teacher, athletic director and coach of the Warriors’ cross country, volleyball, track, softball and girls basketball teams.
Thomas Mezzanotte
Following a 30-year career within the Providence School System, where he served as a teacher, assistant principal (Mt. Pleasant H.S.), principal (Bridgham M.S. and Classical H.S.) and Executive Director of Student Support Services, Mezzanotte became the RIIL’s Executive Director in 2004. During his 16 years in that role, he expanded the league’s education-based athletics program, worked with Special Olympics RI to implement a unified high school sports program for students with intellectual disabilities, implemented a mandatory certification requirement for coaches and helped develop the R.I. Concussion Law. A standout football and baseball player at La Salle Academy and then Providence College, Mezzanotte also coached football at Johnston High School and girls volleyball at Central High School during his early years of teaching.
Bethany O’Dell Peloquin
O’Dell-Peloquin starred in basketball and field hockey at Lincoln High School in the early 2000s, earning first-team All-State honors twice in both sports. She led the Lions’ field hockey team to two Division I Championship appearances. A two-time tournament MVP and the 2006 Gatorade Rhode Island Basketball Player of the Year, she finished as Lincoln’s all-time leading scorer (2,431 points) and led the Lions to back-to-back Division II Championships (2005 and 2006). O’Dell-Peloquin then received a full Division I basketball scholarship to Holy Cross, finishing with 1,449 career points and earning multiple All-Patriot League honors.
