Ghoap Analysis/Meta (2.1)
The Evolution of GhostSoap Redux
Tumblr media
Recontextualising mwii(22) Ghost and Soap dialogue and what it could mean.
(Part 2.1/?)
BEWARE SPOILERS TO MWIII(23)!!!
As I said in part 1,
I, and arguably most of fandom had theorised that "Kill or Capture" was the first mission that Soap and Ghost ever had together. And we weren't quite right, but we weren't completely wrong either.
With Flashpoint, it's obvious now, that was not quite true. It even suggests in it that Ghost and Soap had worked together prior to even that, as there was no formal introduction between the two.
This dramatically changes how we can read their dialogue in mwii(22)
So let's go into the biggest bits of mwii(22).
Please also check the alt text.
Kill or Capture
"Kill or Capture" is the first mission players see Ghost and Soap together. Lets look into the first conversation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shepherd: (over radio) You're wheels-up in five.
Ghost: Roger.
Shepherd: Marines are loading in now. You and the Sergeant are leading the way on this.
A truck drives up and off-loads the Marines and Sergeant Johnny "Soap" MacTavish.
Ghost: The Sergeant?
Soap walks up to Ghost, brimming with enthusiasm.
Soap: Let's get ourselves a win, yeah, L.T.? Save ya a seat, sir...
Soap fist-bumps Ghost's shoulder and walks toward the plane.
Ghost: Fucking hell...
Shepherd: Ghost- you copy?
Ghost: Yes, sir.
Shepherd: Any issues?
Ghost: Negative, sir. Out here.
As I have stated previously, "Flashpoint" proves that Ghost and Soap have worked together 3 years ago prior to "kill or capture".
When I first watched this scene I assumed that Ghost was unhappy to be tacked on with a random sergeant by Shepherd.
Obviously this was wrong.
Ghost mentally and physically rolls his eyes here. If he's unhappy with a FNG/rando this makes perfect sense. Even the next dialogue suggests it, as he goads Soap into "keeping up" with him.
Ghost: Bravo Team offloads here. Alpha Team stays onboard to land downrange. Both teams meet in the middle. Remember, we want Hassan alive, but this is capture or kill.
Bravo Team stands up, including Soap who trades fist-bumps with a fellow Marine and joins Ghost.
Ghost: Keep up, Soap.
But this can't be true with "Flashpoint". Ghost knows Soap is at least competent from that mission in '19. He saw Soap handle himself out of a tricky situation. Ghost even calls out Soap for stealing one of his kills. The sergeant has Price to vouch for him as well.
So the question remains. Why is Ghost peeved at Soap joining him?
There's a variety of answers here, I said in part 1 that it might be that Soap had annoyed him in a limited capability over coms. There definitely have been times where Ghost tells Soap to cut the chatter in 2022. That could be a possibility.
If "Flashpoint" was Soap and Ghost's first mission together Ghost could also have remembered when Soap lost his head and threatened to kill Makarov in the heli. Only to have Price pull Soap back at the last moment.
He could be unhappy to be saddled with a known hot head. Add with the chatterbox issue and yeah, I could see Ghost making Soap prove he can follow orders. The next dialogue proves it as well.
Ghost: Alpha, how copy...?
Alpha 0-2: Bravo- Alpha is immobile. Multiple critical! Oh, shit-! We're taking effective fire!
Ghost: Alpha, we're moving to building 1. Hold tight!
Soap: Ghost, we need to secure that crash site now.
Ghost: First, we clear for Hassan, that takes the heat off Alpha. Then, we secure the crash site. Clear?
Soap: Roger that.
Hard to show, but in game, there was a definite emphasis in the clear. Ghost expects Soap to not follow him. Soap proves him wrong.
This also supports my theory that Soap had never worked directly under Ghost in those 3 years. If he did, then Ghost wouldn't be so uncertain about Soap; they would have already done this whole circus already. Ghost wouldn't have to goad him, and he def wouldn't need to emphasize so hard on the matter either.
Which also implies that their relationship was non existent up to that point. At most they were coworkers coexisting. Ghost would've considered Soap to have been an annoying hot head while Soap thought of him as a living legend (as we find out later in mwii (22) from his praises to Ghost).
This is a departure from the popular idea of Soap being "The Fucking New Guy" that has to prove himself competent. Ghost already knows he vaguely is. He's seen it for himself. Ghost just doesn't like Soap 🤣🤣🤣.
It's also supported in our timeline: Soap was already part of 141 by 2020 in Cod Warzone. Considering that Ghost and Soap have worked together previously in '19, it would be strange to not have them working on some missions together. Maybe not directly, but in the same mission roster. Ghost even sees Soap fight again in Dec 2020 when Price and co go and backup Soap in Verdansk.
Another possibility to consider would be that ghost didn't want to have any sort of partner/person he was responsible for.
As in the previous mission "Strike", and in cod warzone Mar 2020, we see Ghost going on solo missions. He seems to prefer it, infiltrating and disappearing like his namesake.
Perhaps having a subordinate is something he actively hates.
WHICH MAKES MWIII(23) MORE DELICIOUS. That means we see Ghost go from "I don't want a partner ever, especially not someone like this dumbass(4 years ago)" to asking Soap if he wanted to go on a mission with him and being paired with him always in mwiii(23). Until he isn't.
But more on that in part 3.
Lets go to the next mission.
Cartel Protection
Tumblr media
Alejandro looks at Ghost.
Alejandro: Lieutenant... Laswell says they call you Ghost.
Soap: Actually, I believe he prefers to be—
Ghost: That'll do.
When I first watched the introduction of Ghost and Soap to Alejandro and Rudy, I always found this conversation to be a bit jarring.
How would Soap know anything of Ghost? They were just introduced. Given the later implication of Ghost being some sort of legend, it's possible there was a different nickname hovering around. Or more embarrassingly, ghost preferred to go around being called "The Ghost" like how Soap says it to Rudy in "Prison Break".
With new context, perhaps there's more credence to a different name that was used during both of their SAS days working missions together. Perhaps there was a name that Price used instead? We'll never know. But it does set the tone of their relationship.
There's a comfortableness of Soap around Ghost. It's obvious in how Soap is able to joke around with Ghost despite his very imposing appearance. I assumed at the time it was down to Soap's fearlessness and his brightness. Having a spooky lieutenant wasn't gonna stop him from being his usual snarky excitable self.
Now I'm thinking more on Soap being comfortable, not only because of his character, but because he's worked with Ghost before. The fistbump and smile when Soap first sees Ghost in "Kill or Capture" supports it. There's an ease there (but also an unfamiliarness in their dialogue to each other in later missions) that speaks of a prior relationship. One that appears to be of (1) barely tolerant grump and (1) overly happy sunshine child that talks way too much.
This exchange seems to be a common occurrence and Soap already has a sense when jokes go too far (which would entail Ghost cutting Soap off with a gruff "That'll do" or his unamused dead stare).
We see this with this next bit:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rodolfo looks at Ghost through his rearview mirror.
Rodolfo: With your mask, you will fit in well here, Ghost.
Soap visibly tries to tell Rudy to stop joking with a classic 'cut it out' gesture and very wide eyes.
Alejandro: Ay, calmada... (Hey, easy...)
Again, this makes much more sense now that we know Soap and Ghost have worked together before. How many times has this happen with Soap in Rudy's shoes in the past 3 years? Taking one joke too far and resulting with a stony grim faced lieutenant that is visibly done with him? It's a wild thought.
What's even wilder is that we see this change in the next few days.
From Ghost cutting Soap off here in "Cartel Protection" to encouraging banter and making jokes to him in "Alone". But its surprisingly not "Alone" that was the turning point. It was THE definitive mission yes, but it's actually the mission, "El Sin Nombre", that has Ghost changing his mind about Soap.
Why?
Lets see.
El Sin Nombre
Tumblr media
Graves: Correcto. Get one of us inside, find the boss... roll him up.
Soap: I'll do it.
Alejandro: You go in there, and they'll kill you, hermano.
Soap: I'll take my chances. We came here to stop a missile, let's stop it. I'll offer intel for a meet with Sin Nombre. And if he's there, we pounce.
Alejandro: Órale. Tienes huevos, cabron. (Hell yeah- you've got balls, you son of a bitch.) You make it in, you'll need eyes and ears. I'll go too.
Ghost: I'll take overwatch. Shadow circles the target in a helo.
This is Soap's character defining moment. Here we see the crux of him: a fearless man, reckless and fiery. One crazy enough to brave getting purposely caught and taken for interrogation by cartel members.
But its not only us viewers who see this. It's also Ghost as well. We've already established that Ghost has a bare bones relationship with Soap. He'll work together with him, even compliment him on his skill while on missions, but anything closer than that-Ghost is noticeably cold.
Ghost doesn't tolerate Soap's jokes in or outside of missions, AND he most definitely doesn't joke back to him ever.
However, this moment impresses Ghost and we see him observing Soap while he gets himself purposely caught here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ghost spots Soap approaching the guards with his hands up in the air. The guards raise their weapons and fire warning shots on the ground in front of Soap, who complies with their orders.
Ghost: Visual on Soap.
Graves: Moment o' truth...
The guards force Soap to his knees.
Alejandro: They see him?
Ghost: They do now...
Ghost watches as the guards communicate on their radio with their guns pointed at Soap's head. They throw a black bag over Soap's head, haul him up to his feet, and perform a body search for weapons.
Ghost: They're taking him in.
Graves: Kid's got sand.
The guards escort Soap through the front gate.
Alejandro: I hope he makes it...
This is Ghost's defining moment to his relationship with Soap. Ghost is on overwatch. Probably done this a million times over. But this time it's different.
Who is this annoying man that would volunteer for something not even Ghost would dare do?
To leave himself exposed, in the hands of cartel members–tortured/killed if he says the wrong things. Ghost finds himself intrigued, invested for the first time in a long time. He wants Soap to succeed and not get killed. He cares.
And this is explicitly shown here. In this mission there's several ways to complete it. One of these options involve Ghost's help:
(If Soap heads outside the villa where Ghost can spot him...)
Ghost: Got a visual on you, Johnny. There's a trellis outside you can take to the roof.
Soap: What about Diego's keycard?
Ghost: Your call.
Ghost provides Soap with some hints.
Ghost: The AC units could get you on top of the garage. There's a ledge above you, Johnny.
Alejandro: Could help you get around that guard.
(If Soap climbs up the trellis to the roof...)
Soap: Moving to the roof.
Alejandro: Copy that! I'll be right behind you!
Soap reaches the roof and spots the guards.
Ghost: Multiple cartel up there. We'll have to clear it.
(If he kills the guards with Ghosts's help...)
Ghost: Roof's clear.
Soap proceeds further.
Ghost: Penthouse is in the north corner. Check the penthouse. I'll cover you.; El Sin Nombre is in the penthouse. North corner.
This is the very first time we see Ghost use the name Johnny. An important moment, because this is where everything starts rolling. Nicknames are a signifier of care. Soap isn't just another sergeant to Ghost anymore. He's no longer, Mactavish, Sergeant, Soap. He's more. He's Johnny.
Names have power. There's something to be said that by the act of naming something you bond with it— you make it yours. Nicknames are special to Ghost. And it's something we see hold true in mwii(23) as well. But that's for later.
Just let it sink in that it only took 5 days for Ghost to go from rolling his eyes and being done with Soap to giving the man a nickname. 5 days out of the 3 years we know have existed between them.
The next possible time we see Ghost use Johnny, it's in a heightened moment in the next mission "Dark Water". This event is non canon but supports my argument.*
If you stall in stopping the missile launch, Ghost will shout out Johnny to Soap. It's an adrenaline high moment and a critical point of life and death.
Now why does this matter ?
It matters because it proves that Ghost has only started using the nickname since "El Sin Nombre". There's a counter argument to be had that since Soap has known Ghost for so long, the nickname could have existed between them for x amount of time. Ghost could be upset at having Soap be his sergeant because he didn't want someone he cares for under his responsibility. Soap and Ghost have a prior relationship to mwii(22). What exactly happened between Apr '19 to Oct '22 is undefined.
But this is proven very unlikely because now we can tell that at this point of their relationship, Ghost only uses the name Johnny in moments of heightened emotion.
The two Johnnys we got in "El Sin Nombre" had Ghost using it the moment he sighted Soap alive. At the time, Ghost was unsure if Soap was still breathing. Seeing him near/on the roof was a moment of high stress/emotion.
What's another moment of high stress?
Jumping off a cliff in "Cartel Protection" just a couple days earlier.
If Ghost had already cared about Soap then, it's highly unlikely a Johnny wouldn't escape his lips at that moment.
Alejandro, Rudy, Ghost and Soap were on the run from the Mexican army. Pinned down and nowhere else to go but a free dive at least 50 m down off a random cliff and noone but Ale/Rudy to trust in (men they had just met prior that day). I don't see Ghost not shouting Johnny at that point. Tellingly, we see Ghost use the name Soap instead when yelling at the sergeant to jump.
I could be completely wrong about this, but personally, I don't see Ghost as able to stop himself from using nicknames.
As we find out through "Alone", Ghost is a massive hypocrite. There's much he tells Soap to do but doesn't actually follow himself. As a result there are three things to pay attention to when discerning his motivations: His nicknames, his stares and his actions.
This is actually seen in the pivotal mission "Alone" and later in "Prison Break".
It's the tonal and plot shift in the game. From then on their relationship isn't Ghost and random sergeant like in "Flashpoint" in 2019. It's not even Ghost and (the annoying sergeant) Soap, at the start of the game in "Kill or Capture".
They become SoapAndGhost against the world. Or rather, JohnnyAndGhost.
And even more rare: JohnnyAndSimon.
But I will split the post off here.
On to part 2.2 (the other half of mwii)—when I get there. The Alone segment is promising to be very long since it's the bulk of all Ghoap interactions. It will be awhile till I get there 😔.
+
Any questions, comments, arguments on the discussion, feel free to buzz me on it. I always did feel that having an opposite opinion strengthens your own arguments.
Can I call myself a Ghostsoap scholar now? I will try to answer any questions to my best ability.

Inform 7 Basics (#17: locale paragraphs redux)
Not too long ago, I wrote a post about locale paragraphs. Some questions arose! Let's return to the subject. The locale paragraph, you probably remember, is the list of things in a room that Inform 7 automatically adds to a room description (when looking, for instance).
rule for printing a locale paragraph about the goat: set the locale priority of the goat to zero.
The documentation recommends this method for omitting items from the paragraph, and it works. Inform will not mention the goat after printing the room description. If we want add custom text for printing the paragraph, we can build onto that.
rule for printing a locale paragraph about the goat: set the locale priority of the goat to zero; say "The goat eyes you suspiciously.".
That all works very well. We can even make conditional text for the paragraph:
rule for printing a locale paragraph about the goat: set the locale priority of the goat to zero; say "[if the goat is not placated]The goat eyes you suspiciously.[otherwise]The goat gives you a friendly little bleat.[end if]".
This is more than enough for many games (including RTE), but every game is different. Let's look at the broader landscape of the "locale description." The locale description is a complex process and its product. It governs the mechanics of Inform 7 deciding what items should be part of the paragraph, contains a mechanism for enumerating them, handles special cases that we have defined, and so forth. Because of its scope and complexity, I will probably never (really!) recommend dealing with the locale description in code. The entire process is laid out in the standard rules, and the documentation about it is here.
The intermediate process in terms of complexity is printing a locale paragraph. It also deals with assigning priority to items (as we've seen), but is a subset of functions performed by the locale description.
While I did not mention it, there are other mechanics for determining which items do and do not get listed in locale paragraphs. We can deal with cases individually with rules for writing locale paragraphs about things. But what if we wanted to deal with a kind of item? This is a corner case I haven't encountered, but the mechanism is this:
Rule for choosing notable locale objects for the lab: repeat with item running through things in the lab: set the locale priority of the item to 5; repeat with item running through sandwiches in the lab: set the locale priority of the item to 0.
Whew! Bear with me, ok? What we are doing with this code is committing to setting the locale priority for every item in this room. Remember how the locale description process builds a list of items for printing and not printing? We can manipulate this process by characterizing each item in that list. The line
repeat with item running through things in the lab:
tells Inform to do exactly that. Note that "item" is a name we've given to individual objects in the list of "things" (things is an Inform 7 term). We would just as easily say
repeat with thingy running through things in the lab:
For each thing on that list, our rule manually sets the locale priority to five, guaranteeing that it will be printed in the locale paragraph. After this has been accomplished, our code turns to a kind, "sandwiches," for further customization:
repeat with snack running through sandwiches in the lab: set the locale priority of the snack to 0.
You might wonder: why did we have to set everything to five first? With this kind of rule, we can accidentally wipe everything from the locale paragraph. It's a good practice to think about the entire locale priority listing when intervening in this way.
This isn't my favorite practice. I'd rather not have to account for everything. But sometimes it's what's needed.
Another option is building the list ourselves.
Before listing nondescript items: say "You can see [a list of unmentioned things in the location] strewn across the floor."; repeat with named thing running through things: now the named thing is not marked for listing.
This one is different, isn't it? Because it starts with "BEFORE", we know that this rule is directly intervening in action processing. In the Standard Rules, we see that "listing nondescript items" is an activity that takes during the locale description process. We are circumventing part of that mechanism here. What mechanism? One thing that happens during the locale description process is that things begin as unmentioned but end as mentioned. Inform 7 doesn't want to print locale information for the same object multiple times.
That's one piece of this mechanic. The other is that items can be marked or not marked for listing. Things that are marked for listing are run through in lists (like the list of unmentioned things here or the list of sandwiches above). A mentioned, unmarked thing is going to fall through almost every check and enumeration. If we wanted something to fall through the cracks, we could make a small change, like this:
Before listing nondescript items: now the apple is mentioned; say "You can see [a list of unmentioned things in the location] strewn across the floor."; repeat with named thing running through things: now the named thing is not marked for listing.
Since the apple is "mentioned," the locale description process will not mention it.
Finally, there are tactics like this. This one might be the best and easiest. Why didn't I mention it, then? One of the tactics is not mentioned in the documentation, and an alternative is. If you don't mind going off-label, consider this code:
Rule for writing a paragraph about the apple: now the apple is mentioned.
Here, we are telling Inform 7 that the apple has already been mentioned. Note the syntax difference between "printing a locale paragraph" and "writing a paragraph"? This process is yet another step removed in terms of scope and power from the "printing a locale description" activity. We can write paragraphs the same way we print locale paragraphs. Consider this rule:
Rule for writing a paragraph about the goat: say "The goat eyes you suspiciously.".
What if we wanted to do something else? Perhaps we want to mix custom text and automatically-generated text. Let's try something like this:
Rule for writing a paragraph about the goat: now the goat is mentioned; say "The goat eyes the [list of unmentioned things in the location] suspiciously.".
There's another list. Why did I state that the goat was mentioned? Since the goat won't actually be mentioned until the rule is processed, we need to handle it ourselves. Otherwise, it will appear in the "list of unmentioned things in the location." The output looks solid:
The goat eyes the apple, hat, cat, and table suspiciously.
Caveats and Warnings:
These rules can get tangled up with one another, and the results can be hard to troubleshoot. To keep yourself out of trouble:
Try to pick a single strategy and stick with it.
Consider giving names to some of these rules, because it can simplify troubleshooting down the line. The phrasing is simple: "rule for writing a paragraph about the goat (this is the broken locale paragraph rule):". Your goal is to pick something that will appear unique during debugging and also be easy to CTRL-F find.
Be specific! That paragraph for the apple is great, but what happens when the player picks up the apple and drops it in another room? It might not make sense anymore.
Rule for writing a paragraph about apple when player is in lab: now the apple is mentioned.
And so forth. If this post feels like a lot, don't worry too much about all of it. Focus on what you can use right now. Have you begun to maintain a scratch project with bits of useful sample code? Consider it! Note that in Inform 7, comments are enclosed by brackets and not in quotation marks (brackets inside quotation marks are text substitutions and conditions). Next time (Monday), we'll talk about built-in organizational tools for keeping code manageable and readable.
Here's some sample code. Some methods are commented out. You may want to experiment with them. You can take the apple (which won't show up in the room description), carry it south, drop it, and look. It will be listed.
As always, feel free to AMA.

Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favourite opening line.
1. you are (my favourite place) (DaMian try to matchmake Weilan and end up matchmaking themselves instead.)
It's a beautiful day out.
2. bury the hatchet or bury a friend (Ye Zun comes back to life and tries to figure out what the f*ck he’s meant to do now - feat. sagely advice from a cat.)
Not everyone can say that they've come back to life.
3. emptiness is safe (WeiZun YOHE identity porn with a hopeful ending. Warning for consensual incest.)
The Chieftain is going to kill him.
4. it's so nice to meet you (let's never meet again) (DaMian try fake-dating to get back at Weilan for being Weilan.)
"Do you think they know how disgusting they are?"
5. another (level) (short DaMian Venom AU, where Da Qing finds that he’s now sharing a body with a Symbiote. a part of the same series as wavelength)
Da Qing wakes up to the taste of death in his mouth and Xiao Qing batting at his face.
6. nothing stays the same (DaMian YOHE au. Ye Zun is not a fan of his brother’s suitor and wants to make sure everyone knows it - especially General Kunlun.)
"I don't trust him."
7. bruises on both my knees (for you) (WeiZun. Ye Zun does his best to make Shen Wei crack and, well, f*ck him. Warning for consensual incest.)
Of the two of them, Shen Wei is undoubtedly everyone's favourite.
8. veto (Shen Wei & Ye Zun, short missing scene from mens rea - my serial killer AU.)
“Anger-management issues, gege?”
9. nundum pactum (Weilan serial killer au set in the culpa universe that mens rea is a part of though it’s not a part of the official timeline.)
Zhao Yunlan is in the middle of washing blood off his neck when he feels two arms slip around his waist.
10. the image of you lingers (Weilan, Zhao Yunlan decides to go hiking and ends up changing his life forever. also known as drama!ZYL vs novel!SW.)
"That time of the year again, Boss?"
11. look (part of my redux series where I try to get Weilan to get together during different parts of the drama. this is episode 14.)
"Shen Wei, ah, keep looking like that and I'll start thinking you'd rather I asked you to kiss me."
12. commencing download (another way gamer Weilan could have gotten together in my ready, set, game on universe.)
Zhao Yunlan wakes up to find that his Weibo has blown up.
13. actus reus (in which Zhao Yunlan tries to deal with Shen Wei’s brother deciding to flirt with him - or the Weilanzun sequel to mens rea. Warning for consensual incest.)
Zhao Yunlan doesn't remember the last time he was this happy – if he ever has been.
14. love in (binary code) (the Almost Human Weilan AU where Zhao Yunlan falls in love with his android police partner.)
"Why is there an MX out there claiming to be my partner?"
15. your sweet kiss (the Mr & Mrs Smith Weilan AU - or the one where they’re both assassins.)
Zhao Yunlan wonders if this is how he dies, with a knife to his throat and a finger that refuses to move on the trigger.
16. all the better to ki** you with, my dear (the Grimm Weilan AU where Zhao Yunlan has to deal with secrets, monsters, his father dying, and an ancient entity proclaiming his love for him - not necessarily in that order.)
Zhao Yunlan gets the call when he's on his way back from work.
17. (love) the way you lie (a Weilan the Proposal AU where Zhao Yunlan realises he might like his cold-hearted boss a little more than he thought...and that Shen Wei might not be as cold-hearted as he looks.)
This is the first time Zhao Yunlan has seen Shen Wei look nervous.
18. blood and chocolate (the Weilan Hannibal AU where Zhao Yunlan has to reconcile that he just might be in love with a cannibal - and that the cannibal loves him back.)
There is no easy way to describe what Shen Wei is to him.
19. your house is my home (the FAKE AU where Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei are police partners - and also totally married, Shen Wei just needs to admit it already.)
Zhao Yunlan has never had a proper home.
20. a leather jacket and a kiss (the Hawaii Five-0 AU where Zhao Yunlan is dealing with his crush on Shen Wei...until Zhu Hong decides to give Shen Wei a makeover.)
Zhao Yunlan meets Shen Wei during what is arguably the second-worst week of his life.
I tag: @kakushigo, @voidslantern, @tk-duveraun, and anyone else that wants to do this. yes, I mean you!

Season 2 Sanders Sides by how mean Roman is to Logan
It’s not nearly as bad as I thought
Nice
Hogwarts Houses: 2/10
Roman was trying not to insult Virgil and ended up not really insulting anyone. Good job, Roman.
Moving On pt 1: 4/10 for “oh hush, sub-astute teacher”(Holy shit I just understood that pun) He was being influenced by Patton’s room tho
Moving On pt 2: 0/10!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
12 Days of Christmas: 5/10 cuz he was stressed, but 0/10 by the time we got to the Secret Santa
CLBG: uhhh 1/10? They didn’t interact directly that much and they had that cute moment with the iambic pentameter banter
Logic vs Passion: 6.5/10. They were both lashing out but “haha more like squadless geek! Cuz you’re ALONE” got to me :(
Crofters: The Musical!: 0/10 Roman sad
LNTAO: oooooh boy 9/10. If you watch the argument from the bloopers it gets way worse. Virgil even has to call Roman out for insulting Logan instead of contributing to the conversation. But then they high-five so that’s good ig
Embarrassing Phases: 2/10? Again, they don’t interact that much
SvS: THIS IS WHY I MADE THIS POST OK 15/10 LOGAN WASN’T DOING ANYTHING MEAN AND ROMAN WAS BEING SUCH A JERK
“Did you see Logan’s face?” me: >:(
Roman wasn’t in a great place but jeez
DWIT: 3/10 for “I can’t believe you’re making me do this” but then he gets concussed so idk
Redux: 4/10. Roman mocks Logan’s Lowdowns and insultingly mouths “behoove” when Logan’s talking. But he asked what Janus did to Logan and honestly he was wayyy too preoccupied with his black-and-white morality being shaken to the foundation when Thomas accepted Janus because if Janus is good what is he? he’s supposed to be the good twin why-
And it turned into Roman angst *insert shrug emoji*
But seriously I might make a separate post compiling all the insults in SvS because that hurteddd

Preview
On September 30th, 2017, Ed Orgeron’s LSU Tigers lost at home to Troy. It was the 2nd loss in three weeks and things were starting to get uncomfortable for Coach O just five games into his first full season as the Tigers’ head coach. Rumors of infighting between the head man and offensive coordinator Matt Canada were rampant. With a trip to the Swamp up next and Auburn coming to town a week later, it sure seemed like a possible Ole Miss redux was underway in Baton Rouge. Ed O was once again the joke of the SEC.
But not for long.
LSU has lost exactly five games since that Troy upset. They rallied to beat Florida and Auburn in successive weeks and finished 9-4 in 2017. LSU followed up with a 10 win season in 2018. Then in 2019, Coach O and the Tigers went out and won the whole damn thing behind the most prolific offense in college football history.
Ain’t no one laughing now except Coach O.
What LSU accomplished in 2019 was remarkable. Joe Burrow transformed from mediocre QB that needed max protect every other snap to a Heisman winner who excelled at getting his playmakers the ball behind 5 man protections. It was an offense that was downright unstoppable, only scoring less than 35 points once in 2019. But even in that one contest against Auburn’s stout defense, LSU still put up over 500 yards of offense.
I mean just look at those numbers. Joe Burrow threw SIXTY touchdown passes. Ja’Marr Chase caught TWENTY touchdowns. Justin Jefferson had ONE HUNDRED AND ELEVEN receptions. Terrace Marshall missed 3 games and still caught THIRTEEN touchdowns. Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for more yards than any AU running back last season and would have finished #2 in receiving for Malzahn’s Tigers. Just insanity.
But can they do it again? Joe Brady, former no name NFL analyst turned offensive wunderkind, is gone to the NFL. Long time stud defensive coordinator Dave Aranda is now the head coach at Baylor. Fourteen members of the 2019 national champions were drafted in the NFL.
Winning championships is hard. Winning multiple championships is much harder. Just ask Larry Coker, Gene Chizik, Mack Brown, Jimbo Fisher and countless others who reached the mountain top only to see their programs crumble underneath them. Will Coach 0 join them or is this only the start of his ascension?
Fortunately for LSU, elite talent remains, it’s just unproven. Myles Brennan has the daunting task of replacing Joe Burrow. A former blue chip prospect, Brennan has patiently waited his turn and folks in Baton Rouge think highly of his upside. But he won’t be as good as Burrow this fall. The question is how big a step back does LSU’s offense take from Burrow to Brennan?
Luckily for LSU’s new starting QB, plenty of skill talent remains. Yes, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Justin Jefferson and Thaddeus Moss are all gone. But the nation’s best wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase is back as is former 5-star Terrace Marshall Jr. LSU also returns two former 5-star running backs in John Emery and Tyrion Davis-Prince along with former blue chip Chris Curry. There’s also an assortment of young WR talent that looks poised to make an impact including 5-star freshman Kayshon Boutte.
Oh and they signed one of the freakiest athletes of the 2020 class in Arik Gilbert. Seriously, this kid is absurd and will be a bone fide stud in LSU’s offense.
Probably the most underrated piece of that LSU offense last season was its offensive line. The Tigers often relied on only 5 man protections and this unit was outstanding all year HOLDING up against elite pass rushes. However, four starters have departed with right tackle Austin Deculus the lone man returning. There’s definitely plenty of talent up front it’s just about getting it to gel quickly enough to execute the Tigers RPO heavy offense.
On defense, Dave Aranda is gone and a familiar face has returned to roam the Tigers sidelines. Bo Pelini is back in Power 5 football following five years as head coach at Youngstown State. He took the Penguins to the FCS National Championship his 2nd year but was unable to replicate that success in his following 3 campaigns. Under Pelini, LSU will be transitioning back to a four man front meaning some pieces on this defense will have to adjust to new responsibilities and positions this fall.
Up front, LSU is loaded as always. K’Lavon Chaisson, Rashard Lawrence and Breiden Fehoko are all gone but plenty of talent returns. The Tigers have some big fellas to eat up the middle in guys like Tyler Shelvin, Saiki Ika and Glen Logan. On the edge, LSU will have to make some adjustments transitioning from 3-4 OLBs to 4-3 DEs. There are a lot of different faces that will get looks at this position but keep an eye on former JUCO TE prospect T.K. McClendon. Ed O has been consistent in praising his development and the scheme change better fits his skillset. He could be a breakout player for this Tiger defense in 2020.
One of the positions hardest hit by attrition was linebacker where Patrick Queen and Jacob Phillips both decided to leave for the NFL following the 2019 season. Luckily for LSU, they landed one of the premier grand transfers on the market in former North Dakota State star Jabril Cox. He will likely earn a starting role on the outside while someone like Damone Clark takes over at the MIKE.
Two starters depart in Thorpe Award winner (lol) Grant Delpit and cornerback Kristian Fulton. But arguably the nation’s best corner, Derek Stingley Jr, returns along with nickel back Kary Vincent Jr and safety JaCoby Stevens. Former Auburn commit Cordale Flott looks to be the incumbent at the corner spot opposite Stingley while former AU target Maurice Hampton likely fills in for Delpit at safety. The Tigers also signed the #1 CB in the nation in the 2020 class in Elias Ricks who could easily see time early on the back end of LSU’s defense.
2019 was a magical season for LSU. They put a fun brand of football on the field and used it to obliterate most every opponent that stood in their way. But 2020 will likely provide a few more stumbling blocks. So much production is gone and with two brand new coordinators, it’s hard to see LSU repeating in 2020. Auburn gets the defending champs at home this fall. If Gus Malzahn is ever going to beat Ed Orgeron, it better be this year.

time for this boy
this one is forever entangled in my head with The Time I Accidentally Went to Sleaford, because i wrote all of it on the day when i did trains very wrong, and ended up in sleaford. so the writing of this one was like: on platform waiting for train, on train blissfully unaware that i was heading in entirely the wrong direction, on train once i was informed of the mishap and was finished panicking & complaining to various people about the fact that i was going to sleaford, in the costa nearest the station while consuming a self-pity brownie because it was february & freezing cold & the next train wasn’t for an hour & there were 0 indoor areas open at the station, then eventually on a train going in the correct direction. i got home with 2/3 of it done and was like well i will just relax now and finish it tomorrow, which i managed for about 20 minutes before i just had to keep writing. most i have ever written in one day, academic writing included. apparently the secret to productivity is just making travel mistakes that take five hours to resolve
i have said this before but in my heart this one is called “uninvited guest” from a tmg lyric. thought of it a day too late
do you ever just think about the existential horror of being enfleshed in another human being’s body, because i feel like we understandably gloss over that in a lot of body swap stuff. like, every day up until now you have woken up as you, and then one day you just don’t. akin to the sun not rising in terms of catastrophising anxiety scenarios, plus the weirdness of just the fact that different people feel differently. different lungs, different aches, different eyesight. had to have shinsou just utterly lose it here to explore some of the inherently fucked up nature of this trope
along similar lines, the inherent invasion of privacy there is so interesting and a little horrible to me! body swap stuff i’ve read usually touches on this a little, usually in terms of awkwardness around changing outfits and showering, but like...nakedness is not the extent of the issue for sure. suddenly having all this access to someone’s private space, to the person they are when there’s no one else around, feeling the physical sensations they might have chosen to keep hidden, seeing their scars, learning what it’s like to be them...it’s magical and a little terrible, i think. it prompts a lot of empathy for shinsou here that is ultimately good for both of them, but the situation itself involves a lot of vulnerability and exposure not of their choosing, and i tried to keep both of those elements in mind when writing.
oh, random body swap quirk villain, how i treasure thee. i feel like when other people write random villains they’re like: here’s something interesting and scary and cool, and i’m like: here’s a disaster who’s never once achieved any of their goals? in my mind the dude tries to swap people who are fighting him for the purposes of disorienting them so he can get away, but his concentration and general control is poor enough that a much weaker connection occurs between the kids in his firing line instead, a psychic link that only manages to take effect once they’re sleeping
i had a lot of fun here trying to capture a voice in shinsou-perspective narration that was kind of quippier and sharper and more wry than what i usually go for with izuku’s or even aizawa’s
i profoundly relate to the problem-solving methods shinsou employs here, namely: 1. go back to sleep and pretend nothing is happening, 2. snoop, 3. Go Back To Sleep and pretend nothing is happening; panicked redux
i’m not like shinsou in terms of keeping his room very spartan but i do also just Get It. both ways that these boys try to gain a sense of agency feel very real to me even though i don’t exactly do either of them. that’s something i really enjoy about writing, i think - as much as i like to joke that i’m always projecting onto characters, it’s fun to kind of explore a way of thinking, feel it out until it seems authentic and real, but also have it be totally separate to how you feel about things. it’s also why i think Write What You Know shouldn’t be taken too literally, because what i know are just like...broad yet specific feelings that can be applied to a lot of things?
it’s a good thing that i’m p sure this quirk was weak enough to just wear off on its own, because i think aizawa’s soul just fully exits his body when he discovers this situation occurred. he was on a bus with these children for So Long. then his class got attacked by villains again, albeit useless ones, and he had/got to just chuck them about until they were subdued. but no, a problem is never over that soon, not with this hell class. i’m pretty sure he only agreed to this vague field trip in the first place because he wanted to help shinsou connect with the rest of the class, which technically kind of worked, but also god at what cost. the man already has 20 kids to deal with. now their consciousnesses can just go hopping around? Great, Excellent, he’s resigning
i have a lot of feelings about shinsou saving a kid and getting only fear back and wondering if he would have tried again if things played out like that again...similar to sth i wrote in something else to pretend about izuku sometimes wishing he could just ignore the kids kacchan is picking on. not sure how to articulate it exactly...something about how being good doesn’t mean you never think these kinds of things, or at least i don’t think it does. it doesn’t mean you’re never hurt & tired & scared & just want to look after yourself. for all bnha’s love of heroes, i think it gets this too; the moments when the kids are just terrified and desperate to run anywhere else. bravery isn’t synonymous with a lack of fear
shinsou is Growing here and i’m proud of him. i find it interesting how like...shinsou being very much In The Right about how ppl treated him bc of his quirk doesn’t mean he hasn’t picked up some maladaptive behaviours from that time. parallels with izuku again.

Five-0 Redux: Fatherhood figures as common element on ‘Hawaii Five-0’
By Wendie Burbridge, Special to the Star-Advertiser
The story of fathers and sons have been one of the consistent themes in “Hawaii Five-0” since the start of the series. If we think back to the pilot episode, it was the shocking death of McGarrett’s father, John (William Sadler), which caused Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) to return to Hawaii. Once Steve met Det. Danny Williams (Scott Caan), who was the lead investigator on his father’s murder case, the two joined forces and started the Five-0 task force. This birthed a kind of family, or ohana, that still exists within the team 10 years later.
Being a father, or a father figure to others is a common characterization within the show. Many of the strongest relationships between the characters are based on the idea of fatherhood. This season the storylines that spotlighted what it means to be a father were complicated and emotionally difficult. This is not something new, but it seemed as if this year’s stories often left viewers sad and feeling raw, even if a story came to a satisfying conclusion. Two major events seemed to stand out over the year — both focusing on tough moments between fathers and their children, real or assumed.
A FATHER PUT TO THE TEST
Danny is one of the characters who has been a father from the start of the series. His children, Grace (Teilor Grubbs) and Charlie (Zach Sulzbach), who call him Danno, have not only been a huge part of his life, but they also have driven what kind of cop he is, and what cases seem to matter to him. Whenever the victim is a child or when a suspect has put a child in danger — Danny seems to move into Super Danno mode. When Danny’s children are in trouble or in danger there is no stopping what Danno will do for them.
This season Daddy Danno was put to the ultimate test when Grace is involved in a terrible car accident and has brain surgery in order to save her life. While Danny and Rachel (Claire van der Boom), his ex-wife and Grace and Charlie’s mother, wait to find out the fate of their daughter, they discuss their past and seem to make peace with each other. Danny never allowed his anger about being kept from his children to turn into bitterness or revenge against their mother — which made being a father much easier and his children much happier.
In the episode, both Danny and Steve struggle with the thought of something happening to Grace. Steve would do anything for Danny’s children and loves them as if they were his own blood. When Uncle Steve finds out that Grace was not at fault for the accident, but had been run off the road by another car in a high-speed chase, both men are very proud of her and the action she tried to take in order to save herself and a friend. And extremely happy she made it through alive.
A FATHER’S LAST WORDS
One of the most popular episodes of the season, has to be the episode where McGarrett’s SEAL mentor and family friend, Joe White, dies after trying to save them from a team of assassins. Joe has sometimes been seen as a friend, a mentor, and sometimes as an adversary of McGarrett’s. In this season’s fall finale he comes to find McGarrett to protect him from a hit squad who is intent on killing all of the members of their SEAL team. In the last few seasons Joe, who often called McGarrett “son,” has often given McGarrett and the team a helping hand.
Joe’s passing was both heartbreaking and beautiful. It was the farewell that McGarrett never got to share with his own father. After defeating the hit team, Joe is critically wounded but as McGarrett tries to get him help, Joe has them stop so that they can watch the impending sunset near his favorite ponderosa pine tree — knowing that these are his last moments.
McGarrett thanks Joe for saving his life when he was a teenager. When Joe got him out of jail after he had stolen a car, it changed the course of his life because he never would have had the chance to become a SEAL or start Five-0. McGarrett tells Joe it was then that he realized someone believed in him, even though he’d given up believing in himself.
And while McGarrett thinks he is thanking the man who was the closest thing to a father he had when his mother was supposedly dead and his father a long way away in Hawaii — Joe tells McGarrett: “You have thanked me every day since with the man you’ve become. The way I looked out for you, that’s the way that you watch over the people in your life now. I couldn’t be prouder of the man you’ve become.” It is exactly what McGarrett needed to hear as he loses the last father figure in his life.
For the most part, Father’s Day is a celebration of the men we call “dad” in our lives. But sometimes these men could be called a nickname like “Danno” or “uncle” or even “friend.” In true Five-0 fashion, it doesn’t matter what a father is called, as long as they are there when they are needed.
