Super Mario Odyssey Travelogue - Cascade Kingdom
Tumblr media
Land of Waterfalls and Natural Treasures
After the gloomy and gray Cap Kingdom, it's time to start our world expedition properly in Fossil Falls, the last holdout of history. This place just oozes with an adventurous spirit. Loosely inspired by the South American Iguazu Falls, this kingdom contains vast waterfalls everywhere you look. Combined with the larger than life natural structures and prehistoric wonders both fossilized and alive, in some ways, it's unlike anything we've seen in a Mario game. This feeling is backed up by an incredible music track that makes you want to boldly explore. But the bright colors and familiar level structure have their roots firmly in older titles. It's a grand blend of old and new that gets this odyssey off to a great beginning.
While the Cap Kingdom focused on introducing Mario's movement and mechanics, the Cascade Kingdom serves as a tutorial for Super Mario Odyssey's overall structure. In this majestic land, we are introduced to Power Moons, a Power Star like object which can be used as a source of energy for Mario and Cappy's new airship, the Odyssey. These moons can be found both by progressing the story of each kingdom, finding them in levels, completing some form of quest or puzzle, or within dedicated sub areas. More moons are unlock as the world's story progresses, and in that regard, the Cascade Kingdom wisely chooses to hold off of most of its challenges until you finish its story, letting things open up more once the player has a handle on things. To best sell this goal, the level design best resembles that of a Super Mario 64 level like Bob-omb Battlefield or Whomp's Fortress - a big, central point that you climb by going up and around the level. It keeps things relatively compact but leaves plenty of nooks and crannies to explore - a familiar level structure used to facilitate learning the new progression structure.
That combination of familiar and fresh extends to the captures introduced here. Chain Chomps dot the landscape, another reminder of Bob-omb Battlefield. Their ability to break structures in the reverse direction that they pull on is simple but gets put to great use in a dedicated bonus area and the boss fight with Madame Broode. The highlight, however, is absolutely the realistically rendered T-Rex, a hilarious contrast with the cartoon dinos of older Mario games. There's an inherent fun to seeing a large, imposing creature and taking on their power for a destructive rampage. The joy of seeing a new or familiar face and capturing them is a constant feeling that will continue to show itself in all the other kingdoms.
With the Odyssey powered up, we're heading to the Sand Kingdom next!

Badge of Index Fossils - all hand cut copper. A stylized brachiopod sits above hexagonaria, both common index fossils that allow us to understand geologic time and the constant shifting of continents and biomes. It's meditative, in a sense, to see the remnants of long-extinct creatures that were once some of the most common organisms on the planet. Life continues on; to a degree it is humbling and meditative to realize that our time on earth was prefaced by countless other forms of life and after us, there will be many, many more.
Realized I haven't been posting any of my school work here at all?? Time to catch up.

I HAVE SM TO SAY. firstly, this guy used to swim 24/7??? EXCUSE ME???? like just picture him with wet hair getting out of the pool I Am Not Okay. secondly, this interview with him feels so raw and intimate, like we’re really getting to know him and things hes passionate abt and it melts my heart how he starts rambling abt theatre and film :((
this man is my soulmate, im fucking convinced. HES INTO ART, POETRY (to be more specific, EGDAR ALLAN POE AND SEAMUS HEANEY LIKE???) AND MOUNTAINS??? (also why did i believe he was an only child😭) how much more husband can one get. we alr knew he’s a gift giver and great cook and now this??? im losing it
also, ive seen people compare him to cumberbatch and now knowing that he was one of his earliest inspirations after seeing hamlet, im so proud of him for being on par with one of the finest people in the industry. one of my fav parts of this interview has to be how excited cam gets when hes talking abt theatre and acting. it feels like hes in his element. u can feel just how much he loves this not because its his job, but because its an art form.
😭😭 he got his outfit tailored on ft?? i cant imagine how chaotic that must’ve been and the fact that he wore it around the house 😭😭
oh my god his music taste >>>> idk why but i always saw him as a classical, indie, 70s or 80s music kinda guy. he listens to johnny cash, bob dylan AND ELVIS?? oml yup this man is indeed the loml.
hes so into football istg 😭😭 get someone who loves u as much as cameron loves liverpool. HE EVEN HAS A SIGNED JERSEY ON DISPLAY IN HIS LIVING ROOM AS IF ITS A TROPHY LMFAO
i think this whole interview is just making me fall harder and harder for that man. i just connect sm with him, the way he wasn’t originally into art but after delving into it, he realized how much one can feel just by a painting and relate to it. he himself belongs in the an art museum. imagine him painting as an escape from reality & you’re his muse yea im gonna rip my hair out
it was such an amazing read and i found sm more reasons to love this man

beloved, my john
so i’ll carry on
counting my cards down to one
and when i am dead
come visit my bed
my fossil is bright in the sun
so can we contend, peacefully?
before my history ends
jesus, i need you, be near me, come shield me from fossils that fall on my head
there’s only a shadow of me, in a matter of speaking i am dead

Funguary day 4: cystolepiota! A fluffy little raptor-like that burrows in snow or sand with just their snouts sticking out, like a smaller, less toothy alligator with feathers. Based on the Cystolepiota (photo below)

today (it's still today in my timezone) marks a full year since i became unemployed which is pretty cool. as harrowing and obnoxious and a whole host of much nastier adjectives it's been (and continues to be) to try and get on disability, i think it's safe to say that i'm still much, much happier than i ever was while i was working. the future continues to be uncertain as always, but right now, i'm glad i can wake up in the mornings as The Unemployed Friend On A Tuesday.
there's a pretty persistent narrative out there of "even without being financially forced to do so, people still want to work", and i don't even really disagree with that idea, but for years and years and years i've never felt that way about myself at all. i feel like it's just something i was expected to "grow out of" and i guess it never happened. i can't imagine i'm the only one.
for all the people out there who can't work, who shouldn't be working, and who wouldn't work even in some hypothetical paradise, i hope you and i both get to live good and happy Unemployed Tuesdays in the years to come. and i hope every single united states politician explodes into blood at the same time

We should just throw Joe and Zongazonga into a fighting ring. No pretending to be someone else, no using others to do your bidding, just let the cowboy and sorcerer beat the shit out of each other while everyone watches.
