Here’s a theory I made up while I watched The Fnaf Movie that only increased when I read the book based on it.
I've considered the relationship between Golden Freddy and The Marionette to be very complex. Cassidy and Garrett share a relationship like no other that even the other children couldn't come close by. And I felt like this idea was further implemented in the book.
When Mike dreamed of the restaurant and the ghost kids appeared before him, he asked a simple question.
The blond boy, or as we know it Cassidy, smiles.
He'd planning something, obviously, but he needed more time to think this through. Imagine the shock he had to have to see Mike Schmidt himself, the older brother of Garrett Schmidt. He didn't need to talk to him, not yet, at least.
So he waits for one more time, just to see how desperate Mike really is.
He's desperate.
Very desperate.
It’s perfect, sad, but something that Cassidy needed to confirm about what he was planning.
The next time they see each other, it's slightly different, but something changes when Mike mentions Garrett.
Again, Cassidy is shocked, like the mention of Garrett's ‘disappearing’ sparked a memory in him. Whether it was good or bad, it was obvious it was enough to make him talk.
But Mike keeps talking and an idea is planted in Cassidy’s mind along with his negative thoughts.
Mike wanted to see who took Garrett, no matter the cost, and that was enough for Cassidy to go through his plan.
It's not perfect, Cassidy had to admit it, but it was just what Mike wanted.
A dream.
A fantasy.
A distraction from reality itself.
Mike doesn't want to find Garrett.
Mike doesn't want to find out who took Garrett.
He wants to save Garrett but on his own terms.
That's it.
He doesn't care where Garrett went, who he became, and what had transpired to have made Cassidy and the others who and what they are right now.
He dreams of the same thing, over and over again, reliving a memory he cannot change. Running after the same black car, crying out for his little brother, never getting close, and losing all at once. All this time, Cassidy could see that all Mike wanted was to heal that deep cut of guilt within himself that he couldn't fix over the years.
Was that all he was doing?
It didn't seem like he was doing enough from Cassidy’s point of view.
Was this the brave older brother Garrett loved to talk about constantly towards the others? To make all five of them stop fighting he would tell a story of how he and Mike would fight but learn to forgive each other later on. Like how despite the five of them not being blood-related they should treat each other like friends, siblings even if they want to combat the bad days with good.
He wasn't brave.
He was a coward.
He could barely hold himself up, hardly make himself look presentable in front of a single person, and leave Abby on her own. I mean that babysitter of hers wasn't going to do her any good, she was dead the moment she stepped into this restaurant.
If Cassidy can't have Garrett back then Mike can't have Abby either.
He knows it won't be the same, to have Garrett’s sister be a sort of strange replacement. There's this kind of void in his chest that he can't fill up. Ever since Garrett had ‘disappeared’ things weren't the same. It was hard to keep everyone together at all since everyone looked up to Garrett and had their own thoughts about Cassidy as a whole.
But Cassidy considers this a good thing, to have Abby in the team and fill up these gaping holes in their chests and make them feel whole again.
Garrett can't be here to say what needs to be done, but Cassidy can do that for him.
He's sure he can.
And maybe Abby can help them find Garrett, besides, they’re siblings, so there's no doubt a connection is bound to happen no matter how far they are.

So the first 20 pages of the FNAF movie novelization came out (full thing releases December 26) and here are some fun bits from it!
-The Security Guard's name who dies another beginning is named Bob
-It kept in the scene where the security guard is dragged down the hallway which was cut from the film, which means other deleted scenes could be seen later
-Mike is 25
-Mike is also 5'6, even though Josh is 5'5, which means that Mike wears heels.
-Mike is completely oblivious to the fact that Cindy (the ice cream girl) likes him.
-Mike went on a date when he was in high school and the girl said his eyes were 'intense'
-Mike didn't get to go to college
-Mike was getting Jeremiah a chocolate shake when he was getting the ice cream for himself (:
-When beating up the guy in the fountain, Mike saw blood in the water, which triggered a very dark memory (Here's the full thing)
But yeah! I can't wait for the full novel I already know I'm gonna lose my mind over it!
