ooh can you write the story of how Miguel and Petra met 👀
YOU BET YOUR BUTT I CAN
Miguel didn’t quite know how to proceed.
He got warning of an anomaly on Earth 8136, which was odd — there was no record of any spider person there. But it turns out that was the anomaly. There was supposed to be one, but there was no indication that one existed. And now the city was being torn apart.
So he and Jess swooped in to clean up the mess and figure out where exactly 8136’s spider person was. While Jess was taking out the bad guys and making sure the citizens were safe, Miguel was ready to begin a search.
That’s when he sensed them.
It was weird — the sense was there, but it was faint. He had never quite felt that before. He whipped his head and looked around furiously until his senses led him to... a massive pile of concrete rubble.
Underneath his mask, Miguel raised an eyebrow and began to toss back the chunks of rock. He was about to reach for a particularly big slab when something — no, someone — stopped him.
They were whimpering, and Miguel was confused; the rubble pile was relatively small, and it wasn’t enough to keep a regular sized person trapper underneath.
That’s because it wasn’t a normal sized person.
“What the…”
Miguel’s spider senses were really going off now. He slowly peeled his mask off and lifted one more chunk of concrete off, revealing a dirty, shaking, tiny human being.
Petra whipped their arm up, shielding themselves from the light that suddenly flooded their vision. When their eyes finally adjusted, they recoiled. Shit, they were found! How did that even happen? Who could have known they were here?
Miguel didn’t quite know what was going on, but he knew he had to get this tiny out of here, and fast.
“Hey, little guy,” he started, crouching down even further to get closer to them. “My name is Miguel O’Hara. I’m here to save you.”
Petra’s eyes shook in pure fear, their legs and arms trembling so hard that even if they wanted to get up, they couldn’t.
“It’s not safe, I have to get you out of here. Okay?” Miguel said louder, briefly worrying that maybe they didn’t understand him.
Petra blinked the tears out of their eyes before something came over them — something they had never felt before. It felt like alarm bells were going off in their head, but at the same time, they felt… safe. Like they knew this giant somehow.
Petra whimpered as Miguel reached down and scooped up their shaking body. They grabbed onto one of his fingers for support, which instantly made Miguel’s heart flutter. Holding them in two open palms in front of his face, Miguel’s eyes widened as the realization hit him.
“You’re the spider person,” he practically whispered.
Petra furrowed their brow. “What?”
“MIGUEL!” Jess came zooming in on her motorcycle. “We’re all clear. Anomaly’s been taken… care… of.” She stopped dead in her tracks, staring at the tiny form in Miguel’s hand. Her eyes flashed wide.
“You sense it too?”
All Jess could do was nod. “But… how?”
Miguel shrugged, not quite in the headspace to begin answering that question. Besides, it was hard for him to really say much about the tiny when they were right there in his hand, gawking up at him in a mixture of fear and intrigue.
“What’s… happening?” Both giant spider people were surprised to hear them speak. “Who are you?”
“I… we’re… I’m Spider-Man,” Miguel said after a moment of thought. “That’s Spider-Woman.” He nodded to Jess, who gave a small wave. “And you… you’re one of us.”
Petra stared at Miguel like he had five heads.
“Look, I don’t want to do this, but…” he looked over to Jess, his eyes asking the question they both knew the answer to. “You have to come back with us.”
Petra’s eyes widened. “Wh-what? Go back with you where? You can’t — you can’t take me from my home!”
“It’s not much of a home anymore, is it?” Miguel shot back, extending his arm out dramatically to show Petra the full extent of the damage. The tiny surveyed the landscape, full of rubble and shattered glass and broken buildings. There was so much clutter... and it was perfect for an escape.
Petra held their breath, not daring to make eye contact with this mysterious “Spider-Man”. Seriously. What kind of a name was that? They clenched their fists, closed their eyes and ignored the ringing in their ears.
Petra leapt right off his palm.
The wind whipped through their hair as they locked their arms at their side to gain speed. Miguel was so caught off-guard that he could barely react until Petra just about hit the ground. He instinctively shot out a web, but it narrowly missed them, who juked to the right at the last second. Oh god, what was that? Wait. How did I know that was coming?
Petra was going as fast as they could, but all Miguel and Jess had to do was take a few steps to catch up to them. They were soon standing almost right over them, and Jess, not wanting to scare them more than she already had, put one knee to the ground and started to stretch her hand out.
As her hand closed in on Petra, something kicked in that they couldn’t quite explain. They waited until she was practically latched onto them before leaping into the air, settling their feet on her finger and launching themselves off of it, using her momentum to propel them further ahead.
“Holy crap,” Jess breathed as Petra kept running.
Petra looked back, only to see Miguel stomp past her, an annoyed look plastered on his face. Miguel stepped right over them and positioned himself right in their path, bending down and reaching both of his hands toward them.
Petra’s eyes flashed to a gap between two of his fingers, and they jumped through, landing shakily on the back of his hand. Miguel, not at all prepared for that, instinctively twitched his hand up, sending little Petra flying through the air.
They were falling at breakneck speed, but somehow, they were able to gain control of their limbs, tuck into a ball and land safely on the ground. Petra froze for a moment. How the hell did I just do that?
Suddenly, a force struck their ankle, and they fell to the ground. Miguel had used their moment of shock to hit them with a web. Smirking, he yanked them into the air and deposited them into his palm that quickly morphed into a fist.
“NO! NO! LET ME GO!” they screamed, thrashing their arms and legs at the fleshy masses that surrounded them. They weren’t even sure Miguel could feel it.
“Get us out of here,” they heard him sneer at Jess. In an instant, the sound around them began to warp, like it was being played through a broken record player. A low grumble soon turned into a deafening roar as Miguel stepped through the portal.
It was like Petra was being ripped to shreds, but couldn’t feel a thing. It felt like hours, but in reality, the feeling subsided in the blink of an eye. They stayed in darkness as Miguel marched angrily to his computer platform, ready to get to the bottom of this.
By the time he unfurled his fingers, Petra was on their hands and knees, not used to the wobbling and jolting nature of being carried by a giant. They gasped when their eyes adjusted to the light, looking around frantically but not being able to identify a single thing they saw.
Well, almost nothing. When their gaze met Miguel’s, they scrambled to the back of his palm before slamming into his fingers, stretched far up like trees. This time, Petra had nowhere to run.
“Where are we? You-you can’t keep me here!” Petra tried. Miguel’s face remained stoic. “Come on, you can’t just—just abduct me! I—you took me from—“
“Your home is gone,” Miguel said flatly, like it was a foregone conclusion. Petra’s face twisted into shock at his bluntness. “And even if it wasn’t… you…” he heaved a sigh, pinching the brim of his nose with his free hand. Petra wasn’t sure how, but they could feel how distressed he was. “Look, kid, I don’t really have a good explanation yet, but you have to hear me out, okay?”
Petra nodded. They didn’t have much of a choice.
“Me and Jess,” he jerked his head toward the woman standing with her arms folded in the corner, “and everyone else here, we were all bit by a radioactive spider that gave us our powers. Superior strength, sticking to anything, we shoot webs from our hands, we’re agile… there’s a lot of things we can do.”
Petra was stunned, and Miguel couldn’t help but soften at their expression. This kid… they didn’t know anything.
“And… and you’re saying that I…”
“…am one of those spider-people,” Miguel finished. “You can do extraordinary things… uh… I never got your name, kiddo.”
“Um, Petra. It’s Petra.”
Miguel grumbled. Why did they always have to be a version of the name Peter?
“Well, Petra. My name’s Miguel O’Hara.” He wasn’t sure if his introduction had registered in their brain back on their Earth. “And let me just say, for someone who has no idea what they’re capable of, you almost managed to escape me back on 8136.”
Petra blushed. Why did they care so much about what this man thought of them?
“Wait.” Something caught their attention. “Back on… where?”
“8136. That’s your Earth,” Miguel explained.
“My Earth? What are you talking about?”
Miguel closed his eyes and let out a breath. This was going to be more work than he thought.
“I’ll explain everything, okay? You just have to promise not to run away.” His face darkened. “Trust me, it won’t end well for you.”
Petra gulped, but ultimately, they had to concede. They didn’t know where they were, had nowhere to escape to and frankly, they kind of wanted to stay. Miguel was right—there was nothing for them back home. And these powers he claimed they had… they wanted to know more.
“Alright, Miguel O’Hara,” Petra finally said, feigning confidence they really didn’t have. “I guess I have no choice.”
“No, you really don’t,” Miguel said halfheartedly, with no bite on it at all. “I wish it didn’t have to be this way, kid. If we could save every world, well, we would. But we can’t.” He looked down at them, no longer shaking, but still apprehensive. This was uncharted territory for Miguel, but if he was certain of one thing, it was that he knew it was his responsibility to keep this tiny spider-person safe at all costs.
“I’m glad to give you a home here, though.”
