(Finally doing this)
On a streetcorner somewhere in the kingdom of Magnamiel, a crowd forms around a lone figure; a tall, gangly, oddly stiff-limbed cat covered entirely in a red and black jester's outfit, face hidden behind a white Comedy mask painted with a green starburst around one eye slit, a blue teardrop just below the other, and adorned with a bright red clown nose. The only part of their body visible is their tail, long and brown with thick, rough-cut but well-groomed fur. On the ground beside them are two items; a traveler's pack and a wooden sign painted with the same colors as their suit, declaring them to be "The Amazing Pierrot."
And as far as the crowd is concerned, "Amazing" is right. Before their eyes Pierrot puts on a show expertly crafted to dazzle and delight, combining charmingly simple circus tricks like juggling with displays of flexibility and acrobatics that defy both her unusual stiffness and the tenuous grasp physics has on even the most agile of felines.
But most enticing of all is the magic. Simple juggling balls replaced by spheres of flame, an ice skating routine that writes their name on the cobblestone street in midsummer, a bouquet of red and black roses pulled from thin air and presented with a sweeping bow to a blushing young lady in the front row. All this and more without uttering a single lyric or humming the simplest tune. To most of the townsfolk these tricks are just that, the illusions of a stage magician.
But others in the crowd, those truly familiar with the art of spellcasting, it's remarkable for exactly the opposite reason; against all logic, there is no trick. Pierrot truly is performing the impossible feat of using magic without music. A few of these cats, wizened and prideful toms that they are, scoff in denial and derision and take their leave, refusing to see what's happening before their very eyes. Others look on in awe, already dreaming of the possibilities for new understanding that this revelation has laid before them.
And one particular cat, a mage of no small renown herself, waits for the show to end before making her way out of the town and back to Magnamiel's capital with a story for His Majesty.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
King Bolero, Sovreign ruler of Magmnamiel, seventh of his name, strokes his beard thoughtfully, "How fascinating. And you're certain they weren't using an enchanted item of some sort?"
Archimage Peony, Bolero's Royal Magician and most trusted Advisor (and perhaps more behind closed doors, if the rumors are to be believed) nods, "Not during the performance, at least. Their pack had some minor protective charms, but nothing that could have been used as a Focus or enhancer. They were really, truly casting musicless magic."
"Hm..." He ponders for a few moments, steely gaze burning into a vacant corner of the room, before turning back to Peony, "You know, I rather think I'd like to meet this Pierrot character. Yes, I'll have a messenger sent to find them with an invitation to the castle at their earliest convenience. At least, if you believe that would be wise."
"I do sir. Honestly I'm curious about them as well. Both their amazing ability and..."
"Hm?" Bolero rises from his throne and kneels to get somewhere approaching eye level with Peony, "What troubles you, my dear?"
"They seemed...quite young, to my eyes. Closer to adult than kit, but still in that awkward stage where you haven't quite grown into your own fur. But despite that they appeared to be entirely alone. And the spells they used...they cast them with great skill and control, surely, and they did make for the most spectacular displays, but...many of them seemed more suited for combat than carnivals. I worry for what those details together imply."
He gently cups her face in one of his massive paws, and lifts it from where her gaze had drifted to the floor so their eyes meet, "Well then, all the more reason for that messenger to make haste!"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few days later, Ar-(Pierrot, the show's still on so you're) Pierrot arrives at the castle gates alongside the messenger who'd been sent to fetch her. The guards, recognizing the messenger, let them through without a fuss, though a couple of them do eye the still-costumed performer with confusion and caution. Understandable, really, given the mask and all. As she's led through the halls to the throne room, she takes in the castle's luxurious interior with awe. (and, deep beneath her layered facades, sizes the place up for her future plans and possible escape routes if something goes wrong)
After a minute or so, they arrive at the large double doors that present the threshold between herself and the king. Her companion steps forward and addresses one of the two guards stationed there, "G'day gentlemen. I've brought a guest who's been granted audience with the king."
He hands the guard the letter he'd first been tasked with bringing to her, and the guard briefly looks it and her over before nodding, "It all seems to be in order. His Majesty's not got other business for a good while, so go in whenever you're ready."
"My thanks, sir." he then turns to her, "Now, don't be too nervous, miss. His Majesty can appear rather imposing when you first see him, but he's one of the kindest souls you'll ever meet."
She nods, content to take his word for now, then with the briefest hesitation adjusts her pack and steps forward, with a brief pause of surprise when the doors act on some sort of enchantment and open on their own.
In the throne across the room sits an absolute giant of a cat, with a thick light-grey beard, shaggy greyish-brown fur, and a joyful gleam in his eyes. Beside him stands a much, much smaller cat with a tortoiseshell coat and crooked tail, one she'd almost mistake for a kitten if she didn't know by now how cats displayed age in this world.
The messenger continues with her for a few steps before stopping to announce her, "Presenting the Amazing Pierrot, traveling performer, to His Majesty King Bolero the Seventh and the Honorable Archimage Peony!"
When she reaches the center of the room, Pierrot dips down in a low, sweeping bow, "I'm hona'd to 'ave been invited 'ere Yer Majesty, M'Lady."
The two seem briefly thrown, either by the fact she'd spoken at all or by her accent (well, she'd needed some way to mask her voice, given how often that fake and her friends came to this universe), but recover so quickly that no one besides her likely noticed, "And we are honored to meet you in person as well, miss Pierrot. Er, is it miss, or..."
"Yessir."
A bit of relief shows in his face. He wouldn't want to offend his guest with an assumption, after all, "Now, I'm sure you're wondering just why I've invited you here."
She nods, "A bit, yes. Ain't sure just what I might'a did ta catch a king's eye."
"Well, Lady Peony here happened to catch one of your shows the other day, and I was absolutely intrigued when she told me about it."
"You certainly live up to your descriptor, miss Pierrot. The performance I saw was truly amazing."
Even with the mask, she's quite visibly embarrassed by the praise, "That's awf'ly kind of you ta say, M'Lady."
"It's only the truth. As a mage myself, I was particularly interested in your magical displays. I've never seen anyone cast magic without music before."
"Ahh, that's just a li'l somethin' me mum and I worked out between ourselves. Me voice ain't much fer carryin' a tune, y'see, but mum were a performer 'erself, an' a right good caster besides, an' I wanted ta grow up t' be like her so we...found a way." She shrugs, "weren't too hard after some trial an' error, really. Magic's more about the rhythm than the sound from what we gathered, an' even if I can't sing I'm a great dancer."
"That's...brilliant! A few scholars have suspected as much, but their theories have never gotten much attention. Miss Pierrot, would you be able to get me in contact with your mother? I would love to compare notes with the two of you."
"Um...I-she- y'see..." the young performer curls in on herself a bit, one paw clutched to her chest and her tail curving forward around one of her legs, "She ain't really...here, anymore."
"Oh, oh I'm so sorry, I didn't think..."
"I-it's alright, M'Lady, ya couldn't 'ave known."
At this point, King Bolero re-enters the conversation, "If you don't mind my asking, miss Pierrot, how long ago did your mother pass away."
"Uh, 'bout two years now, I think. It were a few weeks after I turned fourteen. I started travellin' just a bit after."
Well. It seems Peony's worries are confirmed. If she'd taken up her current nomadic lifestyle that young it was most likely that she didn't have anyone besides her late mother. Still, that solidifies an idea that Bolero had been mulling over while waiting for her to arrive.
"Miss Pierrot, how would you feel about staying here, in my castle?"
"I...what? I couldn't possibly-really!?"
"Well, of course! You seem like a delightful young lady, and I'd think you and Peony would have a great deal to discuss in terms of magic."
"That...that would be amaz- but, but I couldn't just give up performin'...''
"And you wouldn't have to. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but my court just so happens to lack a jester. Never found the right person for the job, you see. But, if your shows are even half as good as Peony described you'll be perfect for it." He sends her a mirthful, lopsided grin, "Besides, you've already got the outfit for it anyway."
"I...I'd be a right fool ta say no ta that!" she lets out a brief, somewhat hysterical giggle and looks up, "Plain ol' me, performin' for royalty. Oh, if mum could see me now..."
Ah, that's certainly enough to bring a tear to an old cat's eye. She'll be a wonderful addition to his court, he's sure, "Well, since that's settled, I'll have some of the servants prepare a room for you. And, ah, I do have one last request, if you wouldn't mind."
"What is it, yer Majesty?"
"Well, I was wondering if you'd be willing to show us what you look like behind your mask. Only if you're comfortable with it, of course."
...She doesn't say anything, but after a few moments of thinking it over she reaches up, using one paw to pull back her hood and the other to pull away her mask...revealing a brown-furred cat of indeterminate breed with Doppelganger Arle's red eyes and hairstyle, though with a simple cloth hair tie in place of her usual red-and-gold metal loop.
(Good thing I finally figured out that full-body transformation spell. If they'd found me last week I'd have had to play myself off as shy or something.)
(Some Notes: Bolero is a Norwegian Forest Cat, 'cause those guys are huge and really friendly with big beard-looking fluff and I thought it would be cool to have a gentle giant amongst the generally smol cat people. Meanwhile, Peony is based on Kitty, an actual cat my family had for years. She was tiny and had two kinks in her tail (one as a birth defect, the other from an injury as a kitten) and had absolutely no fear. No idea what breed she actually was.)

Ever since she was young, Otsuyu was raised in the lap of luxury. Anything she wanted - be it toys or sweets, was hers almost immediately. But after a while, she got bored and more bored of her life. She faced no struggle at all. Nothing stimulating happening and she was simply coasting through life.
When Kyubey approached her, she immediately wished to know true excitement. That night on her walk home, she found herself attracted to a dark pub. She immediately found herself dancing, conversing, and even singing karaoke. She found it truly exciting. And on her first witch hunt, she got a taste of the adrenaline of the hunt and she was hooked.
She spent the next months parting or witch hunting. Seeking even more excitement, she faked her age to enter the pub as a hostess. She would would spend even more time in the pub, listening to her client’s stories and serving up alcohol. She began to see life as a game, and began to indulge in dangerous activities such as defeating a witch with a cloudy soul gem, fighting other magical girls blindfolded, it didn’t matter. She adored the excitement.
She became a witch when she became too wrapped up in the excitement and her challenges became too dangerous. She became a witch who still seeks out excitement and pleasure.
WITCH DESCRIPTION
Tumblr media
CECIL
The witch of elegance. Her nature is debauchery. A hedonistic witch with a desire for excitement and pleasure. It does not matter what she indulges in, as long as it gives her an adrenaline rush. If she finds a magical girl, she will immediately fight them, seeking out the excitement of battle. Holding the ability to manipulate blood, she is able to utilize her wounds as extra limbs and weapons. Staying in her domain for too long can illcit feelings of drunkenness. She once possessed refined beauty, but discarded it long ago. Only those who exercise restraint can successfully defeat her.
Tumblr media
ENNUI
The minions of the witch of elegance. Their duty is to upkeep the party. Within their witches’ barrier exists an eternal party for the witch to enjoy. These minions fuel the party with the life force of their victims by using their lips to suck the soul out of anyone who gets too close. When they die, more appear in their place.
Doppel Description
“Entertain me!”
The doppel of debauchery. It takes the form of elegance. The master of this emotion is incredibly hedonistic, looking to maximize her pleasure. Likewise, the doppel happily bounces around the battlefield, looking for anything that can entertain it. This ranges from television screens to ongoing battles. Those caught in it’s way are sent into the spirit world, never to be seen again and the saliva it drools out can curse one into a state of permanent drunkenness. The doppel doesn’t remember almost anything about it’s victims, but is does remember their taste.

Please tell me more about Tsuruno and tsukasa
Ofc ofc!!! Ok so like. Guess I'll go section by section-
THE BEGINNING:
Tumblr media
In the beginning, it's sort of a magical girl rivalry - despite her power, Tsukasa is very impressed by Tsuruno! And vice reversa ofc - tsuruno has to wonder if the magic helps them play, or if it was just years of practixe - which, either way, it's super impressive and Tsuruno respects the practice! On opposing sides, there is a healthy rivalry and even tsukuyo notices her sister get in more scraps whenever they have to have to fight - otherwise they exchange witty remarks with each other and counterpoints to ideals about magius and magical girlness and doppels. On Tsuruno's side, as fun as it is to teach apprentices and have more experienced girls like yachio help her out, having a rival-rival is actually pretty fun! As much as their ideals are at opposite ends, they are having a good time despite the stakes at hand.
Honestly their rivalry is pretty friendly, and tsukuyo is happy to hear tsukasa ramble about how she'll best the powerful Yui Tsuruno next rather than her complaints of their father's nuttiness. Ofc tsukasa rarely wins tho.
Yachio and gang also get to hear plenty about tsukasa's strats from tsuruno, and some questions about the specific pieces she plays, if they are original and oooh maybe babanzai should have a music night that would be neat-
Phase 2: Tsuruno getting brainwashed by the wings of magius
One would have to assume, during this phase, Tsuruno spent plenty of time wandering about the main base of operations fendt hope. During this time, due to the influence of that brainwashing she's... having a tough time battling her guilt. And we all know what that does to soul gems and having yu hong situation would be bad to say the least. So as one that has to help monitor her... tsukasa helps!
Tumblr media
It's in this time that they have ample time to sort of learn about each other. Ofc, Tsukasa is getting help from her sister to dodge alina and the girls unknowingly, and mifuyu is also encouraging the relationship bond a bit because god. Tsuruno needs some help.
Knowing of the traumatic, shocking way tsuruno learned of soul gems and witches, Tsukasa really starts feeling for her. If there's one thing they both have, it's a lot on their shoulders, and tsukasa was slightly wrong in assuming tsuruno had anything easier than she did. So while tsuruno is getting pretty warped by the higher ups, and tsukasa is starting to regret her choice of side, tsukasa does her best to bring Tsuruno relief. And she's so stressed, it doesn't take much gentleness to lull her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Tsukuyo and mifuyu are a bit worried for both parties.)
Phase 3: Oh god She's Been Rumored
So yeah, the chelation land rumor comes to fruition, and in the coming days, Tsukasa did witness a scary moment of Tsuruno almost breaking out of her brainwashed state, because of her knowing that the magius are going to make her kill a lot of people. Tsukasa was practicing in her own little quiet spot, and Tsuruno finds her and asks her to keep playing while she talks. So she gets to know Tsuruno's true feelings on the matter (her music is helping hold tsuruno's last moments of a clear head), and the thing is Tsuruno is horrified that they're going to use her to kill potentially thousands of people. This can include family - it will include classmates, friends.... it's horrifying. Ofc as tsuruno starts to panic and plead for help, that tsukasa is one of her only safe people to be around she has to just please help her, tsukasa ends up faltering and tries to do something, to say she'd try- but the wings have found them. And tsuruno goes quiet as nemu talks her through where she's to go. Alina smiles tsukasa's way and cruelly thanks her for the show.
So once days pass, and chelation land gets finished, soon to open, and dammit, tsukasa wants to check in on tsuruno once again. She's been sulking about not being able to help calm tsuruno non stop (in fact tsukuyo has only heard worries of tsuruno from tsukasa in the past days apart so she is helping her get there), and so before iroha and squad get to tsuruno, maybe a day before, tsukasa checks in on her. tsurumor is. Unsettling in her calmness, but nonetheless elated to see tsukasa.
Tumblr media
And... it's hard for Tsukasa to ignore her influence on tsuruno still leaking through.
Tumblr media
And um. Yeah Tsukasa almost became the first victim as she's caught in Tsurumor's work, ending up being swept into a sweet, slow dance with her. Under chelation land effects, tsukasa's little uh crush sort of eluhhh gets spoken of, too relaxed and giddy to think about secret keeping anything, and tsurumor says a response that. Tsukasa isn't sure what she means. and she. kinda needed the help of a doppeled Tsukuyo to escape. Yeah. At this point she's now trying to think of the best way to maneuver her feathers so that iroha and gang can get in without getting too much energy sapped.
Despite the brainwash, the trauma and the rumor fusion, Tsuruno does eventually recall what went on in those weeks in her recovery. Tsukasa hasn't seen her (up close) and kind of avoids out of fear and shame for a bit, but frequently asks for updates from Mifuyu.
When they do eventually encounter each other again, tsukasa kinda. Runs. She has convinced herself tsuruno is mad at her. Tsuruno gives chase because "oh god did i do something while i wasnt myself HEY COME BACK I HAVE TO GIVE APOLOGIES". Silly little misunderstanding arc later and. They come to the understanding that they were just. Silly and worried and. Tsuruno asks the tough question of if what she said was true. About. Liking her like that. Tsukasa. Feels like her heart is swallowing itself and she is. Imploding. Meanwhile in reality she is frozen for a bit, getting redder and redder and tsuruno is worried. And all tsukasa can do is just go. "S.Sure is~ I'm sosoryybye" and off she runs.
Granted it does take time for them to come to a stable spot where they can talk their feelings out, especially as the amane twins pull away from the plots of the wings of magius, but they do end up together!
And as nervous as they both were, Tsuruno's dad is hella accepting and hella in the know and cool about it. He's just happy his daughter is safe and having a good time! And from what the girls have talked about over their meals in babanzai, if the man is given the opening he will absolutely verbally tear tsukasa's dad a new one for using his daughter like a work horse! At least he's a work horse alongside his daughter and doesn't berate her!
Anyhow- thank you for coming to my essay :)
Tl:dr tsukasa is the first to develop feelings and it's a shaky road of rivals to friends to dating but it does happen and its kinda sweet!
Ofc i could talk more about the fleshings out but i tried to make this a short essay and not a whole 1000k word fic or something but i have thought extensively abr rhe phases i just need to brush up on magireco since i haven't thought on it in a while!
Ty for asking, Homura! Enjoy!

*gives each of the Doppels a beaded necklace with a polished stone as the main center*
Ludlow: Green Rhodonite helps with anxiety and stress. The color also matches your own royal olive green uniform! It’s also a protection stone.
Gwen: Labradorite helps with letting go of negative feelings and emotions you could be holding deep inside. Not that you have a problem with keeping things bottled up…right?
Babyface: Citrine helps to bring success and prosperity and is also a protective stone. You’ve got a little found family to take care of now.
Alexei: Rose Quartz is a healing stone connected to the heart and throat chakra. It will help protect the love you have for your friends and Natasha and also help you to be understood and heard when you speak.
This is l-lovely, thank you!
What are you gettin' at here?? Me, feelings? Ha! Keep your crummy necklace, I don't need something as tacky as that! Me?? Bottle things up??? *scoffs*
I'll take hers if she don' want it. This kind of stuff? Good karma, i'll take whatever luck I can in this business. And hey, you ever need a job done? Call me, we can consider it payment.

Alexei says thank you! He l-loves the sentiment a lot.

Magia record anime review
Spoilers for Magia record and tw for despair, violence and solitude
(Preface- Magia record is the story of part of what happens in one of the timelines of Madoka Magica. It is a spinoff, so I will operate under the assumption that readers are already familiar with Madoka Magica. If you aren't, I have a separate post covering it.)
Tumblr media
(As I was writing this, I realised there were two potential ways to approach the judgement section. One of them involved linking back to Madoka Magica, while the other involved looking at this anime as a separate entity. I think that, because the two are so close knitted and set in the same universe, it makes sense to take the first approach.)
“It’s ok to accept my weakness, right? Start small, and move a little bit forward at a time.”- Iroha Tamaki
Genre: action, magical girl, dramatic, psychological
Where I watched it: Funimation
Characterisation:7/10 (Magia record offers characters with diverse and well developed personalities, all of which create distinct portraits of what humanity means. What makes this even better is that none of the girls are perfect- they struggle with insecurity and loneliness, but they put up facades of cheeriness, independence, or aloofness to cover that up. This made the characters a bit more complex and added a few interesting twists. Backstories are generally creative and quite well developed. However, to me, most characters seemed very similar to the cast from pmmm, which I found disappointing, because the idea of an imperfect magical girl, and the themes of hope and despair surrounding that, had so much potential for expansion, so I wanted to see a set of completely new characters, not shadows of the original girls)
Setting: 8.5/10 (The idea of Iroha needing to move to Kamihama because she suspects there might be a link to the rumors and her lost sister is a good one, as it creates a sense of adventure. The city caters perfectly to the plot, with each rumor being situated in a location that represents it perfectly. Another element of the setting I really enjoyed was the villa all the girls shared- with them living all together, it showed they relied on each other and were now something akin to a family, as well as adding opportunities for more wholesome and light hearted scenes with the cast. It’s appropriate that the villa belonged to Yachiyo previously, as she was left to live there alone after the death of her previous roommates and friends. This means that Yachio letting other girls into the villa again shows that she’s opened herself up once again to the idea of making friends. On a completely separate note, the memory museum and the amusement park embryo eve is meant to be released in are both built with complexity and creativity.)
Plot: 7.5/10 (the plot is generally dynamic and stimulating, with a lot of mysteries that need solving and increasing amounts of questions raised by Iroha’s investigations of Kamihama, rumors, Magius, the group fighting for the freedom of all magical girls. Sometimes however, it gets overly complex, so it can be hard to follow, or certain aspects start to drag a little bit. Girls from the original pmmm anime were featured in a few episodes in an effort to link the two together even more, despite them having little relevance or significance to the main story.)
Art style: 8.5/10 (The theme of visual storytelling continues to be strong in the spinoff series, with several hints relevant to the plot in the settings, and the rumors, which are very similar to witches, being made up of visual bits and pieces of girls’ past lives. The doppels, a temporary witch version of magical girls which can be used in combat or to purify a dangerously tainted soul gem, are also constructed in a similarly personal and unique way. The actual drawings are pretty and aesthetic, which goes hand in hand with the dual nature of what it means to be a magical girl. Colour pallets can also be seen changing to reflect the mood of scenes, or highlight significance.)
Originality: 7/10 (Even though a few new elements, such as doppels and rumors (which are essentially witches) were introduced, the majority of the main ideas remain the same. An interesting element introduced is the additional emphasis on infighting between the magical girls, with Magius fighting for their liberation in ways deemed dangerous and unethical. This sets them up as the main enemies for most of the series, instead of witches.)
Consistency: 6.5/10 (Throughout the first 2 seasons, the anime has a solid plotline and is, for the most part, interesting to watch. Season 3, which was made up of solely 5 episodes, felt rushed, so a lot was crammed into a relatively short period of time, especially when compared to the build up. This makes it easy to get slightly lost. The resolution also felt unsatisfactory.)
Addictiveness: 7.5/10 (the series is generally dynamic, fairly engaging and full of mystery. This made it a reasonably addictive anime, as there were several questions that needed answering, with changes in characters and setting helping to keep things interesting. Sometimes, there are so many things going on at once that it becomes easy to lose interest.)
Comfort: 5.5/10 (Following in Madoka Magica’s footsteps, this series is definitely not a lighthearted one, exploring the idea of misguided and naïve girls meeting their death at the hands of witches for a flawed wish, after being tricked by Kyubey. The older magical girls, who have witnessed all this suffering firsthand, bottle up their true emotions and put up a confident façade (Yui), or push others away for fear of hurting them (Yachiyo). However, very few of the main characters die when compared to pmmm, and the true friendship between Yachio’s team can make for wholesome moments and fragments of comfort in intense scenes, especially when compared to the rocky dynamic the girls had in pmmm.)
Philosophy: 8/10 (Just like pmmm, magia record brings forth some interesting dilemmas on morality, and whether drastic action, after an eternity of suffering, is acceptable. The idea of weakness, and more “vulnerable,” magical girls needing Magius to protect them from becoming witches, is also crucial, as it shows how our solitude and insecurities can be used to manipulate us, and how those struggling tend to be forgotten by the stronger or those with their own concerns, leaving them to seek help elsewhere. Magia Record also shone light on the touching friendship between the main characters, who had all experienced the most vicious forms of despair in their own way, and suggested that, with a little help, everyone can move on and continue to fight, especially when you have someone who genuinely cares about you by your side.)
The plot
Iroha Tamaki is a magical girl who fights witches in Mitakihara city, but she can’t remember what her wish was when she made her contract. When talking to her friend about the subject, the girl says that if a magical girl goes to Kamihama city, she can be saved from her fate, and one afternoon, Iroha finds herself on a train to said city. Unfortunately, the Kamihama witches are a lot more powerful than the regular ones, so Iroha has to be rescued by veteran magical girl Yachiyo, who makes her promise to never return. However, when a mysterious small Kyubey appears and seemingly guides Iroha to Kamihama, and as she becomes convinced that the city is somehow linked to the disappearance of her younger sister, Ui, Iroha employs the help of a trio of friendly magical girls, who rescued her from a witch, to help find her sister, with no luck. However, increasingly suspicious rumors are beginning to appear, witch like creatures created by seemingly harmless stories, so, after a while, Iroha joins up with Yachiyo and another enthusiastic girl named Yui to investigate these rumors. As the three continue to track down rumors and encounter new teammates, they also meet Magius, an association which claims to want to save all magical girls from their inevitable demise. After being invited to the memory museum, the girls learn about the horrible truth behind magical girls, and Magius’ risky plan to secure their future. Iroha is also shocked to discover that the leaders of Magius are non other than Nemu and Touka, two genius girls her sister befriended when they were all in the hospital. This sparks the beginning of a battle with Magius, which will determine the future of all magical girls, and it may take great sacrifice and pain to stop Magius and save all the girls, but Iroha is certain she can get through to Touka and Nemu.

Rockman Characters as Magireco Units Part 3: Kodama Drift
I jokingly mentioned in last year's Magitober that, since I'd done Magireco builds for the main Fusion trio from Exe, that I would also do one for Starforce's Subaru eventually. Well, a buddy and I were chatting away on Discord a few days ago, and I got inspired to do that now. So I present to you, Exe Rockman characters as Magireco Units Part 3: Starforce Edition!
Staring with the main protagonist again, Subaru. Now, unlike with the Fusion trio, the Starforce characters kinda don't work together often in-series until game three, which I'm handily ignoring on account of... not having actually finished it yet. Whoops. I'm only covering Ryuusei (Subaru) and Harp Note (Misora, AKA the First Hibiki) here, though I might do something with Rogue eventually, because he's fun. (Also anime version Cancer Bubble just screams 'Magirepo unit'.)
Onto stats! First up, Subaru:
Ryuusei no Rockman Element: Light Type: Balance Growth Pattern: Attack/HP Disks: AABBC, one vertical blast and one horizontal
Compared to our previous Rockman, the Hikari twins, Ryuusei's got a bit more armor, and a lot more HP. He's got more of a focus on blocking attacks versus evading them. I've loosely based some of his build here on Yachiyo's, partially since Yachiyo's the default 'does it all' veteran (tanky, high damage, good HP pool, and inherited protection to top it off,) and partially because Yachiyo gives me similar vibes to Subaru's character. For some reason. Depressed and cynical grump who learns to be friendly again through the power of found family, I guess.
Connect: If There's Even a Sliver of a Chance... Attack Up, Blast Up, Damage Cut. A reference to this line Subaru says in game 1.
Magia: Star Fall Damage All Enemies, Attack Up (Allies/2t), Light Attack Up (Allies/2t), Remove Status Ailments (Allies)
So I couldn't think of an actual attack to reference here, so I made one up. I imagine the animation looking similar to Momoko's magia 'Edge of Universe,' and maybe utilizing one of the sword cards. Alternatively, maybe it could look similar to Tanabachi's Doppel?
(Also a very obtuse pun on the 'Heaven's Fall' catastrophe in Aldnoah.Zero because I keep rewatching it I regret nothing)
Second Magia: Star Break
Now, there's actually three Star Force forms (which are activated by the Star Break move in the anime, for those uninitiated,) so I could just pick one like the games did, or... we could use all three. So! Like Theresia, Sana's Doppel, has 2 forms, this one's gonna have one for each Star Force form. Fun!
1st pattern: Atomic Blazer (Fire Leo) Damage All Enemies, Attack Up (Allies/3t), Defense Up (Allies/3t), Chance to Burn (Enemies/2t) 2nd pattern: Magician's Freeze (Ice Pegasus) Damage All Enemies, Attack Up (Allies/3t), Damage Cut (Allies/3t), Chance to Skill Seal (Enemies/2t) 3rd pattern: Elemental Cyclone (Green Dragon) Damage All Enemies, Damage Inflicted Up (Allies/3t), Variable (Self/1t)
I nerfed the last one to allow for Variable. Now, this doesn't really track to the actual in-series attack, but 'elemental' immediately made me think 'variable!' so here we are. Also possibly an homage to Aniyachi.
Once again, I'll deal with SE later. Onto Misora! That's right, I'm doing both of them.
Harp Note Element: Flame Type: Attack Growth Pattern: Attack/Defense Disks: ABBCC, both blasts are vertical
Not quite an honorary Chargius, I've mostly just riffed off of Aimi here. Misora's an attack type here, because she takes No Shit™.
Connect: Raise Your Voice! Damage Up, Chance to Stun, Endure
In the first game, Misora gives the link skill 'Undershirt,' which is effectively Endure. I figure this would track to anybody else she formed a Brotherband with, and what are connects but temporary Brotherbands? (Except I've already made that joke about Soul Unison, crap.) In addition, her 'Pulse Song' attack in-game stuns.
Magia: Shock note Damage Enemies in a Horizontal Line, Damage Up (Allies/2t), Chance to Stun (Enemies/1t), Defense Down (Enemies/2t)
Second Magia: Machine Gun String Damage Enemies in a Horizontal Line, Damage Up (Allies/3t), Chance to Stun (Enemies/1t), Defense Down (Enemies/2t)
I've got some ideas for card art and personal memos and whatnot, but it's late and I'm tired. It'll be tackled later.

Characters who could have joined Neo-Magius
Not that long ago, people in the translation discord were talking about who else (besides the obvious and canon ones) of all the cast could have joined Neo-Magius? This stuck on my mind for a while, and I compiled a list! And I get why these are pretty unrealistic! This is just a fun thing! About who would join an actual supremacy cult! Wait is that fun
First of all, one interpretation I really like of Neo-Magius‘ (NM) whole thing is “solving human issues with supremacy”
Amane Twins: The twins were the main answer in the translation discord, and I get why, because there’s a subplot involving them that I’m pretty weirded out that it hasn’t been that talked about? Well, basically the twins’ parents and grandmother found out that they know each other. You can guess that didn’t go well at all, in fact, Tsukuyo and Tsukasa aren’t showing up lately because of that. While Tsukasa’s dad is okay with his daughters knowing each other, the grandmother put Tsukuyo under house arrest, so the two haven’t been able to see each other (the way they were found out was through Tsukuyo’s mom following her one time out of concern due to the raising conflicts between the west and east, and it seems she was in contact with the twins‘ father while doing so). I can see the two of them joining Neo-Magius to stop them from being separated over reasons that aren’t their fault (like the whole east vs west divide, their parents’ marriage failing due to being too different, the grandmother’s expectations, etc) along the lines of ‘If we are on the top, no one can separate us’. Also this is unrelated, but poor Tsukasa seems to be reaching her limit, she tells Kanagi that she understands why Kanagi wanted to destroy Kamihama in the past.
Ren: This one might be pretty surprising but I can see Ren joining NM on similar grounds to Shizuka; mainly to guide people towards goodness. One of the major themes with Ren is dealing with the ugliness in the world. Having to face the fact that even if she got rid of all Witches, evilness would still exist, is what drives her to suicide a second time (I’m pretty sure the Magia Archives mentions that Ren meeting Rika offset her from following a bad path). There‘s also her doppel’s power which erases evil from a person’s heart but ends up erasing their personality as well (the line about Ren being low-key into it is horrifying). So I can see Ren joining parallel to Shizuka.
Yuuna: So this one is very simple: had none of her character development happened, Yuuna would have definitely jumped on the supermacy bandwagon. The main reason why is to live up to the glorified image she had of Mami as a saint, something like ‘If I want to become like my noble saint, I must stand at the top’.
Sayaka: Ok, so before anybody scoffs at this, I’m just going to go right in: Sayaka’s whole dilemma about being thanked and appreciated is a one-way ticket towards being driven into NM. The Surfing Sayaka event involves the theme of telling someone about what you wished for in their sake, is it good or bad? (It has a lot of significant moments between Sayaka and Kyoko on the topic, with Kyoko being understandably on the ‘its bad’-side). If Sayaka was still balls hard into the concept of a hero of justice without resolving any of her grivances on expecting something back for her wish, I’m sure the potential for Sayaka joining NM is there.
Mikoto, Hanna, and Alina: Honestly? All three fall into the same category: they want to do shit their own way without giving a fuck about those around them. Mikoto‘s struggles with her parents are what made her go ‘You know what? Screw this!’ And use her own suggestion magic to let her imagine a more proper and well-adjusted family in her head, so wanting to rise above her parents and live in her imagination (like Himena) is what I see for Mikoto. Hanna would probably want to rise to a higher sandbox where she can start chaos as she wants, but then again she’s pretty unpredictable with what she wants. Alina I imagine would be into being above everyone just so that she can make whatever art she wants, free from anyone’s opinions (although to be fair she would make some messed-up shit). Also Alina is already somewhat of a supremacist, but again, she’s the type who’s pretty self-motivated.
Chika: So the basis here is pretty straightforward: Chika is a misanthropist, understandably so because of the problems she and her family experienced. She also seems to be struggling with preferring nature to humans while being a human herself (hell, her doppel line is “In the end, I’m just human too…”). But all this is ironic since Chika infiltrates NM alongside Sunao by pretending to join in Chapter 5.
Sakurako: Weirdly enough I can see Robot Daughter as a supremacist. My line of thinking here comes from the idea of her robotic manner of approaching things, so ideas like Magical Girl supremacy would seem to be really logical to Sakurako. Nemu would be pissed though, “ITS NOT A PHASE MOM!”
Rui: I know, the chuuni girl and joining a supremacy cult? Seems like an obvious one until you remember how nice Rui is. I can see it happening from another angle: her not wanting to be potentially judged for her chuuni persona, which in turn becomes a type of supremacy. Oh and she‘s friends with Miyuri too, their friendship is nice.
And thats it! From me at least. I made an effort to consider all the possible angles that stood out to me and seemed possible in character (So nothing like Rika or say Hinano joining because Issues TM since it would be weirdly out of character and without an existing basis like Ren). I did come up with Tart as a ‘ignore the time discrepancies’ option, but she’s way too selfless and self-sacrficing to resolve to put herself above anyone. Do share any girls or angles that I missed.

Magia Record, Season 3, Episode 2, "All the Girls Disappearing," First Impressions!
Y’know, if I was right about this having originally supposed to be the final fourth of season 2 but got made into its own thing because of production problems, then I’d say it was the right call.
It’s late, and this episode was more of an emotional experience rather than major plot developments, so I’ll cut right to the chase and make things quick.
I’ve mentioned time and again how large the shadow of the original series looms over this show. Madoka Magica was lightning in a bottle, a true game changer that cannot be matched, cannot be replicated, and there is no chance of this spin-off side story to reach those same heights and make that same impact. All it can hope to do is be the best possible version of itself.
And it’s certainly put in the effort. There’s a lot I love about this show, mainly the constant surreal visuals and charming characters, but it’s always hovered more around being Pretty Good rather than outright Great, though at times it has hit that mark.
This episode, I feel, hits that mark.
If the last episode was the spiritual equivalent to episode 10 of the original series, than this was the equivalent to episode 9, in which we bid goodbye to two beloved characters as they’re consumed by the nightmare of the Magical Girl system. Granted, it’s not quite the same. Momoko and Mifuyu are great, make no mistake, but they’re no Kyoko and Sayaka, did not have anywhere near the same level of narrative connection, and their loss here was more of a bittersweet sacrifice than an outright tragedy. Still, it did get me a little choked up, as did when they brought Kaede back. That whole sequence where they’re going from Magical Girl to Magical Girl, restoring each of them, was very moving. Goodbye, you two. I’m sorry you couldn’t bring your family back together in the end.
I really like that they took the time to show that even the faceless Black Wings were also being cured. It always bugs me when stories treat the named characters like they’re the only ones that matter while just killing off loads of background characters for shock value or whatever, but here it’s making it clear that everyone’s life matters, even the foot soldiers indoctrinated into the WoM. After all, since the WoM was founded to save them, it wouldn’t do to just let them die.
Oh God, what’s Yachiyo going to do when she finds out?
Meanwhile, now that Touka and Iroha’s memories have been restored, things unfortunately get worse. Now that she remembers Ui, Touka regains some measure of her sanity, enough to have some measure of regret over trying to kill Iroha, though naturally she wants to know why Nemu never told her about Ui.
And it’s quite simple: Nemu was worried that if Touka knew everything, she might abandon the plan, the plan that they had invested so much into. Granted, it had changed with the loss of Ui, but their end-goal remained fixed: find a way to save all Magical Girls.
You know, I honestly feel kind of sorry of these two, despite all they’ve done. They were just kids, trying to change what they saw as an injustice in the world. But Touka was driven nuts by the weight of all the pain she had to take into herself while Nemu was left with nothing else, nothing more to live for other than the plan.
We also learn where those messages to come to Kamihami City came from. It was Embryo Eve itself, Ui’s witch sending those messages. And it’s still around.
Touka might have regained her memories, and she was certainly pissed about having the truth kept from her, but in the end she agrees with Nemu. The plan must succeed. Which…involves Embryo Eve eating Walpurgisnacht for some reason, and that’ll enact some kind of perfect Doppel system? I think?
Look, the magic system in this show has always been kind of bullshit, so just roll with it.
Anyway, I was wondering how they were going to finish the show, since the main conflicts seems to have wrapped up. But no, Touka and Nemu are on EE, trying to chase down Walpurgisnacht, and that promises to be a titanic encounter.
It’s all going to end on a reset, isn’t it? God, please don’t end with a reset! I know it’s the only ending that makes sense, but please don’t end that way!

Closing thoughts on Magia Record s3
(spoilers)
I’m looking at the tag and there’s a lot of complaints, but I liked it fine. Though I’ve never cared for the story in the game so that probably explains a lot.
The scene with Momoko and Mitama un-doppeling the other magical girls was beautiful, but didn’t feel earned to me. I mean it is very similar to what Madoka does at the end of the main anime, but that was the main character who got god level powers from being at the centre of colliding universes that was built up through the whole season, but here it’s some side characters who unexpectedly have a plot convenient power. Sure the scale is entirely different when here it’s just the magical girls in this town while Madoka saves everyone who ever existed, but the scenes still play out the same way. And Momoko is like girl #12, why is she suddenly important enough for a big event like this? Not that I have anything particularly against Momoko, she’s a perfectly fine girl, but she didn’t really stand out of the supporting cast to me nor did I feel that her presence in the story (or what little I could remember of it) would lead to something like this.
Poor Kuroe, I really liked her. I think her death scene was well done and a plausible end to a character like her, but also I don’t think it fit too well in the story. Like, Iroha already loses people a lot closer to her so also losing someone she didn’t know that well didn’t add much, and I felt that making Iroha angst about not understanding Kuroe enough didn’t really go anywhere.
Finally: the first episode was really good and I liked most of the stuff around Iroha and her 3 little sisters. Meanwhile the Mikazuki villa team stuff didn’t work with me; To me they hadn’t had enough presence as a found family to justify the “we still have each other” as the message for the finale. Alina made for a pretty boring endboss though a lot of really good animation came out of it. And the ending didn’t really satisfy my “how will they deal with the fact that Homura will just reset everything until Madoka solves the witch issue” question.

Things I want in season 3
More Kuroe backstory and development
Give us Karin, we deserve it after they baited us all season
FIX TOUKA AND NEMUS REDEMPTION. I cannot stress this enough. Fix it, and make it so the story doesn’t end with them.
This is more of a personal indulgence but I want kyosaya content
No more iro/////yachi bait. That’s just nasty.
Give us some yachimifu reconciliation. They’re making steps in the anime but I don’t think they’re okay just yet.
IS KAERENA OKAY?
Also how are things going to be resolved with the doppel syndrome? It won’t have the same end as the game with Kamihama as just doppel city since doppels kinda suck in the anime so what’s the ending going to be?
Now that the found family is together again I want their interactions. The Yachiyo seeing Felicia and Sana again moment was excellent, and I want more of it.
Also since there’s no Walpurgis Nacht in Kamihama I’m wondering how the finale is gonna go? Are they gonna follow the Holy Quintet to Mitakihara? Please let the Holy Quintet be okay!

Name: Sylvana Lorenzo
Age: 14
Wish: “We wish to stay together, with nothing to impede our friendship.”
Power: Duplication
Weapon: Horagai
Likes: Milana, Terrariums
Dislikes: The Elderly
Element: Light
Magia: Call of The Leviathan
Teammate(s): Milana
Witch/Doppel: Hungrige
A loud and outspoken girl who who spends most of her time with her best friend. She resents most of the people in her town for trying to separate her from her “other half”. Unlike her friend, she is more open to other people, albeit still distant.
BACKSTORY
Sylvana grew up in a particularly affluent family, with most of her time being spent down at the docks, collecting shells, flowers, coral pieces, and anything shiny. She was isolated from her peers due to coming out too strong and accidentally making them uncomfortable.
One day however, she met Milana, a girl from a more poor family. The two hit it off immediately, bonding over their shared interest in running away and seeing the world. The two friends, when they could meet up would talk for hours about their day and dreams.
However, when Sylvana tried to introduce Milana to her family, they shut it down immediately, and forbid her from meeting her ever. They were particularly classist and saw that because Milana was poor, she was not worth any time.
It didn’t go well with Milana’s family either, and the two had to sneak out to meet each other. One day, her parents decided it would be best for Sylvana to move to an in land city, away from the boonies. This would mean separating from her best friend and the two had one last meeting.
That is when Kyubey approached them. They both wished to stay together, with nothing to impede on their relationship.
They were finally allowed to meet whenever they desired and both made a great tag team in fighting, allowing them to defeat witches and territorial magical girls relatively easy. But Milana was particularly selfless, and always insisted on using the majority of their grief seeds on Sylvana as she used up the most magic to attack.
Milana became a witch and Sylvana was forced to kill her best friend. Her family resumed to have her move away and she only survived a month more, being too depressed to hunt witches. She became a witch, clutching her best friend’s grief seed in her hand.
WITCH DESCRIPTION
Tumblr media
HUNGRIGE PUMPE
The witches of ancient seas. They have a gregarious nature. Two witches, both connected at the hip make up one powerful witch. Both dread being apart and cannot stand the idea of being alone. One witch can pump the other full of water to expand the other and the second witch can split themselves into countless copies of themselves. The tendrils that trail off the witch can inject a soul gem filled with curses, so it’s best to simply avoid this witch unless you have a ranged weapon. Only through camaraderie can one defeat these witches.
Doppel Description
“Sylvana, why did you do it?”
The doppel of protection. It takes the form of deep seas. The master of this emotion simply wishes to stay with her best friend forevermore, and as such this doppel can only emerge if it’s sister doppel emerges as well. The doppel is similar to an eel or sea snake, able to freely dislocate her jaw to devour anything that might hurt her more fragile friend. Within her gut, boiling acid is found and she can freely spit it up and the acid itself is powerful enough to dissolve skyscrapers in seconds. Both doppels, when united become an undefeated force of nature, lashing at their target with poisonous tentacles and a gullet filled with acid.
