i found out about the slap stick from reading about commedia del'arte which i would recommend bc its a total brain blast. its kind of like... idk if youve experienced this but for me reading about vaudeville contextualizes all of hollywood as an industry in a really eye-opening way bc you see this whole lineage. and thats just one example for one industry, many such cases obvs. but like commedia del'arte is like legitimately the grandaddy of All Of It, its like THE fount from which all these different entertainment disciplines can trace their roots. its wild. did you know the term "pleased as punch" is more accurately transcribed as "pleased as Punch" bc Punch is a character from a folk-traditional archetypical british puppet show? which itself has its origins in you guessed it commedia del'arte. theres hundreds of tidbits like this one could cite. dont even get me started on the harlequin
YES reading abt the commedia was exactly how i came across this! (well kinda, i'm reading a bio of first ever clown joseph grimaldi and the author was describing one of the bits he was doing and it featured said stick) and it really is crazy how much of what we know today goes back to it! it's like a cultural entertainment funnel lmao. i've read a fair bit about the commedia and that's why it's wild to me i'd never come across the stick- the sources i'd been able to get my hands on were all like, hoity toity academic literature that very rarely delved into what the performances actually looked like. it was all about the cultural context of the plays and its characters, which is great! but i was shocked how hard it was to find anything telling me what the dang shows would actually look like, and now i'm just thinking of what other juicy deets i've missed out on. i've also had trouble finding literature abt Punch and Judy shows so i don't know much about them other than a vague awareness of the ties to the commedia, i love that that's where pleased as punch comes from! also please do get started on the harlequin i'm all fucking about the harlequin lay it on me baby

if i could go back in time, i would go back to the medieval days and bring with me vaccinations and the brightest neon fool's outfit i can get my hands on. then i would go taunt all the other fools with how much more colorful i am than them. i would hope for an enemies to lovers arc where a fool tries to seduce me for my chemical dye secrets but we fall in love instead and become the most colorful beautiful lover fools in all the land.

right, hot demons (1872) takes at 9AM
i've been reading the p&v translation and just. thinking thoughts. and i really want to consider something
i know that marya is considered the 'holy fool' of demons, she is explicitly religious and speaks in prophetic manner, and it is almost outright stated that she's meant to represent the idea of russian orthodoxy and religion as it is corrupted by new ideas of socialism and atheism BUT
do we think that shatov could also technically be classed as a 'holy fool' (additionally, can a character who doesn't believe in god in the first place be classed as a holy fool? i say yes, but more on that later)? he is also supposed to represent slavophilism, russian orthodoxy, the 'salt-of-the-earth' typical russian man. yeah, he's adamant in his religion, inspired particularly by stavrogin, and insists on the importance of faith. he's also a bit of a simpleton as we see throughout the whole book and is often guided by his heart rather than his head, and while it's not so much his faith that guides him, it's rather his own moral compass and belief in religion that motivates a lot of his actions. you could probably argue that he wouldn't have split from the conspirators were it not for his recalibrated views on faith and religion.
i don't really believe there's any solid dimensions as to what a holy fool should be. hey, it's even implied in brothers k multiple times that alyosha, our beloved holy fool of that novel, might not even believe in god himself. since the concept of religion and the conflict between faith and atheism is so prominent in demons i think it's fair to argue that shatov and marya could both equally be holy fools in their own sense. marya being the characterization of wholehearted and foolish faithfulness, shatov being faith as an ideology, as a concept, as something separate from the person. this doesn't really make sense and i think a lot of this is just me spitballing but i want to see if other people have thoughts on this
i'm putting this under the cut bc this post is already long enough and i just thought of this as i was reading, but the relationship between shatov and marya is emphasized so heavily throughout the first half of the book it almost seems purposeful. they have one of the sweetest and most gentle dynamics in the entire book compared with how chaotic everything else is and that feels...... intentional
also, bonus question for the people who clicked below the cut: can fedka the convict be classed as a holy fool too? his regret towards his actions, his condemnation of pyotr's atheism in the latter half of the book, his constant association with churches and places of worship. just..... a thought.
